Arrived at Cat Stevens a long time ago via Harold and Maude and always liked it a lot. There can be a certain preachiness to his lyrics and can maybe err on the side of softness and lightness but I think this album is pretty perfect.

Good stuff, will possibly listen to the odd track again, here and there.

I should like this but something about it just doesn't work. It's too nice perhaps?

I remember discovering Cat Stevens as a high schooler. Best decision I ever made. This has been, and still remains, one of my favorite albums to put on when I'm having a bad day.

The over-amped mic capturing the plectrum scraping the strings on "Wild World" is, in my opinion, the single worse recording decision in the history of popular music. Otherwise a great album

For intensely hippy stuff that was radio-played to death in its heyday, this still stands up pretty well.

I've only heard a few Cat Stevens songs before, but I didn't know they were Cat Stevens songs until listening to this record. I enjoyed moments of this album, but as a whole it's quite a snore-fest. Nothing against Cat Stevens' talent, as he's a wonderful songwriter; It's just not for me.

Good Sunday morning music

12th November 2021 Listened mainly while getting the front room ready for Jake, jess and the boys to come and stay for the weekend. Love this album, feels like maturing and developing throughout. I imagine it keeps on giving as you move through life.

Wild World is a classic for a reason. Genuinely calming album. Hard headed woman is my next favorite from this album. Quickly became a favorite and I'm glad I discovered it.

This is very decent. I know this album pretty well and it certainly passes the test of time!

The album is just catchy enough to keep you listening and just deep enough to keep you thinking. I personally think "Miles From Nowhere" is the standout track, but I complete understand why the stand-out hits ('Where Do The Children Play?', 'Hard Headed Woman;, 'Wild World' and 'Father An Son') are what they are as well. I honestly have no idea how the Flaming Lips could claim that 'Fight Test' was not directly *ehm* "influenced" *ehm* by 'Father And Son'. Uncanny similarities aside, the album was a good listen on it's own two feet.

Folky goodness - some Jethro Tull style vocal embellishments made me smile. I’m also reminded of the busker who played Wild World non stop for years outside my old office.

This was quite the nice listen! Very quirky

This is the best album of Cat Stevens. Despite the very ugly album cover it contains some pretty songs like the classics "Father and Son" and "Wild World". Also nice is "Where Do the Children Play?". The rest of the tracks are rather unremarkable.

Far be it from me to come barging back in here and start throwing my weight around but this is so good. I've always thought Cat Stevens has some good tracks but existed all on one level, a sort of airy fairy very light folk sound. I've had him all wrong, this album is really really good. When Wide World came on I was pleased to hear this was a Cat song, but Sad Lisa really got me listening. From then on there are regular gut punches and tear jerks. It's got a rich, full sound and his voice has a wonderful quality that can jump from lightness to great depth at the spin of a wheel.

Float downriver on a boat of pure songcraft, expertly steered by yer man Yusuf/Cat.

Less spaced-out than Donnovan, less insincere than James Taylor, Stevens is undeniably melodic, consistently rhythmic and surprisingly not annoying; everything I'd expected he wouldn't be. Given how insanely catchy the closer/title track is, I'm shocked it's only lasts a minute. But given his virility as a folk-pop peddler, leaving them wanting more is exactly the right thing to do.

Used to love this album after watching Harold and Maude. Doesn't really hold up years later, every song sounds too much like a Bank commercial (this ain't the fault of Yusuf, its just that his unique pop poet style has been appropriated for commercial gain)

Must have been 10 years ago since the last time I listened to this album. The music is easily 5 stars just like any other Cat Stevens album from that period, but -1 for the lyrics.

Ok - not really for me but harmless.

The last track! 😍 I want it to go on forever, but it doesn’t. The chorus! I play this track over and over. What a baller move to end this album on that unresolved chord. I associate Cat Steven’s with so many pieces of video media as well. “This is Us” uses him almost obsessively. And the title track of which I am enamored is from “Extras”. All in all, good vibes on this album and some substance

September 10, 2021 "Wild World" is obviously a classic. The rest of this album is pretty good, with one or two standouts ("Sad Lisa", "Father and Son")

This is pretty much the gold standard for singer songwriters of the 1970s, both for it's quality and for its themes of reflection and search for meaning. Beautiful, melodic songs, with balanced, elegant arrangements. There's something in Stevens' delivery that makes him seem like he was beamed in from another time, long ago - a pop star Thoreau come to tell us, "Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!" He's still on the journey himself at this point, of course. But it's delightful to ride along with him for a while. Listen in a sunny window, cup of tea at hand. Fave Songs: Wild World, Sad Lisa, Father and Son, Hard Headed Woman

Il est arrivé dans ce générateur avec un statut de favori, et force est de constater qu'il n'a pas déçu. Après une entame tonitruante, Cat Stevens ayant déjà creusé l'écart avec ses principaux concurrents (Gene Clark qui ?) au bout de quatre chansons décide de poser le jeu et faire courir ses adversaires. Une dernière action de classe en fin d'album avec Father And Son permet à Yusuf de terminer la partie sur une bonne note sans avoir été mis en difficulté une seule seconde.

