Fuck off Gow

I liked it, the cure is good.

Brilliant album of the cures unique layered songs

Pictures of you ...

Near perfect album from top to bottom. I could listen to it on a loop.

Pet Sounds for the 1980s and goths, insofar as it's an album that feels untouchable with how beautiful it sounds. There are decades of metal musicians who wish their bass sounded as powerful as the bass in "Fascination Street" does.

one of my favorite albums of all time. easy 10/10 for me

Plainsong: 9/10 ethereal sound Pictures of You: 10/10 just a rly good song Closedown: 10/10 ambient experience Lovesong: 11/10 banger Last Dance: 10/10 nice Lullaby: 8/10 Fascination Street: 10/10 wow Prayers for Rain: 10/10 banger The Same Deep Water As You: 9/10 Disintegration: 10/10 !!!! Holy shit this takes me back.

The Cure have a varied career than one might think. Early on they sounded more post-punk (Jumping Someone Else's Train). Sometimes, they were downright New Wave (Friday I'm in Love, Just Like Heaven). They are, however, mostly thought of as a goth band. I would argue that they looked goth more than they sounded goth. At least until Disintegration. Dark and moody, Disintegration is the most goth Cure album and the best. The mood is set right from the opening with Plainsong, and then the sad Pictures of You. Though not a concept album, if play like one as mood rises and falls. After more than a decade making music, to still put out a quality listening experience is tough. It's something few artists can accomplish. To put out your best work, is just this side of amazing. Disintegration is amazing.

Good dark post punk new wave vibes.

First two songs are life altering.

I saved a few to my Playlist

Total fav

Oh man, I love this. Just beautiful. There’s a dark, shimmery quality which, when done well, almost always hooks me - it’s something present, though not perfect, in lots of music, and this album just about nails it. Even though it’s long, I wanted to play it again as soon as it ended. More like this, please. (4.5 rounded up)

Dark and atmospheric but beautiful, a masterpiece

Superb. I know the band and the songs just haven't listened to the album all the way through.

Fell in love

Moody, atmospheric and slightly gothic. It had me reaching for the black eyeliner

Such a great album. Has a great mood/atmosphere to it, great catchy songs. Nothing to complain about here.

Magnificent.

Phenomenal!

One of the most influential records for the alternative music scene. It is an absolute treasure.

Classic album

Good, liked some tracks

It’s that “fuck it, we 5” mentality. This is #47 on my topster. It’s just too good. Bob Smith and the boys really slow it all down for you and take you through the pain inside them at their own leisurely pace. Sit back and let it flow through you

Please let me start by saying, I am NOT a fan of The Cure. That being said, apart from the final track "Untitled", I don't know how much more you can do or get out of a sound, a feel, an ethos. The album is amazing. Full stop. I did not want to like it but could not help it. Truly a great overall album.

One of my favourite albums by The Cure. So many great tracks, including "Pictures of You", "Lovesong", "Lullaby" (what a great video), "Fascination Street", and my favourite "Prayers for Rain" (which must be played as loud as possible). I would give this album 6 stars if it were possible.

I'd never heard this before and enjoyed it a lot.

Atmospheric and cool, don't know why I've never heard any of The Cure's music before now. 4.75*

An epic achievement. My favorite Cure album with my favorite song of theirs, "Pictures of You."

5.0 DISINTEGRATION IS THE BEST ALBUM EVERRRR. Literally perfection and it's barely even in my top 3 cure albums. Fave songs: Disintegration, Lullaby, Plainsong

They have some amazing songs across their catalogue, but this is the cure's album masterpiece: 70 minutes of lush heartbreaking miserable bliss to wallow in. The washy sort of out of focus synth/guitar textures wash over you in waves and waves of warm beautiful atmospheric gloom. The drum and bass parts draw you further in creating a trance to lose yourself in. But when you're cascading and adrift, the lead guitar comes in, the sweet in the bittersweet brew: jangly and clear but drenched in reverb and delay and phaser, it picks out instantly memorable bright melodic lines that float gloriously above the trance and cut through the gloom, pointing up towards something light and ephemeral (Picture of You, Plainsong). Or it finds a swirling path through a minor key deeper into the bleak darkness (Last Dance, Disintegration). After a few heavy tracks in a row they mix up with a pure pop banger like Lovesong or the groove of Lullaby. Fascination Street brings it all together, a hard-driving pop-industrial beat/riff, a miasma of syths and guitars, and an anthemic belted out vocals. Robert Smith isn't gifted with huge virtuouso range or power, but uses his fragile voice to perfect effect, pushing beyond its capacity into a vulnerable wavering tone that perfectly suits the lyric's mix of pained anger, lovelorn infatuation, and nervous hope.

A perfect album, one of my favorites of all time. In a lot of ways, this is Robert Smith’s Abbey Road. It combines a lot of the elements that made him a unique and captivating artist that was spread out for over 10 years and put it into one album.

