not for me

Just didn’t vibe with it and I like rap music

Meh, I was bored with the majority of this. Some of the drums were interesting. I kind of liked track 2.

I mean…sure…I guess. I can admire the thought process that goes into multi-level sampling, and all on a single device…but hard pressed to agree with its placement in this list.

Solid beats and bass lines but this genre is so repetitive for me. Sure could put it on the background during work and would be fine. But does that make a great album?

"Midnight in a Perfect World" is the best song on the album for me and has that nineties vibe that takes me back to my teenage days. The album was very close to three stars, but in the end it got two.

I'm guessing Untitled was meant as the end of side one of a cassette, but I wish it was a full track because I dug its sound. The standout track for me was Mutual Slump. The rest had good samples but were overall just okay.

mainly instruemntal

Varying moods and tempos is a great way to describe this listenable sometimes grooving otherwise forgettable album.

This is something I might listen to when reading.

#236. I don't care 2/5: meh

Elevator music. Well-crafted elevator music. Still. Elevator music.

It is a personal failing of mine that I struggle with most music that doesn't involve a vocalist, but even then I cannot shake the feeling that any one of these tracks would best be used as an introduction to a podcast about some niche topic.

Considering he was meant to have done this with limited equipment it's well put together. However it's boring after a while

I guess this genre is not for me. Skilled DJ but ultimately meh songs.

It’s cool that it’s all samples but it’s pretty boring. Nothing I would revisit.

Sounded interesting, but fairly disappointing and boring. I wanted to like it more.

Listened to once, never felt the need to go back.

This is a Mess.

Trip hop missing energy

Best listened to in a club. Otherwise forgettable.

ah something new for me = trip hop. I try let it do its work... interesting atmosphere created (but very quickly, I find this too reptitive and heavy, and in the end, tiring. Music WORKS because our brain knows what to expect next and they ignore this need. Result it feels like a box of music, not a progression. Units. Blocks of stuff that dont make a whole... so yeah moments of groove. but they need joining up to work on me. Exception: there is a build and progression or transition in "stem" only ... its an interlude. and by then I had lost interest. Essential its an experiment/concept album. interesting for some but not epic. There are signs of intelligence and willingness to seriously attempt something new - hence 2 stars, for the interest and mambience it set

not my kind of music

Leuke Giorgio moroder sample

Not so sure this sound has aged well.

Not my thing.

Mostly instrumental but still not what I like. 2 stars.

Well crafted sampling and some good beats. But this only works as background music for me.

Not impressed by this album.

Not keen on instrumentals, but was interesting concept

Uninspiring, boring and too outdated even for 2005.

This is one of those albums that caused me to reflect on this whole experience of listening to the '1001 Albums to Listen to Before You Die'. I think many of us come in with various definitions of what that means. Is it best albums? Is it most influential? Is it about discovering different styles of music? Is it something more? Are we listening just to discover music (and is this truly the best way to do that)? And albums like this seem to show that this exercise almost by intention defies categorization - that it's impossible to say without context. Case in point - I truly don't know why Endtroducing... is on this list. It's fine, but it's not revelatory in the way other albums on this list are. Exit Planet Dust by the Chemical Brothers came out a year before and, for me, is an objectively better album by a large margin. Maybe DJ Shadow's style and what he brings to the genre was influential and so deserves an album on the list? Certainly I've heard the name and know of him. But then why is it this one and not a different album? And truly, without the book or without the context from the person who put this album on the list it's almost impossible to say for this or really ANY album that I'm not immediately drawn to. I've certainly heard albums that make me go 'of course this is here' or 'I can understand why this is here', but I've also heard many that made me go 'I don't know what makes this special', and I think there is a missing connective tissue that maybe the book covers, but maybe it doesn't. Hell, for some of these albums, the Wikipedia entry only states that it's special BECAUSE IT WAS INCLUDED ON THIS LIST!!! This exercise also makes me reflect on just how many artists I love and albums I feel are much better than what's been provided that aren't reflected here. Just in electronica, there is Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Pretty Lights, and more that, sure, may have been influenced by DJ Shadow, but as a result have produced more interesting and compelling music and also may have been influenced by a hundred other artists. But then how do others discover them if they aren't reflected on lists like these because room has to be made for what came before, when all music is almost universally referential to what came before? You have to start somewhere of course, but you also have to pick and choose to an extent and, to make this exercise truly valuable, justify those choices. If you can include a Best of album for one artist, why can't you for another? All to say, it's a fascinating but flawed experiment and has made me think much more deeply about how I find and discover music - both in taking risks and listening to things I wouldn't otherwise, but also the value in listening to an entire album the whole way through. And of course in questioning the lists in and of themselves and recognizing that any list is going to be highly biased and can never wholly encompass what is good and what will resonate most with you.

