A chill and calming album built for wasting away in your bed all day.
Chill vibes from indie
I’ll start by saying that Lost Cause is a perfect song. Its simple melody and glorious melancholy make it one of the best pieces of art from the ‘00’s. When this album came out, I recall critics losing their shit over it, but to my ears this project was simply a sadder, more desperate take on his very excellent 1998 album, Mutations. Both records strip back the glitchy studio experimentation and funk of Odelay and Midnite Vultures for simpler songs but on Sea Change, the gorgeous strings shine through brightly as a light in the deep deep dark. There’s no doubt that on this record Beck was experiencing a dark night of the soul after his long term relationship ended. I feel like this is a slow burn album. It’s message is crystal clear on first listen, and sonically, over time, it just seeps in deeper in a profound way as most people experience this level of heartbreak at some point in their lives, so this is a go-to album to weep and soothe to. I still prefer Mutations but this is a hugely honorable record in Beck’s catalog.
Intimate, elegant, great production…
This was way different from the Beck that I’m used to, but I really enjoyed it. Loved the calm vibes, and I want Beck to make more music like this. Need to listen to this a few more times to find my favorite parts, but on first listen I loved how different it was.
Love it. Sort of down tempo for Beck but still in my occasional rotation.
Lightly psychedelic, melancholy, and mostly acoustic. None of the tracks really stood out to me as amazing (though Lonesome Tears was solid), but I generally liked everything.
Beck goes Nick Drake, and he does it quite well.
I like Beck a lot. I haven’t heard all of his albums, but surely this is one of the best.
such a chill and sad album that mixes post-rock with indie singer-songwriter, "folk slacker", lo-fi, ambient, and so many other genres. Throughout it though, the mournful and ernest crooning of Beck shines through. He also takes certain elements on this album that might be common in other iterations of music like his and plays them through the extreme, such as the consistent climbing of notes throughout hte end of "Guess I'm Doing Fine". Per Spotify, this album was a post-breakup album that maintained his psychedelic influences while shifting hard into mournful tones that are clear throughout.
My favourite Beck - full on sad boy indie mode. I really, really, really get on board with this in a major way. The first three or four tracks in particular are five star worthy, and while it loses impetus a bit, it's a really lovely listen from top to bottom. Very nice.
Kinda spacey but kinda good. 3.5
Actually really good - B side a little more somber. But this is a really solid record. I have this odd view of Beck and don't think i've eveer truly appreciated the artistry. He's been rocking it forEVER. Wish I could give half stars because it's absolutely a 3.5. BUT i'll give it a 4 because I unexpectedly enjoyed it. Fav Tracks: Guess I'm doing Fine, Golden Age
High 4 Idk this just hit perfectly for me yesterday. Listened to it on a cold and calm evening. Beck’s soft, sad lyrics just washed over me. I liked that he was quiet and serious here, letting his deep bass voice shine.
Helps with feels
A sad back makes for a beautiful record, but also one that lasts a little bit too long in its tristesse. I listen to this regularly, but never in its entirety.
Slow jams a la Beck Soft, sonorous tones grace songs As he croons along
81/100. It’s an album that feels personal and raw, yet incredibly serene. A perfect companion for anyone looking to slow down and unwind.
The Golden Age 4/5
This is the first album I am intimately familiar with. I didn't love it when it first came out, but have come to appreciate more over time. I really loved his previous album "Midnight Vultures" and practically wore that CD out I listened to it so much. This album was so much of a departure I was disappointed at the time. Perhaps "Sea Change" wasn't just a clever name. In retrospect the whole album feels like an interlude between "Midnight Vultures" and "Guero." "End of the Day" was my favorite track back then and was the one I enjoyed the most during this listen as well.
Not looking forward to this one. Well I am pleasantly surprised. Very chill enjoyed it and would listen again. When I think of Beck it’s just that song loser and I don’t like that song. This was kind of awesome. I’m intrigued.
I really enjoyed this chill vibe. It was soothing, calm in its tonality, and pleasurable.
Prachtige arrangementen, paar echt goede nummers, maar af en toe een beetje veel van hetzelfde.
I think it’s somewhere between a 3 and 4 for me. I didn’t know if I’d like it. I like the general vibe but it’s more backgroundy than I expected. Didn’t realize I had started the album over and I heard paper tiger again. It’s a 3.5 rounded up.
Beck's Sea Change has often been compared to Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, both being seen as an artistic development in the wake of personal heartbreak. While I see the resemblance, I'm not sure the comparison does justice to either of these singular works of art. Sea Change is awash in the depths of emotion and loss and it consumes its listeners in waves of sound, plunging one deeper into the artist's journey of sorrow and reflection. If this album is your introduction to Beck, you're in for a number of surprises exploring his catalogue. At first, this can present as an acoustic singer/songwriter album because of the primacy of the acoustic guitar in the mix and Beck's sonorous delivery. But, these crucial foundations support walls of sound that wash over the listener, immersing one in the fulness of emotion. It seems slow and methodical until one is captured, rapt in an emotional and musical swirl. It's like Gordon Lightfoot meets Brian Wilson. Sea Change is definitely not a background music album but one that rewards attention and good headphones. An early classic of the 21st century.
I really enjoyed this album. Paper Tiger was especially interesting. Round the Bend was particularly moody, which I really liked - it felt very Nick Drake inspired.
Not my favorite Beck album but still a great early Beck album
Wonderful album. Loved how beautiful everything sounded.
Super mellow, easy listening
I enjoyed this new sound when the album first came out, a slower more acoustic sound.
it is very funny that even when beck drops the eccentricity & sampling and does a more straightforward & stripped down singer songwritery album it still blows all the contemporary clowns who built their careers around that style out of the water
So vibey! I loved this more than I thought I would.
I'm reaching 200 albums this week. That's a great achievement. "Sea Change" was a brilliant album. I loved the first half of it. Before listening to this album, the only song by Beck I heard was "Loser". 4 stars for "Sea Change."
