Corny. Couldn’t get into it.
This one feels like it deserves a deeper dive. Zany, creative, and fun, it feels like a weird mix of very dated mid-70's rock tropes and super fresh, genius ideas. It definitely grew on me as I listened.
Absolutely bizarre record with like 8 different vibes simultaneously. Absolutely baffled at the fact that this could be contemporary with other bands from the 70s and that it didn't drive past everyone else in the field.

Wall Street Shuffle was tof om weer eens te horen, gelukkig was dat ook gelijk het eerste nummer, want de rest was om snel te vergeten.

I loved this, it was a really fun listen and reminded me of some of my favorite bands. Also it was a treat finding out that “worst band in the world” was the sample used in J Dilla’s “Workinonit”
Another album that is part of the rock ecosystem from the 70s. Not outstanding, not deplorable. Just another one…
How many possible co-writing duos can the "Worst Band in the World" have: There are four of them so... 4C2 = 4!/(2!*(4-2)!) = 4!/(2!*2!) = (4*3)/2 = 6 Six pairings of Stewart, Gouldman, Godley, Creme. In just a bit more than thirty minutes, these guys went wild with the sounds of pop/rock during that time. All of the six pairings produced at least one song (Creme and Godley seem to like each other a lot, though). And with such sparse and hit-and-miss process, it's unsurprisingly a messy album. And is "Sheet Music" a shit music? Well, yes. But I think that's part of the show. Take note that they admitted being the worst band in the world. This wildly adventurous album might seem like a mediocre album trying very hard to make something unique, or to change the course of pop and rock during that time. But for me, it's just an aimless and fun fiddling with the sound. It's fragile, it's inconsistent, and it's pretty weird, and I like it. It gives one the light and carefree vibes with its stellar and playful sounds despite singing about topics like time bombs in airplanes.
Surprisingly good!
Not the greatest of albums (10cc is yet another band who, these days, is best experienced through a “best of” collection). But I like 10cc and I like their humour enough.
This one was a real slog to get through. They may not really be 'The Worst Band In The World' but they are damn far from being among the best. This album just really seems like mass-produced rock, made to fit for easy-listening radio or as representative but not too distracting background music for sappy movies. They get some creativity points for Clockwork Creep, but there too the execution is lackluster and bland. Glad to have this over with.
I honestly loved this. Such a cool sounding album, so interesting, very unique. Will hopefully put this into my normal rotation.
Help! Identity crisis! This album has ZERO focus. What is this band? Wall Street was decent and Worst Band started strong then began to sound like M&M rapping. Moving forward, they launch into Bohemian Rhapsody-ish singing. Maybe throw in some show tunes, cobbled with some state-of-the-art 1974 digital instrumentation and Steely Dan and, how 'bout some Santana and Queen? Oh! and then top it off with some Flight of the Concords and Jimmy Buffet for good measure. It's a mess and difficult to make sense of. Some of it is good, but the arrangements are high on coke and PCP. It's erratic and all too disjointed. F this!
So many artists on the 1001 that lack a cohesive identity. Does 10cc know who they are or what their style is? I don’t after one listen. “The Worst Band in the World” was annoying, “Hotel” was weird, and “Clockwork Creep” was, well not creepy, just crappy. “Silly Love” featured a metal riff behind silly singing of the word silly, then becomes a totally different song before veering back to the metal riff. More weirdness ensued for the rest of the album. They were contemporaries of Pink Floyd and Queen, and occasionally sound like either of them, occasionally hints of the Beatles, sometimes blues-rock... it's just too all over the place. And too many moments where the sound or arrangement made me laugh out loud with a wtf. I prefer artists who have more of a definable/recognizable style. They avoid the single-star review and get bumped up slightly by being an unnecessary British band on the list without having a singer with an annoying post-punk/new wave/Britpop grating British singing affectation.
The lead single "The Worst Band in the World" failed to chart. Are they they worst band in the world? Not by a long shot based on other albums included in the 1001 albums list. But just because they aren't the worst band in the world, does that make them worthy of inclusion on this list? Absolutely not.
The album started out fine with The Wall Street Shuffle. Then it fell off the cliff with the aptly named The Worst Band in the World. And it didn’t fully recover. Succinctly, this album is weird. But that’s not the whole story. There are quite a few bits and pieces that are good. But it’s always wrapped in weirdness.
Sounds like a potential influence for Of Montreal.
Sounding dated, a little whimsical in parts, but clearly talented composers, however darting about a little too much stylistically for my ear

