Reviews (page 7 of 7)
As much as I'm okay with thrash metal, I only made it a few tracks in. This quickly became tedious and far too samey.
Fucking awful. I wouldn't listen to this again unless paid a very large sum of money!!!!
Couldn’t get past the 3rd song
Insert “It’s just noise” dad quote here. This is fine if you enjoy being shouted at, but it just stresses me out.
I don’t know? This music just seems dumb. I never registered with my brain cells.
Nah, I'm good
There's some good stuff in the lyrics about the prison population, violence, white collar criminality, apartheid, that kinda thing, it's just that it's also in there with, and I am not kidding, "I didn't ask to be born", which just absolutely undercuts it all with the most teenagery wambulance shit. Realistically, I was never gonna like it, too noisy for me, but I'll stick to System of a Down. The album art is pretty sick tho.
Instrumentation was actually pretty good, but it seems I'll never get used to the singing style of death metal. More a review for the entire genre than this album in particular, as I think these Brazilian fellas are far from being bad musicians. Will never understand how this music is so (relatively) popular. Made it to song 5.
Awful noise
Meh. Haha.
2nd one star album in a row and I can't wait for the 3rd 👍
Uninspiring lead guitar, growled vocals makes this Me[h](tal) for me.
One paced, one dimensional, zero enjoyment, one star (because zero stars wasn’t an option).
Really? I was into hard rock in 1991 and this never hit my cd player. It's just ferocious rock that never lets up and the vocals (if you want to call it that) are shockingly bad. You know that feeling when you're ready to get off the rollercoaster and you don't want it to do another lap? That's what this album did for me. Did this start a new genre, is that why it's on the T1001? I have heard of ton of shitty bands that sound like this since 1991, maybe they were the first. Utterly unenjoyable. Depressing song titles. Way Too Much Kick Drum! No soul. No hits, but somehow 29M people listened to the title track on Spotify. Glad none of them are in my neighborhood. 1 star for trying.
That made my ears bleed
Verse 1 Rising from the depths of a sonic tomb, Forged in fire and twisted doom, I walk the path where the damned reside, 1001 records—my eternal guide. Pre-Chorus In every crackle, every howl of pain, The ghosts of metal whisper my name. Chorus I must endure the endless grind, The cursed albums that seal my mind, In the clash of riffs and relentless might, 1001 echoes before I fade into night. Verse 2 Through the noise and the chaos, I bleed, Each vinyl scar sows the seeds, Of ancient rage and relentless sound, In every album, my fate is found. Bridge Screams of distortion—an infernal choir, Each note ignites a funeral pyre, As I bear the weight of metal’s wrath, The record spins, leading me down a blood-soaked path. Breakdown Shredding memories, relentless and raw, No salvation in silence, only the call Of 1001 lifetimes, each a brutal test, I embrace the torment, never to rest. Chorus I must endure the endless grind, The cursed albums that seal my mind, In the clash of riffs and relentless might, 1001 echoes before I fade into night. Outro In the abyss of sound, my soul is reborn, Bound by the vinyl, tattered and worn, As the final track plays on, I rise above, A warrior of metal, forever in love.
Metal rock. Pass
As far as metal goes, I think you can do worse than this. For me personally, I couldn't wait for this to be over. I did end up with a headache after listening to it, too.
Nope
oof
The same guitar sound in every track (notice I didn't call them songs). That and bellowing. Made me wish we'd gotten a rap album today...which is saying a lot. Just awful.
