Reviews (page 8 of 13)

Typically languid Beck fare but he generally does it well. Doesn’t have the “pop” like some of his other work. 3.5

This was unmemorable and fine. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5

I am only familiar with a couple of Beck albums, neither of which really sounded like this. Sea Change indeed. Ultimately, I didn’t find this one particularly exceptional

Not as good as odelay. Very low key, needs an upbeat song or two.

Didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, based on what I’ve heard from beck before, not bad tho

Beautiful, peaceful music, ideal for a relaxing train journey

Musica molt chil.

Typical chill Beck

I bought it at the time and enjoyed it, but a bit meh now

Better than I thought it would be.

Some really great and well written songs but this album drags

it's decent, i like the sound of this album.

Beck has no edge on sea change but he’s riding sad boy wave pretty well.

Hey maybe I just listened to it in a good mood, but it was better than the other shit. OK, Beck. Good work I liked “Paper Tiger.”

Mellow. Slightly monotonous

i normally enjoy beck's music from what i've heard but i didn't really jibe with this one. it has its moments, but mostly it is very subdued and acoustic, and quite frankly, a bit boring for my taste. i'm used to beck being very progressive with his production and this feels very regressive to me. it's not bad, but i didn't find it very interesting, and quite frankly, a little disappointing.

Pretty interesting ngl. Nothing spectacular

Not the biggest fan. The instrumentation and production was very well done and bumped it up to 3 stars for me, but didn’t really enjoy the voice or the lyrics much.

It was just inoffensive background noise, nothing special

Boring background music. His voice is alright but this could use something.

This was not what I was expecting from a Beck album and it wasn’t bad, but from start to finish the vibes/sound didn’t change much. I feel like it’s a three for now, but it might grow on me with future listens.

Cool. But didnt quite grip me.

A lot of nice moments and interesting chord progressions, equally a lot of slow-burn inert atmos stuff, which eh

Nice album

Beck's sad cowboy album? Technically solid, like a lot of Beck's stuff, but this one didn't grab me has hard as his other albums.

mellow and sweet

Nice listening but to slow for me.

Another early train ride album, this time in Paris. Definitely confused between air and beck. Good but nothing really stood out

I mean, it’s Beck doing Nick Drake, but not doing it as well as Nick Drake does Nick Drake. It’s introspective and a little boring at times. Not one of his more appealing works for me.

It was good but didn't impress me.

I guess this album demonstrates that Beck is a musical chameleon. When it comes to his slow music, I prefer Morning Phase album, however this one is perfect adequate for afternoon napping. Favorite Song: Lost Cause

I was previously familiar with Beck but not with this album. Like his other material, this is alt/indie rock which takes influences from electronic and other genres. This album seems to have a little more country influence than his other albums that I've heard. I liked it and would listen again.

like the vibes

Sad. Depressing. But amazing!

I appreciate it. But in comparison with Blood In The Tracks and other break-up albums, it lacks to me some of that emotional veracity, that emotional resonance. It's too reflective.

Sorry about your failed relationship and props to you for the introspection and willingness to change style, but this is all a little wispy and soft around the edges for me.

Bisschen langweilig, aber ganz gut

Decent.

Very slow, can see this being good to listen to in a coffee shop

Overall pretty decent, although it could all be one long track. The little bits of silence throughout the album tipped me off that apparently one song ended and a new, different song was beginning. Without those, I'd be lost

OK, relaxing.

Another album I haven’t listened to for 20 odd years. Pretty nice but a bit uneventful. I did save Lost Cause and Paper Tiger to my playlists.

pretty chill, early 2000s indie-alt vibes 6/10 enjoyed it but not sure if anything stood out for me to come back to

Not my favorite Beck

Listened to Guero a few weeks ago, and gave it 4 stars. So I have pretty high expectations for this one. The opener The Golden Age is solid, if a little repetitive. The song doesn't really go anywhere, apart from the chorus having a couple of distinctive high backing vocals. But the guitar and slow tempo are pleasant. A fresh, clean sound. Where Beck really comes to life is in the next track, Paper Tiger. The strings strike that perfect balance of beautiful and mysterious (even slightly menacing) that I came to love in some of Radiohead's tracks off A Moon Shaped Pool (2016). The bassline, when it comes in, is also fantastic here. Beck plays around with just a couple of chords to create a weird classical-blues genre hybrid. Lonesome Tears, though slower and more balladesque, is great for the same reason. A few of the songs suffer simply because Beck's voice is kind of... well, boring. And the instrumental can only do so much to help that. Guess I'm Doing Fine and Round The Bend are, collectively, ten minutes of indisputable filler caused by Beck trying to make a vocal-and-strings-based ballad and failing to do anything musically interesting with it. End Of The Day is, instrumentally, a very similar track – but it does more with its chord progression. Round The Bend and Side Of The Road are two other dull tracks that suffer from a lack of zest/oomph. Could be due to not having any percussion. In fact, pretty much all tracks here lack percussion, which I think works heavily against Beck compared to his Guero album (which has a diverse range of percussion sounds). I gave that one a 4. It's pretty reasonable to give this something lower. 3/5 Key tracks: Paper Tiger, Lonesome Tears, Lost Cause

3+ album. some great tunes and a better album then i remembered.

