Meh...There's some good individual songs here that sound great in isolation, but a whole albums worth of slow, melancholy break up songs that all end up sounding similar gets really old, really quickly.

Ho va ser amb 'Odelay', que és un disc fantàstic, però lluny de ser una obra maestra; ho va ser amb 'Mutations', que té alguns temes increïbles, però ja... i ho va tornar a ser amb 'Sea Change', condecorat com una de les millors obres nascudes de ruptura de relació. Va, home. Comparar el disc amb un génere (?) que ha donat obres tan icòniques com 'Blood on the Tracks', 'Rumours' o 'Shoot Out the Lights', pero posar els primers exemples que em venen al cap, ha de ser una broma... el disc es deixa escoltar, és agradable... i poc més...

A much more reflective and personal album than Beck's preceeding ones. Deserves a second listen

I know a LITTLE about Beck, I know he's a bit of an alternative darling, and the few songs of his I know are from the early 90s... this could go either way. Ok first song is pretty cool. It's a bit more downbeat than I expected, at least compared to his earlier stuff. Not exactly an award winner imo, and it goes FAR too long for something that never really kicks into overdrive. Final thoughts: this would have been a 3 if he'd known when to rein it in a bit, but this just draaaaagged. And that's after a genuinely good opening track. 2/5.

4.0 + A very different direction for Beck after coming off some freaky pan-genre explorations via "Odelay" and "Midnite Vultures" (also terrific records). Here's Beck's breakup album that draws inspiration from the American songbook with soft inflections of other genres, all modernized with subtle studio flourishes to keep sparkle in the background. It's mostly downtempo with uncomplicated chord structures, with the exception of "Paper Tiger" which is just awesome. Some will find this album a little staid and even boring. At times, the breakup aspect of this album feels a little on-the-nose. Still, it maintains a morose atmosphere that I find quite pretty.

Sea Change is not of of my preferred Beck albums. After listening to it once again for this list, I must admit it is still a solid piece of music. It's sort of a back to the basics idea with simpler lyrics and real instruments and less electronics/sampling. It is lacking a real classic song though.

Nice acoustics and composition. Often hard to distinguish songs from another due to similar pace and tone. Feels like a rainy day blues kind of record and maybe a decent one. Curious to see if Beck has other dimensions. Paper tiger, end of the day, Sonny Sunday, little one

I refreshed the page and it ate my review, so you get bullet points this time: • I just yesterday said I want my downer albums to at least thrash about a bit before collapsing under the weight of the world, so I appreciate that Sea Change has a little bit of that going on. • "Break up with Beck" produces solid results for a sad sack LP, although not as good as "introduce Trent Reznor to heroin." • This thing is way too long. Beck adheres to a "mope around with an acoustic guitar > introduce strings, maybe some synth > get all spacey in the closing seconds" flowchart far too closely here. • By the time he's singing "It's nothing that I haven't seen before" around the halfway point, I feel like I'm being pranked, except the only funny gag Sea Change has to offer is on Sunday Sun, where the little scamp seems to have recorded his verses with an Ed, Edd, n Eddy-sized Jawbreaker in his mouth. It's fine. I would've preferred Odelay, but of course I would. Key Tracks: The Golden Age

Not what I expected at all but pleasantly surprised!

Feels pretty raw listening to this album - the man sounds gutted after his break up. Sunday Sun is amazing. Some neat songwriting here. Three for now could be a four later.

There's a slide or pedal in the very beginning: A strong opening which would usually cast the other sonics in country colors. The string sections alongside are arranged like soundtracks. There's noise, too: occasional distortion, creaks, what appears to be an engine. It all comes together, surprisingly, into a post-rock effect. Not something that would obviously work with pop music. Accessible is what the words and arrangements make each track. Masterfully prepared.

I rated Odelay by Beck 2 stars. Can't really remember why because my review stated that I don't have much to say about Beck. I guess I don't have all too much to say about this one either, though I like it much better. It's very melancholy and it sounds pretty good. That's really it.

Far from Beck's best, yet a nice and very melodic (and relaxing) album despite the obvious personal crisis that triggered it. Bit too un-exciting for me, but definitely great for certain moods.

Not an upbeat album, very much a downbeat, pensive, thoughtful time listen. Listened to it a lot when it came out.