This sucked. Bland basic thrash metal. The intense drumming, power chords, and incoherent voice are just thrown together and I don’t see at all what they amount to. Never again
Not my thing
OVERALL: I've been purposely putting this one off because I do not like death metal at all. After listening, my mind has barely changed. Every single song has vocals that I don't like, I really can't think of anything good other than that they aren't too annoying. I guess the intrumental is usually not that bad, but it consistently sounds the same almost every single time. The lyrics are honestly probably the most consistent and possibly the best part of this album, they are almost always good or decent, but always talk about death or something. Overall, I don't like the overly aggressive and chaotic sound and I think the lyrics could probably have more variation in topics. I really wish I gave Electric Prunes a 1, because I think I like that album as much as this one, but this being my first 1 is fine with me. SONG AVG: 4.47 PERSONAL RATING: 2.5/10 Arise: I'm definitely gonna need genius for this album. This genre is not something that I listen to often or particularly like, so I'm not expecting to like many songs here. The vocals are very aggressive, but I don't really like how they sound and I feel like it doesn't match up with the instrumental sometimes. I do enjoy some parts of the instrumental, but it is overall pretty bad. The drums are good by themselves, but sometimes they don't line up with the guitar that well. The guitar is good I guess. 4/10 Dead Embryonic Cells: I like this song when the vocals are not in it. The instrumental is an improvement from the last song, the guitar is pretty good and the drums are incredible, and I don't really dislike anything about it. I guess it's probably pretty generic, but it's still good. I don't like the vocals, and I don't really know how to explain it other than that I just really don't like the harsher style, probably because I can't understand them. 6.75/10 Desperate Cry: I really like the instrumental, lots of interesting details used and the constant switching is actually pretty good. Vocals are consistent in quality with the other songs, the last "cry" is kinda funny. The instrumental absolutely carries this song, although it does use a fade out outro. I guess the lyrics are above average??? Nothing so far has stood out lyrically to me. 8/10 Murder: The instrumental is fine, although the weird guitar that gets introduced at like 2:30 is kinda weird. The vocals are consistent with the other songs, but the lyrics are better than the other songs so that's good I guess. 3.5/10 Subtraction: The intro does not need to be 10 seconds long, but it is pretty good. I swear the drums are on a loop or something. The guitar is alternating between being the same thing as the other songs and having a decently interesting melody. The vocals are, once again, not that good. The lyrics are good I guess. 5/10 Altered State: I really like the intro, and the rest of the instrumental is pretty good but gets worse overall as the song goes on. The vocals are under average, which is a slight improvement. I don't know if I like this or hate it, but I think there are more flaws overall despite the instrumental being really creative. 7/10 Under Seige (Regnum Irae): The instrumental is the best part of this song, and it's slightly above average. I guess the lyrics are good, but I can't really hear them with the dogshit vocals. The vocals are easily the worst on this song, the weird reversed sounding vocals are horrible and don't really work well with any part of the song. I guess the outro is good. The song in the ad I got after this was better than this. 1.25/10 Meaningless Movements: Probably one of the more forgettable songs here. The instrumental is fine, I like the drums and the guitar does some interesting stuff, but most of the time it does the same measure on a loop for a while. The vocals have really weird inflection, even with the lyrics pulled up I cannot really make out some of the words. Right after listening to this, I cannot really tell you anything about it that I remember. 2/10 Infected Voice: Same comment about instrumental in Meaningless Movements here. Literally just the same review as Meaningless Movements but the vocals are better. 2.75/10
yikes
Cookie Monster throws a bag of pennies down the garbage disposal.
Varmaan hyvä lajissaan, mut en vaan saa mitään irti trashista… kaipaan edes jotain melodianpilkahduksia. Pakko antaa ykkönen, vaikka en inhoa…
Kiinnostavaa huomata kuinka kovassa mekkalassa voikaan vajota omiin ajatuksiinsa. En epäile, etteikö kelpaisi harrastajille.
Dogshit
Good vibe for the video game I was playing but I wouldn’t call it “good”
This is the first one in this project that I truly couldn't listen to. The singer isn't singing. He's making guttural sounds. Not my thing.
Not my cup of tea at all.
Originally wrote a very long review on why I didn’t find this personally essential. Deleted it as it doesn’t deserve the words - it’s just monotonous in so many ways, Boring, drivel. Wasn’t as unlistenable as the band name, album cover and song titles suggest - but that is a very low bar, and would suggest that’s also a failing of the band in a way, if you are going to be so “oh so uncomfortable” then I as a non believer should struggle, but I only struggled with boredom.
Just terrible the drumming is compartmentalized making the songs feel awkwardly stitched together and clumsy.
Fuck no. It was passable until the singing/ shouting started and it all went wrong.
Awful. Screaming and poor musicianship. Not worth a single listen.
This album has a particularly ridiculous cover. Musically, it seems quite spirited, but ultimately a bit cliched. The singer sounds pretty grumpy, and the band just sort of bang away. Not my sort of thing, and a bit headache-inducing when played on headphones.
For fuck sake, hell no.
Forgettable and redundant Nnn
Can’t say I listened to the full album so maybe the song to change my mind was the last one
Um, no. I did not care to listen.
Sorry, I couldn't get past the vocals here, which are very much not to my liking. I got four or five tracks in and felt compelled to bail.
This hurt my head. There's no nuance to this, like there is with most of the better metal albums we've had, not much in terms of variation either. Don't know why we had two of their albums, one was plenty and this one was the wrong one. 1/5.
