Listened Before: N Modern R&B... Meh. Pros: Loved "Super Rich Kids". I like some of the music here. Nothing too difficult to listen to, it's just not really my thing. Cons: Again, not my thing. Bra spridning på 'soundet', bra kvalitet på sampling:en. Både nyskapande och klassisk, riktigt bra album från någon som verkligen förstår musik. Platsar definitivt på listan men vet inte vad som hindrar mig att ge en femma, skulle kanske gynnas av att vara lite mer fokuserad? Också, inte samma skyhöga bangerratio som Blone, bara vetskapen att det albumet finns sänker detta album lite i sin helhet. Föredrar att lyssna på Blond som album, plockar hellre individuella låtar från detta.

A great album that seems to keep momentum all the way through. Forrest Gump is one of my favorite songs of the past decade. Pyramids is a 9 minute journey.

I rarely seek out or choose R&B, though I don't really know why. R&B can be so smooth, so filled with groove, and Frank Ocean is certainly no exception. I don't listen to enough R&B to understand what makes Frank Ocean stand out and deserve the accolades he has earned over the last decade. And this is my first exposure to his music, despite having been aware of his impact. But regardless, I really enjoyed this, and maybe should seek out Frank Ocean and other similar R&B more often.

I might need to listen to this album a few more times before I can figure out how I really feel about it. My first impression is that the back half (from Pyramid on) is really in the groove but now I need to go back and listen to the first half. The fact that I WANT to listen to this album a few more times to figure out how I feel about it speaks volumes when compared to so many other albums on this list.

Frank Ocean has a unique style that’s for sure. The consensus seems to be that there is no consensus to describe him. I’d go with lounge-y, amorphous hip hop. It’s no surprise that Pyramids is my favorite track as it is upbeat with electronic elements. Overall, the vibe is a tad too laid back for me. I’d like more of the Pyramids energy. However in the end, this is better than The Bends.

I get it, this project is based on a progression of books highlighting how clever the neck-beard and basement-dwelling rock critics are with going deep-catalog and obtuse. From my perspective I'd hope to find stand-out records from intriguing artists as a way to lure me in to further crate diving. In this case "Channel Orange" comes across as lazy, dull and amateur compared to "Blonde" - I would probably be dissuaded from looking any further into Frank Ocean. I don't know if Blonde is on this list (I'd give it a 4 for being haunting - lyrically/thematically intriguing) but this one gets a flat 2. I resent it being included in the 1001.

CO is one of the best 2010s R&B records. I don’t come back to this one as often as I do Nostalgia Ultra or Blonde but it still has some solid tracks. This rating definitely gets a boost for how much I used to listen to this record.

File under ‘horny albums’

I hear a lot of Gambino in Frank Ocean. Anyone who can do some genre bending and mix soulful lyrics with some silky smooth flow gets a pass from me. It gets some dings for being too long, and sounding a bit “more of the same” after the first half hour or so, but I had a great time listening to this. Super rich kids and crack rock are my faves.

Why are all these RnB albums so long? Well, there's a clear reason: Songs in the Key of Life. But why that album? Well, it's really good. Yet a further question: why draw from the same well constantly? Now that I have a harder time explaining. Admittedly, RnB has never really been my jam. I really don't feel myself prudish, but I have never considered that that what soul music needed was a dosage of crassness. Now, I recognise that as just a lazy prejudice, so I welcomed the opportunity to have my options guided by this challenge. Frank Ocean has been the best so far, but I still have a few qualms. Firstly, why the length? Remember the mantra: long and thin goes too far in; short and thick does the trick. Sweet Life and Super Rich Kids are essentially the same song, so why have both? Theere's no bad track, but the length diminishes more than it expands. Secondly, some of the lyrical conceits don't quite land. The centrepiece, Pyramids, has Cleopatra journeying to the present and becoming a stripper. I am struggling to grasp the point being made. Or take Forrest Gump, and wonder at how it casts Forrest Gump as well fuckable. One wishes for a shade more quality control. Do not misunderstand me, this is a good album (whereas Ceelo Green... Is The Soul Machine is diminishing with each new album). But the listener need not fret that much if they decide to skip it.

