Reviews (page 12 of 13)
fucking beautiful some of the songs are shit
The album is just catchy enough to keep you listening and just deep enough to keep you thinking. I personally think "Miles From Nowhere" is the standout track, but I complete understand why the stand-out hits ('Where Do The Children Play?', 'Hard Headed Woman;, 'Wild World' and 'Father An Son') are what they are as well. I honestly have no idea how the Flaming Lips could claim that 'Fight Test' was not directly *ehm* "influenced" *ehm* by 'Father And Son'. Uncanny similarities aside, the album was a good listen on it's own two feet.
Folky goodness - some Jethro Tull style vocal embellishments made me smile. I’m also reminded of the busker who played Wild World non stop for years outside my old office.
6/10
This is the best album of Cat Stevens. Despite the very ugly album cover it contains some pretty songs like the classics "Father and Son" and "Wild World". Also nice is "Where Do the Children Play?". The rest of the tracks are rather unremarkable.
Enjoyable folky fare.
Chai tea flavored mornings
Very pleasant
This sounds way more modern than it is. Sufjan Stevens vibes.
He is aiming for some big songs here This is serious songwriting stuff, he means it Father and Son is huge This is the kind of stuff people really care about
Used to love this album after watching Harold and Maude. Doesn't really hold up years later, every song sounds too much like a Bank commercial (this ain't the fault of Yusuf, its just that his unique pop poet style has been appropriated for commercial gain)
- songs on here would be great for the spring - very chill - not really a get up a busy a move album - if i knew the lyrics i would be singing them on full max
Ok - not really for me but harmless.
there are a couple of really good songs but the album as a whole is kinda boring
Jedan divan album.
September 10, 2021 "Wild World" is obviously a classic. The rest of this album is pretty good, with one or two standouts ("Sad Lisa", "Father and Son")
Fine, pretty mellow entry. Wild World certainly stands higher than the rest. The rest is very listenable, but a bit forgettable.
Instrumentation was okay but the melodies overall were fantastic.
Very beautiful folk album.
Not really my thing but I liked it. Weird inflection on words sounded like trolling and I appreciate that. I'm a big fan of mispronounced names.
Cat Stevens is great and I'm glad I got to listen, but a bit slow.
Cat Stevens is always good to listen to. 3/5
Father And Son.
'70 blassic Pretty chill
Loved it! Fun to listen the whole album for some good oldies feels. I knew the song Wild World but the rest were new to me.
Chill album, a little folk-y at times for me but still some all-time classics on here from Mr. Cat Stevens. 3 stars.
Actually amazing album that falls flat from filler
Really enjoyed it, will revisit
Short and lovely.
I had to downvote this to three stars as I woke this morning and couldn’t remember more than a handful of tracks but it’s still lovely stuff
Not really for me. It was fine though.
A chilled listen and some classics in there.
3/5 there were some kind of interesting song, but ultimately not something to push it over the edge
Can't be mad at this. Good listen.
- very calming, lets SIP A TEA TOGETHER - ooh baby its a wild world...du udu du dudun
Classic 70s folk. BT: Where Do the Children Play?, Wild World, Tea for the Tillerman
The title track is an obvious tune (mainly because of Extras...) but I did enjoy the whole album. V easy to listen to.
Ça m’a déçu.
Not bad
"I know a lot of fancy dancers People who can glide you on a floor They move so smooth but have no answers When you ask, "Why'd you come here for?"" (Hard headed woman) "Well I found myself alone Hoping someone would miss me Thinking about my home and the last woman to kiss me" (On the road to find out) Todo en este disco me resulta más familiar de lo que pensaba que iba a ser. Buena escucha, la verdad.
Better than expected
I was pleasantly surprised by this. Folk with a hint of prog with some fine arrangements
🤔🤔🤔 7/10
"Wild Word" by far the best and most popular song. Rest of the album is alright - nothing crazy. 6/10.
Folk.
Mon hit: Wild world, classique
Alright
meh
Never listened to this album. Know Cat Stevens for several famous track... Top track: Sad Lisa
Nice and mellow. I used to hate this, but I think it is growing on me.
Better than I was expecting, but I've never really been able to get into Cat Stevens
Wild world. Sweet folk
Wild World and Father And Son are the two hit songs.
