Reviews (page 12 of 14)

The start song has a ps2 starting theme in... I liked Thinkin Bout You but to a degree where i include it in the liked songs. Pyramids wasnt bad but long so skipped :D Lost isnt bad either. Idk but i guess not my type maybe. Some songs felt like he was just talking, but in a good way like how Rex does. Caught me off guard when he said allahu akbar hahahahhahahha in Bad Religion. وش قصده

Expected more

Artificial soul.

He has all the ingredients unfortunately I only found a few song I liked.

Fine for background noise but just not my jam

Nice soundscapes. The vocals didn't really keep me engaged though. It was pretty chill

Really not keen on this style of R&B, with over-the-top, drawly vocals. Reminds me of Drake, but not as bad.

I do not get the hype for this album, personally, but I also do not really have a reason

Not known to me. Not very impressed. An OK album at best.

Never able to get into this one.

Another not-my-cup-of-tea album. This one was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year in 2012 and I know it was quite popular and appreciated, but I don't understand the hype. I have no problem with this kind of music, but this one in particular sounded lukewarm to me. The only songs I would listen to again sometime are Pyramids (which lasts almost 10 minutes) and Bad Religion. The rest - meh.

Das ging ziemlich lang. Besser als ich es mir vorgestellt habe, aber hat mich nicht umgehauen. War bei drei, wegen der Länge eins weniger.

Autotuned? Too much filler. Not 90s hip hop, don’t need that much filler

I can appreciate the album... But it's not my cup of tea.

While I'm a fan of neo-soul, this doesn't move me. Auto-tune makes me cringe. It feels like he's still working out what he wants to do, half-baked ideas jostling with positive directions. Feels like a mish-mash.

There might be greatness here, but apart from a couple of songs, I can't hear it.

Despite several attempts, I never managed to enjoy this album

Sure I remember liking this when it came out, but only recognised a few tracks and wasnt really that bothered. Quite liked Lost and Monks,Super Rich Kids is canny too. The rest is a bit samey, a bit too rnb for me

After some contemplation I did not use a private session for Spotify. This album was fine, nothing really jumped out at me, but nothing annoyed me. It was like drinking tepid water in a room temperature doctor's office. There is no point in giving it another listen.

Yeah this isn't really for me. I find it interesting that an album like this could make it on this list. It doesn't have anything unique going for it. I suppose the production was something that would be copied over and over after so maybe that's something. Though some might call it a plague on music production. And I hate the Auto Tune. It's so distracting and terrible sounding. He's got a really nice voice when he's actually singing, why make it sound fake and weird? It doesn't add anything to the music. But this album is also just boring, like I feel like there isn't really much to keep anyone's attention. This is one of those albums that I hate to play on Spotify because now my algorithm will be all messed up and I'm going to get stuff like this suggested for weeks to come. 1.5/5 rounding up because I feel generous today.

Not my thing, but it was ok.

Not my style

I hope I'm not judging this album unfairly since I've had such high expectations for it, but I truly don't think it lives up to the hype. It's decent thematically and lyrically, but it also doesn't offer anything groundbreaking, even for the time it came out in. I could think of several different r&b artists who had released similar albums around that time or earlier. My main gripe with this album though is the way it sounds—the instrumentals are for the most part boring, and by the time I got to "Pyramids", I was just glad to hear anything different. Speaking of, "Pyramids", "Super Rich Kids" and the instrumental "White" are the three best tracks in my opinion. I know that this review has been mostly me complaining, but I don't think it's a bad album, just nothing to go crazy about. I'm just surprised that this is for some people one of the best albums of all time. 2.5 stars

Too poppy for my taste, yet somehow also feels flat. Bargain-bin R&B masquerading as something more. I'll go listen to some Ne-Yo instead. I did enjoy Andre 3000 though.

Just not for me. It seemed a bit unusual, almost trying to fuse pop and R&B but it just felt very generic and blah to me.

I really want to like this, the production is amazing, and some of the music is fantastic, but I just can't stand his voice. When he's low it's that monotone Drake type voice, and when its high it's that high pitched R&B voice I dislike. He sounds a little more Bruno Mars on Bad Religion, which I don't mind, but still. Not a lot of heavy hitting songs either. Pyramids I guess, but a lot of downtempo R&B stuff. Forrest Gump is probably the standout for me, but even then it's a tepid standout.

Not for me

Frank Ocean has a brilliant voice but the album just doesn't click with me, with few stand out songs.

This was so not my taste. I found it mostly painful to sit through.

Don’t understand why this is on the list. There have certainly been worse but this is also not a good listen. It is not memorable in the least.

meh. pretty one-dimensional. don't get the hype on his lyrics-more like singing to stream of consciousness. ok as background music but that's about it.

Ohhh so this is why everything sounds like this now? Don't try and trick me with the Playstation thing, I'm more of an N64 guy anyway.

Every time I think I'll finally fall head over heels for it, and every time, I'm blindsided by how inconsistent it is

Almost saccharine.