Just a lot of the same sad song. A good listen, still. Generally beautiful music with sad and soft (sometimes unintelligible) vocals. A bunch of the songs also did the gimmicky devolve into distortion at the end. A couple of songs had my attention but none were really engaging or memorable.

So Beck is one of those that I never really "got". Sure there was a good single or two but it seems like his music is held in such high regard. I gotta say, this was pretty darn good. Decent variety, not relying on a gimmick or an overused signature sound. 3.5, I can't quite give it a 4 though.

A bit on the slow and sad side, but I enjoyed it. The melodies are nice and I love the sound of the guitar. The acoustic sound is mellow and relaxing.

I love this album. Lush strings and some extremely well-placed devastating chord changes. I fell in love with Beck's music from this album, and is still the one I go to if I want a fix o' Beck.

Always been Beck-neutral. Nothing changing here

Had to listen to this twice to really get a feel for it. The music kind of sits in a comfortable place between country, folk, and Coldplay/Radiohead-style early-2000s rock. It's very pleasant to listen to! Beck's vocals are very low-key and underplayed, while still packing in quite a bit of emotion. I've been oscillating between 3 and 4 stars, but I think I talked myself up to 4. Lonesome Tears is the track that did it for me.

Not sure what to make of this, quite a difficult album. You really need to be in the mood for this, much more melancholy than I was expecting and drags a bit at times but there is a lot to enjoy too and I would revisit. Paper Tiger the pick of the bunch for me - superb track - but some other very good tracks on here too.

A really nice surprise- I love a bit of chilled acoustic Beck (morning phase being a good example) and I’ve clearly let this pass me by back in the day - loved it and will be back for more

its a bit dull at times but it is a great work. Lost Cause is a timeless classic even if it did not top the charts. it is the most convincing change of direction on their 8th album by any artist.

Folk beck

Didn't expect this kind of album from Beck. Liked it way more that I thought I would've. The songwriting is my favorite part, really nice arrangements. The acoustic was nice and he really just created an atmosphere. Would definitely listen again. Standout tracks Lost Cause and Already Dead. 6/10

This album is the equivalent of like, doing the bare minimum extremely well. Production is PHENOMENAL and songwriting is primitive. It’s less impressive than his previous outings like mellow gold and odelay but some bangers hit the feels pretty well. Beck has no edge on sea change but he’s riding sad boy wave pretty well.

Very Beck, I think the opening number is so similar to his number morning from 2014. What can I say, It is one of the most sundayish albums, a relaxing and mellow feeling that I really like.

Despite growing up the child of Beck fans I can't say I really got into his music until Morning Phase, which I'd still probably list as one of my top 10 albums of all time. It's not surprising then that my first reaction to putting on this ablum was, "wait this sounds just like Morning Phase." I'm sure I had read they were companions at some point but can't say I ever gave this one a listen. All in all this album has all the guitar goodness and interesting range that makes me love Morning Phase (and generally appreciate Beck). However, knocking points b/c they really do have almost too many similarities with Morning Phase still coming out on top for me. Why put on Sea Change when you can put on Morning Phase?

Revisiting this album is both a blessing and a curse. The songwriting is still so far ahead of contemporaries, but now comparing it to the later Morning Phase album shows a less polished effort. Even when stacked against that, this album still shines, just not as bright.

I love Beck, although this is his slowest and most somber album. As a standalone I'm not sure it works, although it does have some songs I like. But, as part of the Beck discography it fits in and is critical, in a way.

Yawn. Pretty much what I expected after seeing the album cover. The chorus' and outro for Lonesome Tears were pretty strong though. Best track: Lonesome Tears.

I've been aware of Beck since I was a kid. He always won Best International Male at the Brits and MTV awards but Id never really listened to him or knew much of his stuff. After listening to this album I'm pretty much in the same position. Insipid, melodramatic melancholia.

Hadn't heard this album before. Much more chill and less rock-heavy than very familiar albums like Odelay and Guero, but I liked it. It showed some strong melody and had a consistent lower-key mood about it.

Never listened to this in full prior to today. A really good album that I will definitely revisit.

