Bare metall. the vocals are not my taste (shout - I prefer a little bit of singing at least)
Not my thing. 2/5
Ei se tääkään Sepultura oikeen iske, vaikka hyvinhän soittaa
Metal music is the genre I feel like most unfamiliar with, I know really nothing about it, but trought this challenge I'm really trying to give it a fair try, at least I'm hoping that I'm finding the the cream of the crop. I'm still not sure what I think about this though… but sure there’s more to metal than just this, I guess this one just isn't my thing. Oh but the fact that this one’s from Brazil is pretty cool
Sub-Pantera, without the characterful guitar soloing and, presumably, the racism. Appreciate the Motorhead cover. I actually saw Sepultura support Motorhead and they were pretty good.
Technically impressive, but as someone who doesn’t like thrash metal, a challenging listen. Much prefer metal by way of Sabbath or Maiden, so there are ideas here I’m in to, but the vocal delivery and drumming are really not my bag.
Mood: 6/10 Setting: cooking dinner I thought the guitar and overall music itself was pretty hype, but the screaming was a bit much for me. I think if there was genuinely no singing at all I would have liked it a lot more
Sometimes you give it a try and come away pleasantly surprised. Other times you give it a try just to confirm your preconceived notions were spot on.
Anger and dark thrash metal with a classic feel
Not my thing at all but I can recognise the skill.
listen, i can see why its a cult favorite but its not my go to sound
Too much metal for me
Metal. Not for me 2/5
I guess I just don't care for metal very much.
Ugh. More metal. Death Metal at that. Yes, I do bob my head to portions, so I get how some could get into the music and it gets old fast, for me. I'm certain a metal fan would think the same about my Raggae habit.
It has great energy, but too loud and aggressive for me
decent as far as metal goes. not my thing tho
This genre just doesn't do it for me. The guitars and drums were killer though, so these guys seem to know what they're doing. Lyrics were too teen angsty for me, but I think all thrash metal is like that. 2.5 stars
Speed metal not my thing, but actually listened to the while thing. Some good guitar work.
Maybe it's a good album but I don't like trash
The band is from Brazil which contributes some unusual percussion. There is evidence here that someone can actually play the guitar, really well, which is not always the case with shredders, but there is no evidence that vocalization matters to anyone at all. Or writing. Or variation. There is also no evidence why this pissed-off-white-boy sound became popular - I like edge and attitude, but I wouldn't ever choose a full diet of this feeling - maybe a song or two.
Le doy un 2 por no darle un 1....
I respect this list for what it is but Robert Dimery is awful at genre music. Went through this full album annoyed to be listening to derivative metal shlock. Arise isn't terrible but it just reminded me of every Bolt Thrower album I've ever heard minus the War Hammer references which make it interesting. Then I finally finished the album and a track from Roots came on and Holy hell was it imeditiatelh interesting. Right band wrong album to a bewildering degree. What the fuck?
Somehow this didn’t have the charm of Iron Maiden or AC/DC. Sorry chaps.
Very loud but the lyrics were appropriate and I like being angry sometimes.
Who knew Brazilian heavy metal existed? I didn't, I enjoyed some of the more progressive orchestration throughout the album, and for the most part, enjoyed it. Some of it felt a little generic, but i attribute that opinion to my own taste personally.
I always struggled with Sepultura, I dunno why... I enjoyed Max's Soulfly project that came later, this just didn't move me.
not for me.
Not a massive metal fan
Not a fan of this kind of metal that just sounds like angry noise. Give me some melody too, you can do both
Might start having to skip metal albums. These just do absolutely nothing for me. Not the worst thing ive ever heard though
I’m just not a metal guy. It makes me feel angry rather than allows me to release anger. So I can certainly understand how this band is musically proficient. The drums and bass are crazy. But I can’t get over how I want to turn this off after 10 seconds. I still listened to the whole thing, but this is very much not my tempo. 2/5
There was some stuff they did musically I found interesting but it just gets overwhelmed by the aggression and it all blends into one sound. I did find it interesting though. Like the Brazilian influence at the start of Altered State, wish they used that more and explored it instead of just jumping straight into heavy metal.
Found this really boring. Technically well-made so I won’t give it one star, but I’m just not interested in this kind of corny, edgy My Soul Is Dark And Twisted stuff.
I remember being in a band in the very early 90's and trying to sound like Sepultura! Not my fav genre of music but I enjoyed the nostalgic listen! Double bass drumming and guitar shredding at its finest. We used to think this stuff was so serious, dark and edgy, now it just looks and sounds a bit silly. Orgasmatron lol
Ну поугорал.
