I have a sore knee, a toothache, and I didn't sleep well last night due to a roof full of squirrells that I paid to have removed in November. To avoid further irritation, I bailed after 2 songs .

Is it me, or does this sound really quaint? Metal has that bizarre quality nowadays: the mainstream has acclimatised to the genre enough that the casual listener may well find this safe, twee and pedestrian. I may have started that paragraph sarkily, but with thought I realised it's exactly right. Sepultura, and by extension death metal as a whole, occupies such a sonically conservative cul-de-sac that it feels cosy and reassuring to people who like this music and nothing but tedious to those who don't. Me, I guess I find it rather boring, but I believe that the aspects I found soporific would comfort and tranquilise a fan, and that's fine. Just don't pretend it's hard. It hasn't been hard since 1993 at the very latest. Also, is the cover meant to be a scary monster? I think I stopped drawing such beasts aged 10.

Very very solid. Arise goes straight ahead from beginning to end, with a few interesting twists and turns. The album is a bit flat to the stylistically uninitiated, but I would gladly pick it from a thrash lineup.

Quite enjoyed this one, and they are an interesting band to read about. Orgasmatron and Dead Embryonic Cells stood out to me. 3 stars as I would be happy to listen to them again but realistically won't make any effort to do so

If you enjoy rapid machine gun drums, throbbing baselines, roaring vocals and endless repetition on every song, then you would love this album! I'll give it +4 because this might be as good as it gets for this genre of music. Then I'll subtract -3 because I don't like this genre, but add +1 because it has balls and it's not the worst thing I've heard here. (I'm talking to you Def Leopard!)

There's a lot of communication going on between band members that keeps the tracks constantly evolving with sicks riffs and rapid drumming. In the midst of it all lies serene melodies as in "Desperate Cry". We got a mix of mostly thrash metal with some fast-paced death metal that serves as a good introduction to metal of the era, during a time of dramatic transition between 80s predominantly thrash and the style splits of the 90s. It's still true to form, which is both a blessing and a curse. There are lots of good songs, with others having their impressive moments, but they're not putting anything new or interesting to the table. There's no reason for me to replay this album over other thrash or death metal albums unless I suddenly remember a tune I want to revisit. Also, following the first few songs felt pretty weak, although I'm quite partial toward "Altered State," and the bonus track "Orgasmatron" was actually a decent cover. Favorites: Arise, Dead Embryonic Cells, Desperate Cry, Altered State

I like metal. I don't really love metal, but you can play me a metal song and I'll probably enjoy it. Thrash is probably my favorite genre, but I don't love metal so I don't listen to it much. Arise is a thrash album, it's a good one. Nine songs, all of them good songs. If you're thinking in terms of the big four, Sepultura is definitely the closest to Slayer in terms of their style of thrash. However, I think something Slayer did that was important was actually make each song stand on its own. Every song on Reign In Blood, for example, is definitively its own track that also stands well in context of a full album. Arise kind of felt like nine solid songs that blended together, with nothing standing out or being notable in almost any of them. By the end of the album I was almost forgetting I was listening to an album, and when the deluxe tracks from Spotify started I just didn't notice because the end of the album had no indicators of being such. It's a very middle of the road album because of this, and picking a best and worst song is a pain in the ass because of it.

Ok, but doesn't add anything to what Metallica achieved 8 years earlier.

It is good, but it didn't particularly grab me. Wore it's influences a bit too much on its sleeve. Not enough to make me want to leave and go and listen to Metallica, but it was still there.

4/10. Long and metal. Like a skewer, but without delicious grilled meat and vegetables. In any case, wasn't really a bad album, I just don't like listening to fast-paced metal like this, it just sound like stress.

Of all the 'metal' bands in the 90ies Sepultura was the only one I kind of liked (I'm putting 'metal' in quotes because I don't know enough about the genre to be able to specifyy the correct (sub)genre). To be more exact I thought Roots Bloody Roots, which played on MTV a lot, was a bit of a banger. I'm usually not really looking for aggression in my music consumption but that song seemed to be able to channel aggression into a monster of a hooks and the addition of the Brazilian percussion elements made it musically more interesting (to me) than its peers. This sounds like the band that made Roots Bloody Roots but with a dozen or so songs that are not as interesting as Roots Bloody Roots. 5/10

11/23/21 Was not expecting something like this to pop up on the list. Very cool. Solos in "Desparate Cry" are wonderfully snaky. Mostly this type of metal is just exhausting to me. The latin flair was the only thing that made it even the least bit interesting.

