Too whiny.

I find myself going through periods of loving Morrisey, and loathing in equal measure. Generally means that depending on which day I'd give this a 2 or a 4 star review. Today is a 4 star day.

God Morrissey sucks. STOP making me listen to his albums, they’re not good!

First thoughts: how many fucking times is this guy on this fucking list?? Throughout the album, there were moments I enjoyed, but they were far outweighed by the world that we're forced to inhabit. Even though it's a relatively short album, I found it to be a slog.

Ack! Morrissey again?! Just when you thought he couldn't possibly have another album on the list, there he is again, the King of the 3 star rating, staring straight at you from under his carefully groomed eyebrows.

Totally skippable Morrissey, it's fine but oh boy it's not for me.

I am not very familiar with Morrissey's catalog of songs and definitely not this album. I have not been inspired me to seek out more.

Maybe it was the dehydration headache I woke up with or the noise from the roofers that started too early at my house this morning but there were several moments today when I thought, "I think Morrissey's voice is making me nauseous." Other than that, I didn't find this album to be particularly remarkable.

I was not excited to have a Morrissey album to listen to. While I haven’t a lot of experience with his music, I have found him a bit downbeat and dreary in the past. So I had a little apprehension about the next 40 minutes. I needn't have worried... I found this album really enjoyable! Catchy, upbeat tunes that grew on me even more on subsequent listens. What a lovely surprise!

Felt like this wasn’t as good as Viva Hate or the smiths albums. Pretty similar where it’s morissey singing and there isn’t much else to it. Feel like most of his songs are pretty somber and not really worth revisiting. 5.2/10

I like The Smiths and Morrissey in general. There's nothing that really stood out for me, but I still get a kick out of the depressing lyrics and turns of phrase. That chainsaw break is also pretty sweet!

Morrissey is still a tool, but this somehow manages to be not quite as bad at The Smiths.

Cut to the chase, there was no high hopes for this album to be anything but regretful given how disdainful the feelings are toward The Smiths, and their punk adjacent aimlessness that just serves as a reason to be frustrated at nothing. Morrissey, like any solo artist that transformed their identity into a single moniker, is a pretentious and narcissistic foray into what honestly is a staple in the world of entertainment. Within this context, any dislike of the man is easily understood. Thing is, "Vauxhall and I" plays rather nicely in the background. If it was not Morrissey, maybe the disdain would be non-existent but there is just a certain sense of unforgivable that hangs ominously over his contribution to whatever music is supposed to be. However, for the sake of objectivity and the constant reminder that this list is predicated on the opinion that he should be heard before leaving this plane, there is a stunning lack of regret in this play-through. While this review stays unconvinced, this album is what it is and perhaps the disdain allows for more meaningful appreciation elsewhere.

An excellent Morrissey album that I imagine will improve with each listen. 4 🌟

This album started good; surprisingly excellent, honestly. I thought I might end up begrudgingly loving it. But, true to form, Morrissey's head slowly became stuck further and further up his own ass as the songs went on.

Ultimately a good record, if a hair forgettable

It's funny how polarising Morrissey is when looking at the reviews. It's been almost 8 months since I listened to You Are The Quarry and I'm not sure where this fits into the zeitgeist. Anyway, it feels a bit middle of the road, has a few highlights and is a bit slow at times. But I also feel it's worth a little more explorations so keeping it a 4. Fave: Now My Heart Is Full

I’m sure it’s a seminal album to those who grew up idolising Morrissey and hoping for a return of The Smiths sound, but it sounds like whinging to my ears these days. It’s also not at all helped by age.

I’ve just never been able to get into Morrissey’s smarmy voice and slow burn songs.

It's good, it's a more polished pop version of the Smiths. It's perhaps his best album. 3.5 for me but I round up.

Not a fan, singing too somber, every song sounds the same

On one hand, this is a Morrissey album with songs that just sound like most Morrissey albums. On the other, I really like Morrissey albums.

He's such a weird person in music. I didn't dislike this as much as I wanted to. There's no How Soon is Now or There is a Light, but it's completely listenable.

Had to check but apparently rated Your Arsenal with 3 stars and wondered why that Morrissey album was on the list. I knew Vauxhall and I is a better album but had not listened to it for at least a decade or so and forgot how much better it is. It contains exactly quite a number of 5-star classic Morrissey songs and I liked it a lot (4 stars, but at the high end so 8/10).

