Mad respect for the work that went into it an the obvious influences the work had, but I just didn't like listening to it

Boring

I’m so tired of this electronic music. This is better than some, but it’s all the same to me. I’m not impressed at all. It’s like a freckle. It’s just there and doesn’t do anything for me.

My issue with sampling in music is the same as with collage in visual art. Give it enough attention and the mind will draw connections - maybe even assign meaning to the whole. Done right, it can be a revelation. . .but it's rarely done right. There are lots of imitators, but few innovators. Music is entertainment. I don't want to work at it and find my own meaning, simply because *it's just not that important*. That will, of course, influence my rating. Students of music will disagree. Like most hip-hop, I have no patience with it. This one was at least not aurally offensive.

I'm not super familiar with the dance/electronic genre. I had a mixed experience with this. Some tracks I wasn't not a fan of, others I was indifferent to, but often found them fading into the background. Overall I would say a well produced album that just isn't my cup of tea.

Atmospheric and good background music, but ultimately not super interesting. Clearly, he’s a talented DJ, but a full album of just DJ is tough the sell.

This was a tough slog. Drum beats gave it some life but still went DOA.

I understand why it's on the list, so that's something. Might be the only thing. I didn't hate any of the songs but I didn't particularly enjoy them either, I was mostly just waiting for it to be over. Favourite song: Mutual Slump Least: Napalm Brain/ Scatter Brain

Another that I'm glad to have listened to, but not disappointed when it eventually finished. I got Odelay the other day, and occasionally this is like that but without the songs. I didn't hate it, but I didn't much enjoy it. Listened to the Bjork song it sampled afterwards, that was good.

This is a collection of proto-hip hop tracks. No lyrics, just vibes. If you're into free styling, this is a good record to have. It's a pleasant listen but 'Midnight In A Perfect World' really stands out. It's a trip hop type joint, with a melancholic tinge that only comes at night. The rest is fine but this one track is worth listening to, and maybe downloading on your streaming app.

Strange, sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a very not good way. Not much of a hip-hop fan.

A bit all over the places. Tracks seemed to jump about, with no connection to one another, or anything helping the whole thing flow or fit together. Some individual tracks weren't terrible, but the album as a whole wasn't great.

If I was running a fusion restaurant with cool vibes in NYC, or trying to have something on in the background while I chill with friends, this would be a good option. If I'm largely sitting and listening to it, this thing goes on and on and on. Fun use of the medium, good DJ, but you could cut it in half and have the same album.

hard to pin down just what genre this album is, so it's an interesting listen for that reason. dj shadow also does a good job at showing off his versatility; there are lots of songs on here that sound different, yet still some sonic consistency across the project. but i kind of struggle to see the vision and aim of this album, and i feel like dj shadow didnt have much of clue either. hmmm

This is some nonsense that a college guy living in an on-campus apartment would put on in the background while trying to make a move on you. It's not bad but it's just empty and soulless.

First of all, it's not my cup of tea, but I understand the artistic involvement in the album. Most of the album is based on hip-hop and trip-hop percussions over the samples, which takes me out a lot. It feels at times very noisy and uninteresting. "Stem / Long Stem / Transmission 2" was the first song to really catch me, which I enjoyed more. I wouldn't give this album more than a 4, so that is why I give this one two stars.

I'm not sure that I quite get this one. It's really good DJ'ing to be sure, but when does it go from being a beat over a bunch of other people's work to something original? I think if it had vocals over it I would be more into it. Just listening to a DJ mix isn't doing it for me today. Maybe on another day it would? I don't know. That ambiguous feeling is what makes me have vague feelings (tending towards negative) about this. That said, from the perspective of what music is used for as an art form, this is great, and would be awesome backing music. Especially in a movie or TV show.

Off the cuff remark: No doubt great skills in all that sampling, but it mostly just flows over me without registering Standout Track: What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt 4, though it doesn't exactly standout Revisit?: Welll. I wouldn't mind but don't think I will honestly make the effort.

Listened to this while I was making breakfast, and I was just vibin’. Finished making breakfast to realize I still had a half hour longer to go and gave up for a while. Came back to it later in the day, and I barely made it through the album.

I don't know if I just didn't understand the concept for this album, but it honestly just sounded like noise to me. There are a few too many annoying, prominent sounds playing repetitively in this album amongst music that actually doesn't sound too bad. In fact, the music was really pleasant and interesting at times. That makes these sounds so jarring, and it really ruins the vibe that I just find myself getting into. There's a lot of spoken word used throughout this album, which isn't a bad thing but it is definitely not something I prefer. The good news about this album, is it did get better as it went along and wasn't bad background music for my tasks. Would I listen to it just because? No.

The mix of influences (electronic, rap, hip hop, jazz) is sometimes of good quality but there are many loops and some melodies which are nice but they are immediately stopped/hashed... The album is a concept that I did not appreciate.