What was that

Like it’s just samples? Interesting I guess but like …. not something I would choose to listen to again

I kept waiting for what was next. Like a song was set up nicely but then never went anywhere.

Good lo fi stufy music? I don’t like as much as nujabees or dilla I think The possibly maybe sample is annoying, worse than the actual song. Tbh this isn’t rly my thing. Actually this is good I think I like people who were influenced by it more

nein danke

A better album than I expected (based on what I read about it). Most of this album was incredibly groovy, laid-back, relaxing, and an easy-going experience. A couple of tracks would have made excellent horror movie themes/soundtracks (e.g., Stem/Long Stem and Organ Donor). Not everything was great for me, but an overall enjoyable experience. Favorite tracks: Building Steam with a Grain of Salt, What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4), Stem/Long Stem / Transmission 2, Organ Donor, Midnight in a Perfect World.

Wanted to like it but apart from Midnight in a Perfect world I was a bit underwhelmed. Loud beats. Some not v interesting dominates too much.

Made entirely from samples? Very good, very clever. Is it any good? Pleasant enough mood music when you are enjoying a nice ride.... in a lift. I'm being a bit disingenuous here. It wasn't too bad, just a tad bland. It doesn’t deserve a 1 as it wasnt crap, so low 2.

Not a lot of experience with listening to full-length albums by DJs. I guess I view them as a completely separate category in music since they are creating a collage rather than strictly brand new material. But I guess the same could be argued for all music? It's all recycled, built on previous artists, using the same sounds and instruments... Anyways this guy was fine.

Zeer vreemde nietszeggende tunes. Dit was m weer eens niet

Echt van die old skool hip hop. Redelijk experimenteel.

Not really my vibe, but some of the songs that slowed down and just leaned into a relaxed, smooth pace were enjoyable.

There's definitely a place in history for all music ideas. And this is no exception. A hour of mainly instrumental beats, scratches, and samples. It sounds pretty cool, to be honest. An hour of it though? Not sure I want to sit through something like that again. As background noise to something I am doing? Sure. That's probably more what this is geared towards any way. There are some familiar samples on here. Production wise, it sounds like every other Soundcloud DJ in the world. There isn't one thing on here that stands out that would make me think "hey, this is DJ Shadow!" on listen, I would never be able to pin point it. Unlike rock music. If I hear David Gilmour playing a solo, I know for sure that it's him. If I hear Danny Carey playing Drums, I know it's Danny Carey. Sure, I'm more versed in the latter genre, but I have heard a plethora of various DJ's in my life time... And if you don't have a "signature" - you blend in. That's my hot take. Was this album bad? Nope. But it was forgetable.

Music sounds good but album has very little substance to me. Boring listen especially since it's an hour long.

bored me a little. definitely groovy, good for studying i’d say

When the mind is scattered and the heart has stormy mixed emotions. Groovy noisey drums sound

No me ha gustado mucho...

Not a lot there. Too low key for me.

Sample-based, but often not all that interesting. Cheapest sounding drum machine under moody strings, Songs don’t go anywhere.

Not really my thing. Appreciate that it is analog sounds.

Building Steam with a grain of salt is good, but not incredible music I was promised. otherwise genuinely pretty boring.

Meh. Good house music for background noise.

Didn’t enjoy this group’s style of music. Admit that I only listed to a bit of a few cuts but that was enough.

Might be good if that's what you're into. Not my thing.

I liked some of it. I hated some of it. Some songs I would be enjoying and suddenly he mixed something in that threw off the whole vibe of the song. It got worse at it progressed. I was initially around a 3, but that score dropped as I kept listening. 2

- [ ] Album: Endtroducing….. Artist: DJ Shadow Year: 1996 Genre: Instrumental Hip-Hop, Trap Hop, Lo-Fi Hip-Hop Number on list: 827 Rating: ⭐️⭐️ While some songs are relaxing to listen to, I don’t know how you can curate a 16 song long album full of songs that sound exactly the same as the last. I didn’t know where they started and ended. I’m not even sure how it made this list… Favourite song: Stem/Long Stem Medley Would I listen again? Probably not

Seemed ok. Did not listen to a ton

Interesting and groovy at first, boring at last.