Great album

Morrissey is a piece of shit and a sad excuse for a human being. But damn is he an amazing songwriter. If you are able to separate the art from the artist with Morrissey his catalogue is a fantastic lesson in music history especially in The Smiths era. And if you don't know how The Smiths wrote music it's worth learning because it is a strange situation that became wonderful art. All that being said this is an amazing album. It opens strong and then "Spring-Heeled Jim" is a weird track and "Billy Budd" falls flat. "Hold on to Your Friends" has a beautiful guitar part. "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" reminds you that Morrissey is a creep while backed by a great song. The next two tracks just feel like classic Morrissey but nothing too special to me. "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning" is strange vocally but solid musically. The next two have that classic Morrissey sound again and "The Lazy Sunbathers" is my second favorite song on the album. "Speedway" I think is the most progressive song on the album, it somehow balances the Morrissey sound with a much more progressive musical sound that is an energetic masterful way to end an album. Morrissey is a 0/5 person this album is a 4.5/5. If Morrissey wasn't a shitty person and was more of a musician I'd be inclined to give it a 5, but I'll stick to a 4.

Well...I don't like his politics but fuck, if this album doesn't deserve to be on here I don't know what does. Despite being an unrepentant narcissist and all-around absurd person, Morrissey is an incredible musician. Not only do I get the appeal, it's kind of my thing. It's the mopey teenager in me. Why are so many famous people such weirdos? Probably because you have to be bizarre to actually want all of the trappings of fame. There's really not a skip on here for me. That said, still prefer his work with the Smiths. Fave track: Now my Heart is Full or Moon River. Got a good laugh out of him saying "I wrote that" at the end of the latter too. Haha

Bits of this are good, but it’s also an excellent reminder of the extent to which Marr’s guitar makes The Smiths.

A lot of decent songwriting on here, and of course Morrissey is able to sell them all to some extent, but generally the instrumentation and production is too bland and uniform for me to be too invested. Also, you are not "hated for loving", you are hated for hating. Favorite Tracks: "Now My Heart Is Full", "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get"

God, I hate Morrissey. I hate his singing style, I hate his lyrics, I hate his personality. He doesn't make the worst music on this list, but he is one of the more unlikeable people making mediocre music on this list. I gave this album a listen and it's just so blah.

Haven't really listened to much solo Morrissey. There's still a fair amount of stuff I like carried over from the Smiths. Not a fan of the slowed down stuff, though, and the breathy "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning" was especially horrible. I could almost go to 4 stars for this, but minus one star for Morrissey being such an absolute prat. 😡 Fave track - "Spring-Heeled Jim" - kinda ambient Smiths!

I'm a Smiths / Morrissey fan but this album. So ehow escaped my orbit. There are some absolutely gorgeous so gs on this album. As usual his band is spot on...they sound amazing the rockers like Billy Budd; ROCK! The more subtle songs like the beautiful I am Hated For Loving and Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning are arranged with beautiful tasteful touches. The album is lovely from beginning g to end. Highly recommended. 4 🌟

I would lie if I'd say that this music does not touch me.

Dude's a d-bag to the nth degree, but hell if he can't make pretty music with a great voice.

I probably need a few more spins to process and make sure I truly love the album, and it isn't just Moz trying to seduce me with those baby blues on the album cover. So far, Morrissey's solo work lives solidly right there in the 4 area for me. Which, hey, is nothing to crow about. I can't help but wonder if all that's keeping him from classic status is either the willingness to eat meat or enjoy having sex. No one needs a good lay as badly as Morrissey does.

Worst person you know went solo and made a pretty good album. Might have to go back and reassess my 3 and two 4s to the three Smiths albums because it slots in at 4th behind them but not by as much as I had expected (and hoped lolz).

Morrissey is one of those artists that I wish I would have explored more deeply before finding out that he's a racist twat. I do enjoy this music, but the menacing face staring at me from the album cover is unsettling.

I'm just going to put this out there - this is the first time I've listened to this or any album by Morrissey in its entirety. It came out in the early '90s when tween/teen me was preoccupied with grunge, which spoke to my soul. I'd heard some of his solo work but just a song here or there. But I listened to it three times. I can see why so many friends and acquaintances are/were big Morrissey fans. He taps into that melancholic, misunderstood energy that so many feel. His voice is lovely and soothing, the music was easy to listen to.

I have a love/hate relationship with Morrissey, and this album reflects that. Some of these songs I liked a lot, others not so much. 3 stars.