Classic Cure

Awesome

Picture it: Ontario, 1993. There's an angry little goth girl laying on her bed overcome with emotion because her boyfriend cheated on her. She looks at her walls - covered in creepy art, dead flowers, and ripped up fishnet stockings. She puts on the album Disintegration by The Cure, then turns her gaze to her tinfoil and tinsel covered ceiling with reflections of red lights she's pointed at it. She lays there listening. Over and over. Disintegration becomes the lullaby that mends her broken heart.

I'm haven't really given the Cure's discography a thorough examination, so I'm speaking from limited experience, but this feels like Peak Cure to me. I'll be revisiting this soon.

My favorite & most often visited Cure album. I love this album so much, every NYE for the last three years, I time Plainsong to play at the stroke of midnight. It's atmospheric, ethereal, melodic, gloomy, and lush. This album also plays well on a rainy or cold day. Gorgeous listen. I love you, Robert Smith.

This is one of my more favorite albums I've listened to in this project. I honestly can't imagine playing this album for anyone and them hating it. It somehow manages to appeal to all ages and genres, or at least that's how it seems to me. I do have to admit though, I keep getting Stranger Things flashbacks. I think the late 80s synth is really amping up those visuals for me.

This is The Cure at their atmospheric best. Plainsong is hauntingly beautiful.

So, so lovely.

This is really, really good work. It’s not to synth heavy, not too guitar heavy. The synths and guitars complement each other, it’s as if the sounds blend together as one. The depth of the sound stage is remarkable and is incredibly balanced. The long instrumental intros are simply amazing - they hook you and draw you into the layers of sound, and when the vocals come on board, that depth of sound still remains and carries you through the song. Pictures of You and Lovesong are the familiar tunes here, but the other tracks are solid. Plainsong, Disintegration, and Homesick are also standout songs. I did not dislike any of the tracks. The overall mood of the album is suitably dark, but hopeful at the same time. It’s not a melancholy drag, but evokes a determination to persevere and grow.

Beautiful album. I was never a The Cure fan growing up, and only knew a few of their big hits. This is the second album from them I’ve gotten and I have loved both. They have such a unique and melodic sound, moving and moody, and I just love it. I guess it speaks to my inner goth.

Fucking masterpiece.

Fantastic album, every song is worth repeating till you hate it

Rating: 5/5

I really liked this album from The Cure! My only exposure to the band was their top songs, especially "Pictures of You". The album was very gothic with alternative, dreamy rock. I highly recommend this album and will definitely keep in my collection for a relisten! Favorite Song(s): "Pictures of You", "Fascination Street", "Lovesong", "Closedown", "Prayers for Rain"

Love it. Will re-listen. If I came across the cure as a team I would have lay on the floor listening to it.Prayers for rain fav song

One of the best!

Have listened to this before once or twice. I don’t know how to describe it but it’s so tonally rich and all-encompassing. The whole album has such a cohesive vibe of darkness, haunting emotion and overall eeriness but also beauty and delicateness. A stunning album.

Very good

CLASSIC

love that :-)

Absolute classic. Love this record. Plainsong into pictures if you makes me feel like im flying. A seminal album that helped me expand my horizons and songwriting. Lovesong is so kick ass. Dark and smoky but it is at its core a song about love and you can feel how real that emotion is throughout that song and the record as a whole. Theres no one else like them. Unreal mixing on this record. Theres so many layers yet nothing sounds buried or overpowering.

love this album i even got the shirt

Loved it!

Very nice - I love it!

Love this album but its not new to me....

Got lucky and am starting off with one of my all time favorites. Perfectly lush and moody. Gave it a few listens as I read through the first volume of Neil Gaiman's Sandman and it set the mood perfectly.

Amazing vibes and good writing

Super Album! It remembers me my youth!

One of my favorite albums of all time. Top 10 that I return to often. One of the works I can play in my minds imagination. I wonder how many times I listened to this music?

One of the best albums on this list so far. Definitely better than "Pornography", even though it's pretty good itself. Two of my favourite songs are included here: "Homesick" and "Disintegration". I first heard them as covers, recorded by Rosetta and Converge, respectively. Originals have some special charm though, as the whole record. Bit of a wall of sound, atmospheric feeling, sadness, long, stretched melodies, everything I like. Just a great album.

One of my all time favorites. Smith in his best…nothing to say more about this outstanding album

Schöne Klassiker!

I found this long and gloomy the first time i bought it but i just keep coming back. A classic.

Top tier album, although maybe not the Cure's best. Still love it end to end though. 5/5

The Cure is halt einfach gut

dour lyrics with infectious and prominent bass lines. top to bottom an 80’s goth rock masterpiece. highlights: “pictures of you”, “lovesong”, “fascination street”.

