Reviews (page 12 of 14)
First time going through a Duran Duran album in full. Strangely enough. I think they've got great songs, but I also believe I've enjoyed other bands' covers of them more than I seem to enjoy the real deal. Even so, there's good stuff on here. Doesn't drag on either.
Honestly there are some hidden bangers in this record that a like a lot
Not all the songs are good, but those that are, are very good
Duran Duran epitomizes 80s music. Two very well known songs. The other songs are alright.
Ochentero. Fácil de escuchar, con buenas melodías. Muy pop inglés
Meh. Ok, and mercifully short, but not great. Hungry like the wolf and save a prayer the best songs, but still no better than average.
I knew Hungry Like the Wolf, but that’s just boring compared to some of the other tracks. The bass lines are especially notable.
Completely Duran ! Not a huge fan but it was listenable. 3*
Bit of a classic and holds up better than expected.
Decent 80s pop, but not much more than that. It has been a minute since I last listened to Duran Duran, but I did recognise some of the singles. The other songs seem rather forgettable.
I didn’t realize how groovy the bass was on this album. The Chauffeur was a new track for me and a favorite. I dig DD, but I don’t see myself listening to this end-to-end very often.
Good, glossy 80s pop. Don't think I'll be putting it back on any time soon though. The singles are definitely the stand out tracks.
3.5

Fun but didn't love, lyrics weak and lyrics of hungry like the wolf j cringe
I enjoyed it but it seemed very much a cocaine fueled product of its time.
Hungry like the wolf saves the album
Fun album but a little too 80s for my taste
Schlicht-eleganter Ring auf dessen gegen Ende 3 funkelnde Brillanten eingelassen thronen („Last Chance on the Stairway“, „Save a Prayer“ & „The Chauffeur“) Patrick Bateman gibt mehr als 2.8
The songs are catchy, but they're sort of like candy - they taste good but there's no substance. The lyrics are inane if you really listen to them, the melodies simplistic. I don't think this belongs on an albums you must hear before you die list. Not a bad album, but certainly not one of the all-time greats either. 3 stars.
Very 80s, not a bad thing just definitely embodies the sound of that decade.
Fairly middle of the road (even for new wave). Simon Le Bon does not do it for me, and a fair bit of this album melds into itself. Started to get interesting around The Chauffeur - unfortunately the last track. Choice cuts: Lonely In Your Nightmare, New Religion, The Chauffeur
I know hungry like the wolf but never heard the rest. It's pretty catchy and well written. It could definitely be called new wave but it's much better than that. I feel like so often something is listed as new wave here to boost its chances, whereas in this case that label is gonna hold it back. The entire album got a bit samey but I'd happily listen to it again. 3/5.
Not my scene. But dig a few songs
Decent, felt a bit formulaic at times but still a great synthpop-rock record.
Catchy. Even the weaker songs had something. I really enjoyed it but it's cheesy pop at the end of the day so it can't be more than a 3 from me
So very 80s. A fun album.
signature sounds of the 80s in my opinion. All of them are fine songs, but I don't think it's something that I would choose to listen to pretty often.
The 80s were wild man, with a unique sound. This album is squarely 80s, but in a good way. The prominent bass driven rhythms throughout, like New Religion, are refreshing, and I enjoy them quite a bit. Rio comes alive at the chorus, which is catchy and much better than the rest of the song. I don’t completely understand why, but I have to point out that parts of the bass line in Lonely in Your Nightmare sound like an underwater recording of whales communicating. Hungry Like a Wolf is solid while Save a Prayer is ambling and soulless. I can see how this album put them on the map.
Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf and the cover art are definitely the standouts here. Mostly enjoyable though.
Classic 80s stuff
An 80s staple with lots of singles. Can’t help but sing along.
''save a prayer'' has a nice melody, really like that song seems like the album becomes better as it goes on ''the chauffeur'' is very enjoyable
Dat Rio bassline doe
Duran Duran delivers an energetic and nostalgic sound with this pop rock album. You can easily dance to this music or simply play it in the background while working on something else.