Not my style, don't like his vocals

Need to lose the interlude pieces and the falsetto voice

I am not the target audience for this. At least I now have enough experience to state that I don't care for Frank Ocean? I didn't even know who he was before this album came up. Been living under a rock for the last 15 years, that's part of why I signed up for the 1001 albums in the first place. My middle aged horizons have been expanded in a direction I didn't particularly enjoy, but that's growth for you.

This was okay. Not really my type of music but somewhat interesting.

Pleasant enough but instantly forgettable. I know this because a few hours have passed between finishing listening to it, and typing this. And I can’t remember any highlights or lowlights. I know I wasn’t impressed enough to bother with a quick re-listen.

Certainly not Billy Ocean. This man has received lots of praise over the years from music press, and I can see why. It was a very interesting take on modern R&B, wuite experimental. I liked his voice too.

tres mid

Mumble rap. Just can’t get into it

Boring ambience that sounds like it should be playing in a starbucks

Inoffensive but not really my thing.

Not for me

Not a lot here I like, though there are moments. Not a big fan of modern R&B or its production.

A mixed bag of really good soul and really plain modern rnb. 2.5 best tracks sweet life & crack rock.

I know this one by reputation, it was popular and highly-regarded when it came out, but I've never heard it before, and can't swear I've heard any of the individual songs before either. It has kind of an interesting structure, sort of like Smiley Smile, a collection of short snippets and suites. The whole fits together well, but I don't really like any of the individual pieces. In particular I can't understand why it was noteworthy. It's fine R&B, closer to the 90s Boys 2 Men-type style than to Marvin Gaye. Ocean has a fine voice, but not enough to carry the CD, and there's basically nothing of interest going on musically. I guess you're supposed to get really into his lyrics - I don't typically do that, but would submit that there's nothing of interest lyrically on songs like "Crack Rock" either. I quote: "Crack rock (Ooh) Crack rock (Ooh) Crack rock How you feeling, girl? (Ooh) How's the gutter doing? Crack rock" Whatever. Post-2010 the pickings get real slim, if they want to include this one as their representative of the post-good-music era, fine by me.

OK. Quite dull.

I’d not heard this before and having listened to it, I doubt I’ll listen to it again

Correcto

I don't know if it was a genre defining album or just another album in the genre. It was not memorable in any way. I tried listening to it a second time with my girlfriend that's into that kind of music and we turned it off three songs in.

Just. o.k. but nothing remarkable for me. Far too much howling!

Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange has moments that shine when he really lets loose vocally. When he leans into singing with genuine emotion, the result can be captivating. Pyramids is a perfect example, blending intricate storytelling with an unforgettable melody, and Sweet Life has a warm groove that pulls you in. Andre 3000’s guest spot is a high point as well, bringing his signature energy and charisma to the album. However, a lot of Ocean’s vocal style on Channel Orange leans toward that reserved, almost monotone delivery that I associate with Drake. The detached, almost indifferent tone often pulls me out of the music rather than drawing me in. It’s as if he’s holding back, which makes it hard to connect fully with the album, even though I can see the craft in it. On a lighter note, I couldn’t help but mishear “set the cheetahs on the loose” as “said Vegeta’s on the loose,” which was a funny moment in an otherwise mellow listen. Overall, while there’s definitely artistry to appreciate, I just found it hard to engage emotionally. Standout Song: Pyramids Score: 2/5

I like the chill sounds and synth pads on Thinkin Bout You for the vocals - especially the falsetto - aren't doing it for me. Cool jazzy beat on Sweet Life and there's a really fat synth on Pyramids that is probably the best part of the album. Lost actually has a hook too. I dunno. I thought I would like more of this, it's a lot of slow, atmospheric tracks. And I still don't like the vocals. 2 stars for Lost and that part on Pyramids.

just not my thing

I enjoyed super rich kids and lost. Definitely not my style of music but it definitely sounded pretty good.

Just not my thing, I appreciate he is talented but it's not something I'd listen to again, found the album too long as well, 12 tracks are enough, one or 2 moments I liked, Andre 3000s short cameo being the stand out

Not my favourite

It's a bit too slow and smooth to really hold my interest for 55min. Didn't hate it.

Some okay beats and wild lyrics

Frank Ocean is someone I have heard a few tracks of. Found this album quite flat at the start, not much better in the middle overall very meh. Stand out tracks: - Sweet life - Crack rock - Pyramid - Pink matter

The producer failed, in my opinion. The songwriting felt hushed, and the whole album had an unfinished touch. Ocean, as a singer, is quite good for this genre.

Intetsägande.

Had high hopes for this, but is actually quite hard to find much positive to say about it. Annoying vocal, obnoxious lyrics, maybe a couple of backing tracks have a little interest. Most disappointed I've been at an album so far.

Frustratingly, there's some good things on the album. Ocean has a decent falsetto, the music has some pleasant dreamy sonic textures and I quite like the sound effects. On the downside, it's a bit disjointed and the songs are repetitively simplistic, incomplete or don't really go anywhere. For example, 'Fertilizer', sounded quite interesting, but tuned out to be snippet of an incomplete song. The vocals are another problem. In the lower range, his voice is rather lame. And sometimes he uses a speaking "response" (like on 'Sierra Leone'), which is really jarringly cheesy. It's s a good example of an artist who has good intentions, but uses the studio to masquerade half baked, lazy songwriting (or possibly just lacks the ability).

