Reviews (page 6 of 7)

I really couldn't get through this one. It was bad. No, thank you from me

Not a fan of country music, generally. This isn't the worst I've heard, though. 2/5

Not my favourite, but I’m not a big country-ish fan especially from this era.

Twangy and sad/sleepy. Which works on Love Hurts but not really otherwise.

Nice enough, I like the harmonies with Emmy Lou Harris but not really for me overall. Quite forgettable

I tried hard to put myself in the place of temporal denizens around when this album came out, but I just didn't think it was that exciting. If I were a movie director and needed a backing band for a scene in a country bar in 1974, I would choose Gram Parsons. It's exactly what you'd expect, and conjures images of red blooded Americans drinking bud heavy while leaning against a long wooden bar complaining about hippies at 1 PM on a Tuesday. Gram is obviously very talented and prolific (he also had a crazy life), but this shit is pretty standard. It is not bad, just not not boring. Plus, I give him demerits for supposedly being the catalyst for "country rock". Thanks for nothing, Gram.

Aw gee shucks, more good ol' country. He's got a nice voice at least, I'll give him that.

Ironically I did not dislike this one but it won't be added to my library hahaha it's not my thing.

Not for me

The story of Gram Parsons is way more interesting than this album.

I can get down with a little country, but this one didn't do much for me. Didn't feel it.

Not really my speed but there were some nice songs

Had headr the name, but didn't know where from. So had no idea what to expect, until the first bar of the first track. And for country and western it was surprisingly OK, except of course, for the total annihilation of Love Hurts. I don't believe I've ever heard a worse rendition of that particular classic. In general ok, but not my bag. 2

Yay country... 🫤 Yeah nah, this might be the first 1⭐, I'm sure it's very clever but two songs in it's bringing me out in a rash, really hate this type of country music soz. Landed at ⭐⭐ = don't like, wouldn't buy, recommend or listen to willingly again 😆

2 out of 5. Too country for this suburban vermin.

Varmaan asetti perustuksia modernille poppikantrille? Aika ok mutta jää minusta vähän ulkokultaiseksi.

This was indeed grievous

Country frel

Fucking dire. I'll admit that Country music is not one of my favourites - but, that being said, I've listened to several albums from that genre on this list and can at least appreciate them and notice some musical value. Somehow I made it all the way through without turning off - more due to being preoccupied with something else rather the music grabbing me - so I'll give it 2 stars!

Seems like a B or C album even back in the day, sounds ok but pretty basic cheesy/corny lyrics on any song that isn't a cover, very big "meh" or shrug. Reminds me of corperate country today in that regard.

Gäsp sa Jesper. Nåja, det är ju alla fall inte rap eller hiphop.

Not my favourite. I just didn’t really like the sound of it and it felt a bit boring. 2 stars

Too country for me

Apparently "it is viewed as a successful example of the hybrid between country and rock and roll Parsons called "Cosmic American Music," I think there must be some malfunction in the streaming service, the rock and roll part seems to missing, all I'm hearing is country.

Decent album.

Саундтрек для Горбатой горы? ;)

I don't know what I expected Gram Parsons to sound like but it wasn't this. I appreciate it for what it is, but it's too twangy throughout for me. There are a few standout tracks, but I don't expect to listen to this again as an album.

Nudne country

Ein kurzes Album, bei dem leider auch nichts hängen bleibt. Es war spannender, die Lebens- (und Todes)geschichte des Sängers zu lesen.

Not nearly as good as the Beatles

Ok country album, a bit bland at times.

I expect more out of a genre name like "Cosmic American Music." The harmonies are nice when they're present.

dit is het niet... zoveelste country plaat...yuk!

I don't know how to really justify or even explain why I did not enjoy this one beyond the fact that it sounds like the typical tropes of country which aren't too painfully interesting to me. It's not "bad" but it's nothing I care about really

Great voice and feeling. The fact that Emmylou Harris isn't mentioned is wild considering how all over the album she is. Worth being on the list. Didn't blow me away but good example of country.

The story of the album release is messed up. I don't care for his voice and feel that the Emmy Lou Harris vocals keep this interesting. The production and mixing is pretty good. His voice on $1000 wedding is better. Ooh Las Vegas has some bounce. In my Hour of Darkness sounds okay, I just want a dash more feeling in his vocals and a little more stripped down sound. This overall isn't my style, not enough folk or grit in here. Too shiny. This album makes me think of a vinyl brown couch.