Never expected to like this. Loved everything. It’s now on repeat.

super beautiful and dreamy stuff, puzzling rythms are worked in so well, feels like layers upon layers but it's really magical reverb

Ahhh this takes me right back to being a teenage goth, I bloody love all of their 80s era albums and this is arguably their best one. "Lullaby" was one of my favourite songs growing up and I still love it now.

A gorgeous gothic dreamscape of sound and emotion. A defining moment for the Cure, but also a defining album for the genre.

Still in my top 15 albums after all these years.

Ethereal soundscapes interspersed between the bigger hits. It’s sooo good! I didn’t want to say it but thought the last third or so got a little same-y but I reckon I just need more listens

So slow it look me so long to get through and I never got into it

I need this vinyl.

Another classic. One of my favorite albums from the 80s, and favorite from The Cure.

Goeie shit

Easily the best album of the 80s.

Move over Morrissey, Smith - the Master Depressant - is in the house. Yet whilst The Moz may put a wry smile on your face with his downbeat lyricism The Cure have mastered the euphoric cathartic uplifting elegance of the downbeat on a whole new plane. There is not a second of filler on this wonderful, wonderful record. Play it loud, wallow in your self pity and come away in the happy knowledge you are not alone. Just wonderful from Plainsong to finish.

A classic. I'm obviously biased because this is the music I grew up with and nostalgia is always worth an extra star or two, but this album has stayed the test of time

First song of the album (Plainsong) really matched my mood when I put it on. I was walking home from walk, it's just after sunset but it hasn't become pitch black yet. The air is crisp and the ground wet, grey clouds fill up the sky and I'm tired but not in a bad mood. This first song, then subsequently the album, helped turn my tiredness into a pleasantly relaxed calmness. A good way to end the workday. One of my favourites of the album was Lullaby.

This album is an absolute masterpiece, and in my opinion the high point of The Cure's discography by far. The production is fantastic, wonderfully blending warm bass tones with icy synths and melancholy guitars. The sound throughout gives a really accurate representation of how depression can weirdly feel comfortable and warm at times, but also isolating. A feeling I don't often see depicted in media. Lyricly, Robert Smith touches on a lot of similar themes, particularly the growth and catharsis that comes after letting go and coming to terms with loss. However the real genius of this album is that you don't even have to have experienced these things yourself to relate to the songs, because they are so well written and performed.

Love this album. It’s moody, dark, catchy and it’s still fresh.

Great album!

Every time I listen to this album is a good time. Each individual track is great in its own right but as a album it’s even better than the sum of its parts.

Fucking banger. The only weak song is the big single Love song.

Loved this listen - had to put it on a few times in a row to get my head around it. Lots of depth and capture of a particular sound that seems top of its style. Heartbreaking lyricism and vocals from Smith - this one will happily land in my rotation. Four and a half. Fave track: Prayers For Rain

right down my alley

This album has been a serious grower for me. The first couple times I heard it I already really enjoyed it, it's just my kind of music, but it was mostly just for the singles like Lovesong and Pictures Of You. Over time, the rest of the album, especially the lengthier songs in the second half, have really grown on me. Hard to think of many quicker ways to have 70 minutes fly by you than listening to this. The mood of it, the production, just the overall atmosphere of this is a perfect example of why the album format will never be beaten. It all just fits together so well.

This kind of blew me away, I loved it. I don’t really know what I thought this would be, but it was awesome. Most of the songs have really long instrumental intros that just build the sound and anticipation. Early on you get a little taste of the 80s new wave sound, but they manage to do it in a way that captures the best of the style. The synthesizer doesn’t dominate but effectively complements the rest of the instruments, and Smith’s voice is just awesome and doesn’t fall into the over-exaggeration trap that a lot of music from the era does. This has just such a strong top few songs. Plainsong kicks it off with a bang, first with subtle chimes and then it just hits. And then Pictures of You is awesome to follow. Lovesong is a bit poppy and has great energy. And then after a bit it turns a bit more dark and gothy (for lack of a better word) and it just totally works. It’s a long album (72 minutes) and many of the songs are on the longer side from the intros. But it’s great start to finish. A band that managed to pull together a full album of songs that are interesting and unique and it’s all cohesive. This is the reason I love this 1001 albums experience, I hit play again as soon as it finished. Favorite song: Pictures Of You Other: Plainsong, Closedown, Lovesong, Lullaby, Fascination Street, The Same Deep Water As You, Disintegration, Homesick, Untitled

This one was phenomenal. Love the poppy-emotional sound.

