359/1089 just not a fan at all. i sat through it fully and that’s all the time i’ll give it 17/100
Country, 47 eme album =>1/5
Country. Poznám 1. pieseň od niekoho iného...
Not liking his country side the folk thing is much better
Not one decent moment or one half decent track. Really hard work. Country, but really poor country.
it's like a bowl of overcooked butter noodles
Poor.
Too much twang for me. Way more country than rock.
This kind of country rock blend is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I’m glad this one is behind me.
may God have mercy on anyone who enjoys country music
Nope, not giving corn ball country anything other than a 1
Interesting if you’re a fan of country. I’m not really.
4 songs in and really don’t like this. Definitely not my kind of music. Also every song feels like it’s a different style and belongs in a different album. Way more country/ folk than rock like wiki says. Done with the album now, still didn’t like it. There were a few songs which I thought were okay, but nothing sticks out as great. Frankly don’t even know why this would be on the list at all, vocals are the only good part and they kind of suck.
severly not my thing
Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 1.25 (D) Oh joy another country album. Reading about its production was fascinating, and it lead me down a tangent on a cover that I knew I heard before, and now I have no idea what version of it I already knew! Not only that, there was an S tier song buried in here! Too bad about the REST OF THE COUNTRY WHINE! Track Thoughts: "Return of the Grievous Angel" C- My god its another country album. The twang of the voice is killer on the male lead, but the female harmony stands in sharp contrast... I dont know if its a stylistic choice to have a more slurred, relaxed (read less disciplined on hitting your notes) lead... But it does just make me wish for better vocal control. I do enjoy a fiddle and piano ditty, but this is just Generic Country and it makes me wish for anything else. At least it isnt ENTIRELY drenched in slide guitar... though the picked guitar solo is still too bend heavy for my taste. "Hearts on Fire" C And speak of drenched in slide guitar. Having a, what, vibraphone? That ringing instrument providing occasional accompaniment is Unique at the very least, but its not enough to elevate YET ANOTHER generic country ballad. The female singer is putting in such a more listenable performance, she has way more dynamic range, she is the real star here. I am at least intrigued by the song, but boy is it just not my cup of tea. "I Can't Dance" A I am now collecting a series of "I cant dance" songs I guess, along with KGLW's "I hate dancing", whatever the antithesis of Weird Al's "That Boy Could Dance" is. Welcome to me prasing a novelty song, shame its so dang short! This is more of a rock song, and there is something going on whith the rhythem of the song, the way the melody initially feels a little out of beat with the rest of the song, not dragging, but just slightly unaligned from how you'd EXPECT the lyrics to fit. And then as the song progresses you get 'into the grove' so to speak. Its also got a bit of a surf rock style guitar solo... Yeah this is a shining bright spot on the album for me! A diamond in the rough. "Brass Buttons" C+ Sometimes a song is just a list of things you know? I like other list songs; I listen to my fair share of Father John Misty. Its evocative in its sparseness. Too laid back for my tastes; the lazy slide guitar is less offensively used here. "$1000 Wedding" C To do a $1000 wedding is cheap as hell these days... Just a stray thought, trying to not dwell on the Generic Country Blues tune. That said, this is a hell of a sad sad song, but its no "Alone Again (Naturally)", but if you're In The Mood for something like it, I bet this hits. I actually think its a missed opportunity to NOT have female vocal accompaniment in this song and this song alone, as thematically resonant as that would be. "Medley Live from Northern Quebec" D- Is this guy canadian? Why are we getting, not just a French Canadian song, but a NORTHERN french canadian song, ugh. I'll be the judge of this melody. Goddamnit I actually like this, its got some get up and go to it. The yodelling is not unappreciated. I dont know why I thought this WOULDNT be a live recording. The problem is this is a MEDLEY, in this case being two songs stitched together, and while the FIRST part is an upbeat and energetic tune, the SECOND half is more slow plodding generic country balads. At least when listening to a few stitched together irish reels and jigs they keep the pace up, often cases building. This is just a letdown. On modern hardware, I now gotta reach into my pocket to skip when a song