It just feels like getting edged

One of those that probably hit better at the time. It was great background stuff but didn’t make me want to revisit again or blow me away at any point.

Feels like it's supposed to be a backing track for people to rap over?

Why they would need to sample 'Orion' by Metallica?

Some lovely elements but limited consistency. Looking up after showed completely why.

Its not bad, I prefer the sampling approach to electronic music over the more "electronic" approach (you'll have to forgive my lack of music criticism vocabulary, I am new to this). In my opinion this album is a little too slow, resulting in it really dragging by the end. 2.5/5

Super chill. Vibing at work. Nice new find.

One Night at the Ibis Budget Hotel Lounge in Berlin.

Impressive from a technical standpoint. Underwhelming as music to enjoy.

This sounds like what a 12 year old would do with their first keyboard. Random loops and clips from movies and other songs with generic drum tracks. Boring and random.

Väldigt intressant skiva med många härliga ljudlandskap. Instrumental hiphop blir ju väldigt speciellt. Inte alls dåligt men inte jättebra heller. Några bra låtar med skön stämning.

Cool idea, but interminable as a full album.

Album 1076 of 1089 Endtroducing..... - DJ Shadow (1996) Rating : 2.5 / 5 This was an interesting listen. The album leans heavily into the electronic and sample-based side of music, and it feels more like a sound collage than a traditional album built around songs and melodies. It moves along through different textures and beats rather than focusing on what I’d call strong musicality in the traditional sense. There are moments where a groove settles in nicely, and those parts worked best for me. At other times the album feels more like it’s exploring sounds and atmosphere than trying to create something you’d hum along with later. That approach clearly has its place, and you can hear the creativity behind how everything is put together. For me, it was one of those albums that I found interesting enough to keep playing, even if it never really pulled me all the way in. Nothing here made me want to turn it off, but at the same time there weren’t many moments that made me sit up and think, “Wow.”

I had not heard of DJ Shadow. According to Wikipedia this was revolutionary for it's time. It may well have been, but I can't see it now. I certainly don't remember it from when it was released. 5 million monthly listeners on Spotify apparently, but it's lost on me.

I dont know whats so groundbreaking in album, that contains one hour of repetetive instrumentals.

I can see how this is the prequel to a lot of music that I like better. I don't hate it but I wouldn't choose to put it on

DJ Shadow? More like Rachel Maddow. Which means I sort of liked it. Heads were nodded. But not really my thing.

My rating 2.2. Unremarkable.

Para escuchar de fondo está bueno

This is a really boring album, it’s kind of weird and I don’t really like that. None of the songs stood out and I kind of just wished it was over while listening to it. It’s just not my kind of music.

So, I guess this album was picked for being a technical breakthrough, the first album made entirely from samples, according to Guinness, though I’m sure there were many albums that were 90%+ created from samples. The reliance on samples leaves the drum machine as the only instrument available to do solos, which is a bit annoying at times. I don't know if I just didn't understand the concept for this album, but it honestly just sounded like noise to me. There are a few too many prominent sounds playing repetitively in this album amongst music that actually doesn't sound too bad. In fact, the music was really pleasant and interesting at times. That makes these sounds so jarring, and it really ruins the vibe that I just find myself getting into. The good news about this album, is it did get better as it went along and wasn't bad background music for my tasks. Would I listen to it just because? No. Did I need to hear this before I die? No, but the story behind it is neat

Bare larm

I liked organ donor and why hip-hop sucks in 96 was funny. This album was proof that this experience will include albums that are important for reasons other than pure enjoyability. It did not suffer from lack of sounds.

Inoffensive but not particularly enjoyable. I liked the use of samples and I would guess there were elements of the production that were boundary-pushing at the time.

Very strange

At first it was interesting but with no vocals I soon lost interest.

Yeah this really didn't hit the spot, especially for how highly it's often rated

i fear this will be another record where I am too young to appreciate what it did for music. I have no idea what instrumental DJ music sounded like before this record, nor the impact this album would have had on the genre.

Yeah it wasn't a bad listening experience, but it was just lacking lyrics imo. And I am not particularly a lyrics guy, but this album didn't really get a message across while the message is one of the most important things in hip-hop to me. 2/5

Olvidable

Noises were certainly made. Can't say I thought much of them.

Non il mio genere ma piacevole

Felt like background music

This is exactly what I imagined a white dj from the 90s would make

It was cool to hear the first album comprised by only samples. I found it to be really boring.