Loud and powerful
Hilarious. Though I get the sense I'm not laughing WITH them...Musically, the drummer can't quite hold the groove in double time. Though, to be fair, Art Blakey is about the only drummer I've heard who could hold a groove double time at these tempos. Good Lord.
I guess I've always been biased towards the music by my hatred of metal heads, they just try too fucking hard, so maybe I'm missing out on metal and all that, but damn is this just unbearable and unenjoyable. Good guitar jerking tho
Sounds just like every 90s metal band. It’s the guitar solos that kill me.
This music has a time and a place. But the time is not now and the place is not here. I did not listen to this album in its entirety. I listened to the beginning of each song and fast forwarded to the middle of it. Across both the album and within each song there was little variety. The BPM and the angry growling is good for a cardio workout but, musically, it did nothing for me.
Meh
Wasn't feeling it so much
this does what it sets out to do really well i just don’t enjoy what it sets out to do
seems a little adolescent on the drumming style, so cooky. Guitars are pretty classic. Everyhting sounds artificially sped up... like a parody
Did not like the start to the album but got more into it as it played through. Lacks my favourite elements from Roots.
Per Wikipedia: "Arise is considered Sepultura's finest hour among longtime fans." Guess I'm not one of those hardcore fans, then, even though I love *Roots*. There are music genres whose true impact can mostly be measured through albums that manage to go beyond their target audience. In doing so, those albums do not only popularize said genres for the general public, they also inject outside energy stemming from other styles into an act's repertoire, thus widening that act's scope and sound palette. In the metal overall "umbrella" genre, such albums are Sepultura's *Roots*, Metallica's black album, System Of A Down's eponymous debut and/or *Toxicity*, Gojira's *From Mars To Sirius* or Mastodon's *Leviathan*. Even Van Halen's debut can count. Unfortunately *Arise* is not in that league. In retrospect, it's only a rough draft or an early sketch of the increasingly greater LPs Sepultura would release after this one. Namely *Chaos AD* and *Roots*. To be a little more specific, the reasons *Arise* is not really an "essential" album--at least for the whole metal genre--are manifold. There's some effective guitar riffing in this record, yet the latter is still a by-the-number crossover effort between trash and death metal. The outside influences that would make Sepultura great after this LP (latin rhythms and "industrial" sonic landscapes) are not yet fully digested here, since they're mostly present through those short dark ambient interludes between the cuts. Don't get me wrong, those interludes are interesting for sure. Yet they're still the equivalent of passing footnotes compared to the main "text" of this album. All of this has already been covered by many other reviewers in this section, so I'm not gonna dwell on those potential shortcomings. Yet there's one complaint about *Arise* I haven't read in the reviews when I browsed though them: indeed, no one seemed to take issue with Max Cavalera's vocals, which surprised me quite a lot (not counting the reviewers acknowledging they're allergic to trash or death metal anyway--they can't understand those sorts of vocals *at all*, and readily say so). Honestly, and as open-minded as I can try to be, for me Cavalera's short growls sound like constipated out-of-breath rants in *Arise*, at least compared to the sheer force and brute energy his voice would then acquire in Sepultura's subsequent albums. What we have here sounds too much like trash-metal 101-run-of-the-mill grunts instead, often awkwardly uttered and placed compared to the rhythm section (maybe a sign that Cavalera had not yet mastered English accentuation back then). Underwhelming to say the least. And since neither the intended idea for the vocal lines nor the lyrics are very sophisticated, the overall effect is quite tiring as far as those grunts are concerned. Not that I necessarily expect "sophistication" from the different subgenres Sepultura is tackling with... But if your performance doesn't sell the whole deal vocally speaking, there's not much left to get excited about with such overall lackluster results. So-called "hardcore fans" can say I'm splitting hair here, or that I "can't understand metal" as well, I don't care. I'm pretty sure that most of them are still very aware that *Chaos AD* and *Roots* are "objectively" better records than *Arise* anyway. Heck, a lot of those fans using this app already say so in their reviews, don't they? 2/5 for the purposes of this list, translating to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes. Next, please. Number of albums left to review: 394 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 271 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 144 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 193 (including this one)
I've enjoyed Sepultura albums more than this
Not my vibe
just not my type of music
I mean, ok, but not for me.
Le doy un 2 por no darle un 1....
