Hard as fuck. Brazils premier metal act have never been a band that decides to go easy on us. Here they drop into our cerebrum and decide to stay for the duration of these 9 tracks. Blasting right through them viciously.

Not quite my everyday listen, but definitely better suited for a high intensity bike ride than the last two. I enjoyed this one more than I was expecting.

For what it is it's good but it's not what I prefer. I'd be lying if I said I listened to the whole thing but I'm still giving it 3*. It's good for what it is, I'm not going to over penalize for personal preference.

Skilled artists, cool music, nothing particular stands out to me except some neat, ambient intros that sound almost like background music in an arcade fighter game. Listening to this made me want to go listen to the Batmetal trilogy. Favorite tracks: Altered State, Desperate Cry.

My main takeaway from this album is that it gives me a better appreciation for the hard rock bands that I enjoy (like Metallica or Disturbed). I didn't enjoy the vocals here, but yelling is not uncommon in hard rock stuff, so I guess this was...too simple? Not musical enough? I know that's a weird thing to say about music, but I'm struggling to articulate the reasons this didn't work for me, which I suppose is why I'm not a music critic.

I have always appreciated Sepultura's ability to build on their sound through their career rather than constantly attempt to catch the same bolt of lightning in a bottle. I would also consider Igor Cavalera one of the most interesting metal drummers, while ARISE has tracks with bland speed/death drum blasts, Igor still sprinkles some Latin flairs that will turn your head.

Quite good. More metallica-esque than I thought it would be, cover art is very death metal. One of the songs made me think I was listening to Power Trip

it's well impressive that anyone can play the drums that fast, but that doesn't mean it sounds good. that really fast kick snare kick snare thing always fucks with the flow of a song as it always sounds like a different tempo to everything else that is going on.

Damn, been a while since i last listened to this, but it still rocks as hard as ever. The death metal edge to this really adds a lot to what would otherwise be an already quite good thrash record.

It's fine if you like death metal. I'd have to be in the mood for it to listen for more than one or two tracks. Would've been something I'd have listened to a lot in college.

I am a big fan of the genre but all the tracks sounded identical and lifeless. Just drums over and over. Any metal is better.

This album shows a lot of growth for the band and it's a legit banger of a record. But in two albums, they will perfect their sound and become one of the best metal bands of all time. This record is awesome. But the next two are even better.

Nasty heavy metal. Great gym music. I really enjoyed a majority of the breakdowns. The guys have some disgusting drops, the kind that give me a lemon face and cause my head to start nodding. Would absolutely listen again.

No, thank you. While I rated another album of Sepultura a bit more favourably (because there they used latin percussion and stuff), this one here is garbage. It's annoying loud stuff that doesn't care for much structure than angry repeats. Every song sounds the same.

Despite it being thrash metal I actually found this quite boring. Surely its loud and chaotic, but damn if isn't repetitive... and I like techno.

An unexpectedly kickass blend of thrash metal and groove metal.

I'm still a newcomer to the metal genre. I enjoyed this one. Mainly thrash, but they also incorporate some elements of death metal, heavy metal, and even hardcore and latin music. The instrumentation is great. Some of the lyrical content is interesting as well, sometimes discussing corruption and other political themes.

Metal is definitely not for me. This was all just background music with nothing to really keep my interest.

I specifically remember being afraid of Sepultura and this album cover in particular as a sheltered church kid. Seems silly in retrospect. Pretty good thrash metal. I don't LOVE it love it, but it's impressive.

If there is one genre I really loathe it's trash/death metal. It's aggressive, musically repetitive and boring and emotionally it brings out the worse from me, too. I get irritated and angry just as I am now after I finished listening to it. Sorry, but it gets a 1 from me.

This is like an SNL skit of a heavy metal band. The editors are joking with this inclusion, no? Not sure why the band bothered with separate titles for tracks 3-5, as they are all the same. Ditto tracks 6-8. Zero stars. Utter waste of time.