Album 555 of 1001 Frank Ocean - Channel Orange (2012) Rating : 2 / 5 This just did nothing for me. Isn't that it is a bad album...just doesn't appeal to me.

6,5/10 Highlights Thinkin bout you

Good but a little too generic imho 5/10

Not for me. Tried a couple songs but it fell flat so I didn't finish it

Meh. Was ready to like after few tracks but my goodwill evaporated in boredom. 55 minutes of not much going on.

Meh, Just not my thing.

Did not like it. Not my thing at all.

I just cannot buy into music like this which lacks melody. Lyrically it is surprisingly wide in scope but track after track of the downbeat mood is just a bit too much for me.

I made the mistake of going into this album expecting fun 80’s funk. Alas, I had mixed up Frank Ocean with Billy Ocean. I know that Frank is quite loved, but this genre of music has never really done much for me. The intro did leave me interested (admittedly because of the PS1 sounds) but after than it fell a little flat for my ears. I understand that people love this, I’ve just never really found the appeal myself. Each to their own, and all that stuff.

Just don't really like the genre. Some songs were good though. Will I listen to again: 1%

Seems to me largely aimless noodling, even if there is talent, a nice voice, and the odd snippet of excellence. Hard to gauge

Not really my kind of music.

it's ok, but nothing outstanding - background music

A decent listen but not sure why it is on this list

When this came out, everyone went crazy for it. I tried listening to it then and was extremely bored. I did not get it at all. I was a big odd future guy and he was with them. The only song I really liked was super rich kids. Listening to it now, I feel the same way. I don't get why this was so revolutionary. There was a whole genre of r&b that sounded just like this and I also found boring. I still see people posting about listening to this album and crying. I don't get it.

Bit boring, I few on there that I liked

Boring

Hair salon at the mall kinda music.

i understand why it was so popular but it's not for me

Ich weiss ehrlich gesagt nicht, was ich mit diesem Album anfangen soll. Es nicht per se schlecht, aber es gefällt mir einfach überhaupt nicht.

Probably great, just missed my taste by a mile

He trick me into giving him more stars by starting the album with PlayStation boot and Street Fighter character selection menu sounds...

Varies between insipid and dull, with the occasional hint of interest (Lost, Bad Religion). Fades into the background without being truly annoying, so 2 stars instead of 1

not for me

I can appreciate how fans of this genre would really enjoy this album, but that’s just not me.

this was boring

I had Frank Ocean confused with Billy Ocean. Once that was resolved, I found Channel Orange kind of dull. Frank’s voice is nice but not unique - at times he sounds like Pharrell Williams. Lyrically I was less than impressed but it was a smooth tolerable listen.

Фоновая музыка для секса. Музыканты молодцы, а копченый пидарасик френк оушен - не зачëт

Didn’t engage me that much but feel with repeated listens I’d come to enjoy more…. Might revisit…

I don't get it :(

I'm not an r&b guy, so I'm not qualified to judge this. I'm told it was groundbreaking. Has some interesting lyrics, but I do wonder. Is he in love with Forrest Gump?

This did not need to be this long.

there's some really corny shit on here (super rich kids, rock, forrest gump). each track feels fairly fresh on a first listen but it's almost less than the sum of its parts because it lacks a cohesive sound. more of a collection of singles than anything, and way safer than an album so highly regarded ought to be. because this album feels so scattered, the skits end up coming across as forced and not serving any grander purpose. to give a comparison, 808's & heartbreaks may be rougher around the edges but its sound and production create a much more even landscape plus kanye writes hooks with far more pop and punch than ocean. not to dump on this the whole time though, thinkin bout you and lost were definite highlights even if they do kind of sound like drake songs. actually, in a way a lot of channel orange sounds like if drake was 20% more talented. im hopeful for blonde when it inevitably comes up though.

I had this over a weekend and really tried to get into it. I think there’s definitely the potential for a 4 or 5 star album in here somewhere - the production gets much more interesting after 25mins or so. But generally I found it a bit boring and formulaic. I don’t like the low end hiphop or the jiggy singing high bits. Could scrape up to a 3 if I was feeling generous, I’m not though.

Some real sad boi music here.

Fine, I sort of like the vibe but it’s too slow for me. Not really my style.

Didn’t think I would have rated this so high considering it’s not my usual genre of music.

Not for me

I know this album is well regarded but it really didn’t do much for me, maybe I just don’t like this type of R&B but I was just bored for most of it

He’s clearly talented but this album isn’t for me.

probably closer to 2.50 or 2.75 could i write poetry to this? n

Probably great sexytime music. Alone and in the daylight...not so much.

The vocals and the music sound like they are from 2 different songs. Never been able to get into this album.

Idk what to say it was weird. Felt forced

C'était générique.

Not for me.

"I'm not sure why, but this album isn't resonating with me. Most of the tracks blend together, making it hard to distinguish one from another, and only few of them really stick in my memory. The standout tracks on the album for me are "Thinkin Bout You" and the absolutely amazing "Lost." I must have listened to "Lost" a million times. In fact, back in 2019, I was so inspired by the song that I wrote a poem based on it. It was published in a Danish literary magazine." I wanted to give the album a single star, but "Lost" made me bump it up an extra star.