My main takeaway from this album is that it gives me a better appreciation for the hard rock bands that I enjoy (like Metallica or Disturbed). I didn't enjoy the vocals here, but yelling is not uncommon in hard rock stuff, so I guess this was...too simple? Not musical enough? I know that's a weird thing to say about music, but I'm struggling to articulate the reasons this didn't work for me, which I suppose is why I'm not a music critic.
Still not into thrash music.
it's well impressive that anyone can play the drums that fast, but that doesn't mean it sounds good. that really fast kick snare kick snare thing always fucks with the flow of a song as it always sounds like a different tempo to everything else that is going on.
Definitely offside
I am a big fan of the genre but all the tracks sounded identical and lifeless. Just drums over and over. Any metal is better.
Da va kje så bra egentlig
its ok standard metal fair nothing special for me
the track "meaningless movements" is a good title since it describes a lot of this album pretty good: meaningless. showy, technical playing with nothing behind them. if that's your thing then have at it but i find it very boring.
Da va kje så bra egentlig
Despite it being thrash metal I actually found this quite boring. Surely its loud and chaotic, but damn if isn't repetitive... and I like techno.
Metal is definitely not for me. This was all just background music with nothing to really keep my interest.
I don’t think I could form a deep connection with it, like I do with my favorite records, because the songs sound too alike.
Klasický heavy metal, nic moc nevybočuje, je to ucelené dílo.
I grew up with NWOBHM scene that then fed into thrash. Some of the greatest heavy music ever made in my opinion. This goes too heavy for me, it lacks space and balance. Respect what they are doing, but not for me.
not my type of metal, this just felt very samey
As this is the second Sepultura album that has come up on this list, I thought I was going to hate this. And yes, the same screeching, screaming vocals are annoying and off-putting. Yet beneath them some of the riffs and drumming is really quite captivating, so I can't give this one star. Would be more if the vocals were cleaner and less hoarse.
I never knew sepultura was from brazil, but then again I never really cared. This is OK, but its not great, and its far from the best representative of thrash metal. 2/5
I’m not a big fan of screamo, so this doesn’t get a good rating from me. I like some of the guitar riffs.
Hard rock is just not for me.
one song repeated ad libitum
I’d never heard of Sepultura (Portuguese for “tomb”) before today, and I’m not convinced they’ve made my life any better so far. Their fourth album, “Arise”, is a prime exhibit of groove-metal, a sub-genre which places an emphasis on chugging, grinding riffs played out against a steady beat. The low end is taken up almost entirely by sludgy rhythm guitar, rarely advancing beyond about the third fret of the bottom E string (which is usually tuned down). It’s a tough, often grating and increasingly repetitive listen, but I didn’t find it as irredeemably awful as a lot of the metal I’ve sat through so far. There’s a lot of colour in the performances here, which helps to lift the songs out of the gutter: the guitar solos might be hackneyed and corny, but there’s a visceral thrill to them. The solo four and a half minutes into “Desperate Cry” is emotive and wailing, the one midway through “Dead Embryonic Cells” frenzied and chaotic. I enjoyed the drum sound (particularly those low, thick snares) but Igor Cavalera could ease up on his double bass pedals now and again. There are also a few welcome shifts and changes thrown in to keep listeners on their toes: the tribal percussion and synths in the first minute of “Altered State” caught my attention. Often the tempo shifts multiple times within one song, to nice effect: my favourite example of this was in the final minute of “Dead Embryonic Cells”. So while the pace is lively and the technical prowess is undeniable, the main thing turning me off here is the vocal performance. Max Cavalera‘s signature move is to bellow, howl and growl his way through the entire set, draining the songs of any nuance, range or depth that they could have otherwise had. It makes this a really difficult listen and unlikely to be something I’ll revisit, though I’d stop slightly short of abject hatred.
I don't enjoy this kind of thrash metal, so I'm only going to give 2 stars. It's not as awful or worthless as my 1 star ratings.
Just had to kind of get through this one - it was like getting flicked in the face every time the bass drum hit - it's just not really my speed. It's easy to appreciate the skill of the musicians but I did not enjoy the feelings the music gave me.
The most interesting parts of this album were the intros, especially the more industrial ones. I wish they would have incorporated them more into the songs themselves. Other than that, it's fairly exhausting stuff.
I didn't hear much beyond the typical thrash metal here—the growling dun-dun-dun-dun electric guitars, the frantic out-of-balance spin cycle percussion, and the Muppet monster vocals. I've heard that stuff before from others. Not being much of a fan of this genre, I just didn't hear anything distinctive or interesting and I was bored.
