Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Very different sounding Beck. Toned-down Snow Patrol vibes. Nothing outstanding, but no duds on a chilled, decent album.

Good but way to dragged out. Would be a 4 if it was shorter

i don't really know what to think of it. i like the bits of orchestral quirkiness. spacey, vibey, sad in a good way. favorite is maybe Lost Cause. soft 3

A couple of melodic ballads are fine but an hour of them… too much.

not my type kinda right there really need a mood to love it

Standouts The Golden Age Guess I'm Doing Fine

3 / 5 Best: Paper Tiger Worst: Sunday Sun Weirdest: Sunday Sun, Little One Honorable Mentions: Guess I'm Doing Fine, Lonesome Tears, End Of The Day Very, very slow and depressing at times but nicely mixed overall. Clean guitar strumming and pretty great string instrumentation. Has a crisp autumn day feeling to it. Some neat bass lines peppered in if you can hang in there with Beck's post-breakup sadness.

It's. Just. Radiohead. Now, I still liked it. It's still very pretty with beautiful arrangements, and Beck's voice fits the music nicely. But the arrangements themselves, the chord progressions, the sound design, it's just goddamn Radiohead. This is what happens when you listen to Karma Police or Lucky or Nude or Fake Plastic Trees exclusively. When it doesn't remind me of them, it reminds me of Neil Young. So at least it's not a monolith. Only after typing that paragraph did I realize that the album was produced by Nigel Godrich, who also produced almost all of Radiohead's stuff. So I guess I can't place the blame entirely on Beck. But I still fear that the album is too derivative for me to get that much enjoyment out of it. Whenever I listened to it, I could only think about what I'd rather be listening to instead. But still, I didn't hate it. I just don't feel like I got a strong sense of what Beck is actually like. I just know where his music tastes lie.

Album #107, Sea Change, Beck ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I don’t know, man. When your high watermark is something as impressive, interesting, fun, and endlessly replayable as Odelay, I expect a bit more than fairly basic, earnest singer-songwriter stuff. I’ve looked into the history of the album, I get it. It’s a breakup album. He went in a different direction. I would never bash an artist for trying something new, but for Beck, this just feels a bit too simple for me. It’s not the kind of music that I come to him for and I don’t really see why I’d come back to this when there are other artists who I think do this style a lot better. Bill Callahan, Tindersticks, Nick Drake to name a few. It gets three stars because there are definitely some really strong songs on it, especially at the start. The Golden Age and Paper Tiger open the album really, really well. My favourite track is Around the Bend, which reminded me of my beloved Scott Walker. The strings are nice, but it can be a bit dreary. I was never big into The National and this veers too close to that. It kind of turns into background music sometimes. It’s too long as well. I will say the production is excellent. When you really tune into it, it sounds fantastic. But I just found myself losing interest as it went on. So it’s a light three for me. It’s got none of the humour of Mellow Gold, and none of the weirdness or unpredictability that makes Beck so interesting to me in the first place. It’s totally competent and well made, don’t get me wrong, but I do think this is maybe an example of an artist having too many albums on the list. He already has Odelay (a masterpiece) and Guero, which I’ve yet to hear. Surely there are other artists with albums you need to hear before you die that deserve a spot over something like this. I suspect this will be a negatively received review, but it’s my review nonetheless.

Sort of a giant slow bummer. I like my Beck playful

A bit slow for my taste. Interesting instrumentation at time.

That was much better than I thought it would be. Wish it was the one with the sweater song though.

It was the coolness of Beck, but mixed with a horrible post grunge vocal tone. I liked parts of it, but it missed the quirkiness I've enjoyed on his other albums. The back end was alright. 3 Stars

This album is like getting all excited to go out sailing on a nice sunny afternoon, only for the wind to die down fifteen minutes after you raise the mainsail. You're longing for that magical feeling of being well-headed with a stiff wind, and your friends who have come along are pumped up to see what all the fuss is about (you've been harping on about sailing for quite some time). But now here you are, sitting in the cockpit of you yacht, barely needing to hold the tiller because you aren't going anywhere. Your friends are laughing at you, but also pretty frustrated because they were expecting more. It's pretty pleasant, but not offering much.

