Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Good bit of variety, still coherent. If the region in your brain that enjoys pop music works I bet this is nice. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
So this is Frank Ocean eh? Pleasant, I suppose, but in a neutral way.
I've been forcibly removed from the millennial generation by standing on the hill that Frank Ocean and this album are both terribly, terribly overrated
2/5 serviceable R&B.
Propsit ps1 startupista
Like a really boring version of the weeknd
I've tried a few times to get into Frank Ocean's music a few times. While I do enjoy some of it, I just am not liking as much as I hope I would. Couple of fantastic songs on here I keep on repeat, but I could do without a huge majority
2/5
Orange you glad you only had to listen to this just once all the way through?
This didn’t really do much for me. I thought it was quite forgettable (especially considering the only thing I remember is the line about running out of Trojans in Sierra Leone and that was more comical for me). Do you remember that Dana Carvey skit where he talks about rock stars just looking around and making up words as they go? Choppin’ broccoli! This felt a lot like that.
I’ve listened to more Hip Hop in the 100+ days of this project, than in the whole of my life previously. And I’m still not a fan. This is not really bad, though. The soul aspect helps along. And the beats are more shuffling than pounding. But still too much fixed beat, too much mostly spoken vocals, not enough melody. Too much auto tune (anything more than none is too much). But there is some sense of these being actual songs, and that’s good. I was feeling generous, was going to give a three, but the longer it went, the more I lost interest. I found myself checking “how much more” when it was just past 1/2 through… too often. By the time I was about 75% through, I was down to a 2. Sorry, just too much. 2/5
Heard good things about Frank Ocean but unfortunately this is the first and last time that I will listen to this album.
I liked it better than I expected but I had really low expectations from brief previous encounters. Won’t be going into my rotation but I can see how it would be important within its genre.
why?
Too repetitive in lyrics
Some ok stuff, but not really my thing
Incredibly overrated.
This is a realy unconventional Album, and I really don't like it. Why are there 3 tracks under a minute? It just seems to slow the album down and make it disjointed. I could possibly forgive the first one at the start of the album, Because I can see what he's trying to do and I didn't mind the nostalgia hit. However the other two are just annoying and pointless. Then he goes and puts a track that on here that just under 10 minutes, MAKE YOUR MIND UP!!!!!. I have said it before, any song that is over 5 minutes needs to be something special and unfortunately pyramids isn't that. I would rather climb a pyramid than have to listen to that song again. Also don't like particularly hearing the N word in songs, most of the time there is no need for it. Also there are bits of talking in the songs that just don't work for me. I feel like this has been a pretty negative review so I will end on a positive I like how the first track is called start, and the last track is called end.
Is it just me or does modern R&B seem insincere, like they don’t mean what they are signing about. They’ve got the technique down but it’s missing passion and soul. 1.71
Not my cup of tee, feels artificial with the singing
Modern soul that at times moves dangerously close to Hip Hop. 2/5
Maybe it just wasn’t for me? Once I started thinking of the old Vine, I was too distracted to care. That, and if I’m going to listen to this style of music, I’m going to just go with Childish Gambino, or Kendrick Lamar. I’m not sure if I’ve ever listened to frank ocean before today, but I probably won’t come back to it, unless made to.
It was definitely an album that was meant to be listened to completely as no song stuck out. His speaking rapping and singing voices are all so different. He’s talented but this didn’t grab me.
Listened to this last year and wasn't blown away. Pyramids was a good song from memory but not one I'm rushing back to.
I give this album two stars because I can enjoy the content of the album in small doses. I am very impressed with Frank Ocean’s creative integration of many sound elements, and he has an extremely versatile voice. However, for the arrangements and production of the songs on this album, which are so heavily dominated by the drum tracks, a little bit goes a long way for me.
...
Some catchy stuff I supposed. I didn't hate it but I did not like it.
I've never been a fan, don't get the hype and am sure I've listened this once and never thought of it again
I can't find any merit in this. I know people rave over Frank Ocean and I've tried his albums before, but on a concentrated listen I didn't find anything that engaged me. Bland and boring.
Some of the music was good. Just could not get into it.
Chilled, but not super interesting. Did not get why this is on the list. Maybe the lyrics? Cannot really tell...
Some songs were nice, some were just noises and 29 seconds long. Not great tbh.
really meh
Not for me.
Meh. Low energy lounge singer vibes. Not really my thing.
When this album came out, I thought it was extremely overrated simply because I wanted to cut against the grain on all things pop music back then, and admittedly spent very little time with it at all. Let's see how that opinion aged. Uhh, significantly better than I expected? Pyramids is basically the only song that maintained my interest the entire time.
I’m glad I had the chance to give this album another listen. I had tried it when it came out thanks to the critical noise it was getting. But it wasn’t for me then. And, uh, it’s not really for me now either. But I can see why people who appreciate modern R&B would like it. Good for what it is, but not especially a kind of music I spend time listening to. 2.5/5 for me.