Fav Song: Hard Headed Woman
Solid
Cat Stevens' voice reminds me a lot of Eddie Vedder's. It's a measured tone to the songs, but holds a lot of meaning and emotion in the words
Some good tunes
This was lame but also cool? Just little ditties on the acoustic and clean singing. Really wussy and a bit sickly sweet, but can't give it less than 3/5.
The album cover is fun. MKAYYYY I didn't know Wild World eas original from him! Update: not really memorable. I don't think I'd listen to it again lol
Wild World and Father and Son are nice. That's really about all I can say... Just a "nice" album. That did virtually nothing for me and at times honestly kind of grated, that gentle sing-song vocal on Into White and Sad Lisa just wasn't for me.
Blah. Not for me.
Having lost my biological father in 2013. My step father (AD, alternate dad as he call himself. I hate the term step) & my father-in-law both in their twilight years. Myself a year away from 50 and my own son will lose me sooner than later. GOSH DAMN “Father and Son” fucking destroys me, but I love it.
Mehhh...just okay. 2.75 rounded down to 2.
Good music, but too long and different music. Didn't understand it fully.
Miles from Nowhere was a highlight. This album feels like it should be right up my alley, but sometimes I feel he becomes preachy/holier-than-thou (ironic coming from a Bob Dylan fan).
Nota: 3,5/10 musicas notaveis: HARD HEADED WOMAN, WILD WORLD, SAD LISA, WHERE THE CHILDREN PLAY
316/1089 3 songs in and it’s not quite gripping me, idk it’s a bit too twee or something for me, i’m not quite hooked yet Sad Lisa might me hooking me though?? i like this more melancholic piano-led sound from him, i like the drama and it would fit in a game like Death Stranding/Horizon Forbidden West with some dramatic landscapes after that there’s more twee ish music that isn’t super interesting to me. THEN Father and Son comes on and this is a song i knew beforehand likely from Guardians of the Galaxy (but not by name or artist) and it’s just really beautiful i also know the title track and it’s crazy short?! it’s a really sweet moment faves: sad lisa, father and son 28/100
It was just ordinary. But I think the album jacket is my style.
There's a very twee, saccharine sheen to this record and an early mention of a 'cosmic train' seemed to set the tone for the rest of the album. There was a cover of Wild World in the 80s by Maxi Priest - had that version never existed, I might have been able to tolerate this album more than I did. I like a good singer/songwriter record, but not this one. It's not all bad, but it's mostly bad.
I know he’s talented, but I don’t like this. It makes me feel stupid. It’s not my type of music. It doesn’t represent the time I live in.
The songwriting is there, but i’m not sure the vocals work for me and that drags the whole thing down
In theory I should love this. But Mr. Yusuf's voice doesn't do much for me. Espescially with that reverb effect. 🤮 these songs are floating right past me. a stranger on an innertube humming to themselves. do like "into white" and "father and son" wish there was more vocal harmonies
most other people's thoughts on this album, apparently: "i remember this album from my childhood, it's great!" "this is the best song ever!" "Cat Stevens is one of the greatest musicians ever!" me: "this sounds like a Peter Gabriel song" "this sounds like a Genesis song" "this is trying a little too hard to sound like a Genesis song" "i could be listening to Genesis right now" 4/10 FAVOURITE SONGS: UH... LONGER BOATS AND /MAYBE/ I MIGHT DIE TONIGHT... I GUESS LEAST FAVOURITE SONGS: WILD WORLD BUT ONLY LIKE, A LITTLE BIT
Hard to get past all the baggage and listen to this one. I was trying to remember the source of my vague dislike of Cat Stevens, and then I heard Wild World.