For me this is overrated, I recognise the innovation but personally don't find that it leads to something that is particularly easy to listen to.

Not my style...

Gibt mir absolut nichts.

Weird mix. In one moment it's boring elevator music, then I got surprised with some great drum fills and a change of rhythm. Then it's jazzy, then hip-hop, then elevator music again. Sometimes just a sequence of unrelated samples. Technically not bad, but I am missing a central theme.

I really enjoyed it at first, it totally wasn't what I was expecting. Was some nice chill background music but then I found the really short tracks to be a bit jarring, made me want to not keep listening to it.

Not my favorite. A sleepy and repetitive version of 90's hip hop.

Never listened to this before. Cool sound collages, reminded me of Chemical Brothers. Good music for background, much like when I listen to Explosions in the Sky. I like track 2, “Building Steam with a Grain…” and track 7, “Untitled.” **1/2

Isn't this supposed to be... danceable? I like the fact that he mixed a lot of hip hop beats to it, but it doesn't... groove at a decent pace. It's all at a middling tempo. The guy's genre is dance, and the music is not fast enough to dance to. It's more... shoegaze tempo. What's the fun in THAT?

Pretty basic instrumentals. Not for me.

Bit of an odd one. Pretty good quality. I can see this being a good album for when your life is in turmoil. More of an ambient album than something I would seek out.

not my music

He was good at duel on Gladiators

I wanted to like this more than I did (my hs bestie was obsessed with DJS), it just got too experimental and weird at some points and I didn't really enjoy listening to it. 2.5

Interesting sound. This definitely defined the genre for DJ sounds and sampling. I like to only listen this in background while doing something.

I only know DJ Shadow through Nobody Speak by RTJ, which is such a good beat I was really excited for this. He's been around a long time! There were some good beats here and there but it was largely quite restrained, didn't have as much swagger as I expected. There were a few parts that even reminded me of tubular bells, why does everything sound like Mike Oldfield? Maybe with some rappers/singers this could have been better but as is I wasn't fussed.

Too low-tempo for me

Very eh... Not awful but nothing that would bring me back to listen again.

3/10, didn't like it at all

This was not completely terrible but not my thing. Did not mind it was mostly instrumental some of the intro tracks were annoying if you were driving.

I really expected to not like this when I saw it based on the title and artist alone even though I had never heard of it. While I wasn't completely off, it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. As more of an instrumental hip hop album, I was surprised to find it more chill and interesting. It wasn't really my thing and I don't see myself returning to it, but I got through the entire thing without hating it or regretting trying. 2/5

Pretty boring, particularly for a 1hr record.

Nothing for me to connect with, really.

Whole array of different vibes, amazing scratching, but more if a background noice, than anything to fall into completely

Wanted to like this a bit more than I did; some interesting textures and I appreciate the production using samples, I always found that cool with older hip hop. ‘Number Song’ has some drive to it, cool breakdown and beats. ‘Napalm Brain’ also had a good sound to it. Wasn’t a huge fan of much else on it. Cool listen though and glad I gave it a rip.

Interesting album, nothing really stood out to me on first listen, found myself skipping around after a bit. Have a hard time deciding how I feel about sampling style records like this. Has a mood and style, but I find the arrangement a little piecemeal.

I'm not a big fan of this type of music so I'm not sure how to listen to/review it, but I think it sounded fairly nice from my limited perspective. Just not really my thing. I'm sure it's amazing for many folks out there.

2.5/5 - There is beauty in the subtle and simple and when the songs build with several instruments all complimenting each other is when this album is at its best. However these moments of beauty are undercut by experimental choices, often feeling out of place and therefore interrupting the positive moments. Ultimately making a lot of the songs feel disjointed. Organ donor is my standout track.

I'm not usually a fan of albums that use such a large amount of samples but this was alright. I'd like to listen to a version of this album without drum beats.

Nice instrumental, but very bland to listen to

Without the context this album is pale and uninteresting.

Some interesting sounds and samples. Enjoyable for sure, but not one I will be revisiting.