Have a soft spot for country but it’s fading

Not wholly dreadful, but the best part of this is Emmylou Harris singing, not dear old Graham. There are moments of real charm and beauty, and many more moments of yer basic hoedown.

more country that is just ok but not for me

So bloody boring; and clearly there are two people of equal prominence on this. Quite funny that Spotify only credits her on one of the tracks.

Kinda boring but I get how people could love this album

In a nutshell: justice for Emmylou Harris. Great lyrics. Gram sounds vulnerable and sincere, albeit twangy. Quite impressed by Emmylou’s contribution to the album. It’s a shame that she didn’t receive the proper credit at time of release because of Gram’s jealous widow. I don’t like country in general, but based on the backstory I can see how it’s important to the development of the genre. Overall: 3/10

Luckily the album was short. Brutal cover of love hurts.

Yee haw! It's ok I guess, but I'm not a country guy. Biggest highlight for me was the moonshine fueled chicken-pickin' guitars, otherwise nothing really stands out on the album.

What an album cover. Despite its 36 minute run time this album still feels like a slog. There seems to be no cohesion with the track sequencing. Love hurts is the obvious standout track but even this only feels suited to be included in some movie or tv shows soundtrack and not much else. There are some catchy moments but the songwriting is basic and mostly doesn't seem to be saying all that much.

I didn't care much for the music, but the guy has a fascinating Wikipedia page about the theft of his corpse from the hospital, followed by a partial cremation.

Never heard of that guy before. Now I know why.

Ei minulle tämä.

Some old style country music I didn’t hate but didn’t like

I guess he influenced everyone...I don't get it myself

I just dont care bruv. Like another comment said, the story of the lead singers widow disliking the other lead singer so much that she removed her from the cover and reduced her writing credit on the album is more interesting

Twangy country is really not for me. There was some nice tracks, Emmylou Harris vocals were very complimentary to Gram Parsons. I find steel guitar very annoying. Pleasant enough, not for me though

Decent record, good songwriting and playing. Nice, concise album.

Not something I normally listen to, but happened to throw on my headphones at 2AM while my baby was screaming. It was relatively calming. Two tears out of five.

Not bad, just not my bag

Zat echt aan Alan Parsons te denken Toen was het country

This really isn't my thing. It's not a bad album, but I could have happily died without listening to this.

70s country. Not for me, except for Love Hurts. That's quite known and is lovely.

Emmylou Harris kind of saves this album. Like, its OK but not great but then Love Hurts plays and it makes the whole thing worth it. Still struggle with giving it 3 stars though, its mostly pretty boring. 2/5

Grievous Angel is pretty average country for the most part, interspersed with some standard rock and roll that does lift the mood and tempo, that's welcome, and it gains positive marks from including Emmylou Harris as well. Raises it to a high 2, not bad, not great, not memorable but a fair enough listen for the half hour or so it lasted.

Yeah, this is pretty standard country. Preferred the Flying Burrito Brothers album (which he was involved in that we had before), not convinced this is on the list for any other reason than he had a bit of a cult following and died very young. Most of the positive reviews on the site are because they like Emmylou Harris, she's great but this isn't. 2/5.

Oh god, Big Nashville Country Rock. Fun fact here: I once slept through a whole show at the Grand Ole Opry, during I don't even remember. My most normal achievement. Now, this one. I could talk myself into developing a bit of an objective appreciation for this album, maybe, if I tried, reading about it, with Emmylou Harris and all that, but I absolutely don't feel like doing so. "Cosmic American Music". What cosmos? The stretch of the parking lot by the pickup truck dealer? Nothing here to me that isn't bog standard big stage Country fare. From the guy who made The Byrds go shit. Sadly, the very essence of this music is to be inoffensive as fuck and at this, it excels, so I can't even give it a 1.

This was very good for what it was. But I'm not sure that I'm interested in this style. Torn between a 2 and a 3. But I don't think I'll listen again.

It wasn't bad, but it was pretty dang country.

Slow sad country. Ew

bit slow but I could forget it was on

I have no idea how this scraped in a 2 - probably Emmylou.

The only reason I won't forget about this album is because of its interesting background. Other than that, it's boring.

a little bit boring - i liked love hurts tho

this is so so so painfully generic it’s not BAD, but it’s definitely not an album i am reaching for on my own, and i found it a bit boring and plain and i feel like i’d feel the same even if i was an avid enjoyer of this album THAT BEING SAID…this could’ve gotten a 3/5 from me if it didn’t get so much worse as it went on, because it wasn’t too bad in the beginning 2-2.5/5

Early country/rock blend. Nice version of Love Hurts

Not the best country album, he seems a little confused.