Perfect listening for Halloween makes me think of late 80s films

Vunderba

Disintegration by the Cure is a gothic rock masterpiece that explores the themes of depression, betrayal, and love. The album captures the dark and gloomy mood of Robert Smith, the lead singer and songwriter. The music is haunting and hypnotic, with layers of guitars, keyboards, and drums creating a rich and complex sound. The vocals are emotional and expressive, conveying the pain and despair of the lyrics. I have listened to some of the Cure's previous albums, but I never really understood their appeal until I heard Disintegration. This album blew me away with its depth and intensity. It made me feel things that I had never felt before. It made me want to revisit their other albums and appreciate them in a new light. Disintegration is not just an album, it's an experience. It's a journey into the dark side of the human soul. It's a masterpiece that deserves five stars.

I love this album. Easily The Cure's best album, maybe the best Goth album of all time. Definitely in the top ten best albums of the 80's. The layers of thick, textured synth; the chiming, delayed guitars; and a lot of the tracks actually rock. It's a cohesive total work while having incredible individual tracks throughout.

Really like

I always love listening to this album. The songs all flow together in a way that it might as well be trackless. Imbued with deep melancholy, sometimes I find that it can be distracting in the best way; almost like a form of meditation. Not something to throw on during a party, but when you are feeling down and out this album is always there for you.

classic

A lush, beautiful album that immerses you in quiet grief. Really nicely done.

I feel like you really have to be in the mood for dark, lovesick music to fully appreciate this album. If you're in that mood, this is the pinnacle of that style. If not, it might seem too long or self-indulgent. I'm giving it a 5 because of how much I can see this appealing to me in a worse mood. Disintegration is my favorite of the 3 Cure albums I've had on this list so far.

Sad boy special, right here. Perfect.

Classic. Dreamy, dark, moody catchy. *Heard before

I had never really listened to The Cure before this album and I have to say I'm a bigger fan than I thought I would be. The album starts slow with a very plain song opening. Maybe that opening elevated the other songs or maybe it was better without including it. This album only has a few weaker songs and that could be due to my preferences, not because they are objectively weak songs. This album stands as one of the most consistent albums from a quality standpoint that I've heard in a while.

For me, this is a perfect album. It’s atmospheric, full of regret and nostalgia. The melodies are infectious, the drum beat works seamlessly across the album. This is exactly the kind of album I’d pull out for a rainy day with no expectations.

GOATED. 10/10 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾 The best Cure album. No skips. No misses. Just heat all the way through. A timeless classic.

good as hell tbh

YEAHHHHH: I LOVE THE CURE. It is a cardinal sin that this is one of the only Cure albums I haven't listened to but I have to say it's one of the best. The eerie gothic rock is cooked to perfection. Leaves that lingering feeling in your soul, bittersweet full of depth and character. I could listen to this album again and again and honestly it will never grow dry.

Getting depressed has never gone down this smooth. Self indulgent. The only break from depressing is melancholy and apathy. Dark. Also devastatingly beautiful. Polished until it shimmers and gleams. The cure did make better pop music but this is their best music.

Classic! South Park said it best…you rule Robert Smith. Disintegration is the greatest album of all time!

Never been a The Cure fan but this is an amazing record.

Beautiful album all the way through

When I was growing up The Cure were always in my periferie, but never front and center. That had to do with a lot of people that revered this band. They tried to get me to listen, because it apparently was music that was fully up my alley, aka 'beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.' And I don't know what happened but it never clicked. And the people who loved this band turned musically into very closed-off people. With only 1 genre and nothing else. So The Cure has been synonymous to these people, that genre. The 1001 album challenge has now served me 3 Cure albums and I can truly say how wrong I've been. All three have brought richly layered beautiful melodies, incredible lyrics and a brooding dark atmosphere. I now, in my 40's, can acknowledge that The Cure has made some of the best albums I've ever listened to.

I'm familiar with this one. Good stuff.

3 october

One of several peaks in The Cure's long history as a band. There is always something in their discography for me whatever the mood or time I find myself in. Disintegration is among my favorites. Although I will say I was initially suspicious of it at the time it came out since I had moved on to other genres of music. I eventually bought a used copy of the CD and am grateful that I did.

Pictures of you ...

Always loved this album was very grunge for the time

This is a wonderful album! Comprised of elements that could easily devolve into noise, the artists instead carefully craft them into something smooth and flowing. It's an audible dichotomy of hopefulness and sadness. Of nostalgia and heartbreak. Any time I listen to this, my brain is usually enveloped by the music and doesn't even fully recognize the lyrics, but they are beautifully crafted as well. Reading them without musical accompaniment, they flow naturally as spoken word poetry—something that many artists fail to accomplish. I wavered between giving this a 4 or a 5, because this isn't an album I'll just put on willy-nilly—I have to be in the right mood. But, when the mood is right, it always hits the spot. It's like commiserating with an empathetic friend about time lost, hopes unrealized, and then reminding each other that even if the present and the future aren't be what you used to expect, it's just how life is. Sometimes sitting back to recognize and accept that fact is what you need, not any false promises or new hopes that may later be dashed along the side of the street, too.