Klasický heavy metal, nic moc nevybočuje, je to ucelené dílo. Stačí jeden pohled na nádherný albumový art a víte, co dostanete. Je to celé dost předvídatelné, nic mě nepřekvapilo, ať už v pozitivním, či negativním smyslu. Instrumentace je nejsilnější stránkou (střídá se melodie a drsné riffy), vokály mě až tak neuchvátily, texty jsou generické. Je to solidní, ale v dnešní době už hodně zastaralé, na můj vkus moc málo experimentace. Ale věřím, že v devadesátkách to musel být nářez. Nejlepší písničky: Desperate Cry (skvělá instrumentace, chytlavé) Nejhorší písničky: nemám, všechno zní tak podobně, že by tu asi bylo víc písniček Hodnocení: 5/10 (solidní, klasický heavy metal, ale dnes už zastaralý)

I'm surprised that this is here, not because it's bad but because this list isn't great with metal. This is a killer album. Throw up the horns, bang your head, etc. Enjoy it. This isn't that Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Hanoi Rocks weak tea.

What more can I say other than it is a consistently great, headbanging metal classic? It just is and nothing more. Favorites: Dead Embryonic Cells, Desperate Cry, Subtraction, Altered State, Under Siege (Regnum Irae), Orgasmatron, C.I.U. (Criminals in Uniform).

I grew up with NWOBHM scene that then fed into thrash. Some of the greatest heavy music ever made in my opinion. This goes too heavy for me, it lacks space and balance. Respect what they are doing, but not for me.

I know that this is recognized as one of the best "Sepultura" albums, and I understand why. However, this album looks more like a path for what they achieve in "Roots" and sounds a bit repetitive—a solid 3-star, but still 3.

Overall there were some fun tracks, but a lot of it sounded 'samey' and like noise to me - it's hard to appreciate the artistry when the guitars all sound the same across the different tracks. That could be a reflection of my relationship with heavy metal (very hit or miss). It's definitely genre defining, and there were some fun bits (like the bass in Subtraction). I may continue to give this a try, but right now it doesn't feel like the right fit. Also that album art is freaky dude.

As this is the second Sepultura album that has come up on this list, I thought I was going to hate this. And yes, the same screeching, screaming vocals are annoying and off-putting. Yet beneath them some of the riffs and drumming is really quite captivating, so I can't give this one star. Would be more if the vocals were cleaner and less hoarse.

ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS… it’s alright… definitely epic if thrash is your bag.

This album made me want to run head-first through a brick wall at full speed. Not a fan of metal but thought this was pretty good. Metal artists (outside of probably the singers for the most part) never get a fair shake with their guitar and especially drumming skills. 6/10.

I never knew sepultura was from brazil, but then again I never really cared. This is OK, but its not great, and its far from the best representative of thrash metal. 2/5

I don’t know how to start this album off so I’ll just say this: it’s good. Arise is very much a thrash metal album with some hints of experimentation. The drums and bass on a number of tracks have a death metal quality to them and the vocals and themes do feel akin to death metal. The guitars are most definitely thrash metal though. And they are pretty good. Admittedly, some of the death metal feeling drums are lost by the middle of the record, occasionally making a few appearances but it is mostly thrash. Now that experimentation comes in a few different ways. Some of the tracks have industrial sounding intros (the only ones I remember are the first two tracks) which kind of don’t fit as they’re just thrown in but it’s not that bad I suppose. Also the Latin drums in the intro of “Altered State” is pretty good and helps add more tension to the upcoming track which is nice. Lastly, the song desperate cry has a mix of hardcore punk, thrash, and death metal which is pretty cool and it all mixes together seamlessly. That is probably why it is my personal favorite track on the album. Overall though, it was an enjoyable thrash metal album with some death metal influences that tried a little bit to experiment but didn’t do too much and is just really thrash and death metal. I’d say a 6/10, maybe 7/10 is warranted.

SOOO pleasantly surprised to see Sepultura listed here. AND it's an album I'm actually not too familiar with. The global score on this one is notably lower than average, and I completely understand why. Sorry, y'all, I know that dirty, grimy, oldschool death metal isn't everybody's jam, but this is a pretty fuckin good day for me.

It's good for what it is- full on Metal. You can see what it sets out to do and it does it well and I enjoyed it. It irritates me how others dismiss it without really trying to embrace the genre.

This album is a great thrash and death metal album. It also contains alternative, hardcore, and Latin influences. Metal is not a genre I’m very familiar with, but I did enjoy this album quite a bit though it doesn’t rise to the level of Master of Puppets for example.