He sings as if he's asleep and talking to someone in his dreams. The music around him is very good, great arrangements, beautifully played instruments... all he needed was to shut up. 3 stars.

This was a really heavy but beautiful album. Definitely a heartbreak album

Not sure I get Beck but this is a good listen for a mellow mood. 3.5/5

Paper tiger has Radiohead vibes with the dramatic violins Lonesome tears outro was cool in a kind of drifting in space way. It's a very mellow album with some interesting sections in the tracks. I particularly enjoyed the textures and production on Sunday Sun

3 1/2. Very mellow. Good background music.

Groundbreaking, boundary pushing and genre defining three phrases that do not describe this LP. At times lovely and at times dull. Beck is more fun when he’s having fun.

Started quite nice and most of the songs not bad but after listening too long starts to be a bit sleepy or even depressing.

Not bad, not great. Low energy.

The first half of this album felt like how Phil Spector originally envisioned the Beatles' "Let It Be" to have sounded. Definitely requires a relisten, but enjoyed this more than I expected!

I didn't have an opportunity to listen while reading the lyrics. This is another album that will need more time to digest.

I like this record okay. Beck does make interesting musical choices and though I’m largely impartial on his funkier records I do enjoy the more introspective singer/songwriter ones

Pleasantly surprised

Confort

Solid labum, not my style, for sure. I really like Beck, the music and what he represents and represented, just not these ones. I do not want to investigate too much if his other works are like this (are the album conceptuals or did he just "feel like" doing this), so I do not like these songs as much as the rest of his discography. Nonetheless, a good, albeight slowed-down, Beck record. Definitely not my favorite body of work.

A thoroughly decent album, but it didn’t leave a massive mark on me. Got a bit bored at times. 3.1/5.0 Best Song: Sunday Sun?

Not as good as i remember, at its best its very Serge Gainsbourg, at its worst it was quite boring. I imagine it was mint in 2002 though.

If you gave me a stack of CDs with Beck's catalog of music, and I listened to that stack, and you then asked me about this CD in particular, I would politely respond by saying "oh right, that's in there too" but, to be honest, I probably would have forgotten about it by then.

melancholy but soothing, it grows on you but beck is just not for me. i hope he's having a good day though

i think this is an album to listen to if you're in the vibe for it

A bit too melancolic for my taste

Really good album. I think Odelay or even Midnite Vultures are better Beck albums, but this one certainly deserves a nod.

It's ok, nothing ground breaking for me and a bit slower to some of the Beck tunes I've liked before. Quite long as well, not bad by any means

It must have been a pretty devastating breakup that was able to take the weird out of Beck. With the help of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, "Sea Change" is a beautiful and pain-filled album. There are plenty of good songs here with the major standout being "Lost Cause", one of the best he's ever recorded. But this isn't an album you would listen to if you were in the mood for Beck. If you're after melancholy, others also do it better. It's an accomplished album, just not one that I'd listen to often. But credit to Beck for stepping out of his comfort zone and doing it well.

Late night melancholy. It's good, but not what I'd go looking for.

Really liked this until about half-way through - Round the Bend and pretty much onwards. Droned. Before that it was groovy, surprisingly chill. Was expecting more racket, considering it's Beck.

I'll consider this one "Beck gets sad". Because that's pretty much what it is- a sad album, without anything else really to break that up. Even so, it was pretty good listen as a whole. Nothing here will blow you away, but it will make you feel something. My biggest issues with it were the constant melancholy tone and the length. I think it was a song or two too long, especially since it didn't have anything to give a break from the sadness. There were even a few songs where I thought "this sounds like a closing song", but then another one started playing. Even with its flaws, it was enjoyable. He traversed some different (as yet, for him) musical ground, with pared down, simpler instrumentation and styles. Some tracks sounded more country, others more folk, and some closer to straight acoustic rock. There was a lot of quiet and atmosphere. Perhaps it was seeing this other side of Beck, without the wackiness and strange music and lyrics, that made it more interesting. Maybe this type of music coming from him is what made it seem more meaningful. Either way, it was refreshing. I give this one points for its honesty and the quietness of its power. There are some issues with it, but not enough of them to make it bad. I found it pretty good on the whole. Overall: 3.4/5