Am I the only one who thinks this album needs more cowbell
As an album, I found this rather tedious. I did, on occasion, find myself banging my head. But I don't really feel the need for more than one of these songs at a time.
Just not my thing - way too rocky
I actually liked this more than I thought I would, as this is definitely the kind of music my father likes to listen to (as well as The Avett Brothers, if you wanna really see the duality of man) so it's almost oddly nostalgic. That being said, this isn't what I would call "good". Most songs sound the same, and while there is definitely technical abilities on display here, none of it translates to anything I would find worthy outside of a mosh pit. Probably fun on Guitar Hero or in concert, but not exactly for while catching fish in Animal Crossing, y'know?
HL: “Desperate Cry”, “Subtraction”, "Orgasmatron" Ah my favourite band again /s I learned to temper expectations with Sepultura after Roots, as a death/thrash metal band experimenting with different styles is still a death/thrash band, and therefore won’t be my favourite thing in the world. But there was more to love in this earlier offering, I found: for one, it's closer to 80's thrash than 90's nu metal; there are more melodic passages to balance the darkness; "Desperate Cry" is like "Keep Yourself Alive" from Queen's debut in that it's a whole album's worth of riffs. And it's also like, 30 mins shorter than Roots 2.5, 2nd favourite album today; the 1st had to be "Dazzle Ships" by OMD
Not my thing! Still, avoids a lot of the 90s metal production techniques / distortion styles that I can’t stand. Doesn’t sound that dated tbh. Effective.
Not for me. At all. I tried. But I can appreciate the artistry.
Really not my kind of thing but that said, one of the better ones of this type I’ve heard on here.
Not my thing, really
Best Song: Meaningless Movements. Not much more interesting than the other tracks, but at least sufficiently heavy. Worst Song: Orgasmatron. Slow, plodding, with dumb lyrics. Winner winner. Overall: Maybe this was more influential than I'm giving it credit for, but this feels really "paint-by-numbers". I suppose if you like heaviness for heaviness' sake then this album might be for you, but otherwise it feels a bit safe.
Not for me. But, objectively, it's not bad.
Better then the other speed/death metal I've been subjected to so far. I was nodding my head during 'Dead Embryonic Cells' and 'Murder' despite myself. Orgasmatron is a good name for a song.
In my personal ranking of the (too) many subgenres of Metal, Thrash is somewhere in the middle. For my ears, this album is totally adequate for both genre and era, but fails to break any new ground. Productionwise it could have been better, the rhythm guitars especially seem to be heavily post processed and lack punch. The songs are so-so. Soooo... 2/5
Liked the instrumentals but couldn't stand the vocals.
Face melted. I long for a chorus but was banging along.
I hate this band sooooooooo much I remember having roots before and it was a nightmare I don’t think this was as bad but still a 2/5.
Some good riffs but generally shitty vocals (it's like he's just shouting in the microphone with no regards for melody whatsoever), I'm also not a big fan of the snare hitting on 1 2 3 and 4 a lot. I'm fine with it occasionally but for the first half of the album it's definitely way too much. In the later part of the album I started to notice some cool bits where I at least like the instrumentals
This was hard to get through with rare moments of okayness
It has some okay bits but it's mainly angry white men screaming
I liked it at the start, but the lyrics weren’t for me.
notes 4th album by metal band sepultura way more thrashy than the album roots i reviewed a while back im not a big thrash fan, and most of these songs blurred together for me some memorable solos and moments but not super compelling to me my fav part of roots was the groovy sections and this had like none of them fav arise most memorable of the thrashy songs cool guitar solo least fav under siege had this as my fav bc of how it opened but hated the direction it took 2/5 disappointing, relistening to roots confirmed it
Brazilian heavy metal? When I saw that I had my hopes up on a take of the genre that might be different. I was a little disappointed because if you didn't tell me this ban was Brazilian, I would have never known. Maybe sing in some portuguese? As for the genre, I don't much care for metal and especially not this kind of metal where the vocals (if you can call them that) destroy any sense of musicality. When the vocals weren't present, I enjoyed the music. So this is a tough one for me to rate since if I hate the vocals I really dislike the music, but the musicianship was clear here.
Can appreciate it is a good metal album and the angry adolescent that still lives inside me had an alright time, but this just isn't the type of music I enjoy listening to anymore.
Brouyh
Not a fan of death metal, but as this is one of the only albums in the style that’s included here, aren’t there more significant albums that could’ve taken it’s place? Not very interesting musically, with the occasional nice guitar line or rhythm. The vocalist’s accent is also a bit amusing
Inte min grej
No head banging for me
Molto casinista. Un po' tutto uguale e senza particolari guizzi: noioso.