A few of the songs sounded the same
So very 80s
Bit of a weird one cos on paper I should love it but there's something about Duran Duran that I just can't get on board with. Some undoubted classics on this album and it should be a 5star, but I can't tell if it's Le Bon or the seriousness with which they take themselves but I'll have to give it 3 in light of not being able to give it 3.5
Ok
A fan of this group
Listening to the first track of Rio, my heart sank. The musicianship is such that I can't simply dismiss it with a few insults. I'm going to have to listen to the whole damned thing. The rhythm section of John and Roger Taylor is precise and specific. Whether it's the busy and intricate baselines on the title cut or the slap bass on My Own Way, bassist John Taylor is undeniably competent and has a full, punchy sound. Roger Taylor's grooves are original and so solid they could be carved out of marble. Nick Rhoded' synth washes and arpeggiations aren't slapdash--they're calculated as hell. Guitarist Andy Taylor mostly played a supporting role here: he either plays soaring harmonic lines or plays rhythm. These tunes are arranged within an inch of their lives. As much of a piece as the album is, each individual song is its own distinct entity. Guest artist Andy Hamilton's sax lines may be improvised, but they sound sculpted. I can't even dismiss the songwriting, which is replete with hooks, even on non-hits like the title cut, not to mention the instant earworm of Hungry Like The Wolf, which was inescapable back in the early 80s. And yet, oh how I hate this record! Singer Simon Lebon has the protypical 80s pasty croon down pat. The synths are horrid, and yet they fit this chintzy material like a glove. The sax breaks are nauseatingly wimpy. The whole package strikes me as unbearably insipid. Maybe part of what makes me hates Rio so much is what this kind of music represents to me: mindless consumerism, materialism, fashion over substance, etc. And yet, on its own disgusting terms, Duran Duran's Rio is a roaring success. Excuse me while I vomit.
3.3
nostalgic. I remember hearing Duran Duran blaring out of my sisters room for many years! Good stufff
it was ok, not my style
A few songs really stood out to me as being enjoyable and meaningful (esp. You're Own Way and Lonely in Your Nightmare), but the rest didn't stick with me.
A ton of respect for this album, the rock and blues sound was impressive and the moving bass line sounded great.
this is the kind of new wave that I am not crazy about
A lively 80s pop album with two great hits: Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf. Perfect for catching some energy.
It’s fine
Fun album. It sounds like summer to me.
I didn’t listen to much of it wasn’t in that mood 😅
3 - nette 80er klänge
Hungry like the wolf was trash as expected. Other songs were a pleasant surprise. The coordination between many of the instruments was excellent. Save a prayer, new religion and my own way were particular highlights.
Seminole 80s New Romantic pop. Love the driving, funky bass throughout. Hated these guys in the 80s and for good reason - they had it all.
Fun 80s bops
Fun little album. Nothing special, and pretty short, but aight.
Good, but not memorable outside the big hits. Some great new wave sounds, though
Pure 80s, some great punchy bass lines.
Funky, good to listen in the backyard, but nothing extraordinary. The Chauffer, and New Religion highlights for me.
This album is ultra gay, but slaps like a mofo
2.7
Enjoyed it more than I expected to
The back half of the album was solid - first half was uneven aside from the two well-known hits. I was surprised by how much I liked "Hold Back the Rain" and "New Religion."
Funkier than expected
poppy
Was fine, but thats all - I feel indifferent to it.
Was a bit boring..
Love the hits
It's a disappointing revelation, but I've gotta say that I'm not a big fan of Duran Duran. Feels good to get that off my chest. I really just don't vibe with the style, and even the big hitters on this album didn't do it for me. Sorry! Favourites: Hungry Like The Wolf The Chauffer
I’m no Bonnie Prince Charlie but the songs are catchy!
okay
Can’t quite say these guys were in the right place, right time, with the right looks and sound or what. My general memory of them was thanks to MTV but also teenage babysitters who fawned over the DD fellas. As such, The Reflex aside, I found them kinda silly. And still do today. Which is not unfair, but there is just enough craft going on here where you can hear them pulling from glam, Eno’s myriad guitar collaborators, funk, and tossing in their own thing via the vocal approach that while none of it is especially novel, they had good taste. Rio itself feels a bit like 3 good-to-great singles and the rest of their set padding out the album. Not a whole lot there, ultimately, which is largely how I remember their subsequent albums. Anyhow, good for them.
Probably the oldest album where I fell asleep on the first track. 2/5
Quiff wave had its moments but Rio wasn't one of them for me.'Hungry Like the Wolf' and 'Save a Prayer' are ok as pop tunes but the rest, meh.
not my style
This is the first album to start the journey!
Review - better than I expected tbh given Duran Duran's rep as terrible 80s yuppie pop but also only really liked the singles/songs I'd heard before. Score - 5/10 Need to listen? YES
Fair enough, Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf have survived the years but this is a synthy, poppy album of its day. It doesn’t merit replaying almost 45 years later. The record had a place in the early 80s but can’t claim classic status, the songs aren’t particularly brilliant and the music is unremarkable.
I am aware of Duran Duran. This came out when I was a junior in high school. Songs like "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" were VERY popular on MTV. It just didn't grab me at the time. Truth be told it was the kind of album that all the girls liked (or so it seemed) but I can't recall any guys liking this. It just seemed like they were all about the videos and the image, while the music seemed pretty forgettable to me. I wonder if this will grow on me after not listening to any of it for over 40 years. Or if I will discover good deep cuts that weren't the big hits - since I never sat down and listened to it front to back. As an example, I didn't really get into The Cure very much when they were first out - but now I like a lot of their stuff. Thoughts after listening 3 times... The slick dancy/poppy/synthy stuff is really not grabbing me - which is basically the first 7 songs. Were they all on massive amounts of cocaine when they made this? Seems like it. His voice is also annoying. I ended up liking the last 2 songs - "Save a Prayer" (which I now remember was one of the hit songs from this) and "The Chauffer". I think mostly because they are a little more atmospheric in sound - compared to the rest of the songs on the album. "The Chauffer" actually sounds the least like anything else on this record - but it's the one I like the most. Did they go in this direction with songs on subsequent albums? It's too bad - because I was hoping to rediscover an overlooked band. Just didn't happen. Liked songs on Spotify: 2/9 Rating: 2/5
5/10 - too 80s pop for me, it doesn't have some catchy beats but I think you would have to have grown up with this
Not for me
181. ok
Catchy songs, an album of them odd a little too much for me
..