Did Start feature the old PS startup sound? The interstitials (?) between some songs are strange. I dig some of the sounds, but overall kind of meh for me. 2* because I didn't totally hate it. Enjoyed: Sweet Life
Hooray a debut album from a popular artist I know nothing about (Album 30/10001). Feel like this is something I'd hear in a hair salon or something. It's not my vibe. It has a ton of streams on Spotify, maybe I'm missing something. I'm bored, I'm hoping the back half is more entertaining. It's like emo r&b.. -- I wish it were funkier. Some of the best parts are the skits. Review of Reviews: People either really like this or are scathing considering it part of the "denigration of society." .. what a boomer thing to say. lol. Best Track: Fertilizer..
pretty mediocre
This album did pretty much nothing for me. His singing and songs have no energy. The songwriting is formulaic. The word that sums it up is meh. Songs that were ok: Sweet Life (sounds like Stevie Wonder), Crack Rock, Pyramids (I actually liked this one), Pink Matter (liked Andre 3000 on it, but the lyrics are cringe).
R&B+Hip Hop touches with mumbled Rap in falsetto and tenor. Not a fan.
Pretty chill at times
Maybe because I didn’t particularly pay attention to the lyrics I didn’t get the best office but really just didn’t vibe with it too much.
eh not my type, kinda just sound scapey
# 100 : a bit lame for my 100th album, but there you go. ok music, but not my style, I tolerated it but I wont go back to it. it is drawn out and samey. Favourite Track : Sweet Life Listened: 01/11/2023
Some tones like Prince but way to much synthesized and dubbed for actual enjoyment.
I believe that Super Rich Kids can be taken as a microcosm of Channel Orange. The music is laid-back, but there's a steely underneath. Ocean's singing is sweet, but weathered. There's an interesting kernel, but it is stretched out too far. The lyrics, I'm not sure there's anything all that perceptive here. Sure, it's better than Drake, but so what? On the song, Earl Sweatshirt steals the show with his delivery, his rhymes, his tonal inflections. And therein lies my confusion. Surely, by featuring, Sweatshirt is indicating his respect and admiration for Ocean. What for?
Not bad considering it's not really my favourite genre. Though I was waiting for it to finish by the end.
Not my style…
OK. Not for me
Enjoyed most of the backing tracks. Not a fan of rap/pop, so album got tiring quickly
Funky, chill. Maybe suitable as background music on very quiet, when you're trying to relax. I wouldn't listen to this otherwise.
Admirable for its abstract, challenging soundscapes. Not so much for its abstract, challenging melodies, which meander, unmoored from any foundation, refusing to resolve. The lyrics are unconventional, poetic, with perfectly timed stop-you-in-your-tracks lines.
I don't get the hype. 2/5
Solid album, but not one I would play regularly
This album meant like nothing to me, i just didn't like it that much
Not my thing
Not for me, but I see why people like it. Very relaxing, almost lo-fi.
Meh. This is not my jam.
urgh...
Not my jam.
Too r&b on the vocals for me
Not my favorite
NIce laid back atmosphere, but also boring
Meh. I found it pretty dull.
So cozy and sweet. This album reminds me of NaissanceE, a really good video game. Same open and airy aura, a grand illusion of vastness. Pretty chill.
Not a big fan, sorry Mr Ocean
Always found Frank massively overrated even before the Coachella nonsense. Decent but unimpressive soul music that goes through one ear and out the other. D
Didn’t like any of the songs
not for me.
When this first started, I was kind of excited. I didn't expect it to sound like that at all, it has a nice sound to it overall. The lyrics really lost me.
Unmemorable
Its not bad just boring as fuck
I liked "Pyramids" and some other songs here and there. But otherwise not my type of music. Very american, it tries really hard to convince you it's coooool, but effortlessly.
ouagadougou type mfer... Ocean wanted to approach sound and song structure differently on the album. ensinnäkin, miten vitussa valtameri pystyy tollasia tekemään heh...toiseksi, mitä vittua blud vohveloi... tosi hyvä albumi, 2 tähteä. joku sanoi että Not a fan of the language. jos tarkoittaa englantia niin samaa mieltä.. pyramids
black cleopatra song was topical but other than that it was run of the mill
Let me start off with the good. Love the album name and cover. Mom's favorite color was orange. Miss you, momma. After listening to Aretha, then reading about this album, thinking another R&B day, I was excited. I say quite a bit, I love me that R&B. Then I listened..... Excuse me while I go on a boomer rant. What the hell happened to modern day R&B and rap? I can't think of anything since the end of the 90's that actually make you feel the music, groove in your seat and can't wait to get home and grab your girl or boy or whoever you spend the day thinking about and love them up. This guy tried, but lyrically, just a big meh. Just doesn't get there. Have to say I was really disappointed here. At the end of Pink Matter, I heard motherphuggen this, motherphuggen that and then get to song called Forrest Gump. In a perfect world, he followed up Pink Matter with a song called Diehard and used the line Yippee Ky A motherphucker. I guess it wouldn't help the album, but it would have made this guy smile. I really wanted to like this. I didn't. I'm going to score a 2, but just because I loved the album cover and I thought of Diehard. And his voice was decent. 2 His voice was fine and I even liked the first song, Thinking About You. That was about it for me.