Well, that was certainly an album. I'm not at all a fan of this type of music, but strangely enough this sort of fit my mood today. It's election day 2022 here in the US, and like many I'm feeling apprehensive and also angry at the ongoing efforts by the republican party to delegitimize our elections so they can try to gain and hold onto power despite the will of the people. Not to mention their efforts to turn back the clock on issues like abortion, gay marriage, social security, healthcare, etc. etc. etc. So that's why I'm boosting my rating for this album to 2 stars instead of 1.
Прослушано! Не зашел вообще
Not a fan of the album. Neither the riffs or the lyrics moved me
eugh, once again.
I like less thrash guitars and this had a minimum of that. But what it did have was great.
This is very CHUGGA WUGGA metal, and at the end of the day I prefer when my metal’s more uuWAAAAAAAAAGH *orchestral interlude* *bagpipes*
No thanks
trying too hard to sound good makes you sound bad
I like my speed metal speedy. This is a little less speedy than I’d like it. That said, I acknowledge the musical importance and the death metal groundbreaking. Death-breaking. Yeah, that’s it.
Hmmmmmmm a little thrashy for me but good
I don't listen to a lot of thrash or metal (and related styles), but I definitely can appreciate how this kind of music is full of some amazing musicians. To make it work well at a high level, the precision is serious, serious work, and this band shows it in spades. It's as harsh in some ways as I know they mean it to be, yet I surprised myself by enjoying quite a few of the tracks. At times, the vocals make me kind of giggle a bit only because they sing like someone mocking the genre; of course, that's how parody works, I know. To my untrained ear -- as mentioned, I really don't know much about or listen to this type of music -- the tracks all started sounding the same to me, but I'm sure a more experienced listener would be able to point out for me what I'm missing. Excellent musicans, no doubt.
I like a lot of metal, but not this. It's the vocals that kill it for me.
Not my kind of rock
This thrash (?) metal is not my style. Angry music goes against my yacht rock sensibilities.
Oh no. This isn't something I like at all.
That vocal just sits in the perfect spot in the mix. Dead Embryonic Cells is as heavy as any song could get get at this time. Digging the into on Desperate Cry. However this album really feels repetitive. It doesn't go anywhere. The wild solo on Subtraction could have had more room to breathe. The Orgasmatron cover puts it into the same sonic style as the rest of the album, which felt like a chore to listen to.
Technically I'm sure this is impressive, but thrash was never my thing. Boring and samey.
You know what, I actually appreciated the musicality of the album. I suppose I’m a little more open-minded after hearing this album when it comes to heavy or death metal. But it’s still a no for me.
Finally some uplifting music. lol It's interesting that these brothers played at Rock in Rio in 1991. I expect my Rio friend's gf would have wanted to bolt a little before the band played three quarters of their set. Yeah the music is fucking noisy although I do get a small amount of enjoyment from some of the percusision and guitar playing. This and the fact it’s the time of year to be generous uplifts it.
Is it me, or does this sound really quaint? Metal has that bizarre quality nowadays: the mainstream has acclimatised to the genre enough that the casual listener may well find this safe, twee and pedestrian. I may have started that paragraph sarkily, but with thought I realised it's exactly right. Sepultura, and by extension death metal as a whole, occupies such a sonically conservative cul-de-sac that it feels cosy and reassuring to people who like this music and nothing but tedious to those who don't. Me, I guess I find it rather boring, but I believe that the aspects I found soporific would comfort and tranquilise a fan, and that's fine. Just don't pretend it's hard. It hasn't been hard since 1993 at the very latest. Also, is the cover meant to be a scary monster? I think I stopped drawing such beasts aged 10.
If you enjoy rapid machine gun drums, throbbing baselines, roaring vocals and endless repetition on every song, then you would love this album! I'll give it +4 because this might be as good as it gets for this genre of music. Then I'll subtract -3 because I don't like this genre, but add +1 because it has balls and it's not the worst thing I've heard here. (I'm talking to you Def Leopard!)
metal
4/10. Long and metal. Like a skewer, but without delicious grilled meat and vegetables. In any case, wasn't really a bad album, I just don't like listening to fast-paced metal like this, it just sound like stress.
11/23/21 Was not expecting something like this to pop up on the list. Very cool. Solos in "Desparate Cry" are wonderfully snaky. Mostly this type of metal is just exhausting to me. The latin flair was the only thing that made it even the least bit interesting.