nothing really interesting about this album
pretty basic 80s music, nothing special, boring voice shouting 4/10
It has something, made me wanna dance. But it did not really catch me
Never a fan and after listening to this I remember why. Looks great, fantastic videos, slick A&R, just veneer. Save A Prayer and The Chauffeur apart, they just blend. No 1. Save A Prayer 2. The Chauffeur 3. Rio
Some memorable songs, but too Eighties to be timeless.
Top : My Own Way Flop : Lonely in Your Nightmare
I don’t blame people who still vibe with Duran Duran, but this is just not my cup of tea. I’m not even sure it’s tea at all… more like space juice. I appreciate the attention given to lyrics on this album, and it’s technically impressive, but the production is way too much for my taste, and most of these songs should have been a minute shorter. My favorite song is definitely Rio. I think the hook and melody there are the strongest.
Vapid 80s pop from MTV darlings; Duran Duran. An arrogant pretty-boy band, that was far more concerned with image rather than substance.
Fete basslinjer. Men ikke helt min greie. Veldig busy.
It's a 2.75. I thought I'd like it more
Sehr 80er vibe.
the singles were good. the others were synth-y, whiny british voice junk
Dated and not in a good way.
Very 80's in a good way
Could just be one big song honestly, although Rio and Hungry like a wolf are iconic by themselves.
favs: hungry like the wolf last chance on the stairway save a prayer the chauffeur rating 2.3/5
While it did not make my ears bleed, it certainly didn't make them super happy. Some elements were fine, even enjoyable but overall it was just glossy new wave from a group who is a bit high on their own supply. 2.5🌟
Hated them then, feeling no kinder now.
Expected to like this but honestly found it really mid except for a few songs
Standouts Rio Hungry Like the Wolf
ugh, on track 3 and I want to punch something (in a bad way). Me no likey. Every time I hear music like this I wonder how anyone ever intentionally listened to it and then I remember cocaine exists. I think 80s synth pop may be my least favourite genre of music (that and Rush, is Rush a genre?). Each track starts with sounds that seem like some THX sound test to show you how well your speakers can work.
I remember this from the early days of MTV. I always liked Save a Prayer. I remember hearing that song for the first time on the radio driving by myself late at night. I don't really like the rest of this album though. Did not really like this type of music back in the early 80s.
I had Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf on my iPod Nano when I was 11 or 12 yrs old. I think you gotta be that age and have heavy boomer influence in your life to enjoy this. Or be my mom. Idk. Simon Le Bon is incredibly annoying. Rhythm section kills it in some of these tracks tho. And Save a Prayer is pretty good.
This is good 80s music but i honestly only made it 3/4 of the way through and got so bored i had to listen to something else. A lot of these songs follow a similar structure and it gets repetitive and old quite fast
This hasn’t aged well. It is very much of its time. It’s kind of uninteresting and bland. Nothing ground breaking even for 1982. Depeche Mode and New Order were far more compelling.
I didn’t mind it but, barring the singles, it didn’t offer much.
1980's funny haircuts. Slick synthetic pop indicative of a lot of 80's popular music. I just don't hear any soulfulness at all. Leaves me flat.
very 80s: didn’t love
Redelijk
this one’s okay, and i tend to like the tracks that haven’t been overplayed a million times more. they do really know how to make melodies that stick in your head, but yeah i’m drawn more to lonely in your nightmare (nice guitar! it’s giving the eurythmics album from the year before), save a prayer, and the chauffeur (which is kinda kooky but i like it idk!).
Tried to like it. Not my thing.
The hits are fun in familiar ways. The rest is tedious.
I've long been of the opinion that the 80's is my absolute least favourite decade of music, and listening to this album certainly did not convince me otherwise. The music here is of such little substance it may as well just slip through your fingers, just track after track of corny meandering bullshit. That being said, I did find myself enjoying the last couple of tracks a bit more, especially the slower pace of the last two tracks was a really refreshing change of pace, and the extended instrumental outro of The Chauffer provided a shockingly enjoyable and satisfying end to the album. Despite my overall reservations however, I do believe this album deserves its spot on the list. It might not be for me but it absolutely is a defining album for its time and should be a must listen for anyone wanting to understand music's evolutions into the 80s. Shockingly there are numerous other albums on the 1001 list of similar or even worse quality that cannot make such a claim. Favorite Track: 9 - The Chauffer Best Three Track Run: 7, 8, 9
(62/100)
2.5
Did not grab me, probably sounded good in the early 80's
idk this one doesnt resonate with me at all im not giving 1 star because it is listenable but i feel complete indifference about it, good bass sound and some synths here and there if i have to say something positive
i just don’t love it. it kinda creeps me out bc of that netflix doc.