2.5 Oh, Frank Ocean - back when he was still a hero to us, before having a career just long enough to become the villain. I’m familiar with some of his stuff, though this is my first time giving him a full album listen… and unfortunately I just don’t feel that anything was gained from it. His musical style involving a fusion of pop, R&B, and jazz is something that I feel should be iconic and enjoyable on paper, especially in relation to a lot of his pop contemporaries, yet nothing about it really jumps out to me, including the vocals, which, yeah, sound good, but really feel far from the more standout or unique performances I’ve heard. Overall, the songs here do just sufficient enough of a job to at least stand out to me from a lot of other 2010s pop, but not quite to a point where I feel the desire to go back and give another listen. My favorite part wasn’t even really a song - it was hearing the Playstation startup noise at the beginning. It’s such a cool sound effect and super nostalgic, so I thought I was in for an exciting listen with that at the head - I was wrong. However, the inexcusably worst part for me? Somehow it makes André 3000 feel kind of mediocre - not even sure how one does that. It’s like a bowl of vanilla ice cream - not particularly exciting or my preferred, but I wouldn’t complain about having it served to me. I really, really want to like this guy because I know he’s considered a modern musical legend, but for the most part, everything I’ve heard just lacks a certain hook to really pull me in. I do admittedly enjoy the song Ivy on his follow-up album Blonde though, so I’m willing to give more of his stuff a chance to see what all of the hype is about. This could maybe be a 3 on a good day, but for now I’m airing towards a 2.5. Anyway, album and Coachelle fiasco aside, I do want to say I have respect for him for his advocacy of gay and trans rights - Happy Pride everyone!
I don't linke it much
Nah
Alright but the sole existence of Not just money pulls this down a star. Like the first few but it got worst. Doesn’t help I’m not a rap fan but some songs are still definitely a 5 star
There is pretty much nothing interesting in this album
2. There's just something so boring about this. Like, I can't even hate on it, it's giving absolutely nothing.
This isn't my genre and it didn't pull me in.
Melodic enough, but not really for me
It has its moments
There are much better R&B options out there.
I don't like it. My wife says "no, you don't like R&B". Either way there is one thing that I do know; I don't like Frank Ocean.
Not for me, this, I don't understand the acclaim. It's not impressive in terms of overall sound, he's not a great lyricist not is there anything special going on there with structure or rhyme, the beats aren't memorable, he can't sing (plus there's some autotune guff and I hate all of that, it comes across like a stream of consciousness he's put on record rather than doing something coherent, and it's no better than lots of R&B from 10 and 20 years earlier.
Very disjointed and struggles to keep me engaged.
I can see the appeal of this album to some, but it is not for me.
He has the heart for it, I just don't really go for it myself
Initial thoughts; interesting sound affects. As soon as he starts singing all autotune nonsense. Then the tunes don't really "go" anywhere. some ok background beats I guess but overall dull and repetitive. 1.5
A.A.D. city' gekozen.
Yeah nah, this is not my jam. I did not look forward to a second listen but I perservered and my faves would be Pyramids and Bad Religion.
Nah not for me
I do like the more soul-oriented songs. There was also a lot of crap found on this album.
Wasn't terrible, but I did not enjoy
Meh
Track 2 - thinkin' bout you - is so awful that it made my ears bleed. Actually... Is this a parody album? This opens out into almost pastiche R&B. It's like Sexual Chocolate for the 2010s. The "not musical" interludes are grating. He dives all over the place, putting in little asides that just don't make any sense. "Crack rock" might be a highbrow critique using meta to illustrate how hard drugs just don't fit in - but no, it just doesn't fit in. There's actually quite a lot to like about this. His voice is lovely. Clearly he's thought about what he's doing. There are some lovely refrains. And some of the lyricism is quite nice. Maybe it can win me over, but I'm half way through it now and I'm not liking its odds. Nope. Showboating indulgence. Had he gone for a more restrained, nuanced approach without the over-the-top attempts to be new, different and away from the mainstream then the pastiche R&B might actually have worked. But it swings three times and the poor bugger only gets the walk.
Good tunes, ridiculous lyrics
I'm mostly rock/metal fan, but I was enjoying this album until Pyramids came along and dragged on for far too long. Listening to the rest of the album seemed like a chore after that.
Frank Ocean frustrates me. Sure he has a great voice with a knack for melody and expressiveness, but he also seems to have an allergy to rhyming and flow and catchyness in his lyrics. Hence I find his songs challenging to enjoy fully. It's either labored listening, or background listening for me. "White" and "Pink Matter" are the stand-outs.
NotNot really my cup of tea but I did enjoy a couple of the songs. really my cup of tea but I did enjoy a couple of the songs.