It's good, there are some seriously off-putting vocal affectations that make otherwise great songs just par

The Golden Age. If you use some country inspired slide from the get go i am going to be favorable. This os going to be an album about love and loss which auits my mood of late. Otherwise meh song. Paper tiger. He sounds like he cant be arsed when he sings, like he cant be fucked opening his mouth too far. Otherwise quite nice this song. Like the bass lines. Guess im doing fine. Didnt realise he was so alt country. Lonesome tears. Very lofi feel. A little Air Moon Safari about this. Lost cause. Its growing on me this album. I think in the right mood it is one to let wash over you. He cant be fucked oepning his mouth cause hes just exhausted by this relationship hea in or has been in. End if the day. If youre onto a good thing stick to it. More of the same really. Its all in your mind. Round the bend. Already dead. I dont hate those album. I quite enjoy the meloncholy. It moves through stages of growf almost. Not sure id listen to it again and agaim. Sunday sun. There’s something almost Brian Wilsony about this, combines with the Beatles wall of sound. Theres a bit going on here. Really like this. Little one. The most Beck-like track so far. Side of the road. Im not very familiar with Beck and his catelogue. This isnt what i would have expected going into it. That isnits not what i thought a beck album would be (all samples and whacky instruments arranged to a pop sensibility, apmost post-punk pop but with an alt pretenscious twist - maybe i’m off the mark with him? ) so for that i am pleaseamtly surprised. Songs are pretty stripped back and the players fairly solid (likely better than Beck in the musicianship stakes). I maybe let my bias against Beck coloyr my view with comments like ‘meh’. Its probably not wrong on a certain track by track level but i after listening read he didnt release any somgs from this as singles, forcing people to take it as a whole and i think thats right and something noteworthy in it’s foresight im amd of itswlf. I suspect if i listemed to this over and iver it would grow on me. I like that and might gove it more of a go even if to listen to aomw great musicianship from the back band. This person clearly didnt have the album grow on them. http://analogue.io/essays/unpopular-opinions-beck

I want to like this album more, but somehow can't. Three really good tracks; Golden Age, Guess I'm Doing Fine and Lost Cause.

Stark 3a. Vacker, melodisk. Kommer lyssna igen. Lite tråkig och deppig dock.

Becks good but it was a little boring? Very calm

This is a good example of how my tastes have changed. Twenty years ago this would've been a 5/5 from me. Now, it is still good, but not to the extent I remembered. A lot of moody heartbreak songs without much depth. Surface-level orchestration and blips and bloops throughout to cover mostly cliche lyrics and Beck's singing which is inconsistent song to song. Often it sounds like he has cotton balls in his cheeks, like distracting intentional mumbling-- "Sunday Sun" is a good example of this. Overall it just doesn't come together well enough for me. The standout song for me is "Round the Bend" which evokes Nick Drake. Most songs don't know whether they want to be organic or electronic and the blend doesn't quite work. I admire that Beck is trying something different here though.

Enjoyed listening to this whilst working although it's not a memorable album and doesn't have anything that would be pulling me back to listen again. Its just a decent album.

Nice, mellowish album.

Sympathique mais pas bouleversant

I've liked some Beck before but I think it requires a certain mood. While it certainly wasn't a bad album, it wasn't my favourite. Top Pick: Paper Tiger Lonesome Tears Sunday Sun End of The Day Hitting a 3

Wanted to like it more than I did, just a pretty boring album. The instrumentals are great, maybe worth revisiting when I’m in a different listening space

Slower than I remember. Really an amazing album, but didnt tug on my heartstrings nearly as much as it did as a kid.