Not as terrible as I was expecting. Some tracks were even OK. But I can't rid myself of the anger I felt at the time.
This list has just really made me realize how much I dislike 80s music. Did I say that already? I did like a couple of the songs here, though. I’m sure the guys from the band are totally fine with me not being into them.
It was fine.
Very generic 80’s synth pop, there is really only 1 song on this album I like which is also the one everyone knows, it’s listenable but very boring
Hungry like the wolf I'm on the hunt, I'm after you bij zulke dingen cringe ik helemaal weg.
😐
If processed cheese formed a band... Utterly without a trace of anything genuine. Completely without passion or emotion. The instrumental tracks are good enough. The synth is pleasant in a retro 80s way although someone could have suggested trying something other than the arpeggiator. The bass playing is the star of the show. They seem to be aspiring to Stranded - Siren - Avalon period Roxy Music, but don't really get there. And then there's the vocals. Words are sung. Words of such banality and triteness, dressed up as big statements and emoted in Simon Le Bon's melodramatic whine. 3 stars for the playing -1 for the songs and singing.
It’s funny I was looking forward to listening to this one, however I realised I only like one track on here which is the excellent “Save a Prayer”, Simon le Bon’s voice - I don’t like
This album encapsulates the sound of its generation. It has huge radio hits and very catchy melodies, but this isn't my favourite period of pop music.
I have tried so hard to like their music over the years. I don't know what I'm missing. Maybe the part of the human brain that develops an appreciation for this particular brand of 80s synth-pop never finished cooking for me. Meh
I liked this a lot more decades ago, it’s solid synth pop but doesn’t excite me much at the moment. Maybe I have heard it too much years ago.
Some good melodies, especially Rio. Victim of drums machines making it sound dated. Overall good musicianship. Have a hard time getting into drum machine 80s rock pop. Hungry like a wolf good song.
I remember liking this quite a bit when I was a kid, but not much remains for me 40 years later. There are two strong singles and the rest is largely forgettable. The bass player is much ballyhooed and he delivers. The production is incredibly pristine, which is impressive, but ultimately it’s not an album I’ll reach for.
Really here for one song
Música de chavorruco de los 80s
This kind of 80s pop is very much not my cup of tea generally. This is alright, although I did find myself switching off listening and each song just blended into the next, the album just passed by. Ok, but not for me really.
Nostalgic for sure. They never were my favorite band though. Not my jam.
Fun nostalgia for that girl I used to know named Rio after the song. Some recognizable songs but wouldn't seek out to listen again. Just too electronic for my vibe.
So eightees, not really my thing
1. rio - 1.5 2. uuay - 1.5 3. lonely - 1.5 4. uuolf - 2.5 5. rain - 1 6. religion - 1 7. chance - 1 8. prayer - 1.5 9. chaffeur - 1
I thought this would an enjoyable 80s-pop journey, but aside from the hits . . . meh. And the hits aren't even THAT good.
Last chance on the stairway, that’s the best track on this album in my opinion.
Ok
meh
An ok album, and I get why they were super popular 40 years ago, and why they aren't anymore. It sounds dated, and eventhough some songs are still fun today, I was not blown away in any way
I like more Duran Duran album 1993
Duran Duran was not a band that I enjoyed all that much. I would rate this their best album, but for me, I really only thought much of two of the songs. To me, it's a solid 2.5, but we'll see how I grade it when it comes time.
I’m getting sick of this site
All these songs sound the same
Fine…. a little underwhelming and forgettable. Not much to say. One favorite track added before listening to the album in its entirety, still holds up: the chauffeur
2.0 stars New wave music rarely does it for me. and this album is no exception. it's fine, it's not awful by any means, just doesn't interest me. I find myself not paying attention to the lyrics on this album...so I just assume they're mostly about beautiful blonde women. Favrorite track: Lonely In Your Nightmare
Not my thing.
Certainly a different listen for me as I’ve never fully explored 80s New Wave. Seems hard to fully appreciate without the context of the time in music. But I’m giving it an honest listen, and a lot of that sound just isn’t for me…but it’s still really fun at times. The overly 80s sound just is very dated. The less poppy sounding stuff is somehow maybe better? I like Lonely in Your Nightmare. Alright I lied, some of this is really fun. I view this as pop, not really a “rock” sound. But is it catchy. Hungry Like the Wolf sounds like every 80s music background soundtrack…in a good way? Overall, a fun listen at times, but not necessarily a sound I would regularly return to. I was pretty bored and over it after a few songs. It’s on the border of a 2-3/5 for me. Certainly a snapshot in time. Feels like you can play this and say: this is what the 80s sounded like to a lot of people. Not necessarily bad things, but not sure it’s necessarily a vital listen as an entire album.
