Not completely terrible

Weinig wat je niet al ooit eens gehoord hebt. Geen idee waarom deze plaat nou echt in deze lijst moet staan.

Generic punk. Very repetitive Didn't hate but won't be going back

Absolutely average album by all possible standards. Punk? Average. Innovative? Not so much. Did I like it? Not really, although it wasn't that bad. In my opinion a good punk album should bring a a very fast-paced tempo, funny and real lyrics and a inspired vocal. The Adverts sounded like an advert for a punk band, something we would listen to in radio or tv, and that's not the way, for sure. No need to explain it further - this time a little below average 2 stars.

Good punk album

Meh, kind of bland.

The ultimate A level band in the back room of a pub.

68/100: I find it interesting that I can like grunge as much as I do, yet every single punk album I've come across so far in this project I've found entirely uninteresting. The Adverts didn't buck this trend. I found this album super repetitive and boring. I guess punk just kind of sucks.

Generic 70s punk.

All of the late 70's brit-punk hallmarks are there, but it's the blend chaos-to-polish-ratio and their more expansive lyrical focus, that sets the Adverts apart. It's like that noteworthy, albeit significantly lesser known, ancestor that gets a sentence or two in the genealogy.

ANGRY TEEN YEAH ANGRY TEENS

Crossing the Red Sea With the Adverts is melodic but average punk, lacks the punch all good punk needs. 2/5.

Pretty unremarkable punk record. Maybe I'm being harsh, it's not unpleasant, but it's a bit less raw than the rest of the punk we've had, particularly from that era. It doesn't sound as angry and lashing out in the same way that the best punk albums do - you can't listen to them without feeling a bit of that emotion, but this didn't move me at all. 2/5.

An okay punk album by the adverts. Lyrically this felt like a whiny compilation of songs that did not seem that hard core. The guitar riffs were pretty solid and overall the band played well. I don’t think I’d revisit this one much and it seemed kinda run of the mill for me. 5.0/10

waiting to be grabbed

31st August 2022 Listened in the morning while working from home. Had dinner with mum and dad then watched Liverpool Newcastle. Sounds like a cross between the sex pistols and sonic youth. Diet pistols. 2.5 if I could.

I wish I could run back and increase the score I gave to The Damn. This is one-dimensional and the big hit gets tired fast.

After getting two punk albums on consecutive days I’m all plunked out

Some ass kickin' punk.

Really not my type of music so I’ll just say I didn’t enjoy really at all and leave it at that. 3/10

Yeah, that’s punk. Nothing too severe or unpleasant but I was very happy to turn it off before they started playing through bonus tracks.

This gets 2 stars because it's one of the most listenable punk albums we've had from this list. And with most listenable I mean that's it's still actually quite bad, but it's not completely unlistenable.

Nothing noteworthy. 5/10

Punk je suis pas trop fan ça s'écoute correct 2.95

Authentically punk and believably angry (e.g., they sound like “Bored Teenagers") and even kind of substantive, but so narrow as to be one note.

Album is just too long.

They sure were angry back then. By today’s standards, they’re mostly noisy.

Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts by The Adverts (1978) This is highly evangelical and evangelistic Britpunk, summoning the listener to join in all the punkness. The Adverts sing, “We're just bored teenagers, looking for love or should I say emotional rages . . .” Actually, they were no longer teenagers. But the rage is relentless. They’re relying on the new church of strength, not the old Church of blindness and weakness, delivering a passionate altar call (“New Church”). Assertive, aggressive, ambitionless, and angry “subterranean vandals” drowning mutant freaks (“Drowning Men”) have harsh judgments in store for those who are content to embrace the permanent things. They want to chew up their culture and spit it out. And (this is key) they want the listener to join them. They are not content to suffer their nihilities alone. And they express gratitude to God for their superior perception and fortitude (“Bombsite Boy”). They acknowledge and even celebrate their lack of musicianship (“One Chord Wonders”) and they “don’t give a damn”. Somehow that seems to fit. The most interesting track is “Gary Gilmore’s Eyes”, in which Advert considers what it would be like for a patient to have his sight restored by a cornea transplant from the eyes of recently-executed murderer Gary Gilmore (a murderer whose penultimate words were “Just Do It” [inspiring the Nike advert], but his final words were “Dominus vobiscum.” The Catholic priest ministering at the execution duly replied Et cum spiritu tuo. Advertise that.) There are some intriguing arrangement innovations (“On the Roof”), and the performances throughout are competent enough, but these musical pluses fall far short of compensating for the drearily antagonistic lyrics. I suppose this album could have a cathartic effect on the listener, but after catharsis the wound needs to heal. May I recommend Gregorian chant? 2/5

Not my style

Not good. A song about Gary Gilmore? Really?

Klassicher Brit-Punk, erste Welle, woll?

Unsophisticated and quite samey. I remember their hit but wouldn’t have been able to remember the band name! 2*

I feel like there's just too much of this type of stuff on this list.

1978: Gary Gilmore's Eyes

Punk is not my genre. Shouty, repetitive, and poorly produced. Gave up halfway through.

Run of the mill

Super annoying.