This album was fun and really peaceful. I enjoyed it. Sometimes Beck's singing feels a little lazy, but the album is solid overall. This album is definitely laid back, but is a fun driving album. "Little One" is so fun. Actual rating...3.5. Liked Songs: "The Golden Age" , "Guess I'm Doing Fine" , "Lonesome Tears" , "Lost Cause" , "End Of The Day" , "It's All In Your Mind" , "Little One" , "Side Of The Road"

# Album Name: Sea Change # Artist: Beck # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Beck is obviously going through a very emotional time on this album. Musically its very good. The production, as expected from godrich, is good. The music isnt bad. Its just quite a sombre album. 12 songs about a break up is a bit too much man. i dont care how much you loved her. You are BECK, you will bang plenty of other people bro. Theres some good tracks on here, just the tone really brings it down. You just need to be in one of those break up moods i guess. # Top Tunes: Paper tiger / end of the day / sunday sun / its all in your mind # Would I listen to it again? Maybe

This is my 3rd album im listening to. I thought it was very nice but it wasnt really my type of music it was the first album that is closer to my generation so i could recognize the music more but it felt too slow and most slow songs have to be relatable for me to like so im gonna give this a 74/100

Consistently pleasant but it didn’t stand out to me. Maybe I just wasn’t sad enough or in the right environment to fully appreciate. But as it stands I prefer fun/dancy Beck. I imagine I’ll listen to this more, although also might completely forget about it

Ziemlich gut, manchmal etwas langweilig

Boring

Enjoy the alternative vibes. Quite mellow but in a really good way.

I've always appreciated Beck indirectly. His influence on other artists, respect you notice but don't immediately look into. I could not name a single track of his for the life of me. Here I am now, listening to a Beck project for the first time. Sadness. Maybe it's loneliness, maybe it's appreciation, it fluctuates and feels organic. But the project itself, its feeling, it's sadness. The musicianship is great, if you love a well played guitar this album should stand out. Personally, recognizing his vocal dominance as an instrument, I still can't find myself really appreciating the way his voice sounds. Hard to ask someone else to sing it the way he does, though. I'd have this in my collection. There's a mood for this and it hits the spot. I'm just not in that mood right now. 3.4/5

Chill and enjoyable, not sure if it stands out though. Maybe a bit generic.

Lost cause is a cracker and I do like this album but it’s a lot of the same. Perfect for a certain mood but a 3 nonetheless

Sad vibes

Lost Cause still hits. Very mellow Beck record. Gives you the feels.

Country beck

It's alright

Favorite Tracks: Paper Tiger and Lost Cause. This album feels a bit ahead of its time - i feel like it could have sounded like it came out only a few years ago. String arrangements throughout were the highlights for me. This is the saddest I’ve heard Beck, too - decent album but not my favorite! 3.25 out of 5

A few absolute hits but quite a few duds

It’s a decent album but I’m not sure it should be on this list. I sure hope Odelay is on here!

There are so many sides to Beck in the first ten years — Mellow Gold to One Foot in the Grave to Odelay to Mutations to Midnite Vultures is a crazy melting pot — but I remember still being pretty caught off guard by Sea Change, an autumnal breakup album that rarely has a groove to ride or cares to bring us out of the muck. It's a whole album of “Nobody’s Fault but my Own,” which I don't remember clamoring for. But there's layers here — Nick Drake doing David Bowie or visa versa, with a little Patsy Cline sprinkled in — and it's a rewarding listen, elevated by Nigel Godrich's gorgeous production. Catch it in the right mood on a long stretch of starlit country highway and it may leave a lasting impression. It gets a little long in the tooth by the end — shave off two tracks and maybe I would have returned to it more over the years — and I always feel compelled to like it more than I do because of the critical love it usually gets. Another 3.5 star album that I have to round up or down. It's lovely, and “Lost Cause” is maybe my favorite song he’s made, and I haven't done myself any favors rounding up on that eels record and Coldplay's debut. Still, I just so rarely come back to it. I guess that's a good thing?

Sad Beck

Good background morning music

No huge standout songs for me on this album, but overall it was pretty pleasant to listen to. I was looking for a bit more memorable tunes though.

It is a really nice album. Have listened quite a few times over a month. Some songs stand out more than others and by the end of a listen I was always ready to move on. 3.5.

Nice selection of songs and great production by Nigel Goodrich, but I just don’t like his voice!

A fine enough album to vibe out to.

Not even in Beck’s top 1001 albums

Slower but I enjoyed it

I wouldn't mind liking this album, but it falls into the "respect but don't particularly enjoy" category. (Except "Lost Cause", which I already knew and which is beautiful. Much of the rest of the album uses a lot more discordance, which, good for it, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to it.)

*sigh. Why is it so hard for me to get into folk music? I mean, it wasn't bad, but still....

Not the Beck album I'd recommend to a newcomer. But once you're into Beck, this is a great vibe once and a while.

Decent listen. Pretty Beck through and through. The Golden Age is such a great track.

A nice little indie acoustic odyssey. It's nice to see Beck's softer side albeit it is making me a little sleepy.

I did not know that Beck made a Nick Drake album.