I'm working hard to not give this album a one-star review because I know that it is well-crafted and delivered sincerely by talented people, but it is absolutely not to my taste either. I'm no fan of the electrified heartland, honky tonk vaguely "mom and apple pie" Americana through the lens of some fool who idealizes a past that never was. So, two-stars then.

Not my first choice for background music while working. Not my 50th choice either. Just not my thing.

Ehhh, not much of interest here to me

A bit yeehaw, but nothing to write home about

Not for me

Not country again.... Why is this here? My ears didn't bleed, so 2*. But I honestly don't see what this pile of unseasoned mashed potatoes has to offer.

Dull C&W most interesting thing was reading some info on the wiki page and I now can't even remember that

Hmmm. Not really for me

Not for me

There were people who revered this guy back in the day. I was not one of them. Honestly, I thought he was boring. I still think it's boring. Thinking back, perhaps this was romantic to a certain kind of man in music. Oh well, takes all types. His harmonies with EmmyLou were sweet though I was never a real fan or hers either. 2 stars.

Boring country music

Boring

Good music

Demasiado country y demasiada steel guitar hasta para mí. Se deja escuchar.

Country is generally not my jam. Neither is this album, but some of the tracks are actually nice to listen to, if I’m on my daily walk in the nearby rural area. Emmylou Harris is amazing on the songs

I'm no country fan and this album hasn't changed that opinion.

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw

This seems indredibly uninspired and honestly designed to be middle of the road and not offending to anyone. The faster tracks are passable, but the slower entries are everything i dislike about country.

I appreciate Gram Parsons for what he did for music. I am just not really a country/rock-country guy.

Seemed pleasant enough if a bit generic, but country music is not my thing

Ah man take me home on that country road and bury me in a shallow grave.

As good as and probably better than any of the gazillion other country albums on this list. Still not a fan of country though.

Not really my thing, but interesting to listen to whilst reading the background of the recording, Gram Parsons' death and Emmylou Harris having her credit removed. Love Hurts.

This album is renowned for combining country western music with rock 'n roll. I hear a bunch of country, maybe a snatch of bluegrass, but not much rock. Not a terrible listen but not my chosen style, either.

I'm sure for the folk that are into the country style of music this is incredible. It's always interesting to hear an artist's album from just before they died, however this does nothing for me.

While I like country, there was nothing in the tracks here that made me enjoy the songs like a Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash did...

I get why it’s on here and that Emmylou Harris is the bright spot, but overall it didn’t land for me.

Mais uma versão country de Love Hurts

Not the sort of thing I’d usually listen to. Bit deeper than your standard country album, I liked some of the more upbeat tracks.

There are some decent moments here and there, mostly his duets with Emmylou Harris, but I fail to see what's so great about this one. Seems like a fairly standard country album filled with covers to me.

This album was so dull I sold my pickup truck and got an office job instead.

Average country rock album. Nothing really bad, but nothing stands out neither. It's as feelgood and as it's inoffensive.

I suppose you have to be a country lover to really like this one. I am not. However, the vocal harmonies with Emmylou Harris are beautiful though, and adds some magic here and there. Without this it would have been boring, especially the religious elements…

Love Hurts is a certified gem, everything else is cousin bangin' music. Are 5 Byrds albums not enough ? We really need every member's solo albums too?

Ugh, this was a rough one to get through. I'm not a big country fan, and I'm not a big fan of cheesy 70s ballads, and this was both. And even though Emmylou Harris has a great voice, something about the combination of her voice with Gram's plus the incessant slide guitar made a lot of the songs sound very sharp and discordant. It just wasn't pleasant to listen to. No thank you. 2/5

whack country gack

Gram Parsons’ fingerprints have been across a few albums on this list now, and his influence on the country rock genre was clearly significant. But when you’re not particularly into country rock, as I’m not, it’s hard to be anything but indifferent about this legacy. There are some nice lines and some pretty harmonies with Emmylou but overall it doesn’t do much for me. 2.5

Country is not really my thing.

Started out as nice enough gentle country, but was kind of forgettable. Had some moments but not enough to make an impact.

wholly unremarkable. Not 'cosmic' at all but unoffensive country.

De man kan muziek maken, maar verder niet mijn ding. Nogal saai

It was okay, country.