Good! I liked it, I'm not the biggest R&B fan so it's not the kind of music I would choose to listen to if I had nothing else, but it's cool how Franko uses different mediums of sound on the album

I liked the sounds of the music more than the lyrics/singing. I appreciated the singing more than usual rapping that goes with this genre, but the vocal melodies were not particularly imaginative. One takeaway was that I have not known many extremely wealthy people nor drug-addicted people in my life. #sheltered

Este álbum me sorprendió mucho, ya que no soy muy fan del R&B, pero me encontré escuchándolo como unas tres veces. No creo que algún otro álbum del género llegue a tener esta calificación por mi. Hay algo respecto de los arreglos musicales que lo hace diferente. No es sólo rap y no me pareció tedioso, además el uso de sonidos ambientales como el Play Station del intro le dio una textura especial. No le presté demasiada atención a la letra, pero después de leer el artículo de Wikipedia creo que debería. Mis canciones favoritas fueron “Pyramids” y “Super Rich Kids”.

Debo decir que para ser de este género y de ese estilito de música sensualosa y con toda la intención de usarse para coger, este disco no me pareció nada malo. Y tenía malas espectativas porque encima de lo anterior, recuerdo que cuando salió toooooooooodo mundo estaba mame y mame y mame y mame con Frank Ocean y su Channel Orange, así que me predispuso, y la sorpresa fue positiva. Sigue sin ser mi género favorito, pero acepto que nunca se vuelve aburrido o fastidioso y no más por eso alcanza las 4 estrellas.

It's a good listen. Easy. Soft. Rhythmic. I'm almost tempted to give it a 4 because of Fertilizer. It's to the point. Three lines and out.

I don’t get it. It has critical acclaim but I don’t think that vocal warbling over no melody and someone’s synthesizer and drum kit is entertaining to listen to. There are a couple of songs that hold together, but 80% of this is pretty painful.

Something i have not heard from an artist i havent heard of. It wasnt bad, i didnt really skip around. It didnt grab me either. I dont know how to rate, 2. no hits for me

pitchfork wet dreams. they absoluetly bum this album. this is the 3rd time i've tried to listen to this album and its still just an r'n'b album albeit alternative style. the best bit was hearing the original playstation power up sounds on the first track. also john is the shittest beatle.

We used to know him as Frank Sea before he hit the big time. Yep, young Frank got a bit too big for his boots and forgot about us, the little guys, his roots. I don't begrudge him his success though. The kid has a real talent.

Squeaky Usher. Like R Kelly, but without all the noncing (probably).... I mean, we don't know the real reason Ocean's 11 was called that. Still, ...better than Ocean's 8. Both in terms of the film and the connotations that I'm trying to imply, which are, that Frank Ocean nonces 8 and 11 year olds.

Pretty good RnB album. Probably didn't give it the deep listen it deserved.

The album is just a great vibe. Easy listening and suited to so many occasions.

This is one of my favourite albums, to the point where I was listening to tracks from it earlier today before this glorious website assigned me Channel Orange. If you want Channel Orange to be deep, it can be. You can sort the songs into pairs, consider Mr Ocean's exploration of his sexual identity and his telling of stories from different corners of society, both as a slice of life and a metaphor of his own experience. Or you can just take every song on their own, feeling sad or loved-up or defiant or introspective as the feeling takes you. "Bad Religion" stands as a glorious cornerstone of the album and ever fails to make my eyes leak. And best of all - this isn't even Frank Ocean's best work.

Rating: 7/10 Did not expect a PS1 intro sound on the first song. Strong beginning! I remember "Thinkin Bout You" being played constantly on the radio, overexposed me to it, so I might rate it lower based on that. "Fertilizer" is a great bridge-song. Really digging "Sweet Life", a super funky/groovy song. The bass lifts the entire song. Also really liked "Super Rich Kids". I'm a sucker for long songs, so "Pyramids" is totally my jam. That guitar at the end, and that keychange in the middle of the song. So good.