Not my kind of music. I could listen to it. But I really don't know how it become one of 1001 albums ...
I don’t like a majority of r&b albums. They all sound the same to me. This is no exception. All the songs sound the same, and I’m just not a fan of his voice. That’s a problem since the songs are pretty minimalistic and the focus really is just on the vocals. A nice short surprise by Andre 3000 in there, but otherwise, I struggled to get through it. Also, I hate skit tracks or skits to open songs and there were a few of those in here.
His voice is pleasant enough, and the beats are pretty chill. But this album is sounds like one long 60 minute song.
Just not into this kinda music
Slick production. The samples between the tracks was irritating. Didn't make it through until the end. The pyramid thing did my nut in. Had a little Frank Turner confusion.
Listened on RS500. Left me cold.
He’s singing about stuff I can’t relate to in a style I can’t understand. Some pretty good turns of phrases every now and then brings this up a star but still not my thing.
Worst album I have heard on this list so far. Definitely not my style, I couldn't get into any song, although I can sense the appeal other people may have to this album.
It's ok, not really my thing. 2 stars.
Okay as background music, I guess, but there was nothing really memorable on this album.
Constant weird interruptions ruined this. Not that taken with the style either.
A couple of good songs, but for the most part was too long. Just not my style.
I didn’t know what to expect going in and I liked a few of the songs.
Dumb lyrics and overuse of audio processing tools, standard 2010's soul less R&B.
Just no. It’s boring, his voice is super annoying, and it’s just so bland and forgettable. It’s not offensive, but it is not good, either.
Am I missing a backstory? I’m not sure why this has made it on the list. A mix of pop/soul and high school musical/Riverdale. Doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s not unbearable however.
Volledig langs mee heen gegaan.
This album was simply hard to get through. Some moments of briliance, some decent song, but overall the prevalence of songs so bland and uninspired getting trough it all is a chore.
More like Frank Puddle Would give 3 stars if vocal was non-existent I wish I didn't hear the lyrics, my life was changed forever Highlight: Pyramids, was pretty sophisticated, stood out from the rest of tracks
A komu to potrzebne?
Szczerze spodziewałem się, że albo znienawidzę go, albo go pokocham.
Okay R&B but not something I'd consider to be one of the greatest 1001 albums of all time. Really wanted this album to be over quicker than it was. Nothing stood out and nothing grabbed my attention. Guy's got a good voice, but sounded bored through most of the songs.
I thought the album was okay. It was easy to listen to, and had a nice kind of smooth groove to it, but ultimately I was just kind of bored, so I guess it wasn't really for me. Pyramids was a super standout track though; it caught my attention unlike anything else on this album. This album is definitely more than a 2, but less than 3 for me.
Eh. Don't get what the fuss was about.
the jazzy bits saved it from 1 stars.
Wasn’t really for me, but there were a couple of nice songs on there. 4/10
It's nice. Not what I usually listen to, but enjoyable. 2/5
I know there was a lot of hype about this one when it was released but it’s just not for me, nothing there that made me think “what a tune” so two stars for me.
Really didnt know what to make of this one, a couple songs were really good and the rest just sounded all the same!!!
Good voice. Not my thing.
By all accounts I should love this but I've just never got on with it. Bit like The Weeknd
I could gladly die without ever having heard this album and just another example of why auto-tune is destroying music.
I've tried so hard to appreciate Frank's music since he's so beloved but I just don't get the appeal. It's... fine. Just doesn't really do much for me.
Listened Before: N Modern R&B... Meh. Pros: Loved "Super Rich Kids". I like some of the music here. Nothing too difficult to listen to, it's just not really my thing. Cons: Again, not my thing. Too much "talking" over the music.. and a lot of the samples seem unnecessary or out of place. Also, why is Pyramids 10 minutes long? Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Super Rich Kids
Meh
I get it, this project is based on a progression of books highlighting how clever the neck-beard and basement-dwelling rock critics are with going deep-catalog and obtuse. From my perspective I'd hope to find stand-out records from intriguing artists as a way to lure me in to further crate diving. In this case "Channel Orange" comes across as lazy, dull and amateur compared to "Blonde" - I would probably be dissuaded from looking any further into Frank Ocean. I don't know if Blonde is on this list (I'd give it a 4 for being haunting - lyrically/thematically intriguing) but this one gets a flat 2. I resent it being included in the 1001.
I liked the sounds of the music more than the lyrics/singing. I appreciated the singing more than usual rapping that goes with this genre, but the vocal melodies were not particularly imaginative. One takeaway was that I have not known many extremely wealthy people nor drug-addicted people in my life. #sheltered
I don’t get it. It has critical acclaim but I don’t think that vocal warbling over no melody and someone’s synthesizer and drum kit is entertaining to listen to. There are a couple of songs that hold together, but 80% of this is pretty painful.
