Reviews (page 5 of 7)
This style of 70s rock isn’t my favorite but they did fine. My favorite was “Bored Teenagers”
It wasn’t bad.
Honestly not too crazy about this one, dig the style but no real hooks, saved the one song about that guys eyes tho.
This album was enjoyable with no real standouts. I almost could give it a two stars, especially coming off of Dark Side of the Moon, but wasn’t bad. I’ll stick with the 3 stars
Solid. High 2 or low 3. Making it a 3 for maybe inspiring that Pokemon song.
I listened to this album but I can’t tell you anything about it that has any substance. Less abrasive than a lot of punk rock, but it’s punk rock so is that actually a good thing? I didn’t dislike it and it’s better than a lot of other albums we’ve come across so far.
I liked it! I'm surprised I haven't heard of The Adverts before. This album didn't blow me away. I probably won't listen to it again, but I appreciate listening to it at least once. I'm glad I'm getting so much punk history.
It's punk
Good album. Really nice punk album and great debut from a band I didn't know. It drags a little for the hour runtime, but it's got a nice punchy punky groove throughout. ***
pretty chill first song is a banger
Some fun, raw early punk. Not a ton else to say but there are some fantastic ideas here
Punk and fast and fun
there are 71 albums on this website under the genre of "Punk". this is one of those aforementioned 71 albums. it sounds Powerfully Suitable.
Quite liked that
It's classic punk stuff. Not my favourite from the era, but a great album nonetheless. Its always good to hear 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes'.
Kelpoa vanhaa punkkia. Sopivan rähinällistä. Parhaat: Safety In Numbers, Bored Teenagers
Alright
OK 70s punk, playlisted one song.
Un poco todo igual. Nada nuevo.
Might have been more impressed in 1978.
Huh? Wasn’t bad but I wouldn’t be listening to them going forward
Catchy and upbeat. Let's see if it lasts beyond the first track. a 3 is generous. Not a bad album, but boring and not personally relevant to my life at this time.
Pretty good 70s punk album. Nothing to special.
average
One of the better punk bands from the late 1970s. The Spotify album / 2002 reissue includes their hit single "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" which I remember buying. Beginning to sound a bit dated now.
Punk rock.
Nice.
Not too shabby. Some catchy tunes. If only it weren't for the ugly double voice effect or whatever canon punk technique that is. I tried unfocusing my ears like you do with your eyes when looking at stereograms but it didn't work.
Hadn't heard of this band. Good old school punk, lots to like.
Great 70's English punk. Informed enough by their predecessors to really key in on their own sound, but too late to reach the acclaim of doing it first. Another album that never got quite the attention it deserved, and it's historical notes reflect that
Good
Fine. Good even! I get the feeling that I won't remember a single thing about The Adverts in about three days though.
Yep this is a good British punk album agree it deserves to be on the list, but nothing really stand out vs the clash of sex pistols that I’m likely to come back to it.
UK punk fuck yea!
oku dios santo. 6/10
Good energy, little raw, but decent album
It’s ok
Ok, but also generic
Some 'generic punk' vibes, but it has nice energy
It was ok
Another unknown Artist, but i liked it.
This is as good as many of the British 70s punk in this list. but i still liked it a lot. radio edits and live versions were unnecessary!
They have some good energy. Not very difficult or varied, but it's fun.
My lack of punk knowledge is probably surprising as a 70's child, and puts me in the minority. After being pleasantly surprised by the Sex Pistols album I was open-minded going into this album. It wasn't awful, but it was nowhere near as good as the Sex Pistols album. I'll go with 3 stars.
Its decent. Doesn't do anything drastically or amazing different compared to similar artists of the time/genre. I definitely think there are better examples of the genre out there. favourites: \"gary gilmore's eyes\", \"no time to be 21\", \"great british mistake skips: all single edits and lives
It was okay, but nothing special.
A lot of good snappy tunes on this record.
Some nice lyrics and plenty of energy
Meh punk
Very interesting early punk that I hadn’t really listened to before. 3.4
Super solid, 3.5
This was a lot of fun!!
This didn’t leave a big impression on me but in general I like 70s punk. Somewhere between a 3 and 4 for me.