This record has been a constant in my life and I will not imagine it otherwise.

🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

The Cure's masterpiece. Robert Smith's aching vocals singing some of his best lyrics; Picturtes of You, Lovesong, Fascination Street all just beautiful. Musically it gets pretty heavy at times but then lightens up just in time to keep it very accessible. 5 stars

I love the first 3 album of theirs better but this one was one that I was really unfamiliar with and I loved it from start to finish. A nice 8/10 for me

I have depression and I approve of this album. But yeah, Lovesong and Pictures of You are hits, the decision through the album to just ride the instrumentals and listen to bass riffs on loop is great, its so moody and full.

I often think about the South Park episode where they say this is the best album ever made, and sometimes I’ll give this a play and think that they were a 100% right.

Crime is a disease. Here’s The Cure.

the art of falling apart

all time great album Favorite Songs: Lovesong, Pictures of You 5/5

On a rainy night, this album feels different. Dark and comforting at the same time. Definitely a favorite album of mine. Favorite track: The Same Deep Water As You

Never really paid attention to The Cure but man this is some good shit.

This is the 4th album on this list that I know and like every note of.

Not my favourite cure album but still almost perfect

If i can say one thing about the 1001 is that it turns out i really like the cure, joy division whereas in the past i had put it aside as i was more into metal. Loving the overall feel of the album. Period.

One of my favorites that I haven't heard in a LONG while. I think this is going to hit harder for me these days.

As perfect of an album as I have ever heard. So consistent in tone and theme, but it still feels like a journey. And despite being so morose, it's a great sunny day album. A rare achievement.

This is a masterpiece. This was an album I only listened to with headphones. My community had a notion that the Cure were weird. When I got away to college, I was more comfortable publicly expressing my acclaim for this album. It's beautiful in sound and texture. This blew me away in 1989 and I believe it still holds up today.

Incredible album. Atmospheric masterpiece.

I’ve heard it before but I love the cure definitely their best album

A classic, atmospheric and works well as an album

A simmering beast of an album. A sonic soundscape of love and misery. The height of goth and The Cure's definitive album. Listen, enjoy, and lose yourself in the mood. Lullaby is one of his highest of high points - though the single version had a much better drum track.

je mets 1000 sur 5 pour lullaby

on my first listen i this was instantly one of my favorite albums, over time that diminished a little bit there’s no way i’m not giving this a 5

I liked that a lot. I didn’t want to change it and I didn’t want it to end.

Cure is awesome!

- Great music to contemplate to - Guitars sound very dreamlike - Great vocals and instruments that blend together in one moody, yet bombastic package - Pictures of You, Last Dance, Lovesong, Fascination Street

Actually got into this one just recently before starting the 1001 albums project. I have to say, it's gonna be my first 5 of the bunch. I haven't heard anything else from the '80s that sounds quite like this. It's often catchy, yet vast and adventurous. It's depressing, yet uplifting. An absolutely immersive experience of an album with gorgeous melodies and lush atmospheres galore. These days, it may have the reputation of being a basic hipster album. I actually put off listening to it for a while for that reason. But that doesn't really matter when it's THIS GOOD. I can't imagine how magical it must have felt to hear this when it first came out.

Wat een goed album! Vette vibe, goede nummers.

The Cure. Transporting, defining music of the last 2 decades of the 20thC. And of my generation for sure Yes, they belong on a list like this. They are good, too good, at what they do. I had forgotten what it is to listen to, and then enter, beautiful discomfort. at first you resist it as moody angsty stuff. but if you want to remember the feelings of teenage alienation, unrequited love, and the complex moods of those hormonal, transitional, and so formative and yet whimsical/melancholic/exciting/hopeful and disoriented times? Disintegration, is sounds almost glib to say it, but it evokes all the longing, pain, empty moody depressed emotions of a teen breakup, or alientation, or sense of isolation so well.... Their melodies and lyrics (their strange so beautifully evoke emptiness, sadness, and Hopelessness with a capital H. As an online reveiwer from Immortal Reviews wrote: "The Cure's Disintegration is an ode to depression, capturing the hopelessness of it in a perfectly..." and then there is this : “A protracted wallow in the misery of love unrequited or recalled in hopeless desolation” is what Britain's Q magazine called Disintegration. And that is their artistry. I always liked (and needed, as an antidote for any listening to their painful cure) their 1 or 2 "happy" tracks best. (Just Like Heaven, "Friday I'm In Love", lovecats. They do make pain beautiful. they do sadnes well, so they also know how to evoke an exquisite joy. I am reluctantly giving this a 5, despite not *wanting* to listent to this at the outsiet, but its quite the psychological exploration. and then the music; they were masters. Small doses.