Really decent effort in Morrissey's solo career. I noticed an abandonment of the heavy synths of his earlier solo albums in favor of more modern techniques. But his voice is still so direct and emotional with lyrics on matters the character is so terribly confused about. Production techniques (e.g. the background conversations in "Spring-Heeled Jam" or bells in "Billy Budd") work super well and complement the subjects. But just like the synth-heavy sound of The Smiths, the melodic symphony amplifies the emotional energy of the songs, giving an entirely new perspective of Morrissey's artistry. Album reaches it's creative peak in the middle. Beginning felt slow, and last few tracks stagnated (but had a fitting closing track). Honestly, I do much prefer the 80s albums, but I do admit this is a very impressive 90s direction of his career. Favorite tracks: "Hold on to Your Friends", "Why don't you find out", "I am hated for loving"

El disco me gusto de nuevo musicalmente (nunca he seguido su carrera solo y asumí que la música probablemente no sería buena), la voz suena mejor que antes aunque todavía no logra ser algo que me agrade. Lo que más me llamó es la capacidad que tiene de evolución, en realidad no suena para nada como ochentero de los Smiths, se siente exactamente del año que es, debo de aceptar que tenía muy en el pulso la vibra musical del momento y la sabe aprovechar. Sin embargo de nuevo, no solo es "sombrío" sino que exagera a lo emocional y aterriza en la hueva en varias partes. Repetimos el punto de su finísimo carácter. Mejor de lo que esperaba (quizá mejor que lo que conozco de los Smiths). Sigue sin convencer o interesarme mucho.

Me pasa de nuevo con Morrissey: la música me llega a agradar mucho, pero su voz no la tolero por periodos largos. De hecho, los Killers tienen un cover a "Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself" y me encanta, especialmente porque es con otra voz. En fin, sin poner mayor atención a la voz y (por lo que leí de Casper) a su formita de ser, le alcanzaría para más estrellas.

Morrissey's vocals have a mysteriously melancholic quality that helps put Vauxhall and I ahead of most Indie or Chamber pop releases. While I can appreciate the passionate introspection and powerful poeticism, Morrissey's breathy drawn out vocals make most tracks sound earily similar. 3/5.

Vauxhall and I- Morrissy (1994): 7/10 Right off the bat I am impressed with the sound. The epic guitar and drums intertwined with Morrissys vocals is really captivating. We are off to a great start. Next, we have a mellower track that really showcases Morrissys cryptic writing style, with an intriguing use of what seems to be… Radio chatter? In the background. Once again, I am impressed by the guitar on the next track. “Hold onto your friends“ has officially converted me to this style of production, plus I’m digging the message lyrically. The next track starts out on a riff that’s borderline iconic. This stadium filling sound is really something. An upbeat haunting acoustic tune comes next, and I’m not complaining about this one. “The lazy sunbathers“ has a great message about complacency during difficult times. Album finishes epically with “speedway”.

Not sure what the big deal is.

Geweldige stem vind ik dit. Liesjes op zich niet zo spannend maar die stem is echt erg prettig om naar te luisteren.

Surprising a d almost funny. Take a Smiths album master tape, go to the mixing desk and slide every channel containing Johnny Marr's guitar parts down to zero. What you will be left with is this album. It's good, but it would have been so much better with him.

3. I love the Smiths, but Morrissey as a person? A bit difficult for me not to think of that while listening. Slightly uninspired sounding and seemed to drone on at times. It's fine, but nothing special for me, which was disappointing. I was waiting for a spark or a song that really stood out, but it just didn't happen.

Now My Heart Is Full - Pretty generic rock thus far, I think it had some bearings on future Coldplay releases? I can hear a lot of 90s. It's definitely not my favourite track. It is a bit catchy. Morrissey's voice is as smooth as ever, though. Not impressed by the guitars, can do a lot better. Springed-Hill Jim - The bass. The bass. I like it. Using samplers. This is Morrissey more like you've heard in the Smiths. This rocks more. I like the sampling. I like how it fits within the narrative of the song. The man is obviously a whore. Billy Budd - Rocking backtrack. I like it. The guitar is kind of psychedelic, very Hendrix-y. But it's overshadowed a bit by Morrissey's voice. Definitely my favourite song so far. Is this song a reference to the novel? Hold On To Your Friends - Nice little melody, I guess. I think this is going to a ballad. Social commentary on capitalism and happiness? Meh.... a bit hypocritical . The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get - I can fuck with this instrumental. I like it. It's.... Unique. A lot of repetition of lyrics throughout the album, especially regarding time. I like this track-- But it feels like Morrissey is just Morrissey. And Morrissey is a controversial figure. I can sort of hear a Pixies-like... Parallel. The distortion of the guitars are a treat and I feel like the instrumentals are what shines on this album and Morrissey could be removed, I'd enjoy these songs more. Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself - A groovy little piece. It's nothing extraordinary but it does its job. The commentary continues through the album through repeated imagery and lyricism. It has a recurring theme of death and loss and acceptance of death and loss. I Am Hated for Lovin - I like the instrumentals a lot. It's a good song, I'd heard it before. I don't know what else to say. It is kind of devoid of the usual rock and forced "agony" for lack of better words of the Smiths, it feels like a very very bittersweet goodbye. May be acceptance is really the recurring theme and motif of the album? He just doesn't belong, he doesn't have many friends... Morrissey needs a psychiatrist and a therapist, not to release albums. This feels more and more like a suicide note. Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning - Oh, I love the instrumentals. This is baroque rock. This is very worrying, as worrying as it is pretty. The poor girl didn't deserve to drown, what is Morrissey on about? This is a real album with a theme of accepting loss and death. Makes me want to read into his mind state when writing this. But the instrumental shines and even his vocals and his vocal delivery is very different. "Please don't worry..." Yeah, suicide notes have been written to sound happier than this album. This album will kill the mood if you play it during sex. The girl at the end is literally being silenced by the cymbals... She died. Used to Be a Sweet Boy - This is a pretty decent song, I guess? But very samey... Which is a problem with this album. Something went wrong? And he's not to blame. Is that his relationship with his father? I feel like I should have some context for this album, far more than is provided. Otherwise, we don't feel the "pathos" or the "acceptance" as much if we are not already initiated to Morrissey. The background vocals are amazing though, very angelic choir-like. Is Morrissey talking about himself dying or having died and being an angel now? The Lazy Sunbathers - World War? I'm sorry... I don't get this one. War is bad, I guess? But he seems like he's accepting it. This album in general is grim. It's a bit of a kill-mood, it makes you feel a bit depressed. And if that's you want, then sure, this album is for you-- All of you weird folks out there. Speedway - Oh, this song is faster. Chainsaw massacre? This is odd... Definitely cool but very grim very very very grim. A decent finisher to this "album", I think he's released all of his anger and got the pathos he sought. Score - If you know Morrissey and you like Morrissey, then... Sure, this album might be for you. That is, if you want to feel depressed. In that respect, it does really well; it conveys the artist's emotions but requires an already-existing bond to be able to be experienced fully. I would give it a 3.5/5... It's certainly not bad, but it's not on the podium for me. It's just shy of a bronze metal.