In the end, ita like others classics that dont are impactful anymore. Its well done, but ita no something to look for again.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The singles and hits are obviously catchy and boppy but the rest of it felt slightly empty. You could see why Duran Duran were as big as they were, and hear how they influenced a certain rock-pop sound in this era. Or were they influenced by it? I don’t know enough about them to distinguish. Rio’s fun. Probably won’t listen to it again.
Meh
A little bit too much party going on here. Great artwork, and vocal performances are wonderful. I would much rather listen to the Cure or Depeche Mode.
2.5/5 - Unique voice, coolish instrumental, but background music in my ears. Nothing really pulled me in.
I wanted to like this a lot moreI wanted to like this a lot more. More than anything else, I was just kind of... annoyed? It's got some obvious bangers, but none of the other tracks grabbed me. 5/10s bangers, but none of the other tracks grabbed me. 5/10
2.5
Not for me, but not awful.
80's synth pop.. how is this so highly rated? It ages poorly and is musically not that interesting. Hungry like the wolf and save a prayer are the only OK songs, largely because of how catchy they are whick ok fair but top 1000? ugh 80's
Rio instrumental was cool The songs are really repetitive Save a prayer is maybe the best Or the chauffer
first impressions: personally I despise it but it's not really that bad. Not my kind of kitsch. maybe if I approach through a gothic lens I'd enjoy it better.
This album sounds like the 80s as a decade trying to figure itself out. I don't like the hits enough to over compensate for boring songwriting elsewhere. Shelton is right though, great album cover.
not for me, didnt like
Cathiga spår som Hungry like a wolf och Hold back the rain blandas med menlösa New religion, Lonely in a nightmare och Last chance on a stairway.
Ok it’s the 1980’z and this was a huge album of the time…has a couple of hits but not a consistent record
Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf are always fun tracks, but the rest just isn't for me.
Not a Duran Duran fan, couple of ok songs and the rest a bit bland
Meh
80’s synth cheese. I’ve never taken Duran Duran seriously and I only know the hits but this is a whole album of danceable upbeat pop. I’m pleasantly surprised by how listenable I found it. It slows down for the last two songs and I especially liked the closer. I’ve had the song Rio in my head all day since hearing it.
Its ok, pop and a little lightweight but they did ok on it so good for them
Pretty nice overall, didnt stand out much in any particular aspect - just felt vibey and nice on the ears.
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: None None of these songs resonated with me. I've heard mention of Duran Duran before, but have no prior listening experience. I had always assumed they were sort of like R.E.M., alternative rock something or other... not new wave garbage. I am so done with the new wave genre.
The hits are all I need.
Didn't really enjoy it much at the time and it hasn't improved with age. A couple of good songs, only because they remind me of people and places of that era, but overall a fairly average product of its time.
Nup. 80's production, dumb lyrics and unenjoyable music.
2.5
Not for me
Didn't really have strong opinions on this one. The singles stand out - but that might just be because I'm so familiar with them. I sort of admire this era of synth pop, but I think it's been surpassed.
meh.
boring 💤 I also don't like the vocals much. Save a prayer is good, but covers of the song are better. The Chaffeur is interesting too. I need to revise my ratings though, some albums before I rated too highly
Music for girls
I don't like any of these songs as much as Planet Earth. Or even Girls On Film.
4.5/10 Very annoying, cheesy lyrics, metallic sound. Highlight: Save a Prayer
Actually found this kind of grating to listen to. Unfortunate because I think this album has a lot of good things going for it. Too bad my ears didn't enjoy it
As much as I loved the bangers of Rio and Hungry like the wolf, I didn’t find much variety or enjoyment out of any of the other tracks. They were fine, serviceable and maybe a lil catchy but nothing held a candle to those two tracks. Kind of a lackluster album
The YT music link goes to the collectors edition. I couldn't find the non collectors edition on YT music however the first 9 songs are the two discs on the original release, so I listened to those only. The rest are just remixes etc anyway. As to the album itself, aside from the one big hit single, the album is kinda meh. I think Duran Duran have better.
This album was disappointing at the time. Duran Duran had already lost their edge and I think most of the album tracks are lazy and pretty unmemorable. Rio the track, and its video were ridiculous. It's still disappointing. I give it 2, only because of Save A Prayer.
Rio isn't a good song. The verses are boring, the guitar sounds arent great, the verse guitar stabs are at least a nice idea. The best bit in the track (and therefore this whole album) is the arpeggio synth in the drop before the choruses. Hungry like the wolf probably has a better tune, but other than that it is fairly meh. None of the others have anything really worth of praise. They put in more arp synth to lesser effect in other songs. The nice guitar stabs in Rio are mimicked poorly by themselves on other songs. Any good bass work is entirely undone by the awful repeated boing note in new religion. Would happily never hear this again.
