Reviews (page 4 of 8)

I haven't listened to this in a long time and it still sounds really cool and forward-thinking for a 60s album. It's melodically rich, full of nice string and electric guitar, and it's a great vibe. That said, not a fan of how much it meanders with how short the songs can be and it's the reason this isn't a classic for me. It's just a really solid release from Love.

More mellow than 'Da Capo' with thoughtful acoustic instrumentation and a healthy dose of brass and piano. The delivery has been subdued and the lyrics are more dark. This album expresses skepticism of the counterculture scene, realizing that unbridled positivity won't fix real problems. The music is more expansive, building on that introspection.

have never heard of this group before. I felt like the album started off strong and ended a little weaker. overall I like but sounds familiar (re: like other things) but nothing exceptional.

I feel like my rating is being swayed by what I read of this album and its eventual critical acclaim for its importance in moving forward 60's hippie rock. This album is for sure a 3 - Alone Again Or is a classic with underrated musical complexity, A House is Not a Motel has great guitarwork (soft opener and hard closer). Probably because of those two I paid attention to the rest of the album for its musical chops. These guys can definitely play and arrange cool extras like horns & strings. I took note of The Daily Planet (lively), The Red Telephone (Jefferson-esque psychedelic weird), Maybe the People... (lots of instruments), Live and Let Live (again, something just lively and good guitarwork), The Good Humor Man... (they do a lot with the sound), Bummer in the Summer (neat tempo and you can hear the guitar playing dexterity) and You Set the Scene (great closer and again so much going on with the sound). Beyond all that the whole album is full of wickedly dark and clever lyrics - I think more than anything those glum undertones separate this album from its contemporaries. In the end, it's a pretty cool album but you'd miss a lot of it if you only listened to it a couple times.

The red telephone é interessante.

I have this album in my collection! Not one I listen to often, but I do enjoy it quite a bit. Solid 4-star album.

Really good. Love the variety of instruments and styles. Really fun little folk melody in Andmoreagain.

A fantastic album with intriguing lyrics and musical arrangements that have elements from multiple genres. The songs are never straightforward and go off in unexpected directions which add to a sense of unease and darkness that runs through the album.

Dig it. Added to 1

Ok lang

One of the more noteworthy albums from the psychadelic rise of the 60s, there's plenty here to be invested in. A sprawling production featuring horns and strings with just enough psychadelic trip outs sprinkled in. If you love stuff like the Beatles and the Zombies, then definitely don't skip this one. Favorites: "Alone Again Or" "A House Is Not a Motel", "The Red Telephone"

I think I need to give more time but very good

Yeah, it's alright, I won't forget

Super fun early psychedelic album. I am surprised I haven't stumbled upon this band before. I hear lots of different psychedelic artists within this album, Donovan and the Moody Blues are among the first to come to mind. The Red Telephone really reminded me of MGMT, possibly an influence for them? Really well produced, loving the use of strings in combination with the guitars underneath the vocals to give it that real dreamy feel. Accented horns in other tracks managed to fit in perfectly. Great album. Fave tracks: Andmoreagain, The Red Telephone, Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale

It is undoubtedly an original record, with orchestrations here and there worthy of classical music elegantly complementing the rock instrumentation. (7/10) FT: Alone Again Or

Genial. Muy fresco para ser de los 60

Have it, so am biased

Ah love Love but this album was tough Love.

I liked it when I listened to it but don’t remember

Presqu'un 5/5 Prefs: Alone Again Or, A House is not a Motel, Andmoreagain, The Daily Planet, Maybe the People Would be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale, Live and Let Live, Bummer in the Summer, You Set the Scene Moins pref: The Red Telephone

A strong 4

E ovo je baš lijep album. Meni dovoljno. Odlična psiholedija sa velikim dodatkom folka i bome dobro ide ruka pod ruku. Album za sunčana jutra. Alone Again Or i Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale (postigli su taj indie rock zvuk i to u 60-ima) su vrh.

love this album. 1960s psychedelic flower power. easy to listen to.

An inspiration for a lot of modern psych rock/pop artist. Classic album of his genre !

Forever Changes shows brilliant and well-crafted arrangements on well-felt compositions. Also, this is an iconic album cover for an iconic album.

60’s psychedelia

I'd never heard of Love until I started using Spotify. They frequently add Alone Again Or to a variety of playlists because it's such a genre hopper, with those excellent harmonies. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint, with that lovely contrast of sweet backing against some dark lyrics.

happilly impressed

Catchy folky rock

Un album che riascoleterei volentieri

like its alright kinda goes up and down i like it when its more rambling/psychedelic, the violin kinda fucks it up for me tho

Some of these tracks slap but some seriously fucking suck The ones that I like I LOVE especially the Spanish influence

A little too mellow for my taste, but the album flowed very smoothly. Relaxing music, hadn't heard of this band before. Favorite track: Alone Again Or

i really enjoyed this album. lots of solid tracks, especially the first song is a 5/5 !

not just your average 60s folk rock, this album plunges you right into the heart of a hippie party but theres something particularly unique and timeless about the songwriting. the melodies always manage to go in unexpected directions. this is another album i grew up listening to and it'll always be special to me. fav tracks are the red telephone and maybe the people would be the times...