Might be my favorite Beck album. Great, confessional songs with enough catchy pop elements to keep it lively.
Surprisingly better than I remembered...though I've never sat down and listened to the whole thing critically. It was rich and sad and weird.
Solid album, one or two times i found myself bored of the energy and instrumental but every other song kept me interested.
this was my first experience with Beck in a full album context, and while I knew going in that this was him in a more serious, contemplative mood than normal, I wasn't ready to be as moved as I was by a lot of these songs! when I saw Nigel Godrich handled production duties and read about this album's despondent break-up themes, that obviously made me think of Radiohead, but I came away from this feeling far more parallels between Beck and Nick Drake. of course, Beck and Godrich's sound is a lot more expansive owing to the higher production value, but the mellow acoustic vibe, the string arrangements, even Beck's singing, all brought albums like Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter to mind. the run from tracks 1-5 here is by far the strongest (that little keyboard melody on "Golden Age" is so perfect!), but I was also pretty blown away by "Round the Bend". on an album full of great string sections, that song probably has my favorite. it's the most haunting song on the entire album, and it really stood out for that reason. I'm excited to see what else Beck's discography has to offer; hopefully I can catch him in a better mood next time! strong 8/10.
After hearing Odelay all the way through for the first time recently, and not really enjoying it, I was a bit nervous. Thankfully this album was less irritating due to Beck not inundating the listener with annoying sound effects that was driving a neurodivergent person like me insane. I found myself enjoying this album much better, and really enjoying the more toned down, somber tone Beck was relaying through the music.
Love Beck. This album was quite a change for me when it came out. Didn't appreciate it much at the time, but it has grown on me over time. 4/5
I liked it, not as Much as his other album with the cool looking dog but it was fun. Turns out Beck is more than just a head in a jar
You wanna know something funny? Because it's been nearly 9 months since I got Guero for the album project, a child could have been conceived and born in between my first and second times listening to a Beck album. The child would've been born a bit prematurely, but they'd live, so I'll count it. Anyways, here's my second ever Beck album! I liked Guero well enough, but Sea Change is definitely an album that appeals to me more personally. The two albums are pretty different. This album goes in a much simpler direction, but that's not a bad thing. The writing in these songs isn't as abstract as the more typical Beck song, but it's not like it's dumbed down or anything. The lyrics still have depth to them, just in a clearer way. The sound is nice in both the instrumental and vocal fronts. The production is solid. The album definitely feels like a Nigel Godrich production, but it still stands out from other artists and bands he worked with like Radiohead. The songs are all pretty good. The tone is consistently solid. This is just a nice album. I really like it. Maybe the last Beck album on the list will be even better. Who knows? Strong 4/5.
Not my fav from Beck but still great. This album was a massive tone shift. He can do anything
I found this to be quite boring at first, but on second listen I enjoyed it a lot more.
This is the first time I've listened to this album since it came out 22 years ago. I thought it was awful when I first heard it. This wasn't the Beck I grew up with! 22 years later I really liked it. I didn't understand the maturity that an artist wants to go through. A different way of telling their stories and sharing their art. This is an album I would buy on vinyl if I saw it out in the wild and one of the first from the 1001 that I don't already own that I wish I did.
Fine album, a little surprise to be honest.
Wederom ideaal voor op een koude, regenachtige herfstdag. Ik kende enkel de cover van dit album en zelfs geen enkel nummer. Wijs album. Sad album wel, maar soms mag dat. 4.4
I was expecting something idiosyncratic in the vein of Becks earlier albums so I was surprised when I instead got a melancholy alt country album. Sad but beautiful. It also matched my november vibe perfectly.
I love this album and hearing it live at the Hollywood Bowl was amazing. Even in standard format the strings and instrumental backing are really lush and well thought out. For those who criticize this one, Beck didn't sacrifice any of his creativity here, this is a beautiful sonic achievement in all the best ways. Even if this isn't your vibe, it shows his incredible range and it really deserves to be played again (and again) because you just can't get it all in one listen. The songwriting, the lyrics, the swell, the layering, the minimal guitar playing, the whole combo, really impressive. No skips at all, really unique with each song serving a purpose, will always love this one. Easy 4.25 for me.
The quintessential Xennial breakup album, but admittedly not for everyone.
Melancholic and emotional without being sad, if that makes sense. I have not really listened to Beck before, but this is something that I really would have enjoyed in college. There's something, musically, that's keeping me from loving this album. I'm not 100% sure what it is, but it just doesn't resonate with me. It is very good, and a style/mood that I really enjoy, so I'll be saving it for another listen later. I do know that if it was more synthetic/produced, rather than live instruments, I would like it much less. Favorite Song(s): Guess I'm Doing Fine, Sunday Sun, Side of the Road
Lost Cause
This was really good, and not at all what i expected.
Good chill out album. 4/5
I started out waving my hand at in front of my eyes whilst saying “This is not the Beck you’re looking for”. “Where’s the upbeat, funky Beck I know and love?’l shouted to myself. Then I bade myself to “Slow down, listen, don’t be hasty, lay your expectations aside, be open, stop eating chocolate chips from the bag”. And I slowed down, settled into a ‘Morning Phase’ state of mind and got along with it all. And now, a sure sign of positive personal growth and resilience, I like both Becks
Music to listen to while you kick back in a warm bath, enjoying a bottle of wine, and just let the Beck-ness of it all wash over you. And then when you're nice and toasty, pop open a vein...
thought it would be shit as the list compiler clearly has a hardon for beck, but actually its a really nice album
Guess Im Doing Fine
Surprised. Loved it. Will listen again.
Loved it.
Really good. I had no idea there was such production and thought with Beck. Mellow and a good voice.
Definitely a mood album, all sad songs, I didn't dislike any just can't imagine listening to this album very often
Beck has some wonderful lyrics and great engineering skills, some of his later stuff is better.
I love this era of beck. Beautiful instrumentals mixed with his hauntingly calm voice.