Devil Retch on unintelligible lead vocals again. This band is only worthy of one entry on the 1001 too long album list. First time you hear them is a shock, this time I want my hour back (0.5*s)
Someone with safety pins as earrings please explain to me why this makes the list (again). It's literally the same as every other thrash metal I've heard and I still don't really like it. The description says they incorporated latin percussion and that's partially what sets this album apart from their previous but I don't hear it at all (and thanks to the list I'm a pro at latin music now). I didn't need to hear this but I guess it wasn't the worst. 1.35 for fast-drumming.
Thrash metal certainly has its place. But that place is not in my playlist. Liked this a little better than some other thrash we’ve heard here, but only a little. 1.2/5.
No way these guys should have more than one album on this list. Hopefully this is the last.
terrible! All the tracks the same; an intro that sounds promising and then just the same rhythmic guitar chords with that awful voice. 'under siege' and 'orgathron' have possibilities of turning into something interesting but all the rest was the same head-banging boredom.
Not my type of music
Instant reaction is that drums and guitar work are ace and the vocals are rubbish but the album was really samey and kept up that hyper aggressive style throughout which I got tired of pretty quickly. If I was listening to a playlist and a single song came on I wouldn't mind at all but a whole album was too much. I struggled to finish the album if I am honest
Lasted 13 seconds before I wanted to start punching kittens. No bueno.
Not my thing at all
Got half way through... Not my thing at all.
Yeah nah
I could tell by the name of the band that this would be metal or screaming and I was correct on that assessment. Not enjoyable
Nope. Couldn't finish it.
Not my thing. At all.
Dogshit
Not even a little
Some tracks ok when no one was ‘singing’. Skipped through most of it, could grow on me. Like Altered State. 1.5
They seem like great musicians but it was pretty unbearable. 2 if I could have suppressed the vocals. 1.5 as-is
Ugh, heavy metal always puts me in a bad mood.
I am not a fan of this genre so this was always going to be a rough listen. Track 1 confirmed this. To sum up this album I think it’s simply Just awful. Favourite song: none Least favourite: all of them Artwork: not good.
Seeing these reviews mention growth makes me wonder what it grew from. It's like if your fungal infection is spreading and being like, well it's showing signs of growth. I hated this.
My best mate rates Sepultura so much. He's wrong.
MetalRock, 1991 -> 1
🎧No thank you!

Painful to listen...
"Orgasmatron"? More like "Meaningless Movements"! Just f-ing dreadful. And to think there are two records by this band on this list. Zero stars should be an option, or even negative #s.
Das ist nicht mein Album. Ich bin ausgestiegen.
I'm at a loss as to why this is on this list.
Arise is a brutal and relentless assault on the senses, showcasing the band's undeniable talent and stamina. Released in 1991, the album is a landmark in the death and thrash metal genres, known for its intense and aggressive sound. From the opening track, Arise, the band unleashes a barrage of pounding drums, blistering guitar riffs, and guttural vocals. While there's no denying the technical skill and precision of the musicians, the album can feel overwhelming, akin to having someone drill into your skull for the duration. Songs like Dead Embryonic Cells and Desperate Cry are relentless in their ferocity, leaving little room for subtlety or variation. The production is raw and powerful, capturing the band's live energy but offering little reprieve for the listener. Although the album's intensity is impressive, it lacks moments of contrast that might give the listener a break from the onslaught. The album is a testament to Sepultura's mastery of the metal genre, but its unrelenting nature may not be for everyone. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None
Unlistenable
I can listen to death metal but it doesn't go anywhere does it? I guess it's more of a live experience or a primordial need for angry sound.
It’s just not my thing
Man absolutely pounds on drums while another man growls about murder and dead embryonic cells (42 minutes). If I really squint I can see the appeal of the death metal genre, but I don't think it's ever going to be something I like. Interesting notes about this album: the band is Brazilian, the main guy's father was the Italian ambassador to Brazil, and during one of their concerts in Rio someone was murdered with an axe. So there's that. Favorite song: Arise 6/27/24
Stopped after 4 or 5 songs sounded exactly the same. Very dull.
not a metal fan
No thanks.
This album was designed to make you angry. It did for me. It made me angry about having to listen to this. The constant heavy drums make you feel like you are at a construction site which is also where you happen to be inside a coffin getting nailed very loudly. I just don’t like it. I reached this conclusion very early on when listening to it. Also it is just too much all around along with every time you get a brief break they come back even more stronger. Another thing is he is just yelling which I know is a part of this metal sub genre but I don’t know what he is saying. This music is an atrocity to society. A suggestion is to listen to calm music afterwards.
No estoy pa estas
Death metal just ain’t right.
Not it for me.