Real close to getting two stars here but the Beck name recognition puts it over. This is not a fun album. It does have some good musicality though, albeit this album sounds similarly morose throughout. Beck's best albums are 'Odelay' and 'Guero,' hope I get to rate them higher. Top Tracks: "The Golden Age," "Lost Cause"

A sad sleepy album. I'm not into sad and sleepy. I guess it was alright for what it is.

———————————— I’m giving it a three for the few songs I liked, though most of the songs were kinda slow and boring, and I skipped. If it were playing in public, I wouldn’t take notice of it. My non-musician scoring system. 5 - Love it. Would play anytime, buy, see live… 4 - Good music. 3 - Average playlist. Depends on time and setting. 2 - I can’t listen to whole songs. 1 - No.

Pleasant enough but lacking the fun and creativity of his best output

Radiohead, but more boring, and the cover is annoying me.

Ambiental. Entenem referència a Prince?

The production and layering is great. I probably wouldn’t listen to this again though, there’s some variety but just a lot of good mid tempo rock songs that got a bit tiring. 2.5 stars

Some good sadboi stuff but needed the occasional increase in tempo now and then.

Massive downer with some very solid tunes, notably lost cause.

It's wonderfully melancholy for when you're in the mood, but sad Beck sounds surprisingly ordinary.

Weirdly, I only started to like this a bit from Lonesome Tears on. It was a 2 before, but there's enough decent stuff to make it a 3. Just not really my style, overall.

Echoing what the rest of the group said. Fine overall, first few songs were cool, but after Lonesome Tears it all kinda blends together

There are a lot of good songs on this album, but i think it starts to blend together and congeal, if you will, in the second half. The first four or five songs are excellent and I wish he had kept that energy the whole time!

I like this artist but maybe not this album except for a few songs. Overall nice in the background.

she changed Sea Change by the sea chore

I have always had Beck in my head as Radiohead for 40 year olds that think music released in the early 2000s is "new" and get all their album recs from the Grammys but I actually quite enjoyed this, the more over-produced orchestral stuff did not really vibe with me but quite enjoyed the sort of alt-country stuff. Nice job Beckerson Fav song: Sunday Sun

A good album that I’d listen to again, especially when I’m wanting to feel a little wistful in the San Francisco fog. Beyond the lyrics, the music actually sounds like the breakup of a long-term relationship, which is good work from Beck. My main knock on Sea Change is that the individual songs don’t distinguish themselves nearly enough.

Respect Beck as a musician but I’ve only ever enjoyed his music he did for a video game lol. This album sounds like a 10/10 to the right ears I’m sure, but I wasn’t too hooked at the pristine but familiar textures and sounds.

Mellow and moody, not what I expected. Decent album - has Jason Falkner and Roger Manning from Jellyfish so that’s cool to see/hear. But nothing that I feel like warrants additional listens.

Good, kinda annoying in some parts but generally okay

made me sleepy

OK - no standout tracks for me but an easy listen

Beatles-inspired soft rock. Sunday Sun and Little One are some standout tracks.

It’s not my *favorite* Bowie album, but that being said it’s still really good. No complaints and an enjoyable listen, even if it’s trumped by

Demonstrates that you can be melancholy without being maudlin. Rounding down from 3.5* though because it felt about 2-3 tracks too long.

Didn’t do anything for me. It couldn’t keep me from being distracted.

Pretty decent. Lost Cause is an excellent song. Didn't realize Beck was this good a singer. Can't quite give it 4*, as I don't see myself coming back to the album, but 3.5* for sure.

Not my cup of tea, but may appeal to some of in a melancholy mood.

The least memorable Beck album so far. It wasn't bad, I would consider listening again, but it was lacking standout / strong tracks that other albums of his have had.

He’s just so whiney

Bom álbum. CVJ Night Elf.

Good album, but overall a bit too sleepy for my taste.

The his was pretty good. 3.75

Bit sad really

6/10…Singer/Songwriter

Listened to it on the train back from a punk festival with a banging headache and little optimism going in. Its not the Beck I am used to but a Beck I was pleasantly surprised to receive. Its slow, and nice and introspective and well written. A bit of a drag? Sure but not enough of one to make me dislike it. I didn't know Beck could write like this, I enjoy his genre-mashing 90s output, to know he can also craft something like this has massively upped my opinion of him. A talented man for sure. Favourites - The Golden Age, Lonesome Tears, Lost Cause, End Of The Day, Already Dead

I literally only learned who Beck was because of Kanye West. This album’s sound draws the comparison that Beck is to Eddie Vedder what Rufus Wainwright is to Thom Yorke. The Golden Age (8/10) Paper Tiger (7/10) Guess I’m Doing Fine (8/10) Lonesome Tears (7/10) Lost Cause (6/10) End of the Day (7/10) It’s All In Your Mind (7/10) Round the Bend (7/10) Already Dead (7/10) Sunday Sun (6/10) Little One (7/10) Side of the Road (7/10) 7/10

Sounds lovely, content ok/good-ish 3.5 really I suppose

A very pleasant sounding album that has good musicianship but nothing as hooky as his earlier works. For that reason, the album doesn’t stand out for me.