Sehr angenehm woodstock

every once in a while the lyrics resonated with something in me. it didnt happen consistently, but when it did, it gave me this special feeling music can give you where you feel understood and included by something bigger than your own silly little everyday life.

This got better and better as I got a handle on the style of this record. Sounds extremely well-rehearsed, creatively composed and recorded. Mostly conventionally “pretty,” but there are more weird and brave steps everywhere that pretty much land well. This one will need to get repeats when I come back around to the greatest hits of this list.

the dark side of the hippy dream

This was neat, never heard this before. Good stuff. Great songs. Especially liked "A House is Not a Motel".

i like it!

I didn't realise how many of the songs on this album had come up in Spotify playlists for me, but really enjoyed this one

Been listening to this for years, but good to have a reminder. Really like it.

Very good psychedelia. 7/10

very light. easy. some familiar hits. very pleasant listen.

Pretty good. Not particularly memorable individual songs, but good overall

Good album but nothing to highlight about it

I want to see the Tarantino movie that'd have this as it's soundtrack

pretty, pretty good

Somehow this group and this album had never made it onto my radar before. It seems like it's held up as a masterwork of 1960s psychedelic rock - and that feels a fair assessment. Some of the tracks feel firmly rooted in the 1960s but other tunes have a longer shadow and it's clear just how deeply they influenced rock, pop and indie artists in years to come. The only thing I'd be critical of is that some of the lyrical rhymes are really lazy but at the same time, it feels like they might have been the first ones doing this particular style so maybe they get that.

Good, not great. Would listen again.

You know, I like this. It has a different feel to most '60s music. It's a little darker and more cynical. I like it.

Really liked this one, not heard of Love but every time I find a new album from this era usually end up liking it. Recognised a few of the tracks as well

Surprised by this album and its influence. Definitely a re-listen

easy listening

We liked it, would listen again- nice chilled vibes but uplifting

all you need is Love- sorry wrong song

MotA: The Red Telephone "Yeah, said it's all right, I won't forget / All the times I've waited patiently for you"

Good vibes to start the week off right

what an album, turned me on to rap after lupe

Psychedelic Rock! Interesting for sure

Really fun to listen to. Waayyy before my time, yet I found myself wanting to make a snowboard or mountain bike film set to it.

Enjoyed this one! Alone Again Or was my favourite track.

Holy shit, this was great

Loved the album!

pretty cool

It was alright. Greatest album of all time? I dunno. Good all around. A house is not a motel is a great song

4/5 insteresting album, I'd buy it!

Nice album to listen to

Liking the mostly Latin flavor to this. This sounds a lot more modern than 1967 and reminds me of lots of artists who came after this so was clearly an influential record. My only gripe is when it wanders off in a psychedelic direction which i think makes it lose some of its energy and drive which is there for most of the album in spades. A surprisingly great rock record that I have only just heard for the first time. 4/5

I remember seeing this album cover in all the record shops in Sudbury but didn't listen to until CKCU a couple decades later. I remember really loving "Maybe the People". In the age of synths and samples it's hard to imagine that these youngsters wrote their own horn and string arrangements! Their sound is from a long-gone era.

Alone Again Or.

A very interesting album that sounds like the 60s but offers some very unique sounds, lyrics and songwriting. A good album overall.

Suena bien!

Musically this reminded me a lot of The Doors. Except for the singer, who wasn't great. The music is good though for the most part.

funky! enjoyed

YES! YES! YES!!

Typischer 60er-70er-Sound. Coole Harmonien.

Hippy disillusion in a folky stew.

Lovely, and in the style of good '60s music the lyrics are painful (in a good way)

I did like it. Will listen again.

Again, how have I not heard of this band (but everyone knows their songs)? Catchy sing-alongs!

Skön Psych-pop från 60 talet.

Neat! Kind of Beatles-esque, but very well-produced and well-written for its time. Added some songs to my playlists.

Honestly? Thought this was going to be around a one. But it seemed very honest and real, and I really ended up enjoying it! Symphonic at times, like the very last track? Reminded me of The Beatles in a lot of ways!

Occasionally dips into generic folk pop, but overall very enjoyable. Love the dark edge a couple of the songs have, it's something that sets this apart from, for example, The Byrds.

Very solid. Maybe the people would be the times is easily my favorite on the album. Gives me feels of early ska roots mixed with Spanish influenced jazz

Enjoyed this one. Psychedelic rock is not usually my jam but I did enjoy this. Definitely interesting to read about and may listen to again

Good album, enjoyable and joyous sound, no huge hit but fits well together

The very best of 60's psychedelic folk rock

Ordentligt sväng i Live And Let Live!