Frank Ocean, son of Billy Ocean (probably), is a new listen for me. This album takes familiar R&B, soul, and hip hop vernacular and dissects and reassembles it into an experimental and diffuse collage. Mary J. Blige's "Real Love" is stripped down, slowed down, and stretched out like Dali's melting clocks, in "Super Rich Kids" for example. Some interesting moments are here in the abstract soundscapes, but I couldn't really immerse myself in the material and connect emotionally. Maybe that's a "me" problem; I think I've aged out of the target demographic. I leave it to the children.

Its probably generational... I don't like it at all. The lazy crooning vocal style detracts from the lyrics and potential musicality. Yet I know that many will rate this at 5 stars

Some interesting grooves. Story songs, but without much subtlety. I do feel transported into a world I'm unfamiliar with, I enjoyed that. Not Just Money, Super Rich Kids, and Crack Rock carry this whole thing for me. A lot to recommend but it doesn't make me feel anything. I like the minimalism and chill tempos. I would need more time with this. Seems like Frank Ocean (if that IS your real name!) is not that into making music and this was something he shedded like a snake skin from his lifestyle. It's ok.

I did not enjoy this album.

a dude repeating the title of the song over some beats super rich kids pyramids

It’s not bad, but I just don’t see it as exceptional.

2stars

Has to be one of the most overrated albums ever.

This album is bound to drop some panties.

4-5/10 very mid album. I don't see the hype

Thinkin Bout You Sweet Life Super Rich Kids Lost Monks Bad Religion Why am I just now finding out where “a potato flew around my room before you came excuse the mess it made” came from. Maybe just not for me. Reminds me of Michael Bublé. It’s alright but idk I’m just not vibing with it. It sounds boring and basic

Liked Fertiliser - I'll take bullshit if that's all you got

Meh. Easy listening. Reminds me of Childish Gambino but not nearly as good. Not my genre to be fair, so not one I can talk about with authority, but just didn't quite vibe with it.

This album is okay. Not to my taste. He is talented but this just doesn’t resonate with me and I would not listen to any tracks again.

nah, too much high pitched "ouh baby" and "yeah yeah yeah". Too many random non-music parts.

Not my cup of tea. Over produced.

This is an album that really shows me my age. I think you absolutely had to be there for this one and I wasn’t so it does nothing for me. A lot of the reviews for this album seem to rely heavily on nostalgia. Very much not in my wheelhouse and this album made me feel old for it being so lauded and yet so lost on me. But now I’m seeing that Frank Ocean is older than me. I don’t know, man. Maybe I’m just padding this review out to avoid the Steven Stills album I see is up next waiting for me.

Not my cup of tea

I have never heard anyone sing about a crack rock with so much passion and soul. Also, much like I am quite confident that Annie is not OK, I understand that Cleopatra is employed at the Pyramid and is scheduled to work this evening. I know this appeals to a sizable niche, so I won’t leave it in the basement. 2

It was good, there were some good songs but it was kinda boring and bland.

2* not my genres of music, although I appreciate his voice.

Pretty underwhelming, which is a shame because I’d heard it talked about as a great modern soul album. I was hoping to discover another gem like Good Kid Maad City. It shares the same hyper-active production as that record and To Pimp A Butterfly, which I also really enjoyed (thanks Paul), but while those albums feel inventive, this just felt gimmicky. Hip hop maybe lends itself better to a magpie approach as it’s always relied heavily on samples and mixing up genres. This just felt confused.

Most of this album I don’t get, at all. Slow, boring beats with mumbling vocals, which is a shame, cause he can really sing. When I get to Pyramids, the pace picks up a little, the beat hits harder and it has an interesting buildup. Lost is my absolute favourite on the album, and it’s such a summer banger. That’s why it’s a shame that White enters the chat to lose all momentum. Bad Religion is actually quite nice, but it stops there. Will occasionally spin Lost again, but nothing else.

Can’t judge properly as not my cup of tea. Inoffensive but a bit bland

Not really my style

Poco musical?

I enjoyed some of it but not enough of it to rate it higher. I like the slower emo tunes, not so much the 'rap-ier' ones.

This album was playing when I picked up my granddaughter. I asked her to wait to play her music until I finished my album. She commented that she'd never turn off Frank Ocean. Nice bonding moment.

Pretty dull. I don't particularly enjoy R&B and this did nothing to change my mind. It felt a bit like a throwback to 90s UK garage in places, but ultimately not worth listening to in my opinion. I was going to give this 2 stars for effort, then I saw Mr Ocean has some pretty nasty views, so 1 star it is.

Seicht zu hören. Hat mich aber nicht vom Hocker gehauen.

Good bit of variety, still coherent. If the region in your brain that enjoys pop music works I bet this is nice. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

So this is Frank Ocean eh? Pleasant, I suppose, but in a neutral way.

I've been forcibly removed from the millennial generation by standing on the hill that Frank Ocean and this album are both terribly, terribly overrated

2/5 serviceable R&B.