Ridiculous death metal - for 13 year old boys and incels only. Frantic, toneless, pointless, souless guitar shredding, coupled with the usual silly gruff-shouted vocals. Predictable, non-musical - there just aren't enough words for how awful this is.
I knew was gonna hate this before I even put it on
I can not believe that there are two Sepultura albums on this list! Arise is much better than the previous, Roots, but that’s not saying much. To me, all the trash/death sounds like shitty Metallica. I’m sure people are freaking out reading this. Arise is a bunch of riffs thrown together. None memorable, no melody. It’s 1.5 3.6/10
not for me 1.4
nope, i won't listen to another one of these ever again
Fantastic cover. And also, a band known for pretty good covers. But like the last Sepultura, this ain't getting to me. Playing is great. Lyrics and vocal performance ruin it. So the question is - does there need to be two Sepultura albums on this list?
nope
I can't do anything with thrash metal and its variations. It all sounds the same to me, like a sound disturbance that you hope will soon be over. It's the same with this album. After playing a few tracks, I gave up on it. 1/5
Unbelievably awful thrash.
Not for me
I guess I am just old now. Lasted 30 seconds
Clearly, I'm not angry enough to enjoy this. I'm sure others will enjoy the technical aspects of it better, but I just couldn't.
no me gusta el hevy metal
Not my thing
***Insert meme of dude snatching off the headphones***
I did not like this.
Pretty monotonous. I might like it if I was 12.
Hideous! negative stars
Nej tack. Usch. Jag hade väldigt svårt att lyssna på detta. Rock är ju bra. Detta är inte bra.
Another hard no from me, it's unintelligible noise with someone screeching in the background. At best it would be a zero from me but I have to give it at least one star because the system tells me to
No he entendido nada
No thanks
Too scary.
Nope.
I disliked screaming metal and the satanic vibe.
not for me
Not my cup of tea. I like guitars but also melodies.
My ears vomited 0.0
Who knows - this may be a good thrash metal / death metal album. But it sounds pretty generic and formulaic to me with the caveat that I’m not a metal-head. I made the commitment when I started this project that I would listen to each album in its entirety. This album tested my resolve.
1,.... aturde mucho
Album: Arise Artist: Sepultara Year: 1991 Genre: Heavy Metal Rating: ⭐️ Didn’t like it one bit. Couldn’t understand what they were saying and the drums were too overbearing. Fave song: Subtraction I guess. Didn’t like any of them? Would I listen again? No.
I do no like heavy metal :(
Si la idea del baterista era causar la sensación de que estaban golpeando a alguien lo logró. Hice un esfuerzo para terminar de escucharlo.
Heavy metal with screaming vocals. Not for me.
I love the Sisters font. And the Front Line Assembly sounding production and effects, and the initial bits of some tracks. Otherwise I feel about this like someone else did about Motörhead - most of the actual “songs” sound nearly indistinguishable from each other. Crash crash riff riff solo riff riff riff the end “Desperate Cry” had a nice Ministry/NWO thing going for a bit, and the acoustic guitar is a welcome relief.
Thank you, but no thanks
Every song the same. No interest. Vocals extremely off putting. Some of the music isn't bad... so a 1 rather than a 0 star.
Ok, within 2 tracks you get the idea. It chugs along somewhere between Metallica and Iron Maiden but without any vocal melody or charm. I’m sure it goes down great in a mosh pit but a 54 year old probably needs a bit more subtlety. I’ll stick with early Opeth instead.
Made it to track 3
Fucking awful
Trying to listen to this in the Hospital Emergency Dept is not a good idea.
Ekki fyrir mig.
I could tell by the album cover I wasn’t going to like it . I’m a minute it . It’s way too yelly for me . I’m sorry I can’t
No, I don't think so
TBH I hated it. Not a fan of this heavy screamo rock. I wish I could give it 0 stars...
no!!
Please don't
Listened to first track. Did not like.
Nah
Hate this shit
Didn't even listen to this..
The vocals made this a chore.
No, thank you. While I rated another album of Sepultura a bit more favourably (because there they used latin percussion and stuff), this one here is garbage. It's annoying loud stuff that doesn't care for much structure than angry repeats. Every song sounds the same.
Nope. Too hard, don't like this kind of metal.
Jakbym to juz slyszal wczesniej, nadal tak samo niesluchalne, traszowanie dead metalowe przechodzi jedynie w gierkach i to jeszcze nie kazdych, sluchac tego poza granicami cyfrowego swiata, niemozliwe
Nope. It is screaming death metal.
If there is one genre I really loathe it's trash/death metal. It's aggressive, musically repetitive and boring and emotionally it brings out the worse from me, too. I get irritated and angry just as I am now after I finished listening to it. Sorry, but it gets a 1 from me.