Classic Rock, little bit of Beatles style harmonizing and junk like that, fairly vanilla sounding rock for the 60s. Not bad, not amazing either.

I don’t know what people thought of Forever Changes by Love back in 1967, but it did absolutely nothing for me. Maybe I’m just hitting my limit with the sheer number of ‘60s albums on the 1001 Albums list, because they all seem to blur together after a while. It’s possible this record hits differently if you actually lived through that era, but I didn’t.

I was fully expecting another drab 60s psychedelia album, but got a rich tapestry with substantial string arrangements and a mellow vibe that kept me listening. Some of the lyrical content and delivery was the low point, but it was otherwise a surprisingly agreeable ride. If this was a pure instrumental album though, it would have been infinitely more enjoyable.

This album suffers from sounding dated all these years later, when at it's time it was so different

Rock, 1967 -> 3

gwn oké

I honestly thoroughly enjoyed this album. It's definitely a little dated, but it's still so well executed that that criticism can be easily overlooked. Not all the songs land, but a lot of them do. I especially enjoyed the opening 3 songs, "Maybe the People....", and "Bummer In The Summer"

i enjoyed the vibe of this album

Enjoyed the psych 60s sound. Probably not something I’ll come back to be it was good background music for my reading time today.

okö das schiint sochli es album z sii wo mega legendär isch aber damals nöd so beachtig gfunde het. bis etz gsehni nöd meeega fest wases isch aber han nöd soo spass. the daily planet isch cool. old man mega cooli chords. ich find er singt nöd so super. nöd so fest e performance. okay the red telephonr isch viel meh e story sehr cool.

Alone again or - 4 A house is not a motel - 3 Andmoreagain - 2 The daily planet - 3 Old man - 3 The red telephone - 3 Maybe the people would be the times or between clark and hilldale - 3 Live and let live - 3 The good humor man he sees everything like this - 3 Bummer in the summer - 3 You set the scene - 3

I tried to get into this album many times after hearing the praise heaped on it, but I don't fully get it. It starts off good with "Alone Again Or" and "A House is Not a Motel", but much of the album is this baroque pop sound I don't really want from them. I miss the fuzzed out garage rock of "Seven & Seven Is". 3.5 stars.

Not quite ‘Love Forever Changes’. More ‘Like Forever Changes. There are some lush elements here although the mariachi ones aren’t to my taste and the singing is a bit weak throughout. Poetry also hit and miss. (“Oh, the snot has caked against my pants). I’d probably rather opt for their debut which at least has My Little Red Book which is a bigger bop than anything on here and whose riff went on to inspire Pink Floyd’s massive trippy crucial 60s counter-cultural touchstone Interstellar Overdrive.

I don't know if "Forever Changes" is the first psychedelic album. What I do know for a fact is that it's good. "Forever Changes" has aged fairly well. There isn't a single rubbish song on "Forever Changes". However, that doesn't mean it's a classic. 3 stars for "Forever Changes".

I had heard the name Arthur Lee but was not familiar with his music or that of Love. This sounds kind of generic '60s-rock-ish to me and none of the songs really grabbed me. Didn't hate it but didn't love it and barely liked it. "Bummer in the Summer" was my favorite song and almost sounded like proto-hip-hop. On most other days I would have given this a 2, but having just given a 2 to an electronica (!) album yesterday I feel like I have to give this a 3. But it is a very WEAK 3.

Solid and interesting enough, but some of the lyrics were really stupid.

Album #2 from Love for me. Apparently I had De Capo as one of my first albums from the list. All I remember is Seven and Seven is but rated it the album a 3 at the time. This kind of softer 60s psychedelic rock is not really my thing although there are some good parts on this record. Some interesting guitar parts here and there. And super solid drumming. But I'm not really sure why this was an album we all need to hear. I mean it's a great example of the genre I suppose. Pretty typical for the era and the style which I guess is something. But I don't think I'd ever play this again. 2.75/5

Groovy. Even if you’ve never heard this recording when some says “hippie music” this album is what you’re thinking of. I will give them a lot of credit for audacity and bravado. Just to open the album with the sprawling unique Alone Again Or took huge brass balls. The rest of the album doesn’t necessarily pay off on the promise of that song, but most of the songs are vaguely interesting if at times a bit silly.

Now I know where that song from Bottle Rocket comes from! The songs on this album vary in quality, overall not a very solid album.

Definitely made in the late 60s

Alone again or, a house, maybe the people

I generally don't like the music of the hippie era and all the age of aquarius nonsense. So when I realized that's what this album was, I settled in for a slog of a listen.. But I am happy to say this album wasn't terrible It isn't going into regular rotation for me, but it's lacks some of the self righteousness and melodrama of other hippie music.