Don't get it. Don't like it. How are there two albums by Sepultura that I'm supposed to hear before I die? That' seems excessive. Did Sepultura create this list?

I enjoyed this album way harder than I thought I would. I normally don't enjoy death metal too much. But the vocals are brutal and raw. Just some really solid stuff. Add in the artwork too, it feels so classic. Overall do I think this album is a 5/5? Maybe not in a Objective but from my personal perspective? this feels really good honestly.

What an odd choice to include this album - which is pretty by-the-numbers thrash metal - when the following Sepultura album, Chaos A.D., would see them making a genre-defining groove metal album incorporating elements of traditional Brazilian tribal music. At least Roots made the list... but Arise over Chaos A.D.? Weird. Very weird. Still good... but not the album that should be on the list.

Even though I'm on record as a fan of metal, I've often skipped Sepultura because they just always seemed so try-hard. They seem to work so hard to come across extra shocking and creepy. But this, friends, is why you shouldn't judge an album by its cover. This record is straight up fire. It lives in that liminal zone between thrash and death metal that lends itself to really tasty grooves which practically spark with high-voltage current. It's super energetic without being frantic or chaotic, controlled without being robotic, and switches from face-melting guitar licks to heavy, pounding groves without missing a beat or losing an ounce of power. It's a damn good example of the genre.

First listen. Must. Listen. Loud. First song Arise, kicked ass! It continues to kick ass after that. Not something I would listen to often, but when I'm in the mood....this would fit the bill. 2/5.

Chaos A.D. war zu Metal-Schulzeit mega wichtig, elegisch, aufrüttelnd. Arise legt nach wie vor eine politische Messlatte an jeden Song, auf dass diese niemals unterschritten wird, aber ansonsten muss ich konstatieren, a) rausgewachsen zu sein und b) hier wirklich keine Neuerfindung des Rades vorzufinden geschweige denn c) überhaupt ein rundes Ding vorzufinden, das keine Ähnlichkeit mit einer stets vorwärts preschenden Kreissäge aufweist. Alles drin, was damals für mich an Sepultura neu und aufregend war (Metal war nicht mein Ding): Blast Beats, Brutalität, Ambient Sounds aber gleichzeitig so konzentriert, kompakt, ohne die (ich kannte und kenne mich im Metal nicht aus) damals üblichen Leder- und Gore-Klischees zu bedienen. Die Indie-Variante von Thrashmetal sozusagen. Gut zum Autofahren, gut für die Arbeit im Home Office.

Album art is a really good representation of what you'll get with this album. All the songs seem to blend together and I think that's the point. Solid metal, but not entirely for me

It was okay. A bit cookie-cutter and cliched as far as metal goes, although I suppose it wasn't so much at the time. Guitar solos were just widdly nonsense and lacking much in terms of musicality. Don't think I would listen to again.

The perfect album for a fancy dinner party with your boss or coworkers. Highly recommended if you want to make a lasting impression.

Today I learned that Sepultura is Brazilian, and that it means "grave" in Portuguese. Unfortunately, this did not make me like their music any more. I wonder if there is a thrash metal band out there somewhere that I would like. Metallica is kind of on the edge of that genre, and as I think I discussed previously, when going back to Metallica now I don't like it as much as I did 20 years ago. There is a lot of potential in the soaring guitars and rapid-fire drumming, but it rarely comes together in an appealing way for more than a minute at a time. Then there is the growling singing style that seems a hallmark of the genre. Are there thrash metal bands with higher, more melodious vocals? I'd be interested to try that. Oooh, or a thrash metal band with a female vocalist? Gonna go search for that, because Sepultura isn't doing it for me.

This guys voice really grinds my gears. I dislike his whole schtick. It’s unfortunate because there are some real musical nuggets here, mostly in the guitar playing. When there is singing on this album, it is unbearable. I’m not impressed by the extremely fast double bass drumming either, which appears far too often. I must say there are several riffs that got my head bobbing: Dead Embryonic Cells from about 1:05 remaining to 0:40 remaining, the first minute of Desperate Cry, parts of Altered State, and the beginning of Meaningless Movements.