Something i have not heard from an artist i havent heard of. It wasnt bad, i didnt really skip around. It didnt grab me either. I dont know how to rate, 2. no hits for me
I liked some elements, but they or the songs tended to go on longer than my interest held. But I really enjoyed the first part of Pyramids and one song that could have been longer was Fertilizer :)
Not my cup of tea
pitchfork wet dreams. they absoluetly bum this album. this is the 3rd time i've tried to listen to this album and its still just an r'n'b album albeit alternative style. the best bit was hearing the original playstation power up sounds on the first track. also john is the shittest beatle.
Decent but not my kinda thing
Great voice, not my thing though from a point of view of the music. The production is great, mind
Few liked songs
I liked the sound but it was like someone couldn't commit to writing a complete song. Just dropped / ended too soon....
Rap
I wanted to like this album but the themes really didn't work for me
Honestly not really sure! My gut is to say I didn't really like the album, but I kind of liked the vibes of the music I guess. The lyrics were just a bit too weird for me maybe? Pink Matter was my favourite song.
What is this even? Not good in any case. Mostly it was bad and boring but unintrusive. I had to skip Super Rich Kids and then stopped altogether after a bit over half the album.
A bit smooth, can't quite see through it but will have a deeper listen
The single was really the only redeemable part of the album.
naja, wieder nicht mein Genre
Not bad but not really my style.
Weird. A couple of decent tracks, lots of rubbish, strange mix of styles.
Started well but overall it's just not for me at all.
Not for me. Tedious to sit through.
Not a style of music I generally enjoy, but this was ok. 2/5 nearly a 3.
Overrated
Sounds ok, but not for me
I really like r&b but this doesn't do it for me
I enjoyed his voice at time, and also the instrumentation -- at times. The style is not my thing, and I was mostly uninterested
Not my kind of music
i'd call it sex music
Guy sounded like he needed to get laid or just got laid for the first time. Majority of songs were about pussy. Decent mixes I guess.
idk if it really deserved to be on this list compared to it's contemporaries
one or two goodies, not a huge fan
Vaisu
I know this was an important album and Ocean is very talented....I've just never likes the auto-tune vocal thing.
I'm sorry, but this is not an album I needed to hear before I die
Awful
Don't like this wanna be.
The second song summed it up, fertiliser! Whiney drivel, it's not even music.
I've made a new discovery here. I didn't realize until now that pop music could be so boring and annoying at the same time. Until now, I'd only known it to be either boring or annoying. 1/5
This is #day680 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… I don't quite understand the level of acclaim and the record's place on the list. Hearing pretentiously experimental contemporary R&B with this kind of vocal style before you die doesn't seem like a good idea. Too much fuss about nothing in particular. I'd rather revisit Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye. This is a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day681.
Almost didn’t like it at all
Not for me, too Samey and bland.monotonous drivel
Not gonna lie. I saw today’s artist quickly and although my eyes read Frank Ocean, I immediately thought of Billy Ocean. I was excited that I was in store for a day of R&B hits like Caribbean Queen. You can imagine my disappointment when FRANK Ocean began singing shortly after and songs like “Crack Rock” and “Forrest Gump” filled my afternoon. I may have enjoyed the album slightly more had I not slipped up so badly, but there was no coming back from that. And with lyrics like those found in “Lost”, “Monks”, and “Pink Matter” my disappointment only grew deeper. This is bad music and it doesn’t belong on this list of 1001.
Really struggling with this one. Kinda sleezy. Well received but not for me
yeah I’m not finishing this
Very gay and not good.
Al final una gran verga. Nada que me haya llamado la atención.
03/05/2026 I've never listened to this guy before and I really don't want to again. This was shite. So boring, the guy just mumbles. I couldn't wait for it to be over. I hope there is no more music on this list quite like this. Spotify listeners: 40.3 million
Stupid.
Shite
Turra infinita. Empieza en un 3 y a cada tema que pasa va a peor. Digno de ser prohibido.
Man… this album is straight-up shit. Horse shit, dog shit, elephant shit — whatever kind of shit you want to call it, it’s all of them. While listening I felt bored, annoyed, and honestly disappointed the whole time. The songs are slow, meandering, and half-finished in that fake “artsy” way. The production tries to sound deep and atmospheric but mostly just comes off as empty and pretentious. Frank’s voice is fine, but the melodies are weak and the whole thing drags like crazy. It feels like everyone told him he’s a genius so he stopped trying to actually write good songs. There’s no energy, no real hooks, and barely any moments that make you want to replay anything. People act like this is some masterpiece of modern R&B, but to me it’s just boring, overlong, and massively overrated. Zero replay value. I suffered through it once and that was more than enough. Hard avoid.
Boring and mid
Very disappointing.
His debut album. Pop / R n B. This was a rough fifty five mins.
Boring... boring... unbearably boring
Really not for me. Only liked two of the songs. He has a good voice though.
Can’t believe I actually listened to all of that. Terrible!
Nothing of any interest, very dull.
The latest ghastly incarnation of smooth R&B, it’s evolving! I will always detest this genre, it all just feels so cold and leaves me feeling anxious.