I otherwise would like to add as a single gets to the back half. Bleh. Do I split the difference between the two ratings, or deduct extra points from the second for ruining the first? "Love Hurts" F This song has escaped containment. I try not to do too much googling, but yeah turns out this is a cover of a song from the 60s which was more famously covered by a BUNCH of different folks. So to judge it as a stand alone song? More slow sappy country dreck. Do I want to do a complete "covers tasting platter"? Not really in the scope for this but you know what I will make an exception for such a weird album already. The rankings go: 1) Original (Everly Brothers): Not what I would even call Country! Its just a pop song! 2) Jim Capaldi: Oh wow, a funky almost disco-esque beat? Yeah okay this is a strong contender for best, but I actually still think the original eeks out the competition. 3) Nazareth: Oh yeah lets get fuckin ROCKED. Guitar tone like "Creep" and who doesnt like that tone? 4) Roy Orbison: The worst vocal performance (too much vibrato), and I actually like the more stripped back instrumentation on the original, this is a bit too much "film score" music 5) Gram Parsons: Blech. Country. See notes above. Cher: Holy super over indulgent much. Sorry Cher. Not today. 6) Don McLean: You get the worst of all worlds, too country stripped back too far past the point of charm of the original, then too orchestra... it walks you through every middling cover and doesnt stand out on its own. I now know that I would listen to 4 other versions of this exact same song before I ever hear this one! F! "Ooh Las Vegas" S- Speaking of the get up and go on the first half of Northern Quebec! I'll take more of this rip roarin kind of blues riff! Gawd DANG that guitar solo, make it YELL boi! No fuck it, in comparison to everything else in the album this stands head and shoulders above the rest, its S, I dont know if it'd be S as a stand alone, but hot damn does this song rip. "In My Hour of Darkness" F Country Gospel Music. Kill me. I am checking out now. Sorry I do not HAVE to force myself to listen to this. I can just turn it off. BUT that would be quitter talk. What if there really is some musical idea, some singular riff or tone or interesting happenstance contained within? I am committing to listening to EVERY SONG no mater how painful. I've got some WEIRD stuff coming up surely. So writing this out is protest for letting it wash away into the background. F Tier, I hate this exact sound because of lingering cult upbringing baggage, but done soaked in whiny country twang, its acrid air on my ears.
this must be the mars attacks song that makes the alien brains explode. i'm the alien.
I give anyone permission to punch me square in the dick if they hear me play this album again.
Kill me
i wish my heart was on fire
Another slide guitar infused garbage country album. The one classic song on the album, Love Hurts, is again ruined by annoying slide guitar. 1 star
Awful. Twee country music sucks.
A bit too yea haw for me. I was considering scoring this a 2, maybe even a 3. And then I read that Parsons called his music style "Cosmic American". Pretentious bullshit – and for that, combined with a needless waste of a life and talent, you get a 1
Laid-back country rock built on gentle acoustic guitars, pedal steel, steady rhythms, and warm duet vocals unfolds with relaxed, traditional ease. Listening feels like sitting on a quiet rural porch where the same slow breeze moves through the air for hours. The atmosphere is calm and sincere, but the tunes often drift by without much distinction, leaving the overall experience somewhat boring.
For a brief second, after seeing the cover, I was hopeful this might be prog or – even better – some early 70s synth ambient. Then I checked Wikipedia and saw "country". What an absolute letdown, fucking hell. …and to no one’s surprise, it’s shite. Well, not actual shite; I can tell it’s probably perfectly fine country but since this list – like all criticism in general, in the end – is subjective, I have to give it a mere one star simply because it doesn’t do anything for me and I have very, very low tolerance for country in general.
Not really a country guy. Not at all a country guy actually. So this album was doomed from the start for me. If there's some great and amazing context I'm missing here then that sucks. I just don't like country music. I do like the Las Vegas song. Once again...I don't like country.

Boring
I’m not a fan of country music, steel guitar is like nails on a chalkboard
This is the kind of sound I personally do NOT enjoy in country albums, but reading the background was so interesting it makes me want to bump this album up to 2 stars. I won't, but it's crazy how that is.