Brilliant as usual for 10cc
This is the second pop-rock or art rock album from 10cc. Critics consider this album to be the zenith of 10cc's music career, because the band had polished their original sound and added pop into the mix. I personally liked the album and the upbeat music!
Well, I love Dreadlock Holiday & I'm not in Love (who doesn't) - but know nothing else. And to be honest I expected more. Feels very bland musically & lyrically. 1001 Greatest Albums? Really? How?
Really interesting.
McCartney-esque catchy art-pop; some of the songs ahead of their time, some are swing-and-miss. Talented musicians throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. Favorite Track: Oh Effendi Relisten: No

Sheet Music, it's not you, it's me. I can't deal with your frantic zaniness. I don't hate you, but I can't say I enjoyed my time with you either. You are extremely not my thing, and that's okay. It's great even.
Beyond wack pop rock boat dad bullshit
Pretty cool. Not really too much me, but appreciated it more than other old music. It's starting to get more appealing.

After the first two tracks, I'm amused and enjoying this. Funny, musically interesting (if not super original), and quite enjoyable so far. Got some laughs and got my feet moving at the office. A few more tracks in and really enjoying this. Some inventive stuff here, vocals and instruments and styles. Humor and seriousness but in a light vein. Read some of the history of the band, I get where some of this stuff came from. It's great. Clockwork Creep is hilarious and dark. I really enjoyed this album, every tune.
Previously unfamiliar with this band, until I got to Worst Band in the World and immediately recognized the Workinonit sample J Dilla used! Love when that shit happens! Anyways, the music is not typically "my thing", but its fun, almost self aware hokiness makes it a rather enjoyable listen. It veers all over the place in the best way an album from a British band in the 70s could only pull off this well and have it still feel like a cohesive album. The album seems to get more interesting the deeper you get into it or maybe it just suffers from having such a shuffley blues groove song to open it, but that is of the time, I suppose. Probably, wanted to open with something that wouldn't scare folks off right away with something too "weird" and unfamiliar. I'll delve into more of their stuff for sure.
I liked that every song sounded different and some of the lyrics were funny.

Did not know what to expect but I ended up adding three songs to my favorites. Especially loved Oh Effendi, Baron Samedi, and Clockwork Creep.

Though this is more of a pop record, it has the kind of creative songwriting I wish was more prevalent in prog. Would probably give it a 5 if I was more familiar with it.
Pleasant but bit too precious for me.
starts off strong with The Wall Street Shuffle + The Worst Band in the World (s/o j. dilla), but the theatric absurdness gets old after a while. Like listening to a bunch of worse versions of Bohemian Rhapsody. Still interesting to have such narrative woven into rock instrumentation.
Every song is different. And that's what I respect.

What a strange album. I've heard of 10cc, but in my mind they were a hard rock band. For some reason in my head I have them associated with Thin Lizzy. But this is more like a rock opera, reminiscent of Meatloaf, Alan Parsons Project, or Queen. With maybe a little Steely Dan mixed in. So it was very surprising, but I can't say I enjoyed it much at all. Too cutesy and clever, but ultimately not very satisfying. 2 stars.
Very impressive and idiosyncratic art rock album. You can hear The Beach Boys influence and pop songwriting elements that would be incorporated into much of Paul McCartney’s early to mid 80s output. This band has both a pop sensibility and an avant garde sensibility that blend quite well on this album.