I knew the first track, the rest were kinda just there.

Some very good writing on this album with tasty orchestral accompaniment. But, it’s a fairly inconsistent effort. Some tunes just fall flat. I think the turmoil within the band kept them from being huge. Nevertheless, a significant album and one I love to listen to occasionally, if only to wonder what could have been.

Ok I can see what they’re capable of… still not a super strong showing.

Day880 - i was expecting some sixties music that sounds like ten other sixties albums and boom that’s what i got

I listened to this one twice and didn't come away with much at all. The folk-y aspect definitely places it on the outside of my usual bubble, and some of the singing got pitchy at times. Some cool chord progressions every now and then made sure it was at least not a cookie cutter album, as did the occasional inclusion of strings and brass.

This is the first album where I worry I just didn't get enough time with it. On first listen, I thought "this is alright but I don't get the praise." But as I stuck with it, I did start to get the softer and more disquieted approach to psychedelia even if it didn't change my overall rating much. I think it's totally possible that in a few more months, I'll look back on this 3 star rating and be horrified at how low I've rated a masterpiece. But it just hasn't fully clicked yet.

Ok. Pretty average.

cute and calming

I can't help but be a little disappointed by this. Too Beatles-esque and just overall sort of boring though there were some really nice melodies and it wasn't bad

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

I have such a powerful sense of dread when I open this website and see some psychedelic shit from the late 60s. Hard to overcome it. You know what though? This was entirely not bad. It was even a little bit good

There are albums that many consider great, but you just don't understand them. This Love record is one of those for me. As often happens, it was a sales flop at the time and even led to the band's disbandment, but decades later, music lovers have remembered it and elevated it to cult status. I heard a late-'60s hippie sound here — yes, interesting orchestral arrangements, sometimes an unusual mix of Western folk rock and Eastern influences, a hint of flamenco, but seems like many people were making similar music better at the time. Although, off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone whose acoustics sounded so psychedelic. Good, but not brilliant.

This album starts of with a classic. Alone Again Or has always been a great song. However nothing else on the album comes close to matching. Most of the rest is pretty uninspiring with some of the worst lyrics ever put on record.

there's not a lot to love here and way better 60's albums to have on this list...

fairly forgettable but fun Best Song: Alone Again Or Rating: 5.5/10 Stars: 3

Just the kind of jangly late sixties stuff I usually love, but it didn’t really hit for me.

This was completely new to me. When I read that some called this the American response to the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, it spiked my interest. I ended up listening three times through, and though I was able to find more appreciation with each listen, I think that comparison is a gross overstatement. The songs are strong with a high level of musicianship -- featuring some great guitar playing and vocal harmonies... but I wouldn't be able to name a specific song that stuck out to me. And this is a great example of how the 5 star rating system here is really inadequate. I liked this album more than some of the albums I rated 3 stars, but nowhere near as much as REM Green which I gave 4 (which would be a high 4 at that). And so we find this relegated to the ocean of threes.

Expectation: -> No clue. Only a pre-internet band would name themselves Love. After listening: -> Listened to the 2015 remaster on Spotify. I am definitely a fan of baroque rock/pop. Some of this was very good. Perhaps this band/album influenced more modern artists who put out more memorable tunes. Why is andmoreagain one word? Why on The Red Telephone do they find the name Phil problematic? Questions that will probably remain unanswered. This is very close to a 4 for me. Track ranking: Alone Red Old House Amdmoreagain Live Humor Maybe Scene Bummer Planet

It’s alright, nothing really stood out to me

This has a couple of bright spots that make it feel more than just another average 60s album but not enough to make it. Good.

This album has a really strong start, the string and horns elevate a lot of the songs, and makes you forget that the singer isn't that good. As the album goes on, the song writing gets worse and exponentially more lame. Mid 3.

3.0 - Ok

The music was decent overall, the lyrics were terrible. I especially loved the visual of his snot caking on his pants. This album was very reminiscent of The Byrds. Some highlights but overall not great. 2.5 rounded up to 3.

I truly feel like I’m missing something when i listen to this album. I get the feeling that the band is trying to tell a story with these songs that I’m not seeing or comprehending. It almost feels like the soundtrack to a movie like Puff The Magic Dragon that is providing musical commentary as the illustrations walk through the storyboard. Maybe I’m crazy but every song is playful in nature, has tempo changes within that would match character conflict, and has interludes where the lyricist stops while the music continues in an upbeat, yet staccato nature. I can’t tell you exactly why I liked this, but I did.

Sure, it’s fine. 60s psychedelic with a folksy feel. I enjoyed it but I won’t be back for seconds.

This was really good. 60s folk with a hippie psychedelic vibe. Some really good grooves here. The lyrics fail them a bit, ,but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt by writing it off to 60s hippie vernacular I'm not quite hip to.