Top Picks: Pyramids and Sweet Life. Not a huge fan of this one. Some cool drum and bass stuff going on but for the most part, not really my jam.

Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of Frank's music I do enjoy a few of his songs particularly on this album and can understand why this took his career to a new level. Haven't enjoyed much of what he's released since though.

Easy listening, if this is your first foray into Frank Ocean he does bring a unique style that blends experimental sounds with his R&B/Soul talent. Some of Frank Ocean's style and sound can invoke reminders of Justin Timberlake's solo efforts, but this is a compliment, not a criticism, there are plenty of obvious differences between each to where Frank Ocean should confidently stand on his own here.

Another very nice sounding album with a lot of good moments, but nothing that ever stood out and stuck to me.

Crack rock! I just really wanted to write that. I liked several chunks of this album, and was lukewarm to others. There’s something about someone transitioning from rapping to singing R&B in the same song that is hard for my brain to process. If it’s a song where one person raps and another person sings? No problem. But if it’s all coming from the same mouth? I don’t know. It’s like a dude doing death metal growls and clean singing in the same tune. Just hard to get used to at first. But… Crack rock!

Hui, hier dann mal sehr ernsthafte (bis jetzt die hier bei weitem größte) Konkurrenz für Kanye. Man weiß erstmal gar nicht, wohin man gucken/hören soll und kommt auch bis zum ganz großen Hit - Pyramids - kaum aus dem Staunen raus. Toller Gesang, fantastische Soundscapes, Melodien die man erst kaum wahrnimmt und die einen plötzlich weit raus tragen. Und das alles viel feiner gesponnen als beim Irren mit dem Messiaskomplex, dabei aber nicht weniger aufrührerisch. Nur gegen Ende wurde es mir etwas lang, mag aber auch an allgemeiner Müdigkeit gelegen haben. Kratzt hart an der 5!

Esta lista a veces me hace sentir un inculto musical. Me sonaba el nombre de este músico pero nunca lo había escuchado conscientemente. Me ha gustado aunque no es mi estilo así que 3 estrellas para mí.

This album is almost ten years old which is WILD! I listened to it a ton driving around LA when I was there for work. I remember how revelatory it was at the time that Frank Ocean was bisexual—it was a first and was considered pretty dramatic. And here we are 10 years later and it doesn’t feel like a big deal at all. And this album? Such a boo from top to bottom. I hope Ocean makes more. Sometimes we have to wait for good things.

Just pressed play. Don't know anything about this record. Not sure I've heard anything on it. I generally like hip-hop/rap when it feels chill. So, I dig this. He's got a great voice. That falsetto is really great. I love it. The production sounds like there is a blanket over the speakers (see the snare sound in "Sierra Leone") and I really like that. Feels like a warm summer night.

Pretty cool vibes on this one. I heard a little Prince, a little Stevie Wonder - but overall a pretty unique sounds. I'll be singing "Crack Rock Crack Rock" probably for the rest of my life (just that line).

I remember everyone getting very excited by this at the time of release. I like it, the voice is great the production is great. That said, I still don't quite "get it" - the thing that elevates it from good to great.

Heavy bias here because I've spent hours and hours with this album (and Blonde) and good ol Cole Cuchna via the Dissect podcast. Everything about this album - the open letter coming out backstory, the double meanings, the skits, the instrumentation, the album cover, the song sequencing, the themes - is considered and layered with meaning. But its also not tedious or cold. Restrained, surreal storytelling. Unique production. Cleopatra in a strip club. Features are sparse but exactly where needed- numb rich guy iambic verse from Earl S, extremely tasteful John Mayer interlude, show stealing Andre 30000. If I didn't have a deep history with Frank I'd probably score this lower, but I do so A+