Best wel leuke punk 3
Generic punk rock, kinda. There’s good songs, but the rest are just mediocre. It’s meh.
Never heard of this, but (even though the album came out once punk was already dead) it's great 1st wave British punk so basically just regular ol' rock played fast and sloppy with a bit of a snarl to it. Classic teenage themes of being bored, rejecting religion, fighting bullies, staying up late and hanging with the fellas. Lots of chaotic energy, a lingering pop sensibility that leads to some very catchy melodies, and despite the adverts, songs with 3+ chords! The Great British Mistake is incredibly prescient for some 70s punks - staring complacently at your own past as history passes you by. Hmm... Favorites: One Chord Wonders, Bored Teenagers, Newboys, On Wheels, Great British Mistake
Early UK punk? I see it been retrospectively given accolades that rank it alongside the Clash s/t and "Bollocks" I say no. It's ok but just a bit of unremarkable pub rock.
Enjoyed this. Can’t decide whether that’s because I listened to it just after being forced to listen to a god awful Emerson, Lake & Palmer live album that made me wish I didn’t have any ears. Will listen again. 3.3
It's punk.
Not bad.
So this could have been such a much better album with a professional engineer and recording! I think they were probably on a low budget. But what do I know. I hope those people don't hunt me down for revenge.
Not a big punk rock fan, but thought it was a good punk album.
Hate to criticize bands that tried But these guys didn’t do it for me. Seemed like they were sprinting to end the songs
decent! no standout tracks though
Good, listenable punk record. Some good tunes here.
Some moments of creative greatness but overall left me a bit cold.
3 stars
Voir review de The Good, The Bad & The Queen.
Poppiest punk I have ever heard for a while, and I kind of dig it.
At its core, the album captures late-1970s Britain, a period marked by economic uncertainty, social unrest, and a palpable sense of angst among the youth. This backdrop is crucial for understanding the resonance of The Adverts' debut, which channels the era's turbulence through its visceral soundscapes and candid lyrical content. Musically, "Crossing the Red Sea" distinguishes itself with a melodic tint that threads through its tracks, as notably heard in "New Church." This melodic sensibility, woven amidst the raw chords and aggressive rhythms typical of punk, adds a layer of accessibility to the album, making it stand out from its contemporaries. It's this blend of melody and mayhem that elevates the album, showcasing The Adverts' ability to marry punk's abrasive ethos with hooks that linger long after the record stops spinning. Lyrically, the album oscillates between profound social commentary and the more mundane grievances of its teenage audience, epitomized by tracks like "Bored Teenagers." The song, while possibly tongue-in-cheek, encapsulates the paradox of punk's revolutionary spirit confronted by the ennui of its protagonists. It's a humorous, if somewhat ironic, reflection on the luxury of boredom in an era of supposed teenage angst and rebellion. This juxtaposition invites listeners to ponder the authenticity and depth of punk's critique against a backdrop of historical struggles where such boredom was a luxury few could afford. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, "Crossing the Red Sea with The Adverts" remains a pivotal album within the punk genre. It is a testament to the power of music to capture and express a moment in time, even if that expression sometimes veers into the realm of the paradoxical. The Adverts' debut is both a product of its time and a timeless reflection on youth, rebellion, and the quest for meaning amidst societal malaise. The album's enduring appeal lies not just in its musical innovations or lyrical acuity but in its unvarnished portrayal of a generation in transition. It's a snapshot of punk at its most raw and reflective, offering a melodic take on the genre's otherwise stark narrative. "Crossing the Red Sea with The Adverts" is, therefore, a must-listen for those seeking to understand the depth and diversity of punk's legacy.
More melodic than anticipated. Energetic. A bit repetitive.
Nicht so schlecht. Aber austauschbar! 3
Decent punk album. Rating: 3.3
A solid punk album. Very much in line with the sound of its time. The album was easy to listen to but not very groundbreaking. None of the songs stood out to me as fantastic or must listen to's but if someone put this on I would enjoy it.
Sounds exactly like I thought it would. Not bad, not amazing.
I am quite surprised to find myself enjoying a punk album. Not my favorite thing I’ve ever listened to, but I didn’t find any of it offensive and even liked a few tracks. That’s a feat for me in this genre.