It’s fine, but not my thing

Cool drummies but one of the ones that doesn’t really hold up for a 2026 listener IMO

not my thing

It’s not bad. I can hear the quality, but it is just so damn repetitive. I love the album cover

Not my cup of tea. Could be good background noise. Mid 90s skate video vibe.

stem/long stem прикольная

Not for me, sorry.

chill background music, didn't really notice it while I worked tbh

This may have been groundbreaking in 1996? It's pretty dull listening today. Some admittedly funky breakbeats layered with jazz, pads, spoken word and random radio recordings. I give it 2 for the beats.

Correcto

This is half and half for me. Some songs are overbearing and overstay their welcome, others bring a nice electronic / jazzy vibe. 2.5

Decent

not my kind of music - skipped after a few songs

Cool sound but not something I really want to listen to.

Some fun sounds but not something I would seek out. More like background sounds.

This isn’t really my music taste but it was decent background music

1. intro classic 2. très beau piano, bon morceau 3. horrible, skip 4. un peu long, bon 5. / 6. meilleur son pr l’instant 7. / 8. 2-3 bons morceaux. 2.5+/5

Ok as background music but it’s not something I would actively seek out to listen again

Megachill, alt for langt, ganske kjedelig.

Greit nok, men klipp-og-lim-musikk er i sin natur middelmådig.

Expertly produced with many layers, in saying that this album felt like it was missing so much and it goes for way too long, glad I got to listen but one I don’t think I’ll be revisiting in the future

it was whatever

completely uninteresting

First listen….. Well the intro was enough to put me off. Kept going….can see this was probably pretty influential it it’s day. I find it hard with sample based music for it to feel like it has any cohesive soul to it. This is the core problem here for me. It definitely belongs on the list, but I don’t particularly enjoy or like it. I’m in a generous mood. 2

Good drum beats

Eh it’s alr

This is fine. Well produced, inoffensive background music for me. Not my jam. Its fine.

Respect the fact that he went through vinyl records and created nearly this entire record from those samples. However, after a song or two I was checking if I wasn't shuffling the album accidentally because of how random it felt. 2/5 for the effort

Not my kind of music.

wouldnt listen to this sober

Not great

A bunch of classic beats that honestly I was fond of! What does your soul look like, Pt.1 was the best of the bunch.

1. zteam - 1.5 2. number -1.5 3. change - 1.5 4 zoul -1 5. ztem - 1 6. tranmizzion - 1.5 7. zlump - 1.5 8. donor -2 9. uuorld - 2 10. napalm - 2 11. like - 1.5

An entirely instrumental album created only from sounds and samples. Worth listening to and likely hugely influential? Yes. Would I listen to it again? Probably not.

Not my thing.

Not my fav

Oh look, some dide got a bunch of new audio gear and a MacBook. Cool. Nothing unique, interesting, or engaging about this.

Pretty unmemorable. Like it literally finished ten minutes ago and I couldn’t tell you anything about it

huge album for those that enjoy riding elevators

Bit all over the place. Some songs are like Portishead. A band I always thought were overrated. And now I’ve gone off to listen to some Portishead and quite like it. Probably a 2.5 stars for me

der zweite song ist echt gut, der rest so meh. halt trip hop, eig voll cool, aber halt ned so meins

Some of it was really good and some of it was not a vibe. Started off very briefly psychedelic and then changed into something more traditionally hip-hop before flitting across a few other genres with hip-hop at the core. This made for some interesting songs, but also some very long and overly experimental instrumentals that harshed the vibe.

It’s 6pm now. Busy day just getting to this. Left my speakers in the living room so it’s headphones for tonight. Also coincidentally just started tracking my pulse and spo2 so I’m gonna see if my pulse shoots up when it starts to get loud (I think this is gonna be rap music ?) T1 alright this sounds new let’s goo T2 I can’t even describe what this reminds me of. It just reminds me more of a time maybe like heading into the 2010s? Maybe it was a little earlier, but this is giving me similar vibes to a lot of the beats. Despite that you can definitely hear ‘the 90s’ in this beat. Fun change of pace haven’t heard this in a while. Yoooo it just hit me this sounds so derivative of ‘36 chambers’. I’m enjoying listening to this but j queued 36 chambers for after this album. Shoutout ghostface killa too I might put it on the turntable if I’m feelin it. T3 radical switch up at 2:00. T4 now THIS feels like alt 90s rap HELLL YEAAH. I love this beat Zoned out to this song good stuff. T8 I been zoned out. Having a good time. Not wanting to review but don’t want to forget anything. Aside: this is nothing like Wu Tang I take it back. I hear a nylon guitar? So weird I love it. This could be a prog rock song. J checked pulseoximeter or whatever and at the beginning it was sitting over 110 not going down, just checked and last 5 minutes+ we’re in the 80s, can feel this music relaxing me. Do I have autism? Definitely want to relisten in the future

Didn’t hate it but can’t say I liked it. I guess I just don’t appreciate this musical genre.