Not a fan of country, this did not change that
1/10
... Uy, perdón, me dormí 2/10
Nicht meine Musik.
More American nonsense
Didn't like the last Gram Parsons suggestion
Dull
Not really my cup of tea
Not for me at all. I've said it so many times now, I'm not a fan of Country (yes, there are exceptions but Gram isn't one of them) and mixing it with rock is blasphemous. Didn't listen to it all, I couldn't.
Not for me
Not my thing personally. Love hurts is a beautiful song and this record has an excellent version. The couple of tracks at the start are pleasant enough also, but in general this record doesn't thrill me and I'd just so much rather spend my time with something else.
I'm a metalhead, I don't like this album
For a long time I would never remember between Alan Parsons and Gram Parsons which I didnt really like. And its Gram. For sure Gram.
1/5
It's country music, FFS. Can't stand almost any of it.
Album is fine, I just personally don't like the country sound
It’s a no
Has this list been made by the whitest man alive? This record is dull, uninspired, tepid.
Help me
Country noooooooo. 1/5
oof I generally like country music but this is painful.
You guys are kind of on a rough streak
Honky tonky hot trash
Nice country sound from both the instrument choices to the singing. But the singer sometimes feels like he sings off beat and there is something missing when I compare to other country artist i enjoy but I can't put my finger on exactly what.
Not for me..
Ugh, country sucks. List has a hard-on for this guy. Must be a huge Birds fan given that there are a large number of Birds albums plus Flying Burrito Brothers plus this shitty solo album on this list. It says something that the most popular version of Love Hurts is a cover by Nazareth.
Ummm, hated the byrds and the magical flying burito or something Why did he think going solo was a good idea
Boy I really did not enjoy this. Like I turned it off.
So fucking boring. A pain to get through. Good singing. 1.5.. rounds down to ONE!
Very forgettable
I just cannot listen to full songs... 1/5
No.
Nope. From the first note I knew this was not for me.
Ugh, I can't get with country. Sorry.
nope i get that its influential and that there are a couple of songs that are recognizable. nope
I was genuinely looking forward to this, on account that I had no preconceptions, and no knowledge of the artist. But it's country rock, so in the bin you go... Heard before ❌️ feels like I have though Listened this time ❌️ a bit, but no Revisit ❌️ Just no ★☆☆☆☆
Best song: Love Hurts This may be someone's thing, but it is not mine. At least I learned Love Hurts wasn't written by Nazareth. I never cared but now I can say I know.
Kind of a country version of Val Doonican. Tedious and bland.
I've already had to put up with The Flying Burrito Brothers' bullshit, I really didn't need this one too.
No me gusto
Not really my vibe. I do like a bit of country but this didn't resonate with me
This demonstrates all the things I don't like about country. Rating: 1
Aside from the fact the man betrayed his wife, this album definitely leans more into Country, not Rock, and that's a no-no. Favorite Track: "Oooh Las Vegas".
I really hated this one. Felt like I was back in South Carolina in the worst of ways. I did like the wiki tea on the widow removing Mary Lou from the cover on some petty vibe
Country-style music might be a thing in America. I'm not really into it.
bonus track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6HzoUcx3eo 1/5
Don't really like the country aspect but I will admit it's quite a vibe 1/5
Wow. So I'm not a fan of country overall. I enjoy the old stuff. Willie Nelson was always played growing up. I can't make it through a whole song so far. I'm hoping the lady singing has a solo song in this, she sounds alright then the guy starts caterwauling and I'm done. His subdued stuff is ok, Brass Buttons was decent as was $1000 dollar wedding. Neither will make it into my rotation but they are bright spots for me. The album is better after the first couple of songs. It does make me want to listen to George Jones again.
3/10
46/1001 Country music. Even when they are not singing about going on down the freeway, sitting on porches, alcoholism and comparing an attractive girl to a flower, it sounds like they are anyway. Lauded way beyond its worth, this is a deeply dull album, I simply cannot see the attraction. Always seems to crop up on best-of lists and frequently gets billed as "alt-country". Maybe it just doesn't translate to the UK that well, but I fail to see anything alternative about this, save for the fact his lifestyle led to his early demise on a lethal drug and alcohol bender. Yeah, he was in The Byrds - right about the time their albums frequently became a pile of unadulterated cack. Even the cover looks like a badly done funeral order of service. Yuck. Next.