First time listening to Frank Ocean. He’s been very famous for very long and every time I hear his name I think of it as a sign I’m getting more out of touch. This album seemed very post modern, pulling from a lot of places, video game, TV, radio interludes. Early on in the album is felt too soft, too Pop R&B and i wasn’t feeling it—the sentiments and vibes of modern R&B doesn’t speak to me. Then I’m the middle of the album he has a run of great songs: Rich Kids, Pilot Jones, Crack Rock and Pyramids is a run of fives. Pleasantly surprised, there’s a lot of depth there, but overall a bit long and everything wasn’t a banger.

Hadn't really listened to Frank Ocean before, I enjoyed this album. Delivered far above my expectations. There was subtly and nuance here that was entirely unexpected. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it is derivative.

This music is the soundtrack for the beginning of the degeneration of music and society as a whole. This goes hand in hand with instagram slut culture and signifies the move away from the rock and indie movement into the faceless, pointless RnB/hip hop and mumble rap of the current age. Paving the way for morons like Takeshi 69, Post Malone and Travis Scott, It has also spawned a social acceptance for hyper feminism such as Meghan thee Stallion and Cardi B. Nasty Ass Pussy. Music is an 808, syncopated, hi-hat/snare arrangement away from utter devastation and failure as a concept.

Faultless production. It’s packed with smooth synths and bass and crackling drums. His voice is gentle and yet right at the front of the mix which is some trick. A great example of this genre

In the past couple of months I’ve listened to this record a dozen or so times. I’d think that not much of it was sticking – that the songs sort of drifted over me without ever pulling me into their current – and then a snippet of “Super Rich Kids” featured as a question in the work social club quiz and I felt great for knowing the answer. It’s probably too much to say, but I really felt like the table saw me in a new light in that moment. That dad guy, likely a fan of hard rock, knowing this song? Wow. I wonder if they still think about it? I do.

Heard of Ocean before this but didn't know his stuff. R&B singing isn't my favorite, but he's talented. More interesting were the beats, synths, and layers. Interesting listen.

Might feel a little different about this if it wasn't for the nostalgia surrounding it - it's a little bloated - but the hits HIT. Pyramids is still insane, plus you haven't lived until you've played die outside on a nice spring day with Lost drifting from the speaker. This album is a white, middle aged, music critic's wet dream as it gives them a chance to pretend they're still down with "tha kidz" as they obviously love this album so they can play it for their daughter's friends to show they're still cool. "He's black and gay! I'm so open minded." I bet they tell people that they're often mistaken for sisters! Not mother and daughter! For me, it's dull modern R&B, decent neo-soul vocals but with nothing interesting to say, dull plodding drum machines, melodies that don't go anywhere. Awful. An album that I would not have listened to without it being suggested, which I guess is the whole point of the platform. At first, I found it to be a little bland and uninvolving, far too preoccupied with samples, microbeats and other musical gimmicks. But then I began to "hear" the pleasing quality of Frank's voice and it became more of an enjoyable listen. By the time I reached "Lost", I realised that I would need to listen to the whole thing a couple more times before I settled on a judgement. Being tenacious in order to experience new music has been rewarded.

Bass grooves also featured in: "Monks" and "Pink Matter" -"Super Rich Kids" had some interesting lyrics and I liked the backing beat, but I thought the beat would like develop on some significant way -The whole thing was pleasant, it just was SLOW and boring to me throughout lots of it, but I feel like it had potential -"Pyramids" was probably the best song out of the album

Very good modern R&B, but I don't hear the "absolute classic" in it that a lot of online reviewers seem to. Well worth a listen, but it's not a new favorite of mine or anything like it.