Second listen. Still loud. Still hard to listen to. You really have to be in the mood for this kind of music to enjoy. The music is much more enjoyable than the screaming. 2/5
Trtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrt
First listen. Must. Listen. Loud. First song Arise, kicked ass! It continues to kick ass after that. Not something I would listen to often, but when I'm in the mood....this would fit the bill. 2/5.
auch hier: muss das auf dieser liste sein?
Le doy un 2 por no darle un 1....
It was okay. A bit cookie-cutter and cliched as far as metal goes, although I suppose it wasn't so much at the time. Guitar solos were just widdly nonsense and lacking much in terms of musicality. Don't think I would listen to again.
Not my bag, mannn
I don’t understand the appeal of these records.
This is hands down my favorite metal album that this list has generated so far. It still gave me a headache and was about 25 minutes too long. 2.5 stars, really.
The grunty vocals kinda spoil some potentially interestingly crafted songs
I really didn’t like this album, but occasionally it had cool rhythms and I guess I could see someone liking it
Not my thing but I get the appeal
Not for me. I can get behind the music, but the vocals really don’t give me what I need.
Un album qui a totalement changé la vie d'eltrapeze qui passe depuis sa vie à trottiner dans les montagnes.
Not my cup of tea. 6.2/10
Love the giger esque fantasy style album cover and the actual music isn't as bad as I feared. That's not to say I enjoyed it, the 'singing' adds absolutely nothing for me but some of the extended instrumentals are reminiscent of classic attitude era wrestling themes
Better than expected and enjoyed the occasional breakdown and melodic guitar line. Apparently, I've seen them live. Heavy metal baby!
It's OK, but not something I can really enjoy. The singing is a bit annoying to me. The guitars sound pretty good initially, but they get very samey very quickly. The drumming is good. On the whole, there was way too little variation within individual songs and they were too long. The album wasn't so bad, but very unvaried and I didn't feel like it, so I only listened to half.
Repetitive but some great thrash riffage.
Hard rock muy potente, quizás demasiado. Se me pasó el gusto ya por este tipo de música, aún así no dejan de ser buenos en lo suyo.
Did not listen, very heavy
i dont like thrash metal
Musically decent, within the genre. I really hate the yelling style of singing though.
Not a metal fan
I might be too old for this now. It just gave me a headache. The music is good for what it is, I guess. Just not my thing.
Not into heavy metal
A veces quisiera que me gustará más el metal, pero nomás no.
i'm sorry no
well...the album cover is cool
Think there are some good ideas here but after a while all the chugging sounds the same. Would have loved more exploration of the harmony blending on 'Dead Embryonic Cells' or the solo work on 'Murder.'
Thrash metal. Not my genre.
Não gosto de metal
can't stand the voice, but everything else was a'ight
Unlistenable. Truly god awful.
Niet voor mij
Two songs in, and I honestly decided I hated this. Bailed on this album. Absolutely not my thing at all.
you already know what i’m going to say genuinely tried to give it a go bc the last sepultura album actually had some gorgeous acoustic guitar worked into some of their songs. but this is just repetitive and unredeemable to me.
This is the worst music made.
🤮ok, let’s move on
Sólo porque no puedo soportar el heavy
Best Track - "Dead Embryonic Cells"
Eh not for me. 2.1/10
Not for me.
Not my style in any way so it is difficult to provide unbiased review. Not going on my listen again list. Very little difference between tracks other than a few being a bit slower.
Unlisten
I liked the musicianship but the vocals are grating.
Skipping this one
Why would anyone want to listen to singing (and drumming) like this? I guess the guitar work is slightly interesting. But, mostly, it's annoying, too. The brief bits of acoustic (?) guitar were kinda nice, but they were VERY brief, and few and far between. Sort of depresses me that there's an audience for this kind of "music" (?). Mostly, this all just kind of sounds the same, and almost doesn't even sound like music. It's like this aggressively unpleasant, grating, vaguely music-adjacent noise, the appeal of which entirely eludes me.
sehr anstrengend. harte instrumentals, vocals nicht zu ertragen. jedes klingt gleich. was ist besonders an dem Album?
Sorry, but this s*** is just unlistenable.
horrible musica, odio el heavy metal no entiendo como puede gustar
I couldn't really listen to this. Groove metal, if that's what this is, ain't for me.