I like all the hits off this but it seems like all the filler sounds the same. I wanted to love it but couldnt.
2.5
I just can't get my head around why people keep saying this is "New Wave". I mean, when I hear the term "New Wave" I can think of tons of bands, from Joy Division to The Cure to Bauhaus to the Sisters of Mercy, from Devo to Echo & The Bunnymans and even proto New Wave bands, like Patti Smith, Television or Blondie, I can take into account. But Duran Duran? That boyband that produced some decent 80's synth pop and had a few smash hits to be never heard of later? I would say not so much. Musically this album is just not interesting . Being familiar with their hits, "Rio", "Save a Prayer" and "Hungry like the Wolf" I didn't expect as much, and it does sounds as dated as to be expected. Overly polished, clean synths and pretty forgettable songs. The only thing that stood out was the rhythm and bas section, but they can't save a dull pop record. 2/5
Two good songs don’t make a great album.
I've learned from this challenge that some people are lyrics first vs music first listeners. I'd say there are also vocals, guitar, bass etc first listeners. Bass first listeners seem to like this album but I'm a vocals first listener and I was not impressed. It was already on the back foot, being so very 80s, but I just can't see the appeal of these shrieky songs.
background music while working on my thesis, couldn’t wait for it to end because i couldn’t focus
Something I'd sing at a karaoke. Drunk. Favorite tracks: Hungry like the wolf Save a prayer
Obviously, the singles are classic 80's pop and stand the test of time. But i found the rest of the album quite bland. Just worse versions of the singles without much variety or merit
Regular/ mediano.
hrmph, catchy
Much of the same throughout. Carried by hungry like the wolf. Shame girls on film not on this album.
Old-Fashioned pop music.
Aside from a few of big singles. The rest of this album all kinda sounds alike in a way. It's like 2 albums. The part before New Religion is faster, radio friendly songs. New Religion and on sound like they could all be deep tracks from some 80s movie that is now widely mocked. Andy Taylor can play bass!
Boring. When I was a child this group was very famous. I do not understand why.
This came out in 1982, I would have thought later. Does Rio sound exactly like Hungry Like the Wolf or am I an idiot? Why did they put the zebra stripes all over the girls in the Rio video? Or was that the Hungry Like the Wolf video? New Wave music is terrible. They could have added one hit of the Bond theme and no one would be able to tell the difference between Rio and A View to a Kill. Hungry Like the Wolf is their biggest hit. Every song sounds exactly the same. I've heard electronica that sounds more different from song to song. This could be a Stranger Things soundtrack and kids (and adults who should know better sadly) would go crazy for. Save a Prayer has more plays than Rio and I've never heard it before this moment.

Most of the album only made me annoyed. I can appreciate some disco/fun style pop from last century. Earth Wind & Fire, for example, is great! This was not. I've heard some of the songs before. I wanted it to stop. I am convinced that the only reason anyone listens to this in 2025 is because of the nostalgia, not because of the music quality. New Religion was my favorite song because it didn't try to be what the rest of the album was. It was a more laid back song, which I appreciated. The rest was hot garbage. I hope the generator gives me something better tomorrow.
Glad when it ended. Not my tempo.
Last 3 songs + hungry like a wolf, absolutely killer
This album had “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” on it. There were also other songs that sound a lot like each other, some of which I liked more than I expected. I don’t really get the hype around this band though.
Meh
Not really for me but I know they're meant to be well written pop songs
The rounded off SpongeBob of albums. I liked "The Chauffeur"
I just can’t get over the dated sound and the fact that these songs have been used in the everything to denote “80s”. Overplayed and not pleasant.
Not world changing. Sort of eh but I think my dad had this album.
Not really my thing.
Catchy at times and not unpleasant. Don't think I can squeeze too much more enjoyment on repeat listens though
Well, the singles are still fine. Nothing else memorable and every song seemed to get to the point of just repeating the chorus very quickly. Definitely a band to stick to the greatest hits, based on this
Hmmmm. I liked what I knew already, the rest didn't do a ton for me. A bit samey in places.
This album feels boring at many times and sounds the same as many other 80's pop albums. Sadly, I do not have much to say about it.
It just doesn't do anything for me.
Rio and Hungry Like a Wolf are kitschy synth pop fun. The rest of this record doesn’t approach those songs.
Pretty much exactly what you'd expect- solid synth pop with mostly upbeat vibes. Some tracks were good but most of the album felt a little bland and without much diversity. It was pretty formulaic. They did add a couple slower songs toward the end, though they didn't really sound that different either. The songs also got longer toward the end. For me, that made them more tedious. I felt the same about the album; it just didn't have enough distinct songs to stay interesting for the whole runtime. Even if it wasn't necessarily bad or unpleasant, it just got old. This is one that has some good points, but really wasn't all that impressive to me. I'll call it fine. Overall: 2.5/5
This was not the original album. Too many remixes
i feel like i only heard two songs
in one ear out the other Fav song: The Chauffeur
So many other bands of that era were doing much better versions of this, but they were really handsome so....