★★★★½
Enjoyed it. I'm not a huge fan of latter-day Beck, but it was fun.
Not what I was expecting from Mr Sex Laws. I enjoyed listening to it. Probably not one that I will come back and choose - but it's a great album. I love the orchestral sounds and the way a lot of songs just sort of disintergrate. I'm rounding it up to 4.
Never heard this before. Not what I was expecting. Accessible, memorable, and heartfelt. A strong 4 stars.
I was ready to just dismiss this. In the past he has made more unique creative choices that worked. This feels a little more standard and subdued, but with great compositions. Not much to complain about just nothing pops out for me. A cohesive package of an album.
Much different, in a very good way, than I was expecting. More guitar, less electronica. Dinged it as the songs sound fairly similar which is understandable based on the influence on the album.
The mood I was hoping for. 4/5
Slower and more folky than I remember most Beck albums being. This one was a very easy listen and the beginning really was quite good. Started to taper off towards the end, could have been the music or could have been the mind numbing task I was doing at work. But anyways this was still a strong album. I wish I could go back and re-rate the other Beck albums because now listening to him more I think I have grown to appreciate his style much more.
Listened to this one a bunch going through my initial Radiohead phase, as the producer is the same and gives off a nice melancholy vibe. Definitely very different from the albums we've listened to so far as this is more of a mature sound, but I can still dig it. Standouts are Lonesome Tears, Lost Cause, and my personal favorite Little One.
I'll never be a huge Beck fan but this was a decent album.
Enjoyable, low-key, countryish, melancholy. Something I will return to.
Pleasant/chill album. A few songs that I have revisited since listening.
beck is pretty standard if you're looking for soft... is it rock or is it pop, i'm not too sure to be honest with you. this album is a shy away from what he usually puts out. originally i wasn't too into this album, but the more i listened to it, i actually kinda grew fond over the quiet, mostly acoustic and mildly ambient ditties. the wistful and sometimes indifferent energy that persists is likely due to the singer's breakup at the time.
Love Beck, great album but not my favorite of his either!
Really great album. I’m not really the biggest Beck fan, but this album is a bit of an outlier to his previous works. 4.5 stars.
I hadn't heard this particular Beck album before but this is probably my favourite. It's similar to Beck's other stuff but also slightly different,a bit more sad and introspective than his other stuff.
Liked the acoustic elements to this album, didn't like the more ethereal slow tracks like "Round the Bend". Favorite Songs were: 3. Guess I'm Doing Fine 11. Little One 7/10
That was a much more mellow and atmospheric album than I expected. I mainly knew Beck from Guero and Mellow Gold which are more uptempo and rocky. This was a really nice album with some very pretty moments. It did all blend together, but in a way that felt cohesive more than indistinct. Album cover: (B+)
For fans of zero 7 . An album for the late Saturday night /Early Sunday morning
I was expecting a mid album, but this one suprised me. I felt that the songs were all full of emotion (Eddie Vedder style vocals) and all fit onto this project. Although the length was a little long, Beck really changed up the formula and did it well.
Loved the flow. 4/5
If your knowledge of Beck is “Loser”, Sea Change will probably surprise you. It’s full of sad songs and dour misery reflecting the disintegration of Beck’s relationship. I rather liked most of it. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-sea-change-by-beck?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Very indie, good acoustic sound, mellow and the lyrics are very soft and gentle
It was very interesting and I liked some of the songs
Love Loser by Beck and was expecting similar vibes, but the album is much more mellow, which I surprisingly enjoyed. Great album, good vibes
It was sad man songs but good!
It is a little disappointment but it just because his previous works are heavier. I have felt sorry for this guy while listening the album. Sad Beck please dont come back.
I am very familiar with Beck’s fast-paced, wacky songs, such as Hotwax and Cellphone’s Dead - some of the most replayable songs I’ve ever encountered. But this is a step in the polar opposite direction. Sea Change is littered with shards of melancholia, a constant outpouring of grief and introspection. It is incredible to me that the man who built what is essentially his own genre with albums like Odelay and Midnite Vultures can pull such an emotional album off.
I wasn't initially vibing with this, but then it got me with "Guess I'm Doing Fine", the last couple of days have been emotionally volatile for me but this album really brought me back. Great lyrics, relatably sad but tinged with hope. What a stellar album! Favourite track: It's All In Your Mind.
It's definitely not what I expected. Sadder and closer to Radiohead's ballads. But it is very coherent.
Wow, this was good. I’m not very familiar with Beck, and this wasn’t really what I was expecting. I’m a sucker for this downbeat, sad kind of stuff. “Round the Bend” reminded me of Nick Drake’s Five Leaves Left (an album I regret not giving 5 stars). I loved the use of the strings. I’ll come back to this one for sure. Favorite tracks: Paper Tiger, Round the Bend

Paper Tiger
Loved it. Very pretty production and singing
Beck's pivot to singer/songwriter folk rock. In many ways his best work, mostly because he mellowed out on the quirky parts of his songwriting and just made genuinely beautiful songs of tenderness and vulnerability. There's a certain airiness that envelopes Beck's folk songs throughout much of the album, acting as a sort of cocoon. I name "Sea Change" evokes images of waves that wash over and then recede back into the large body of water, forever in flux. I think this accurately captures the thematic elements of the album and it's songs, as Beck contemplates a breakup and process of moving on. This resonates more than any other Beck album I've heard. Well done.
This album kinda rules. Beck kinda rules. Who would’ve thought? I don’t care what the internet says, Beck is pretty great.
Nice
8/10 In a right mood and suitable circumstances it can be 10.
There is some true beauty here. Beautiful melodies, chord progressions, words and, indeed, production. I love how it sits somewhere amongst psychedelia, blues, prog rock, chill-out 90s and Chris Cornell, but remains its own thing. At this point, I should admit that this is the first Beck I've heard, and I'm well overdue a catch-up with his older stuff. I shall atone. I really liked this.
