The College Dropout
Kanye West
I’ve been waiting for this one. I’ve read some of the reviews of this album, and it’s kind of funny (?) to me. Almost all the reviews from 2020 and 2021 praise the album and the artist, while those from 2022 and beyond seem less supportive of him (wonder why?). I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve the criticism—or even a boycott, for that matter—because he probably does. But it’s interesting, and kind of sad, to see the shift in perspective regarding one of this century's most innovative and influential artists.
His first release comes from a time long before he managed to make the whole world turn against him, and I am at least trying to separate his older art from the person he’s become today. But I’m not by any means saying that everyone else should try, cause goddamn he makes it difficult.

Bad
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson's "Bad," released in 1987, stands as a pivotal moment in his storied career, showcasing his evolution as an artist while maintaining the infectious pop appeal that catapulted him to global superstardom. While it's often considered a notch below iconic predecessors "Off The Wall" and "Thriller," "Bad" holds its ground as an essential piece of the MJ legacy. For many, including myself, it competes closely with "Dangerous" for the third or fourth spot in his discography rankings.
The album kicks off with the titular track "Bad," a bold and braggadocious anthem that solidifies Jackson’s persona as a dominant force in music. This is followed by "The Way You Make Me Feel," a groovy, irresistible tune that captures his unparalleled ability to mix romance and rhythm seamlessly. Tracks like “Man in the Mirror” offer introspective and socially-conscious commentary, highlighting Jackson's growth not only as a musician but as a human being seeking change and impact.
"Bad" is an album laden with hits that defined a generation. "Smooth Criminal" is arguably one of Jackson's most compelling tracks, boasting a signature bassline, innovative production techniques, and storytelling prowess. "Dirty Diana" sees Jackson delve into raw rock influences, proving his capacity to transcend pop boundaries and showing versatility that would later become key in his musical narrative.
Yet, amidst this impressive lineup, there are moments where the album falters slightly. "Speed Demon" and "Just Good Friends" don't quite reach the heights of other tracks, feeling somewhat dwarfed by the magnetism of the surrounding songs. While "Speed Demon" is an enjoyable piece with its energetic beat, it doesn't leave the lasting impression that many other MJ classics do. Similarly, "Just Good Friends," despite a collaboration with the talented Stevie Wonder, lacks the depth and memorability expected from such a partnership.
In conclusion, "Bad" is a testament to Michael Jackson's enduring genius. It may not eclipse the masterful heights of "Off The Wall" or "Thriller," but it holds its own with a collection of tracks that have become cultural staples. Despite some lesser moments, the album remains a vital component of Jackson's creative output, providing fans with a rich blend of pop, rock, and introspection. For those who cherish the King of Pop's work, "Bad" is undeniably an album worth celebrating, landing comfortably as one of his best, if not quite at the apex.

Searching For The Young Soul Rebels
Dexys Midnight Runners
"Searching For The Young Soul Rebels" by Dexys Midnight Runners offers a vibrant burst of energy and soul-infused enthusiasm, characteristic of the early '80s. I liked it, but I won't go back to it. While it captures the youthful spirit effectively, the album feels maybe a bit one-dimensional. Its driving intensity and consistent theme might appeal initially, but lack the variety necessary to hold long-term interest.

Melodrama
Lorde
"Melodrama" by Lorde stands out as one of the best pop albums of the last decade, showcasing her ability to craft deeply personal and introspective narratives wrapped in lush, inventive production. Released in 2017, the album captures the emotional turbulence and introspection of young adulthood, all while maintaining a sharp pop sensibility.
Lorde's songwriting shines throughout "Melodrama," with each track offering a unique blend of vulnerability and confidence. Songs like "Green Light" and "Supercut" highlight her knack for catchy melodies and poignant storytelling, while quieter tracks like "Liability" reveal her depth and emotional range. The production, helmed by Jack Antonoff, complements her vision perfectly, creating a rich and immersive sonic landscape.
In essence, "Melodrama" is a beautifully crafted exploration of heartbreak, self-identity, and resilience. It's an album that resonates on multiple levels and demonstrates Lorde's evolution as an artist. Its impact and artistry make it a standout in modern pop music, showcasing the power of authentic storytelling in connecting deeply with audiences.

The Blue Nile
"A Walk Across The Rooftops" by The Blue Nile is an album that offers a unique and atmospheric experience, blending elements of synth-pop and jazz with a touch of melancholy. Released in 1984, it presents a rich soundscape that is both haunting and beautiful, leaving a lasting impression on those who venture through its tracks.

Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd
Finally! Probably the closest anyone ever has come to perfection! This album means a lot to me and it is probably my favourite of all time. "Wish You Were Here," released in 1975, is a haunting exploration of absence, loss, and the existential struggles of the human experience.
Musically, "Wish You Were Here" showcases Pink Floyd at their finest, masterfully weaving together elements of progressive rock, blues, and psychedelic influences. Each song feels meticulously crafted, yet the album as a whole maintains a fluidity that welcomes the listener on an emotive journey. The production is nothing short of brilliant, a testament to the band's creative vision and the exceptional talents of producer Alan Parsons.
The album’s exploration of themes such as alienation, authenticity, and the music industry itself resonates profoundly in today’s world, making it ever-relevant. "The Welcome to the Machine" and "Have a Cigar" serve as sharp critiques of the commercial side of the music business, touching on the struggles artists face in remaining true to their art amidst external pressures.
What truly sets "Wish You Were Here" apart for me is its depth and sincerity. Each listen reveals new layers of meaning, urging the listener to reflect on their own experiences of love, loss, and the complex nature of human connection. It strikes a perfect balance between introspection and universality, transforming personal sorrow into a shared experience.
In conclusion, "Wish You Were Here" is not just an album; it’s a profound emotional experience that captures the essence of longing and the search for authenticity in a world fraught with disconnection. Every track is a masterpiece in its own right, yet together they create a symphony of sound and emotion that leaves an indelible mark on the heart. It is, without a doubt, a quintessential piece of music history—one that will forever hold a special place within my soul.