I've heard the name Frank Ocean but don't know if I've ever heard any songs by him. I have zero expectations - good or bad - for this going in. 1st time through - Uh oh - not a good start. I literally fell asleep listening to this. Also, I didn't recognize any of these songs. Since it was so popular, I thought maybe I would recognize something just from existing in the world. 2nd time through - this didn't get better and didn't connect with me at all. What is it that is supposed to make this be so good? I really don't understand. This guy actually seems super bored recording this most of the time. Some of the songs seem like he could be more enthusiastic about the material but is purposely trying not to get too into it. If you told me he recorded this while in a hospital bed loaded up with pain meds right before he died I would believe it - AND that would make a much more interesting back story. I guess I just don't understand this style. Also the instrumental song ("White") where he brought John Mayer in to play guitar also seems like he told John "Please don't do anything exciting at all". 3rd time through - only songs that seem to have anything resembling emotion or interest to it was "Sweet Life" and "Fertilizer" - but I don't really need to hear those again. "Fertilizer" in particular seemed to have a good groove but ended at 39 seconds just when it started to get going. Reading the Wikipedia article, I was excited to listen to this since it's supposedly a mashup of so many different styles. If that's true it seems like they must have taken the most boring parts of every style. I also seriously do not understand how it took so many people to make this and produce this and engineer this. I counted 25 musicians and 30 people doing production/engineering. What are all of those people actually doing??? I wonder if it's like a committee of people that collectively remove anything interesting or exciting about the music - where you end up with the most bland thing ever. I read the lyrics thinking there was maybe something that would be interesting there - not really. Recommendation -> if you are suffering from insomnia I highly recommend putting this album on repeat when you are going to bed. Liked songs on Spotify: 0/17 Rating: 1/5 (should be zero)
Good sound. I like the instrumentals a lot. But the lyrics are just not it for me. I’d jam to the instrumentals though, which I find fire. Some of the tracks at the beginning and at the end are a bit boring and void. It feels like the whole album exists to make one or two main tracks shine. It’s not bad. But it could have been better if he had put more care in each track.
I do not like Frank Ocean. I almost hate him. pilot Jones was almost acceptable, 'till it actually started... Maybe it's just this specific album... I hope it is, if not, what is wrong with the world??? How does this guy have a career? Anyways, my ears hurt now... Pink Matter is the first song I am kind of vibing to. I have never been so glad that something is done!!!
I was pretty excited when the first track had the PlayStation start up sound but then the album started. I don’t think I’ve missed much by skipping almost all pop music since 2010
Commercial R&B really isn't my thing, so i recognise that this is largely a me problem, but this was impossible to sit through. I'd almost put a "did not listen" on it, as the skip button was very heavily used.
Took me 2 weeks to get through this. It’s not bad, it’s just dull. Boring.
Nope
I have not heard this one before. I listened to a few Frank Ocean songs around the time this came out when some of my friends were talking him up and i was unimpressed, so it’s time for a reassessment. The first thing i notice is that a lot of the tracks on this album seem half thought out, like he was figuring out the song as he was singing it and then stopped right before he was getting it. There are several ok songs and a lot of songs where he just didn’t feel like adding much of a beat or a melody. I feel like i was being pranked. I just don’t get it, this is not for me.
Soul, 47 eme album =>1/5. Trop long, trop répétitif. Arrêt en cours de route.
Not for me
It really had that "2010 pop song vibe"... I hate those.
Dislike the lyrics revolving around status and women.
I found this album to be pretty crap and although I shouldn't use someone else's review, but I couldn't have said it better myself - This is the answer to the question, "What would Stevie Wonder sound like if he had no talent for singing or song writing?" - I couldn't find the authors name but it was posted 31 August 2022. Well played.
I guess I can see how he's experimenting with stuff, but I couldn't get into any of this.
Horrible singing, bland production. One of the worst things this list has thrown up so far.
Nope, not for me.
Skip. I did not like the rhythm nor lyrics.
Christ, this was a slog to get thru. His music is just not my speed. Could not listen to this album fast enough. If others like it then more power to them. I thought this was a shit album.
Just to be clear - people pay money for this stuff?
Écht niet mijn ding
not lyrically or musically good.
Really boring
Let's start here: I'm over 50. Which is to say that I acknowledge that pop music since, say 2005 at least, is not made for me. But I think of myself as pretty open minded and I enjoy a number of modern pop artists. This, though? This guy? Does Gen Z actually think this guy belongs in the same sentence as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Teddy Pendergrass, and other male R&B legends? First, his voice is bad. Yes, he can falsetto, but everything sounds so nasal and flat. Second, his songs are also bad. Oh, wait, he's written hits for other people? Do tell! Ah, Justin Bieber, Brandy, John Legend, Alicia Keys, James Blake. A veritable murderers row of blandness. Anyway, he famously bombed so badly at Coachella that his second show was cancelled. So he can't perform live, can't write, can't sing. But he's totally better than Stevie!