As I close in in my 500th album reviewed on this list I must conclude that the last few days are an attempt to break me and force me to abandon the effort. No longer content to sling endless bad British music at me now they’re slinging Brazilian Metal, immediately after they gave me Brazilian Conga - can’t make it up. So what binds these albums? Surely not the fact that anyone on the planet will die poorer if they expire before hearing it! No, they are tied together only by geographic location and being equally unenjoyable.
Puha 1.0
odeio metal, alguns riffs sao bons mas nao consigo gostar, principalmente das letras e dos vocais
No me gustó
pas pour moi sorry
Not my cup of tea
Not for me. 1/5
Unlistenable I tried but utter bilge
Nope, not it
not my style
Harsh metal
I’m not a fan of death/ thrash heavy metal. This album did not change that.
Cookie Monster rock.
Listening to this the thought occurred that these thrash metal drummers must be really fit people. So fit that they could have been elite athletes in any energetic sports. The one on this album should have chosen that way of life instead. 1/5 19/4/26
I still don't like thrash. There were a few moments that I kind of liked, and then they thrashed over the top of it.
This is very much not my jam
I didn’t like this one. Not sure I’m qualified to comment on it, but I couldn’t wait for it to be done. Favorite song: they bled together and nothing stood out as enjoyable
Maybe it's not a bad album per se, I'm just not really into metal
Not my taste, would go for nine inch nails or tool sounds.
death thrash bad. ugly sounds. music only ok but same same same. turned off.
An unhappy start to the day
This one left me cold - a pretty forgettable album
Apologies to any death metal fans but this really does all sound the same…. Was a chore to get through….
Oooohhhhh dear…dreadful stuff if easily the best of the metal albums so far, one star.
Chugga chugga growl wiggly wiggly chugga chugga growl...repeat ad nauseum
I'm not a big fan of death metal so I did not like this album
Whenever someone does that vocal style I’m already out. It just sounds so cheesy like the lame kid trying to appear tough with fingerless gloves. Guitars flew by me without an effect. Tribal drumming is the only thing I can latch onto but it’s too late at that point. Rating: 1.2
I don’t have the death in me
Death metal is not for me. Did not finish.
People actually choose to listen to this intentionally?! To call this crap is an insult to crap.
Just, no. Zero
100% no.
Absolutely brutal that there is a second album from this band on the list. This is just as bad as the last one.
Just wasn’t for me.
I did not like this at all
Jesus, someone give this dude a throat lozenge!
Not into hard rock anymore
At one point I took off my headphones to talk to someone and forgot to pause the album. It was utterly impossible for me to figure out where I left off.
Screaming is not music
Don’t know this kind of metal music well at all. Generally dislike it, so would avoid it. We’ll see. Oh boy. This guy is growling. Do not like. These lyrics are garbage too. There is a track titled Murder. Is this supposed to be cool or edgy or angry or something? A guy with a chain wallet somewhere loves this album though. Don’t like his voice. The guitar solos are the only thing worth a damn here and they’re not worth the price of admission. Not for me. I’m sure there’s talent here, but this style of music with such miserable lyrics is just as far from my style or anything I would enjoy. That being said, I understand the inclusion of an album like this on this list. To show a genre of music if this is the best version of that. Just can’t enjoy it. 1 for me.
Oh dear. Cheerful bunch aren’t they? Turgid.
Pretty boring. Speed of drumming is impressive but nothing really happens. Bland.
Got to song 2 in the studio and had to retreat
no thx
not even the best album with a mangled crab on its cover (the mollusk by ween)
Seemed repetitive and uninspiring.
Not my type of music
Hated it
Not a fan. Couldn’t tell most of the songs apart.
im sorry I can't
1,4/5
Trash
2/10 - waaaaay too heavy metal, like death metal, not for me
no me gustan estos albumes
I don't really like thrash sorry. Boring wall of noise, cringy vocals. I'm fine with hearing some local band sound like this but can't bring myself to listen to this kind of bullshit at home in my own time
What an awful album; I found really no distinction between the tracks; an annoying compilation of noise that assuredly leaves the listener with a pounding headache.
not a fan
Boring. Somehow.
I’m not a fan of Heavy Metal. I could not wait for this album to be over so I could listen to something else.
Blah metal
I have tried to get into metal and haven’t yet succeeded
Yup I still hate metal
Not my jam.
This is the 2nd album by this band on this list. And I wasn’t a fan of the first one. There has to be thousands no, millions of more deserving albums to be on this list.
It my style
Krass. Das muss ich also hören bevor ich sterbe? Dann hoffe ich, dass ich nie sterbe.