This one is so good. The atmosphere is fantastic - the spaciness lets the gloomy mood shine. The melodies are amazing and instantly memorable - just listen to that bass on ‘Lovesong’. Lastly, I love the lyrics - ‘A woman now standing where once there was only a girl’ particularly hits me hard, even though I’m a guy who hasn’t been in a relationship before. It is a good album. The end.

Amazing moodscapes. Haunting. Grabs you by the soul and yanks.

1. love plainsong, it sounds not plain. Makes me feel like i have went to space. 2: love the guitars 🎸 . GORGEOUS. amazing. Every adjectives. 3. If only I could fill my heart with love 4. The panning

A brilliant album. Listened to 4 times all the way through since last night, and Fascination Street about 10 times

Surely their best album. A masterpiece front to back. Still sounds so bright and moody at the same time. Love it.

Goth GOAT

Brill.

Such a great album, feels like putting on something comfortable. I was hooked from the opening strains of Plainsong. With my favourites this time around being Pictures of You and Fascination Street.

Simply lovely - could be the type specimen for "cohesive albums". Wonderfully consistent atmosphere where moods wax and wane but never introduce imbalance. I think this project has really switched me on to The Cure, and I now wish I could go back and bump my score for "Pornography" from a 4 up to a 5. Fave track - well, this is all about the totality of the album, so I'm not sure it makes sense to pick faves, but even if I did pick faves, more than half the tracks would qualify. If I had to give a short shortlist, let's go with "Pictures of You", "Lullaby", "Fascination Street" and "Homesick" ♠️

Most of my favourite Cure tracks are not on Disintegration (though Plainsong and Lullaby are definitely up there). Somehow, though, the individual tracks almost don’t matter. It’s a 70-minute long mood piece exploring that space between dark, intense emotion and big, glassy emptiness. Honestly, such long songs with such little structural variation shouldn’t hold the attention nearly as well as they do (and I’ll deduct half a star because inevitably there are times when the spell does break and I just want them to get on with it), but for the most part they keep me entranced. Maybe because the guitar and synth textures are always on point? I dunno, it just *feels* like The Cure achieved exactly what they set out to with this album.

This album is sooo good. I always knew that if I got into The Cure, I'd love them and I was so right

This was excellent. I was familiar with a few tracks but this album is stacked, such a full sound on this one, the attention to detail in the musical arrangement is so impressive. It’s sprawling and beautiful, think I’ll add this to my rainy day listens. 5 stars

This album hits every time. I love The Cure and this one of their best albums.

Wow I couldn’t stay awake it was so moody and chill. Loved it!

I'm currently listening to this album as I write this. Incredible output from the kings of introspective goth rock, one of the best sad bands of all time. This album is #116 on the RS500. My dad loves The Cure and would play them frequently for me as a young kid. This album has several standout tracks: Plainsong to open, Pictures of You (the long intro could go forever without me getting bored, I almost get sad when Robert Smith's voice comes across, but I think that's the point of the track), Lovesong and Fascination Street and the best song: Lullaby. In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave Disintegration four-and-a-half out of five stars, and applauded the band by saying, "The Cure's gloomy soundscapes have rarely sounded so alluring [and] the songs – from the pulsating, ominous 'Fascination Street' to the eerie, string-laced 'Lullaby' – have rarely been so well-constructed and memorable." Erlewine went on to praise Disintegration for being "darkly seductive", and "a hypnotic, mesmerizing record". Pitchfork praised the record, admitting "Disintegration stands unquestionably as Robert Smith's magnum opus." Writer Chris Ott noted that "scant few albums released in the 1980s can boast an opener as grand as 'Plainsong', the most breathtaking, shimmering anthem the band ever recorded."

this album is fantastic new wave gothic beautiful guitar magic. its brooding and thoughtful. the single is icing on the cake for the album. it starts off with power and grace and mood. it end sharp and succint. the glossy, angelic riffs all over the synths is top tier. i love the guitar tones and the energy. wow. i didnt think id like the cure like this, but yowza, it deserves repeat listens and study.

Easily one of the best things to come out of the 80s

Love songs for days!!!

One of my favorite albums of all time and The Cure's magnum opus. Disintegration is a masterclass in gothic rock, that was able to break further into the mainstream and take the band to a career-high. While singles like Pictures of You, Lullaby, and Love Song are staples of their career, the albums' deep tracks like Plain Song, Untitled, Prayers for Rain, and The Same Deep Waters As You are staples of the genre. Would recommend it to anyone that wants to hear a masterpiece.

5 stars all the way. Moody, epic, lyrical, multi-layered and BIG.

The Cure is amazing. I probably listened to this album more than any other in High School.

This album is just like a sad, dreamy hug and I love it.

Five stars! Weird goth kids forever!

This was The Cures goodbye to the 1980s and what a farewell it was! Lyrically this is Robert Smith crafting masterworks with a pen, even if musically it doesn’t stray too far from the familiar sounds. A masterpiece indeed.