Propsit ps1 startupista

Like a really boring version of the weeknd

I've tried a few times to get into Frank Ocean's music a few times. While I do enjoy some of it, I just am not liking as much as I hope I would. Couple of fantastic songs on here I keep on repeat, but I could do without a huge majority

Orange you glad you only had to listen to this just once all the way through?

This didn’t really do much for me. I thought it was quite forgettable (especially considering the only thing I remember is the line about running out of Trojans in Sierra Leone and that was more comical for me). Do you remember that Dana Carvey skit where he talks about rock stars just looking around and making up words as they go? Choppin’ broccoli! This felt a lot like that.

I’ve listened to more Hip Hop in the 100+ days of this project, than in the whole of my life previously. And I’m still not a fan. This is not really bad, though. The soul aspect helps along. And the beats are more shuffling than pounding. But still too much fixed beat, too much mostly spoken vocals, not enough melody. Too much auto tune (anything more than none is too much). But there is some sense of these being actual songs, and that’s good. I was feeling generous, was going to give a three, but the longer it went, the more I lost interest. I found myself checking “how much more” when it was just past 1/2 through… too often. By the time I was about 75% through, I was down to a 2. Sorry, just too much. 2/5

Heard good things about Frank Ocean but unfortunately this is the first and last time that I will listen to this album.

I liked it better than I expected but I had really low expectations from brief previous encounters. Won’t be going into my rotation but I can see how it would be important within its genre.

Too repetitive in lyrics

Some ok stuff, but not really my thing

Incredibly overrated.

This is a realy unconventional Album, and I really don't like it. Why are there 3 tracks under a minute? It just seems to slow the album down and make it disjointed. I could possibly forgive the first one at the start of the album, Because I can see what he's trying to do and I didn't mind the nostalgia hit. However the other two are just annoying and pointless. Then he goes and puts a track that on here that just under 10 minutes, MAKE YOUR MIND UP!!!!!. I have said it before, any song that is over 5 minutes needs to be something special and unfortunately pyramids isn't that. I would rather climb a pyramid than have to listen to that song again. Also don't like particularly hearing the N word in songs, most of the time there is no need for it. Also there are bits of talking in the songs that just don't work for me. I feel like this has been a pretty negative review so I will end on a positive I like how the first track is called start, and the last track is called end.

Is it just me or does modern R&B seem insincere, like they don’t mean what they are signing about. They’ve got the technique down but it’s missing passion and soul. 1.71

Not my cup of tee, feels artificial with the singing

Modern soul that at times moves dangerously close to Hip Hop. 2/5

Maybe it just wasn’t for me? Once I started thinking of the old Vine, I was too distracted to care. That, and if I’m going to listen to this style of music, I’m going to just go with Childish Gambino, or Kendrick Lamar. I’m not sure if I’ve ever listened to frank ocean before today, but I probably won’t come back to it, unless made to.

It was definitely an album that was meant to be listened to completely as no song stuck out. His speaking rapping and singing voices are all so different. He’s talented but this didn’t grab me.

Listened to this last year and wasn't blown away. Pyramids was a good song from memory but not one I'm rushing back to.

I give this album two stars because I can enjoy the content of the album in small doses. I am very impressed with Frank Ocean’s creative integration of many sound elements, and he has an extremely versatile voice. However, for the arrangements and production of the songs on this album, which are so heavily dominated by the drum tracks, a little bit goes a long way for me.

Angenehm, nicht nervig, aber nicht mein Musikgeschmack. Fabi fand es ganz cool, Lina hat es total gut gefallen.

Some catchy stuff I supposed. I didn't hate it but I did not like it.

I've never been a fan, don't get the hype and am sure I've listened this once and never thought of it again

I can't find any merit in this. I know people rave over Frank Ocean and I've tried his albums before, but on a concentrated listen I didn't find anything that engaged me. Bland and boring.

Some of the music was good. Just could not get into it.

Chilled, but not super interesting. Did not get why this is on the list. Maybe the lyrics? Cannot really tell...

Some songs were nice, some were just noises and 29 seconds long. Not great tbh.

really meh

Not for me.

Meh. Low energy lounge singer vibes. Not really my thing.

When this album came out, I thought it was extremely overrated simply because I wanted to cut against the grain on all things pop music back then, and admittedly spent very little time with it at all. Let's see how that opinion aged. Uhh, significantly better than I expected? Pyramids is basically the only song that maintained my interest the entire time.

I’m glad I had the chance to give this album another listen. I had tried it when it came out thanks to the critical noise it was getting. But it wasn’t for me then. And, uh, it’s not really for me now either. But I can see why people who appreciate modern R&B would like it. Good for what it is, but not especially a kind of music I spend time listening to. 2.5/5 for me.

