Reviews (page 13 of 13)
Yeahhhh, I don't know. I don't dislike the mood, but neither am I moved by anything here one way or another. Using the word "shadow" feels appropriate. Sometimes shadows can be creepy, but then you realize they're just shadows and you're like why did I have an emotional response to that at all? It's a shadow. Now... imagine that shadow had a laptop and synth. Boom. Truthfully, I liked the Justice album better although the site also conspired to keep me away from reviewing it. Damn you Brexit!!!
"What does your soul look like?"
9th September 2022 Listened during the day while working from home in response to the death of the queen. Went to Freddy’s flat in the afternoon before Fritha and James came to stay for the weekend. Not hugely memorable but good background music. Again, if you were in a field at 3am, amazing.
Hmmm. I enjoyed this more than expected, but apparently less than most folks. Still, really enjoyed the more chill, atmospheric bits. Then, other pieces of the sampling just sounded like a mishmash of whatever.
Op organ donor na meh
I don’t get the appeal of DJ “albums”. Maybe it’s generational.
this album is an interesting creation. i find dj shadow's process and the concept behind this album fascinating. using uncommon songs to combine together to create a wholly original hour of music... it's a unique approach to an album. overall, it was unremarkable to me. not bad, but it didn't do much for me.
Huh. I found this to be unremarkable. From an artistic standpoint, I'm intrigued by the idea of taking nothing but samples and using it to create something new, but in the case of this album, and maybe the entire genre, the final product just isn't my thing.
There’s just something about this that rubs me the wrong way
Midnight In a Perfect World merece um remake
Forgettable in a good way. Great background music for when you need to pay attention to other things.
Quickly gets boring
Its interesting from a music history standpoint of course, but I just finished it and couldn't tell you a thing about it
After reading about this album, I think there might be something being "lost in translation"...it seems like this was new concept of using mostly sampling in music. While that is definitely a cool idea, when it just boils down to the listening of this album, for me it leaves a lot to be desired and just was boring
It was fine. I didn't realize when it was over so it wasn't exciting enough to keep my attention.
6/10 for studying just beats
I can understand why this is here, but it doesn't do much for me. I would actually be willing to give it another chance down the road.
Reminded me slightly of Shaft, more background music for me than anything else
It was an ok album. Heavy drum and bass beats comprise most of the album with some experimental stuff going on as well. It showed that a good beat is better accompanied by a good lyricist. 4.0/10
Listened to this for the first time yesterday, and didn't get it. Saw all the love it was getting on here, so listened to it again this morning, and... still don't get it. It's clearly cleverly put together, but the resulting sound isn't one that particularly appeals to me. 2/5.
05/18/22
I've enjoyed some collabs the artist has done, but I wasn't a big fan of this one. It's just a bit repetitive and lacking in ideas
Better than I was expecting, but I was expecting little. I just don't like sound of a needle scratch. Interesting to hear the ways songs are constructed but didn't float my boat.
I get why this album is highly regarded. I just find the pace too slow and end up bored every time I listen to it.
Not enough variation in the tracks to draw your attention
Interesting background album, but nothing really stood out to me. It seemed really long.
It's an interesting idea that this album is made entirely from samples and I appreciate the production expertise is requires to do that, but in the end I just don't care.
2/5 not quite...
just not my genre
At the time friends were all over this. Me, not really. Quite good breakbeats. I can see it's technically clever cut and paste sampling, but not my thing.
Never heard of DJ Shadow and didn't recognize one song on the album. Not terrible. Repetitive overall. That said, I have added it to to my "study and writing" playlist. 2.5
Culte mais bon.. Chiant The number song Organ Donnor
Pretty good
Pretty good
Solid but mostly samey/not my vibe
First listen. Better than expected. Definitely good background music. 2/5
Would have been great with lyrics. Found the drum and bass only kind of boring, but good for what it was.
Ganske digg og chill stemning her.
Midnight In a Perfect World is probably the best song on the album. Like a rock/rap remix kind of instrumental album. Was alright, nothing crazy. 5/10.
Too experimental and old school for me
It was gibberish. Not uncomfortable to listen to, and I get that he revolutionized hip hop and all, but I couldn't make it out.