Amazed to read he died of a drug overdose. Listening to this borefest I would think he'd ever left his home town, let alone tried anything stronger than bourbon. Thankfully it was short, and it had Emmylou Harris who does have quite a lovely lilt.

Dull. Nice, dull harmonies. Stupid name.

Sounds like School House Rock made a country album.

I've always been surprised by the hype and praise of this album & artist. If it weren't for the sweet sounds of Emmylou Harris, it would fail on a grander scale. Nothing is memorable here or infectious enough to make me ever want to give it a second listen.

Emmylou Harris is phenomenal on this album. The mix is weird but it’s listenable. Gram Parsons seems mediocre and probably would have been playing clubs in his hometown if he hadn’t been from such a privileged (yet cursed) family. Generational trauma is real, sadly Gram was a victim of his own circumstance.

I liked it but it didn’t draw me in.

Country. It's fine I guess.

An absolute classic

Well I'm glad I got through this because I always thought I liked Gram Parsons but now I can't say I do NOT care for his this country rock sound.

Not sure why it’s special; the songs all sound like a thousand other country songs.

Country has to be the most uniteresting genre. It appears to show very little, if any, evolution or development from 1950 to 2020. This, however, is particularly dull. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Love Hurts Date listened: 09/03/24

Not bad but feels like hours.

good ol' boring country

Not the worst country album I've heard

Not really a fan of country. Bit too slow. Maybe would like this artist live.

Would probably like it more if I was more into country, but fairly respectable. Tops tracks: Brass Buttons, In My Hour of Darkness

While EmmyLou is never less than stellar and I adore the verve of honky tonk piano with a good twangly guitar, this didn’t particularly resonate.

Bland album, but the story of what happened after he died was mind blowing.

a non-ideal soundtrack to Immanuel Kant's "On the miscarriage of all philosophical trials in theodicy"

Not so Country myself but looks ok

Can see why country music fans would appreciate this, but I’m not one of them.

This is viewed a succesful hybrid between country and rock but it sounds like any old country to me. Fave track: Return of the Grievous Angel

I hate everything about this. Next.

not my thing, not terrible but not really notable in any way. 2.4.

kind of boring

Wasn't really in the mood... Sorry 🤷🏿‍♂️

Too twangy

Honestly, kinda bored

Country music - lots of twanging guitars. Some nice harmonies though.

2 albums and then the continuation of the country album by the Byrds? WTF? At least it was relatively short. Heard Love Hurts and immediately thought of Nazareth Hair of the Dog album. Way underrated album with Miss Misery as the best song. Better than the title track. Beggars Day and Please Don't Judas Me a couple other great tunes. Learned something new too. Love Hurts is from the Everly Brothers, not this guy. Best thing about this album is it made want to go back and listen to Nazareth. This dude or at least this album wasn't good. Ill give 1.5 but round to 2 for Love Hurts, even though this version wasn't very good. 2

Not objectively bad, but I just couldn’t get into it at all.

I already had a personal bias against Graham Parsons. So this album was never going to land with me. That being said, it's not without merit. However a wanna be sad cowboy is unbelievably lame. I don't believe in the stories he tells. I won't listen to this again

glad this album is short because i didn’t like it

This wasn't much but the story behind was interesting. Emmylou Harris got credits wiped even though she's on every track, the cover got changed. Oh, and this is the second album on the list with a version of "Love Hurts." By logic of these being the "must hear" albums of history, does that mean that's one of the most "must hear" songs ever? And does that mean Nazareth is going to appear on the list?

I’ve never liked country music. This is a good example of why.

Joa 2 Sterne

Ich vermute hinter dem ganzen Country-Gedudel verstecken sich mindestens 2 gute Songs. Positiv überrascht.

It's fine, but it's just boring country music. Maybe one or two of the songs I would have liked if they were a different genre. My favourite song was Brass Buttons.

I didn’t enjoy this. But only because it’s shit.

I generally like acoustic music and was looking forward to this but it's just boring, mid tempo and beige songs. Not anything I would revisit in any mood.

Not for me

5/10, didn't like this form of country that much. Inclusion of a live performance on this album was not a highlight

Poor deity fearing Americana.

So many people and artists I respect love Gram Parsons, but sadly, I can't get past the music being a bit dull and meandering. Americana like this just always leaves me cold, sadly.

Just a bit too boring and uninteresting. It not difficult to listen too, and slightly unmelodic at times, but the track themselves, for what they are... country-folk, tend to blend together with nothing that really stands out as being enjoyable.