Yep, sounds like British punk.
Decent British punk
Ok punk
This project has conditioned me to expect that any album cover or artist name I don't recognize will be British, and oh would you look at that, this one is exactly that, British. This album cover is a goddamned eyesore. It failed to make an impact when first launched, and only when looking back did critics give it any of its due. I like 70's punk, and this fits the bill, but it's a bit too little too late for me to ever hold it in the same regard as The Clash or The Ramones. Meh.
- One Chord Wonders
Just another 70s punk rock album - nothing really special about it. 6/10
fun! kinda all sounds the same. not in a bad way. i like these guys
Generally inoffensive, which isn't a compliment for punk bands. Crazy that this was being compared to the first Clash album? Have some respect. Overall it's fine.
Would be a low 4 but it just doesnt sound that great… The mixing is all over the place. But the music is good stuff
Have this one. Has some bangers but is hit or miss
Thoughts before listening: 70s British punk rock band that were contemporaries of the Sex Pistols and Clash, but never received the high accolades of those bands. The Adverts have mostly been forgotten to time, and while I have heard the band name, I have never actually heard their music. I like a lot of early punk rock so this should be something that I enjoy. Review: This is better than I was expecting with some very catchy songs that are more akin to a pop punk sound like the Buzzcocks than the snotty attitudes of the Sex Pistols. The sound is really good with clear vocals and music that avoids the typically murky production of early punk rock. I am pleasantly surprised with this one and really can't believe this has never crossed my radar before. That being said, the song quality is a bit of a mixed bag. I really like "One Chord Wonders", "Bored Teenagers", "Gary Gilmore's Eyes", "No Time to Be 21", and "The Great British Mistake" but the rest of the album can be a little bland. Not bad necessarily, just doesn't really have any hooks to pull you in. Ultimately this is a solid 3-star album that doesn't quite rise to the heights of its contemporaries that have reached legendary status.
I can never get mad at a bunch of lads screaming into a microphone and playing their guitars as loud as their amps will allow. There are some surprises here too though. The majority of the album is fast, short, don't-overthink-it punk. But there are a lot of memorable melodies and they've definitely got some tricks up their sleeves. The band can get a little dark and they can get a little weird. I actually heard a little MGMT in a few songs. I'm sure this is a band that countless bands would call an influence. Curious to listen again and hear more from the band.
I enjoyed it
This was some good fun punk! It was a peppy start to my morning. Looking through Gary Gilmore's eyes is stuck in my head big time
This is pretty good. Gary Gilmore's eyes is the best. I remember my dad singing that song to me when I was little which is a bit weird thinking about the context of the song.
This was an English punk album.
I feel like I'm missing something with this album.
Who knew I would like punk
One Chord Wonders Gary Gilmore"s Eyes
THPS/10
Not a real breakout in my eyes, but as a fan of this era of punk I still found it a fun listen. It has the right ingredients, but none of the songs stood out as real scene stealers.
True to the name this is a fun filler between the main event, whatever that may be. Of its time, but raucous seems to fair reasonably well.
the only great british mistake was this album... i kid of course, this album was okay-ish! A solid 3*, but ill never return
raucous, fun, yet somewhat clean kinda poppy brit punk for your tony hawk's pro skater montage reel or 90s surfing competition
Too long but better than I thought it would be when I learned what it was.
Punk rock at its most serviceable. I prefer the Undertones this feels very average sounding, I appreciate the focus yet it is not remarkable to me. the second half has some better songs I guess.
Not as punky as would have been cool. Should have traded some of the pop for the punk. And was just a tad short. Overall, I don’t see myself as being able to remember this album a month from now. Although, I did enjoy it. Very middle of the road and inoffensive. 3/5
punk. got it.
It was punk music. No song in particular stands out. It was alright and relatively short. For no reason in particular I will round up.
That was sort of fun and I liked it... Until I didn't
dont hate this at all, but I might just not get it, great energy and sometimes whatever songs
Some good, exuberant British punk from the late 70s. It was fun to listen to, but I'm not going to be headed back any time soon.
This one was not very interesting to me. I really struggled to not just tune it out as it played. Not painful, just bland.