Mellow. Just what was needed on a fraught Monday. Round the Bend was my favourite, probably because of the Nick Drake/River Man echoes.
Although the lyrics and overall sound can be rather sad, I found the album to be rather calm and peaceful to listen to.
Hell yeah, start it off with some jangly-ass acoustic guitar why don't ya. Boo, no jangly guitar in the second song. I will stop doing a play-by-play; I apologise, I have been drinking. I really liked it.
Tranquilo. Bonito.
listened to the whole thing again yesterday - classic album - almost all the songs are great - i saw him on this tour in salt lake w/ the flaming lips opening and as his backing band and the dude who did the art for punch drunk love as the video art background and the whole thing was a sublime experience
Tranquilo. Bonito.
Beck has a lot of sides. It's always lots of fun to listen to him being irreverent, and mashing genres into each other. But the non-ironic Beck albums are the ones that really stick. And Sea Change is one of those albums. These are story songs. And the story is that Beck is sad. The instrumentation is live. The album is free of samples, drum machines, or other forms of programming. The songs are mostly downbeat; and Beck's voice is earnest, and forward in the mix. Beck has made a lot of great albums. But for better or worse, some of them sound like products of their time. Sea Change remains timeless, and stands as the Beck album that holds up best to repeated listening.
4/5
To be totally honest, i haven't actually heard any of this album apart from The Golden Age, as a Flaming Lips cover. The album is good, maybe Very Good, but many of the tracks are just a bit same-y, in a navel-gazing, post-break-up way. I'll listen again, but I'm just not "grabbed" by this.
I'm not very familiar with Beck, but I enjoyed this album, a sort of mellow cozy album to play on dreary afternoons when you're feeling dreary as well. He's a good songwriter and his voice works with his music. I'm not sure how much of this album will stick with me, but i wouldn't mind hearing it again.
Can’t believe that Beck invented sadness.
I love beck and this a a great album 8/10
Not a happy dude on this album. Some great tracks, but somewhat slow.
Beck asks the brave question: "What if Radiohead was actually just my head stretched out really wide". This should have sucked major ultra-cock, but it's actually really good. I know this guy from singing about chimpanzees, what do you mean that this is a completely sincere heartbreak album.
I remember how big the hype was around this album was when it came out. Beck makes a hard pivot from the sound of his previous albums focused on sample driven, alt rock, pseudo psychedelia, funk rock, hip hop and disco to a lush, acoustic driven, heartfelt album of folk rock perfection. Check out Paper Tiger, Guess I'm Doing Fine, Lost Cause, Round The Bend and Sunday Sun
A very nice album to listen to!
So chill that I zoned out and forgot what I was doing a couple of times
I like Beck but I hadn't really given this album much attention. Funnily enough it also came up on a list I saw recently about the saddest albums. It's definitely sad, but also hopeful with some wonderful sweeping instrumentation. I'll absolutely come back to this one again in the future.
Kind of a folksy, Beck-ish, Sgt Peppers. Great listen
I kind of prefer goofy funky Beck to sad sack Beck, but I can’t deny this has a Lee Hazelwood hazy beauty to it.
I like Beck and I liked this.
To be in the right frame of mind to listen to lost cause. Beautiful album.
Beck was an artist I really enjoyed in the '90s when I was a teenager. I jumped on the bandwagon when "Mellow Gold & Odelay" came out. Shortly after, I moved on to edgier music like electronic, goth, and industrial, and Beck was no longer cool to me. I remember this album being promoted everywhere, but when someone told me it was a folk album, I thought, "BBBAAAARRRRFFFF!" and never gave him the time of day. About four years ago, I finally opened my heart to Beck again and realized he had done some pretty decent albums over the years. I listened to "Sea Change" for the first time about a month ago with my wife, and we really enjoyed it. Listening to it again, there's nothing particularly groundbreaking about it, but it's just a nice, calm album to chill out to.
Day193 - first of all beck is a genius. sea change is definitely more relaxed than most of his albums but it’s amazing how he can keep re-inventing himself
alltaf geggjuð
Mellow and moody. This feels like a different kind of Beck than what I was first introduced to in the 90's. Much more of an introspective turn. The production is fantastic.
Sad but it fit my mood when I was listening so for that it gets more stars.
er scho scientology aber huuuere schöni sounds singt huere cool. golden age fangt seeeehr guet es album ah. paper tiger het soo geils arrangement de bass goht dumm d striicher sind riichtig geil. scheisse ich bin musigkritiker. lonesome tears isch au huuuere schön fuck lost cause au?? chli simpler aber glöggli und so mega cuuute. schluss von dem tag au huuuere geil. sini stimm isch mit de ziit no viel ha nöd zu allem notize gmacht aber huii sehr schön alles. znd bi round the bend isch de kontrabass huuere geil. already dead au huuere trurig und schön und aah. sini stimm immernonig miis aber d songs sind super. bi sunday sun machter so chli de creed stuff aber isch cool.
love beck, this album just added to them
Listened to this before. Gas 9/10
That was surprising
listened to again such a great artistic album
If I listened to this for the first time at 2 AM, it would've been the easiest 5 I could've given. Still really solid though.
One of his best
I've rated a couple Beck albums already and as far as I remember I highly recommended them. He is an unique artist with interesting ideas and concepts and isn't afraid to experiment and take his music to a different level. Sea Change (to me), is a much more traditional album in the sense that it isn't bizarre or strange, but instead it's mellower, almost a country, Americana pop sound in parts and is very easy to listen to. Because of that, I don't feel it stands out as unique or essential, don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable listen and I like a lot of the songs, but this is Beck. Maybe I expected more, but it's solid nonetheless and still much preferred than most of the music released during the same era.
At The End of the Day, It’s All In Your Mind. This album is not a Lost Cause. It’s good!
Thoroughly enjoyed this!
sad banger after sad banger
First time I heard this when it came out and wasnt a fan, but over time I've grown to like this mellower side of Beck. Listening to it today, I still do.
Fantastic. Tapers a bit in the tail-end but it's such a great break-up album on the whole.