This was a lot better than a lot of the sixties albums on this. I will give a 3

I like this style of music fine, but this album didn’t stand out to me.

Soft sound, very hippy 60s sound. Sounds like smelling flowers in a field.

It lacked variety for me

Psychedelic acoustic is a new genre for me, but I dig it. A little mellow counterculture. I haven't listened to much of Love, but I enjoyed this album and would check out more. A unique sound for sure.

Love's earlier "Little Red Book" is to me one of the best songs of the mid-60s, with its insistent beat and emotional vocals. So I was looking forward to more like that on here, but this one didn't quite hit like that. The first track with its mariachi-like trumpet got my attention, the vocals throughout are good, the rhythm section is compelling, and the occasional guitar solo works. My toes are tapping. So most of it was pretty enjoyable, but it was mostly much lighter, kinda Donovanesque, than what I'd hoped for. I'd say that "Bummer in the Summer" is the standout track on this one for me. 3 stars

I listened to the album twice, but I found it underwhelming. Some melodies where good, but overall, the songs seemed repetitious.

Blind album and artist. I thought it was interesting with the instrumental variety but nothing stood out aside from that and it couldnt carry the album. Some tracks were cool and some lagged.

This was better than I thought but still pretty typical 60s 70s chill rock

This was NOT a Bummer In the Summer.

Pretty solid! The composition was a little flat leaving the album feeling somewhat boring overall 3.5/5

Inoffensive album that I doubt anyone would care about today and that probably shouldn't be on the list. It was fine. 2.5 Stars Post Review Reading Update: Way too many 5s on the main page for a sane culture.

Very much a mixed bag album, some great songs with nice instrumentations but just as many songs that I’m just bored. My fav part tho is that my fav band Magdalena Bay interpolated The Red Telephone, cool touch.

Compared to a lot of the Psychedelic Rock on this list, this is actually an enjoyable listen. Is every song great? No. But there is enough in this to keep me interested, which says a lot.

fora mišung psihodelije, hipijevštine i neke čak šansolikosti? nije nešto što bih si inače pustio, al mi je drago da sam odslušo

Its like the band kids and the theater kids in the late 60s decided to make an album. I wonder if Bummer in the Summer was inspiration for Celentrano's Prisencolinensinainciusol

I'm fond of the folk rock sound of this era and this is a good example. I only knew the opening track, the rest of the album may have been the same quality but familiarity with Alone Again Or informed how I listened to it. Deserves its place on the list.

I thought many of the tracks here were ambitious both musically and lyrically. I’d be lying if I said I was consistently engaged though.

Pretty standard psychedelic rock, nothing too unique or outstanding tbh.

Silly, odd, a bit Alice in wonderland, but not very enjoyable. First song good

Reeeeeeally lost me eventually. It's not super surprising to me that they didn't last, and their numbers are still so low. This was nice and interesting until it just got weird. "I feel funny when my name is...Phil." What the fuck? Still some nice folk pop goin on here though. Fave tracks: - Alone Again, Or - A House Is Not a Motel - The Daily Planet - Maybe the People...etc - Live and Let Live - Bummer in the Summer

Pretty distinct for the psychedelic era

Groovy

This was interesting since I had never heard it before, but was just kind of a typical psych rock album.

A HOUSE IS NOT A MOTEL!".

did not listen entirely but not my favorite, although I can imagine they were important in their days!

fine, cute, twee, creepy, some really nice bits, some average bits, some bits where the singing is....quite bad...., some nice strings and stuff, the first song is great. that's it really.

Did not really fw this… almost interesting

Late 60s rock. Psych olk rock. Quiite nice but also very MOR for the genre.

alright, nice

It was pleasant vibes

This has wisps of Moody Blues, but it just doesn’t hit the same.

The best way I can describe this album is “pleasant”. It’s quite safe when it comes to sound and it’s easy on the ears. I do like the texture. Although it didn’t exactly stand out for me, I did like the song Red Telephone. I was going to give it 2 stars but I have a flight today that is going to change my entire life forever and I have this impending sense of love leading up to this change. As if this will be a life chapter of love. I might be wrong but regardless, the title of the album and the artist name seems quite symbolic to me at the moment. Because of that I’m giving it 3 stars. Oh and also I like that the album is calming since I’m quite anxious about flying by myself for the first time.

Great album. Songs I like: Alone again or, House is not for a motel,

This was another new to me band and album. The music seems to be a mix of folk and psychedelic rock, with even a little mariachi thrown into a couple of the songs. When reading about it, I was surprised to find out that it's considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of not only the 1960s, but of all time. I wasn't surprised because it was bad. I was surprised because I had never heard of it or any of the songs on it. But, it's really not anything my parents would have listened to and it came out before I was born, so I guess I was never exposed to it. Personally, it's not my type of music. I thought the album was very polished and well put together, but it was actually a bit boring to me personally.