"Endtroducing....." by DJ Shadow is often hailed as a landmark album in the realm of instrumental hip-hop and electronic music. Released in 1996, it's constructed entirely from samples, showcasing DJ Shadow's innovative approach to beat-making and production. The album's tracks, like "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt" and "Midnight in a Perfect World," are complex, atmospheric, and demonstrate a deep knowledge of crate-digging. DJ Shadow's ability to craft intricate soundscapes is impressive. However, while "Endtroducing....." is celebrated for its groundbreaking production techniques, its accessibility can be limited. For some listeners, its instrumental nature and experimental style might make it challenging to engage with on a casual level. Additionally, it's an album that influenced countless others in the genre, which can lead to a sense of familiarity when listening to it today. In summary, "Endtroducing....." is undoubtedly an influential work that pushed the boundaries of electronic music, but its complexity and historical context may not resonate with everyone, warranting a 2/5 rating.

Sample heavy and manic. Music for DJs to listen to, but not music to enjoy for its own sake (IANADJ).

Felt like background music

Some fair music ruined with remixing....

not doing it for me at all. the "DJ" part is grating

I can see the appeal, but I’m just not impressed by a mashup of what others have created…

Didn’t like it.Boring album of mainly beats, too long for no reason and just a boring experience.

And then everyone promptly filed out of the club.

Lots of samples stuck together, but what is the end result? It's not music you can dance to, it's not music you can chill or relax to. It won't make you think, it won't make you feel happy, it won't make you feel excited, it won't make you feel sad. It won't make you feel anything except bored. It's not interesting and it's not clever. What it is, is a load of old bollox. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Midnight in a Perfect World Date listened: 12/09/23

Some good beats and he’s obviously very skilled, but an out of this is too much and repetitive.

Beats are great, but without lyrics this is relegated to background listening for me. There's a place for that, but it isn't what I was hoping for.

LOVE LOVE LOVE samples! LOVE. This is brilliant in its own right, incredibly talented, but not something I would listen to regularly.

Stem/Long Stem was pretty good, and there were points of groove to me, but overall, it wasn’t my cup of tea.

Probably the first DnB album I've listened to all the way through. No reflection on the artist, but it didn't make me want to explore him nor the genre further. Sorry, just not for me.

First listen Saved 3/13 Top track: Stem / Long Stem

Plunderphonics is usually one of my absolute favorite musical experiments out there, hell I can’t tell you how many times I’ve run the Avalanches catalog back to back. This one should’ve been a home run, then, but I found myself getting a bit bored with it due to a lack of personality. It takes a definite bit of verve to make all these musical pieces line up in a way that’s new and exciting - the glue holding everything together is the character each track receives out of sonic piecemeal. ‘Endtroducing’ lacks any kind of necessary cohesion like this to make it more the sum of its parts. Maybe it’s the rhythmic bent of the samples or the heavy amount of scratching, but this LP reads more as DJ mix than elevated creation. Found myself tuning out after the nth lengthy vocal sample that didn’t contribute anything to the track, and even nodded off in the car for a bit near the end.

honestly i love hip-hop and i'm a fan of turntablism and DJs more than most of the people I know but fuck dude, not every song needs to be punctuated by long clips of people talking

I really should like this album. It has elements I appreciate. But I don't

I like this more than most records by a DJ I've listened to so far. It's still so, so long though. Why are they always so long? Cut up a sample of me declaring this just isn't for me.

2.5 maybe. Not my taste.

Samantapainen reaktio kuin hyvänä pidettyyn jazziin: kuuntelen kohteliaasti teemat, mutta en jaksa niiden työstämistä käytännössä. Ok, tämän levyn musatyyli ei ärsytä minua. En silti ryhdy suurkuluttajaksi.

It's an album of *samples*. I mean, it's interesting as a concept, but as an album, I find it really hard to care. Listened to about a third of it and realized that I wasn't really listening to anything. Two stars just because anyone with the persistence to make an entire album from samples gets an "E for effort".