Scratch scratch… scratch music
The first album made entirely of samples. I like it when an artist uses samples effectively and then elevates the material. There's no elevation here. Everything is mixed nicely enough, but after listening to this for over an hour, I'm not sure why I'm supposed to give it any more attention. Best track: Midnight In A Perfect World
way too long and didn’t hold my attention
Meh. Not for me
Turntableism is his speciality apparently. There you go.
Paso mucho de este rollo
Like a slightly more sophisticated version of me in secondary school music mashing buttons on the keyboard with the sound fx setting on. This was fucking awful.
Machine-based "sounds of an era" age particularly poorly. There is a business built around music. Innovative sounds are quickly and widely aped by less imaginative and more cynical people. The sounds grow tiresome. (This list, with its questionable curation, demonstrates the phenomenon particularly well for 60s folk, psychedelica, English blues...) But when you turn all of the performances over to machines, your sonic product lacks expressivity; all you have to offer is "a sound." When the aping is only a matter of buying and programming the same machines, the washout comes quicker and is more thorough. Aging recordings that have no human expressivity offer only bits of nostalgia for the few people who were at an impressionable age when they were released. Kids born after 2000 can listen to Revolver and be moved by the beauty of the performances. This, no matter how cool it sounded at the time, plays like the soundtrack to an old movie that no one wants to see.
A bunch of bullshit
An hour of DJ music is a lot of time to spend on 808s and snippets of albums. This is what you listen to when you're too high to dance, talk or listen to lyrics. RJD2 heard this album and decided what to do with his life. It's fine as background music. Stem/Long Stem - Medley is like a 1996 Tubular Bells...could very easily be the theme music for an Exorcist sequel. It's also like some one watched Blade Runner and rescored the Vangelis. Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain - Medley is the best song on the album.
Pointless
Since I Left You by The Avalanches is an all time favorite album, so am not against entire albums of sampling. Listened to this a few times over the years, and there's just nothing that connects for me on this album.
Inspirational dance hip hop album
You know it’s a bad album when the better songs sound like glorified elevator music
It was not very good techno music
I couldn't wait for this to be over. Its not bad or obnoxious, but I wasn't excited for it, was bored during it, and just waiting for it to end. That said I did hear a lot of familiar sounds within it.
Incredibly repetitive, boring
Ik word er niet vrolijk van
Blugh

the worst dogshit i've ever listened. 0/10
I dont do music without lyrics, I know I know its low iq but that shit is boring fuck moozart or wtv
#009 I heard the name and that critics were very positive. But as I am totally not interested in DJ stuff I I don’t consider as music but as a cut and paste exercise which might also be considered as art but not sure if I call that real music. I could also not listen to this in one go. It bored me although sometimes some interesting musical patterns were observed, but at the same time realizing that it was not created by the artist but only found and copied and pasted onto the collage. Which might be a craft on its own but does not fit in my definition of making music. Also as there is no additional lyrics on top of it (like e.g Beastie Boys Paul’s Boutique

Esto encontré: The culmination of these audio clips gives the album an unsettling, dream-like finish that perfectly encapsulates the mood of Lynch's universe.
Wow, what a terrible album! According to Wikipedia, DJ Shadow’s debut album *Endtroducing...* is “composed” of vinyl samples, which in itself is enough to warrant the worst possible rating. But DJ Shadow takes it even further, randomly splicing together random snippets and, despite the electronic beats, failing to maintain even a basic sense of rhythmic consistency. Nevertheless, the production doesn’t give the impression that any of this is accidental—so he clearly intended this result. I’m at a loss for words to write anything meaningful here—this is by far the worst of the 300 albums so far. OMG, so bad...
Unbearable this album is FUCKING NOISE POLLUTION FOR THIS TO BE IN THE “1001 albums you must hear before you die” this album is the album that is gonna kill you with how bad it is and no offense to anyone who likes it though.