Country gówno, smuty. 2/5 może 3

Aika karmeeta countya yleismeininki, mutta noi vähän rokkaavammat raidat ihan jees 2/5

Deze plaat vind ik nogal slaapweekend. Maar had toch 2 leuks nummers

A legend but not for me, songs are just to C&W for me, I live the city life.

an album I've put on about 6 or so times, so I can try to get it under the skin, to see what I'm missing. All I've come away with was that our other Gram Parsons album was better. The Emmylou Harris features are the highlight for me– she's been a surprising find on this list. I just don't think I remember a single song on repeated listens, except for Love Hurts. It's all a blur. Pleasant listen, but then again, we have enough of that. 2/5

one of these names I know but don't know his work. Definitely had its moments but I think I prefer other offerings from the genre he helped develop

Just more boring white dude prog crap.

Well, I didn't like Flying Burrito Brothers, so it's not a surprise I don't like Gram Parsons' album. It sounds like a classic country album, which means it is mediocre at best. Struggled to finish it, and I'm happy I stopped trying.

This never broke through for me aside from good musicianship? Are we rating things on that level? Nothing against Gram Parsons but I like his brother's project better.

Influential artist in his time and after, but not my cup of tea.

Weird country shit

Not my cuppa but p easy on the ears

Leans very country. $1000 Wedding: good ballad. Also liked Ooh Las Vegas. ** 1/2

Everything I’ve read makes me think I would like this, but I don’t.

But too country for my tastes

Apparently a cut above the rest of the C+W crowd, but, in reality, much the same. Feel sorry for the unthanked vocalist who backs him up considerably on this

Not my thang. Is this the OG Love Hurts? (2.5/5)

Typical country album.

With the album title of Grievous Angel and songs such as In My Hour of Darkness and Return of the Grievous Angel I was expecting some Melodic Doom Metal or some Prog Rock. Perhaps I was thinking of the ‘other Parsons’ and his project. This was not it.

I have to think this is the OG Love Hurts song on here. Hate to say it but I like Def Leppards better. This was a fine album, but not sure what makes it on this list besides the wild story about this guy's passing.

Not all harmonies are good harmonies. 2/5

Listened through a few times. Didn't move me. The live track in the middle seemed like a strange choice. Generic middle of the road country.

Basic bitch country. Skuffa over at I Can't Dance ikkje va samme sang som den Genesis-sangen. Og skuffa over at han skreiv Love Hurts

I still refuse to believe that Country is a popular enough genre to justify having about 50 entries on this list. Imagine all the cool Asian, African and Eastern European albums they could have put on there instead. Not the worst album I've ever heard, but.. come on man. Imagine dying and your last words being "My only regret in life is that I never got to hear that 1974 Gram Parsons album". You're banished from the omniverse, old man. Also negative points for making me think that this was going to be something cool, because the title "Grievous Angel" is metal as fuck. Foiled again.

This album displays some of the down home, aww shucks-ness that I hate about traditional country. I Can’t Dance, Love Hurts, and Ooh Las Vegas are the only tracks worth a hoot.

Best part was when the album ended and Spotify played Nick Drake after

Really didn’t like this at the start. Came around on it by the end tho.

Was ok to listen to kinda had a country blues kinda funk to it.

One star for country. Another for not being the trashy country that exists today. I didn't really enjoy this.

Pedal steel was cool. Nothing groundbreaking. Vocals SUCKED. Kara wanted to give a 1.

Kort plaatje, maar goed ook want echt boeiend was het niet.

Waarom moet een countryplaat doorgaans meestal uitmonden in gezapige, jengelende bleh-muziek?

Wonderful to hear Emmylou Harris unveiled on this album which is enjoyable in parts but ultimately a little frivolous to be truly meaningful. The loss of Parsons too sad, thought, as this showed much promise - much more would have followed, much more to give.

Country aaaahhhh

Nigh worthless

"Out with the truckers, the kickers and the cowboys" ... *skip* Nope. It picks up a little bit after that first atrocious song, but I haven't found too many redeeming factors on this album. A lot of it is stockstandard country, with a little interesting step-outs to bluegrass and Rock&Roll. Gram Parsons life was a lot more interesting than his music.

With a name like grievous angel I thought this might be a Scandinavian doom metal concept album but it's a largely schmaltzy country thing. There was something about it that was slightly more interesting than similar albums but I couldn't tell you what.