I just want a new one… come on now. Who hasn’t heard this one? 10/10

A very soothing album with a very nice psychedelia type-a-touch. Bangers such as Lovesong, Pictures Of You and Plainsong might be my favorite. Will I listen again? - Definitely 5/5

2023/03/07 Superb!

A magical album with so much atmosphere. It definitely wants me to listen more to The Cure which I often put a bit to the side!

Ah, classic era Cure. I find I have to be in the right mood to listen to this all the way through, but I am today, and that's when it's masterpiece shines through. Pictures of You is the very definition of shimmering. And Lullaby. It's kind of Psych-goth in places, if that is even a thing. Over-long at 72 minutes for certain, but this also adds to its oppressive nature. You do feel swallowed up by this album.

Definitely in my top 100

Lovesong and disintegration have to be two of my favorite songs of all time. I already knew half of this album and i'm happy that i listened to it in full thanks to this site. It's so perfect.

My favorite version of them, the masters of gloomy, gothy, wonderful stuff. I’d only heard the hits from this album but the rest is great, too.

Sad, white man wanking music. I love it immensely.

Great!

My favorite Cure album which put's it that with my my favorite albums. Easy 5 stars.

Is it even a question?

fairytale like album

Was expecting an overhyped eighties album. Got a brilliant album (which is undeniably eighties). 5 stars.

Love love love this

Very cool

This album is worth five stars just for Pictures of You. The rest of it is almost irrelevant. I mean, fortunately the rest of the album isn't bad.

My first 5!!

I loved this album about 10 years ago; I remember playing "Fascination Street" at a Halloween party and it went down a treat. I think it's got even better in the intervening years; it's beautifully desolate. Had I been born 10 years earlier, I would have been the biggest Cure fan.

Excellent album

Musical perfection. I have no funny quip for this one, it's just genuinely one of the best albums of all time.

I love this album! I've listened to it before and happily listened to it again! Absolutely incredible! Robert Smith is a lyrical genius, and the music is so atmospheric and ambient. It transports me to a different plane of existence, one away from the realities and insanity of life. This is one of my top ten favorite albums of all time, and one of the few albums I'd dare call nearly perfect.

hearted 2 songs on 1st listen

i love this so much

cura e tals

Amazing band. Amazing album. I could listen to this every day. First 5 star rating.

5/5 Keiner hält eine Waffe gegen meinen Kopf

9/10 second listen

Rock noir

First listen loved the vibes of this

I'm a basic bitch, but that's only because all the basic shit is so good.

So much gothic angst. Loved this when it first came out and still love it today. Fascination Street is still a great moody banger.

Love it

Lush perfection.

I wasn't ready to listen to this album the first time it was rolled to me 2 months ago. South Park called it the best album of all time, and Pornography is one of my favorites. Since then, I've listened to this about a dozen times in all sorts of settings and states of mind. I've even listened to this dressed as a goth. And I'm not sure I could really dissect this deeply, nor should I. But with Halloween just around the corner, it's time to give it another listen on one of these scary chilly nights to talk about how it speaks to me. It's a beautiful and romantic gothic album. First few songs set up the dark and gloomy atmosphere, with an emphasis on spacious synths and hollow drums and guitar plucks. Lyrics don't even begin until half way through the first song. It diverts our attention to the themes and world this album creates that will be revisited in new perspectives. The energy of the album kicks off with the dance hit "Lovesong". Strange how Robert Smith is as cold and controlled as ever yet displays such a strong sense of yearning and desire. "Last Dance" follows the groove with an anxiety-inducing horror piece that feels like someone's on the verge to snatch you away. Another example where the instrumentals are the focus, and the lyrics are hardly noticeable, feeling more like escaped thoughts in the cloud of powerful emotions. "Lullaby" carries this into our most graphic track with powerful creepy imagery of the spider man, and psychedelic effects to immerse you into the world. Our next track "Fascination Street" carries strong futuristic synths that remind me of Blade Runner or Tron with virtual vectors or space cars on the move. "Prayers of Rain" is one of the coldest songs that can put you in a trance and took me to strange places on my LSD trip. Following that up is a moodier 10-minute track "Same Deep Water". Very hazy and echoey like a ghost singing among the myst of a thunder storm. Final stretch begins with the 8 minute club hit "Disintegration": one of the most energetic and emotionally-charged tracks acting as a final hurrah. "Homesick" is a long, gentle, and sorrowful track (nice violins), preparing us for the nostalgic ending "Untitled" which serves as a satisfying goodbye. At this point, we have a 6.5 minute chill piece with a relaxed Robert Smith who stops singing half way through. His time is done, and we let the song gently take us away. Despite being 72 minutes long with an average track length of 6 minutes, there is never a point where I thought any track overstayed their welcome. Sure, there are "weaker" tracks that moreso contribute to the album experience than standalone. But no matter how long they were, I enjoyed every second. It's patient and knows how to create an easy immersive foggy and romantic environment that other gothic bands should aspire to model after.