Good but kind of generic

Spread the Love! Forever Changes is a melodic power pop album that has a decent threefer (Alone Again, A House Is Not a Motel, Bummer in the Summer) and all songs are listenable. Some run a little long, some get a little goofy. (3.3*s) That’s with a +.1 for being on the scene in the sixties as an American band.

I have heard waaaaaaaaay better

Nice, fun listen, nothing crazy special though.

This is nice as is the orchestral work. There is absolutely nothing remarkable about this. Solid 2.75 stars.

Album 1060 of 1089 Forever Changes - Love (1967) Rating : 3.5 / 5 This is one of those albums that feels like it could only have come from one specific moment in time. It perfectly captures the spirit of the (then upcoming) Summer of Love - that blend of optimism, reflection, experimentation, and just a touch of uneasiness underneath it all. The sound is unmistakably late ’60s California. Acoustic guitars, subtle orchestration, layered arrangements all wrapped around songs that feel thoughtful and slightly introspective rather than loud and flashy. It isn’t psychedelic in the swirling, acid-soaked sense. It’s more measured than that. More deliberate. Almost careful. What stands out most to me is how cohesive it feels. The mood holds steady from beginning to end. You can almost picture the era while listening - the cultural shift, the sense that something new was unfolding. Whether it fulfilled all of its promises is another discussion, but this album sounds like the moment just before everything tipped forward. It may not hit like a hard rock classic, but as a snapshot of its time, it’s about as accurate as you’re going to get. A thoughtful, well-crafted listen that represents its era extremely well.

Every song is mid Album: 4/5

Way too folksy for me. Acoustic guitar riffs from the get go on every track meant that this one was skipped through very briefly. Musically, I'm sure it was wonderful but it was simply not to my taste.

I'd not heard of this band or album. On first play-through, I couldn't get it: instruments playing busily (but to what purposes?), lyrics delivered strangely, did nothing for me. I went to Wikipedia, and what I read about Arthur Lee put me off, eg "Lee envisioned Forever Changes as a lament to his memory". Somehow got through the album. I came back the next day, in a more positive state of mind, to give it a second listen. I'm now more open to the feel of some of the songs. I still question whether the lyrics are relatively coherent (for a given song), like a reasonably well-constructed poem, or are they in some cases just assemblages of potentially catchy but only weakly-related phrases. (This phenomenon is of course by no means not unique to Love :-) I have noted that Genius annotations don't shed much light on these songs. Overall, I'll now say this album is on the low side of Okay, 4/10.

Never heard of these guys, but it is perfect late sixties emerging rock’n’roll. Very good

- reminds me of the beatles. very nice and simple and comforting. dreamy and cool. nice to play in the background as lounge music that if u listen carefully enough u’ll actually find it sounds good.

I enjoyed the opening track, but the rest left me frustrated. It feels like a medley of rambling lyrics, folky acoustics you could imagine being played by tie-dye-clad hippies in the ’60s, and the occasional orchestral flourish. There are moments that caught my ear—the Spanish guitars on Maybe the People, for example—but overall it’s a stressful listen on first listen. Edit: on second listen these tracks are really coming into their own, the rhythm shift in Daily Planet, the foreboding A House in Not a Motel with the awesome guitar work. It loses some momentum with tracks 5/6, before Maybe The People brings you back in with a winning combo of bombastic acoustic rhythms and horns. The closing tracks are a bit too zany. Definitely one that needs time to enjoy, too much for your brain to handle in one sitting.

from the 60s mind you

Feels pretty middle of the road 60s.

Late 60s psychedelic easy listening pop. Glad I listened, wouldn’t listen again.

buen album, live and let live, temon

It’s a high 2, rounded to a 3. I like the folky psychedelic vibe. Nice.

*1967 *Very 60s hippie, groovy, California. *It also has Baroque elements, like it would be appropriate for a Renaissance faire or a King's Quest old school computer game. *No stand out songs, but all of the album is pretty solid. *Would definitely revisit this. RATING - 7/10

Enjoyable psychedelic flower fluff

Album was okay. Nothing really grabbed my attention, but it wasn't necessarily bad. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

Listened extra times really hoping to push to a 4... Just couldn't do it. Still some good stuff.

was okay. some good songs

Fun, interesting

Great music but as a record it wasn't that special.

It was not bad but kinda forgettable

I liked this. Nice arrangements and orchestration. Avoids being twee like a lot of psychedelia, or macho and pretentious like the Doors. None of the songs grabbed me especially though.