We are in the middle of a late May heatwave and this is a great album for a hot sunny morning. It is so chilled, sea breeze would perhaps be as appropriate as Sea Change. The crescendo at the end of Lonesome Tears is almost Beatlesesque. This is Beck in full on acoustic singer songwriter mode. Generally its a really solid album with the occasional dip, yes Round the Bend, I am talking about you. Overall this is a 3.5/5 but i dont think it’s quite as strong as a 4 so 3/5

This feels like a less experimental, more stripped back version of Beck. A bit Wilco, very chilled and a lot different to Odelay which I previously loved. The backing vocals on The Golden Age reminded me of Mike Mills from R.E.M. so there's obviously bonus points for that. Adored the strings on Paper Tiger. I like the chorus of Sunday Sun a lot. Overall it is unfortunately a little too chill for my liking - I generally prefer a bit more upbeat, and while I think it's really beautiful in places, it does feel quite one-tempo. I like it, but would have preferred either a shorter album, or a bit more variety. 3/5

If you're used to older Beck, it'll be weird to hear live instrumentation here. This signaled the beginning of his artistic changes I guess, hance the album's title. Also quite emotional and personal, both in Beck's voice of course, but the lyrics too. Wistful, lonely, desolate, don't expect to hear the goofy white boy stuff you're used to hearing from Beck. It's kind of too much at a point, but I can also appreciate the emotional vulnerability and maturity that Beck displays here.

This is my second Beck album and I am once again annoyed at the list for giving certain (usually male) artists so many albums while women artists are left off completely or only have one album. Beck is fine, but not good enough to warrant the number of albums on this list. I love a good breakup album, and I have been known to love the “sad guy with a guitar” trope but Beck misses the mark. There are a few songs that break the dreary, samey mold- Lonesome Tears especially. But overall, this is incredibly boring.

I prefer a weirder brand of Beck.

3.0 Album was fine, Beck's vocals kinda surprised me here, pretty good and fit in with the songs. Sea Change makes some pretty tasty beers if you get your hands on some. Id rate the beer 4.2

so far i love, Guess i'm doing fine and lonesome tears

Surprisingly depressing

kind of boring, but better than “Morning Phase”

this was not as fun for my bus ride lol. beautiful though

Melancholy bois only. I enjoyed the backing music more than the lyrics. I’d give it a 2.5 but will round up to be nice.

lovely stuff

Interesting but bland

Good! Very mellow and acoustic. I don't love his voice....

Yusu beetje saai

I don't know. Too sad. Too slow. Too long. It gets the atmosphere, it gets the feeling, but you need to put something more on the table for me. The first song that made me think "I like this one" was the one that automatically started after the album ended. Turns out I really like Beck when he's in other artists projects. Not that much on his own.

I prefer my Beck to be lo-fi, angular and experimental. This Beck is acoustic and sad. I didn't mind it, but it doesn't reach purchase material levels. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit 🫳 ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 320 Already owned : 72 Purchased : 15 To buy : 4 Nope : 229

Suena bien, pero demasiado lentorro

There’s bits I liked and bits I found a bit slow

Me guardo Paper tiger, Guess I'm doing fine y Lost cause.

Better than other Beck albums, I am surprised I find it so boring

This was alright, a little too long for a redundant downbeat album

Sad Beck is not my favorite Beck.

It was pretty, and sad, and didn't make much of an impression on me.

Really good album. Enjoyable. More consistent than earlier albums but no songs that get your attention…, like loser.

Best Track - "Lost Cause"

Pretty good

Beck is able to do something that Radiohead can’t, make a sad mournful album interesting to listen to

No queda guardado.

Out of all the Beck albums, why this one? It was mopey as fuck. I kept waiting for a Cell Phone Is Dead song or something cool. There were a couple of ok songs but overall this was a lame ass album. Hope Beck has found a new girlfriend and starts making better albums

It was chill and decent. Nothing really compelling.

Not my fav Beck album.

Ahh such downtrodden beck, always kinda is but with a little more pep in the step. Though I knew this one when it came up but not really I guess, tracks as it would not have excited 13 year old me 3+

Odelay kind of set Beck up to be the 90s version of David Bowie or David Byrne, and Guero furthered that idea but felt a little darker overall. I would have guessed this record was the third of the three I've mentioned, but it was released in the middle. Weird! It's an aptly named record for Beck's transition to simpler and more emotionally charged songwriting. Guero makes more sense as a "return to form" record now, in that it gets back into more experimentation again. I'm not sure what to make of this one though... I understand why critics would have liked it, but I'm not sure it totally connects with me. Perhaps I need to listen to even more Beck albums to appreciate what's happening here? If I rated Guero a 3, that's gotta be the ceiling for this record too.

*2002. *Sad, somber album. Sounds a lot like the Rhett miller album that came out the same year. *I only knew one song - Lost Cause. *Overall fine, but forgettable. RATING - 6.5/10

Beck's sad breakup album. Totally different sound for him than prior albums. Some songs sound like Nick Drake, some a little like a Nirvana ballad. It's good, but nothing truly great. Pitchfork: 6.9 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #436 (2020)

perfectly okay album to have on while you're working. Not extraordinary; not disappointing.

Tranquilo y relajante. Algunas canciones medio largas.

More a general wave of chill vibes than what we'd come to expect from a Beck album, I always come away from this one relaxed and unsure if there was a single track that stood out. Not necessarily a criticism; when you're looking for that kind of thing, this one fills the order.