Was good at first but couldn't listen to it till the end. Got boring

Det blir för mycket ganska ofta vilket leder till att det mest bara blir ljud istället för musik.

ok so didnt get a chance to listen to it much, but it seemed like some cool non-lyrical punk!!

I don’t get it, hip hope musac?

I found this to be boring or annoying more than enjoyable.

The battle over AI music is currently all the rage. Is it art? Is it theft? I'd it right that someone with no training can go make music at the touch of a button, possibly taking precious money and spotlight away from those precious artists who spend their lives toiling away on their six string? But there's nuance, that little thing is tribal little monkeys tend to forget. For example - can original human-written poetry, words, or lyrics be considered art? Even if you don't like those things, you'd probably say yes. But what if those same words are applied to AI generated music? What then? What if the words form an album, and what if the AI prompts for that album were designed in such a way to form something specific, something coherent and cohesive? What then? Well that's what I did. It's online. Under Scrabo's Looming Shadow. A 46 song concept album about potato picking, with my words set to AI music from my prompts. Is it art? Is it the same type of Art as Entroducing? I don't know. All I know is that it's better than Entroducing.

Eh, I can appreciate the sampling on this album and there were a few moments I enjoyed, but it was overall a bit forgettable for me. I wouldn’t mind listening to this album again if I had to but I doubt I’d go back to it again, not my cup of tea personally. Strong 2/5, I feel like I know people who would like this a lot more than I do

A bit boring

Organ donor was a skip for me. Building steam with a grain of salt was probably my favorite of the album. This whole album was kind of strange, especially hearing samples and snippets of other songs I was super familiar with just randomly sprinkled into the song. It was pretty good, vibey background music, but I don't think I would listen to it for anything else.

Mad respect for the work that went into it an the obvious influences the work had, but I just didn't like listening to it

Boring

I’m so tired of this electronic music. This is better than some, but it’s all the same to me. I’m not impressed at all. It’s like a freckle. It’s just there and doesn’t do anything for me.

My issue with sampling in music is the same as with collage in visual art. Give it enough attention and the mind will draw connections - maybe even assign meaning to the whole. Done right, it can be a revelation. . .but it's rarely done right. There are lots of imitators, but few innovators. Music is entertainment. I don't want to work at it and find my own meaning, simply because *it's just not that important*. That will, of course, influence my rating. Students of music will disagree. Like most hip-hop, I have no patience with it. This one was at least not aurally offensive.

wicka wicka wicka

This was fine, didn't offend my ears, but didn't really excite me either.

Not my thing

I'm not super familiar with the dance/electronic genre. I had a mixed experience with this. Some tracks I wasn't not a fan of, others I was indifferent to, but often found them fading into the background. Overall I would say a well produced album that just isn't my cup of tea.

Atmospheric and good background music, but ultimately not super interesting. Clearly, he’s a talented DJ, but a full album of just DJ is tough the sell.

This was a tough slog. Drum beats gave it some life but still went DOA.

2 - like every electronics album there’s one or two bright spots but the rest of the album is full of songs that are way too long, and at best background music

It was okay

okej, al malo predugo, postane zamorno, ne znam

Some parts of this are alright but a bit samey and some bits were quite annoying to listen to. Just not my thing. Would love if I hopped into a lift and this was playing though. Specific rating - 2.3 Fav song- changeling Least fav - organ donor

I understand why it's on the list, so that's something. Might be the only thing. I didn't hate any of the songs but I didn't particularly enjoy them either, I was mostly just waiting for it to be over. Favourite song: Mutual Slump Least: Napalm Brain/ Scatter Brain

Another that I'm glad to have listened to, but not disappointed when it eventually finished. I got Odelay the other day, and occasionally this is like that but without the songs. I didn't hate it, but I didn't much enjoy it. Listened to the Bjork song it sampled afterwards, that was good.