Initially very good, but then gets quite samey

aiuonnadai

I've never heard of DJ Shadow before today, so I was unsure what I was in for. My research tells me that it is hip hop/electronica. That is exactly what this is. Hip hop which is extensively mixed with samples of random shit, and a heavy dance beat. The only "lyrics" you get are snippets of people talking. I didn't hate it as much as normal electronica, but it still wasn't my favorite. As background music, this may be tolerable, but to sit and listen to it cover to cover, it grows old quickly. By the time the song The Number Song finished, I was over it. I've already forgotten much of this record. This album also features a staple of 90's hip hop, skits (or at least samples that are organized into 1 min snippets of randomness that has no bearing on the rest of the record). Overall, underwhelming record today. Forgettable, and boring. I won't be listening again. Favourite songs: The Number Song Least favourite songs: Stem/Long Stem 2/5

This is a very original sounding album with tracks that sound like they are definitely from the 90's, but then there are tracks that sound like they came out this year. I am giving praise for the variety in this one, but it doesn't flow very well and sometimes it feels like a song changed abruptly which I don't like. Had some lows, a lot of middling songs, and a high or two. What Does Your Soul Look Like Pt. 1 was really good, but not so good to listen to the whole album ever again. 2.5 rounded down on this one.

Some pretty cool beats which I would like to listen to maybe 1 song every so often or just as background music. It got pretty old pretty quickly and was hard to listen to a whole album of outtakes and experiments

This was alright. Pretty good background music but not much more.

I feel some rudiments of trip-hop, but in general I don't like this transitional form between simple electronic music and trip-hop. Sometimes it sounds unbearable.

Didn't do much for me at all

Hmm. Doesn’t really get to me

A full album with nothing but samples? Can't say I am a fan of this style of album. Music wasn't too bad to have playing in the background while working, but nothing really stood out an I didn't have any desire to go back an re-listen. Again, not terrible, just not for me. 2

Feels like this album perfectly encapsulates how hard of a ceiling electronica has with me. Some genuinely cool moments of musicianship for me, but I once again find myself thinking that I'm essentially just listening to an album of rap beats. Favorite track: Changeling

Mostly samples and no vocals. Some songs were pretty catchy but overall it got old quick.

I was looking forward to this due to loving Koze, Avalanches etc but didn't really hit the spot.

Whilst not being something I'd usually listen to it did have a way of drawing me in more than I expected. But most of the tracks did feel like after 30 seconds I'd heard the whole thing but it kept going for another 4 minutes

Some nice instrumental samples, pretty much all the vocal sample choices felt out of place. Overall the album feels best as background music

An hour of hip hop instrumentals isn’t much my thing

Definitely not my taste.

Thought it was going to be vocal-less hip hop beats all the way through, but there was also some spacey stuff thrown in. Low energy, but kinda interesting

What a long album! Zoinks. It's different, that's for sure.

Was probably groundbreaking for its time. Not so much now. This was a long listen.

Some good tracks, but after a while it becomes coffee shop background music.

Some cool layering on some cool beats, but man instrumentals just don't do it for me. Way too long for anything to stand out and shine

I really just didn’t care for this album. I wouldn’t listen to it again- it was longer than I’d like it to be and just not worth it. It was interesting at times with the various sounds but nothing up my alley.

Found the theme tune for Newstalk FM

My favorite line: She has eyes as big as jolly ranchers Uhhh very chaotic?? No real lyrics?? Not bad to listen to, especially the first two songs, but definitely will not return to.

Not my style, while the production is great it’s too wacky and lacking vocals for me

It was okay

Loved this album in high school but found it deeply boring upon relistening. Sample at the start is an amazingly arrogant way to start off and you really need to come with bangers after. This just didn’t do that. More influential than good.

Yeahhhh, I don't know. I don't dislike the mood, but neither am I moved by anything here one way or another. Using the word "shadow" feels appropriate. Sometimes shadows can be creepy, but then you realize they're just shadows and you're like why did I have an emotional response to that at all? It's a shadow. Now... imagine that shadow had a laptop and synth. Boom. Truthfully, I liked the Justice album better although the site also conspired to keep me away from reviewing it. Damn you Brexit!!!

"What does your soul look like?"

9th September 2022 Listened during the day while working from home in response to the death of the queen. Went to Freddy’s flat in the afternoon before Fritha and James came to stay for the weekend. Not hugely memorable but good background music. Again, if you were in a field at 3am, amazing.

Hmmm. I enjoyed this more than expected, but apparently less than most folks. Still, really enjoyed the more chill, atmospheric bits. Then, other pieces of the sampling just sounded like a mishmash of whatever.