The best part of this album is the cover. How is this guy a classic singer songwriter he can’t write for shit. I enjoyed Miles From Nowhere musically more than the other songs but was “I can make my own rules” not already a cliche in the seventies, and is there really a need to clarify that extremely trite lyric by immediately following it with “the ones I choose?” You think we didn’t understand what you meant by “make my own rules?” Do you think I’m stupid? Look at me. Do you think I’m fucking stupid? Not every line of a singer songwriter album has to be trying for something new but this is how almost every line feels, across the entire album. Nothing individually sounds interesting and nothing works together to sound interesting. “I don’t want to work away, doing what they all say.” Come up with one original or interesting lyric you are a singer songwriter that is your job. The instrumentals are nice but not good enough to make up for any of this. What’s with Sad Lisa using the most generic imagery ever to describe a sad woman and then coming in with violins to re-emphasize the core and only idea of the song which is that Lisa is, in case you forgot, sad. I guess Longer Boats is alright, Into White is fine too. This album feels like a random Guy who had never written a song was locked in a room and forced to write it. This album feels like it was written from a 101 Songwriting Prompts listicle you get by googling “songwriting prompts.”“Look at me, I am old, but I’m happy / and all the times I’ve cried keeping things inside.” KEEPING THINGS INSIDE HUH. “THINGS.” CRIED/INSIDE. REALLY. WOW FASCINATING INSIGHTS YUSUF/CAT STEVENS. THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING THESE NEW IDEAS TO THE WORLD. I liked Peace Train.
some classics but not my groove
no.
nostalgia, peace, kitty cat, free spirited, Town Troubadour,
Fraco.
country vibes, aint the best
132. ok
Not doing too much for me. Inoffensive but nothing special.
I don't like it. He's only ever read Dylan Thomas, and chicks in the late 60s still thought Dylan Thomas was some sexy-ass poetry, so he goes all-in on overwrought metaphors and pseudoprofundities for half an hour or so without a shred of irony or humor. Maybe he gets better when he converts to Islam?
Not really my thing not a fan of the vocals and sappy ness
ehh it sounds ok
Cross-country trainride. Sunshine and fields.
Ok
well tea wasn't meant for me to begin with
He's got a nice, easy-listening voice, but I'd only choose listen to this if I knew I was on my way out. Deathbed music.
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
Highlights: Hard Headed Woman, Wild World, Miles From Nowhere Very ass take on folk. The style was so monotonous that it's practically a lullaby which fits the childish esthetics of the album cover. And it wasn't even all that interesting lyrically. It didn't feel all that wise or whatever else folk is supposed to be... I kinda liked the inspirational vibe of On the Road to Find Out, but it dragged on too long for it to be a highlight. Even the highlights weren't all that highlighty. I don't think that even half of them will remain in rotation. Pretty disappointed since I really liked Wild World prior to listening to the whole record.
Wasn’t for me
Halt irgendwie langwilig gsi
Ich glaub ich mag eif fast kei singer/songwriter musig
Mid
I can see why it's "good", but it's frankly more boring than interesting.
Le doy 2/5 a Tea for the Tillerman. It was nice, easy listening pero nothing really stood out for me. Me gusto la letra but thats about it
Pas trop ma came
Not really my kind of thing. Somehow sentimental and patronising at the same time. Some nice acoustic guitar. I'd rather be listening to Simon and Garfunkel. 5.2 Fav track: Into White Least Fav: Father and Son
It's Ooohoohookaaheeyheyyahhheyy!
It was ok, obviously love Father and son, absolute banger, but the rest didn’t excite me
Vibes, don’t see myself reaching for it, but maybe on a mellow sunny yet cold day
I thought I liked Cat Stevens but I don’t think I do actually. This was a tough listen. The Wind kicked in and I was like oh I like this one however I thought I’d heard a sound bite of it but that is simply the whole song so it felt more like a jingle than a record and I didn’t care for any of the other tracks any more than that. I found it lyrically basic and musically forgettable. I love folk music, I love acoustic guitars , I love singer songwriters… I did not love this.
I've never been able to enjoy Wild World. Yes Cat Stevens has a nice voice and is good at writing pleasant tunes but I'm just not a fan
Mid
It’s got that sixties vocal sound and production that makes it super dated rather than timeless, although some of the songs are good.
Meh 2/10, too "calm", boring
I really am not a singer songwriter guy tbh. I liked miles from nowhere But I might die tonight is good
Not really a fan.
Father And Son, Into White kinda, Wild World kinda. I don't care for Stevens supporting fatwah against Rushdie.
Very calming sweet lil tune but not for me
Some nice tunes. But a lot of bland stuff.