64/1088 1.4429* Tough to get through but now I know we're they come up with the ridiculous SNL skits. This was brutal, would not recommend and makes me look forward to Throbbing Gristle.
This is not a 1 because it’s bad, but because it isn’t anything. Why is this included on this list? No part of this stuck out to me for any reason. This was my first time hearing frank and I’ve only ever heard one person mention him before. I somehow wasn’t exposed to any hype or promotion and I can see why, there’s just nothing about this album. There was a couple of times where I forgot there was music on. Is that what’s about this? Is this what you put on when you want music to be playing but don’t want to hear anything?
Totally overrated.
Something made me feel that I had heard Frank Ocean's name in the past. Seeing this was a 2012 release and featured a handful of other popular artists I figured I would at least have some passing familiarity with it. Surprisingly this was all new to me and although some of it wasn't bad, I'm not sure any of it was good either. Not sure why this album is so highly reviewed and garnered a bunch of Grammy nominations. There's some mildly creative use of sampling during the interludes but the main meat of the album seemed like a lot of run-of-the-mill R&B tracks to me. Mostly slowish soul tracks with simple themes, limited hooks and a bunch of juvenile bullshit fake sexy lyrics. These are fine for the first couple tracks but as this album continues it gets more and more annoying. Even standalone none of these songs are anything I'm going to put on in my free time. Bold move to start an album with the original PlayStation start-up sound. Wish this hadn't been my favorite part of the album as it really was steadily downhill after the opening 30 seconds. Just because you sing about tits and add a couple of dated pop culture references into an R&B album doesn't make it interesting. The reality is there wasn't anything else that stood out for me from Channel Orange when it wrapped. This was pretty much a miss for me and Frank Ocean is an artist that looks like will get shelved moving forward. 1.42 stars
0 songs added to my favorites. Would not listen again.
This is bad.

This one was not for me
Average in my eye at best. One of those albums I mumble to myself- “ is this really in the 1001 list??!”
Very disjointed and surprisingly ordinary album. Can see the genre should be represented but there must be something better than this. If was an outstanding album that year what a poor year.
Nope. Not for me.
Unpoetic nothingness, 1st listen 1/5 stars. Will never want to hear these songs for enjoyment.
This was a rough listen. There isn’t a single track here I’d ever willingly play again. The music feels like a half-hearted, low-budget knockoff of R&B, and the lyrics somehow manage to be even weaker. At points it sounded like he was freestyling nonsense straight into the microphone.
Shoulda been lost at sea.
👎🏻
Finding very little to compliment here. It keeps sliding back and forth from boring to annoying. Not really into the overt digital production.
Why are the bad albums so long? Maybe this isn’t awful. But I sure don’t like it.
no idea what's going on
More muzak.
I barely give a shit about this genre of music
Terrible
Once again these background music albums.
Modern r'n'b is rubbish. Plays to me like limp hip hop and pop.
Not my thing at all. Lasted 3 songs
I don't think whoever wrote his Spotify biography knows what the words 'visionary', 'celebrated' and 'critically acclaimed' mean, unless he's some USA phenomena that should firmly stay there. Every single song sounds the same. They're all really slow songs with meh lyrics and boring lowkey instrumentals.
Bro uses whole album to complain... jezus man.
I would rather be listening to Billy Ocean. Additional note, this is the second album in a row that features a song from GTA V. So apparently the guy who made this list has played a ton of GTA. We all have and that is fine. But just because a song makes it onto a video game doesn't mean we have to hear the full album.
This doesn’t speak to me, but it wasn’t made for a 40-something guy, so I’m not surprised
I heard so much about this at the time. After listening to it I'm not sure what all the fuss was about. I've listened to it once, I won't again, not for me.
AIDS cRap
In what mood do you actually listen to this it's bland nothing clever about it. Maybe my opinion will change as I listen to it. Okay 'Sweet Life' is good. But does lack lyrical excellence. That goes for the whole album. Awful nothing good about this except the album cover. Like is Blonde the same too bored after this to actually find out.
Wikipedia says "Noted by writers as musically unconventional, Channel Orange draws on electro-funk, pop-soul, jazz-funk, and psychedelic styles, as well as nonmusical sounds such as film dialogue and ambient noise that function as interludes". Or to put it more simply this album is boring and pretentious crap.
Absolutely dire. In no way does this deserve a place on this list.
Not my favorite genre
nope, not for me
ugh.
Nope. Just not my thing.
What a load of rubbish. Pure dross.
Bit shit honestly.
awful, just awful.
Really not my style. Monotonous singing, boring beats and lyrics which completely lack substance . I guess the best I can say is that it was not actively offensive to my ears? But I found myself constantly wanting to turn it off, so hard to give it more than a 1.
Unimpressed. This is what music has turned into after centuries?