I’d never heard of Sepultura (Portuguese for “tomb”) before today, and I’m not convinced they’ve made my life any better so far. Their fourth album, “Arise”, is a prime exhibit of groove-metal, a sub-genre which places an emphasis on chugging, grinding riffs played out against a steady beat. The low end is taken up almost entirely by sludgy rhythm guitar, rarely advancing beyond about the third fret of the bottom E string (which is usually tuned down). It’s a tough, often grating and increasingly repetitive listen, but I didn’t find it as irredeemably awful as a lot of the metal I’ve sat through so far. There’s a lot of colour in the performances here, which helps to lift the songs out of the gutter: the guitar solos might be hackneyed and corny, but there’s a visceral thrill to them. The solo four and a half minutes into “Desperate Cry” is emotive and wailing, the one midway through “Dead Embryonic Cells” frenzied and chaotic. I enjoyed the drum sound (particularly those low, thick snares) but Igor Cavalera could ease up on his double bass pedals now and again. There are also a few welcome shifts and changes thrown in to keep listeners on their toes: the tribal percussion and synths in the first minute of “Altered State” caught my attention. Often the tempo shifts multiple times within one song, to nice effect: my favourite example of this was in the final minute of “Dead Embryonic Cells”. So while the pace is lively and the technical prowess is undeniable, the main thing turning me off here is the vocal performance. Max Cavalera‘s signature move is to bellow, howl and growl his way through the entire set, draining the songs of any nuance, range or depth that they could have otherwise had. It makes this a really difficult listen and unlikely to be something I’ll revisit, though I’d stop slightly short of abject hatred.

4.0 - Another killer entry from Sepultura - these guys are the real deal. Nine songs, nine scintillating guitar solos. Add onto that political angst, consummate heavy metal drumming and nasty riffs.

Younger me would definitely have rated this album higher. Older me stills thinks this is a great thrash metal record, but also think it's "by the books", and doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from it's peers. Sepultura can do -and did- better.

I don't enjoy this kind of thrash metal, so I'm only going to give 2 stars. It's not as awful or worthless as my 1 star ratings.

Just had to kind of get through this one - it was like getting flicked in the face every time the bass drum hit - it's just not really my speed. It's easy to appreciate the skill of the musicians but I did not enjoy the feelings the music gave me.

The most interesting parts of this album were the intros, especially the more industrial ones. I wish they would have incorporated them more into the songs themselves. Other than that, it's fairly exhausting stuff.

I didn't hear much beyond the typical thrash metal here—the growling dun-dun-dun-dun electric guitars, the frantic out-of-balance spin cycle percussion, and the Muppet monster vocals. I've heard that stuff before from others. Not being much of a fan of this genre, I just didn't hear anything distinctive or interesting and I was bored.

Am I the only one who thinks this album needs more cowbell

As an album, I found this rather tedious. I did, on occasion, find myself banging my head. But I don't really feel the need for more than one of these songs at a time.

The cover certainly set some negative expectations in my mind about this album. This music is not in my wheelhouse. Still, there were several moments when I really liked what was happening - the solo in “Dead Embryonic Cells”; the introduction and solos (one with an acoustic part!) in “Altered States”; the drums and fast guitar in “Under Seige (Regnum Irae)”. There was definitely more to like here than I expected. The vocal delivery seems like a caricature, but I’m guessing that caricature might have been the product of the 30+ years of albums that followed this. I can imagine more melodious lead vocals might have made this a love connection… Not my thing, but surprisingly I didn’t hate it.

This album is perfect. Absolutely perfect. Like when I have an enemy that I've captured and tied up in the basement and needs to be interrogated and they need to be softened up. Or if I have some houseguests who need to leave, like my parents. Oh yeah! At an hour long, it doesn't have the repetition that, say, re-runs of Gilligan's island might have.

Not sure what makes this part of the 1001, but certain seems like a consistent fast metal album. It certainly has a samey-ness that carries through track after track.... fast drums, fast guitar, and a pretty monotone shouting vocal delivery. I did get a kick out of Orgasmatron.

I never fail to be mindblown by Igor's drummer. What a beast, easily one of the best from the thrash era. While I really like Arise, I find it to be a bit less memorable than its counterpart, Beneath the Remains. Don't get me wrong, there are still riffs for days in there, but they don't stick with me in the same way Beneath does. First 3 tracks + Altered State are awesome though

I'm glad that there is that kind of metal on the 1001. I do not consider "Arise" as a masterpiece of its kind, it sounds a little samey and lacks variety, but the vibe is overall violent and solid. More metal please!