Did Start feature the old PS startup sound? The interstitials (?) between some songs are strange. I dig some of the sounds, but overall kind of meh for me. 2* because I didn't totally hate it. Enjoyed: Sweet Life

Hooray a debut album from a popular artist I know nothing about (Album 30/10001). Feel like this is something I'd hear in a hair salon or something. It's not my vibe. It has a ton of streams on Spotify, maybe I'm missing something. I'm bored, I'm hoping the back half is more entertaining. It's like emo r&b.. -- I wish it were funkier. Some of the best parts are the skits. Review of Reviews: People either really like this or are scathing considering it part of the "denigration of society." .. what a boomer thing to say. lol. Best Track: Fertilizer..

pretty mediocre

This album did pretty much nothing for me. His singing and songs have no energy. The songwriting is formulaic. The word that sums it up is meh. Songs that were ok: Sweet Life (sounds like Stevie Wonder), Crack Rock, Pyramids (I actually liked this one), Pink Matter (liked Andre 3000 on it, but the lyrics are cringe).

R&B+Hip Hop touches with mumbled Rap in falsetto and tenor. Not a fan.

Pretty chill at times

Maybe because I didn’t particularly pay attention to the lyrics I didn’t get the best office but really just didn’t vibe with it too much.

eh not my type, kinda just sound scapey

# 100 : a bit lame for my 100th album, but there you go. ok music, but not my style, I tolerated it but I wont go back to it. it is drawn out and samey. Favourite Track : Sweet Life Listened: 01/11/2023

Some tones like Prince but way to much synthesized and dubbed for actual enjoyment.

I believe that Super Rich Kids can be taken as a microcosm of Channel Orange. The music is laid-back, but there's a steely underneath. Ocean's singing is sweet, but weathered. There's an interesting kernel, but it is stretched out too far. The lyrics, I'm not sure there's anything all that perceptive here. Sure, it's better than Drake, but so what? On the song, Earl Sweatshirt steals the show with his delivery, his rhymes, his tonal inflections. And therein lies my confusion. Surely, by featuring, Sweatshirt is indicating his respect and admiration for Ocean. What for?

Not bad considering it's not really my favourite genre. Though I was waiting for it to finish by the end.

Not my style…

OK. Not for me

Enjoyed most of the backing tracks. Not a fan of rap/pop, so album got tiring quickly

Överskattat. Jag förstår inte hypen kring Frank Ocean och det är väl några spår som är bra, men överlag är det svårlyssnat, tycker jag. 2 av 5.

Funky, chill. Maybe suitable as background music on very quiet, when you're trying to relax. I wouldn't listen to this otherwise.

Admirable for its abstract, challenging soundscapes. Not so much for its abstract, challenging melodies, which meander, unmoored from any foundation, refusing to resolve. The lyrics are unconventional, poetic, with perfectly timed stop-you-in-your-tracks lines.

I don't get the hype. 2/5

Solid album, but not one I would play regularly

This album meant like nothing to me, i just didn't like it that much

Not my thing

Not for me, but I see why people like it. Very relaxing, almost lo-fi.

Meh. This is not my jam.

urgh...

Not my jam.

Too r&b on the vocals for me

Not my favorite

NIce laid back atmosphere, but also boring

Meh. I found it pretty dull.

So cozy and sweet. This album reminds me of NaissanceE, a really good video game. Same open and airy aura, a grand illusion of vastness. Pretty chill.

Not a big fan, sorry Mr Ocean

Always found Frank massively overrated even before the Coachella nonsense. Decent but unimpressive soul music that goes through one ear and out the other. D

Didn’t like any of the songs

not for me.

When this first started, I was kind of excited. I didn't expect it to sound like that at all, it has a nice sound to it overall. The lyrics really lost me.

Unmemorable

Its not bad just boring as fuck

I liked "Pyramids" and some other songs here and there. But otherwise not my type of music. Very american, it tries really hard to convince you it's coooool, but effortlessly.

ouagadougou type mfer... Ocean wanted to approach sound and song structure differently on the album. ensinnäkin, miten vitussa valtameri pystyy tollasia tekemään heh...toiseksi, mitä vittua blud vohveloi... tosi hyvä albumi, 2 tähteä. joku sanoi että Not a fan of the language. jos tarkoittaa englantia niin samaa mieltä.. pyramids

black cleopatra song was topical but other than that it was run of the mill

Let me start off with the good. Love the album name and cover. Mom's favorite color was orange. Miss you, momma. After listening to Aretha, then reading about this album, thinking another R&B day, I was excited. I say quite a bit, I love me that R&B. Then I listened..... Excuse me while I go on a boomer rant. What the hell happened to modern day R&B and rap? I can't think of anything since the end of the 90's that actually make you feel the music, groove in your seat and can't wait to get home and grab your girl or boy or whoever you spend the day thinking about and love them up. This guy tried, but lyrically, just a big meh. Just doesn't get there. Have to say I was really disappointed here. At the end of Pink Matter, I heard motherphuggen this, motherphuggen that and then get to song called Forrest Gump. In a perfect world, he followed up Pink Matter with a song called Diehard and used the line Yippee Ky A motherphucker. I guess it wouldn't help the album, but it would have made this guy smile. I really wanted to like this. I didn't. I'm going to score a 2, but just because I loved the album cover and I thought of Diehard. And his voice was decent. 2 His voice was fine and I even liked the first song, Thinking About You. That was about it for me.