7/10 3. The Number Song: Sigue siendo mas instrumental, esta no tuvo tanto flow, me parecio mas ruido que otra cosa. 2/10 4. 5/10 5. Transmission 1: interludio, sin mucho q decir 6. What does your soul look like Pt4: vuelve a tener un poco más the flow. 6/10 7. Untitled: otro interludio 8. 2/10
I hated this album. Couldn’t even finish it. I’m sure it is groundbreaking and deserves to be on this list for some reason but it’s not for me.
wasn't the biggest fan of this. Need to give it another listen to be honest.
Meh
Awful 1
God this one just sucks Lazy, boring, sounds like shit, too long, repetitive: there’s so many things I dislike about this one. When listening to hip hop I usually derive most of my enjoyment from lyrics, and the beat is a bonus if it sounds good, and somehow this one has neither. I might be able to stomach instrumental hip hop if the beats sounded even decent. It’s so frustrating because you’ll get like a quick sample that actually sounds good and then they completely undo it with a godawful 10 second segment. I don’t care if it’s artsy or whatever but I just think the whole concept of an album solely made up of samples is an awful idea. I think the worst part about this one for me is that it’s not even bad in a funny way like Rock Bottom or Faust, it’s just boring and uninspired. Only the second album I’ve given a 1 to, so pretty uniquely bad. Thank god I never have to listen to this garbage ever again
Basically a podcast
Really just wasn’t for me unfortunately
If you give a 100 monkeys 2 turntables and a microphone…
Listening to this album reminded me of being on hold with the IRS or some other government agency for 60 minutes. I know this came out in the '90s but this is elevator music for the 21st century. If I wanted to hear something that droned on and on endlessly without saying anything of substance, I would invite one of my ex-girlfriends over for dinner.
I liked some of this recording. I suppose it was innovative at the time.

Some bits ok mr garage band
ik ben geen fan - sorry
I couldn’t even finish this. My boyfriend thought his stereo was taking a crap with the amount of sound effects. Terrible.
I would rate this a minus one if I could
just not my thing...
I can imagine what came after and the influences this album created and it was just uncomfortable noise. I couldn't even make it through the entire thing. ;-;

DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing.....", an album I struggled to connect with on any level. I found it to be a monotonous and tiresome listen that felt more like a chore than a pleasure. By the fourth track, the experience became a test of endurance, and I found myself just waiting for it to end. I found it to be a long and difficult listen. One star. 1 "Best Foot Forward" (3/5) 2 "Building Steam with a Grain of Salt" (2/5) 3 "The Number Song" (1/5) 4 "Changeling" (1/5) 5 "Transmission 1" (1/5) 6 "What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4)" (1/5) 7 "Untitled" (1/5) 8 "Stem/Long Stem" (1/5) 9 "Transmission 2" (1/5) 10 "Mutual Slump" (1/5) 11 "Organ Donor" (1/5) 12 "Why Hip Hop Sucks in '96" (1/5) 13 "Midnight in a Perfect World" (2/5) 14 "Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain" (1/5) 15 "What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1 – Blue Sky Revisit)" (1/5) 16 "Transmission 3" (1/5) Total - 20 Average - 1.25 113/1001 60/113 albums reviewed were new to me.
Noise
Pretty dry and boring. Each song resuses a lot of the same beats, sounds, loops, etc. Maybe in its time it was experimental and risky, but in the present day it's very safe and overdone. 3/10
Album was okay but I wouldn’t buy it. Not my normal genre of music

This is someone playing someone else and calling it thier own
Never heard of this group. A lot of interesting sound effects, several times it sounded like a CD sounded when it was skipping. I’m glad I was listening to this while working so I didn’t totally waste an hour of my life listening to this.
Yay another album of 5 second loops that go on for 7 minutes straight. A couple of the tracks would be cool if somebody rapped a verse over them or something.
This is for someone... not for me.
0’5
Not my usual type of listen but I can see why people would like it. It is a really cool concept for an album with the use of samples and beats Highlights: - What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 1 (Blue Sky Revisit) - Mutual Slump - Changeling
The Good: It’s a clear end… The Bad: yet we were still troduced to it… The Ugly: fill in the blanks I’ve waited over a week to rate this album… why? Because slowly but surely my patience is being tested too much…. I think that I have been forced to listen to over 10 albums that were released since the late ‘90s, and we all know that hardly anything good was released since the introduction of 1 too many electronic/rap/numetal/pop crap So here’s to me finding out just now that yesterday’s album is Sign ‘O the Times, and that is going to be an easy 5* for me… This album, is a skip 1* Sorry DJ Shadow
was djaing a little too much for me
I only like this in the context of background noise for when I’m working. Otherwise what is this? Not for me.