Next 5 songs played by my Spotify Algorithm: X - When Our Love Passed Out on the Couch Redd Kross - Annette's Got the Hits The Ruts - Criminal Mind Generation X - Night of the Cadillacs X -Ray Spex - I Can't Do Anything
Very punk. Very British. Very… easy to tune out.
So many British punk albums. What the fuck. We can have less on this list
Mal ein 70er-Punkalbum, dass mir sehr zusagt. 3,5 Sterne.
I liked this more than I expected. On No Time to Be 21, I realized I was getting some Rocky Horror vibes and that's a compliment. Rating 3 stars.
Fun punk.
I hope the next album is nevermind.
High energy, English early punk. I like the sound of everything: the guitars, the drums, the angsty group vocals. This is what I think of when I think of true punk. Maybe a little one note for me for a bit though, I don't know if I can see myself returning to it. The Clash does this and also interjects more interesting and memorable songs and textures and magical genres.
Well - it exists. Although I thought I had a fairly good awareness of this era, I'd never heard of them. Nothing jumps out at me now
3.5
It's not that I didn't like the album, it's just that punk music never really hit the spot for me.
Solid punk album. Reminded me of the Clash.
This is fine. There has been a lot of punk and brit rock on this list, and this doesn't do much to stand out from what is becoming a crowded field for me, but I could see given when this came out the influence this could have had, but better stuff has since come out.
Idk i wasn’t really paying attention. Sorry
2.5
No idea what this is. Ahh, punk, as most would come to know it. Plenty of power chorded youthful energy, with the occasional minor barre thrown in for mood and menace. Glammy, theatrical vocals, clever word play. Still, not reaaally my cup o tea. A bit one note and simple unmagical as I find most punk
Started out slow, every song kind of sounds the same, then grows towards the end of the album. The instruments are good, but I didn't like the singers voice as much. 3.5/5 Would probably listen again
Pretty banger album!
2/10, 20%
Good energy.
Lots of energy, but rather dated sound. Really caught my ear a couple times, particularly the guitar solos. I'd never heard of these guys, I wonder what happened to them.
Decent early punk album that has, unfortunately, been overshadowed in the intervening years. Still worth a listen.
Punk. Bastante melódico.
The kinda stuff you hoped to discover
I really like this album, grew up listening to The Adverts, but it makes zero sense that this is on a "must hear" list. Maybe a '70s UK punk albums you must hear before you die' would be OK, but still debatable. A good punk record and that's it (but it's still way better rhan the generic 60s stuff)
Not bad.
Lame punk
Compelled me to realize seeing life through Gary Gilmore's Eyes was a lifelong wish I never knew I had.
A pretty decent early punk album but nothing too memorable
It would be very easy for me to give this a 2, because I’ve given a lot of 3s lately, because I’m tired of punk/punk-ish albums on this list, and because I’ve never even heard of this band, so it can’t be a historically important record, right? I do think it's one of the better old-school punk albums I've come across though. There are strong melodies and engaging vocals, on a handful of tracks at least. It does get a bit 'meh' in the second half though. 2.5 / 3
Okay, vintage post-punk and one sees how it points forward, but ultimately of pretty limited merit. Feels lik one of the editor's pet projects.
Crikey, a good 70s punk album. Catchy and melodic. There is some substance to the style in this case. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: No Time to Be 21 Date listened: 15/07/23
Didn't wow me, but it was fine.
Nothing special. Not terrible though.
A decent Brit-Punk album. Enjoyed it, but can't see myself ever returning to it. 2.5/5
It's fine. I am tired of 70s British Punk and Rock on this list. Period. Especially long punk albums that sound the same. I am noticing a trend towards British/English artists in general.
Ok punk
can’t say i liked it but i liked it WAY more than i was expecting to following the first track
Pretty good punk, but I’d have to be in the right mood, and it’s tough to listen to the whole thing in one sitting.
Another bridge between punk and new wave. Fine as it is but there are better examples.
This was tight! More my speed, love the sound. Favorite track is Newboys. Will definitely check out their other albums.
Yes, it's punk, but it's so repetitive that it loses 2 or 3 stars in my rate
Surprisingly mellow and catchy punk album
Mostly fun, a bit long and repetitive for me though. Favorite track: One Chord Wonders
For a genre I don't really like, this was pretty enjoyable.