Tranquilo. Bonito.
4.5
Cruisy listening but a bit too melancholy to do all day!
i’ve always liked Beck ever since i heard him cover a Carpenters song for Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind(which isn’t on streaming for some reason) but i’ve never really given him a full chance until now. i understand why people talk about his unique relationship with Radiohead so much, he was doing stuff on this album that they wouldn’t try until almost 10 years later. he brings a similar vibe and energy to them, but in a indie rock/folk type of way. i’m really glad i gave him a shot because of the 1,001 albums, i’ll definitely be coming back
Some songs were noise, others were great
Big album for me when it came out. Incredible marriage of songwriting and production.
Good album. Listened to it already for /mu/ list but it's a good time. I like how he can make albums in so many different styles and they tend to be at least good, if not great. 3.5/5
That’s the way you do it. B+
The summary says “themes of heartbreak, desolation, solitude, and loneliness”… well it’s certainly palpable, not only in the lyrics and vocal performance, but in the dissonance throughout. Great production and balance. I remember Beck from back in the day, but didn’t know any of this album. 3.5/4
Beautiful but melancholy album. Wouldn't listen to it all the time, but it is very good. Standout tracks Lonesome Tears, Round the bend.
Beck was an artist I really enjoyed in the '90s when I was a teenager. I jumped on the bandwagon when "Mellow Gold & Odelay" came out. Listening to it again, there's nothing particularly groundbreaking about it, but it's just a nice, calm album to chill out to. So I went from barfing to accepting.
I'll never forget my high school shop teacher stopping class to announce that this album was a must listen. This was roughly 2004. I agree with Mr. perry
I was suprised I liked this so much
Not what I was expecting... sad, moody songs. I enjoyed it though. 4/5
It's remarkable, when you consider Beck's career prior to this album, that he was essentially able to write a soundtrack to a Paul Thomas Anderson movie that doesn't exist.
Beautiful and melancholy, but too one-note to be truly great
I wasn't clicking with this album at first, but when track 3 started, I knew this album was going to be a great one.
I’m at a 4. It’s a really good album, don’t get me wrong, and maybe on another day, it could totally be a 5, but much like Beck’s relationship seemed to wear him down into making this album, I think Beck kinda wore me down over the course of it. It’s just a little too long, and I think it touches on some of its themes a bit too often; I’m not opposed to the fact that this is 12 tracks and 52 minutes or whatever, but as an album experience, it just feels a bit cramped around the middle with some songs that he wasn’t willing to cut (for likely good reasons, mind you), but they don’t translate as conducively to the album experience for a listener. Instrumentation and lyrics here are fantastic, and in terms of the imagery and the feelings this album is meant to evoke, they do their jobs brilliantly – the swirling instrumental pieces that end a lot of these tracks are beautifully crafted. I just think the album’s biggest problem is being a little too bloated, and to be quite frank, a lack of true levity. There’s not really a point where anything truly brightens up here, and that lack of a release of tension just sort of hangs a cloud on the album that feels unresolved. I’m sure it more closely resembles reality, and it’s probably consistent with how Beck felt at the time, but I just think it wore me down to not get at least one happy-go-lucky song. I’m still rather pleased with the album though. I might just be nitpicking at it – it’s a really good album, it’s a strong listen, and it probably hits harder in the light of an actual breakup. I feel good with a 4, and I do think it deserves to be on the list.
4/5
Beck very much influenced by Nick Drake on this one.
I know Beck from Mellow Gold and Odelay, but had never heard this. Quite the change from what I was expecting. Very interesting listen, and really enjoyed a mellower, more introspective Beck. Although, I would have maybe liked a little more variety - with the exception of a few parts, it’s a little too low key for me. If I want low key, I feel like I’ll generally go elsewhere. Still, though, very solid effort that I’ll come back to at some point.
Да, звучит неплохо. Приятная грустная музыка. Это где-то 3.6 . Пусть будет 4. Но я долго себя уговаривал поставить 4. Все-таки блекловат Beck.
Emotions for emotion sake. I bought.
It’s a slow and somber album. I actually thought that if this were somebody I’d never heard of it had no expectations, I might find it a bit too dreary. But, it’s Beck! For some reason, that meant more to me on this one. I listen to it twice while I was working. I like the artistry. Back reminds me of Ben Folds; extremely talented in spite of limited vocal capabilities.
Orchestral bits, forgot how much I like Beck
me gusto mucho, bastante mellow y letras románticas que tiraban pa letras kinda cortavenas, me gusto buco buco pero puede llegar a ser monotono, le doy un 7/10
Beck in baroque folk mode, an album about breaking up that’s sounds more haunting than the singer feels. An atmospheric album and one of his best.
Nearly ten years on from hits like Loser and Devil's haircut, this is a somewhat different sound. More laid-back, heavy synth chords and a melancholy voice matching the feel of the lyrics. Stand out track Lost Cause. 4/5
4/5
Sad and boring but good if you’re sad.
Took me half the album to get my head around what I was listening to but I liked it by the end
A very pleasant album. I only knew Beck from the Devil's Haircut / Loser type stuff, so this was a nice gear change, and much more my groove. Its not one of my most favourite albums, but I would not be surprised if I listened to it again.
Very nicely captures the spirit of loneliness and depression. Really resonated with me.
Beck plumbs the troubled waters of romantic heartbreak, ultimately discovering poignant treasures in its gloomy depths.
It’s really an album of three halves. The first half is beautiful! Stunning! The second half starts to drag a touch but still lovely. The third half got a bit boring. But all the same lovely. So one beautiful half and 2 lovely halves. 3.6
The one man army, he can write and sing verrrry well, I think all of his albums have held up great over the years. 3.5
Forgot how moody this album is. I still dig it but need time between listens.
Solid!
This was really pretty. Not my favorite Beck. But genuinely, very good. Much more interesting than expected.
This is a good, low-key album to listen to while walking around looking at spring foliage.