Didn't like this. A couple of hits, but altogether pretty boring.
Not for me even if I did sing along to Wild World. 2.
Calming and steady, really cohesive scheme but a little too much for my taste, no song sticked out
Other than the hit, Father and Son, the album felt empty to me. Nothing to go back to. Nothing that stood out to me.
Not my vibe
fav: wild world
Not much I can say about this one. The '70s wouldn't be the same without ol' Cat. I barely even noticed it was over, not much difference between this and silence.
Had Cat Stevens on my list for a long time based on his hits but this is so incredibly tame.. Couldn’t really get into it.
Music is great, really hate the live music. Dunno how this album can be such a fail after the last one I got of his was so great
Track 1 - where do the children play? liked the idea and tune of this 1 : 7/10 PLAYLIST ADDDDD Track 2 - hard headed woman didnt rlly like this one - vocals were too loud : 4/10 Track 3 - wild world ahh yes the hit - its similar to simon + garfunkle in a way, tune and lyrics make it very catchy : 7/10 Track 4 - sad lisa purr variety, nice piano, idek I think his voice just pmo : 5/10 Track 5 - miles from nowhere average, didnt rlly stand out : 5/10 Track 6 - but i might die tonight ditto as above, i like the title tho : 4/10 Track 7 - longer boats I like the guitar lines!!!! Reminded me of Jim Crowe, I just didnt like the tune : 6/10 Track 8 - Into white Very chill and sweet : 6/10 Track 9 - on the road to find out blackbird singing in the dead of niiight!! Liked the guitar in this and the repetition but again just not rlly my speed : 5/10 Track 10 - father and son very cozy beatles vibe, reminded me of the concept of hey jude and we’re gonna be friends, rlly liked this one : 7/10 PLAYLIST ADDDDDDDD Track 11 - Tea for the Tillerman very cool title but i just didnt like the tune and the production, wasnt my tune : 4-10 Jangly guitar and cool lyrics in some, however just dont think this is my genre Playlist adds: 2/11
Never has a relatively short album felt so long.
Not my cup of tea so I didn’t listen to it entirely.
quite pleasant but not my cup of tea alr its kinda boring
Ok. ★★
Quintessential Cat/Yusuf.
A bit slow and lyrical at the beginnings but the songs typically pick up and feel powerful towards the ends and overall sound well made Just not really my taste but I appreciate it Wild world I’ve heard before 6/10
not my personal favorite album as a whole, but I have been listening "Wild World" for years now! I can appreciate the impact this album has had without necessarily loving it myself.
I really wanted to like this album and I would have said that I was a Cat Stevens fan. He was a prominent artist during the time my music tastes were being formed. However, all I could think about as every song played was Jack Black singing these songs. The whole album sounded like him and seemed like something he would do.
I understand the quality of this album but it’s definitely not my thing. Not a fan of Yusuf/Cat Stevens’ voice and I can’t get past it.
I'm just not a Cat Stevens guy.
Can see why people like it but not for me. I didn’t even make it through half. Found it a little boring
Wish I could give this a 2.5. It was good just didn’t love it.
49/1001 First listen. Can’t believe I’ve never heard the original Wild world before. I was pleasantly surprised with how different it sounded from the more popular takes on it. The rest didn’t do much for me though. 4/10
Not for me
Interesting mix of folk/pop with some standout tracks like Wild World and Father And Son. Worth a listen.
Folk music is not my cup of tea, but I'll give this album two points: It's short (only 36 minutes) and it rocks out a little bit, at least. The songs prominently involve the instruments and they aren't just there as background dressing for Stevens' hippy-dippy lyrics. Even at the short running time, it's still pretty monotonous, but better than the usual singer-songwriter fare. I'd rather they had tossed in a second Cat Stevens album than the umpteen albums of Leonard Cohen that were included.
Some classics in there but not my style. Some lyrics are icky. Ballad-wise, King Crimson did it better.
Saved this from a 1 bc it does have some musical merit, it's just not for me
Quite boring
A little too mellow for my tastes. Might be good to help someone go to sleep at night.
Old time hippie Cat Stevens…meh…I never much cared for this boring stuff.
Some classic bangers but generally speaking, not for me.