Beck’s voice seems to be part of the fabric of a lot of music I’ve enjoyed from the mid 90s through to now, whether that be his own stuff or guest vocals...and yet I’ve never listened to a full album of his. Enjoyed this...good music to listen to over dinner. Reminiscent of Nick Drake, The Beatles (sorry Ash), Pink Floyd and even Zero 7 in places. Solid album which I’ve added to my Spotify.

Half way through first track and all I can think is Radiohead "Fake Plastic Trees" and "No Surprises" combined with a bit of slide guitar. I thought the album was a nice listen, but it felt like background music to me. It's similar to the Springsteen album in that I don't really get the significance of it. It's not his biggest, best or first album, in fact other than some critical acclaim at the time it doesn't seem to have really influenced much at all. It's just because it's a revered artist basically. 6/10

Definitely not the best Beck album I've listened to. Some good tunes, but didn't seem as eclectic as others.

The sound is okay, but its just SO SLOW. It is not a great album to listen to the day after DST kicks in. I did not get through the whole album for fear of falling asleep. Its salvages a 2 star because it is not bad musically, I can tell the vocals and instrumentation is pretty good despite the sleep inducing overall product

I really like Beck’s “ Mellow Gold” album. And compared to that, he really nailed the Title here, but that’s about it. “Sea Change” is a sea change from that album. While I loved the guitars, keyboards, melodies and crazy lyrics from Mellow Gold, this album counters with a lot a benign dull. Nothing here to see or hear, please just move along.

Sea Change by Beck is an album I didn't see change all that much. At this point in Beck's career, I think people probably had a specific image of him being experimental/poppy and not so slideguitary, so maybe this album came as a surprise. However, this album reminded me most of his first album Stereopathetic Soulmanure, a few songs which you could mix into this album musically without effort. Once again, in the review for this album, the 1001 book prints some lines that make it sound like this album shouldn't be in the list > Certainly the lyrics lack a little bite (he rhymes "before" with "before" on "End Of The Day"), while the vocals range from tired to clinically dead.

Beautiful album.

This certainly isn't Beck's strongest album but I think it does it's job well. He was inspired to write this after him and his long time girlfriend split, and boy is this ever a breakup album. Every song is dripping with melancholy. Needed scuba gear as I was swimming through all these Beck tears. I really liked Maddie's comparison of this and Morning Phase as companion albums. To me, Morning Phase always felt like a hopeful ray of sun on your face to wake you up in the morning, and in contrast this album certainly feels more like the sun setting on a lovely day thats come to an abrupt end. I found that the orchestration on this album added some much needed power to his overly earnest songwriting. "Lost Cause," really stood out to me in this regard. It wasn't Beck's most inventive songwriting by any means, and seemed to rely on cliched lines and motifs. This song kind of summed up the rest of the album for me. He sounds hurt but uninspired. I feel that this album was strictly made for Beck to process his feelings and move on with his life. It feels inconsequential in Beck's discography to me but I'm sure to him it was a very important record to make.

Ehe der schrill-funkige Weird-Pop der „Midnight Vultures“ sein neon-bunten Schmetterlingsflügel ausbreiten konnte, brauchte es „Mutations“. Nach schmerzhafter Trennung von seiner langjährigen Freundin/Verlobten war ein Bedürfnis nach erneuter Introspektion, Bestandsaufnahme und Veränderung groß. „Sea Change“ war diese 2. Verpuppung, und strahlt dabei die weltenflüchtige Wärme eines Songwriter Albums der Siebziger aus; dezenter Elektronik-Flitter setzt leichte Akzente und hilft ein Gegengewicht zu halten zur meist nachvollziehbar melancholischen und dunkel orchestraler Grundstimmung. Es klingt so vertraut und wächst noch ein Stückchen über sich hinaus; dies wäre auch heute noch eine bemerkenswerte Neuerscheinung. Lobende 3.9

Muss erstmal rausfinden wer die Arrangements geschrieben hat - und wer ihm DAS angetan hat, was er da auf Albumlänge verarbeitet. Meine Güte, diese Opulenz! Dieses Schwelgen in Schwermut! Und dann auch wieder diese Kargheit und Reduktion, bei den Lyrics und selbst beim Orchester - denn hier ist ja kein Streicher und keine Slidegitarre zu viel eingesetzt. Huh, und bei Round The Bend weiß man gar nicht wohin mit sich, vor lauter Grim und Frost und Wärme und Panik und Lethargie, und die Sunday Sun schien auch schon mal freundlicher ... War dieser offenbar große Sea Change der Grund für Kurs auf den sicheren Hafen Scientology? Ich weiß es nicht (würde zeitlich aber passen). Was ich aber jetzt weiß: wie sich Umbruch im Hause Hansen anhört. Volle 4,4 dafür.