Bij Beck heb ik soms het "Eels-gevoel". Soms wel, Soms niet. Nu is het momenteel "Niet"... Morgen een nieuwe dag. Een neutrale 3...

By all fairness, this is a gorgeous listen. The instrumentation is beautiful, Beck’s vocals—while not my favorite—convey the deep melancholy this album’s going for. It’s just mush to me. Melancholic mush. I’ve never been a fan of sad-boy-with-acoustic-guitar music. I don’t think I’d listen to the entire album again, but there were many individual songs I’d play, like Paper Tiger and Sunday Sun.

Kinda mid, the production is nice and it’s filled with ear candy but I hate his voice and honestly this is not my favorite style in the slightest. The end of the album is the best part, this end made up for the first half of the album. I loved the guitar riff on already dead. 4/5

The sea will rock you to sleep.

Never followed Beck. No good reason why. So, this is pretty much my introduction to him. The songwriting is excellent and heartfelt. Breakups are painful and he expresses that eloquently. The music and production are are brilliant. Liked it very much.

5.5/10 Beck throws songwriting and composition standards out the window on this album, which is clearly an artistic release for what was a low point in his life. Most songs have no defined chorus, monotonous delivery, and all of them are particularly sad. It's a good album that is somewhat difficult to get through as there's just so much sad in here without reprieve. The raw acoustic guitar tracks seemed to grab my attention the best. Lost Cause, The Golden Age and Guess I'm Doing Fine were my favourites. Overall it was a nice, albeit sad listen. Best track: Lost Cause Will I revisit?: No

I wouldn't be a good friend to Beck Because I'm really not interested in listening to sad Beck. I'm sorry Beck. How about I give you three stars instead of two? Would that cheer you up at all?

It gives a sad chill vibe, like when you are in your room smoking and looking at the ceiling, it's the kind of vibe this album bring, and it also a calm serenate one, you can listening while you are reading a book o Just doing something else

Fine. The arrangements were cool I guess. I really didn't like this as much as Guero. Decent but not incredible.

I enjoy this version of toned down beck much better but still doesn't seem that impressive of a recording- there are many deep cut folk and country rock records that do a better job of conveying the same message

Also zieht sich dann immer.

Probably my favourite Beck album so far (heard quite a few already, not sure if this is the last one.) It's quite melancholic and dreamy, it's the perfect album if just want to feel the just plain old sadness. It's different from other Beck albums I've heard (Odelay and Guero) in that it's not eclectic, but who cares, an album with just lovely arrangements that do nothing but enhance the sorrow that is expressed on the album. Highlight Song/s: "Sunday Sun"

While this is not Beck album I would have chosen for this list, it’s a melodic and fun listen.

not as good as odelay

Sad Beck is better than shitty rapping beck Will I listen to again: 10%

A little sad. Overall good but a bit to downbeat and melancholy. The track Lost Cause was a standout.

I like his party albums but Beck is nonetheless a genius.

Muy tranquilo,de ambiente,agradable

"It must be nice to be a man and make boring music just because you can" ~ Florence Welch (who is missing from the list) Didn't mind this! Very nice actual music. Couldn't really tell what he was moaning on about, but it didn't distract from just listening to the music in the background. Good!

Great album. Already heard it many times, downloaded and passed down from my pops.

Pleasant, melodic, and melancholy. A bit long and the opening track is by far the best one the album has to offer, but very good overall

Not my favorite Beck album

Sad and slow

A depressing journey. You find yourself surrounded by an overwhelming, noisy combination of chords and words that touch the darkest parts of us. Sad is the sea of change.

Good, just maybe not the right time for it for me

A reflective, bleak, low-key, semi acoustic album. A good, three-star album. 1 "The Golden Age" (4/5) 2 "Paper Tiger" (3/5) 3 "Guess I'm Doing Fine" (3/5) 4 "Lonesome Tears" (3/5) 5 "Lost Cause" (3/5) 6 "End of the Day" (3/5) 7 "It's All In Your Mind" (3/5) 8 "Round The Bend" (3/5) 9 "Already Dead" (3/5) 10 "Sunday Sun" (3/5) 11 "Little One" (3/5) 12 "Side of the Road" (3/5) Total - 37 Average - 3.08 298/1001 160/298 albums reviewed were new to me

This was new to me, having not really kept up with Beck after Midnite Vultures. Really enjoyed it, would definitely listen again.

A few really great tracks on this (Lost Cause being my favorite). I wanted more memorable choruses, though, and a bit more range tempo-wise. 3.5 rounding down.

Favorite track(s): Paper Tiger, Lost Cause, Already Dead, Sunday Sun

This reminded me a lot of Nick Drake, and I should have liked it more than I did. I should come back and give this another shot sometime, but it didn't do anything for me at the time

this was fine. good music sometimes. his voice made me want to yawn but not in a bad way?