Very, very, very boring
Of its time, some excellent tracks but not as good as Tim Buckley or Niro young
Solides Album.
Boring music, so- so lyrics, beautiful voice.
Not great. Not even very good.
Litt for religiøst. Wild workshop er en hit
Alright
gentle, tender, and rather dull
You are treated to a sequence of tracks that feel less like individual compositions and more like variations on a theme. An exercise where the speed and volume are the only variables. The closest to a shift is "On the road to find out" which has a more angry energy which finally made me wake up. Mildly entertaining blandness. The components are all there, but they rarely cohere into anything that transcends the calculated comfort. Is this folk pop? Not sure it was ever going to win me over.
Just didn't like the sound of this one at all. I'm giving it a two because I imagine if you're the right kind of person, you'd love an album like this. I'm not one of those people.
Bisschen lahm, aber 2 Hits drauf
listened to this during my heavy metal phase and thought it was not very good. now nearly 40 years later ...still think the same. Two good songs
Eh, fine. Probably one of those situations where it influenced a lot of stuff that came to follow, but is kind of boring because of that.
Really cute cover that I could easily see belonging to a twee pop album, but the music itself doesn't do much for me. Folkiness is always nice, but there's bits where his voice gets more forceful and they really don't work imo.
There’s something about the sincerity and simplicity of the lyrical content that I find to be a bit juvenile. That’s not really fair, and I think it’s actually just representative of his self actualization. The instrumentation, if applied to different subject matter, would be a perfect recipe for me.
Very nice bit painfully uncool
It’s pleasant enough but doesn’t really grab or hold attention. 2/5
meh 2/5
Surprisingly boring. Even with wild world and Fight Test, sorry, I mean Father and Son, on there.
This album was such a let-down. "Wild World" is one of my favorite songs of all time, and "Father and Son" always makes me cry, so I was eager to listen to the full album for the first time. Let me tell you, there is a reason this album is not as acclaimed as other folk-rock records from the early 70s: it is not that good.
I can’t deny he’s a pretty good songwriter, but I was never much of a fan. Cat? Too cute for my tastes. And he looks a bit like Jeffrey Epstein now. Pass.
Apparently it's supposed to be a nice folk album from before the guy went insane with his Islam ramblings. However, I'm not into folk, so apart from the Wild World there's really nothing to look forward to.
I can understand why people love Cat Stevens. I'm not one of them.
Even some nice arrangements, complete with piano and string sections, can never distract from the lack of variety on this record. If you like what Cat generally does with his songwriting and vocals then that's not a huge problem. But I had trouble picking standout moments on this record. The most noteworthy tracks come at the end of the record with Father and Son and then the title song, which finishes just as it threatens to get going. Serviceable, quaint but a little tedious. The cover art was apparently painted by Cat himself; it's terrible.
Not really a huge fan of this album. I think it's more of a personal taste thing though. The specific style of rock here just doesn't do it for me.
Album Art Review - looks like a children's book cover - tracks for Yusuf/Cat Yusuf/Cat Stevens - great singer songwriter. Kind of a right of passage to get into Cat Stevens at some point early in one's musical journey. This album has a couple of classics Hard Headed Woman and Wild World. I don't think Cat knew what a wild world it really would become. Father and Son is another. I'm pretty much over Cat Stevens, been there, stuck in a time in my life that is long gone. Thanks though
ummmmm this puts me to sleep but it's not terrible! LMAO
I generally despise folk rock - plug your fucking guitar into an amp, FFS. This is worse than most, but it gets a bonus star because that one song worked really well in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
ripetitivo, ma due canzoni belle
It is alright. He has a great voice but a lot of the songs sound the same
Oddly mixed and very bland. Has some sweeter moments, but largely forgettable and uninteresting. The big hits are decent, but nothing else to see here. Top tracks: Wild World, Father And Son
Don't think I'd ever be in a mood to listen to this.
This is really not my thing
kind of monotonous but an interesting story, like how in 2020 Stevens sings along with the original 1970 22-year-old self. kinda cool but just not super interesting music.
eh
folk genre is not something i listen to. found this album to be just okay
it's alright but i'm not really fan. i think i just don't like folk music.