Great album that grabs you from the first song and gets you pumped up throughout the whole album. I actually liked this more than I thought I would, as this is definitely the kind of music my father likes to listen to (as well as The Avett Brothers, if you wanna really see the duality of man) so it's almost oddly nostalgic. That being said, this isn't what I would call "good". Most songs sound the same, and while there is definitely technical abilities on display here, none of it translates to anything I would find worthy outside of a mosh pit. Probably fun on Guitar Hero or in concert, but not exactly for while catching fish in Animal Crossing, y'know?

Was not expecting to see this band on here, let alone realize that they are a much older band than I thought. I think I've seen a few Sepultura songs scattered on some movie soundtracks and MTV's Headbangers Ball cds, but didn't know they were from the 80's! Very impressive in that regard, even if I wasn't a fan of all the songs. Glad to see more metal on here!

The kind of metal album that rarely works for me, it's just a style that I don't have much need for in my life. I gave it a fighting chance by listening to it at the gym, and....honestly, it worked out pretty well. Quite a few jams that I saved, and I could feel the evil creeping in with every rep. Love that this is a Brazilian band! Very good job. Favorite tracks: Arise, Desperate Cry, Subtraction, Under Siege. Album art: What is this rotting creature? I love metal artists for the disgusting album art they select. The art style here is fantastic, I have no idea what I'm looking at but it's awful and I love it. 3.5/5

Didn’t finish the whole thing - but I think I kind of get it. I’m not sure there will be a five star album from me from this genre, it’s just not my thing. The thumping chugga chugga, I find a bit monotonous but I’m guessing metal fans find my music boring by comparison. I might try to listen to the whole thing - I just gotta pick my setting correctly.

HL: “Desperate Cry”, “Subtraction”, "Orgasmatron" Ah my favourite band again /s I learned to temper expectations with Sepultura after Roots, as a death/thrash metal band experimenting with different styles is still a death/thrash band, and therefore won’t be my favourite thing in the world. But there was more to love in this earlier offering, I found: for one, it's closer to 80's thrash than 90's nu metal; there are more melodic passages to balance the darkness; "Desperate Cry" is like "Keep Yourself Alive" from Queen's debut in that it's a whole album's worth of riffs. And it's also like, 30 mins shorter than Roots 2.5, 2nd favourite album today; the 1st had to be "Dazzle Ships" by OMD

Ich hab mich nie aktiv mit denen beschäftigt, dass sie an dieser Stelle erscheinen, ist nach den wenig aufregenden Alben der letzten Wochen eine Wohltat und so ließ bereits die erste Minute von Arise ein Lächeln über mein grämiges Gesicht huschen.

Thrash metal brutal i directe, gairebé tocant la frontera del death metal. Va ser el seu disc d'inflexió, la que va semblar en el seu moment la seva gran obra mestra... quan encara no havien aparegut 'Chaos A.D.' i 'Roots', que aconseguirien estar per sobre. Però ja eren una altra cosa. 'Arise' és un portentós exemple del millor thrash metal, i un dels discos icònics del génere

It's a real decent thrash metal album. According to a lot of people their best, but I have a bit of a different opinion. In contrast to the great, hard and atmospheric Beneath the Remains that preceded Arise, I find quite a few songs on Arise unimaginative and log. Chaos AD after this one went in a different direction and for me, that's where they re-found a sense of experimentation, sounds and songwriting. This one falls in-between. Still good. Not great.

Really not my kind of thing but that said, one of the better ones of this type I’ve heard on here.

I’ve always found death metal to be a pretty difficult genre to get into, but these guys seem like they’re really going to be my intro. Instrumentation fucking slaps, so do the structure and chords. My problem bas always been associated with the degree of difficulty in understanding what the singer is saying, but Derrick Green floats that line between intelligible and death metal singer very well. Definitely one of, if not, my favorite death metal album. 4/5

Best Song: Meaningless Movements. Not much more interesting than the other tracks, but at least sufficiently heavy. Worst Song: Orgasmatron. Slow, plodding, with dumb lyrics. Winner winner. Overall: Maybe this was more influential than I'm giving it credit for, but this feels really "paint-by-numbers". I suppose if you like heaviness for heaviness' sake then this album might be for you, but otherwise it feels a bit safe.