.not for me
It’s pretty ok
The fuck is this shit
I don't really understand what this is. Is it just stuff for other people to rap over? Because this was boring as hell on its own. I don't need this in my life.
Booooring
Not my cup of tea
No, sorry, just no, this is a boring boring album, made almost entirely of samples, not into it
Really? This is one of the 1001 records I NEED to listen to before I die? Didn’t finish.
I’m sure Mr. Shadow is a nice fellow but this was just repetitive nonsense.
three songs in, i am quite bored. Skipping this now.
nothing wowing
Mostly drum fill instrumentals which are fun with some record scratching and hip hop remix elements. You could listen to this while walking through a park or city any time. Losing interest through the album as there are repetitive and tedious parts. The sense of humor in the first few tracks falls off as it goes on. Upon 2nd listen to some of these tracks it's actually pretty low effort and crappy.
Not even forgettable as I barely noticed it was playing in the first place.
I did not like the beginning, but the middle didn't seem too bad. Then toward the end it got really old and I felt like I was in a trance. I just don't get it.
Horrible
I can't think of anyone I would ever recommend this to. I feel like whatever this is had already been done way better prior to 1996 and way better after 1996. Wikipedia says a lot of the techniques used were groundbreaking and still used today, but sampling was used prior to this so I don't get it. Doesn't feel like it was very groundbreaking. Ambient filler music that you probably need to be stoned for. Fun fact - was not stoned for this. Did not enjoy.
This album felt like chore to get through
Hated it
im half way through, guys i'll be real i dont know if i can finish this. like it sounds fine but its just long as hell. okay right i skipped the last three because its 1am i am tired, i have a headache, i am done. yeah soz, not for me, that album is being forgotten forever
Started out interesting, got extremely repetitive. Two hours is way too long ...
Not my taste
It's fine. Nothing I need to listen to again.
Tuned this out and by the time I came back to it, was 11 tracks in. Couldn't remember a single thing.
A frustrating and tedious listen. It's aptly titled in that each track feels like an introduction building to something more engaging, but the rug is pulled every time as the proceeding track is another haunted house themed slog. There are some soundtrack worthy beats.
Hate it
Just not for me. I can definitely appreciate the artistry of certain moments and some of it’s pretty vibey, but overall I found it dull and ended up fast-forwarding through a number of tracks. (1.5 stars)
I'll repeat No electronic instrumental album should be near any top list. Only song worth listeningwas organ donor. Good song
While the idea of building an entire album out of samples is interesting, none of these songs struck me as meaningful or unique
This is for someone... drummers maybe... not for me.
Well that was disappointing! For some reason I thought I might like it, but no, and I can’t find any redeeming features!
Not something I listen to.
Rubbish!!!
Honestly hate to do it. I understand Shadows influence as I have friends who love his albums, but I just can't do two hours of beats. Just not my cup of tea.
Nope
Terrible. 1/5
Even though my BIRDS just won the super bowl over the Chiefs, I am still giving this one star. Just wasn't interested
Album - Entroducing… Artist - DJ Shadow Release - 1996 Genre - Instrumental Hip Hop/Trip Hop/Plunderphonics/Sampledelia Heard it before? - N Nothing has ever defined “not my scene” for me more than this album. It was made by and for sample nerds. It’s a bunch of cut and pasted samples strewn together by quality drumbeats. While I can understand the appeal and artistry of music like this, it just doesn’t work for me. I’m not even sure it would work if I was a dedicated hip hop fan. Isn’t half the appeal of the genre the rapping? 2/10
Wasn’t enjoyable, almost annoying.
Day395 - first and last time i will voluntarily listen to this
kacke, hat mir so gar nicht gefallen
Too long and didn't do a lot.
Crap
I had serious problems trying to listen to the songs till the end. I felt the necessity to cut them short. They felt increasingly oppressing. Maybe that was the point, but I cannot see myself wanting to experience it. 2/10
Not my style at all. Didn't finish.