Je n'ai pas grand chose à raconter sur ce projet, étant en proie à une semaine qui s'annonce très éprouvante temporellement, je vous prie de bien vouloir comprendre que je ne peux me permettre de prendre le temps d'écrire des reviews brillantes. J'ai eu Robert au téléphone, il comprend et ne m'en tient pas rigueur. Un album qui ne demande qu'à confirmer donc.

Great fan of this album- was all set to give it 4* (purely for preferring Teaser and the Firecat) but then listened again and was hit by the emotional depth, the wonderful melodies, the great simplicity of the songwriting and arrangements across the record. Bookends don't come much better than "Where do the Children Play" and "Father and Son" (plus the brilliant title track).

My favorite Cat Stevens album

Classic Cat right here. In my adolescence I used to think this guy was corny as fuck, but in my adulthood his earnest charm has been slowly eroding my defenses and, at 40, I reckon I could say I'm a fan. I'm a guitar teacher and have taught his tunes for years, but it was more from wanting to share the wider repertoire of guitar with students than from being a fan. Well... rock on... no, that's not right.. folk on, Mr. Cat!

I always mix up Cat Stevens with Ted Nugent because of Cat Scratch Fever. Color me confused. Anyway, when future generations look back at my notes, keep in mind that I'm not judging any of these musicians on their musical ability, skill, or talent. My notes are solely based on the likelihood that I would listen to the album again in the future.

Fine, pretty mellow entry. Wild World certainly stands higher than the rest. The rest is very listenable, but a bit forgettable.

Folk music framed as a children's book: whimsical, playful, and a bit intense at times. Stevens is particularly good at building songs with this intensity, giving it a sort of build and fall. To that extent, I think Stevens is an excellent songwriter. That being said, it doesn't resonate with me very much. No fault of the music, it just doesn't stick with me.

Not really my thing but I liked it. Weird inflection on words sounded like trolling and I appreciate that. I'm a big fan of mispronounced names.

Cat Stevens reflects on the world in front of him as he sees it, asking fundamental questions and offering humble advice. He tends to come at you slowly and then all at once with a jolt of emotion as if his patience has run out. It’s during these 0-60 moments with this sense that he’s betrayed or surprised himself with outburst that he carries a unique sincerity. Where do the children play. Miles from nowhere. On the road to find out.

Not gonna lie, I went into this thinking it was gonna be shit hippie music. I was wrong. It is only 10% shit hippie music. The other 90% is pretty rad and chill.

An album that was part of the soundtrack of my life growing up. In addition to Cat Steven's great voice, the songs touch on basic universal human feelings. A classic that doesn't age.

Father and son is top. The rest of the album is really good.

The easiest way for me to describe this album is simple, it’s basically the beauty of a Studio Ghibli film condensed into an album, and no I’m not just saying that cause the album art kinda reminds me of them. Anyways, it’s a lovely little folk album.

I liked this more than I thought I would. Easy listening all the way through but with enough variation between songs to keep me interested.

Splendid album! A strong start to this challenge. A relaxing and smart album. Cat Stevens is apparently a lot more than Wild World. Who knew? It's the kind of album you can listen to several times and remember each song. I hear something new each time.

I had to downvote this to three stars as I woke this morning and couldn’t remember more than a handful of tracks but it’s still lovely stuff

Jack and I lay back and thoroughly enjoyed this one. I've always loved 'Wild World' and 'Father and Son' but this whole album gives me a feeling of transcendence (it's probably because we were laying down in a very relaxed state for the entire album but still). 'Miles From Nowhere' does kick up a bit at times and 'On The Road To Find Out' is a pretty perky tune but generally, it's chilled throughout. The best part of this album, however, is the reminder of Andy Milman and Ross Kemp that we get from Tea For The Tillerman.

Heel leuk album. Je zou denken dat Sufjan Stevens en Cat Stevens familie zijn van elkaar, omdat de muziekstijl wel wat weg heeft van elkaar. Toch is er blijkbaar geen verwantschap tussen de twee.

Het eerste nummer kwam me ergens bekend voor. 'Wild world' is het meest gekende van dit album, maar niet het beste nummer. Al bij al een goed album

i ADORE "wild world", so I'm quite biased :)

The title track is an obvious tune (mainly because of Extras...) but I did enjoy the whole album. V easy to listen to.