It was an easy listen but as a full instrumental album it isn't for me. I had a DJ background which surprised me too but wasn't interested by it. It's more like 2.5 stars so I'll keep it at 2.

certainly unique, reminds me of aphex twin. i can’t tell if i enjoy it or if i’m forcing myself to enjoy it? there are no vocals for me to indulge in… and i could see WHY someone would enjoy it, its like background noise, but the glitching stuff is so jarring. i did enjoy stem/long stem, very hallucinogenic - i’ll be honest tho all the like 6 minute songs i skipped 3/4 into it lol

Nevertheless I do like Building Steam With A Grain of Salt and I do like Transmission 2. Other than those two everything seems to kinda blend together. Not sure what else to say. This album is a remarkable creative work, but it was not groundbreaking. Electronic music production is so dependent on the available technology, and this sounds dated at this point. It makes for ok background music.

As someone who is not super into this genre, I thought it was funky and had a much more hip-hop feel than an electronica feel. Like it better than most in this area.

Overall: 4/10 This one was promising based on the first song but everything was so boring and repetitive that it elicited zero emotions from me. I can see why some may enjoy it but I need more variety. If he had some guest artists to rap over these beats then I may enjoy it but the instrumentals just weren't enough. Never really had much time for this type of music and thought that this would be an opportunity to revise my opinions. Alas I was reminded of all the things I disliked, the unsettling loud outbursts and disjointed melodies. This really isn't my cup of tea. 2 stars for the method of compiling these samples.

So this is just a style of music I don't like. It's probably very well done, but I just don't care about or for it.

I did like some bits, but the weird rythms and the sort of unsatisfying tone of loops that go nowhere is not something I'd sit and listen to. I assume this is here due to some sort of musical value that I don't fully understand.

When I read the description of this being instrumental hip-hop from vinyl samples I was pretty psyched. Unfortunately I was expecting something funky and this was not that. This is very percussive/drum heavy. I was hoping for some dirty bass lines. I need more melody!!

I liked the early stuff better than the later stuff on this album. The beginning felt more unique and different in the techno realm but as it went on it really started to feel much more run of the mill techno. Gotta be honest I was a little surprised this was a white guy. Wikipedia says he "revolutionized hip hop" and his "work involves manipulating samples, taking rare and seldom-heard pieces of music and reworking them into parts and phrases for his songs." Is this album just included so that we could cut out 101 other albums from the list? And who are those artists that were cut out, what messages did we miss from their music so it could be sampled and repackaged into a potentially more palatable commercially appealing album? What credit financially and professionally did those artists receive? What overall message did we miss by only sampling their music?

What does my soul look like? He asked twice so I guess it's worth an answer. My soul looks like me only taller and more disheveled. I don't really know enough about DJ music to appreciate why this album was influential. I liked that it was some bass heavy grooves but after about 10 minutes I was bored with it and generally felt the album was too long. Things I'm looking for in these albums: instrumentation, creative songwriting, and unique voice/poetry. This album is lacking in these. For DJ music I think I like more upbeat dance music. This is just a lot of lukewarm languid beats.

This is a highly influential album but it mostly falls flat for me. Much of this sounds claustrophobic. Just a lot of going nowhere. I did hear a Bjork sample and an Underworld sample which sent me on over to their FAR superior albums.

I'm a bit confused by this. I mean it's an album that is made up of electronic drum beats and samples of everyone from Tangerine Dream to Bjork to Metallica. I mean I guess it's kind of cool to get samples from such different artists to fit together in something that could be described as vaguely musical? It's kind of vibey I guess. Interesting I suppose. But as far as something that needed to be heard, I don't know. I mean I don't feel like I really needed to hear an entire album of repetitive samples and fake drums. Like, maybe just a few minutes while reading about how it was produced would be enough? It's ok. I guess. But maybe write your own songs next time? Was definitely ready to move on after about 15 minutes. 2/5

I respect the tenacity of DJ Shadow to produce this album almost exclusively from vinyl samples. I love hip hop sampling and how it takes the best parts of songs and highlights them, the cream at the top. However, as a collective this album doesn’t inspire me. It’s pleasant enough, but I need more from an album. …maybe I just miss the rapping.

I guess I just don’t get it.

Instrumental is not really my thing. There were times that I found myself vibing along but there were also times that I was getting tired of a particular loop or sample before the song developed something else. I enjoyed it in the beginning couple tracks but by the end I just wanted something more.

Decent lofi beats and melodies. Very contemporary sounding which is nice. But the tracks drone on for way too long - if each track was maybe 2-3 mins instead of 6+ this album would be a lot better. The interludes are also largely uninteresting and slightly jarring. Top tracks: What Doea Your Soul Look Like Pt. 1 & Pt. 4

Great idea. Instrumentally smooth considering the cutting and mixing. Would prefer there to be more extended blending of lyrical samples. Became too introspective on some tracks and although I could hear his passion, it left me a bit cold.