Listening to this brings me back to being 16. For some of us, this album was one of the biggest deals in all of high school. I first heard of Frank Ocean when my friends told me about this album and how it had dropped a week early. What an event this record turned out to be. We all had our favorite songs off of it. I gravitated towards the Elton John sampling "Super Rich Kids" and it's narrative of decadent ennui, the epic "Pyramids," with it's multiple phases and fried-beyond-recognition John Mayer guitar solo, and the simple bliss of "Forrest Gump." And of course, "Thinkin About You." We all loved that song. It closed out prom that year. I'll always be more of a Blonde guy if we're looking at complete albums, but Channel Orange, to this day, has some of my favorite songs ever on it. And, maybe more importantly, it's one of those albums that acts as a time machine for me, back to a time of halcyon togetherness. Can't be go lower than a 5.

Im using 1001albumsgenerator, which gives you an album a day to listen to. I'm kind of on a hiphop streak so I thought i'd use the hiphop only option. Frank is one artist who I've barely listened to but got the hype. I thought Blonde was decent, and as I am liking it more, I still didn't really go beyond there. I wasn't hyped for this album, really. I just thought it would be a more earlier blonde, but seeing features like Earl or André, and production from Tyler kind of put my hopes up. And this hiphop + Alternative R&B does not dissappoint. I really do just adore Frank's singing in this record. Sweet Life, Thinking Bout You, & Monks are all great. In my opinion, I feel like these are more accesible songs and I think the the themes Frank pushes using them are more likeable. "Bad Religion" is very interesting to me, with its themes of unrequited love as a cult. Getting a spur of the moment therapy session from his muslim taxi cab driver. The specifics and just scenario of this song is great. And by god, "Pyramids" is one of the most recent songs to just, surprise me. Instant 10/10. Its first, almost lucid production blew my mind, and Frank'a vocals over this 2 part, 10 minute song is amazing. "Pink Matter" with 3 stacks is just beautiful too. Tackling more themes of love, and how "pink matter" is the substance that makes up our love & affection in our brains is great. The bass really compliments André's smooth raps. All I'm saying is that this is a great R&B album. If you're into R&B I can see this being enjoyable... As a newcomer I certainly didn't get the appeal. Bland tracking and free form flow left a bad taste. As much as there are many albums to listen to before you die, I would not have minded not hearing this one.

- this album fucks, groovy. - flairs of innovation but not too out there. - Subtle orchestration, buttery vocals - Interesting characters but anything but sympathetic to them. - Lyrics flip. Some keep it so real (looking at you bad religion), some are crass.

Just boring. It took me about 1 minute per each track to be sick of it.

First tones smell like sampled hip-hop. Okay second song starts... nope still... After a couple of songs it gets more into soul and develops a nice sound... and juuuuuuuust when I was like: "Hmmm I might actually like this." NOPE have another bullshit sample. It slowly starts to grow on me. Might revisit at a later date.

Fun. Groovy. Had some cool moments. Talented vocalist.

I haven't really delved into Frank Ocean's music before, there's only a couple of songs that I knew before listening to this album. But this album is SO good! I can't get over how good it sounds, from start to finish. Highlights were Thinkin Bout You, Sweet Life, Pilot Jones, Pyramids, Lost, Bad Religion. Definitely rate it 5/5 stars. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. This might very well be my favourite album I've been given to listen so far. I'm definitely going to be listening to more of his music after this.

Missed this album on Monday, and I know I love it.

I really tried to like this album. I've listened to it a couple times, and most of the time I just find everything about it so boring. Some of the tracks are so iconic and holds a special place in my heart, but other than the nostalgia I just really don't think it's that good of an album. Great lyrics and some good messages but they are almost always accompanied by repetetive beats and at times horrible vocals. It's definitely worth a listen though. Ok it has to be a 4 I just haven't listened enough:))

A misnomer. There isn't one Channle Orange; there are dozens, and Frank flicks between them like it's way past midnight and he can't drag himself to bed. Leans into loungey suave a little too hard, but nowhere near enough to undermine his incredible vision or storytelling gifts.