Not for me

Mostly noise

White british 70s punk rock. Right. This fucking list has been on a generational run of shit from a butt recently. At least there's a woman in this one. But women can also make shitty music #feminism. Holy fuck I don't wanna sit through this. I mean it's nice I would've enjoyed it if I was an angsty teen at the time but like I don't gaf. I'm a bored teenager listening to this. Why do I need to have hear this before I die? Like at least with some of the bad ones I didn't enjoy them by any means but I understand why I should've heard it before I die they're singular. This is so boring and predictable and homogenous with the sound of the time. Wow you're a punky British rebel. I dont care. Get a real schtick. I'm too much of a hater to be doing this. Like sure man. Whatever. Favourite: Gary Gilmore's Eyes Least Favourite: On the Roof

not digging it

Offensively boring and generic

звучить все однаково

Album 139. Crossing the Red Sea With the Adverts (https://open.spotify.com/album/7Lwhf0KIxKSRnwyrQqhp7H?si=rdkRwRuARROgY0_ZRFO88w) — The Adverts (1978) It's a fucking barrage of endless shit. Pile of nauseating punk rock songs. I'm suffering after the album and on the edge between living and dying 1/5 No liked songs

These punk bands overstay their welcome. What happened to quick and punchy albums?

One long and boring song, everything sounded the same and it’s not to my taste.

I hate punk

i didn’t even try to listen to this….

ENOUGH WITH THE PUNK PLEASE

Oi oi fuck off

The Buzzcocks are calling, just to laugh at your pathetic attempt to rip them off. Buzz off wankers!

bunch of guys who don't know how to read learned how to play their instruments from a book

Too rough

It's punk so sounds the all tracks sound the same

it’s not good for me

I want to thank Robert Dimery for making me realise how much I FUCKING HATE punk music. I abhor British punk with a passion, actually the British as a whole. EUROPE IS MORE THAN THE UK. I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE. This list is making me hate the Brits more and more each day; they're gonna end up as my sworn enemy by the time i finish this.

GOING IN: No strong feelings LISTENED WHILE: Walking the dog, am. FAMILIARITY: New to me SKIP RATE: Skipped half of it REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Fair enough BODY'S VERDICT: Toe tapping situation My Rating: 1 Very tame "punk"

Ho-hum UK punk rock from 1978. Singer T. V. Smith lacks a distinctive voice, putting him in the company of the dozens of anonymous punk rock shouters of the time. The band's sound is also pretty generic three-chord distorted rama-lama with no memorable tunes or hooks.

Some punk is seriously mediocre

I gave up about 2/3 of the way through, at "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" - this just isn't for me at all.

Not great. Every song sounded exactly the same, and none were to my liking. They were like a bad version of the Smiths.

Couldn’t make it all the way through got over half way and had to stop, just noise

Punk I’ve never heard of??

noisy punks

Nah, every single song sounds the EXACT same.

Not my bag. Exceedingly middling Clash rip-offs.

umm why was this on the list.. it had just about zero impact on me who were these guys again?

The British colonized music like they colonized the global south. I'd rather drink warm fracking water than listen to another sub-par British rock band. In lieu: I recommend listening to the album Thunderbitch by Thunderbitch. It's a Brittany Howard band that only put out this album in 2015. This is roughly during the end of her time with Alabama Shakes and before her time with Bermuda Triangle and then her solo career. Much better rock than these white boys singing about a murderer's preserved eye balls.

Everything sounds the same. It's too loud. Kind of stresses me out.

Am I losing my mind or did all the songs sounded exactly the same?

Nah, not really feeling it.

Thought this would be dreadful like all punk but it was just quite boring

trashy 80's garage band rock

horrible boring shrum shrum rubbish

Blödes Rumgeschreie

Weird and. Not sure what kind of music it is.

Another punk album that I completely forgot every single thing about the second it stopped

I'd rather watch adverts

So boring + not on spotify

This album was the great british mistake they were talking about

Oh great, another English Punk band. What did I just say on the last album? I'm properly done with this rubbish. You know what we should have started doing? Each album we think doesn't belong on this list we add in our comments what our substitute would be because it's insane. I'll be curious to look and see what our percentages are. I'd be my opinion on over 60% of this list would be to swap with a better album, and I bet the general public would agree on 50% of those. It's not a secret how bias this list is. I can barely listen to this, it sounds like so much I've heard before, nothing new or noteworthy.

I like a bit of punk from time to time. Bit too punky this time.

Nope. Punk is not for me. I just don't get the interest. But that's me, I'm not the right generation for this music. Tried to listen to the whole thing, but, no.

Adolescent punk

Not available in Apple Music.

Every song sounds the same.

Don’t like

No one needs to hear this album before they die. More mediocre british rock.

Sounds like generic 70/80's British punk, but not as polished and versatile as something like the Sex Pistols.

¿Y éstos quiénes son?

Not for me. Hard rock + british. Nope. Culturally sigificant is that their bassist, Gaye Advert, was one of the first female stars of punk rock.

I just cannot get in to Punk rock music. I do try.

Not my cup of tea

Only a couple songs I used to enjoy

I guess it was influential and helped define the genre, but far from that it was a draining experience. Pretty basic and repetitive. I do like british punk, but some early bands sound exactly the same and don't pass the test of time. Everybody agrees on 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes' being the best track. Don't ask me.

Run of the mill 70’s punk that leans main stream rock

Typical boring repetitive punk rock. I do like his voice. Pretty painful listen.

Strong dislike. Just not a a fan of British punk rock at all. Too much yelling, every song songs almost exactly the same. Way too 'angsty' for me to enjoy at all. I don't think there are any bands like them that I enjoy. 2/10

Too loud & in your face

Ehh. Not great. Not my style. Too heavy

I never heard of these guys until now. After hearing it, I can see why.

I can't figure out why this is even on the list. It's instantly ignorable and forgettable, nothing interesting at all, not even in a bad way really. It's just nothing.

Really nothing all that interesting....definitely the most generic out of the "formative late 70s British punk bands" we have listened to before. Had never heard of them prior to this listen and nothing I heard made me felt I should have... 1.5/5

Another punk record that I just can’t get into. Very samey and just not interesting.

I don't have much patience for early punk

Not a fan. 1/5 stars.