Great album. The beginnings of a lot
punky
This was all a bit same samey.
Not a bad dose of energetic, happy punk. They certainly seem to be having fun and they sound more musically competent than many of their peers. I'll check out further.
Curti Gary Gilmore's Eyes
Meh. Average punk. So I was not too impressed. But it could have been worse.
More early Brit punk, not as good as the dammned
Does the job.
I'm sure this inspired a lot of music I like, but it didn't feel super substantial. It's possible that it's lost some gravitas due to the fact that I'd never heard of this band before, but otherwise it was just fine, if not underwhelming. Standouts: One Chord Wonders, Great British Mistake
Not a genre I find personal enjoyment in, but it was so refreshing to listen to a punk album where the vocals were actually strong and held up to the high energy music!
This was a pretty good punk album. I'm not entirely sure why this needed a place on this list as nothing really stood out to me much. Perhaps it was ahead of it's time, who knows?
Not familiar with this at all. Classic punk intensity, but these guys are not the “One Chord Wonders” you might expect - there are some clever hooks and strong vocal melodies. Standouts: Bombsite Boy, On Wheels, Great British Mistake 3.5
3.5
Pleasantly surprised, especially since it's punk
Pretty fun punk outing, although not the most exciting we've had on the list.
punk vocals sounding melodic
More British Punk! Wow! Better than most punk I've heard on this list, but still not great. At least the songs are discernable from one another
Da e greit, men like egentlig ikkje punk så godt
Rock rápido, con temas directos, cortos e intensos.
Mag blijven.
I enjoyed it - for me it doesn't really stand out from the other punk of its day.
Decent punk I suppose, but it got more annoying as it went on. A single by this band on a compilation or playlist would be fine, but a whole album just starts to sound fatiguing. Pales in comparison to their contemporaries like The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Damned, etc.
New wave punk-ish stuff. I dunno, I don't find it does much more than other contemporaries. When it's punk it's not punk enough, and when it's new wave it is too 80s. Alas.
3.4 - I like “Bored Teenagers” and the vocals on this post- punk album but little else left an impression.
Alright but repetitive.
Decent album, but nothing too standout. 3/5. Favorite Track: Great British Mistake
Great, classic punk album. Tightly composed, crisply paced, catchy. The album is a fun listen, but in the end a lot of the songs end up sounding alike and being unmemorable. That wears a little thin by the back half. Fave Songs: One Chord Wonders, Great British Mistake, Newboys, New Church, No Time to Be 21
british punk album w no real stand outs but good sound throughout
honest little punk
3.75
Tosi hyvä! Punk mutta rock myös, sillee alt-rock. No time to be 21 aina kova.
Omintakeista, musikaalista. Bombsite Boy, No Time To Be 21 ja Drowning Men ovat huippukappaleita, ja kaikki muukin on vähintään kuunneltavaa.
Reminds me of the Buzzcocks. Some pop-punk, horror, and maybe a touch of psychedelic... It's fine, just nothing incredible to me. Favorite tracks: "Bored Teenagers", "Bombsite Boy"
Melodious punk album, didn't know the band.
liked a few. might return but not sure about it
I like the simplicity of this album, also hate the simplicity of the album. Also, I'm tiring of the guitar. Good quality effort and appreciate the Gary Gilmore track which pokes fun at whomever got the infamous murderer's corneas after he was executed. This music elicits a yes, but it also elicits a 'no' because there really aren't many bands that I like with British singers. I like my bands to speak American.
Side A -> 🤘 Side B -> 🫤 Side A > Side B Solid album
Oi! Oi! Oi! 🤘 🤘 🤘
I’m gonna be honest… when I see 70s punk, my first thought is, “Oh, this is going to be a drag.” Hopefully I’m wrong, but this era of punk tends to mostly be people playing instruments badly, with bad tones, and an overly cockney man shouting over it all. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Bored Teenagers, Gary Gilmore’s Eyes Well my initial assumption was wrong. There is much more melody than I was expecting, with nice thick guitar tones. The first few songs started off well, but then the rest of the album (with the exception of Gary Gilmore’s Eyes) just became a bit of a snore-fest. I will say that the overall sound seems more modern than I expected, but it still wasn’t especially excited for me. Overall, it might appeal to anybody already very much into old school punk, but I doubt anybody else will get much from this.