Sad Beck. Solid songs even though they were depressing.

Like it. Favourite track is Paper Tiger 3/5

Sad hipster cowboy discovers reverb and makes an okay album

The songs of this album are just fine. Sonically speaking is perfection. The whole album is too depressive for me. I prefer Beck in rock/ indie albums.

Pleasant enough listen, without any standout tracks. A bit dull Beck, you can & have done better.

Chillaxig, aber auch nicht bahnbrechend. Konnt ich gut beim arbeiten weghören

I admit I haven't thought much about Beck, ever. I liked it, but didn't love it. Very midtempo throughout, quite depressing, but some very nice string arrangements.

Good Laid back stuff from Beck

I could understand why Beck made this record after the previous offerings. It was interesting in some places, I like some of the strings, thought the variety of vocals was interesting.

A bit slow but I enjoyed. Will listen again. Would add it to the collection at the right price

First? 3/5 Again? 3/5

Not bad, but kinda sleepy. Not my favorite

I like what it's going for, and it's doing interesting things occasionally, but I got bored. I want a bit more variety, in tempo, in dynamics, in whatever.

Not really my Beck record. I like it when it rocks a little harder.

Might have scored slightly higher but in one song they mugged off Elvis calling him a racist. I ain’t having that!

Kind of surprised by this. Wasn’t expecting a more stripped down album from Beck. It was good. 3/5 Might listen again

Meh 3/5

Very chill, very relaxed

Quite slow and sad, but also full and well-produced. A bit of a dirge, but not bad at all.

Not my favourite Beck, but I do enjoy the breezy sort of malaise of this album.

A solid listen. Love his composition work, but not really wowed by his voice. Beautiful soundscapes in here, loved when the strings got involved, but underwhelmed with moments that fell into Americana vibes. Almost a 4* but not quite

Beck's "Odelay" was a staple in my teen years alt CD collection but I don't think I listened to much beyond that. As an adult I grew to enjoy Bob Dylan very much. Now that I have that appreciation and have gone bock to listen to this album I see an unmistakable similarity between this era Beck and the Great Dylan. I will have to review more of what Beck did after "Odelay".

Had some really cool instrumentals, very melancholy. I think upon repeat listens this could get higher, but it didn't stick with me a ton at the moment

The first half was more interesting than the last. Very chill. Eventually all the songs sounded the same.

Damn this white guy is sad. Cheer up Beck, u make pretty decent music.

At first I thought I was really going to dig sadboy Beck, but it all just kinda sounded the same to me. It was pleasant to have on in the background, though.

NOTE: please wear headphones with this album There are so many subtleties in this album that can easily be missed. By all means, this album could have been a folk/singer/songwriter type of album, and in some ways it kind of is. But the instrumentation and SFX in some songs make it really unique and interesting. Often times, there are multiple guitars going on in each ear that are incredibly pleasing to listen to. Like I said, most of these songs could have probably been guitar chords and Beck singing, but there are added strings, added lead guitar riffs, added little elements here and there that make it more interested than most, and I can appreciate the effort put into these songs from Beck.

Alibaba radiohead

What the flip? This is so strange, if you covered up the name of the artist, I never would have guessed this was Beck. That's not to say its bad, by any means. One of my favorite things is when an artist tries a genre outside their wheelhouse, or what they're primarily known for. Lyrically, the Beckster has always been pretty creative and grabs you, and the exploration of musical instruments is strange coming from him, but the tonal shifts in here help and hinder it. It overall feels on the depressing side, although considering he was also dealing with depression following a tough breakup, it tracks. Paper Tiger was a downer that kinda kept that vibe the whole way through. Guess I'm Doing Fine also could've been a Pearl Jam song, its cool to hear Beck stretch his vocals like this. The whole thing is just a little too foreboding and depressing overall for my tastes, but I gotta give the guy credit for putting his feelings out there like this.

An interesting change for Beck, not at all what I was expecting. I enjoyed it but it’s pretty forgettable all in all. The orchestral stuff sounds nice though!