Never listened to Sepultura or any thrash metal for that matter. Better than I assumed it would be. Not the first album I'm going to reach for, but I liked it and the shredding kept everything interesting without getting into guitar virtuoso wankfest territory.

I finally got a chance to listen to Arise. I like it more than I expected to. The guitars and drums are good but I am just not a big fan of this style of vocals. This one gets a 3/5 from me.

Interesting heavy music.

I never could get into Sepultura when I was younger, and a lot more into thrash metal. They definitely leaned hard into the hardcore punk roots of thrash, which I do like because as we all know, hardcore rules. Some good songs here, Arise, Dead Embryonic Cells, Desperate Cry and some forgettable ones too, but overall a decent album and despite what people say, a good follow up to Beneath The Remains. Chaos A.D. is better, though!

I'm a fan of metal, although I probably don't qualify as a metalhead. This album felt pretty same-y, although it did have some moments that felt more iconic or recognizable (start of Meaningless Movements, some phrases in Arise) that helped some of the songs stand out. It's in the right genre for my taste, but didn't inspire much feeling.

In my personal ranking of the (too) many subgenres of Metal, Thrash is somewhere in the middle. For my ears, this album is totally adequate for both genre and era, but fails to break any new ground. Productionwise it could have been better, the rhythm guitars especially seem to be heavily post processed and lack punch. The songs are so-so. Soooo... 2/5

Good speedy aggressive thrash, a ton of cool riffs, and I can hear why a metalhead would love this, but generally the sonic assault is a bit much for me.

Some good riffs but generally shitty vocals (it's like he's just shouting in the microphone with no regards for melody whatsoever), I'm also not a big fan of the snare hitting on 1 2 3 and 4 a lot. I'm fine with it occasionally but for the first half of the album it's definitely way too much. In the later part of the album I started to notice some cool bits where I at least like the instrumentals

But then again, it's those metal songs that are just never inviting an actual wall to diverge, or a mosh to even begin. You just kind of wait in anticipation for a thing that never comes. It only invites circles pits, and even they just can't even start if a breakdown never even pretends to show itself. In the end you're left feeling incomplete and questioning if the sweat, broken bones and moshing was even worth it.

I liked it a lot more than I expected, not being familiar with the death metal genre. Much more melodic than I expected, with nicely surprising rhythmic and compositional changes throughout that kept me engaged. I liked it! And can see listening to it again, for the strong songwriting and sounds.

I've heard of Sepultura before via a documentary I was watching one time called "Global Metal" but I've never delved into their stuff before. They are a thrash metal band from Brazil, very similar to Slayer. The name "Sepultura" means 'grave' in Portuguese. The title track from this album "Arise" was banned from MTV America due it its apocalyptic religious imagery. I enjoyed this album. The ferocity and speed with which the band approaches their instruments is phenomenal. The beat is complex and ever changing, and the lyrics are heavily influenced by religion, doom, darkness, and war. This isn't something I can listen to every day, and it takes some listening to warm up to (I listened to the album 3 times today) but it is phenomenal in its own right. Favourite songs: Dead Embryonic Cells, Under Seige (Regnum Irae), Orgasmatron, Arise, Murder, Desperate Cry, Subtraction Least favourite song: I really can't pick one... 4/5

Thrash metal from Brazil! Inspired more by Slayer than Metallica, Sepultra intends to evoke evil, hellish imagery in their killer riffs and snarling vocals. And while the band's sound is firmly rooted in thrash metal, certain elements from other genres are incorporated for added variation, such as tribal drums and industrial ambience. Solid level of quality in terms of the album's output, consistent through and through. A common problem with a lot of albums like this is going to be pacing and lack of variation. I think Arise could've used more of the industrial parts to keep things fresh. Otherwise, great thrash metal is still appreciated.

Brazilian heavy metal? When I saw that I had my hopes up on a take of the genre that might be different. I was a little disappointed because if you didn't tell me this ban was Brazilian, I would have never known. Maybe sing in some portuguese? As for the genre, I don't much care for metal and especially not this kind of metal where the vocals (if you can call them that) destroy any sense of musicality. When the vocals weren't present, I enjoyed the music. So this is a tough one for me to rate since if I hate the vocals I really dislike the music, but the musicianship was clear here.