I really like the  hits on this LP and they are not overplayed to the extent that I can't listen to them anymore. The rest of the album is also decent although not well known to me. Hard Headed Woman and Miles From Nowhere stand out favourably among the songs that weren't hits Father and Son is special imo for two reasons. First, I expect we all noticed how the voice he uses when he sings the father's dialogue is different from the voice he uses when singing the son's dialogue. There is more to this than meets the ear. If you want to change the key in which you are singing, you also have to change the key you play the guitar which means changing the chords to be consistent with the different key. Kris Kristofferson does this on The Pilgrim Chapter 33  where he sings and strums the first half of the song in the key of G but just before the second verse he switches things up and starts to strum and sing in the key of D. (This will make even the best Karaoke singers sound foolish once the second verse starts if they don't know what's about to happen.) But I digress. In Father and Son, the chords don't change from verse to verse which means the  key stays the same. Cat Stevens delivers the different voice by singing the Son's dialogue a full octave higher. Having the vocal range to sign a song in two different octaves is impressive. The second reason the song is special relates to how the meaning of the song to his audience has changed in the decades since its release. Initially his audience in the 70s must have  thought "the old man doesn't get how the world works these days" but later in life this may have changed to "the son should accept the wisdom he's being offered." Personally, I now think both father and son were right. This is one of these LPs where his actions outside of music help  justify a high rating.  As a teenager growing up in Sudbury I recall the reaction when he went from being Cat to being Yusuf. The common view was he had succumbed to a cult and / or had gone crazy. In those days the media would not help frame things differently. I think his turning to Islam caused at least  some of his fans to think more freely, become more accepting and by now hopefully hold the view that his name change from Cat to Yusuf is no more deserving of negativity than his name change from Steve to Cat was. 

This is a fine album and has the song "Wild World" but more importantly the titular track is the closing theme from Extras (brings it up at least one full star).

I have this one on vinyl, so I put it on the platter and gave it a listen. All in all, a good album. There are some really good tunes on here, “Father and Son” being one of them. I can see how/why this album made this list

Mona Bone Jakon only began Cat Stevens' comeback. Seven months later, he returned with Tea for the Tillerman, an album in the same chamber-group style, employing the same musicians and producer, but with a far more confident tone. Mona Bone Jakon had been full of references to death, but Tea for the Tillerman was not about dying; it was about living in the modern world while rejecting it in favor of spiritual fulfillment. It began with a statement of purpose, "Where Do the Children Play?," in which Stevens questioned the value of technology and progress. "Wild World" found the singer being dumped by a girl, but making the novel suggestion that she should stay with him because she was incapable of handling things without him. "Sad Lisa" might have been about the same girl after she tried and failed to make her way; now, she seemed depressed to the point of psychosis. The rest of the album veered between two themes: the conflict between the young and the old, and religion as an answer to life's questions. Tea for the Tillerman was the story of a young man's search for spiritual meaning in a soulless class society he found abhorrent. He hadn't yet reached his destination, but he was confident he was going in the right direction, traveling at his own, unhurried pace. The album's rejection of contemporary life and its yearning for something more struck a chord with listeners in an era in which traditional verities had been shaken. It didn't hurt, of course, that Stevens had lost none of his ability to craft a catchy pop melody; the album may have been full of angst, but it wasn't hard to sing along to. As a result, Tea for the Tillerman became a big seller and, for the second time in four years, its creator became a pop star.

A perfect little package of 3-minute acoustic guitar pop gems. Great song writing, beautifully recorded, sequenced and presented. Has Father and Son on it - objectively an all-time great song.

So, if I was to compare this to our other 1970 folkie of the week, Paul Simon, I would say these songs seem much more genuine and when Cat tries to change pace or bend the genre a bit he’s totally within himself. So, I guess this is what all the girls listed to when their boyfriends played Led Zeppelin.

Quel album! Je trouve du réconfort dans la voix de Cat Stevens malgré qu'elle soit atypique. Outre le classique Wild World, j'aurai toujours un faible pour la pièce Father and son. Je trouve ça simple et efficace, pas trop de flafla mais pas monotone pour autant.

Ni sé bien qué género sea esto, wiki dice que folk rock, pero suena bien. Me gustó en general y especialmente "Wild World", que al parecer es su canción más popular. Conocía a Cat Stevens sólo de nombre, tons estuvo bien oír este disco suyo. Las otras dos canciones que disfruté mucho son "Miles From Nowhere" y "But I Might Die Tonight". Su voz me agradó, tiene como una energía peculiar y la instrumentación, todo combinó bonito. 8/10.