2.5 Oh, Frank Ocean - back when he was still a hero to us, before having a career just long enough to become the villain. I’m familiar with some of his stuff, though this is my first time giving him a full album listen… and unfortunately I just don’t feel that anything was gained from it. His musical style involving a fusion of pop, R&B, and jazz is something that I feel should be iconic and enjoyable on paper, especially in relation to a lot of his pop contemporaries, yet nothing about it really jumps out to me, including the vocals, which, yeah, sound good, but really feel far from the more standout or unique performances I’ve heard. Overall, the songs here do just sufficient enough of a job to at least stand out to me from a lot of other 2010s pop, but not quite to a point where I feel the desire to go back and give another listen. My favorite part wasn’t even really a song - it was hearing the Playstation startup noise at the beginning. It’s such a cool sound effect and super nostalgic, so I thought I was in for an exciting listen with that at the head - I was wrong. However, the inexcusably worst part for me? Somehow it makes André 3000 feel kind of mediocre - not even sure how one does that. It’s like a bowl of vanilla ice cream - not particularly exciting or my preferred, but I wouldn’t complain about having it served to me. I really, really want to like this guy because I know he’s considered a modern musical legend, but for the most part, everything I’ve heard just lacks a certain hook to really pull me in. I do admittedly enjoy the song Ivy on his follow-up album Blonde though, so I’m willing to give more of his stuff a chance to see what all of the hype is about. This could maybe be a 3 on a good day, but for now I’m airing towards a 2.5. Anyway, album and Coachelle fiasco aside, I do want to say I have respect for him for his advocacy of gay and trans rights - Happy Pride everyone!

I don't linke it much

Alright but the sole existence of Not just money pulls this down a star. Like the first few but it got worst. Doesn’t help I’m not a rap fan but some songs are still definitely a 5 star

There is pretty much nothing interesting in this album

2. There's just something so boring about this. Like, I can't even hate on it, it's giving absolutely nothing.

This isn't my genre and it didn't pull me in.

Melodic enough, but not really for me

It has its moments

There are much better R&B options out there.

I don't like it. My wife says "no, you don't like R&B". Either way there is one thing that I do know; I don't like Frank Ocean.

Not for me, this, I don't understand the acclaim. It's not impressive in terms of overall sound, he's not a great lyricist not is there anything special going on there with structure or rhyme, the beats aren't memorable, he can't sing (plus there's some autotune guff and I hate all of that, it comes across like a stream of consciousness he's put on record rather than doing something coherent, and it's no better than lots of R&B from 10 and 20 years earlier.

Very disjointed and struggles to keep me engaged.

I can see the appeal of this album to some, but it is not for me.

He has the heart for it, I just don't really go for it myself

Initial thoughts; interesting sound affects. As soon as he starts singing all autotune nonsense. Then the tunes don't really "go" anywhere. some ok background beats I guess but overall dull and repetitive. 1.5

A.A.D. city' gekozen.

Yeah nah, this is not my jam. I did not look forward to a second listen but I perservered and my faves would be Pyramids and Bad Religion.

Nah not for me

Aika meh kamaa, erikoismaininta kuitenkin Pyramids ja Lost sen jälkeen

I do like the more soul-oriented songs. There was also a lot of crap found on this album.

Wasn't terrible, but I did not enjoy

Track 2 - thinkin' bout you - is so awful that it made my ears bleed. Actually... Is this a parody album? This opens out into almost pastiche R&B. It's like Sexual Chocolate for the 2010s. The "not musical" interludes are grating. He dives all over the place, putting in little asides that just don't make any sense. "Crack rock" might be a highbrow critique using meta to illustrate how hard drugs just don't fit in - but no, it just doesn't fit in. There's actually quite a lot to like about this. His voice is lovely. Clearly he's thought about what he's doing. There are some lovely refrains. And some of the lyricism is quite nice. Maybe it can win me over, but I'm half way through it now and I'm not liking its odds. Nope. Showboating indulgence. Had he gone for a more restrained, nuanced approach without the over-the-top attempts to be new, different and away from the mainstream then the pastiche R&B might actually have worked. But it swings three times and the poor bugger only gets the walk.

Good tunes, ridiculous lyrics

I'm mostly rock/metal fan, but I was enjoying this album until Pyramids came along and dragged on for far too long. Listening to the rest of the album seemed like a chore after that.

Frank Ocean frustrates me. Sure he has a great voice with a knack for melody and expressiveness, but he also seems to have an allergy to rhyming and flow and catchyness in his lyrics. Hence I find his songs challenging to enjoy fully. It's either labored listening, or background listening for me. "White" and "Pink Matter" are the stand-outs.

NotNot really my cup of tea but I did enjoy a couple of the songs. really my cup of tea but I did enjoy a couple of the songs.

Not my kind of music. I could listen to it. But I really don't know how it become one of 1001 albums ...

I don’t like a majority of r&b albums. They all sound the same to me. This is no exception. All the songs sound the same, and I’m just not a fan of his voice. That’s a problem since the songs are pretty minimalistic and the focus really is just on the vocals. A nice short surprise by Andre 3000 in there, but otherwise, I struggled to get through it. Also, I hate skit tracks or skits to open songs and there were a few of those in here.