Compared to what I thought this was gonna to sound like starting off, this album was actually really badass. Every time I thought they were about to lose me they hit a guitar solo or breakdown that was hitting the spot. Definitely will go back to this when I’m in the mood

This is hands down my favorite metal album that this list has generated so far. It still gave me a headache and was about 25 minutes too long. 2.5 stars, really.

I'll admit it: I am a big metalhead. The music here even overrides the vocals (which are growly but not terrible). I'm all about this. I can't call it perfect but it's absolutely a high level.

Thrash metal. Assume Power Trip had Sepultura as a major influence as there are major similarities. May just be the nature of thrash. Im sure it was a game changer back when it was released but didn't do much for me, felt a bit samey

I was taken aback by this record. Can't say that I expected to be listening to 90s Brazilian death metal today! While it's hard to imagine what it would take for me to love a metal album, I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. Still better than John Martyn. Love the giger esque fantasy style album cover and the actual music isn't as bad as I feared. That's not to say I enjoyed it, the 'singing' adds absolutely nothing for me but some of the extended instrumentals are reminiscent of classic attitude era wrestling themes

Better than expected and enjoyed the occasional breakdown and melodic guitar line. Apparently, I've seen them live. Heavy metal baby!

Some great riffs and lead guitar work in parts but the constant blast beats and wanky solos get a bit much after a while. The growling vocals is what really holds it back for me though, that style of vocals is just beyond the cusp of what I can tolerate when it comes to metal. Best track: Desperate Cry

It's OK, but not something I can really enjoy. The singing is a bit annoying to me. The guitars sound pretty good initially, but they get very samey very quickly. The drumming is good. On the whole, there was way too little variation within individual songs and they were too long. The album wasn't so bad, but very unvaried and I didn't feel like it, so I only listened to half.

Thrash metal, kinda stuff that used to be on Tony Hawks back in the day. Actually don't mind it but not sure how it made it to the album generator lol. Actually really enjoying this further through haha, it's like the stuff that has influenced Terror. Easy a 3/5, more like a 3.5 tbf

Is this la batucada death metal? jaja, No, pues ya en serio, me gustó bastante la batería en este disco, una velocidad chidita dentro de los límites humanos, sin el vicio de loopear con computadora al x1000 las percusiones pa que suene echo la madre y sonar malitos malotes (tal vez sí lo hicieron, jaja, pero no suena a una magnitud tan surreal como lo que ya en el black se estaba produciendo). Un sonido pesado a gusto dentro del death noventero, aunque algo anticuado para mi gusto porque me suena de repente a las producciones del trash. Substracction tiene un ritmito bouncy que me tuvo haciendo un bailecito, creo que esa fue la que más me gustó. Altered State también me inspiró un instinto asesino :v Mood: Muéranse todos, muéranse todos, al bailar, al bailar, come on, come on, baby.

A pesar de que el metal y el heavy metal no son mi hit, ya lo he dicho, pues no la pasé mal con este disco, aunque si no supiera de antes que Sepultura es una banda brasileña, jamás lo imaginaría (???). En fin, espero que los fans del género si lo aprecien o a mí hasta me gustó a veces por ignorante. Las canciones que me gustaron sobre todo: "Desperate Cry" y "Meaningless Movements". 7.5/10

Another genre I never really came around to. I respect the speed and precision of the instrumentation, and there's clearly more than average going on musically here. Typical of the genre I found the lyrics ho hum, and the vocalization does nothing for me.

Think there are some good ideas here but after a while all the chugging sounds the same. Would have loved more exploration of the harmony blending on 'Dead Embryonic Cells' or the solo work on 'Murder.'

I believe the actual musical ability of the band members is really good. The guitar riffs and the rhythm are great, but the lyrics and the singing leave much to be desired. Solid, but not for me.

Good metal enjoyed it a lot. Crazy guitar solos and riffs. Nasty drums and grimy vocals, loved it. Favorite song, Dead Embryonic Cells. Will definitely be returning to the project when I'm in the mood, 6/8.

There are moments when this thrash metal band uses its incredible technical ability to allow the speed with which they play to generate some forward momentum, but mostly they're happy to mindlessly assault the senses. What disappoints me most is they show flashes of something approaching interesting, but won't commit to it. Best track: Desperate Cry

I listen to this album a few times a week, have done since I was about 12 (I'm 37 now lol). It's metal perfection, simple as that. I couldn't think of anything I'd change - everything is exactly as it should be. Scott Burns deserves a fucking award for the production, too. 5/5.