I really tried. I thought I'd come to it with fresh ears and none of the baggage with which I first dismissed it, but alas.... I think my major problem is that they are obviously quite accomplished musicians but they just don't groove. Take the bass playing on Rio - it's sort of flashy, but it's also shit! I find his voice over processed and whiney, some of the lyrics are sort of funny, but overall the songwriting is so pedestrian. 'Save a prayer' is a particular bugbear. A horrible dirge. Add to the mix some of the most horrible sax playing from an era of horrible sax playing and you end up with something iconic only for being an emblem of shallowness of its era! If you want good 80's pop that really has survived the test of time listen to Human League.....
Its the 1980s oh my fuck
Perfect 80s pop nostalgia. Fine if that's your thing.
Very generic pop. The go-to for examples of eighties pop. I tried to listen to it, but in the end I only heard it.
Kind of difficult album for me because of the 80's production. It must have sounded fresh at the time but now the sound rather annoying. After few listens it kind of grew on me and I founded some parts that I really like, especially bass parts are great and some the vocal lines are interesting too. Still hard to understand why so many people like this album as much as they do.
Good just not my thing.
Couple of good songs. Pretty bland and very dated otherwise.
Ikke helt min greie.
This is certainly new for me. My only Duran Duran experience is what I’ve heard on the radio. This is definitely the kind of album I don’t care for the first time I hear it, but if I had to listen to it a few times I know I would love it. Each track sounds different but clearly from same creators and they are really going for something out there. It is difficult for me to know what is considered “groundbreaking” for an album from this time period without looking deeper into it but I imagine a lot of this is what help defined 80s synth sound. This could be a case of the originator of a new sound is copied so hard they begin to sound like a copier. After the album played through, a remastered version played and I feel the same about the album. High pitch ethereal sounds are ok for a bit but after a while it becomes grating.
Meh. That one song is good.
A couple classic 80s pop songs, but otherwise not my thing
I had higher expectations going into this because I enjoy Duran Duran's hits, but this album kinda bored me as a whole. The reliance on incredibly repetitive choruses in many of the songs irked me a bit and made everything feel unoriginal. I did like the quintessential 80s background to every song and the instrumentals definitely helped when songs got boring, but this was a bit of a snooze for me. I can see why the hits are hits. 2.5/5 stars
surprisingly just okayyyy
Singles are brilliant. The overall album is absolutely dull apart from those little flashes.
LISTEN ON MICAHS. DONT WANNA LISTEN AGAIN
Just don't get it...very pop
Sounds okay if you just let it wash over you. Listening to the lyrics isn’t very rewarding. A few decent songs there, but buried under 80s overproduction. I would dance to the hits at a bar.
She kinda stinks I'm afraid
This was not a bad album per se, but I am so sick and tired of the dad rock I have been getting for the last couple days, that I might be harsher than I should be. Also the lyrics to Hungry like the Wolf gave me a visceral reaction. Not my jam, I guess, but at leadst nothing especially jarring
New wave just isn’t my favorite. The singles are objectively good songs but I hate that this normalized non-guitar-driven rock. A few of the songs don’t have the structure or variety to sustain their length. Dislike the piecemeal production that sounds the opposite of live. It’s like the vocals exist totally separately from the music sonically.
Hungry Like a Wolf bring me great joy… the rest, not so much.
Ok
More of a Spandau man
Yeah I don't know it was something.
This is what you get If you want 80s synthie pop
Not a lot of heart, soul, or variation to be found here - and I don’t think they intended for that in a cool way. You know it’s tough when the singles that I remember from my childhood dont really invoke a sense of nostalgia. “Save A Prayer” is a slight stand out, but it, as well as “The Chauffer” show up too little too late. Maybe there was a visual component I’m missing out on since this was around MTV times, but other artists dug so much more out of this sound and took it in so many more interesting directions. Just skip this album / 5
Possibly fresh at the time but it a lot of this sounds such a cliche now. Still some great songs
There are 3 songs on this album. Rio's nice enough but they were reaaaallllllyy proud of it huh
I wanted to like this album considering it's popularity and longevity. But I dont. It largely all sounds the same and is just wal to wall 80s synth. Hasn't aged thay well. Very sterile and surface level
I wasn't a huge fan of the 80s bass on this. Hard to articulate what it is, but there was this clean bass sound that was super common in the 80s that I'm not wild about. I did like Hungry Like the Wolf because I'm not a complete monster.
Decent enough, but it’s just too poppy in a repetive and not particularly fun way.
I never did care for 80s synth pop 😑
Apart from 3 very good songs (The Chauffeur, Save a Prayer, Rio) the rest of the album didn’t catch my ear.