Can appreciate it is a good metal album and the angry adolescent that still lives inside me had an alright time, but this just isn't the type of music I enjoy listening to anymore.

So tight, so precise, so intense. I love the drumming in particular - there’s a lot of power in the playing but it’s really focused and on point. I can’t imagine how in sync with your bandmates you have to be to pull off music like this. There are some very drastic time signature and tempo changes but every band member clicks into place like a machine. Sepultura has a brutal, punishing style but it’s carefully controlled. I admire the technical precision of the band but one thing holding me back from loving the music is that a lot of songs blur together for me. I’m sure the more I listen to the album, the more the different songs will stand out. But I could use a little more color or personality to distinguish the songs.

Wow I am thoroughly surprised and elated that Sepultura have an album on this list. I bet if you polled death metal bands/players today, 99% of them would mention Sepultura as being an influence to them. I personally have several old band members that have Sepultura tattoos! They are great. Really amazing. Brazilian trailblazers that brought tribal rhythms to thrashy guitars and guttural, animalistic vocals. This album is the start of a 3-record span of albums that really blew open death/thrash metal- "Arise" "Chaos AD" and "Roots". While I'm REALLY glad there is a Sepultura album on here, I think that "Chaos AD" or "Roots" would have been better choices. Both of those are more refined (in a good way- you can make an argument that says "why would I want "refined" when I'm looking for animalistic thrash music?", but I promise it's better) and I think would have been better picks. SDA- if you never heard of Sepultura, listen to the track "Territory" on Chaos AD- specifically the drum solo intro. To me that captures everything about Sepultura in about 60 seconds of music. Actually listen to the whole track, it's got great lyrics (about tyranny and oppression ofc), guitar solos, everything. Speaking of guitar solos and performances, it's so funny to say but in the realm of heavy metal, this band is so tasteful. None of the members step on eachother's toes, none of them overdo anything and none of them under do (if overdo is a word then why isn't underdo) anything. They understand when there should be breaths in music- something that is the bane of many metal bands. With all of that being said, I think this album is a 3/5, and the two following albums are 4/5's. I would love if "Chaos AD" was on this list in place of "Arise".

Listened Before? N Wow, did I ever sleep on this album and this artist. This came out when I was a tween, and I should have gobbled it up during middle-high school. I didn't. I think I just may not have been ready for it. It seemed scary to a kid who the most intense thing they listened to was a bit of Slayer. The singer's voice is scary to a kid of the early 90's. Anyway, that being said, I'm now far beyond that and I have heard more extreme things on a Sunday morning. This album is a masterpiece of metal. I could tell from the first listen that I had been missing out. The musical talent and energy behind this recording is top-notch. Great stuff! Well, that was certainly an album. I'm not at all a fan of this type of music, but strangely enough this sort of fit my mood today. It's election day 2022 here in the US, and like many I'm feeling apprehensive and also angry at the ongoing efforts by the republican party to delegitimize our elections so they can try to gain and hold onto power despite the will of the people. Not to mention their efforts to turn back the clock on issues like abortion, gay marriage, social security, healthcare, etc. etc. etc. So that's why I'm boosting my rating for this album to 2 stars instead of 1.

Ahh, good old fashioned thrash. A very fine soundtrack to the morning commute. Like a shot of caffeine right in the tearduct.

A pretty thrilling, high adrenaline ride, with a thrash metal band who can actually play and an ear for melody, structure and tone absent from similar band's efforts. The production is uniformly excellent and even though the subject matter is the usual tread through, er, death and facism and crushing uniformity (alright, I'm guessing mostly because I can't really tell), it doesn't mar the great soundscape and mode. Immerse, bang your head or just get some work done - smash the system whilst working for it.

The album is OK. I like the hooks and riffs, very memorable thus far. I'm not super big on metal, truthfully. The most metal thing I listen to is Metallica. But I can definitely vibe with this, and I like the mood it creates.

It can be that they are one of the bands responsible for defining the formula, but this album is absolutely formulaic. I have never been a fan of growled vocals - I prefer vocalists who can sing, and the absence of this weighs heavily against Sepultura. The rhythm section is solid as is to be expected. The lead guitar is uninspiring however. After three or four tracks it gets rather boring - all too much the same.