Instant 5 stars for me. This is one of my all time favorites, and one I revisit frequently. Another one I have a hard time even putting into words. What can be said about Father and Son? or But I Might Die Tonight? Spent the day listening to various mixes of this album. Tea for the Tillerman 2 is wild. Love the addition of strings.

In my opinion, Tea for the Tillerman (and his followup Teaser and the Firecat) are the two best folk albums of the 1970’s. Just great from start to finish. “Wild World” is an obvious standout and gives the album it’s needed pop hit, but “Father and Son” is one of the best songs - in any genre - ever written.

2.5 | Nunca me ha llamado mucho Cat Stevens o Yusuf o como quiera que sea correcto llamarle. Se me hizo un disco difícil para calificar. Inició y se me hizo lenta la canción, la letra bien escrita pero algo cursi... de repente cuando falta poco menos de un minuto para que acabe la canción la levanta le mete ganas y termina muy bien. Empieza a sonar prometedor el disco. La segunda canción... se repite, rock folk tranquilo, que se va sintiendo medio lentón con un cello, falta un minuto... levanta la canción acaba chingón. Esto de levantar la canción no vuelve a ocurrir, me voy quedando solo con canciones bien escritas, agradables, con instrumentación si no novedosa ni super brillante, sí al menos variada. Sin embargo esas letras aunque bien escritas se siguen sintiendo más cursis que Simon, Garfunkel, Dylan o cualquiera de los otros folksosos que nos han tocado. Se sienten... "Preachy," medio obvias y en un disco de este tipo justo las letras son parte fundamental creo. Me agradó el disco, quizá demasiado tranquilo a ratos y aunque no tenga planes de meterlo a rotación hay calidad (tanto musical como lírica a pesar de lo cursi), quizá solo no es mi estilo.

I've never really listened much to Cat Stevens in the past, and this album was a pleasant break from some of the stuff I've gotten on this list lately. the lyrics are amazing, accompanied with music that hits you like a truck. I will admit, after listening to this, I am open to listening to more of Cat Steven/Yusuf Islam's work in the future.

Supuse un buen disco y ya. No me considero fan de Cat Stevens, ni siquiera sabía que se llama Yusuf. No se quedó en un buen disco y ya, la verdad lo disfruté mucho y después de 3 o 4 vueltas lo podía seguir escuchando sin problemas otras 3 más. Miles From Nowhere fue mi favorita, además de las obligadas Wild World y Father And Son. Hard Headed Woman también es buena y en general el disco es una chulada.

Hay un remaster del 2020 porque cumplió 50 años. A veces tengo que repetir la resta para corroborar que 1970 está a 50 años de distancia. La verdad es que hay muchas canciones de Cat Stevens que me gustan y un par de ellas están en este disco, así que de entrada me gustó escucharlo completo (no lo había hecho antes). Creo que como disco del género singer-songwriter es muy bueno: canciones pegajosas, bonitas letras, arreglos interesantes a voces (como en Longer Boats) y harta guitarra. Por otro lado, fuera del género, podría sentirse aburrido y demasiado meloso.

Really like the art. Love Cat Stevens singing, the guitar is very comforting. I like the almost fantasy-like feeling mixed with almost country vibes. Where do the children play is quite a banger.

Cat Stevens' voice reminds me a lot of Eddie Vedder's. It's a measured tone to the songs, but holds a lot of meaning and emotion in the words

Probably his most popular album...but I don‘t like it too much. Highly controversial person...somehow I feel a lot of ambivalence when listening to this.

I've never really been a Cat Stevens fan, TBH. He's a little too chill for my taste. That said, the songwriting is pretty damn solid. This album was apparently his big "here I am world" moment and it shows with songs like "Wild World" that have stood the test of time and been covered a thousand times. Mostly, this album is kind of ho-hum for me. It's not offensive or exciting. It just... is.

On Tea for the Tillerman, Cat Stevens had approached the road where he found out and ultimately came to terms with things regarding himself. With a wisdom beyond his young years, Cat guides the listener through the complexities of life and how to navigate it through warts and all.

This was lame but also cool? Just little ditties on the acoustic and clean singing. Really wussy and a bit sickly sweet, but can't give it less than 3/5.

A masterpiece by a musical genius. Cat Stevens is a master storyteller. Wish we could have more music by him, but his personal and religious choices are his own. Songs of my youth all abound here (it's before my time, but Cat Stevens was a mainstay in my house growing up). Wild World and Father and Son are some of the best songs ever to grace my ears and I get tears listening to them to this day. Some weaker songs make this a 4.5/5, but I just can't give this album, that meant so much to me growing up, anything other than a 5/5.