This isn't getting any lower than a four I loooooove the vibe, i looooove the groove of it all. So beautiful. I wouldn't say that specific tracks stand out, because it all feels like one 52 minute piece of music. I love the product, the instrumentation, how warm it sounds, haunting at times, just a really good solid album I would say its a 4 because although its all one neat beautiful piece of music, i feel like its just missing two stand out tracks to take it to another level. I would place it below E-pro and i have a very soft spot for HyperSpace, but i think its better than Colors, even if it doesnt have a stand out few singles. Beautiful - High 4 baby
An utterly devastating album, a soother through multiple heartbreaks plus some excellent Gainsbourg homages on Paper Tiger. One of the finer records from Mr Hansen’s career
A real pleasure to revisit. I wasn't into it when it came out but a wonderful album.
4.0
This is a very mellow Beck, but still good. Some songs have a bit of an alt-country rock feel à la Jayhawks and some are more soundtrack oriented. In the morning sun, this was 3⭐️, but in the cloudy evening with a glass of wine a solid 4⭐️.
I've heard Beck here and there before, and this will make the first full album I sit down for him. It's a folk rock album where he croons along to his guitar playing and accompanying strings, with a very melancholic tone as he wrote these songs after he ended a nine-year relationship with his fiancee. The album is pretty well done, even if it goes longer than it should and won't be everyone's cup of tea. Give it a shot.
Great atmospheric slow songs.
A wonderful lyricist and good musical technician. I've always got time for a little Beck. Maybe not every day (I don't want to get too depressed), but sprinkle him in here and there as part of a complete diet.
back to back Beck! Though I prefer Odelay better then this one... actually prefer most of Beck's albums over this one. Always seemed strange that "sea change" seemed to be favored by the critics but my least favorite.
Really chill, enjoyable
I'm having a hard time rating this one. Objectively, it is good, but absolutely not my cup of tea. I will never be listening to it again
Great album, Beck almost never misses, and this is a great, early example when he could still come out of left field and shock you with something totally unexpected. Very introspective album, sad songs that anybody going through a difficult time in a relationship can identify with.
This is the most 3.5 4 I have given so far. I saw Beck in concert earlier this year and it was bombastic and fun and exciting and I was unfamiliar with his music. I then got to listening to this record which was a complete 180 of the sound I heard from a much older beck. This album was made after a hard breakup for him and it shows. It is radiohead Carseat headrest and pink floyd mixed to create this beautiful symphony of sounds and ideas. These are songs that feel like you are floating in space but they are so slow and sad and getting myself to that space to appreciate the artist was difficult cause I dont feel sad right now. I loved this and the album cover is very beautiful as well Round the bend has a beautiful siren voice in the background which is amazing feels like you are in space and you hear a call out to you. Lonesome tears is such a heartbreaking song. I can just see the influence this had on the likes of Tame Impala. I like this alot and yes I did cry
This was not what I expected from Beck but I thought the album was really beautiful, honestly.
Beautifully sad and downtempo, best track Lost Cause.
4/5
A terrific songwriter for the times. Solid music.
I am notoriously into sad music, but oh my this was a lot even for me. I guess he broke up with his long term girlfriend right before he wrote this, and this man is clearly not ok. "Guess I'm Doing Fine", "Lonesome Tears", "Lost Cause", "Already Dead", it's a lot. But potentially on brand for me, it's very good. You definitely want to be in a certain mood for this (which I'm really not right now), but he's clearly very talented, the lyrics are crushing, and it's musically interesting despite being a bit of a slow burn. I haven't really listened to any Beck at all (other than "Loser" of course), but I guess this album is quite different from the rest of his music. Professional reviews for this seem to be a little all over the place, which kind of makes sense if it's a lot different than his usual stuff (and probably because it's so sad too). I thought it was good, and I hope I don't feel like I need to listen to it anytime soon. Favorite song: Lost Cause Other: The Golden Age, Paper Tiger, Guess I'm Doing Fine, Lonesome Tears, Round The Bend 3/29/24
I quite liked this album. I was not familiar with Beck's music other than his mainstream hit 'Loser' and his more recent music which I found too experimental for my taste in the early aughts. This album reminded me a bit of Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder which I love. I am going to revisit his whole discography as a result of this
a lush bittersweet mournful vibe
Sad, but good enough
Favourites- golden age, paper tiger, guess I’m doing fine. 3-4
Good album
For evenings when you want yo reflect with a soft/ romantic music
pretty vibey
Good mellow album
I’ve listened to Beck’s Odelay as part of this project but didn't find it particularly noteworthy, though I can now say with certainty that beck has quite the range as a musician. Sea Change, however, stands out way more to me. It has such a chill, folk-y vibe. The listener is taken through Beck’s somber emotions while he deals with the ending of a long-term relationship. His heartbreak led to a beautiful album where his heart was bared. In a way, I find similarities between Beck and Lana Del Rey--which is not a comparison most people make, I’d wager. Their voices aren't alike, but with the bare bones style and their kind of lyrics--it's there!
Very close to perfect
Excellent album. A very introspective side of Beck. It shows his versatility as a songwriter and his ability to blend many musical genres. This one has a more folksy sound with the lyrics dealing with the loss of a relationship and loneliness. You may need to be in the proper mood for this one, I think it is grey rainy-day music. Great listen.
I was actually positively surprised by this one. Had no expectations, only having heard Loser before. This album consists of sad songs, many of which also found their way to my sad song list. All in all a solid pop album with good production. Two things drag the album a little down. Firstly, it’s about 10-15 minutes too long. It’s hard to take so much sadness in one sitting. Secondly, I’m annoyed by his vocal style on some of the songs. Most notably on Sunday Sun, which could have been on of the highlights, and the Paper Tiger. Lonesome Tears is my favourite and is, except for Sunday Sun, the most dynamic song
Classic album. Beck is showing his great talents on every song. 4 stars.
Gets a little formulaic, but the production is concise, the arrangements are exquisite, and, most importantly, Beck's change to a starker, more emotive sound feels natural and engaging.