This was pretty good. Definitely had that psychedelic sound to it mixed with some acoustic folk. Worth a listen!

a house is not a motel is good

Before: I've skimmed through this album at least once before. Two of the tracks are on my favorites from 1967 list, "Alone Again Or" and "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale". During: It's very pleasant music for the most part but the songs are not real interesting. Perfectly fine as background music, as long as you don't listen to the lyrics too much, some of them are really goofy, and not in a good way. The Red Telephone is awful. After: Overall, the music is very nice but the lyrics are distracting, as they are so literal and not very interesting. I prefer that if lyrics are easy to hear, they need to at least be interesting, clever, humorous, etc. Else, the lyrics need to be kind of fuzzy or hard to make out in which case the listener can kind of make up their own lyrics. But that's just me. I'll give it 3 stars.

Straightforward psychedelic rock with some pretty weak lyrics. I love this era but this isn’t the best example of it

This is more folk than psychedelic I think. It's ok. It's not bad, but nothing stood out either.

Not excellent, middle of the road, psychedelic folk music. Bummer in the Summer is the best, most of the album is just meh.

I just wanted to use the word sobriquet as I read it on another review here and learned something new. Also this was a nice album with lovely arrangements.

60’s Rock ⭐️A House Is Not a Motel

Great album! Loved the vibe of this one!

I felt like the strings were a little overdone, otherwise this good album could've been great. Favorite track: A House is Not a Motel

¯\_( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)_/¯

Dai cool

Parts chill and enjoyable, others boring. Would try more if ever in the mood for slow, slightly psychedelic... but that's rarely my top choice

Kinda liked it. Some of the songs were boppy, I could get into them, some were slow and boring. It’s a background music that I enjoyed. Chill and vibe-y

Fingerpicked acoustic guitars and lightly strummed electric lines, chamber-pop strings that rise and fall in brief dramatic swells, and sudden flashes of brass and woodwinds support restrained, conversational vocals, making this Orchestral Pop album feel like strolling through a beautifully manicured park where the flowers are in bloom but warning signs quietly line the paths.

Liked it

Grundsolide ohne Ausreißer nach oben oder unten.

its good but i dont think i'd ever listen to it in my free time. like i dont see myself wanting to listen to this over other albums. very vibey tho

Nice 60s vibe. Just not my cup of tea. Can see why its in the 1001 cannon.

Nice record, only really knew Alone Again Or but the arrangements are great throughout, though none of the other songs are quite as immediate.

This was a really fun album to listen to. I don't know what I expected from the name and album art but it wasn't this. The guitar playing and singing blend well and the feeling throughout the album is coherent and really places you in a calm mood. Its not the kind of music I listen to a lot and this experience wont change that but I'm still happy I listened through it and experienced it.

Virkelig lækker lyd, men Love Again Or er helt åbenlyst standout-nummeret

Decent. Listenable. Doesn't really strike powerfully me in any way, but there were a few decent tracks and otherwise the album made for something nice to listen to in the background. Whelmed. I was whelmed.

I like the 70s rock sound

Good 60s pay-rock

I liked this more than I thought I would. It's very hippie, but the arrangements are done pretty well.

Started off very strong but the end fell flat for me

Fine; I guess

Did not expect much from this album but I was surprised of how much I ended up enjoying this album as a whole. Has power where it needs it and soft calming songs as well to fill the space. 9/10 I read it was a favourite of Jim Morrison and I see why he took notes from his songs here. Very hippie and psychedelic folk music. Really liked the guitar work in this really interesting arrangements, they even put some flamenco and horns in there. Some songs were very dark and folksy. Kind of reminded me of other progressive bands from that era, overall the standout really was the instrumentals here. I enjoyed the blues influence too. It’s folk rock, psychedelic pop, and baroque orchestration all blended into one album. Its very melancholic and deeply reflective. Nothing else from that era really sounds like this. It’s not an album that hits you immediately with big hooks but it slowly sinks in. Each listen reveals more layers. I totally 'love' album cover too. Very psychedelic and abstract, like the logo itself! My favourite tracks are Alone Again Or, A House Is Not A Motel, The Daily Planet, Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale, Live And Let Live and You Set The Scene.

Waaaaaay softer and folkier than I anticipated. I guess I didn’t know this band at all.

generic, inoffensive 60s slop. 3/5

Hmm, what can I say? “Forever Changes” is a fairly ordinary 60s folk rock album—it sounds as you'd expect, it's not annoying, but it also has few moments that make you sit up and take notice. The first thing that really struck me was that on “A House Is Not a Motel,” someone made the guitar solo really loud. In a live situation, that would be remarkable in a positive sense; on the album it's... surprising. Otherwise... Yes, Love was obviously a pretty good band, tight and clean without technical support (which basically didn't exist in 1967, so that's actually a sign of quality – unfortunately, there are enough negative examples on this list). Since it lacks really exciting ideas, I still consider it mediocre.

Never listened to any Love before, but I enjoyed the folk-esque vibes of this album. It's a very easy listen that just feels like 1967. Top tracks: Alone Again Or, Bummer in the Summer, The Daily Planet

La fin me semblait plus intéressante avec Live and let Live et Bummer in the Summer.