Shite
No, thank you
Shockingly bad
No, never again. Cliche ridden rubbish. I cannot see any entertainment value in this dreadful genre.
Ugh. Just a generic country rock record, except the singer died. Nothing else standout about it.
1 star, bored
Yeah, this is a big heaping pile of honky tonk.
Not my taste at all. I will probably never listen to it again. It did expand my music taste and possibly deserves to be on this list. I wouldn’t know though.
Among the options we have on the 1001 site, we should have the option to limit just 1 country album per week maximum.🙃 Take it seriously. I bet it's not the worst country album we have here, but after listening to all the albums that influenced it and all that was influenced by it (in a genre with less variability), it is normally an awful experience.
Dull
Ugh. I dislike Country music, and this album is no exception. I think Gram Parsons was influential in bringing a country sound to many bands he worked with, but I doubt this album was.
Las Vegas was the only fun one. Just dreary otherwise. I think Spongebob has ruined that specific kind of distortion for me
2/10 I can't with this. I want to buy the record and throw it in a river. 12-18-2024
Second country album in a row. I don't like country.
What kind of name is Gram?
I try to listen to all the albums here, even if I don't like the genre...and I've had a few very pleasant surprises. This wasn't one of them. I really don't like Country music...and after one and a half songs from this album I had to turn it off. I couldn't even last the whole album.
Some days I think this project is trying to torture me.
Nothing great here. The cover of love hurts is ok
Not only is this one of the worst album covers I've ever seen, this is terrible country music... Can't even listen to this, it's hurting my head. No way this is an album you should have to hear before you die... this should be the album someone tortures you with before they take you out.
I don't like country music
I’d heard of the name, no idea what to expect, so was looking forward to something new. But, by the powers of greyskull, I was not expecting this puddle of bollox. I was genuinely cringing at some of this corny stuff, Brass Buttons in particular was just dreadful. I usually find country music has some charm/warmth, this is just devoid. Surely the world of country has a tonne of better albums than this?
Unbearable Country & Western.
Found some of the vocal harmonies on the first track a bit whiny, and slightly out of tune. Unfortunately, that continued on the second track. The third track started better, but then had the same issue. Pretty much had to tune out to make it to the end of this one.
I feel like I just listened to “Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley” nine times.
Too country
Boring country music
Two words. FUCKING AWFUL. Then again i hate country…
Just sounded like country to me
Oh God, please, no more country music! Aaargh!
This shit kinda swagger less.
It's no Marty Robbins
Oppilas koulussa kysyy heitä biitti... meikä rupee beat boksaa.. bumtsiga bum bum.. bumtsiga bum bum.. siinä... yhtä masentavaa hänelle kuin tämän albumi biitit minulle.. Uninspiring..
I guess this is alt country but it is neither country enough or alt enough to be interesting to me.
what. the. hell.
Painful...
Didn't really dig it.
Basic country music
I’d heard of Graham Parsons but have never taken any notice of him or his music. It was only has a result of this album turning up on my list that I read about him and learning that he died shortly after this was released. Whilst it was interesting to learn about him I’m afraid that country music is not my scene. Born in wrong place and time to appreciate it and a big turn off whenever I hear it. 1/5 24/3/24
Sorry - but this was just awful... There is a small sliver of Country that I really do appreciate, but this ain't it... It's probably better than the vast amount of Country music out there, and is fairly well-done for what he was trying to do, but there isn't anything compelling on this album... My eyes did perk-up a little when I saw "Love Hurts" as I saw Nazareth a few times back in the day, and that song kicks ass - so I thought maybe Gram wrote it - but nah, the original was written some dude named Boudleaux Bryant in 1960 for the Everly Brothers, and Gram's interpretation here was just lame... Nazareth's version is still the definitive version of "Love Hurts" hands down... Not gonna lie, this album was hard to get through...