Enjoyed the blend of traditional countrified acoustic guitars with synths and spacey effects. Strong 3.5

It wasn't bad but after listening to the whole album I can't say anything really stood out...

This is gonna take more listens to really get

Whenever I listen to Beck – which is rare, I confess – I find myself thinking that I ought to listen to more of his music. Or that it just doesn’t move me. This album is certainly one of his best. Beautifully sad, a love child of the Velvet Underground’s debut and early Radiohead, slightly drunk, introvert and definitely depressive. And yes, I understand why he was (or is?) such an important figure during the decline of rock music, and I do like what I hear. But even this album doesn’t quite resonate with me. Maybe I'm getting too old for this kind of music. Or I just have enough of this music in my collection. Still, I’ll put it on my to-listen-again list.

not my type of music but i could see the hype

Pleasant, but not a single standout song

Meh roots/country album

it was okay, they have better songs

Good; pleasant listen but maybe a bit dull

Not really a fan of Beck, a little too run at the mill. Composition and production quality is redeeming though

A nice chill salve for a stressful day. Beck is cool as

Was OK but a bit slow and mellow for me.

Pretty chill album with some good moments

It starts off a bit plain but by 'Round The Bend' I started to get into it more. There was one song that sounded almost like it could have been a Nick Drake song. I only owned 'Odelay' so that's really all I know of Beck outside of 'Loser'

Pretty calming, It's All In Your Mind was my stand out. Don't remember a lot though. 5.5/10.

Not my bag really but certainly not a bad album

I could take it or I could leave it or I could could it or take could take it

was alright i guess

Melancholic but not gloomy Nice production A little overlong given the fact that the subject matter and overall sound of each song is fairly similiar. Overall, worth hearing but not going to be in my regular rotation.

Sad melancholic, but good

I never really paid much attention to Beck. I suppose because he was just such a staple of 90’s-00’s radio rock. This is a decent record but I don’t know if I’d placed it in the top 1001. But I’m not really in the mood for something like this today so it’s worth a relisten.

It was okay

A melancholy, acoustic album of break-up songs, a change of direction for Beck at the time, or so it seems, I don't know because I've never really listened to him. Anyway it's a pleasant enough listen.

First I was not into it, it grew on me, even to the point that I found it fantastic

I liked it! Nothing much to say other than it made me feel like I was back in high school and I think Beck has better stuff than Sea Change

A very chill, melancholy, sad album. Not really any songs in particular that stood out but it was a vibe for a rainy, relaxing night.

Surprisingly U2-ish in a lot of places. Beck is almost always a vibe. This is probably some of the more approachable, wider appeal Beck music I have heard. That said, I think it's a bit sad sack and can fade into the background. This is great moody music, great background music. Will I remember any major point as sticking out? I don't think so, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad. Very solid music and I like the influences of regular Beck towards the end infused with the almost post-rock minimalism of a lot of the rest of it.

Wait…this isn’t a pearl Jam album?

Was not expecting Beck to sound like this, good stuff

Moody country-like record. None of those things are my thing. It's good music, but my kinda music 6/10

When I got Odelay, an earlier album by Beck, I said it was good in concept but didn't stick the landing and felt a bit rough/off. This album feels the exact opposite, Beck found out to make some really nice music, but here it all sounds so safe while I feel like it wants to be experimental and different. I feel like Beck polished Odelay so hard to make this album that he sanded of what made it special, and now it feels like a regular softpop/country album, or maybe a porcupine tree album when porcupine tree would be made by some major pop label who don't actually want to experiment. tl;dr the quality of the songs might be better, but it is a lot less musical.

Chill background music, sorry Beck

Holy depression, Batman, this dude needed a hug in 2002. This is my first listen of an entire Beck album, and it’s a sad one. He apparently wrote this after his long-term relationship ended, which makes complete sense thinking back to the music. There’s some really neat arrangements on here, lots of big, loud string sections that elevate the material. The music was good, but I wasn’t in love with the vocal style or the 52 straight minutes of sadness. 3/5

I like Beck, but I’ve never listen to or heard any songs on this album before. I feel like this album was a lot different than the type of music I associate Beck with. Very much enjoyed listening to it!

Folk rock, country rock, chamber pop.

Look this album is fine. It's quite good. But it is really one of the least interesting and ambitious of Beck's storied catalogue. Mellow Gold, Odelay, Midnite Vultures and basically everything he did after this - not necessarily better, but more interesting. Fave Tracks: The Golden Age, Lost Cause, Already Dead 3.4/5

3.8 maybe? Nice atmosphere but ig atp its nothing new, or maybe im not as depressed as i once was

I have a pretty instant aversion to Beck but this one grew on me with time. Whiny gave way to sincere

Fine if Beck is your thing .