8 or 9 nicely written pop folk songs with a few more songs thrown in. While the songs are nice I can't help but find them a bit schmaltzy, even Father and Son. Stevens also doesn't have much, lyrically of musically, that makes him unique, and I find the louder moments with drums to mostly not work. An exception to all of that is the opener, Where Do the Children Play?, which I like quite a bit and which climaxes nicely. Otherwise it's mostly forgettable. (I also can't help but agree with folks who say that Wild World comes off as condescending, and even if that was intentional it doesn't make me like it more.)
Another album I have no expectations for. From the cover art, maybe something about childhood? Oh, it's another crusty singer-songwriter from the 70s. As I read in another review, I look forward to the older generation of editors to die so we can reappraise a lot of these albums as simply boring and not very good. Father and Son was pretty good, I can understand why people like it.
I just don’t get it… I just find this record so twee!
This was a big one in my parent's rotation. Father & son always hits. Some good tracks but lacking some kind of edge or POV for me? Pleasant, certainly and with a childlike innocence at times.
What’s the tea? This album was not for me.
Perhaps it's because I'm coming hot off of a Nu Jazz Blues binge, but I didn't hate this. I certainly wouldn't elect to listen to it again, but it was nice not feeling like the day's album was actively trying to break me on a personal level.
beyond meh
Good music, entertaining rhythms, just not for me.
Went in not expecting to like this at all. It was folksy but not overly so. 2.5⭐️ rounding down because it was still more folk than I care to listen to.
ok
There's punk and punk. No doubt this was an important band at the time. At the time I didn't get anything from this band
I respect the artist and the song writing but I just can’t dig Cat.
Two classics but the rest is inconsequential fluff.
Understand why relevant to singer / songwriter, soft rock history, it’s still eh
Dull as dishwater but hey it's got the boyzone song and the theme song from extras too
Eh.
Ok
Not a Cat Stevens fan, but i can appreciate the songwriting.
Nem túl jó apukarock
boring unless ohhh baby baby it's a wild wuuurld
Ehhh
Not really my thing, but there were a few good songs in here.
Many ppl like CS but I'm not one of them. I've heard a couple of his songs in the past and nothing about them interested me to explore him further. This style of folk- singer/songwriter does not appeal to me. I'm not into "finding myself" nor contemplating the spiritual. CS is on this journey and I cannot follow. The songs are well done and the album is (for me mercifully) an appropriate length. I give this a 2 and no songs particularly liked because this is just not for me.
Don't remember
Meh. I understand why it’s a classic but I just find it boring.
He's alright I guess. Wild World is a good song, but I'm not crazy about the rest of the album.
At no point this weekend - three days! - was I in the mood for Yusuf's limp acoustic guitar playing, his winsome warbling, and elongated vowels. Lacking the psychedelic whimsy that one gets with Donovan, Islam comes across as precious and sheltered. On Wild World, he is even condescending - she doesn't care what you think, dude, she's living her own life. There's not much to stomp or tap your foot to. Everyone on the record is sitting cross-legged, even the underutilised drummer - I don't think I heard a kick drum until the last minute of Miles from Nowhere. Maybe I missed it in the muddy low end of Wild World. I like Wild World though. I don't know why it's getting a kicking here, beyond the fussiness of the whole record. There are other good songs here, but it's not a good record. The thing that kept me coming back was trying to work out what Into White sounded like. It was My Secret Reason by Lisa Germano from Geek The Girl, although they don't actually sounds that much alike. 2 Here’s a strange album. There are a few songs I really love - Where do the children play?, Wild World and Father and Son - and I can certainly admire the rest. But I don’t think this is a good album. I hate Cat Stevens’ voice for starters. It isn’t easy for me to mark a record down for that because I’m a big Dylan fan and it turns me when people say he can’t sing; Dylan is a great singer - whether the notes are perfectly accurate or not (generally not but much more than people think) he brings a texture and character in his vocals that makes his recordings great. Leonard Cohen is an objectively bad singer -almost a non-singer - but it’s a voice that perfectly inhabits the gloomy, defeated world of many of the songs he writes and, again, makes many of his recordings. Cat Stevens doesn’t have any of this. He has a genuinely crap voice in my opinion; it’s completely uninteresting; slight, shallow with an unpleasant rasp. If God gave him accuracy it was, surely, so that he could demo these absolutely terrific songs effectively for people who were decent singers. The arrangements here are fine - although no musician distinguishes themselves even for a moment. The album cover is not fine - the font is rotten, the colouring hideous, the beige mount is awful, the perspective is wrong and the children look creepy. 2/5
The songwriting is really good, but I do not like the whole hippy-dippy vibe of all of it. I get that was the thing in the 70's, but it's horribly dated.