This is a tough one to score. I had never listened to this before and I have listened to a small amount of 10CC. I thought some songs were amazing, early 70s glam tinged weirdness, while others were a bit ho-hum. I did give it another listen and explore the band some more
Sheet Music by 10cc (1974) This what you might call zany British pop, nostalgic for some, perhaps, but if you’ve never heard it before (like me), you’re likely to not like it. It’s very experimental, and most of the experiments fail. It’s hard to take a record seriously that seems to laugh at itself. “We’re the worst band in the world”, they giggle. They exaggerate, of course, but that’s part of the joke. 1/5
Oddly, I know the cover for this album was photographed 5 minutes from my old home, just off Wood Green high street in North London, despite never having listened to it! I know Wall Street Shuffle and The Worst Band in the World. Both are very arch, and tight musically. I like both of these things, so they are off to a good start! Hotel is also great - like Dreadlock Holiday, years ahead of its time at laughing at cultural appropriation, while culturally appropiating. Old Wild Men is a little less good, very nice sounding but lacking the fun bite of the first three songs. Silly Love is just okay. Somewhere in Hollywood has a very OTT, musical type energy to it. Again, that works for me. And then goes to some dated, but undeniably funny gags about how shady Hollywood is. Actually, given Weinstein et Al, possibly not that dated. However, the fact it's followed by the embarrassing exoticism of Baron Samedi, which is possibly one degree less awkward than Ian Fleming's writing about the same suggests that parts of this album's humour, which is largely a blessing, have aged like urine rather than wine. Thankfully it picks up again for the last two tracks, especially Oh Effendi, which manages to both satirise and be better than the Eagles at their own game. This could easily have been a five star album had it not aged so badly (and possibly if I didn't view 10cc as a slightly less good Sparks). I may be harsh hear, but bear in mind that I have only given one 70s album more than three stars so far, and this is the first to do this well. A lot of the supposed 'canon' of the 1970s is bloated and dull, and this is very much not. Tight, fun and punchy.

I was up late last night watching a documentary about why birds fly in a V formation and it occurred to me that I've hated 10cc for most of my adult life. In contrast to the birds trying to conserve energy, I was wasting mine with unfathomable hatred of this band. I kicked a cat to death after I heard them on the radio, I pushed a little girl off a swing after I heard her humming...I raped a elderly cancer patient I an unrelated incident. I need to conserve energy now and end the hate. Having said that, I just listened to this album today and have strangled a toddler to the point they turned blue.
The Worst Band in the World. (It's the name of one of the songs, lads) It was okay I think, wasn't paying attention really. Remember a couple of interesting parts. I'm confused about the while thing. Let's say, if it was a footballer, it'd be, I don't know, Lewis Dunk? Yeah, Lewis Dunk.

There were a few amusing moments, but I wasn't really into it.
I didn't find anything about this original or particularly interesting.
I’m not usually one to complain about creativity and variety on an album, but in this case, they sound like a different band every song. It gets to the point where it sounds spoofy and contrived; like a cover band that plays everything from Metallica to Bob Marley to Frank Sinatra.
Initially I thought the songs on this album were too frenetic and whimsical, with too many ideas crammed into each song. But then it seemed to settle down or maybe I got used to the pace. I recognize Wall Street shuffle from back in the day when Toronto Alt-rock station CFNY used to have it on heavy rotation and I appreciate the very witty lyrics. Creme and Godley obviously had loads of talent and that was going to become more evident in their later albums: eg The Original Soundtrack (with I’m not in love and Life is a minestrone), Deceptive Bends and Bloody Tourists that features my fav 10CC song, Dreadlock Holiday. This album is a solid 3 from me
Coming right after Cohen was always going to be a challenge but this one doesn't really land for me.
Classic from my teens
A fun and tongue-in-cheek LP that sounds surprisingly modern. Some of the slide guitar lines remind me of Ratatat for how trebly and rhythmic they are.