Big, warm, intricate, slow and immersive. Love it

there is no need to say more! It's The Cure🤟🏻

Legendary

lovely

First I wanted to say this album HAS quite a mood. That's not entirely accurate though. Instead I'll say this album IS quite a mood. Was thinking way too hard about if this is a 4 or a 5. But who cares. I listened to it twice and enjoyed both spins.

Dark and brooding and pretentious and moody. Beautiful sadness. Another top album from my teenage years. I will always love the Trilogy before all other Cure albums but this one is in my top 5. A classic album.

I can't put my finger on why, but this album just speaks to me

Amazing album! So much lush reverb! So many good songs!

Pictures of you ...

Masterpiece. This album has everything that speaks to a Cure fan. The extended instrumental intros, the moody, introspective lyrics, and the Cure sound. This album is amazing. Plus it generated like 5 hits - but the whole album is hit after hit. A true perfect entry to this list for sure.

Jævlig bra

THIS IS NOT A DRILL. God I love this album. Bought it on cassette at the mall at the age of twelve. My science teacher tried to be cool and listened to it and liked it. This was post-Depeche Mode Elaine. I had heard other Cure albums before (Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me was a vibe!), but this album sealed the deal. I’ve only ever worn black since then. 🖤

The Cure's best album. Straight in at 5!

Hoera!

Classic

This is one of the best album of all times. Every melody, erery note, all lyrics are perfect

Maybe it’s just me, but this is almost a perfect album. So moody and I’m here for it!

It’s long and kind of slow, but the overall atmosphere is so singular and well executed. Also “Love Song” would get almost any album to at least 4 stars.

Gothic, soulful…. Just huge!! Clear joy division influences here, but it’s all the better for them!

5/5. Most vibey, Tim Burtony Cure so far, and one of my faves 🤙

Simply beautiful.

Superb. The Cure explore a range of angsty emotions in a lengthy masterpiece

This album had some great vibes. Just chill all around.

Love it!

Listened to on 1/28/22 4.5/5 stars Favorite song: Pictures of You Very beautiful songs with lots of instrumentals - would for sure listen to the album again and again

Best Cure album

all day. all night.

King of the Goffs in not actually that goff shocker. It's just really good indie/rock/pop/whatever music. Happy face emoji. Sad face emoji. Panda bear emoji.

This is a watershed album. It is remarkably coherent and engaging from beginning to end. The Cure’s goth edged post-punk is unique and influential. This album gave rise to some of the most enduring music of the last 30 years

Brilliance

At the time of the release I skipped Disintegration. I thought the looks of Robert Smith were pathetic and the fact that my elder sister was a fan, was also a major factor. Listening to it now, it's clear I made a big mistake. This is a fantastic album with great songs and an overall feeling of grandeur. There are some really heavy songs, but lighter works are in between to keep it balanced.

I still don’t know if this is my favorite Cure album, but goddamn is it perfect.

Enjoyed start to finish, beautifully gloomy and gothic will absolutely be listening again

🔥🔥🔥

I was hoping the 1001 would change my mind about an artist or group I had misjudged. Joy Division? Not quite. The Smiths? Haha, just kidding. David Bowie? Nope. But The Cure? I finally got there with “Disintegration.” I wasn’t won over by “Seventeen Seconds” or “Pornography.” But “Disintegration” keeps a consistent and perfectly Cure-ated vibe all the way through.

Pretty great album. Recognized a lot of songs from it and those that I didn’t were also great. The Cure are just a good vibe all around. Revised: This was my first album and I didn't know what I had in it... love this one. 9/10

Perfect and fresh sounding pops rock for it’s time.

The best one!!!

Classic album

The whole is most definitely greater than the sum of its parts.

very good

Top 10 dischi della vita.

Pictures of You

loved it

Alllll time

Second best album of all time

Un chef d'oeuvre

One of my Favorite Albums

Hey them on iPod

Want to give a 4.5 but eff it. They'll get a 5. A few all time face songs and the non-faves are still nice to listen to. No duds. Someone please kiss robert smith.

The only Cure album I dig as much as Standing on a Beach

Love this album. One of my first CDs and listened over and over.

A high 4 probably. Fav songs: Pictures of you and Lovesong. Amazing instrumentals

My favorite Cure song (Pictures of You) is on here. Pretty thematic but it becomes monotonous after a bit. 4/5

”Lullaby” är otrolig. Stark 4a.

A little wacky, a little weird, but oddly enjoyable. Favourite Track(s): Lullaby Least Favourite Track(s): Prayers for the Rain, The Same Deep