Pretty decent British punk
It's a bummer that my run of good and memorable albums from last month has come to an end since the past week's worth have been completely boring to me and even the parts that did stand out have escaped my memory already. Same goes for this album, punk that I won't remember in like 2 days.
british punk rock. not sure who decided that this was an essential album. 3/5
Crossing the Red Sea With the Adverts is new music and a new band for me. ThereThe Adverts are a new band to me and new music. For me, the music felt like it pointed towards punk and maybe a little ska. There were even a track or two that got me think of progressive rock - I can't say why for sure but I was thinking of some of King Crimson's work into the early 80s with a track or two. Midway through the album, the music was feeling less new. My first listen was okay.
Not bad
Never listened to this before, not to bad.
Jájá, hresst og fjölbreytt pönk, fín rödd og töff gítar sound. Ætla ekki að sækjast eftir þessu en myndi ekki skipta um stöð ef eitt og eitt lag kæmi í útvarpinu.
One of the more forgotten punk rock bands from the dawn of punk rock, The Adverts never seem to get the same respect as the Buzzcocks, the Damned, or the Clash. Which is a shame, because I think these guys do a great job of creating an energetic punk sound that is also seemingly unique from their contemporaries.
It's perfectly average middle of the road. Once you've heard one song, you've heard it all. 2.5/5
Thrashy punk, with a sound that sounds almost current.
Good but repetitive
A pounding, frenetic garage rock LP – the instrumentals slap, the lyrics get the job done without being overly British, and the overall feel is upbeat and high energy. A bit overlong in places, but not enough to prevent a few of these tracks from ending up in my heavy rotation.
This album is proof that my listening habits are changing: when I heard it for the first time a few years ago I was really enthusiastic, it seemed to me like an approach to punk that I'd never heard before. Going back to it now, I just don't find it at all that incredible. It is certainly a good album and it's full of hooks and I can see how the band differentiate themselves from their peers of the time, but it just doesn't grab me the way I wish it would.
Average punk
Always nice to listen to some good old punk that hits hard AF
All new to me -- band, this album, their music -- and I really like it. All the same, there's a familiarity to their music when I listened to this album, which I attribute to other bands emulating in the years this band was active and later years. This album brings some excellent intense high energy without being so chaotic and thrashy that they lose me. I sometimes turn away from some punk (and related genres) bands because it can grate on me too much, or sometimes feel like they are just making things as crazy as possible for effect (if that makes sense). Because this album to my ears sounds more -- not sure the right word here, maybe "intentional"? -- and melodic, plus very well arranged and performed, I like it better than a lot of other punk. There's real talent here and I can hear it come through the recording. Good stuff.
same old same old
this is a fine early punk album.
Not the Clash
fun, late-70s punk. Nothing particularly remarkable and worth listening to.
Another group and album that is completely new to me. Based on the noisy cover I expect noisy music. And rolling the first track, yes, an immediate Joan Jett & the Blackhearts vibe but a bit angrier. Yeah, more Clash, really, especially since it sounds pretty darn English. Energetic, crisp, catchy, not really a bad song in the bunch. A quality example of its genre. Not sure why I'm not already familiar with it. I would have loved this back in the day.
Buen punk
It was not what I expected. Love the thought that some kids made it big and now are doing normal jobs. Or working in the music industry as titans of pop.
6/10 average punk rock album
Great english punk, kinda repeatable but the album wasn't too long
3, not familiar with, enjoyed it!
Aaaannd it's another punk record! But wait ... what do I hear? Could this be ... real songs, and not merely screams over badly tuned and inadequately played instruments?!? Granted, these songs sound simple, but I am pleasantly surprised how I can listen to quite a few of these without skipping or fast forwarding. I most like "One Chord Wonders". This alone isn't enough to make this a relly good record, but it isn't as horrible as I thought it would be either. 2.5/5
This was honestly pretty forgettable for me: Nothing objectionable but nothing particularly pleasing here either. Fave track: Gary Gilmore's Eyes. Catchy melody, solid harmonies. I appreciate it. But overall a solid meh for this album. Respectable meh.