I dig the humour these guys use in their tunes, cheeky wordplay, musical gags and the like. Obviously very skilful musicians. I'm a huge fan of their eerie song 'I'm not in Love', so got excited when their band turned up on my list here. I enjoyed the ride. Definitely a band I need to investigate further.

Not my bag. Creative, yes, but in the same way that some art can be creative yet not entertaining. Too much of a prog rock vibe for me.

Really liked this record. Kind of pop, but in no way conventional. Great musicianship, interesting ideas and themes. Glad I listened to this and definitely keen to check out some more, as I only knew the hits previously.

This is great. It's super funky and happy. I'm really grooving. Wow, what a revelation. I really liked how this record blended poppy and experimental. I find that there's usually one or two songs on albums this old that really do not age nicely, but I didn't feel that with this one.
Personally, I prefer the albums that come after this. However, this album isn't bad in its own right. It's got an overall loud, bombastic feeling to it, but each song brings something different to the table while keeping that impression. Favorite track: The Wall Street Shuffle

Quirky
It was pretty good. A lot more enjoyable than I thought a 10cc album would be. The songwriting was really fun, and I enjoyed the instrumentation. Highlights: 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6.

Hard to decide between a 3 or a 4 for this one, but this was so much better than I expected.
Cool easy album with catchy music that makes you smile
On first listen, this album sounds like a self indulgent mess - an in joke that the audience just aren’t in on. But after a few listens you start to appreciate the music (the synths are horrible) and some is even catchy - The Wall Street Shuffle, Oh Effendi - although Hotel sounds pretty offensive to today’s ears, even if the band think they are being satirical.
Solid album to own on vinyl
This was an interesting one! I liked Wall Street Shuffle, Worst Band in the World, and Old Wild Men best.
It was okay. I was not a fan of the album composition.
An idiosyncratic prog/art rock album. Felt like someone gave Queen some ADHD medicine to keep them from really letting loose. And I think that's why it didn't really work well for me, I wanted the unhinged grandiose leaps that Queen songs and albums have. And you can hear the foundations for said jump but they never seemed to fully commit and take that extra leap to put it over the top. So it became in album where a lot of times I was excited for what might come and yet, the pay off never did come around.
I am a fan of 10cc so this album was fun to listen to. My favorite from the album was “The Wall Street Shuffle” everything was well played but not typically something I would add to a cue very often.
This album really exposes the problem with the 5 star system. It's better than all the other 4s, but is it a stone cold classic 5/5 album? It's very silly, funny, excellently performed and recorded and is very prescient about the Hollywood casting couch 40 years before #metoo. It had me bopping and smiling the whole way through. It was fucking good. 5 stars, damn.
This band sounds lost. Inconsistent sounds make it feel like the album is all over the place which in some ways is represented in their humorous lyrics over very serious sounds at times but also very light sounds at times. Could be talented, but they haven’t put it altogether in a way that shows confidence.
Some really fantastic production. 10cc always seem to have fun and this album was no different. They don’t take themselves too seriously and I think that opens up some creative fun that turns out really good sometimes. Highlights were Hotel and Old Wild Men.

Comedy? Humorous anyways. Definitely interesting, feels like a precursor to some of the more off the wall things that Queen was executing later in the decade.
J'ai d'abord écouté cet album alors que je roulais sur mon skateboard en direction de la poste pour y déposer une lettre RAR. Autant vous dire que le bruit des roues sur le bitume a totalement pris le dessus sur ce qui sortait de mes écouteurs. J'ai donc réécouté le projet une fois rentré chez moi. Croyez-le ou non, mais je n'ai pas le moindre souvenir de ce qu'il contenait.
Kinda thriving actually. Reminds me of something my step-dad would listen to in a good way. Hotel gave me lower pitched beach boys energy for some reason (i hope you guys are appreciating my notes because i like writing them hehe)