Awful. It sounded like dying cats.
Country. Enough said.
Should humanity be destroyed like the Martians were in the movie Mars Attacks by the song Indian Love Call by Slim Whitman? ... then keep it up!
Here is a list of things I hate. 1. Country music. End of list. I fucking hate this Confederate flag waving, gun loving, I'm a cowboy, sister marrying, trump worshiping sonic diohrea. Your not good old boys, it's not the land of the free and god has forsaken you and your idolatry. Hickory wind is a good track but it's not on this album so bollocks to it.this isnt a bridge between country and rock it's a bridge between country and satan's arse.
Tried it, had to stop, country really is a difficult genre to listen to.
Couldn't get past song 2. I hate country.
Country music is not my thing. Couldn't get past the 3rd song.
Not sure my ear can pick out what makes this one of the best albums of all time. It's a decent country album with great harmonies by Emmylou Harris. It's all I hear and unsure why it's on the list of 1001.
Ugh. I know Parsons was part of a super group, but this was not enjoyable for me.
Please no country 😱
Not the biggest fan of the instrumentals in any track, and the vocals didn't help much, thankfully it's a short album. 3/10
Generic country
Gave it an honest try, but couldn't make it past a few songs. Maybe there's some country out there for me, but this isn't it.
No. No Country Music.
Grievous on the ears.
This is entirety too country for me. Skip.
I started this project to expand my horizons, knowing full well there would be many albums I didn’t like, but committing to listen anyway. With one exception: I will NOT listen to any fucking country music.
Nope, not my thing. Too whiny
Ugh, mér leiðist kallaköntrí ennþá.
Gross.
Can't do country
Big no, just not my style.
Fucking cuntry again. Fuck off and die, Gram. If you haven't already. Let me check.... Oh, he is dead...well great. Good. Wait..he died in 1973 and this was released in 1974. Maybe it wasn't his fault. Maybe he never meant for this dogshit to be released. I take it all back, Gram.
Its country by todays standards. I did not like many country artists before and this album is a good example of why I don't like it.
Don't mind me while I go cut something in the carpark
They say this is an important country album as it takes in some rock and roll influences. I’ll have to take their word for it since I’m not an expert but it’s not too remarkable for me.
Such a depressing album-it’s quite literally the classic sad stereotypical country music. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: none
Its the most *country* country album I've heard. The opening to the first track made me cringe so much I couldn't do it
Thank God I never have to listen to this again
I had to pop an extra Lipitor this morning from consuming all the cheese in this album.
Blurgh. I had a friend in high school we called him Dime Bag because he always had weed. He followed to the Grateful Dead. If he wasn't in class, he was probably getting high in some VW bus in his Birkenstocks in between shows. Anyhow, Dime Bag was really chill and flew under the radar. He had an older sister named Nicki and she was amazing. Their parents were alcoholics. Dime Bag's real name was Graham. This Gram Parsons album sucked. I was really disappointed in it.I'd heard a lot about this Gram Parsons guy and was excited about listening to him, but the boring twang and slow roll had me looking at the clock after the first two tracks.
country meh
Not a fan of this style at all.
too much country for my own good
Almost as terrible as the album cover.
Not for me
Never liked country music and I don’t think I ever will. I’m sure this is a belter if you like this sort of thing, but its not for me.
Sweet lord
This is terrible. Country rock music is not my thing. Coupled with that kind of yodelling/singing that country is kinda known for. Big yuk. My heart is not on fire, my ears are! Best: Ooh Las Vegas Worst: Hearts On Fire
More cowboy shit
Not my bag. Found it quite grating.
I just can’t with Country music. This is abysmal.
Really did not think this was an enjoyable album. I dabble in country and always love rock but this didn’t hit either of those spots for me. Too slow, too empty sounding I did enjoy the live track on the album, but the recorded versions had none of the same energy
I typically make it a point to listen all the way through an album before rating it, even if I'm not really enjoying it, but this one I just couldn't do. I made it through three songs and just couldn't do anymore. It's very musically competent, there's just something about the genre that I simply cannot stand.