I hate to give a 2 star review but this album just did nothing for me. It's not my genre, to be fair. I was a little intrigued by the description of "cosmic American music" but this honestly just sounds like a standard country album to me. I'm sure it has its fans but this one wasn't for me.

2.5. Seems ok.

Country-rock, udmærket

Not liking his country side the folk thing is much better

Not one decent moment or one half decent track. Really hard work. Country, but really poor country.

it's like a bowl of overcooked butter noodles

Too much twang for me. Way more country than rock.

This kind of country rock blend is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I’m glad this one is behind me.

may God have mercy on anyone who enjoys country music

Interesting if you’re a fan of country. I’m not really.

4 songs in and really don’t like this. Definitely not my kind of music. Also every song feels like it’s a different style and belongs in a different album. Way more country/ folk than rock like wiki says. Done with the album now, still didn’t like it. There were a few songs which I thought were okay, but nothing sticks out as great. Frankly don’t even know why this would be on the list at all, vocals are the only good part and they kind of suck.

severly not my thing

Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 1.25 (D) Oh joy another country album. Reading about its production was fascinating, and it lead me down a tangent on a cover that I knew I heard before, and now I have no idea what version of it I already knew! Not only that, there was an S tier song buried in here! Too bad about the REST OF THE COUNTRY WHINE! Track Thoughts: "Return of the Grievous Angel" C- My god its another country album. The twang of the voice is killer on the male lead, but the female harmony stands in sharp contrast... I dont know if its a stylistic choice to have a more slurred, relaxed (read less disciplined on hitting your notes) lead... But it does just make me wish for better vocal control. I do enjoy a fiddle and piano ditty, but this is just Generic Country and it makes me wish for anything else. At least it isnt ENTIRELY drenched in slide guitar... though the picked guitar solo is still too bend heavy for my taste. "Hearts on Fire" C And speak of drenched in slide guitar. Having a, what, vibraphone? That ringing instrument providing occasional accompaniment is Unique at the very least, but its not enough to elevate YET ANOTHER generic country ballad. The female singer is putting in such a more listenable performance, she has way more dynamic range, she is the real star here. I am at least intrigued by the song, but boy is it just not my cup of tea. "I Can't Dance" A I am now collecting a series of "I cant dance" songs I guess, along with KGLW's "I hate dancing", whatever the antithesis of Weird Al's "That Boy Could Dance" is. Welcome to me prasing a novelty song, shame its so dang short! This is more of a rock song, and there is something going on whith the rhythem of the song, the way the melody initially feels a little out of beat with the rest of the song, not dragging, but just slightly unaligned from how you'd EXPECT the lyrics to fit. And then as the song progresses you get 'into the grove' so to speak. Its also got a bit of a surf rock style guitar solo... Yeah this is a shining bright spot on the album for me! A diamond in the rough. "Brass Buttons" C+ Sometimes a song is just a list of things you know? I like other list songs; I listen to my fair share of Father John Misty. Its evocative in its sparseness. Too laid back for my tastes; the lazy slide guitar is less offensively used here. "$1000 Wedding" C To do a $1000 wedding is cheap as hell these days... Just a stray thought, trying to not dwell on the Generic Country Blues tune. That said, this is a hell of a sad sad song, but its no "Alone Again (Naturally)", but if you're In The Mood for something like it, I bet this hits. I actually think its a missed opportunity to NOT have female vocal accompaniment in this song and this song alone, as thematically resonant as that would be. "Medley Live from Northern Quebec" D- Is this guy canadian? Why are we getting, not just a French Canadian song, but a NORTHERN french canadian song, ugh. I'll be the judge of this melody. Goddamnit I actually like this, its got some get up and go to it. The yodelling is not unappreciated. I dont know why I thought this WOULDNT be a live recording. The problem is this is a MEDLEY, in this case being two songs stitched together, and while the FIRST part is an upbeat and energetic tune, the SECOND half is more slow plodding generic country balads. At least when listening to a few stitched together irish reels and jigs they keep the pace up, often cases building. This is just a letdown. On modern hardware, I now gotta reach into my pocket to skip when a song I otherwise would like to add as a single gets to the back half. Bleh. Do I split the difference between the two ratings, or deduct extra points from the second for ruining the first? "Love Hurts" F This song has escaped containment. I try not to do too much googling, but yeah turns out this is a cover of a song from the 60s which was more famously covered by a BUNCH of different folks. So to judge it as a stand alone song? More slow sappy country dreck. Do I want to do a complete "covers tasting platter"? Not really in the scope for this but you know what I will make an exception for such a weird album already. The rankings go: 1) Original (Everly Brothers): Not what I would even call Country! Its just a pop song! 2) Jim Capaldi: Oh wow, a funky almost disco-esque beat? Yeah okay this is a strong contender for best, but I actually still think the original eeks out the competition. 3) Nazareth: Oh yeah lets get fuckin ROCKED. Guitar tone like "Creep" and who doesnt like that tone? 4) Roy Orbison: The worst vocal performance (too much vibrato), and I actually like the more stripped back instrumentation on the original, this is a bit too much "film score" music 5) Gram Parsons: Blech. Country. See notes above. Cher: Holy super over indulgent much. Sorry Cher. Not today. 6) Don McLean: You get the worst of all worlds, too country stripped back too far past the point of charm of the original, then too orchestra... it walks you through every middling cover and doesnt stand out on its own. I now know that I would listen to 4 other versions of this exact same song before I ever hear this one! F! "Ooh Las Vegas" S- Speaking of the get up and go on the first half of Northern Quebec! I'll take more of this rip roarin kind of blues riff! Gawd DANG that guitar solo, make it YELL boi! No fuck it, in comparison to everything else in the album this stands head and shoulders above the rest, its S, I dont know if it'd be S as a stand alone, but hot damn does this song rip. "In My Hour of Darkness" F Country Gospel Music. Kill me. I am checking out now. Sorry I do not HAVE to force myself to listen to this. I can just turn it off. BUT that would be quitter talk. What if there really is some musical idea, some singular riff or tone or interesting happenstance contained within? I am committing to listening to EVERY SONG no mater how painful. I've got some WEIRD stuff coming up surely. So writing this out is protest for letting it wash away into the background. F Tier, I hate this exact sound because of lingering cult upbringing baggage, but done soaked in whiny country twang, its acrid air on my ears.