I like less thrash guitars and this had a minimum of that. But what it did have was great.

Arise definitely sits in an interesting zone between thrash and death metal. I think the two albums which came after with Max Cavalera really refined Sepultura into the recognisable sound I have of them in my head. Arise is a solid album with not a lot of filler. But it also doesn't standout to me in comparison to other albums at the time.

They might be Brazilian but on this evidence bog-standard death metal. Blast beats, chugging riffs and the throaty screamy vocals all the way through. Sorry.

The influences from Master of Puppets are obvious, but Sepultura's fourth record is more brutal and experimenting in nature. And the drumming is just slightly more tight, as heard on 'Subtraction'. A monster of a track with a brutality in the higher end of the thrash metal spectrum. The legendary title track is equally as brutal and sets the tone for this entire tour de force of industrial-inspired thrash.

First; Igor is an absolute beast behind the kit. Few combines the incredible speed and sheer power that he puts behind every hit. Arise is where I really start paying attention to the Sepultura discography. Venturing further away from their death metal roots (get it? lol) and experimenting with latin instrumentation and industrial really suits their take on thrash metal. I say this with absolute no knowledge of the subject whatsoever, but this is one of the greatest records to come out of Brazil in the early 90’s.

As a metal fan, I never really listened to Sepultura, but I’ve listened to a lot of the thrash that came out of the 80’s, and while this is one of the better ones, it doesn’t really differentiate itself that much in my view. It’s a solid thrash album, but having heard Roots, which in my view is where Sepultura solidly differentiated itself from other thrash bands and hit its creative apex, it’s hard to give this a high review.

I have heard of this band but I am not familiar with any of their albums or songs. Another band that I was very psyched to check out. Sounds like classic thrash metal which I love and is one of my favorite genres. This album came out around the golden age of Thrash metal and its very apparent how much they are influenced by bands like Slayer and to a lesser extent Metallica. I can hear similarities in their riffs and the singer sounds a lot like the singer from Slayer to me. Also very similar lyrical themes that Slayer sang about. I loved this album a lot and I will be doing a deep dive of their discography to see what else they have produced over the years. \m/

I don't even like thrash metal that much, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. I'd definitely listen to it again and I plan on checking out their other records. Pretty good stuff!

Surprisingly good! As a teenager, I was into punk and thought metal was cheesy. Now I think they're both pretty cheesy but occasionally great. I love the energy of this style of thrash metal. I like the dystopian atmosphere of despair paired with some killer grooves. For this style of music, I find 30-35 mins makes the perfect album. This is about ten minutes too long - but it's a small complaint. 4*

I don't listen to a lot of thrash or metal (and related styles), but I definitely can appreciate how this kind of music is full of some amazing musicians. To make it work well at a high level, the precision is serious, serious work, and this band shows it in spades. It's as harsh in some ways as I know they mean it to be, yet I surprised myself by enjoying quite a few of the tracks. At times, the vocals make me kind of giggle a bit only because they sing like someone mocking the genre; of course, that's how parody works, I know. To my untrained ear -- as mentioned, I really don't know much about or listen to this type of music -- the tracks all started sounding the same to me, but I'm sure a more experienced listener would be able to point out for me what I'm missing. Excellent musicans, no doubt.

Having previously experienced the amazing "Roots" album, "Arise" is a near perfect example of looking back in time and seeing how a band can get better. The album is a bit rough with the band's maturity still growing, lacking the cohesively chaotic enjoyment of "Roots" but one can still hear the elements that would surely meld together years later. "Arise" is definitely the sound of a band that grew from the 80s and evolving with the 90s. The sound is the one of kids in a garage just letting it all go, except there is a noticeable discipline that can be heard and for that alone, this album is a testament to the metal genre. Overall, this is not "Roots" so there is missing a certain innovation and use of creative outlets that impacted this review's first impression, but "Arise" succeeds as a solid metal album. Guitars are full of sound rather than sounding hollow questioning whether or not a bass player exists, the percussion is disciplined, the vocals gritty yet musically sensical. This is metal as it should be, melodically intense promoting an aggressive sense of calm.

Not in the Metallica/Slayer/Megadeath/Anthrax category for me, but pretty good. I found two songs that are quite runnable for me. Definitely not for everyone and I don't love it, but I can hear some influences on bands that I do love (mainly Bring Me the Horizon and Slipknot). I had no idea these guys were Brazillian.