Eh, it's a whole album of instrumental music. I can appreciate the influence it had on hip hop, I can even hear the undertones of music I absolutely love. But the album itself just didn't grab me. Best song: Organ Donor
Reading up on Entroducing I was intrigued but what I was about to listen to. Using samples to create essentially an entire album seemed like a a great concept. Unfortunately, I like the idea of this album a lot more than the execution. It's mostly just a mish mash of random sounds with no staying power. There are a couple of decent segments but nothing that will have any lasting effect beyond this listen. I think the lack of any true vocals hurt this album as there is not much to listen and relate to for an hour. Endtroducing was a pretty big miss for me. 1.46 stars
Where’s the 0 star ? Seriously the worst thing I’ve ever listened too
Terribly dull album. Whole lot of nothing going on with it.

That's the first DJ album that I've seen in here and I really expected some (at least) decent performance. Unfortunately, it is another one of those albums where you have to be on drugs to actually enjoy it. It was definitely too much and definitely less than meh.
Honestly the worst
Move the needle? No. Major insult for a Deej Of his calibre. This album was genuinely awful. The samples seem to lack direction, and impact. The beats, banal. Entirely unremarkable. Doofi on Reddit were recently wanking about it too.
sucks
An actual shadow could probably make a better album
oh god this is really bad.... LMAO
?? What is it ??
Zzzzz....huh? What? Oh yea this stupid sample shit. Hard no.
Boring background music
Not for me
Mist!
Thank goodness there is traffic on the road next to me so I can concentrate on other sounds. I appreciate that music is taste. This is not mine.
Who's idea was it to include this album?
Okay this album kinda sucked. The concept is cool, and I can appreciate the uniqueness of the production, but the beats were generally just okay, and the whole album sound unfinished. No lyrics, plus most of the songs just being okay, plus some of the experimental stuff just didn’t sound good to me. Plus the album was way too long
5/1001
Nicht meins. Vertane Zeit!
STANDOUTS: n/a OVERALL: 1/5; NOT for me.
Eh, not my thing really. Definitely not a must listen
Wasn’t over fast enough
Ugh, hip hop and electronica, two of my least favorite genres. It seemed to take forever for a song to get going and once it did, it didn't go anywhere. Most relatable song, "Why hip hop sucks in 96" except I would remove "in 96" to make it more accurate.
Was soll i damit?
Disgusting and repulsive.
Very repetitive
the sounds aren't bad and can work as background noise, but not much is memorable and the songs are way too long
Sprry man - Not my music
Not at all my style. I tried to find something redeeming, but couldn't. I can't really imagine it on a "must hear" list unless it's something to do with the instruments or playing or something else that I simply don't understand. If I could give less than 1 star, I would.
Gefällt mir nicht.
Incoherent clutter.
uff bastante pesado de escuchar. No es mi estilo.

No thanks, I’ll take DJ Premier
Monotonous uninspiring rubbish. Like I’d expect to hear in a wanky London restaurant or hotel lobby.
If you can sample a song and add to it to create something transcendent, you are an artist. If you create something dull and mediocre, throw it on the pile with this album.
Hip-hop/Rap... not my cup of tea.
Nope - uninteresting, same old same old.
Not good
Just absolutely horrible.
Did not care for this in anyway. Couldn't finish a song.
I wanted to like this, but I really didn't. It didn't pass the headache test. I was very glad when it was over.
Too much investment in time until you find small moments of enjoyment... It's hard for me to understand that this is an excellent LP. Maybe I lack snobbery...
Very EDM-ish, not my style
Banal, talentless, drivel, as bad as it gets, and those are compliments, its actually a thousand times worse. Not sure who gets suckered in to buying this redundant filth, they really do need to check in for help. Would give it minus stars, it is just awful.
I don't get it!
This one wasn’t really for me. It’s pretty good if I just want background music when I work or do other things, but I can’t say it that it touched me in any deeper way. There are many other electronic albums that, to me, are way better - even as background music! Maybe it’s an interesting work from a technical standpoint, but that’s about it for me. I didn’t find it exciting or meaningful. Next!