I really liked this album, it has lovely guitar passages, great singing by Beck, and it just feels so personal and vulnerable. I also loved the production, mixing folk with more experimental sounds finding a great balance. "Lost Cause" is the obvious standout.

I was surprised by this- it didnt sound like the Beck I am used to. More soft-rock influenced. Pleasant but no real standouts

This is an album full of mellow, melancholy songs recorded just after 9/11/2001. For me the record started out great but lost steam after that. Still, it was decent enough for a three star rating.

Listened w Sara. Consistant mellow sound. Nice to listen to when in the mood.

Relajante, triste, innovador para la época

No thank u

This really wasn’t what I expected from a Beck album - my only previous experience being his more upbeat stuff. It’s very melancholic and Nick Drake-inspired. I kind of like it, but I’m not sure the conceit works over a whole album. Although I can imagine that if I was in a particular mood it’d really hit. File under “unsure”.

What depression does to a mf... Enjoyed listening even though the songs sounded a bit the same to me

I think he is heartbroken guys

Enjoyed this. Definitely going back

Highlight: Paper Tiger In a nutshell: guess he's doing fine? Beck's mix of rock, folk, country, chamber pop and his trademark synth flourishes is surreal. It's a change of direction for him. And somehow it works. Overall: 5/10

I like weird-beck more than sad-beck but it's still a great album

Gloomy Beck is not my favourite Beck.

Beautiful but sad Beck :(

Decent af. Kinda sounds like Nick Drake at times, actually!

This music was basically designed specifically for me when I was in high school and came out at the perfect time for me in high school and I did not love it then and do not love it now. It is not offensive. It is not bad. It is long. I dunno why, maybe my Sea Change days will come. I will experience a Sea Change and I will love Sea Change.

it sounds great and i love the lyrics but it’s too one-note when listened to as an album. the songs are much stronger individually. let’s ffffflip it up! fav tracks: lost cause

very beautiful but not that interesting to me really. i guess I don’t really look to beck for “beautiful” songs so it didn’t have the appeal that his other work does.

Beck always surprises. Mr. Inventive. Not every song up to his highest standard, but intriguing even when not his best. Better listened to as singles than as an album as songs can run together. Violinitis needs treatment. Lost Cause makes everything better.

Wasn't bad but didn't interest me either. I'm just in a mood and not a Beck fan in general. I probably need something or someone to make the connection for me, but for now... Meh.

Love Beck, this album was beautiful but slow and dark. I can appreciate it but not as much as most of his other albums

Beck, Please tell me you did something else besides writing this album to deal with that breakup. Not that it isnt depressing in the exact way one feels after a breakup, but damn dude I hope you got some therapy or went out and got laid or did a bunch of drugs or something to take your mind off of things.

I enjoyed listening to the album.

Apparently I like sad Beck better than happy Beck. Less experimental. However, this is also exactly what I have to criticize. 52 Minutes of early 2000s heartbreak acoustic guitar whining with barely any change in tone or tempo is simply too much.

I am a fan of depressing and melancholic tunes....but this is a bridge too far to jump from.

The album is fine, there are no songs that stand out being good or shit.

Decent, a bit too one speed across the album, 52 minutes of soft guitar and softer vocals just wasn’t what I was in the mood for. Still a decent album

Not great not bad

Honestly had high hopes for this album, but it didn't do it for me unfortunately. A but of a let down. I'd guve it another chance though, would relisten

Not bad. Not what I expected. Guess I should read up on these albums before I listen. didn't know it was after a break-up.

I do think Beck is a musical genius, but this one is slow for me. Especially on a long road trip. Bad timing?

saddest beck album I’ve ever listened to. Feel better man

Damn I was really excited to see Beck come up again after loving Odelay but this was just quite generic to me.

Mostly acoustic singer songwriter stuff, but did have some more orchestral/cinematic bits mixed in

This is a tough one to review. I didn’t find it that enjoyable but it is still a beautifully arranged album. Some very nice segments throughout the album, just not really my style.

hold up i was kinds wrong about this, modern nick drake

Honestly, it's pretty mediocre for a Beck album. He has much better. Lost Cause is a good song, the rest is pretty meh.

Mellow and melodramatic album. Relaxing. Crazy how becks albums sound so different

Leck Konditor, Da hani bim letzte Beck Album scho all mini Beck-Wortwitz verschosse.

Tres pubtos - klare fall

läck beck, nöd schlecht han mi dere ganze sach um einiges meh chönne hiigäh als letschtmal, isch halt scho eher es mentigsalbum allzu vill standouts sind mer ez aber scho au nöd gad ufgfalle, trotzdem solids gsamterlebnis dementsprechend gids 3 lauwarmi vollkornmutschli id vitrine

So sleepy. So lush. So uneventful. Could have done without a lot of the strings on here. At some point, and maybe I missed it… Beck started sounding like his tongue was too big for his mouth.