Op organ donor na meh

I don’t get the appeal of DJ “albums”. Maybe it’s generational.

this album is an interesting creation. i find dj shadow's process and the concept behind this album fascinating. using uncommon songs to combine together to create a wholly original hour of music... it's a unique approach to an album. overall, it was unremarkable to me. not bad, but it didn't do much for me.

Huh. I found this to be unremarkable. From an artistic standpoint, I'm intrigued by the idea of taking nothing but samples and using it to create something new, but in the case of this album, and maybe the entire genre, the final product just isn't my thing.

There’s just something about this that rubs me the wrong way

Midnight In a Perfect World merece um remake

Forgettable in a good way. Great background music for when you need to pay attention to other things.

Quickly gets boring

Its interesting from a music history standpoint of course, but I just finished it and couldn't tell you a thing about it

After reading about this album, I think there might be something being "lost in translation"...it seems like this was new concept of using mostly sampling in music. While that is definitely a cool idea, when it just boils down to the listening of this album, for me it leaves a lot to be desired and just was boring

It was fine. I didn't realize when it was over so it wasn't exciting enough to keep my attention.

6/10 for studying just beats

I can understand why this is here, but it doesn't do much for me. I would actually be willing to give it another chance down the road.

Reminded me slightly of Shaft, more background music for me than anything else

It was an ok album. Heavy drum and bass beats comprise most of the album with some experimental stuff going on as well. It showed that a good beat is better accompanied by a good lyricist. 4.0/10

Listened to this for the first time yesterday, and didn't get it. Saw all the love it was getting on here, so listened to it again this morning, and... still don't get it. It's clearly cleverly put together, but the resulting sound isn't one that particularly appeals to me. 2/5.

05/18/22

I've enjoyed some collabs the artist has done, but I wasn't a big fan of this one. It's just a bit repetitive and lacking in ideas

Better than I was expecting, but I was expecting little. I just don't like sound of a needle scratch. Interesting to hear the ways songs are constructed but didn't float my boat.

I get why this album is highly regarded. I just find the pace too slow and end up bored every time I listen to it.

Not enough variation in the tracks to draw your attention

Interesting background album, but nothing really stood out to me. It seemed really long.

It's an interesting idea that this album is made entirely from samples and I appreciate the production expertise is requires to do that, but in the end I just don't care.

2/5 not quite...

just not my genre

At the time friends were all over this. Me, not really. Quite good breakbeats. I can see it's technically clever cut and paste sampling, but not my thing.

Never heard of DJ Shadow and didn't recognize one song on the album. Not terrible. Repetitive overall. That said, I have added it to to my "study and writing" playlist. 2.5

Culte mais bon.. Chiant The number song Organ Donnor

Pretty good

Pretty good

Solid but mostly samey/not my vibe

First listen. Better than expected. Definitely good background music. 2/5

Would have been great with lyrics. Found the drum and bass only kind of boring, but good for what it was.

Ganske digg og chill stemning her.

Midnight In a Perfect World is probably the best song on the album. Like a rock/rap remix kind of instrumental album. Was alright, nothing crazy. 5/10.

Too experimental and old school for me

It was gibberish. Not uncomfortable to listen to, and I get that he revolutionized hip hop and all, but I couldn't make it out.

Scratch scratch… scratch music

The first album made entirely of samples. I like it when an artist uses samples effectively and then elevates the material. There's no elevation here. Everything is mixed nicely enough, but after listening to this for over an hour, I'm not sure why I'm supposed to give it any more attention. Best track: Midnight In A Perfect World

I couldn't wait for this to be over. Its not bad or obnoxious, but I wasn't excited for it, was bored during it, and just waiting for it to end. That said I did hear a lot of familiar sounds within it.

Ik word er niet vrolijk van

garbage

the worst dogshit i've ever listened. 0/10

I dont do music without lyrics, I know I know its low iq but that shit is boring fuck moozart or wtv

#009 I heard the name and that critics were very positive. But as I am totally not interested in DJ stuff I I don’t consider as music but as a cut and paste exercise which might also be considered as art but not sure if I call that real music. I could also not listen to this in one go. It bored me although sometimes some interesting musical patterns were observed, but at the same time realizing that it was not created by the artist but only found and copied and pasted onto the collage. Which might be a craft on its own but does not fit in my definition of making music. Also as there is no additional lyrics on top of it (like e.g Beastie Boys Paul’s Boutique

Esto encontré: The culmination of these audio clips gives the album an unsettling, dream-like finish that perfectly encapsulates the mood of Lynch's universe.