My least favorite Beck album. But, it’s still Beck…

fine. very atmospheric

Decent album.

I do really like a lot of Beck’s work. Overall this is a very moody album, so I have to be in the correct head space to get the most out of it.

its like listening a song repeats 'uuhhh uuuuhhh' in the background

Not what I was expecting from Beck, pretty depressing... and I like it!

Some beautiful stuff but the low energy kind of made me drag at certain points in the listening experience.

this is pretty good, but nothing super special.

Off of the first song I’m under the impression there’s going to be a lot of acoustic guitar-remind me of ok computer by Radiohead Slower and more mellow

A whole album of Beck does not a good time make. I like individual songs well enough when I hear them but a whole album just turns into a slightly dreary background hum to me.

One or two tracks that interested me but generally a bit dull. However, I didn't dislike any of it but I doubt I will remember it in a weeks time.

Ok at times but often a bit boring. I preferred his earlier album midnight cultures with more energy. 3.4 stars

I like this album and I like Beck, but this isn't my favourite album. I like it's sad and mournful feeling up to a point, but then I wanted it to pick up or approach these feelings in a different way, which never really happened. A good album though.

Lots of string instruments. Kind of a soft, quiet vocals. Chill, but not really my thing.

Never been a Beck fan, but this ain’t half bad

Easy Sunday listening Fave track: Guess I'm Doing Fine

Didn’t need to hear this right now, Jesus wept. 3.5/5

Too slow

Relaxing but nothing special

nice safe beck sound ..nothing new

I have a funny relationship with Beck's music where I find some of his more acclaimed albums to be kind of overrated and I prefer some of the less popular ones. With Sea Change my issue is that its melodrama runs a bit long throughout the whole thing. The production, which is usually fun and vibrant on his albums, is very stripped back and acoustic here. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes some of the songs like End of the Day, Round the Bend and Side of the Road sound a little thin. As for Beck, it's a very sad and personal album and I certainly appreciate that. Problem is, it doesn't have the emotional power of let's say an Elliott Smith album. Beck doesn't really have the ability to make words resonate with me as much as some other artists do. The album does have a fair amount of beautiful ballads - The Golden Age is majestic with its beautiful, rich instrumentation and amazing chord changes and it contrasts beautifully with the minimal but groovy Paper Tiger that has amazing string sections in the back half. There is also Lost Cause which is the most heart wrenching ballad on the whole album. While not my favorite from Beck, I can at least take away a few songs from it that I really enjoy. Maybe it would hit harder if I was miserable and crying myself to sleep every night.

There isn't anything I dislike on this but it does feel a bit redundant. Some of the string arrangements reminded me of Nick Drake! End of The Day was quite catchy, liked it a lot, I liked many other songs, but they all blended together a bit too much. Great voice! Oh and... Lost Cause is great!

Decent

It’s good, but I prefer a more experimental, funkier Beck on Odelay or Guero. I liked “it’s all in your mind”

Beck goes country. This album shares the very same DNA as the most sorrowful country album you can find. Gone are Beck's signature music collages, replaced with somber songs about a break up. It's wonderful but sad. Not nearly as fun as his other albums but that's the point. 3

Folk rock. 1st track, The Golden Age is a bit too slow and melancholy for me. Paper Tiger has interesting instrumentals that complement the vocal delivery Rather than getting old, the slow melancholy style gets nicer and easier to listen to Some very nice moments and I like the overall feel, but it doesn't grip me. Best track - Paper Tiger, End Of The Day 3 stars, but a high 3

Beck is very talented and went for a specific mood. Liked it, didn't love it.

A little too sad for my tastes.

Reasonable vibes.

love Beck

Beck is very very talented. Very relaxing music, great vocals. I think I would have to listen to it again and look at the lyrics fully grasp it.

Oh Beck - you complete me

Great album Song I like: the golden age, Lost Cause,

Don't remember much from it. Kind of boring but not bad

I really like Beck. I tend to lean more toward Odelay and the one after that, however I really enjoy his ability to change styles up so seamlessly. This was a great album and a natural "next step" for him in a career that is always looking for something different.

I’m pretty disappointed with this one because the first two songs surprised me and got me excited for the rest of the album, but then I found that all of the songs sounded so similar to each other, in less of a cool and consistent way and in more of a dull and boring way. I get that it sounds this way because it’s a breakup album, but even that aspect didn’t get through to me. Maybe on their own the songs are good, because I did enjoy the production, but I think it’s a case where the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

pretty chill, nothing too crazy about it.

Kinda sounds like Pearl Jam + Pink Floyd + Elton John

Decent, but this one had never clicked for me.