Wow - did this go on forever? It seemed like it lasted for days! I only warmed up to it in the last 3 or 4 tracks and am glad it’s over.

I don't know what to do with this. Is the entire thing just other people's work mixed together by some guy with DJ equipment? I guess it doesn't much matter. It gave me a headache.

I have impression that whole album is just 2 songs playing one after one...

The level of content-creation from this format is impressive but minus the effort, it's not really an amazing listen. That said, I do understand why it's on the 1001 list. Shadow creates some nice soundscapes but overall it's a little low-key for me, it's like the jazz form of hip-hop in a way. I prefer to be sonically boomed by cut-sample mixes (like Girl Talk for one) and this album felt more like background music. It faded away by the end so 2.0.

Way too dancy/electronic for me

While I confess that this kind of music is not my normal listening fare, I really appreciate when someone can rip and mix samples and beats and make something creative and new. Unfortunately, for me, this album was not that. I felt like each track let only a handful of short samples dominate in an endless loop that eventually fades into noise more than makes music. There were not enough layers, transitions, weaving together samples to create something melodic that hooks in this collection for my tastes. Instead, it was just a nice collection of sounds that overstayed their welcome.

This album is entirely made up of "samples" from the work of musical artists layered and arranged as new music, which is an artistic and technical accomplishment in itself, but is it worth a listen and would I ever want to hear it again? Yes to the first and a firm no to the second. There are interesting segments and some melodic spots, but a lot is also mind-numbingly repetitive. For me, a hard no.

Overproduced, too many samples

I know people call this album groundbreaking, but honestly, I just found it boring. Most of the tracks drag on way too long, looping the same ideas until they wear out their welcome. There’s barely any energy, and it all starts to blur together after a while. For all the hype about creativity and innovation, I was left waiting for something to actually catch my ear. It feels more like background music for a hip coffee shop than something I’d ever want to play again. If this is supposed to be a masterpiece, I’m missing the point.

Hard to rank this one! Songs were interesting but some were just clanky noise.

For my birthday I was hoping 1001 was going to pick an album that I already think is an undeniable classic, a staple in my music catalogue. Not the case here. Background music that's somehow made worse by working with it on in the background. It makes me feel like I'm in a corporate job circa Y2K. It doesn't make me feel nice. Certainly doesn't make me feel like it's my birthday :(

"Midnight in a Perfect World" is the best song on the album for me and has that nineties vibe that takes me back to my teenage days. The album was very close to three stars, but in the end it got two.

I'm guessing Untitled was meant as the end of side one of a cassette, but I wish it was a full track because I dug its sound. The standout track for me was Mutual Slump. The rest had good samples but were overall just okay.

It is a personal failing of mine that I struggle with most music that doesn't involve a vocalist, but even then I cannot shake the feeling that any one of these tracks would best be used as an introduction to a podcast about some niche topic.

Considering he was meant to have done this with limited equipment it's well put together. However it's boring after a while

Trip hop missing energy

ah something new for me = trip hop. I try let it do its work... interesting atmosphere created (but very quickly, I find this too reptitive and heavy, and in the end, tiring. Music WORKS because our brain knows what to expect next and they ignore this need. Result it feels like a box of music, not a progression. Units. Blocks of stuff that dont make a whole... so yeah moments of groove. but they need joining up to work on me. Exception: there is a build and progression or transition in "stem" only ... its an interlude. and by then I had lost interest. Essential its an experiment/concept album. interesting for some but not epic. There are signs of intelligence and willingness to seriously attempt something new - hence 2 stars, for the interest and mambience it set

Uninspiring, boring and too outdated even for 2005.