The best Duran Duran song is the cover of Hungry Like the Wolf by Reel Big Fish. The second best is New Moon on Monday, but that's not on this record. Rio is probably 3rd. Save a Prayer is pretty good, and that melody has always stuck in me from childhood. Last track is alright and quite interesting. Everything else on the album is merely ok.
Pop bien 80s comercial. Cansador.
not bad, just kind of generic pop. rio wasn't bad and lonely in your nightmare is pretty catchy. for what it is, it's pretty good. it's just not somethig i need. 2.5/5 stars.
Music for early adopters of those lasers that remove pubic hair permanently.
The band so nice they named them twice. Or the band that was so forgettable, they had to throw the name at you twice so you’d remember. That’s the query we will endeavour to answer in the next 45 minutes or so. A few hits on here but a legacy of mixed reviews make this an interesting prospect to start with. Love that instrumental to start. Super weird and it’s kind of shocked me. The chorus stinks and so do the lyrics, but I’m surprised by the underlying musicality here. It gets better as it gets away from that pop chorus. Not a great song, but not a terrible start. Does Duran want a new drug?? Huey Lewis and Rio. Well. As much as I hate myself right now, this song is fun as hell. It’s so incredibly catchy and the musicality has remained from the first track. We dwindle into repetition a little bit, but I can see this one being listened to again. The bass tone on this is fantastic as it has been so far, but I absolutely hate this song. The Mexican Death Match between Hugh Morris and Big Boss Man at Souled Out ‘97 was once described as “A thousand asses.” “Lonely in Your Nightmare” might be 1001. Here it is. The riff is fun. I liked it as a young fella as it’s playful and silly but a little bubblegum for my post 8 year old brain. The odd chanting section was actually kind of great. There are some futuristic ideas here that still sound fairly modern. Even in this jukebox favourite that has been worn down to the nub. Oh no. Oh no no no no. This was a complete snoozer. I have put on my Uncle O’ Grimacey branded sleepwear, blown out my candle on the holder and rolled into a blissful slumber awaiting a New Religion. Oh here we go. Much better. I am rubbing my eyes in an exaggerated fashion. A slightly morose tone?? Mentions of death and electric chairs. This is pretty cool. 3:45 kills. Back to the gutter? Nah it’s not horrible. The marimba section is pretty fun. The rest is very bleh. Doesn’t quite warrant the “Stairway to Hell” joke, but we might be in 80’s pop purgatory. Was this covered or interpolated or something? I don’t know, but that chorus is fairly haunting. I hate the rest of it, but yeah the chorus is quite nice. Man what a cool, eerie intro. Fades into a decent song, but when it first hits, it’s quite good. I have a serious question that I suppose I could google or god forbid, post on a forum. That question is, why did every English band have the same vocal tone? They all sound like this. Anyway. I’ll tweet Morrissey. This is one of the tougher reviews I’ve had to cobble together as far as score. There were insanely cool moments and two really decent songs, and there were stretches of irritation and boredom that are extremely hard to ignore. I beg for half stars, but this one sits right in the middle for me. Good moments, terrible moments, and while she dances on the sun or whatever, I ride into the sunset after delivering another lacklustre review. 2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: My Own Way, New Religion
I just can't stand Duran Duran. I can't say if it's too cheesy or not enough cheesy? I can't get the hype, even for the hit songs. Sorry.
Next
I have a couple of Duran Duran songs on my “Death Scene Music” playlist. I guess outside of that context I think this blows.
2/5
3 really good songs, the rest was not good
Ok hungry like the wolf is like one of the best songs ever. But the rest of this joint is a little hard to listen to. I do not like the singing.
2 songs are good. Very good in fact. The others are ones i’d never skip but never put on. Similar to the last album except there’s less good songs. So have to mark it down. 2 stars
Rio is their big one on the album and I've always found it middle of the road. I like how the verses sound like a New Generation WWF wrestler's entrance music. But it's pretty throwaway. Same with Hungry Like The Wolf. The rest of the album is below average, with very few enjoyable moments. New Religion was intriguing, sounds somewhere between Wham! and Bauhaus, not a winning combination. The Chauffeur was the best bit, they should have gone with more of this. It at least had character. Overall, it's monotonous sounds lazily put together. Lyrics and music totally uninspiring.
Not my bag.
Yeah, the 2 singles were enough.
cool ig
Alright album. Not very emotional and I didn't feel much listening to it. Had a fine sound but was slightly boring and repetitive. However it was very easy to listen to.
Why was it so hard for bands to release good music in this decade? 2.5/5
A short album that would otherwise be a complete dud if not for the title track.
I love the 80s but just not for me!
There are some interesting arrangements and instrumentation. And it’s all mixed very well. Sounds great. I just find it all really shallow for some reason. Not a fan.
voi duran duran. valtavasta suosiosta huolimatta kovin geneeristä kasarisynapoppia -- tällä listalla heikoimpien joukossa tämä. 2/5
not my fav, songs started blending into each other, but good beat