this must be the mars attacks song that makes the alien brains explode. i'm the alien.

I give anyone permission to punch me square in the dick if they hear me play this album again.

Kill me

i wish my heart was on fire

Another slide guitar infused garbage country album. The one classic song on the album, Love Hurts, is again ruined by annoying slide guitar. 1 star

Awful. Twee country music sucks.

A bit too yea haw for me. I was considering scoring this a 2, maybe even a 3. And then I read that Parsons called his music style "Cosmic American". Pretentious bullshit – and for that, combined with a needless waste of a life and talent, you get a 1

Laid-back country rock built on gentle acoustic guitars, pedal steel, steady rhythms, and warm duet vocals unfolds with relaxed, traditional ease. Listening feels like sitting on a quiet rural porch where the same slow breeze moves through the air for hours. The atmosphere is calm and sincere, but the tunes often drift by without much distinction, leaving the overall experience somewhat boring.

For a brief second, after seeing the cover, I was hopeful this might be prog or – even better – some early 70s synth ambient. Then I checked Wikipedia and saw "country". What an absolute letdown, fucking hell. …and to no one’s surprise, it’s shite. Well, not actual shite; I can tell it’s probably perfectly fine country but since this list – like all criticism in general, in the end – is subjective, I have to give it a mere one star simply because it doesn’t do anything for me and I have very, very low tolerance for country in general.

Not really a country guy. Not at all a country guy actually. So this album was doomed from the start for me. If there's some great and amazing context I'm missing here then that sucks. I just don't like country music. I do like the Las Vegas song. Once again...I don't like country.

Unlistenable

Boring

I’m not a fan of country music, steel guitar is like nails on a chalkboard

With more like this, I won't reach 1001.

This is the kind of sound I personally do NOT enjoy in country albums, but reading the background was so interesting it makes me want to bump this album up to 2 stars. I won't, but it's crazy how that is.

Not a fan of country, this did not change that

... Uy, perdón, me dormí 2/10

Nicht meine Musik.

More American nonsense

Didn't like the last Gram Parsons suggestion

Not really my cup of tea

Not for me at all. I've said it so many times now, I'm not a fan of Country (yes, there are exceptions but Gram isn't one of them) and mixing it with rock is blasphemous. Didn't listen to it all, I couldn't.

Not for me

Not my thing personally. Love hurts is a beautiful song and this record has an excellent version. The couple of tracks at the start are pleasant enough also, but in general this record doesn't thrill me and I'd just so much rather spend my time with something else.