This is a collection of proto-hip hop tracks. No lyrics, just vibes. If you're into free styling, this is a good record to have. It's a pleasant listen but 'Midnight In A Perfect World' really stands out. It's a trip hop type joint, with a melancholic tinge that only comes at night. The rest is fine but this one track is worth listening to, and maybe downloading on your streaming app.

this just made me want to listen to pretty lights, so that's what i did after

# Album Name: Endtroducing... # Artist: DJ Shadow # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Real bang average album. Complete elevator / 90's sitcom background music. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No

Not my type of music but I can appreciate it

According to the Wiki, this is entirely written in samples, which can be interpreted as DJ Shadow didn't create anything, but still created one of the most renowned albums

Might be good for background music if you need to get some work done but not something I’ll seek out again

Its different from what a was expecting, was nice experience but i dont really like the songs, but was worth the experience

Kinda bland imo

The first main song and the last song hold up well but there is lots of uninteresting long tracks that go nowhere, slowly.

4/10 I strongly disliked the start of this album - it's ugly music. Brtlutal drums that crash through the samples, laying waste to any musicalitym but I like the Organ Donor song

Strange, sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a very not good way. Not much of a hip-hop fan.

A bit all over the places. Tracks seemed to jump about, with no connection to one another, or anything helping the whole thing flow or fit together. Some individual tracks weren't terrible, but the album as a whole wasn't great.

I found myself quite bored listening to this

Lowkey esoteric.

Enjoyed it sure, at least some of the incredibly layered drumbeats. But of all the noises to listen to, I think i could have made it to death wihtout this one.

2/5 one of them big shepherd hooks comes in from stage left and pulls this off the stage please

Definition of meh. Felt a bit unorganised somehow and went on too long

was disappointed by this

Probably really influential but to me it was not much more than focus music

Nostalgiskt. Skatefilmer från tidigt 2000. Musikmässigt blir det lite tjatigt

forgetable

If I was running a fusion restaurant with cool vibes in NYC, or trying to have something on in the background while I chill with friends, this would be a good option. If I'm largely sitting and listening to it, this thing goes on and on and on. Fun use of the medium, good DJ, but you could cut it in half and have the same album.

I quite like Girl Talk and Milkman, so it's not that this is all just samples. It's just background noise. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.

Rap, Samples, 1996 -> 1-2

This sounded like podcast music. I kept expecting an ad for better help with a 10% off code. 2 stars

hard to pin down just what genre this album is, so it's an interesting listen for that reason. dj shadow also does a good job at showing off his versatility; there are lots of songs on here that sound different, yet still some sonic consistency across the project. but i kind of struggle to see the vision and aim of this album, and i feel like dj shadow didnt have much of clue either. hmmm

Es fing ganz gut an, der erste Song war wirklich in Ordnung. Dann wurde es anstrengend und zog sich in die Länge. 1 1/2 Sterne aber ich runde auf.

Debut Album. Hip Hop / Electronica. I'll give it a generous two out of five because the samples were good but overall I was bored.

Bóg mnie testuje. Umęczyłam się strasznie, powtarzalne bity, które się ciągną w nieskończoność, losowe przebitki, wszystko za długie i zbyt męczące a do tego bez polotu. 4/10

white guy who "revolutionized hip hop" thru his use of samples... um i know a trio of white guys who did that a decade earlier! MAN just listen to paul's boutique instead-- unless you're looking for something to fall asleep to, then go for this.

It’s alright , nothing stands out to me

it's giving 3rd wave coffee shop, but i don't hate it. kind of cool ambient music

It’s a no for me

Not my thing at all. I know the music may have been unique and groundbreaking, but too repetitive for my tastes.

Not to my liking. I vibe with portions, but not enough to re-listen.

I kinda get it. It's just not my thing

Most of the album is bland trip hop which trudges along a little too slowly. Then Mutual Slump comes along to wake you up. Then the record falls into the same routine again. It’s not bad, but apart from mutual slump, nothing is there to make you want more

Nothing special imo

Like a scrapbook:) 2.5 stars

a ver, como instrumental está nice, pero no es muy mi estilo y se me hizo algo pesado

Meh. Seemed kinda long and pointless.

Definitely better than I expected, but still not really my sort of thing

This is some nonsense that a college guy living in an on-campus apartment would put on in the background while trying to make a move on you. It's not bad but it's just empty and soulless.

First of all, it's not my cup of tea, but I understand the artistic involvement in the album. Most of the album is based on hip-hop and trip-hop percussions over the samples, which takes me out a lot. It feels at times very noisy and uninteresting. "Stem / Long Stem / Transmission 2" was the first song to really catch me, which I enjoyed more. I wouldn't give this album more than a 4, so that is why I give this one two stars.

Not really my vibe

Interesting Wish there were more lyrics Not really my style

Didn’t like

Felt like it should have been a live show with how random it was

I can appreciate this but it's not for me

Pretty boring not worth a listen for me.