His voice is pleasant enough, and the beats are pretty chill. But this album is sounds like one long 60 minute song.

Just not into this kinda music

Slick production. The samples between the tracks was irritating. Didn't make it through until the end. The pyramid thing did my nut in. Had a little Frank Turner confusion.

Listened on RS500. Left me cold.

He’s singing about stuff I can’t relate to in a style I can’t understand. Some pretty good turns of phrases every now and then brings this up a star but still not my thing.

Worst album I have heard on this list so far. Definitely not my style, I couldn't get into any song, although I can sense the appeal other people may have to this album.

It's ok, not really my thing. 2 stars.

Okay as background music, I guess, but there was nothing really memorable on this album.

Constant weird interruptions ruined this. Not that taken with the style either.

A couple of good songs, but for the most part was too long. Just not my style.

I didn’t know what to expect going in and I liked a few of the songs.

Dumb lyrics and overuse of audio processing tools, standard 2010's soul less R&B.

Just no. It’s boring, his voice is super annoying, and it’s just so bland and forgettable. It’s not offensive, but it is not good, either.

Am I missing a backstory? I’m not sure why this has made it on the list. A mix of pop/soul and high school musical/Riverdale. Doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s not unbearable however.

Volledig langs mee heen gegaan. Het album stond op en daarna kabbelde het voort

Hij kan een leuk deuntje zingen, maar: not impressed.

This album was simply hard to get through. Some moments of briliance, some decent song, but overall the prevalence of songs so bland and uninspired getting trough it all is a chore.

More like Frank Puddle Would give 3 stars if vocal was non-existent I wish I didn't hear the lyrics, my life was changed forever Highlight: Pyramids, was pretty sophisticated, stood out from the rest of tracks

A komu to potrzebne?

Szczerze spodziewałem się, że albo znienawidzę go, albo go pokocham.

Okay R&B but not something I'd consider to be one of the greatest 1001 albums of all time. Really wanted this album to be over quicker than it was. Nothing stood out and nothing grabbed my attention. Guy's got a good voice, but sounded bored through most of the songs.

I thought the album was okay. It was easy to listen to, and had a nice kind of smooth groove to it, but ultimately I was just kind of bored, so I guess it wasn't really for me. Pyramids was a super standout track though; it caught my attention unlike anything else on this album. This album is definitely more than a 2, but less than 3 for me.

Eh. Don't get what the fuss was about.

the jazzy bits saved it from 1 stars.

Wasn’t really for me, but there were a couple of nice songs on there. 4/10

It's nice. Not what I usually listen to, but enjoyable. 2/5

I know there was a lot of hype about this one when it was released but it’s just not for me, nothing there that made me think “what a tune” so two stars for me.

Really didnt know what to make of this one, a couple songs were really good and the rest just sounded all the same!!!

Good voice. Not my thing.

By all accounts I should love this but I've just never got on with it. Bit like The Weeknd

I could gladly die without ever having heard this album and just another example of why auto-tune is destroying music.

I've tried so hard to appreciate Frank's music since he's so beloved but I just don't get the appeal. It's... fine. Just doesn't really do much for me.

Listened Before: N Modern R&B... Meh. Pros: Loved "Super Rich Kids". I like some of the music here. Nothing too difficult to listen to, it's just not really my thing. Cons: Again, not my thing. Too much "talking" over the music.. and a lot of the samples seem unnecessary or out of place. Also, why is Pyramids 10 minutes long? Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Super Rich Kids

I get it, this project is based on a progression of books highlighting how clever the neck-beard and basement-dwelling rock critics are with going deep-catalog and obtuse. From my perspective I'd hope to find stand-out records from intriguing artists as a way to lure me in to further crate diving. In this case "Channel Orange" comes across as lazy, dull and amateur compared to "Blonde" - I would probably be dissuaded from looking any further into Frank Ocean. I don't know if Blonde is on this list (I'd give it a 4 for being haunting - lyrically/thematically intriguing) but this one gets a flat 2. I resent it being included in the 1001.

I liked the sounds of the music more than the lyrics/singing. I appreciated the singing more than usual rapping that goes with this genre, but the vocal melodies were not particularly imaginative. One takeaway was that I have not known many extremely wealthy people nor drug-addicted people in my life. #sheltered

I don’t get it. It has critical acclaim but I don’t think that vocal warbling over no melody and someone’s synthesizer and drum kit is entertaining to listen to. There are a couple of songs that hold together, but 80% of this is pretty painful.

Something i have not heard from an artist i havent heard of. It wasnt bad, i didnt really skip around. It didnt grab me either. I dont know how to rate, 2. no hits for me

I liked some elements, but they or the songs tended to go on longer than my interest held. But I really enjoyed the first part of Pyramids and one song that could have been longer was Fertilizer :)

Not my cup of tea

pitchfork wet dreams. they absoluetly bum this album. this is the 3rd time i've tried to listen to this album and its still just an r'n'b album albeit alternative style. the best bit was hearing the original playstation power up sounds on the first track. also john is the shittest beatle.

Decent but not my kinda thing