Sad beck is the best beck
honestly pleasantly surprised but i dont expect much from beck
I forgot how gorgeous this album is - my most listened Beck song in recent years has been "Debra" so this was a nice reminder of what else he can bring to the table.
I love Beck, but this is not my favorite by him. Solid, but a bit boring and pretty sad.
The Golden Age - 9/10 Paper Tiger - 9/10 Guess I'm Doing Fine - 8/10 Lonesome Tears - 8/10 Lost Cause - 8/10 End of the Day - 9/10 It's All in Your Mind - 8/10 Round the Bend - 8/10 Already Dead - 7.5/10 Sunday Sun - 8.5/10 Little One - 8.5/10 Side of the Road - 8/10 TOTAL - 99.5/120
A Sad Bastard classic
Entspanntes Album
Moody sensitive Beck >> Rowdy frat boy Beck
I appreciate the simplicity of the song structure. Not trying to do too much, but beautifully recorded and captured. I don’t LOVE Beck, but sometimes I’m in a Beck mood. And this is the version of Beck I like best. Simple and resonant.
Beautiful, lush instrumentation, thoughtful lyrics. Lost a star because it was all just a bit too slow for me to listen to again.
devastating break up record. maybe one of the best ever. 4.5
February 12, 2024 HL: “The Golden Age”, “Lonesome Tears”, “Round the Bend”, “Sunday Sun”, “It’s All in Your Mind” Despite the overall bleakness, the Beatlesque and Laurel Canyon touches are more than enough to rescue this from mere sadness n’ gloom. Love the strings in such songs as “Round the Bend”. Beck and Nigel Godrich are a combination I didn’t know I needed to hear.
Achey and beautiful.
Loved the sounds, could’ve used some more variation.
sweet
Atmospheric, nice
I'm surprised I liked this one as much as I did, as it was very quiet compared to what I usually like. Things felt cool and casual while still being fun.
Carefully crafted, requires a quiet space for listening
Beautiful mournful melodies and pensive lyrics paired with western acoustic guitar and lush strings. Beck perfectly encompasses all the angst we collectively felt in the 2000’s, without ever raising his voice. Excuse me, I have to peer out of my bedroom window and wonder if she could possibly love me. Stand out tracks include “The Golden Age”, “Lost Cause”, “Already Dead”, and “Side of the Road”.
Forgot how much I used to listen and like this album. Only critique is it could use some more variety.
Initially was not a fan. Realized the error of my ways.
So sad and melancholy...I guess he was sad as he wrote with despair...it comes across in the sound....but interesting mix of sorrow and pain with some good instrumentals. Never really listened to him before..will check out other albums.
I generally like Beck, hadn't heard this record. It's good and warrants further listening.
Mellow, introspective album from Beck -- almost like he'd been listening to a lot of Ryan Adams before he wrote it. Cool melodies and well-written lyrics really evoke the sense of loss and heartbreak. I liked this record quite a bit -- it's very different from the Beck of Odelay -- but it's a little too relentlessly down tempo, which makes the songs kind of blend together. Lost Cause sticks out as a solid song but the rest of the record is more of one solid mood rather than individual tunes that are memorable on their own.
I hadn't heard this whole album before, just a song or two. It's an easy listen, really good for a rainy or mellow day, and it's got some vague Pink Floyd vibes. It wasn't super memorable for me, but I'd put it on in the background and not be unhappy it was on!
Damn, I really enjoyed this but it also made me feel pretty depressed. If your goal for listeners was to bring us in on the breakup pain you were feeling at the time, Beck...mission accomplished. lol The melancholy across the span of Sea Change is palpable -- it's as if Nick Drake is being channeled by Beck here. The first part of the album is a bit better than the second IMO, but I enjoyed this listen and it made me appreciate Beck's musicianship even more. Standouts: The Golden Age, Paper Tiger, Guess I'm Doing Fine, Lost Cause, Already Dead, Sunday Sun
Enjoyed: the golden age I have mixed feelings about Beck's "lazy" vocals usually. I enjoyed the instrumentals in this album and the vocals in a lot of the tracks. A nice melancholy album, would listen again. 4*
acoustic emo with polished production; an album after my own heart
I had no idea that Beck could make an album like this. It completely escaped me! I really like a lot of his stuff, very quirky and creative. The opener of this was brilliant - took me completely by surprise. Track 2 had fantastic orchestration and arrangements, and then track 3 had the right amount of country and western slide guitar action for it not to be vomit inducing country and western. I could play those first 3 tracks on repeat - just great. The rest of the album didn’t quite hit those heights but as with all Beck’s stuff it was a really interesting listen. The quirkyness dialled down and replaced with awesome melancholy and melody. If The Doris ever leaves me, I’ll reach for this album - it would be perfect. Not that I want to be heartbroken of course, but this might, just might, make it worthwhile 🤣. A solid 4 rating - maybe will grow into a 5 with more listens.
Great album. Loved it.
Ok
Good on a very slow and sad day
Beautiful! Very moving. Depressing as f--k, but lovely
Had never really listened/tuned in to Beck before. This time I went through the album and was pleasantly surprised. I liked it. Particular tracks... Golden Age Paper Tiger Lonesome Tears (excellent) Lost Cause Round The Bend Sunday Sun A welcome 4 star
Slower but very emotional. Some great dynamic sounds and cool buildups keep most of the songs interesting.
Un poquito demasiado sad para mi
A very Beck album. Not as dark and intense as Mutations but playful and thoughtful. You just cannot escape the Serge Gainsbourg reference and musical soundscape on paper tiger. This is a great listen.
Although I know Beck has a long discography, I kind of dismissed him as a One hit wonder after hearing Loser 400 million times in college. I really enjoyed this reintroduction. A bit country tinged, very chill. I will def listed more. Love Lost Cause
This is my third Beck album, and I have disliked the two previous. This, however, is beautiful. The noise experimentation works like a charm, surrounding a gifted singer-songwriter.