Wow, what a terrible album! According to Wikipedia, DJ Shadow’s debut album *Endtroducing...* is “composed” of vinyl samples, which in itself is enough to warrant the worst possible rating. But DJ Shadow takes it even further, randomly splicing together random snippets and, despite the electronic beats, failing to maintain even a basic sense of rhythmic consistency. Nevertheless, the production doesn’t give the impression that any of this is accidental—so he clearly intended this result. I’m at a loss for words to write anything meaningful here—this is by far the worst of the 300 albums so far. OMG, so bad...

Unbearable this album is FUCKING NOISE POLLUTION FOR THIS TO BE IN THE “1001 albums you must hear before you die” this album is the album that is gonna kill you with how bad it is and no offense to anyone who likes it though.

Didnt know beats could be corny

Really not my thing.

Nope...

Didnt like it

7/10 3. The Number Song: Sigue siendo mas instrumental, esta no tuvo tanto flow, me parecio mas ruido que otra cosa. 2/10 4. 5/10 5. Transmission 1: interludio, sin mucho q decir 6. What does your soul look like Pt4: vuelve a tener un poco más the flow. 6/10 7. Untitled: otro interludio 8. 2/10 9. Transmission 2: más interludio? 10. Mutual Slump: Más ruido. 3/10 11. Organ Donor: ?? 12. Why Hip-Hop Sucks: ?? 13. Midnight in a perfect world: creo que mejora un poquito, vuelve a ser un bit tranquilon. 6/10 14. 4/10 15. What does your soul look like Pt 1: bastante mas tranka, no me disgusta, pero no me gusta. 5/10 16. 2/10

I hated this album. Couldn’t even finish it. I’m sure it is groundbreaking and deserves to be on this list for some reason but it’s not for me.

wasn't the biggest fan of this. Need to give it another listen to be honest.

Awful 1

God this one just sucks Lazy, boring, sounds like shit, too long, repetitive: there’s so many things I dislike about this one. When listening to hip hop I usually derive most of my enjoyment from lyrics, and the beat is a bonus if it sounds good, and somehow this one has neither. I might be able to stomach instrumental hip hop if the beats sounded even decent. It’s so frustrating because you’ll get like a quick sample that actually sounds good and then they completely undo it with a godawful 10 second segment. I don’t care if it’s artsy or whatever but I just think the whole concept of an album solely made up of samples is an awful idea. I think the worst part about this one for me is that it’s not even bad in a funny way like Rock Bottom or Faust, it’s just boring and uninspired. Only the second album I’ve given a 1 to, so pretty uniquely bad. Thank god I never have to listen to this garbage ever again

Basically a podcast

Really just wasn’t for me unfortunately

If you give a 100 monkeys 2 turntables and a microphone…

Listening to this album reminded me of being on hold with the IRS or some other government agency for 60 minutes. I know this came out in the '90s but this is elevator music for the 21st century. If I wanted to hear something that droned on and on endlessly without saying anything of substance, I would invite one of my ex-girlfriends over for dinner.

I liked some of this recording. I suppose it was innovative at the time.

Non fa per me... voterò 1

An hour of DJ music is a lot of time to spend on 808s and snippets of albums. This is what you listen to when you're too high to dance, talk or listen to lyrics. RJD2 heard this album and decided what to do with his life. It's fine as background music. Stem/Long Stem - Medley is like a 1996 Tubular Bells...could very easily be the theme music for an Exorcist sequel. It's also like some one watched Blade Runner and rescored the Vangelis. Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain - Medley is the best song on the album.

1/10 Fav: -

… no

p779. 1996. 1 star. Man discovers he has a drum machine, a sampler and no talent. This desperately wants to be "Play" by Moby and fails spectacularly.

Some bits ok mr garage band

ik ben geen fan - sorry

I couldn’t even finish this. My boyfriend thought his stereo was taking a crap with the amount of sound effects. Terrible.

I would rate this a minus one if I could

just not my thing...

I can imagine what came after and the influences this album created and it was just uncomfortable noise. I couldn't even make it through the entire thing. ;-;

Pas aimé pas mon style

The critics love it, I don't.

No no no

1/5 - it just wasn't for me ngl...

DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing.....", an album I struggled to connect with on any level. I found it to be a monotonous and tiresome listen that felt more like a chore than a pleasure. By the fourth track, the experience became a test of endurance, and I found myself just waiting for it to end. I found it to be a long and difficult listen. One star. 1 "Best Foot Forward" (3/5) 2 "Building Steam with a Grain of Salt" (2/5) 3 "The Number Song" (1/5) 4 "Changeling" (1/5) 5 "Transmission 1" (1/5) 6 "What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4)" (1/5) 7 "Untitled" (1/5) 8 "Stem/Long Stem" (1/5) 9 "Transmission 2" (1/5) 10 "Mutual Slump" (1/5) 11 "Organ Donor" (1/5) 12 "Why Hip Hop Sucks in '96" (1/5) 13 "Midnight in a Perfect World" (2/5) 14 "Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain" (1/5) 15 "What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1 – Blue Sky Revisit)" (1/5) 16 "Transmission 3" (1/5) Total - 20 Average - 1.25 113/1001 60/113 albums reviewed were new to me.

Pretty dry and boring. Each song resuses a lot of the same beats, sounds, loops, etc. Maybe in its time it was experimental and risky, but in the present day it's very safe and overdone. 3/10

Album was okay but I wouldn’t buy it. Not my normal genre of music

No pude ni acabarlo

Chato demais

This is someone playing someone else and calling it thier own

Never heard of this group. A lot of interesting sound effects, several times it sounded like a CD sounded when it was skipping. I’m glad I was listening to this while working so I didn’t totally waste an hour of my life listening to this.

Yay another album of 5 second loops that go on for 7 minutes straight. A couple of the tracks would be cool if somebody rapped a verse over them or something.

This is for someone... not for me.

Not my usual type of listen but I can see why people would like it. It is a really cool concept for an album with the use of samples and beats Highlights: - What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 1 (Blue Sky Revisit) - Mutual Slump - Changeling

The Good: It’s a clear end… The Bad: yet we were still troduced to it… The Ugly: fill in the blanks I’ve waited over a week to rate this album… why? Because slowly but surely my patience is being tested too much…. I think that I have been forced to listen to over 10 albums that were released since the late ‘90s, and we all know that hardly anything good was released since the introduction of 1 too many electronic/rap/numetal/pop crap So here’s to me finding out just now that yesterday’s album is Sign ‘O the Times, and that is going to be an easy 5* for me… This album, is a skip 1* Sorry DJ Shadow

was djaing a little too much for me

I only like this in the context of background noise for when I’m working. Otherwise what is this? Not for me.

.not for me

It’s pretty ok

The fuck is this shit

I don't really understand what this is. Is it just stuff for other people to rap over? Because this was boring as hell on its own. I don't need this in my life.

Booooring

Not my cup of tea

No, sorry, just no, this is a boring boring album, made almost entirely of samples, not into it

Really? This is one of the 1001 records I NEED to listen to before I die? Didn’t finish.

I’m sure Mr. Shadow is a nice fellow but this was just repetitive nonsense.

three songs in, i am quite bored. Skipping this now.

nothing wowing

Mostly drum fill instrumentals which are fun with some record scratching and hip hop remix elements. You could listen to this while walking through a park or city any time. Losing interest through the album as there are repetitive and tedious parts. The sense of humor in the first few tracks falls off as it goes on. Upon 2nd listen to some of these tracks it's actually pretty low effort and crappy.

Not even forgettable as I barely noticed it was playing in the first place.

I did not like the beginning, but the middle didn't seem too bad. Then toward the end it got really old and I felt like I was in a trance. I just don't get it.

Horrible

I can't think of anyone I would ever recommend this to. I feel like whatever this is had already been done way better prior to 1996 and way better after 1996. Wikipedia says a lot of the techniques used were groundbreaking and still used today, but sampling was used prior to this so I don't get it. Doesn't feel like it was very groundbreaking. Ambient filler music that you probably need to be stoned for. Fun fact - was not stoned for this. Did not enjoy.

This album felt like chore to get through

Hated it

im half way through, guys i'll be real i dont know if i can finish this. like it sounds fine but its just long as hell. okay right i skipped the last three because its 1am i am tired, i have a headache, i am done. yeah soz, not for me, that album is being forgotten forever

Started out interesting, got extremely repetitive. Two hours is way too long ...

Not my taste

It's fine. Nothing I need to listen to again.