I may have heard of this band, but only maybe. This was new music for me. There were some elements that reminded me of some progressive rock that I have listened to. In the end, I was left trying to decide if I didn't like the album or if I just didn't know what to do with the album. "Clockwork Creep" and "Baron Samedi" fit somewhere in between weird and strange. 2.5 rounds up to 3 stars I guess.
I was excited at the opening guitar riff, but then it got very weird. Wasn't really a fan of the silly vocals at first. Buuut then it won me over with some clever lyrics. 3 it is!
Very clever and quirky - like an early 70s version of XTC. As usual, the singles stand out, though I've always liked 'The worst band in the world', too. Otherwise it just drifted past me.
It Was ok
Too clever - maybe. But this album is great fun. Playful lyrics, good harmonies and bold chunky guitars.
As I listened to more tracks I could see there was some complexity to these arrangements that were not boring. I don’t love the ironic tongue in cheek style but I can see its appeal. Seems to fall in with bands like POTUSOA, Barenaked Ladies, or maybe Tenacious D.
I really like it but it is 70s so like I am more likely to enjoy it Final Thoughts: 4/5

There's nothing wrong with this other than it sounds quite of its time. I just can't believe that this can be considered amongst the best albums ever.

One of the best albums I owned in the 70s
It's fucking weird and I love it! Not one bad song on the album. It has a zany quality that you don't see everyday. I'm definitely buying this. Way ahead of their time.
Wow! Why have I not listened to 10cc before? I had in my head that they were cheesy soft rock, which they kind of are. But this has great, quirky new wave energy. Musicianship and songwriting are solid throughout, and the whole thing is fun without being flimsy. It's like XTC doing hard rock covers of the Beach Boys. 5/5 what a revelation.

Musically impressive, particularly 'The Wall Street Shuffle' and 'The Sacro Iliac'. The lyrics don't convey any sincerity about anything though, if they improved this they could have been Stockport's answer to The Eagles.

Baron Samedi is like 10cc saw Soul Sacrifice by Santana at Woodstock and were like “let’s do that but add some boring parts so we don’t get sued.” Oh Effendi = lynyrd skynyrd I wonder if the Runaways jacked the opening of Silly Love for Cherry Bomb

Eiköhän kaikki 70-luvun brittirokkibändit ole jatkaneet Beatlesin jalan jäljissä omin maustein ja vaikuttein. En jaksanut Sheet Musicia kuin puolitoista kuuntelukertaa. Ei ollut levyn vika, vaan piti urakoida muita rästiin jääneitä levyjä.
hits hard with those first notes, hope it keeps up. Kinda turns into beatles light mixed with Nilsson after a while. Which is nice enough, just not as bold as first sip implied. As they say in the Sacro-Iliac, "I've never been freaky or funky". Good coffee shop music if you can handle lyrics while you're working.

Highlights: The Wall-Street Shuffle, Somewhere in Hollywood, Baron Samedi, The Sacro-Iliac Self-deprecation is one thing, I feel like The Worst Band In The World is just trying to get ahead of criticism that may or may not come. For what it's worth, only some is warranted...I feel like they're trying too hard to evoke a \"who cares\" image. The Wall Street Shuffle opens aggressively and legitimately rocks. Somewhere In Hollywood is a journey filled with misdirection and broken expectations, feels a bit like a Supertramp ditty. The driving beat and tom-toms of Baron Samedi are fun and bouncy. The Sacro-Iliac is silly, yet disjointed (see what I did there?) with a Bob Denver sound and clever lyrics (\"The lush on the floor isn't me anymore\"). Spoiler alert: The album ends abruptly with \"There's no more goodies in the pipeline\"

10cc have about fifty ideas per track, some of which work. A lot of them are irritating, however, and their kitchen sink approach gets in the way of creating fun, memorable songs people might actually enjoy. The guitar tones are aggressively shitty, and something about these guys always feels slightly racist?

At first, I loved the music and hated the vocals and lyrics. As the album went on, it grew on me. I really enjoyed this by the end of it. "Hotel" is fun. This was a pleasant surprise. Listening to it made me think these guys had a lot of fun making this album.