Repetitive. Lots of samples stuck together. Like getting a glimpse into the diaries of many different people. Don’t know if I love or hate it.

bit weird, okay but did not love. On the other hand, when the album was done it lead to a pretty nice spotify rabbit hole. 2.5-3 stars.

11/06/2025 There was nothing really to it.

Hasn't aged well -1 Same beat over and over and over and over. -2

Greit klipp og lim album.

I thought dj shadow collabed with rtj to promote their brand. Not the other way around! David will love the sax on this

Nothing about this screams listen to this before you die. Some of the beats were good but half way through, they got too choppy, like drumming out of time

I'm not sure that I quite get this one. It's really good DJ'ing to be sure, but when does it go from being a beat over a bunch of other people's work to something original? I think if it had vocals over it I would be more into it. Just listening to a DJ mix isn't doing it for me today. Maybe on another day it would? I don't know. That ambiguous feeling is what makes me have vague feelings (tending towards negative) about this. That said, from the perspective of what music is used for as an art form, this is great, and would be awesome backing music. Especially in a movie or TV show.

Off the cuff remark: No doubt great skills in all that sampling, but it mostly just flows over me without registering Standout Track: What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt 4, though it doesn't exactly standout Revisit?: Welll. I wouldn't mind but don't think I will honestly make the effort.

It’s worth hearing as an example of sampling as a music form. It’s an ok listen to my ears, accepting this isn’t my thing. 2 Star

Listened to this while I was making breakfast, and I was just vibin’. Finished making breakfast to realize I still had a half hour longer to go and gave up for a while. Came back to it later in the day, and I barely made it through the album.

Instrumental Hip-Hop Liked "Midnight in a perfect world"

Background music cratedigger sample splicing hiphop ish with some random noises thrown in. Not particularly interesting or memorable in any way

Nao e hip hop. Ate q interessante. Eletrônico, mas nao chega perto de ser um massive attack

It’s fine

I thought I signed up for "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die," not "1001 Albums That Make You Wanna Die." This one was another total snoozefest.

I don't know if I just didn't understand the concept for this album, but it honestly just sounded like noise to me. There are a few too many annoying, prominent sounds playing repetitively in this album amongst music that actually doesn't sound too bad. In fact, the music was really pleasant and interesting at times. That makes these sounds so jarring, and it really ruins the vibe that I just find myself getting into. There's a lot of spoken word used throughout this album, which isn't a bad thing but it is definitely not something I prefer. The good news about this album, is it did get better as it went along and wasn't bad background music for my tasks. Would I listen to it just because? No.

Sur le papier, ça avait l'air super cool. En fait non.

I think I would have loved this album much more if I was younger and still studying. Loved to just have some instrumental albums on in the background. Nowdays I rarely listen to full instrumental albums anymore. This started out strong, but also felt very long. 2.5 stars for me

Outro...

The mix of influences (electronic, rap, hip hop, jazz) is sometimes of good quality but there are many loops and some melodies which are nice but they are immediately stopped/hashed... The album is a concept that I did not appreciate.

It was an easy listen but as a full instrumental album it isn't for me. I had a DJ background which surprised me too but wasn't interested by it. It's more like 2.5 stars so I'll keep it at 2.

Maybe if I was out at a club?

certainly unique, reminds me of aphex twin. i can’t tell if i enjoy it or if i’m forcing myself to enjoy it? there are no vocals for me to indulge in… and i could see WHY someone would enjoy it, its like background noise, but the glitching stuff is so jarring. i did enjoy stem/long stem, very hallucinogenic - i’ll be honest tho all the like 6 minute songs i skipped 3/4 into it lol

I listen to the first five songs and it’s all I had time for cause I was proper busy and it was fine . I wouldn’t choose to listen to. 5 songs felt like a whole album

This is not my thing.

Dit is waarschijnlijk een cool album voor een producer ofzo. Of belangrijk in de sample / hip-hop wereld, maar mij doet het niet echt iets. 2.1

one of those highly regarded albums that I just don't get. There are a couple of songs that I like, although calling any of these pieces, songs doesn't seem right. Nevertheless I do like Building Steam With A Grain of Salt and I do like Transmission 2. Other than those two everything seems to kinda blend together. Not sure what else to say. I don't get it. 2 stars

This album is a remarkable creative work, but it was not groundbreaking. Electronic music production is so dependent on the available technology, and this sounds dated at this point. It makes for ok background music.

This isn't for me. 2.4.

Sounds like instrumentals for Hip-Hop/some songs like lo-fi hip-hop. Hard to appreciate properly without historical context. Did not hold up over time to me.