Loved how the whole album was engineered. One track reminded me a lot of Nick Drake.
Chill, a bit sad, great arrangements and such
Man… Anyone who says that Elliott Smith is too depressing (which I think people only say because he committed suicide) has clearly never heard this album. I’ve often felt that Beck is one of the very few musicians/bands that I’ve consistently liked throughout my life, regardless of what else I’m into at any given time. Anyway, this is really good. I appreciate it for what it is, which is Beck’s first real attempt at an album without a bunch of dancey sample-ridden tracks. “Lost Cause” has long been one of my favorites of his. So I want to give this a 5 but I don’t know if I can handle this again in one listen. It’s devastating. Like Blood on the Tracks it’s probably one of the best breakup albums. But unlike BotT, it’s not going to go in regular rotation.
Nice, reminds me of Neil Young back in his younger days. Enjoyed his use of electronics for sonic effect.
Maybe my second favorite Beck album?
I always liked Beck's voice. It's got a nice quality that really shows on this album. And it's good to see an artist like this that doesn't just make the same record over and over again. And while this one doesn't have some of the grit that his earlier records do, I think it holds up very well. Arrangements are good, vocals are great, production is top notch. Lost Cause has always been one of my favorite songs of his. I also really like The Golden Age, End of the Day, Already Dead, and Sunday Sun. A super chill album to throw on and enjoy a cocktail in the evening. I think this is one that gives a better experience listening to it as a whole rather than just a random song here and there.
прям 4+++++ алкоальбом дешевое вино на выпускном (так чувствую)
Groovy
Really chill
Hmm I've always heard about Beck and his musical talents. To be honest, it is not a bad album by any means and there is no doubt that he is talented. Not an album I probably would listen to over and over but I did enjoy it nonetheless. Deep and poetic.
I enjoyed this more than expected. Perfect for a quiet day with a cozy blanket & a good book. Maybe some rain.
for me "morning phase" is the better album
Some of the best music ever made, poured from a broken heart.
8/10. Pleasant to listen to
I really enjoyed this album, despite it having many qualities that I have disparaged other albums for on this list. I think Beck is a good songwriter and his skills are showcased here on a project that isn’t overflowing with canned drum beats. Almost got George Harrison vibes, though not quite. 8/10
For me, this is probably Beck's best album. Love it
Mellow, spacey, Beck music. Good. 3.5 stars
Very haunting and beautiful album. No pop hits here, however "Sunday Sun" was covered by a band called The Cinematics and that version is KILLER. This Beck album is a bit of a downer...
Absolutely fucking gorgeous. 4.5/5
I enjoyed this. I go to Beck for upbeat fun, but this shows a matured personality
I think this is good. It's chill and melancholy but because I heard Morning Phase first, this just seems like a precursor or rough draft of that.
I'm giving this album 4 stars based on one song. Lost cause is a masterpiece.
Smooth, mellow creativity, but sad ballads in this album, which reflects his breakup with his girlfriend. Not a particular favorite of mine, but still a good work from Beck.
3.5/5
I really like this album a lot. Some of the songs kind of sound alike but to me this is better than his usual sound
From memory alone I'd have said this album has some sublime moments (Lost Cause) and some exquisite string arrangements (Paper Tiger, the ever-ascending coda of Lonesome Tears), but doesn't sustain that quality and becomes kinda dull by the end. Still mostly true, but listening again on a frosty morning I realised there are some great tracks on the second half too (particularly Sunday Sun and Little One), and at any rate the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The forlorn and languid but vaguely ominous tone of these songs is strangely hypnotising. 3.5 / 4
I really liked this one!
i’m a beck fan, a beck stan even… i love this album he really hit his peak for a long time !! i don’t really care for his most recent stuff but Sea Change, it’s a classic, it’s fitting of it’s time and even surpasses what so many other people were putting out in 2002. there’s a lot of different vibes created in this album, the spooky indie experimental that has followed him since his beginning is most apparent in “lonesome tears” and feels like the most beck song of this album. “Guess i’m doing fine” is my fav song on the album, it reminds me of driving with my mom, as does “already dead”! CUTE! i also love “round the bend” it’s very porcupine tree/steven wilson vibes!! (CHECK THEM OUT SO GOOD MODERN PROG) “side of the road” has never hit like it’s doing today, wow, im transported to paris, texas!!!! this album follows a similar vibe throughout but each song takes its own distinct adventure outside of that before coming back to base. love beck, love sea change! 4/5
You cannot pigeon-hole Beck. I have this cd but haven’t played it in years. It’s great. The sound superb. It creates such atmosphere for him to perform in. His voice terrific - a bit Nick Drake, but always perfect, and never always the same. The melodies are sometimes stunning. He’s singer-songwriting a lot. But he’s so good at everything. Lonesome Tears is great. The Cobainish Little One is a real winner. Bt there are no bad songs here. This is such a pleasure to enjoy.
What if Neil Young, but Radiohead? Solid, but you need to be in this mood. But so what?
I enjoyed the mood on this one today. It kinda stays the same mood the whole time. This one is pretty good to put you in a trance Chill indie with some nice flourishes
Kinds sounds alittle like radiohead but acoustic, very much enjoyed this album
I enjoyed this a lot. Nice mood album, not sure if there were any stand out tracks
Beck is amazing but this album is a little sleepy for me.
I really liked this - never heard it before - sounds like Scott walker who I love. Probably one of my favourites so far
I like Beck but there are so many of his albums I haven't listened to. This one is mature and manages to sound pared-back and lush at the same time. He is a talented songwriter and performer - love the vocal melodies and sometimes wonky, multi-layered acoustic guitar parts the most.
4,5
i like!! cute
Mood
Enjoyable solo singer songwriter stuff with a guitar. The slow ballads are convincing with a slight country vibe. The entire album is low-energy, which I didn't love, but he hits what he's going for. This is perfect music for an afternoon bike ride in the summer.