So he may or may not be a Scientologist??? Either way this album's pretty boring

Decent album. Standout songs: Guess im doing fine End of the day Already dead

I like it, but i don't love it. It's got some nice hooks, but his voice grates on me a bit.

Unoffensive, and beautiful parts.

Touches of psychedelia and country. First time I’ve heard this and quite enjoyed it

Competent but the deeper meaning eluded me

I like Beck fine enough, but the songs sound too familiar and bleed into each other a bit. Still a very listenable album.

Ok album with loads of interesting things in there. Not my go to music but would not mind listening to this if it comes up. I would rate this 2,5 stars but I quess I'll round it up to 3.

A little bit too somber for me …..

Well, Beck. "Singer/songwriter" in a way.

- a good album to dissociate/ugly cry to - meilleure chanson: the golden age

Very mellow. Too mellow even. Sounds good, but has no energy.

This album had a pretty unique, chill style. I’m not sure I loved it… I didn’t dislike it, but it simply wasn’t exciting enough for me. Not bad, though.

Easy album to listen to.

Mellower than I’ve heard him. I prefer his experimental side over this, but it was nice.

This is like the 4th best Beck album imo

This one was tough. I didn’t realize beforehand this was one of his albums that was a bit more country influenced than what I have previously heard for him and I was thrown off by that for sure. I enjoyed some songs, but a lot of the album I still felt like there was just SOMETHING missing for me like it was almost what I was wanting to hear but instead was left with a bit of disappointment. I liked most of the lyrics and I like beck’s voice though at least. Maybe I’d like this more in the future on a relisten but idk

Lovely but too mellow for me. I do love the strings on Paper Tiger.

There are moments of this that I really like and there are others that are super dreary and dull. I can't decide how I feel about this.

It was kinda sad not my vibe for today I’ll try later when I’m saf

A real sea change for alternative rock music, showing that 90s indie acts had more than feelings than nonchalance, they could also be morose.

I had a cassette copy of Mellow Gold when I was in high school, and it wasn’t something that stuck with me. Beck seemed a little too on the nose, the poster boy for the whole Gen X/slacker thing. Didn’t follow him past that. This is a well-written, well-produced breakup album, and it feels heartfelt. I hear echos of Nick Drake and Scott Walker in here. Somehow, as a listener, I like the sincerity here even less than his earlier wry slacker persona. It just feels that I’ve heard a bunch of things like this before, and without having a personal connection to it, it doesn’t really move me beyond it being a nice listen. I can see why people like it though.

Feels like sitting alone in a boat that's just slowly swaying back and forth in the water, except there is no water. It's just a boat a void with a disturbing lack of texture. It's a foam filled comforter in primary colors floating in space.

A good breakup album with beautiful production and fantastic string arrangements. When this came out it was very popular with my fellow college students, who were, naturally, going through breakups all the time. It's a sad and gloomy album but Beck's approach to the subject matter is universal and restrained, never veering into embarrassing details or overly emotional expressions. Nigel Godrich paints these simple, acoustic guitar-focused songs with kaleidoscopic color, perfectly representing the mildly psychedelic experience of rediscovering oneself in the midst of a romantic rupture. Favorite song: Paper Tiger

It’s pretty good. Kinda mellow

Every song sounded the same.

I'd only heard Loser by Beck and was interested in seeing what else he has. All in all, a solid album. The music is really good, and his vocals hit nicely. The Golden Age is chill, nice music there. Paper Tiger was really good. Guess I'm Doing Fine had a nice melancholy feel to it. After about 7 tracks, it starts to drag a bit. Still, overall a decent album. Best song: Paper Tiger

I feel like Rodrick Heffley

Some really emotionally and well written songs. Well done.

Lets say i wasnt struck by it

super calming

i didn’t mind it.

Honestly, not my favorite Beck. It's completely off brand, but I respect that. The songs are good, but after a while you begin to know that the guy is going through something and it's pretty sad.

Very dull album. Liked it at first, before realizing that every song is the same slow melodrama. Still, good at what it's trying to do. Standout Tracks: The Golden Age, Guess I'm Doing Fine

I'll admit, I'm still mad at Beck for what he did to Cage the Elephant. But honestly this album feels like the transitionary point from older, experimental Beck into his newer, more self indulgent paradigm. I can hear a lot of things i like, he is a talented an interesting composer. Lyrically i found this album rarely, although not never, rising above forgettable. I am not a fan of Beck's ballads, of which there are several on this album. Not my favorite, even among Beck's catalog.

The cool thing about Beck is that you never know what you’re going to get, but you can be sure it’s going to be good. In this case it’s acoustic, laid back, almost moody Beck. But it’s really good. It’s not really a party album, but that’s ok. I dig it.