Couldn't do it. made it about 15 mins and I suppose that means it's a 1 star for me. The speed metal style is just not to my liking. :)
From the cover, to the "Brazilian death metal", and from the first song, I instantly knew I was not gonna like this at all.
Not for me 1/5
Dinin lisun
Ah lads, I gave it a try but it’s not for me
That was very loud
Passe difícil.
The precision of their music is like at times listening to a metronome. Then comes the lead vocal who I'm sure doesn't know what he is saying. It's too bad that the musicality is spoiled by the lead singer...or more like screamer.
NOT LISTENING
i dont like
Not my cup of tea.
My brain was dead enough already after a hugely long day at work, I really didn’t need this
Crap vocals and guitar solos.
No
More Brazilian heavy metal... top 1001?
Don't mind the music, but I prefer singing rather than listening to yelling.
not for me
Hated it, too intense and insane.
Not a Death Metal Guy
horrendous. every song sounds the same and I literally couldn't bear to listen after about 8 seconds - WHY is this one on the list. No, no no. Minus 1
i hate heavy metal
The fuck did i just put on. Skipped through a few tracks. Sounds like someone with a sore throat shouting to a background of roadworks. The fuck is that cover, nightmares are made of this.
It sounds like music for very angry people
Listened on August 4th 2025 Couldn't finish it. Not my cup of tea. 2.5/10
I just can’t do it. 1
They're clearly very skilled- some interesting and highly technical riffs- but not really my thing. Can't see myself returning to it unless I want to be super stressed out.
holy mother of god TORTURE
Thinking of all the glaring omissions when there are *2* Sepultura albums on this list. .................... ...at least this cover reminds me of some of the artwork in the old Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, I guess? well, I'm now rolling a d20 for a +2 Mace against the Gelatinous Cube and some of its pals and based on the double-kicks and insane bpms drilling painfully into my skull and it looks like I've rolled a 1 so that's that for this campaign. 2/10 1 star.
Yikes, my least favorite type of music heavy metal. Couldn't even listen to a full song.
It's the same song 9 times. And it's not a good song either. I just don't really like growling metal. At least the guitar work was fun. Murder had some great shredding. Best song: Murder
Why would there be more than one album by this "band?" One album of recorded vomiting is enough, thank you.
mom come pick me up im scared
I didn’t think it was possible to dislike an album as much as Kraftwerk, but congratulations to Sepultura! This was awful. I’m proud of myself for listening to approximately 15 seconds of each track. I couldn’t do any more.
If this isn’t a 1 across the board I’ll be: — shocked — disappointed — chagrined Awful in all aspects, vocal, lyrics, ”musicianship”, etc.
I made it over halfway!
OMG. Is everything that bleak? Plus all that noise? Though I have to say I the Orgasmatron cut message hits home.
Very hard. Not enjoyable, I'm not sure when would be a good time to listen to this album.
Seriously, this list is getting silly. Whats next, Eduard Khil and Trololooo
Not a fan
Nope did not enjoy this at all
I can count on one hand the albums I've bailed out on (not fully listened to). Welcome to a very exclusive club, Sepultura!
01) Arise - 4,5 02) Dead Embryonic Cells - 4,0 03) Desperate Cry - 4,0 04) Murder - 3,0 05) Subtraction - 4,0 06) Altered State - 3,0 07) Under Siege (Regnum Irae) - 4,5 08) Meaningless Movements - 3,5 09) Infected Voice - 3,5 10) Orgasmatron - 4,0 TOTAL: 3,80 (38/100) Current ranking: 565/578
Not a chance.
Most definitely not for me.
Don't like heavy mental
I will never enjoy this style of noise
My best friend in 8th grade loved this shit. Me today does not.
I spend too much of my day being shouted at by small children for me to really find enjoyment in doing the same in my free time.
It was quite funny at first, in a Spinal Tap sort of way. But the entertainment value was short lived. Beyond redemption, in every way. But I suppose that was the intention.
I arose and immediatly sat down!
'Experimental edge'? Fuck off, these guys (always guys) wouldn't know experimental if they sat on pan pipes and started tooting nursery rhymes. This would sound better played through a small Bluetooth speaker. By someone a very very long way away from me. Preferably with the volume turned all the way down. I really cannot find any redeeming features in this whatsoever. Arise? Arse more like.
I found this really triggering to my tinnitus. I liked that the lyrics were clear. I wonder if this is more common in bands singing in a second language? But overall it was dogshit. I wondered whether lyrics like these could be created by a random word generator in Excel if there was a dictionary of sad words in a table somewhere split into verbs adjectives etc...