I'm a metalhead, I don't like this album

For a long time I would never remember between Alan Parsons and Gram Parsons which I didnt really like. And its Gram. For sure Gram.

Just bad

It's country music, FFS. Can't stand almost any of it.

Album is fine, I just personally don't like the country sound

It’s a no

Has this list been made by the whitest man alive? This record is dull, uninspired, tepid.

Help me

Everyone involved in making this garbage needs to be punched in the face.

Cliche country. Another album to remind why I don't like country music.

Country noooooooo. 1/5

oof I generally like country music but this is painful.

I don't get it. I remember reading about Gram Parsons back in the days when you couldn't immediately listen to any music you liked, and thinking he sounded really interesting. People always made the music out to be some mystical, vital combination of country, rock, psychedelia etc that transcended all. I was confused and disappointed when I heard what he actually did. Cheesy, syrupy country with little of the other stuff promised. I'm still confused now. Not sure what people hear in this, but it's not for me. There are people who do country better, and this doesn't add anything else to make it worth my time...

You guys are kind of on a rough streak

Honky tonky hot trash

Nice country sound from both the instrument choices to the singing. But the singer sometimes feels like he sings off beat and there is something missing when I compare to other country artist i enjoy but I can't put my finger on exactly what.

Not for me..

Ugh, country sucks. List has a hard-on for this guy. Must be a huge Birds fan given that there are a large number of Birds albums plus Flying Burrito Brothers plus this shitty solo album on this list. It says something that the most popular version of Love Hurts is a cover by Nazareth.

Ummm, hated the byrds and the magical flying burito or something Why did he think going solo was a good idea

Boy I really did not enjoy this. Like I turned it off.

So fucking boring. A pain to get through. Good singing. 1.5.. rounds down to ONE!

Very forgettable

Absolutely zero reason for this to be on this list

I just cannot listen to full songs... 1/5

Nope. From the first note I knew this was not for me.

Ugh, I can't get with country. Sorry.

nope i get that its influential and that there are a couple of songs that are recognizable. nope

I was genuinely looking forward to this, on account that I had no preconceptions, and no knowledge of the artist. But it's country rock, so in the bin you go... Heard before ❌️ feels like I have though Listened this time ❌️ a bit, but no Revisit ❌️ Just no ★☆☆☆☆

Best song: Love Hurts This may be someone's thing, but it is not mine. At least I learned Love Hurts wasn't written by Nazareth. I never cared but now I can say I know.

Kind of a country version of Val Doonican. Tedious and bland.

I've already had to put up with The Flying Burrito Brothers' bullshit, I really didn't need this one too.

No me gusto

Not for me this. Flicked through a few songs but couldn't give anything more than a few seconds. Maybe something Nana Misty would be into

Not really my vibe. I do like a bit of country but this didn't resonate with me

This demonstrates all the things I don't like about country. Rating: 1

Aside from the fact the man betrayed his wife, this album definitely leans more into Country, not Rock, and that's a no-no. Favorite Track: "Oooh Las Vegas".

I really hated this one. Felt like I was back in South Carolina in the worst of ways. I did like the wiki tea on the widow removing Mary Lou from the cover on some petty vibe

Country-style music might be a thing in America. I'm not really into it.

bonus track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6HzoUcx3eo 1/5

Don't really like the country aspect but I will admit it's quite a vibe 1/5

Wow. So I'm not a fan of country overall. I enjoy the old stuff. Willie Nelson was always played growing up. I can't make it through a whole song so far. I'm hoping the lady singing has a solo song in this, she sounds alright then the guy starts caterwauling and I'm done. His subdued stuff is ok, Brass Buttons was decent as was $1000 dollar wedding. Neither will make it into my rotation but they are bright spots for me. The album is better after the first couple of songs. It does make me want to listen to George Jones again.

46/1001 Country music. Even when they are not singing about going on down the freeway, sitting on porches, alcoholism and comparing an attractive girl to a flower, it sounds like they are anyway. Lauded way beyond its worth, this is a deeply dull album, I simply cannot see the attraction. Always seems to crop up on best-of lists and frequently gets billed as "alt-country". Maybe it just doesn't translate to the UK that well, but I fail to see anything alternative about this, save for the fact his lifestyle led to his early demise on a lethal drug and alcohol bender. Yeah, he was in The Byrds - right about the time their albums frequently became a pile of unadulterated cack. Even the cover looks like a badly done funeral order of service. Yuck. Next.

No, thank you

Shockingly bad