Not my thing, but my wife enjoyed it.
I don’t mind a good acoustic album but this one wasn’t all that good
boring simple instrumentals quickly become grating. harmonious moments don't make up for stretches void of anything of substance or interest. 4/10
А little bit borring songs.
Weet niet, maar very much not feeling it.
I didn't care for this album. Felt boring and I couldn't connect with it emotionally
This is a hippie litmus test and I still don't pass. I have childhood memories associated with the big hits, of course.
Some absolutely beautiful songs, but i've never liked his voice. If i could have this album sung by joni mitchell it'd be 5 stars! 2.5
I wasn’t the biggest fan of this one, it doesn’t suck but just not really my thing
Thought it was gonna be good and then it wasn’t. Btw this is Shea idk what happened lol
I've historically disliked Cat Stevens' music, but this didn't grate on my ears like some of his other stuff. 2.2/5
sad lisa isch mega schön, wild world gfallt mer au, isch halt es cover. de rest findi langwiilig.
Idk, I didn't really get it. Something about it was off-putting to me. The lyrics also seemed nonsensical haha. It was like weirdly preachy on how I should live my life. Like he is old so we trust his insight and knowledge but the insight and knowledge seemed tired. All the choral singing threw me off! It was weirdly positive. Maybe I am in a weird head space right now while listening to this but idk it's like a tad weirdly religious? Like life is good and light triumphs! Don't ya know, kids?! He's like weird, peppy Bob Ross. Actually, after the album ended Spotify just started playing similar music and queued up "Monday, Monday" by The Mamas & The Papas and I was like "Oh man this album is turning around!" and I went to look and it wasn't Cat Stevens. Hahahahahah.
not for me
Feels like I should like this, but to be honest I just found it super boring. Nae much going on at all.
Father and Son and Wild World are undeniable classics. Cat Stevens is a style, not my personal favorite, but not bad by any stretch
A bit too boring
Tolerable at best for me
1. The entire time the album was on I was waiting for the cats in the cradle song (what I expected Father & Son to be) and boy was I confused when it was not that and, because I was mid-flight, I couldn’t look this up. A later Google validates that I’m not the only one to make this mistake. 2. I can appreciate that this album gave us Wild World, making the really random musical ending of Skins season one possible
This is a weird one. There are some things I liked. And specific things that bug me. The biggest is whoever produced this made the layered vocals the uhh double vocals are so unbelievably distracting. Idk what it is but none of those sections with aggressive layered vocals are done in a way like how everyone else does it. It sounds just bad alot of the times. The songwriting is nice and wild world is a banger but not too into it but not 100% against it
Just never really grabbed my attention
As bland and inoffensive as it can get *yawn*
I like short albums
It's alright. Decent album, but not for me
Full Disclosure: I listened through "Wild World" and just skimmed the rest. Not my jam, but I can understand how some would enjoy this.
Not my thing.
⭐⭐ 4/10 Nice listen, but not my kind of music as it is too calm for my likings. I do understand why people would like this, as it is very peaceful music. Wild World is definitely the best song of the album. The others are really forgettable. The album does remind me of Graceland by Paul Simon.
Right from the first song I felt a bit unsure on the vocals... While he has a very strong and projective voice, I did feel there was a certain whiney-ness to it. The songwriting didn't blow me away and felt very of its time (not that that is a bad thing.) However something that did stick out were the melodies and instrumentation on a lot of songs. Those two conventions managed to make up for any times I wasn't enjoying his vocals. There were some very upbeat tracks (such as "Miles From Nowhere") and some very slow and calm songs (such as "Into White" and many others.) So overall this was not a bad album, but - and this surprises me as a big Nick Drake fan - it was just a neutral listen for me. (5/10)
Men...