Pleasant surprise. Lots of irony and different perspectives in the lyrics, experimental music choices. I expected some dated generic rock like Deep Purple, but this had spunk. 3.5 but rounding up to 4 on the rating because I expected this to suck so much and it didn't.

I’m glad I listened to this album if for no other reason than to learn that, but most of these songs sound like the tracks you skip on later Queen records. “Somewhere in Hollywood” was the standout for me. “Her beauty looks out like a trailer. Norman Mailer waits to nail her.” Out of Kanye’s mouth that would have been hot fire.
I always thought 10cc was a reggae band because all I knew was Dreadlock Holiday. This album is all over the place, wild variety of songs and genres (eg folk, musicals, comedy songs, glam rock ?? ). I knew the hook from "The worst band in the world", it must have been sampled on something decent (found it - J Dilla Workinonit) , but the rest of the song is muck. Wtf is this, it's mad, the lyrics especially. How does this shit make it onto a list of definitive albums, and yet theres so few iconic releases from the last 10 years or from genres outside dad rock, eg dance music. I got to the second last song and just couldn't take anymore.

Wow, where to begin with this album. I fucking love it, it doesn't take itself too seriously, but the instrumentals and composition are fantastic, and transitions really well like with "Old Wild Men" and "Hotel", this is one brit rock band that I loved and had never heard of them, NO NOTES!

Some of these songs are idiotic I the best way, "Worst Band..." "Hotel". Some excellent guitar sounds. It sounds like they are having fun. I enjoyed it, and it made me curious to listen to more from these guys. From Wikipedia, sounds like they were really in stride for about 5 albums in the 70's.
Glad I didn’t skip this one. I was not expecting this at all. Such a fun and strange style of rock...or pop...or idk what it is. It’s very good and considering the year (74) i was surprised by the sound.
Gave it a couple tries over weeks, couldn't find the genius I was told was there but there were grooves
It starts off like some classic, classic British rock album (that somehow slipped under my radar for 30+ years) but shifts towards a pretty unique sound -- some yacht rock, Queen-esque 'hard prog rock', a little psychadelic, and even some showtune-y vibes.

Really like 10cc and think they are underrated. Love how they work experimentation and humor into pop music. Fav track is worst band in the world.
First song title... had promise. It's alright, a little hammy though. I like a lot of instrumentally what's going on here, but the lyrics and vocal contents drop it a point for me. Has potential, but not jiving with the result.
I had not listened to this album before. I like the band10cc. From this album I only knew the song The Wall Street Shuffle. Some songs surprised me positively. But the 10cc sound was already there and was recognizable. The album was nice to listen to.

Reminded me of Rush or other prog rock
Not a band I was very familiar with - but it's good. Feels like it would be the most pop rock album during its time, but now it's just a fun rock. Has an almost manic energy in a way that's similar to Les Claypool (Clockwork Creep). Somewhere in Hollywood has a riff used in a Bond film theme. The Sacro-Iliac almost has crosby, stills, nash, & young harmonies. Really enjoyed this album

Was a decent listen. Nice, short and tight timing. Worst Band in the World is sampled on J Dilla's Donuts so that was nice to catch.
Funky and weird. Went from sounding like The Who to sounding like The Beatles. Really great recommendation.

albums good. apparently its progressive pop. i dont really know wtf prog pop is still but this album is poppy and it is pretty progressive so i can kinda get it. theres a lot of sudden stylistic switch-ups and weird song structures here, probly best illustrated in the opening three tracks (which is also my fav stretch of the album). the first two are filled with all sorts of different stylistically clashing sections that are really interesting together, and the third one is just kind of a breezy beachy tune with a long ambient intro. pretty much every track is unique. cool stuff! this sorta 70s classic rock sound is growing (back) on me tbh. im sure ive mentioned it before but i rly appreciate this site for like actively forcing me to listen 2 this shit lol