Really nothing grabbed me on this album until the abrupt car motor in Speedway.

Nothing like ending a good week with Morrissey driving me to self harm. Actually a better album than I expected with a few very solid tracks.

I have somehow managed to never listen to The Smiths or Morrissey in my life. I really liked this album. It’s really good! Morrissey’s politics, on the other hand 😬. Yikes.

Still sings well..

I feel bad rating another big name so low, but not a super big fan. The guitar is fine but Morissey's voice loses me in most songs. Like its good but its so soft and unique in a way I guess I do not appreciate like some other people in this group do (I am assuming)

I do love a bit of Morrissey (although definitely not the far right, slightly racist bit). This is a pretty solid solo album. Obviously not as good as The Smiths, but much closer to it than Jonny Marr’s solo stuff.

I like the voice of the singer, but dislike the music.

MOZZA!! He's such a prick. I can't emphasise that enough. But this is a great album both lyrically and muscially. Its still not as good as the Smiths though. 4/5

It is a fine album with great lyrics... He has done better though

I bought this for my dad back in HS. He was a big Smiths fan and didn't have any solo stuff. I didn't really like it as much at first. When I relistened in college I fell in love. No skippable songs. Biggest standouts are the more I love you, Lazy sunbathers and speedway. The album really ends on a bang. The drums on the last song are killer.

I have never really paid much attention to Morrissey and the guy's a well-known prick. But he made good music back then and this album sounds very 90's, which, in my book, is always a good thing.

Very nice starting. Has the same sadness that his work with the Smiths had. Albums has some gems that have lasted the test of time like "The more that you ignore me, the closer I get". Which thinking about is kind of a creepy song.

I like the sound of this one. This is one I would consider buying and would look into more of his music.

A pesar de que el señor morrisey me cae muy mal, una opinión neutral: Tiene dos rolas que están chidillas: why don't you find out by yourself y la de the more you ignore me the closer I get. Tiene cuatro infumables, totalmente odiosas, y el resto medio grises medio no pasa nada. Dos estrellas nomás porque no es kid rock.

I'm a huge fan of The Smiths, so naturally, I've always appreciated Morrissey's over-the-top emotion that he injects into his songs. And yet, while that is very much on display here, there's just nothing here that really stands out. All the songs oscillate between decent to good, and yet, after several listens, I can't say that I'm all that inclined to revisit this album anytime soon.

Very solid. Songs too repetitive. Great sound quality. Good lyrics. Not my type of music but still can appreciate it.

You know, pre-comeback Morrissey isn't as bad as post-comeback Morrissey but it's still pretentious, self-centered, sad-sack twaddle and I'm not here for it.

Not half bad. It felt like something that The Smiths would do if they had started in the '90s rather than the '80s, with some of the twinkly arpeggios swapped out for fuzzy or acoustic hooks. The quasi-genre of "crooner sings while his backing band plays a chord progression" isn't usually one I go for, but with the right accoutrements it can be a fun listen (see also: early Scott Walker). Best song: Billy Budd, which is punchy and melodic enough for my tastes.