This is like an SNL skit of a heavy metal band. The editors are joking with this inclusion, no? Not sure why the band bothered with separate titles for tracks 3-5, as they are all the same. Ditto tracks 6-8. Zero stars. Utter waste of time.
Lo escuche asi no mas. No soy fan
Qué cagaso escuchar esto.... No lo haré.
Jag lyckas inte ta mig igenom dagens skiva. Men det misstänkte jag direkt när jag såg vad jag skulle lyssna på idag.
Nope.
Really?
Just can't do metal like this. 1/5
Yeah. Once again: nope.
1 star. would not tarnish ears with again.
Really tried but did not work for me.
No thank yeeeewwww

3rd January 2023 Listened while working from home. Gym and last his dark materials in the evening. I get it’s a genre people enjoy, but god no.
i don’t like metal sorry
Kut productie en kut muziek!
Blegh!
Ik spreek geen Portugees, maar weet wel dat 'Sepultura' Portugees is voor 'kut met peren'.
Wat ruk
Not for me!
It was a bit too tweaky for me
couldn't listen
Not really my thing
Cannot believe I listened to every minute of this. How am I meant to comment. It all sounds the same as every other heavy metal album. Hated it
They might be Brazilian but on this evidence bog-standard death metal. Blast beats, chugging riffs and the throaty screamy vocals all the way through. Sorry.
I think I have figured out my least favourite type of music, he said in a throaty growl.
No es mi estilo
Metal 🤷
Nope. Absolute racket
Awful
Just awful
1 metal
Upsetting.
Brazillian Thrash Metal, Not my Genre I am afraid. don't see the musicality or the creativity here, just seems bland to me. I find the voice repetitive and hard to listen to too. Standard Thrash Metal 101 that I might hear from any Teenage band from the 90's. Can't pick a favourite as this would be disingenuous and I feel betray the whole point of this exercise. The only thing of any credit for me is "Orgasmatron" a cover of Lemmy and Motorhead so that shows how bad this album is! Sorry Metal fans but this is on the far end of the tolerable spectrum for me.
I like rock music, even some heavy metal, but death and thrash have always passed me by. Not my thing at all, so much so that I had to stop after the third track. I'm sure they are fine exponents of their art. but it's not my kind of art.
Too hardcore for me, couldn't make it to the end.
Sorry kids I hate metal
Nope
Face melting, heart pounding, 5 word phrases. Not for me, thanks.
noget øv musik
Ja, nej, brasiliansk heavy metal er ikke lige mig
1 1/2
Don't get it. Don't like it. How are there two albums by Sepultura that I'm supposed to hear before I die? That' seems excessive. Did Sepultura create this list?
Not ever going to work for me. Just can’t get into this style.
Nah.
Sadly there is no option for 0 stars
I'm so sorry, it's impossible to get any enjoyment out of this. Don't take this personally Brazilian Death Metal Heads.
Nah
The perfect album for a fancy dinner party with your boss or coworkers. Highly recommended if you want to make a lasting impression.
Today I learned that Sepultura is Brazilian, and that it means "grave" in Portuguese. Unfortunately, this did not make me like their music any more. I wonder if there is a thrash metal band out there somewhere that I would like. Metallica is kind of on the edge of that genre, and as I think I discussed previously, when going back to Metallica now I don't like it as much as I did 20 years ago. There is a lot of potential in the soaring guitars and rapid-fire drumming, but it rarely comes together in an appealing way for more than a minute at a time. Then there is the growling singing style that seems a hallmark of the genre. Are there thrash metal bands with higher, more melodious vocals? I'd be interested to try that. Oooh, or a thrash metal band with a female vocalist? Gonna go search for that, because Sepultura isn't doing it for me.
This guys voice really grinds my gears. I dislike his whole schtick. It’s unfortunate because there are some real musical nuggets here, mostly in the guitar playing. When there is singing on this album, it is unbearable. I’m not impressed by the extremely fast double bass drumming either, which appears far too often. I must say there are several riffs that got my head bobbing: Dead Embryonic Cells from about 1:05 remaining to 0:40 remaining, the first minute of Desperate Cry, parts of Altered State, and the beginning of Meaningless Movements.
Too heavy/thrash for me
Helle zwik
Not my tempo
Not for me...
une honte metallistique, ça va manger un bon gros 1/5
Um, no.
Shite. Literally just noise. Couldn't even begin to find a thread that I could follow. As I said at the start, shite.
Make it stop
1/5 just nope.
Make it stop!
Not for me