What am I missing here? I'm sure it's an amazing technical achievement to stitch together all these samples but - crucially - what he has stitched it into is less than the sum of its parts

Interesting but nothing I could sit through consecutively unless I was high as giraffe balls.

Not my typa thing

Didn’t give it a full listen, but what I heard is not my thing

Background music.

Tbh fendis schwerig dem Album öberhaupt es Genre zuezwiise. Es bestohd vorallem us Beats wie sie im Hip Hop vorchömed. Zom teil erennerets aber au e cgli a Electronica. Hauptsach bestohts vorallem us dene Hip Hop Beats, wo eigentlich die meischte au no geil send. Aber leider hed e Beat I minere Meinig vorallem t Fonkion de Hendergrond spannend z gestalte. De rap dröber macht's de aber erscht richtig us. Leider schiint Bi dem Album Nome de DJ ond ned de Rapper debi gse z si. Das esch mega schad wels eigentlech work no gueti beats wäred, wo aber sech emmer weder wederholed, was es langwiilig macht. Debi hani mech bim erschte Track so ofs Albom gfreut.

Nothing much to grab ahold of me

I liked aspects of several songs, but overall most made me feel impatient. When it felt like we should be moving on to the next part of the song, it would just repeat the same sequence again.

Cool beats

I was just so completely not in the mood for this music that even if it were a reasonably lengthed album, I wouldn’t have been able to go along.

Definitely not my cup of tea, felt super lofi-like

I liked aspects of several songs, but overall most made me feel impatient. When it felt like we should be moving on to the next part of the song, it would just repeat the same sequence again.

Ist ok, aber am Ende nervig

As someone who is not super into this genre, I thought it was funky and had a much more hip-hop feel than an electronica feel. Like it better than most in this area.

Overall: 4/10 This one was promising based on the first song but everything was so boring and repetitive that it elicited zero emotions from me. I can see why some may enjoy it but I need more variety. If he had some guest artists to rap over these beats then I may enjoy it but the instrumentals just weren't enough. Fav Song: Building Steam with a Grain of Salt Least Fav Song: Stem/Long Stem

- phew, eher anstrengend gewesen - paar ruhigere Sachen wie „midnight in a perfect world“ waren aber ganz entspannt 2/5

Never really had much time for this type of music and thought that this would be an opportunity to revise my opinions. Alas I was reminded of all the things I disliked, the unsettling loud outbursts and disjointed melodies. This really isn't my cup of tea. 2 stars for the method of compiling these samples.

A must listen for anyone who dj’s or likes samples. Trying to get through it even if it’s not my style. Album art perfectly matches the vibe.

groundbreaking, experimental, incredibly well-polished…just totally not for me would have enjoyed it more as burn session background music, it just does not hook me otherwise i don’t dispute its importance to hip-hop, i just don’t mesh with it

Errr… it’s ‘INtroducing’.

So this is just a style of music I don't like. It's probably very well done, but I just don't care about or for it.

I did like some bits, but the weird rythms and the sort of unsatisfying tone of loops that go nowhere is not something I'd sit and listen to. I assume this is here due to some sort of musical value that I don't fully understand.

When I read the description of this being instrumental hip-hop from vinyl samples I was pretty psyched. Unfortunately I was expecting something funky and this was not that. This is very percussive/drum heavy. I was hoping for some dirty bass lines. I need more melody!!

Wine bar music for 90s hipsters.

Not really sure what to make of this one. Started out ok but only so many times you can listen to a variation of the same song. Not really sure if it’s a good album or not!

Gut um nebenbei laufenzulassen, aber nichts um gezielt zu hören. Stem / Long Stem und Transmission 2 sind ganz nett

Good music. But, leave the rap out.

I liked the early stuff better than the later stuff on this album. The beginning felt more unique and different in the techno realm but as it went on it really started to feel much more run of the mill techno. Gotta be honest I was a little surprised this was a white guy. Wikipedia says he "revolutionized hip hop" and his "work involves manipulating samples, taking rare and seldom-heard pieces of music and reworking them into parts and phrases for his songs." Is this album just included so that we could cut out 101 other albums from the list? And who are those artists that were cut out, what messages did we miss from their music so it could be sampled and repackaged into a potentially more palatable commercially appealing album? What credit financially and professionally did those artists receive? What overall message did we miss by only sampling their music?

What does my soul look like? He asked twice so I guess it's worth an answer. My soul looks like me only taller and more disheveled. I don't really know enough about DJ music to appreciate why this album was influential. I liked that it was some bass heavy grooves but after about 10 minutes I was bored with it and generally felt the album was too long. Things I'm looking for in these albums: instrumentation, creative songwriting, and unique voice/poetry. This album is lacking in these. For DJ music I think I like more upbeat dance music. This is just a lot of lukewarm languid beats.