Hard to explain but I didn't really get into this. It's beautifully played and recorded, at times it reminds me of lots of bands and artists I like but somehow nothing stands out. I think he was better when he was more groovy, this is a bit dull and I didn't connect with the emotion. Maybe it's the songs, maybe his voice.

I've read that this album was a result of ending a relationship. I wish everyvody this kind of mellow and uneventful break-ups. I'm happy for Mr Beck but maybe some misery would make album more interesting.

Not bad. Pretty chill

I’m not sure why I liked this when I did, because it was supposed to be the happiest period of my life. Oh well. The melancholia matches my mood more precisely now, many years on…

Listened to this the day after Odelay as I catch up. I much prefer the former, though I think this could be a grower.

Love a beck album and this one does not disappoint

It was a well-produced album, songs flowed well. Songs are soft and it shows, however, was not my jam.

Quiet album. I was really surprised by this

Atherial, chill, and melancholy on a gloomy day. Enjoyable and a little different from what I was expecting but cool.

The songs on here are really pretty and heartfelt, but the melancholy of it all is kind of depressing. I don’t know that I’d ever listen to this again.

this album didn’t do it for me, like it seemed to do for everyone else.

Favorite Track: Lost Cause

Pretty but nothing knocked me over

Always love Beck.

I appreciate how well done this album is, I just didn't enjoy listening to it all that much.

Favorite Track: The Golden Age

Honestly, my sissy loved this album in college and i think i pretended to like it. Honestly its pretty mid, i feel like most becks stuff has such a strong thematic sound but this one is just sleepytown go to bed music and it all blends together. Not in a bad way, just a boring mid way.

2002, pretty, becky

Not really in the mood for this vibe today, but it’s not bad. Slow, melancholia rock.

I didn't dislike this, it passed the time, but didn't really grab me either

Very sad and I know what I said about respecting breakup albums but I just can't get over the fact that Beck's an asshole

Had higher hopes, not bad though.

Pretty good

Not his best

I’m sure this is good music if you’re sad

Emotional, gripping.

Kinda like the bends and kinda like nirvana. Very different from the beck I’ve heard before this. Not bad by any means but nothing that stood out too much

Sad white boy acoustic music album don't land as good as it used to.

A high 3 - think it definitely needs more than 1 listen to appreciate

Break-up music. The music itself isn’t bad, lovely strings and some more interesting production choices, I just can’t see myself listening to this again apart from in very specific situations. Sad and melancholic.

Good little listen. New to Beck but I understand the vibes.

mmmmmmh cool o guess have to listi again

This feels like a really soft version of grunge, not really my style but I could see why they are well liked.

Pretty MOR. I can appreciate the musicality but I think back and I can’t recognise a song. Feels like a 3.

nice chill sound

Its too mellow for my taste but I liked paper tiger

A tad too slow for my taste but I lik the guitar

Yeah it sounds fine, but Beck's music just does nothing for me. Doesn't move me in any way, it just washes over me and and soon as the album is done, I forget it ever happened. Meh.

Lækkert! gode sange, mere interessant produktion end den her slags plader plejer at have

Cool vibes and I like the sound of this album. I really liked "Little One"!

7/10 Highlights: The Golden Age Paper Tiger Lost Cause

I was really excited when I saw that Beck was my today's album, I never really went deep into his discography, but I know what his general deal is. Upon hearing this album I was surprised, it was very melancholic, downtempo and pleasant sounding. At the start I loved it, but song after song after song there was not a single up or downturn, just a flat line. It's not bad at all and some songs from this really impressed me, but as a whole this album was not that impressive. When sad boy hours come, this will not dominate my playlist. Best: Paper Tiger, Lonesome Tears, Round The Bend Worst: End Of The Day 3/5

Reminds me of messed up times

Not bad. I generally try to avoid odes to depression and loneliness and this guy seems to be a master of that, but this album had some admirable tracks that I could repeat.

A melancholy and sad breakup album, not what you'd expect from Beck at all. Quite Nick Drake / folk rock esque, both in vibes and use of strings with acoustic guitars. There are some really beautiful and touching songs on this Not sure this is his best work, Beck suits more upbeat and experimental albums like the classic Odelay I think. He can be a fantastically quirky and esoteric songwriter at times but this is a bit more vanilla. Not bad at all but maybe not the style to get the best out of his talents