Chill... Almost too chill

This sounds like a Neil Young album to me with the harmonica and slide guitar. Not what I expected after only hearing Loser and Novacane from Odelay before. I like it but don't think I wouldn't find it notable without Beck's name attached to it.

not my favorite but still worth a listen

Enjoyable, not what I expected only knowing beck for Loser but will likely revisit

Yeah, it sounds good, especially for background. The voice is good, the guitar is good, so many layers in the music. It’s just nice to listen to, so calm, somber, melancholic and saaad because it's basically a post-breakup/depression album. Nothing catchy or something that holds my attention. At least it’s not another British band of 70s or 80s hahahahahah, so it was interesting to listen to. But not enough for me 3/5 —————————————— No liked songs

moody white boy. didn’t finish

Slow Beck slow.

Really a weird album...

3 stars

Guys sad.

Snoozy, but then, so is Beck for the most part.

Had this after Nick Drake´s Five leaves left. Compared to that I liked this album considerably less. However, I could see myself listening to it again somewhere down the road.

some weird Eddie Vedder style singing. 1st track nice, if a bit dull. paper tiger nice cool sounds / bit gazey

Niet van m’n sokken geblazen

I want to rate this higher but it was just so long and dragged out a lot. Each song could've been reduced and lost nothing. I think the snail pace of each song made it seem longer than it was. I liked the simplicity though of the guitar and vocals. His voice sounds a little like Bono which I think is a good thing. There was some clear messages in the songs which were meaningful. 6/10

Really liked Lonesome Tears. Quite good album. Didn’t get more than 3 from me because it cleaves a little too closely to the sensitive man with guitar genre that bores me

I’m okay on this. It was like the chill mellow parts of that Ariel pink record. Or a father John misty album. But like nothing reallly hooked me despite the inclusion of some of our jellyfish friends…

Just a gloomy beck album? It’s nicely themed. Every track is good but a bit too depressing. It reminds me of a Taiwanese artist album I loved before. That album was about time. It includes topics like peace&revolution/infinity/ripples/reincarnation/hourglass/platonic love etc. It is a good album but it will take me hours to appreciate. If I have more time on this album I might like it. But just for first time listen, it was just alright.

Somber and melancholy, which got a huge boost from the weather the day I listened to it. I do enjoy how Beck tries different styles but this isn’t the one I find the most appealing. Middle of the road.

Not Beck's best.

pretty good, but dark. Depressing

Beck is good but this isn't his best.

I’m not a big fan of Beck. I mean, I generally enjoy his music, but it doesn’t impress me. He experiments a lot with his style, which I appreciate, but most of his experiments are not really in the realm of things I enjoy that much. This album is kind of the same thing. It’s a non-generic, relatively fun folk rock album, but it doesn’t do enough to stand out, in my opinion. I really liked all the chamber tracks here, but other than that, the vibes are nice but nothing exceptional. 7/10

Nice atmospheric dreamy pop rock record.

I dream

When I read the Wiki entry prior to listening to the album I saw words to describe the album as heartbreak, desolation, solitude, and loneliness. This excited me because when I’m in that sort of mood I love music to make me wallow in my own sadness or pit of despair. On listening there was plenty of melancholy on display but unfortunately a lot of it was delivered in a Country Music style which took the edge off it. Yes there were one of two opuses with soaring orchestration which did hit the mark. The best of these and the best track on the album being Paper Tiger. But overall not an album likely to accompany me and a bottle of red wine to sit in the dark and contemplate all my lost loves and heartache. 3/5 9/12/25

Solid voice with clean instrumentals behind him. The album is a bit somber for my liking but his serous, deep tone completes the desired effect.

Schön aber nicht catchy

Ganz gut aber etwas sehr viel singsang

Good album, not 2hat i expected. Need another listen

Pleasant, but didn’t knock my socks off.

It's fine I guess. I greatly prefer party Beck to introspective Beck.

I got this when it came out and I liked it ok at the time. Relistening to it now though, I think the reason it didn’t become a favourite is because the melancholy is so…forceful? Overbearing? It’s not fragile like Pink Moon or something. I feel like I can only listen to one or two songs at a time to really enjoy it.

At times this really hits the spot for folk - alt country. Radiohead like melody's and pacing. Overall just falls a little short.

All sounded the same after a while but a bit boring

Rather boring to be honest

Interesting. I had only heard Beck's more experimental stuff before. For me, this suffered from coming the day after Frank Sinatra. I am much more the intedned audience for Beck, and I think this record is more creative and interesting in lots of ways than the Sinatra. But Sinatra somehow communicates melancholy and loss in an elemental, archetypal way, and this feels a bit wan in comparison.

Man, Beck is so talented. This album is unlike any of his others and is - as advertised - his lament for a lost relationship. As such, it is far slower and sadder than my personal tastes. But it is just so well done. Influence 3. Quality 4. Intangibles 3. Hits 2. Not my cup of tea, but a nice, mellow listen if you're in to that sort of a thing 3.