This is one of those albums that caused me to reflect on this whole experience of listening to the '1001 Albums to Listen to Before You Die'. I think many of us come in with various definitions of what that means. Is it best albums? Is it most influential? Is it about discovering different styles of music? Is it something more? Are we listening just to discover music (and is this truly the best way to do that)? And albums like this seem to show that this exercise almost by intention defies categorization - that it's impossible to say without context. Case in point - I truly don't know why Endtroducing... is on this list. It's fine, but it's not revelatory in the way other albums on this list are. Exit Planet Dust by the Chemical Brothers came out a year before and, for me, is an objectively better album by a large margin. Maybe DJ Shadow's style and what he brings to the genre was influential and so deserves an album on the list? Certainly I've heard the name and know of him. But then why is it this one and not a different album? And truly, without the book or without the context from the person who put this album on the list it's almost impossible to say for this or really ANY album that I'm not immediately drawn to. I've certainly heard albums that make me go 'of course this is here' or 'I can understand why this is here', but I've also heard many that made me go 'I don't know what makes this special', and I think there is a missing connective tissue that maybe the book covers, but maybe it doesn't. Hell, for some of these albums, the Wikipedia entry only states that it's special BECAUSE IT WAS INCLUDED ON THIS LIST!!! This exercise also makes me reflect on just how many artists I love and albums I feel are much better than what's been provided that aren't reflected here. Just in electronica, there is Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Pretty Lights, and more that, sure, may have been influenced by DJ Shadow, but as a result have produced more interesting and compelling music and also may have been influenced by a hundred other artists. But then how do others discover them if they aren't reflected on lists like these because room has to be made for what came before, when all music is almost universally referential to what came before? You have to start somewhere of course, but you also have to pick and choose to an extent and, to make this exercise truly valuable, justify those choices. If you can include a Best of album for one artist, why can't you for another? All to say, it's a fascinating but flawed experiment and has made me think much more deeply about how I find and discover music - both in taking risks and listening to things I wouldn't otherwise, but also the value in listening to an entire album the whole way through. And of course in questioning the lists in and of themselves and recognizing that any list is going to be highly biased and can never wholly encompass what is good and what will resonate most with you.

A better album than I expected (based on what I read about it). Most of this album was incredibly groovy, laid-back, relaxing, and an easy-going experience. A couple of tracks would have made excellent horror movie themes/soundtracks (e.g., Stem/Long Stem and Organ Donor). Not everything was great for me, but an overall enjoyable experience. Favorite tracks: Building Steam with a Grain of Salt, What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4), Stem/Long Stem / Transmission 2, Organ Donor, Midnight in a Perfect World.

Not a lot of experience with listening to full-length albums by DJs. I guess I view them as a completely separate category in music since they are creating a collage rather than strictly brand new material. But I guess the same could be argued for all music? It's all recycled, built on previous artists, using the same sounds and instruments... Anyways this guy was fine.

Not really my vibe, but some of the songs that slowed down and just leaned into a relaxed, smooth pace were enjoyable.

There's definitely a place in history for all music ideas. And this is no exception. A hour of mainly instrumental beats, scratches, and samples. It sounds pretty cool, to be honest. An hour of it though? Not sure I want to sit through something like that again. As background noise to something I am doing? Sure. That's probably more what this is geared towards any way. There are some familiar samples on here. Production wise, it sounds like every other Soundcloud DJ in the world. There isn't one thing on here that stands out that would make me think "hey, this is DJ Shadow!" on listen, I would never be able to pin point it. Unlike rock music. If I hear David Gilmour playing a solo, I know for sure that it's him. If I hear Danny Carey playing Drums, I know it's Danny Carey. Sure, I'm more versed in the latter genre, but I have heard a plethora of various DJ's in my life time... And if you don't have a "signature" - you blend in. That's my hot take. Was this album bad? Nope. But it was forgetable.

Weird mix. In one moment it's boring elevator music, then I got surprised with some great drum fills and a change of rhythm. Then it's jazzy, then hip-hop, then elevator music again. Sometimes just a sequence of unrelated samples. Technically not bad, but I am missing a central theme.

I really enjoyed it at first, it totally wasn't what I was expecting. Was some nice chill background music but then I found the really short tracks to be a bit jarring, made me want to not keep listening to it.

Isn't this supposed to be... danceable? I like the fact that he mixed a lot of hip hop beats to it, but it doesn't... groove at a decent pace. It's all at a middling tempo. The guy's genre is dance, and the music is not fast enough to dance to. It's more... shoegaze tempo. What's the fun in THAT?

Bit of an odd one. Pretty good quality. I can see this being a good album for when your life is in turmoil. More of an ambient album than something I would seek out.

He was good at duel on Gladiators

I wanted to like this more than I did (my hs bestie was obsessed with DJS), it just got too experimental and weird at some points and I didn't really enjoy listening to it. 2.5

Interesting sound. This definitely defined the genre for DJ sounds and sampling. I like to only listen this in background while doing something.

C'était sympa, mais j'ai pas tellement accroché.

I only know DJ Shadow through Nobody Speak by RTJ, which is such a good beat I was really excited for this. He's been around a long time! There were some good beats here and there but it was largely quite restrained, didn't have as much swagger as I expected. There were a few parts that even reminded me of tubular bells, why does everything sound like Mike Oldfield? Maybe with some rappers/singers this could have been better but as is I wasn't fussed.

This was not completely terrible but not my thing. Did not mind it was mostly instrumental some of the intro tracks were annoying if you were driving.

I really expected to not like this when I saw it based on the title and artist alone even though I had never heard of it. While I wasn't completely off, it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. As more of an instrumental hip hop album, I was surprised to find it more chill and interesting. It wasn't really my thing and I don't see myself returning to it, but I got through the entire thing without hating it or regretting trying. 2/5