"Wow... once again i'm surprised... but this time... not in a good way... lol... before i listened to this, i was already preparing to pan it good... but, i had NO IDEA how worthless this cow patty was... it has been said that this album has been compared to Brian Wilson, in that it encapsulates the experience of youth for the respective times of their work... well, then i feel very sorry for the youth of 2012, when this sorry hockey puck was released... i couldn't find one groove... or any talent on it... EVERY word sung is auto-tuned to the point of sounding robotic... making me wonder if Frank Ocean is a real person or just some AI avatar... one of the songs is called "Crack Rock", which you need to smoke a bag of to like it... "White" has John Mayer playing some random guitar on it... and he's white... i guess is the reason for the title... who knows? "Bad Religion" tells us... for the UMPTEENTH time, that religion - bad... yay... what groundbreaking stuff, huh? "Pink Matter" has Andre 3000 on it... oh my... absolutely NOTHING could save this record... and lastly, i'll mention the song "Fertilizer" which is what this album is... if these lyrics move you, or mean anything to you, you... and i... are different... ZERO stars."
When I listen to these albums, sometimes I think that I'm not the right audience for the music. That it's not really my thing. It's probably great music that people love but I just don't care for the genre. I think this is one of those occasions. I don't think it's bad, really. But I did find it a boring and samey. I suppose it's good to hear some modern R&B after getting some of the older stuff the genre has to offer before. Boring beats. Slow, plodding, meandering stuff. Nothing that excites me. It's almost like a vocal jam session. I see a lot of the reviews say that they think Ocean's vocals are awful. I don't quite agree, I think they're decent enough. I actually think he sounds a little like a Stevie Wonder lite at times (see 'Sweet Life'). 'Forrest Gump' stood out as my favourite of the bunch because it was quite an uplifting sounding track and 'Pyramid' was pretty good too (funnily enough, they sounded the least R&B on the album), but overall I didn't really enjoy the hour I spent listening. When I first started these reviews I'd have probably given it a two, but I'm trying to be "harsher" and more accurate, and I genuinely don't think I'd find any reason to ever come back to this.
1,2/5
2.5/10 I hate this
Mostly forgettable and unremarkable, with the occasional odd moment and awkward transitions. Some songs sound half-finished, mixed with randomly recorded snippets the producers didn’t know what to do with, so they left them as is. While good art is meant to provoke questions, this album just makes you go “huh?”
cure to insomnia
I like R&B — it’s a genre where I’m easy to please (I’d rank any reasonably good R&B a three, at least). I like the sound and the ethos. But this is just not good. He’s got a nice voice. That’s it — that’s the best i can say. The album is amateurish. His delivery is terrible; forcing the words into the rhythm and lazily mumbling the key words and syllables. The musical backing is simple; the best that a producer with a bunch of Mac music programmers can deliver. Many of the songs are super-repetitive— they need editing (if not complete rewriting). This is a 1. I have no idea how it made the 1001 list, and many of the individual sings are annoying.
Ei ei ei. Aivan hirveää kuraa. Top3 paskimmat tähän mennessä
Absolument terrible.
2 not my cup of tea
Maybe someone else find this grating voice and flabby songs entertaining but not me.
"Fertilizer, I'll take bullshit if that's all you got." Listened to B4? No Tracks Already Saved on Spotify: 2 - Thinkin Bout You, Lost Standout Tracks: Thinkin Bout You, Sweet Life, Lost. (33/100)
The ocean is dynamic and never dull. This guy needs to change his name to stagnant pond to match the quality of these songs.
Didn’t love it, he’s got a good voice a lot of them felt like general grooves rather than songs. Shan’t listen again.
What is this awful shit and why is it in my ears?! Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ (part) Revisit ❌️ Terrible ★☆☆☆☆ I'd do no stars if it was a thing...
1 stern
I have definitely given this a whirl back in the day when it was P4k’s best album of whatever Deeply not my thing, lots of lounge R&B stuff. Second side is 100% better, hated first few
I’ve tried a few times with this album. It’s just not for me. It’s not terrible, just not my style.
This was a tough listen for me. It feels like every song drifts aimlessly, lacking any real grit or emotion. I can’t quite pin down the genre, but whatever it is, it just doesn’t resonate. The tracks feel thin and uninspired.
Apparently Frank Ocean is the 120th most streamed artist on Spotify at the moment. Absolute dog shit. Not the worst album I've heard, but definitely a 1 starrer.
Nope I remember the hype surrounding Frank Ocean and his late night closing set at a festival about ten years ago. Was genuinely interested to see him - he was boring. Just him and a music box of some sort on stage tinkering and making random sounds. Came into this album with an older and opener mind. Came away thinking it sounds like half finished thoughts spliced into some mediocre music. Maybe listening to the new Andrew 3000 will make my day better
I really didn't think this album was that strong. I liked the general vibe and some of the synth "riffs" were definitely catchy. Not unpleasant to listen to, but nothing groundbreaking here from Frank, at least to me.
Holy fuck this is one of the worst albums I've ever heard.
This isn’t my thing. It didn’t have a point of view that connected with me. It felt bland and predictable.
Hyped modern r&b crap