Fuck... this is a depressed Beck and it sucks all the fun out of what usually is a fun listen.

Highlights: The Golden Age, Paper Tiger, Little One This is a strong, but uncharacteristic offering from Beck, which normally you'd expect genre-stretching folk rock; Sea Change is a little more relaxed, letting Mr. Hanson stretch his legs a bit and dwell a little bit more on the details. Sandwiched between 1999's vivacious Midnight Vultures and the hand-bangin' Guero of 2005, 2002's Sea Change is a brisk 180° change in both directions...It's calm and melancholy, possibly because this was a fresh post-911 world. If Beck's mood swings make your head spin, buckle up, baby, you're gunna get plenty dizzy, because Beck is one of the most versatile musicians alive, and isn't afraid to take on new challenges.

The Golden Age is big space cowboy vibes. very much a low key breakup album, nice for zoning out but I didnt really get much out of it

Sea Change is not just a record, it's a mood. Which makes it a great album to throw on and listen to in whole.

I was not familiar with these songs from him, but I really enjoyed them!

Pretty solid throughout, just not something I always vibe with. "Guess I'm doing fine" and "Lost Cause" were standouts to me. Beck's voice sounded way different here than I was used to, and I liked the folk rock and western vibes at times. Better than a 3 for me, but I can't call this one a 4.

Den här är för dyster och deprimerande för min smak. Beck har andra mycket bättre skivor tycker jag. Detta album inspirerades ju av separationen från hans flickvän. Inget positivt album direkt.

This is really good. I was only familiar with Beck songs that are fairly popular, but haven't listened to any of his albums all the way through. Really mellow and thoughtful. 4 stars.

This was better than anticipated but an extremely tough finish. Like one long depressing break-up. Not something I would go back to but exceeded my low expectations going into it.

Quite a different version of Beck, with this album. It seems more serious, a more somber Beck. Not a bad thing, it shows a more emotional range and an ability to showcase his different side. Not my favorite Beck but he always shows a willingness to explore something different and this is just that : Beck but Different.

Love this record. And I love when Beck would just drop a rando new style on you out of nowhere. "Lost Cause" is just one of the best he's ever done.

Man what a beautiful album. The guitar playing is superb, Beck’s voice is on point and I love the lushness of the strings. The sadness is palpable here and I don’t know if this is an album that I can come back to often for that reason. But I do love this record. Favorite song: It’s All In Your Mind Least favorite song: Little One (I guess)

Skivan morning phase från 2014 är en av mina favoritskivor, som jag har på vinyl. Denna skiva anses vara föregångaren till morning phase då de har lite samma stuk med lugna låtar med orkestrala inslag. Den här skivan var också riktigt bra! Tycker nog ”Lost cause” är bäst. Fyra getingar av fem!

Beck is not a loser, baby. I like the dark acoustic landscapes a lot.

Bit miserable but ok. Forgettable

I much prefer my sad songs to not be so slow, which I know sounds silly. It was alright. I think the combination of his voice and the slowness of the songs got to me after a bit. Made it feel like it dragged on a bit. I also don’t like that it seems like he’s mumbling a bit. I don’t mind incomprehensible lyrics but this type of singing is not my cup of tea. All that being said, definitely not the worst album.

Liked it a lot, was expecting a lot more wierd stuff. But nope nice smooth album will listen again.

There’s nothing particularly wrong with it... I probably wouldn’t listen again. Unless I felt like listening to something really boring. Then I’d probably listen to it again. I actually gave up after track 9 and listened to Jazz Samba again instead. That was great.

Beck traded in his two turntables and a microphone for an acoustic guitar and an atmospheric sound, and it works. Melancholy was in in 2002, and this is among the best that era has to offer. Best track: Round the Bend