This is a highly influential album but it mostly falls flat for me. Much of this sounds claustrophobic. Just a lot of going nowhere. I did hear a Bjork sample and an Underworld sample which sent me on over to their FAR superior albums.

Well at least some songs had a good beat. A lot was not listenable.

I'm a bit confused by this. I mean it's an album that is made up of electronic drum beats and samples of everyone from Tangerine Dream to Bjork to Metallica. I mean I guess it's kind of cool to get samples from such different artists to fit together in something that could be described as vaguely musical? It's kind of vibey I guess. Interesting I suppose. But as far as something that needed to be heard, I don't know. I mean I don't feel like I really needed to hear an entire album of repetitive samples and fake drums. Like, maybe just a few minutes while reading about how it was produced would be enough? It's ok. I guess. But maybe write your own songs next time? Was definitely ready to move on after about 15 minutes. 2/5

I respect the tenacity of DJ Shadow to produce this album almost exclusively from vinyl samples. I love hip hop sampling and how it takes the best parts of songs and highlights them, the cream at the top. However, as a collective this album doesn’t inspire me. It’s pleasant enough, but I need more from an album. …maybe I just miss the rapping.

I guess I just don’t get it.

This is not really my thing at all. I can see the creativity, and there are few songs with some hooks that are fun to listen to.

I didn’t expect an album by any DJ to be so mellow. Kinda meh really.

This is fine for background music when you have work you need to concentrate on. I suppose burn outs might like it too. Ultimately very dull.

Började rätt intressant, Steam / Long Steam var väl mest i min smak. Häftiga trummor. Det blev tyvärr rätt tråkigt och platt halvvägs igenom.

Didn’t finish only because it’s just so repetitive.

Ihan passelia taustamusiikkia.

Didn't like. I wonder what happens if you're actually familiar with the source songs. Most likely nothing special but who knows could i write rap to this? y

Can't say I got this album. I'm not against sampling, but it just doesn't do anything interesting with the samples and left me quite bored

Instrumental is not really my thing. There were times that I found myself vibing along but there were also times that I was getting tired of a particular loop or sample before the song developed something else. I enjoyed it in the beginning couple tracks but by the end I just wanted something more.

Decent lofi beats and melodies. Very contemporary sounding which is nice. But the tracks drone on for way too long - if each track was maybe 2-3 mins instead of 6+ this album would be a lot better. The interludes are also largely uninteresting and slightly jarring. Top tracks: What Doea Your Soul Look Like Pt. 1 & Pt. 4

Great idea. Instrumentally smooth considering the cutting and mixing. Would prefer there to be more extended blending of lyrical samples. Became too introspective on some tracks and although I could hear his passion, it left me a bit cold.

I found this mostly tedious, with just enough segments of interest to be disappointed when they lost it a minute later

boring

Wow - did this go on forever? It seemed like it lasted for days! I only warmed up to it in the last 3 or 4 tracks and am glad it’s over.

I don't know what to do with this. Is the entire thing just other people's work mixed together by some guy with DJ equipment? I guess it doesn't much matter. It gave me a headache.

Boy I was conflicted with this one. At times I liked the chill hip hop vibe but when the orchestration was in there and the long drum beats…I lost interest

I have impression that whole album is just 2 songs playing one after one...

The level of content-creation from this format is impressive but minus the effort, it's not really an amazing listen. That said, I do understand why it's on the 1001 list. Shadow creates some nice soundscapes but overall it's a little low-key for me, it's like the jazz form of hip-hop in a way. I prefer to be sonically boomed by cut-sample mixes (like Girl Talk for one) and this album felt more like background music. It faded away by the end so 2.0.

Ok background music at first but it got weird.

I had no idea what I was listening to after a while and definitely did a check to make sure it was still this album.... haha

Not horrible, but not my cup of tea.

Not a genre I normally would listen to. It was good background music

If it’s all sampling… is it actually created by this artist? Interesting but can’t say I’d revisit.

Forgettable

A bit too ambient/ background for me. Felt a bit boring the whole way through

This is an album that shows the artist has potential, but the album itself is basically a bunch of ideas loosely strung together.

Det var fandme træls at høre på.