Never heard of these people but ngl his voice was really good. First 2 songs started off strong but after that only really ended up liking one more song. Solid album tho
Did not enjoy this one, a bit too lyrical and whoozy for my taste.
A bunch of short songs, some with catchy hooks, mostly sounding about the same.
ok'ish
Very predictable songwriting, but at least he knows not to overstay his welcome for the most part. Still, I was wishing the album would end by the third-to-last song, so two stars.
Just wasn’t drawn to it.
Bargain basement Paul Simon. I was optimistic when I put this on because I really like “wild world”, but those hopes were quickly dashed. You need to be a really talented song writer to make the flowery acoustic guitar songs work and I don’t think “Cat” clears that bar.
2.6
not bad, not exactly my taste
Too mellow / old
Interesting album, not the biggest fan. Weird blend of 60s folk and 70s soft rock
I found myself craving the raw fury and world-weary cynicism of Simon and Garfunkel.
I wanted to like this but was left wanting more I guess.
birth of the twee
Kinda reminiscent of McFly, particularly Tom Fletcher’s solo written work. A couple songs - the ones I had hear before - stood out but the rest was kinda eh. I can see myself tolerating this if someone else put it on but it’s not something I would ever reach for myself. 2.5 I guess.
Sanoitukset taas...
I am a split personality when it comes to Cat Stevens. I love his song writing, I like how most of the songs are performed - but I hate listening to his records. All the same, becomes boring after the second song. This one is no exception. Great individual songs, but I cannot stand listening to more than two in row
Once in an interview Seal was asked, “What’s the most important part of a song?” And his answer was, “It’s the song… And the voice. but if you REALLY pushed me, it’s the song, because a good enough song will transcend the voice.” I’d agree with that. A good enough song will still be good even with a bad voice. Unfortunately, in my opinion, none of these songs were good enough to do that. Stevens’ voice was nails on a chalk board, the songs were dull and monotonous, and this was the first record where I was actively waiting for it to be over. It reminded me of Arlo Guthrie’s work. Guthrie is a folky singer who doesn’t have a tremendous voice, but he knows how to write a song that belongs around the campfire, and he’s a master at making the most of his humble instrument. I know Cat Stevens means a lot to a LOT of people, but for me, I just didn’t get it at all.
Wild World makes it for me. I was never a Cat Stevens fan, but glad he was there.
Idk not for me
A perfect soundtrack for Waldorf PTA knitting circles...
Pretty good
strophic country music mid
Ok sound.
Pleasant enough, I guess
Way worse than I thought it was going to be.
Musica tipo folk inglesa. Tmbm n me interessa muito. Apesar de ser até q legalzinho.
If you like 70’s long drawn out depressing songs you’ll like this
No, only wild world.
Pretty boring
Not terribly familiar with Cat Stevens' discography, but I do like some of his songs, including 'Wild World,' which is on this album. A lot of this album is pretty sleepy, but has moments of higher energy, like in 'Miles From Nowhere.' Not sure I'll revisit this one, but I do want to listen to more Cat Stevens now. 2/5
2/5 kinda boring
Dull.
Least shocking hot take ever said: Father and Son is still a brilliant song. The rest was fine but don’t ask me to recall anything about it. 2.5
"Tea for the Tillerman" is a folk pop album by the singer-songwriter Yusef / Cat Stevens, who is also known as Steven Demetre Georgiou, Steve Adams, Cat Stevens, Yusuf Islam, and mononymously as Yusuf. This artist received critical acclaim for his work as a musician and activism. This album gave us hits including "Wild World" and "Father and Son."
Mostly meh. A couple of ok tunes.
Weak sauce.
folky, calking peaceful voice. reminds me of being a kid and hearing this as I was trying to go to sleep. it sorta made me feel weird, and I can't shake that feeling.
2/5
Not my gig sorry cat
I wasn't very familiar going into this album. "Wild World" was the only song I knew. It's a lovely album to have on as background music but not one that I would revisit often.
not saying this album is bad, because it’s not, just saying that isn’t for me.
Big ole snoozefest
Kind of all just blends together aside from the songs you already know.