70s punk, feel like we've had a lot of 70s punk and it's fine but I'm getting a tad bored of it
Punk doesn't often make for great albums but I liked this having not heard them before. Some decent tunes
3.5
Sve u svemu solidno, ali forgettable for me.
Not bad, but pretty generic punk rock in my opinion. All blends together, nothing really sticks out. 3
i like it very oldie vibe to it
Ok punk record
Good listen. Songs blended together
Standard 1970's British punk rock. Fast and fun. Nothing stands out to me but I'm fine with that. I don't think punk rock was ever meant to be groundbreaking. I could listen to this album more than once but I don't think that I need to even though I probably will.
A lot of fun, can be a bit samey at times but has enough changes in rhythm and sound to keep it from being too repetitive. The songs are short, straight to the point and seemingly quite literal most the time. Gary Gilmore's Eyes reminded my of my childhood fear about transplanted body parts. Did they predict Brexit with 'Great British Mistake'? haha (Don't take that joke too seriously).
Fun, angsty punk. A bit samey throughout the album, but no bad songs. Like. "Newboys" and "Safety in Numbers" the most
Great early punk
Short and consistent, some cool ideas and great energy, but hard to get super excited about it. The Great British Mistake is pretty ironic these days.
🎸🎸🚬🧑🏾🎤
Good early punk - one of the better late 70’s efforts I’ve heard. A more genuine angry teen vibe than early Who.
3 stars. This ain’t for me but considering it came out in the 70s it’s definitely ground breaking. Very punky
Seemingly way ahead of its time. Production could have been better but overall early great early punk that could have easily fit in with early 2000's music.
Generally enjoyed it.
Pretty enjoyable to listen to while listening, but now it's over I've already entirely forgotten it.
At a certain point, these songs start to sound all the same…which isn’t very punk rock if you ask me. Likes: New Church; No Time to be 21
I don't think I can quite give this a 3, but I'm glad to have heard it, as it had previously escaped my attention, and it's not half bad. Not that I'll be likely to come back to it again. As punk goes, this is better than most, in terms of being musically interesting and listenable. A higher-than-average 2.
I don't hate it, but its unfortunately the type of music that shows up too frequently on this list. Decent tunes, not much depth. I can't be asked to analyze it much further. I'll give it a light two for being somewhat catchy and somewhat edgy
This was very meh, I can see why it might have been interesting or groundbreaking back then but it just isn’t very good today. The songs are so simple and forgettable, listened twice and was just bored.
Another punk rock album in what seems like an endless stream
Nothing objectionable just standard punk rock. Hardly essential
Medium as far as Brit Pop punk goes. Not my genre. Not my style. I gave each track a few bars but just couldn't listen any longer..
Yeah yeah yeah thrash thrash thrash blam blam blam. Not into this.
I'm genuinely bemused as to how this album could be included in a top 100,000 album list, never mind a top 1001. It was just a monotone of sameness, and bland at that. Shouting and a fast BPM doesn't make it interesting. Never again will I listen.
The problem of time and place again; in the late 70s this was probably a little transgressive and interesting; now this type of sound has been played out so many times it's become dull. With nuance gone, the album is left with a few songs that would fit on a Tony Hawk soundtrack.
British punk is not my thing, and this even less so. Only a few tracks didn’t sound just like all the others, and most carried the same or similar hard static and reverb guitar chord structure in the background.
Overall: 4/10 Not a bad album by any means, but very generic and boring. Wasn't really feeling it at all and the generic punk sound got old pretty quickly. Fav Song: Bombsite Boy
No, I don't really like this. Still, 2 stars...
Saai
An okay rock album bordering on punk with some catchy choruses. Highlights: "Bored Teenagers" and "Gary Gilmore's Eyes"
Just ok for me
This was fine British punk. Nothing really stood out. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great.
There is nothing about this album that makes it stand out against other punk albums of the day.