Not a fan. The beat was very basic, and a lot of it all sounded alike.
I'm checking the book out from the library to try and figure out why this album is on the list. I get that it was unique by only using tracksvalready recorded, but it was painful to listen to at times. Did he use a sound effects album on this?
Boring ...
This reminds me of that time my little brother got an electric piano for his birthday, which had a setting that made each key sound like a different shitty drum sample, and that's all he did the whole day
Pas fan
I feel bad but I couldn’t get into this at all. Like not even slightly. Maybe back when I was into stuff like Girl Talk I would’ve been able to appreciate the technical aspect of the sampling and everything like that, but trying a few times over the weekend I couldn’t get interested in it at all. I’m sorry, I really did give it a shot.

Started listening, probably need to give it another shot but not fully my cup of tea.
This album deserves samples of a bunch of my other reviews - expertly put together! I don't get it. I don't get it. I don't get it. Sometimes sounds obnoxious... most of the time simply not my taste. But then gets real boring real fast. boring real fast fast fast fast fast All in all subpar. Yes, that's it. Gives me nothing. The only question that remains is The only question that remains is The only question that remains is why?
Would not buy
didnt give it a fair shot because i wasn't really keen on instrumental only music at the time of its suggestion
Would gladly drink lava instead of listening to this shower of shit again
Mostly instrumental and repetitive. No bangers.
Blja
I did work to this album and forgot it was on for most of the time it played.
it is not the type of music that I listen to, therefore, I did not enjoy it
Boring. Scratchy dj sounds. Can't get into the background of his songs.
Did I get locked after hours in a 1995 Tower Records?
Not a rap fan
- nah I am not vibing with this - boring, samples are meh - might be my first 1 star
I’ve never heard of DJ Shadow before. If I’m being honest, that name alone would usually put me off for sounding so cringey. Nevertheless, today I’ll be listening to this and seeing what I think of it. I hope it’s better than the name suggests. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: The Number Song They say not to judge a book by its cover, but in this case I feel like I judged well. This music is really not for me. I didn’t mind The Number Song, but otherwise it all sort of mushed into one thing which all sounded basically the same. It wasn’t dynamic enough to hold my attention, but I did keep it on and make it to the end. There’s not much more to say on this. It’s just not for me.
I guess this means something, I guess it did something at the time. But it's just a series of samples and a drum beat that you could throw together in 5 minutes in Logic Pro now. I don't know why anyone would want to listen to this ever again.
Sorry, this sounds like someone who got decks for Christmas and was working out how to annoy everyone. Not my thing - maybe I’m missing something, though whatever it is I can live without, thank you.
Not my kind of music!
Repetitive
Not my kind of music 3/10 probably won’t look into again
I don't like this creation, sorry.
Wasn’t really my kind of listen. My pallet isn’t quite up to what was on this album but it was definitely different
No.
I go into this biased: I hate edm and techno. It's like nails on the chalkboard to me. With that being said I went into this with an open mind. Maybe since it was on this list it may change my mind. God knows my son would love that. Within 5 minutes I was wondering if i could convince a deity to send someone with a hot soldering iron to jam into my ear to end the pain. After about twenty minutes or so (Felt like an eternity), the song (can you really call them that though? ) what does your soul look like came on. This was the only reprieve on the entire album. This is the one track that if I was stuck on an elevator listening too I wouldn't end it all. After that one track it was back to pondering whether a rusty screwdriver to the ear would end the pain. I listened to it all, I will never willing do it again, even though most of these albums I listen to twice in case is something that might grow on me.
For the title this gets a 1
Probably a little harsh but I wasn't in to it today.
Nope
Drum fills with some diffferent record samples playing.
Wasn't a fan.
Could not listen to it all. Never heard of this album before and will never remember it after.
Incredibly unimaginative.
This was really boring. I was definitely not a fan.
Ok, not gonna lie....I didn't listen to all of this. By the second song I wanted to shove an ice pick in my ear. Fucking terrible.
Es solo una batería haciendo PUM PURRRUPUM PUM PUM
Hip-Hop-Instrumentals with little to no vocals (sadly)
It was refreshing, but it's dark! Not a listen for the night.