Lost cause is great, but the album wears on you

Not as funky as the other Beck stuff I like, but pretty good.

Have to listen again but first listen was mid

It’s a well made album but a chore to get through

It was pretty decent but kinda airy?

some decent stuff, mostly beck

This really is a pretty album. Beautiful voice, lyricism, and soothing guitar. I just didn't particularly vibe with the mopey aesthetic at the time of listening to this album. I think, when I'm in a specific mood, this would absolutely speak to me. I also just prefer the older Beck songs, usually. Not by any means a bad album, but it was one that I did not particularly connect to at the time of my listen.

I’ve never listened any of his music. I found the alb interesting and think it should be played a few more times.

I like Beck, but I'm not used to sad Beck.

Some very pleasant songs that all hit nearly the same exact tone. Nice to listen to, but tends to fall into the background.

I think this album is fine. On the first listen many years ago I thought I'd come back to it often, but in the end I listened twice through and that was all. I kinda get the inclusion of two Beck albums for historical reasons but it also makes me surly about the male-dominance of the list. The musician that made the transition from weirdo semi-outsider to lush mainstream pop, with albums still worth listening to 20 years later, is Cat Power. Beck is forgettable.

okay meh

A bit of a snoozer compared to other Beck albums but I can understand why people like it. Some good songs but none that I'd specifically come back for. The whole is better than the sum of its parts.

It was fine. Much rather listen to “Face Value” by Phil Collins or “Here, My Dear” by Marvin Gaye though. Those guys better conveyed their heartbreak, anger, and sadness than Beck did. I suppose everyone goes through their feelings differently than anyone else.

I actually own this album. I have probably only listened to it 2 or 3 times prior to today. I'm a huge fan of his album Mutations and I figured this would be similar. However, this is his breakup album and it's very depressing which is probably why I didn't listen to it much. Listening for this project I was reminded of the song Lost Cause which I liked a lot (enough to remember from before.) I knew Golden Age first from a great KT Tunstall cover on her acoustic album.. which most likely led me to buy the Beck album. This is Beck at his simplest... no crazy samples or cryptic (odd) lyrics. Even though the lyrics are simple it seems like Beck is mumbling his way through them and I wish the vocals were clearer. Song to song is mostly the same monotone muddy vocals without much dynamic from track to track. This album is not bad but not his best. Because I'm aware of his other albums this will more than likely be judged harsher than if this was a true first listen to an artist I knew nothing else about.

A bit boring for Beck. Had really expected more. Great lullaby album.

MMM Ya Beck is wicked sad man. 3.5

It was ok, easy listening. Very well mastered

Not sure how much more you can stetch out doom as was achieved in the song "Round the Bend". Nothing is around the bend! In fairness there is quite a lot of very beautiful sounds which wrap the bleak in a kind of blanket. Its warming in a way which I appreciated but only so much gentle guitair plucking I can accept if you dont transition somewhere. "Already Dead" - Had a pace I appreciated as it maintained the pain but without the drawn out nature I came to expect. Each note and lyric bounced onward which seemed missing elsewhere. The good news I dont find this particularly offensive listening which is handy. I could let this wash over me and allow the odd golden nugget to get through which do exist. It was oddly relaxing in the end but ultimately a miss to break through the low middle music field. Rounded up!

It's quite a good listen and better than previous offerings from Beck. It sounds like the love child of modern indie and country and western. A well recorded album with good tone throughout and quite morose in a folk/singer/songwriter style. Other than being generally quite pleasant, I didn't feel a deeper connection and there was always a slight suspicion that Beck thinks he is a lot greater than he actually is. I might be being unfair but I'm going to judge him for it anyway.

No está mal, pero...

2002 jahapp

Too chill

Better than I expected after only knowing (and disliking) Loser.

Very, very sad.

I admit I had never listened to Beck before. While it was quite listenable the overall tone was a bit too dark and depressing for my taste. Easier to listen to than some songs on this list that I just can’t make it through but nothing on here will make me want to listen to this album again. 3 Stars.

I feel like I remember enjoying this one a lot more than I actually do now. There's plenty to appreciate here, some really strong lyricism, and I love the orchestral arrangements, which kind of remind me of Radiohead. It's just really top-heavy to me. First five songs are great, topped off with the brilliant Lost Cause, then it just kinda meanders and a lot of the songs enter a sort of dreary saminess. I do like Sunday Sun and the ultra bleak country instrumentals on Side of the Road though. Overall a good album but not one for regular listening for me

Much of the album sounded "same-y" to me.

kinda groovy but wouldnt actively listen to it if i wanted to lsiten to something

Not his finest

Ok, decent album but can't quite see why it's on this list

Beautifully recorded and mixed. A little too consistently downtempo for me.

not familiar with beck but will probably listen more after this