Meh. Not for me
I liked this less than the other punk records we’ve had lately. I’m a little torn because I didn’t hate it enough for it to be a 2 but didn’t really like it enough to be a 3…. What can I say, I’m a harsh critic
This was really not good ☹️. Nothing stood out, it all sounded the same, and it was annoying. Overall, I would give this a 2.6/5! 🫤😐☹️😡🤬
Didn’t hate it. But the songs started to really blend together by the end.
Oh my more British punk….
Best Song: One Chord Wonders. This might just be because it was the first track in the album, and I hadn't yet soured on the sameness of the whole album. Also, there is a sliver of revolt/resistance in this song that is lacking most of the rest of the album. Worst Song: Drowning Man. The chorus is far weaker than they seem to think it is. Overall: Old punk that sounds so dreadfully old. There are some vaguely interesting tracks, but it feels very dull and slow relative to more contemporary forms of punk. There is still a through-line of pop in a Ramones sort of way that I wish wasn't there. Mostly, it's just kind of boring.
The Adverts remind me quite a bit of the Ramone’s with uptempo music led by a raw guitar sound and edgy, in your face vocals. The songs got monotonous after a few tracks but I’ll give them partial credit for mostly holding my attention with Punk music.
Best Track - "Gary Gilmore's Eyes"
Perfunctory
Pen og pyntelig britisk punk. Isolert sett bra, men for likt all annen britisk punk som fyller denne lista.
Crossing the Red Sea with The Adverts has energy and sharp riffs, but the whole proposal feels unfinished. Too polished to be raw, too hesitant to be radical, it ends up stuck halfway
Filler week continues with this unnecessary entry. This is punk music without any hard edges. It's polished and orderly and doesn't seem to have that fuck you vibe at all. It's fine to listen to, but nothing special or worthy of inclusion on this list.
FAVO: New Church
Much to think about...
was alrightt
Gave me an odd nostalgia, unsettling
marginal
Recht eintöniger Lärm
Not bad, but it’s just another punk album. Maybe a little more polished than most other punk outings.
Its fine
Wanted to like this, but it’s tough. One Chord Wonders, Great British Mistake and Gary Gilmore’sEyes are OK, but otherwise it’s quite repetitive and basic.
There's this irony that if you took the time to write a song about how you 'don't give a damn' then it implies that you, on some level, did give a damn. There's some actual variety here, little breaks in the punk mash-the-drums-as-fast-as-possible sound, but the songs blend together too much. Everytime a new song started, I thought it was a bridge before I looked at the song title and saw it changed. You can tap your toe to it and there's definitely worse punk out there, but I just dislike this genre. Too repetitive, too samey.
Completely and for all intents and purposes not memorable. Not bad, not great. Closer to 2 than 3.
So lala
Nothing all that memorable on this one. It was ok, for a so called punk band it was a little overproduced for my taste. It was more new wave sounding than punk, but I guess new wave gets lumped in with punk sometimes so who’s to say.
One of the better punk albums I've listened to on this site. Still didn't really excite me.
Honestly, this feels like this album has nothing to offer. Everything they do here was already done to death by the debut albums of both The Clash and Sex Pistols in 1977, the year prior to this release. This just seems like an also ran. Just your typical chugging repetitive power chord late 70s punk. Become tedious pretty quickly. I wasn't able to determine what differentiated this album from the previous acts mentioned. It might be a tad more listenable than most of the other punk albums of the era, but certainly not an essential entry to an all time list. You don't need more than the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, and maybe Blondie, to illustrated what late 70s punk was all about, to make the point and move on. There simply wasn't much sonic depth to punk at this point. For those still confused by the Gary Gilmore reference, he was a killer convicted of murder and sentenced to death. His was the first death sentence carried out since the death sentence was reinstated in the U.S. in 1976. He chose a death sentence by firing squad over death by hanging which Gilmore feared could be botched. It was the last such death sentence carried out by firing squad in the United States when it took place in 1977. Gary Gilmore's brother, Mikal Gilmore, was a noted Rolling Stone reporter at the time and it contributed to more music artists being aware of the situation and feeling inspired to write songs about Gilmore and his death. Gary Gilmore requested his organs be harvested and transplanted to needy people. Someone ended up receiving his corneas.
Cross it and stay there.
Punk
DNF LIFE is too short for totally average Brit punk rock