Just bleh

An album completely made out of samples is truly a remarkable achievement on a technical level, and it doesn't sound like a jumbled mess. However, this is an album I appreciate and admire rather than actually enjoy. Key tracks: Building Steam With a Grain of Salt Stem - Long Stem Midnight in a Perfect World

Way too dancy/electronic for me

While I confess that this kind of music is not my normal listening fare, I really appreciate when someone can rip and mix samples and beats and make something creative and new. Unfortunately, for me, this album was not that. I felt like each track let only a handful of short samples dominate in an endless loop that eventually fades into noise more than makes music. There were not enough layers, transitions, weaving together samples to create something melodic that hooks in this collection for my tastes. Instead, it was just a nice collection of sounds that overstayed their welcome.

this was actually better than it should be but i wouldn’t seek it out and could i write poetry to this? n

At its most interesting moments this sounds like DVD menu music.

I don't know enough about the history and world of the DJ to properly appreciate this. I'm giving it a 2 because I probably wouldn't listen again, but I'm sure it deserves better.

Boring. Enough said.

The kinda music that just seeps into the background, I find it hard to hate on but I’m not a fan, it’s a bit of a victim of the cd era by being incredibly long and most of it was just samples and noise. Then the interludes feel useless too on this. 2/5

Not for me

Was ok. Didn’t finish jt

Vibes were good, but it felt a little empty. Did not listen to the full thing because it was a little noisy for my taste. Love the album cover though!

ez már jobb egy kicsit, de still no

If someone told me this was actually really groundbreaking and clever then I’m sure they’d be right but man it was boring to listen to

Not my jam

Liked some of this, especially the last 3 tracks. Not my jam.

Some interesting things on this album, but kind of a weird thing to listen to. More of a demo type album. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

just some hip hop production

5/10 this is a good album, but it's not a good listen this is the kind of album that I would use as ambient music in a very 'alt' bar, with a lot of right angles and shiny metal, and it's the kind of album ppl will use as samples for other S tier albums but at the same time it's not something you would LISTEN listen to, y'know?

Gut um nebenbei laufenzulassen, aber nichts um gezielt zu hören. Stem / Long Stem und Transmission 2 sind ganz nett

I might listen to this again, some nice ideas, but I found it boring.

This album is entirely made up of "samples" from the work of musical artists layered and arranged as new music, which is an artistic and technical accomplishment in itself, but is it worth a listen and would I ever want to hear it again? Yes to the first and a firm no to the second. There are interesting segments and some melodic spots, but a lot is also mind-numbingly repetitive. For me, a hard no.

Pieni pettymys. Organ Donor on klassikko, mut vähemmälle kuuntelulle jäänyt DJ ja odotukset oli korkeemmalla

Overproduced, too many samples

I know people call this album groundbreaking, but honestly, I just found it boring. Most of the tracks drag on way too long, looping the same ideas until they wear out their welcome. There’s barely any energy, and it all starts to blur together after a while. For all the hype about creativity and innovation, I was left waiting for something to actually catch my ear. It feels more like background music for a hip coffee shop than something I’d ever want to play again. If this is supposed to be a masterpiece, I’m missing the point.

go girl give us absolutely nothing!

i am. sorry this was boring….. 2-2.5/5

This album is background or lift music at best. Some of the tracks are pleasant in the background and others are just annoying. I have no idea how this album made the cut. Favourite song: The number song and what does your soul look like are OK. Least favourite: A lot of the music on this album is meh and background noise. Album artwork: Cool cover

Hard to rank this one! Songs were interesting but some were just clanky noise.

For my birthday I was hoping 1001 was going to pick an album that I already think is an undeniable classic, a staple in my music catalogue. Not the case here. Background music that's somehow made worse by working with it on in the background. It makes me feel like I'm in a corporate job circa Y2K. It doesn't make me feel nice. Certainly doesn't make me feel like it's my birthday :(

Far too long, far too boring. The interference on my car radio was more pleasant to listen to

DNF'd after half the album - no fault of the artist, DJing is a genre I can't really listen to on its own.

This was pretty dull. Instrumental hip hop seems like an idea doomed to mediocrity when the most interesting thing about hip hop music is the rappinh/lyrics

Not as bad as expected

The album wasn't grating to listen to, but it was just not my cup of tea. Extremely repetitive, and to be honest I don't really understand the language that DJs are trying to speak to me in.

olha, não é ruim não. Mas se você for ao setor de músicas eletrônicas para concentrar de qualquer serviço de streaming musical, você vai ganhar algo bem parecido. Então é um som que não tem nada de mais. É bom sim, mas não merece prêmio algum.

I know they probably spent countless hours on this album but it sure sounds like they just kinda made most of it up on the spot!

Rap? I guess. Art Rap more like. Not good.