1. Start- intro track, very short. Loving the Playstation start up sound- very nostalgic. 2. Thinkin Bout You- the Frank Ocean song I am already the most familiar with. This is a nice slow jam that really shows off his voice. I love the lyrics in the chorus- "Do you not think so far ahead cause I've been thinking bout forever". These do such a good job at summing up unrequited love or just a personality that is constantly thinking about how things could be and how frustrating it can be to be with someone or pine for someone that doesn't think like that. 3. Fertilizer- another interlude. It sounds like a jingle for a commercial. Not much else to say! 4. Sierra Leone- Interesting lyrics about an accidental pregnancy? Some really pretty string instrumentation in the background and of course his voice sounds great. I do think I'll need more time with this song but I don't hate it. 5. Sweet Life- Obviously about wealth and privilege- "Why see the world when you got the beach?" kind of sums it up! I like the chorus of this song a lot. Interesting that "sweet life" kind of subtly sounds like "sweet lie". Obviously satirical and critical of this kind of lifestyle and how it's not all it's chalked up to be. I like Pharrell's production on this a lot. 6. Not Just Money- yet another interlude with a voiceover this time. Good commentary on how money actually can buy happiness and stability. 7. Super Rich Kids- love this one. Starts out kind of like "Bennie and the Jets". I love the blinker sound in the background- ties into the previous interlude. Wealth seems a little darker but still fun in this song. Basically these kids can do whatever they want but they're lacking love and care in their lives. 8. Pilot Jones- About getting high for sure. Appreciate it but it's not my fav track on the album right now. I definitely like the simplicity and airiness of it. 9. Crack Rock- Definitely a song about drugs, but not in a positive light. Also a little bit about police brutality. Not my favorite on the album sonically but the lyrics are very important. 10. Pyramids- This is a LONG song. I like the electronic sounds in this song. I love this song. Even though it's long, it's captivating the whole way through. I can vibe to this all day. Nice guitar from John Mayer at the end, too. 11. Lost- love everything about this song. One of the poppier, catchier songs on the album for sure. I get this stuck in my head a lot. So smooth. 12. White- All instrumental but I like it. It's soft and jazzy. 13. Monks- I think this song is about a groupie. It's going to take a little bit more time to grow on me. 14. Bad Religion- Ooh this one is a bit more dramatic- his voice sounds great here. I love the lyric "If it brings me to my knees it's a bad religion". That sentence is worth a thousand words! I also love that you could interpret this song to be about literal religion or about unrequited devotion to a person. 15. Pink Matter- Definitely a slow jam. I love the guitar in the background- very subtle but adds so much to the song. I love Andre 3000's rap, too. It ends very abruptly. 16. Forrest Gump- Clever metaphor here- "Forrest Gump, you run my mind boy". Musically not my favorite on the album- it's pretty simple. 17. End- Slower jam. Definitely just an outro. I feel like it kind of ends the album on an add, abrupt note. A lot to process but for the most part I enjoy this album a lot!

This album hits on so many notes, and serves as a great solo effort from Ocean. He finds his voice and leaves us with multiple ear worms and a well-crafted album of lyrics.

Honestly not really sure! My gut is to say I didn't really like the album, but I kind of liked the vibes of the music I guess. The lyrics were just a bit too weird for me maybe? Pink Matter was my favourite song.

What is this even? Not good in any case. Mostly it was bad and boring but unintrusive. I had to skip Super Rich Kids and then stopped altogether after a bit over half the album.

Absolutely horrible. Words cannot express how much I hate this music. Something about the R&B wharble is like nails on a blackboard to me. I can't listen to it.

Is this one of the best 4s so far? Probably yes. I am really surprised how well the album sounded. The melody with a differnt genres, including rap. There are some flaws, which tear it a bit down to make it a 5. But maybe one day...

Channel Orange is an amazing album and Frank Ocean is incredible. Flawless production, Frank Ocean's voice is so full of depth - the sound, the raw emotion, the range. Even the lyrics in this album are amazing, he really knows how to literally put you into his shoes as the listener and feel like you're experiencing the songs as you listen.