Yeah, with a couple of exceptions, this is a bloody good album.

A very dark album . They created an apocalyptic mood throughout the whole album . Particularly loved the title track and the Motörhead cover of Orgasmatron.

Pretty good from what I heard of it, I’ll have to listen to it a few more times though. I’ve got a feeling it’ll grow on me.

That vocal just sits in the perfect spot in the mix. Dead Embryonic Cells is as heavy as any song could get get at this time. Digging the into on Desperate Cry. However this album really feels repetitive. It doesn't go anywhere. The wild solo on Subtraction could have had more room to breathe. The Orgasmatron cover puts it into the same sonic style as the rest of the album, which felt like a chore to listen to.

Intricate metal that sounds like the start of later metal. A decent listen.

Brazillian Thrash Metal, Not my Genre I am afraid. don't see the musicality or the creativity here, just seems bland to me. I find the voice repetitive and hard to listen to too. Standard Thrash Metal 101 that I might hear from any Teenage band from the 90's. Can't pick a favourite as this would be disingenuous and I feel betray the whole point of this exercise. The only thing of any credit for me is "Orgasmatron" a cover of Lemmy and Motorhead so that shows how bad this album is! Sorry Metal fans but this is on the far end of the tolerable spectrum for me.

I like rock music, even some heavy metal, but death and thrash have always passed me by. Not my thing at all, so much so that I had to stop after the third track. I'm sure they are fine exponents of their art. but it's not my kind of art.

Much more interesting than I remembered. Thrash that's more leaning toward Pantera groove.

Technically I'm sure this is impressive, but thrash was never my thing. Boring and samey.

I previously reviewed the album Roots by Sepultura. Although that album was in some ways more creative than this one, I think Arise is the better album of the two, with more tonal consistency and arrangements that are a little more ear friendly (as far as Sepultura albums go LOL). This is high energy, thrashy music that burns. Musically it's really good, with magnificent guitars by Andreas Kisser and wicked drumming by Igor Cavalera. It's a top notch metal album. Fave Songs: Murder, Meaningless Movements, Altered State, Under Siege (Regnum Irae), Desperate Cry

A solid thrash metal album that is quite similar to Slayer's 80s albums from Reign in Blood and onwards with some Megadeth thrown into the mix. It doesn't have the same uniqueness as Sepultura's later 90s album which has stronger influences from Latin rhythm and percussion (although I am not a massive fan of the groove metal approach they take, so I prefer this), but is however still a very good album.

Too hardcore for me, couldn't make it to the end.

This is very good fun. Relentlessly fast metal that blasts you straight in the face. However, as it goes on, there is very little tonal variety - it is fun, but has the effect of eating 12 Easter eggs in a row.

You know what, I actually appreciated the musicality of the album. I suppose I’m a little more open-minded after hearing this album when it comes to heavy or death metal. But it’s still a no for me.

Arise by Sepultura (1991) Wow. Brazilian death/thrash metal with virtuoso performances by drummer Igor Cavalera and lead guitarist Andreas Kisser, and solidly paired overlay by bassist Paulo Jr. and rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera, this driving, pounding descent into nihilistic rampage is breathtaking. Blinding tempos and growly, yelling lead vocals by Max Cavalera lack variety, but hey, that’s thrash. If the first few tracks become boring, hang in there. The sixth track, “Altered State” and seventh track “Under Siege (Regnum Irae)” are nice compositions, the latter including some modest theological reflection on the hypostatic union, but with predictable results. Lyrics consist mostly of litanies nasty noun phrases, ill-connected, but all equally harrowing. One must include the ‘bonus’ closing track, a cover of Motörhead’s “Orgasmatron”, because it was included on the Brazilian release, even if not in the UK or US. It’s anti-religious kerygma that seems unaware of its internal contradictions, but it’s the only track on the album that actually has a message. Cool, but don’t let your mother catch you listening. 3/5

Finally some uplifting music. lol It's interesting that these brothers played at Rock in Rio in 1991. I expect my Rio friend's gf would have wanted to bolt a little before the band played three quarters of their set. Yeah the music is fucking noisy although I do get a small amount of enjoyment from some of the percusision and guitar playing. This and the fact it’s the time of year to be generous uplifts it.