Easy listening but wasn’t really for me unfort

Nice psychedelia that never quite excited. May be worth another go

I listen to a lot of 60s music, so I definitely recognized a few of these songs. I just never realized Love was the band behind them. That part was kind of a cool surprise. The Spanish style guitars and the Latin trumpet parts sprinkled throughout were a nice touch and gave the album its own flavor. Pretty solid listen while I spent the afternoon working in the yard but I don’t see myself going back to it.

never heard of them until today

Not bad though somewhat forgettable. No bad songs but no standout songs either.

I just can't get into Love. It's not bad, but I've tried a couple times including this listen and I just ain't feeling it.

Really stands up well after 58 years.

Beatles vibes.

Favorite track was live and let live

Forever Changes was certainly a pretty good album. This album definitely seems to be a pretty big deviation to their prior album "Da Capo" in a lot of ways. While that album had a very rough sort of sound, this one feels a lot more polished and orchestral. I don't think this change was bad because the songs here still sounded good and that distorted guitar did return for one track and added some nice variety. I still think i liked their last album more though, I just like the more rough sound as it gave it more character, this album just blended in a lot more with it's contemporaries. I still enjoyed this album to a decent extent though. Best Song: Live and Let Live Worst Song: Bummer in the Summer

Didn't really know anything about this band or album. It sounds like a run of the mill 1967 album, using all of the same tropes and hooks most bands were doing back then to try to get some radio play. That said it's still pretty enjoyable for me because I just like that era of music so much.

Surprised I’ve never heard of them but they felt like a mix of Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane. No songs really stood out on the album but also nothing dragged on and were mostly enjoyable.

It’s pretty good.

It's alright. Good for background listening, but the tracks are kinda forgettable.

Good but not for me

A kind of psychedelic folk with baroque pop and orchestral flourishes bringing to life often sophisticated songwriting. The record has a mournful feel that can be a bit overbearing after a while. Not in the center of my wheelhouse, but can appreciate the artistry and ambition.

Well done psychedelia.

Alone Again Or and Maybe the People Would Be the Times... are clear stand outs. The rest just do not do it for me. Production is pretty decent, I just don't really love the overall album apart from a few tracks

Some interesting ideas, like combining folk with string arrangements, but most of the songs amount to just two chords and monotonous vocals.

So sixties, even their voices sound like they’re from the sixties haha. Some of the lyrics are silly to me but not in a bad way, they’re just simple and true.

There aren't any brilliant standout songs for me, album was a nice listen though, really nice production for its time.

Had a few songs I really liked. Also had moments where I suddenly remembered, oh yeah, I'm listening to this... & it's not that long of an album..

Bought this as a teenager as I think Q magazine had called it one of the albums of the 60's. I tried very hard to like it but it never really connected. Listening again now I can appreciate the lushness of the arrangements and the psychedelic leanings.

3.5/5 cool bass, cool synths, but im too dumb for the lyrics. songs feel a little long/they drag on for a bit. overall i like the funky beats but the vocals feel too (old (??)) liked the sax in rio beat in The Chauffeur is amazing

3/5 - First couple of songs and Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale were very good, aside from that cool but not really noteworthy

Counterculture makes me tired.

Fine. Listenable I suppose.

Haven't listened to it in a long time and I know it's supposed to be like the best album ever but I didn't really feel it sorry folks Fav song: Andmoreagain

This had some good sounds but didn’t really get me too excited.

I didn't really know Love before although I have heard the opening track before. That's probably the highlight, I like the second track as well, the rest it started to sound like a lot of the mid-60s psychedelic rock on this list. Of which there is a lot. I did enjoy the strings and brass in particular though, some nice arrangements here albeit i found the second side a bit forgettable

Decent

weird beetles

2.6 Pretty bland 60s psychadelica poprock. Might have helped spurned a generation of music but in isolation there's nothing really catchy to draw me in. No really terrible tracks, but no good ones either

There's some really cool guitar play here. A mixture of Spanish plucking and rapid strumming. Many times the chorus is joined by some big stomping chords. Vocal harmonies aplenty in this album. I may be getting a little fatigued from these '60s folk rock groups. It seems like they all share very similar qualities with maybe a stand out song to refer to.

Mid-tier psychedelic 1960s Rock Music. There isn't much to love, or hate about this album. Favorite Track: "Live And Let Live"

Pleasant but unremarkable

6/10… baroque Pop / psychedelic rock

I feel quite conflicted about the album. It's pleasant enough but it doesn't grab me. It's ok...i guess

Strong first half that had me hoping for something that would transcend all of psych rock’s bad tropes. Didn’t totally do that. Verbose and intelligible at least. My pick is easily “House Is Not A Motel” 3/5

New to me (except for the first track). Enjoyable. Three stars. Surprised I haven't heard more about Love over the years.

Nice little 60s album 6/10
