Reviews (page 13 of 14)
I didn't enjoy this as an album. The singles were good, but frankly any individual song was pretty good by itself, but as a whole album I found it boring and tiresome.
I’ve never really gotten into Duran Duran. It’s fine, but nothing that really excites my ear holes.
Maybe I’d feel differently if this album wasn’t made in the middle of the synth “revolution”. It just sounds so dated. I just can’t get past the hideous keyboard production. The guitars and drums just scream early 80s too. To that end, the song New Religion wouldn’t sound out of place on a mid 80s Rush album (that’s not a good thing for either band by the way). Similar technical feel and sound. I’d be curious if it changes how we hear this dreck if there was an Iron Maiden cover of “Hungry Like the Wolf” just to hear the lyrics without the dated backing music. Won’t be one I revisit - it’s just too much of its time.
Very Glossy. Packed with sounds and flourishes which are Very 1982.
Just because I acknowledge I can see the route this takes to make the list doesn't mean I have to like it.
This is about as 80s as it gets for me. Crooning over a synthesizer. I thought this album was fairly lost until the last track. “The Chauffeur” is compelling and I’ll be coming back to it.
i wasn’t pulled in by this but! they’re not bad musicians
2*
Not bad
I respect it but at the same time I could NOT make myself listen to it.
Typisch 80er.
Not my bag
Meh, but at least now I know which Duran Duran songs are actually by them and not just generic 80s music
Not great. Dated. The 3 hit songs are okay, but not really my cup of tea.
So 80s, definitely danced to some of these songs at Barberella. Other than hungry like the wolf, these are some obscure 80s songs. Little to 80s for me.
-sax solo in rio hits -okay yeah rio is quite nice -I do not think 80s disco is my preferred genre of music though LOL. Thought this during “my own way” -okay so middle part of my own way ain’t half bad -lonely in your night has potential -hungry like the wolf is how I remember it yes -transition from wolf song to hold back the rain is nice -
I dont really get the appeal of Duran Duran. I guess they have some decent songs but overall it's just kind of boring to listen to. I'm completely over Hungry Like The Wolf and I don't even think it's particularly good in the first place.
Geht so
I didn't like this in the 80's and I still don't. 2 stars or D for me.
Not my jam. Less dated than expected.
average 80s rock album
Rio is a 5/5 song and Hungry Like the Wolf is a classic, but the rest of the songs just bloat the album. The vocals are too washed out, the songs are samey and uninteresting. 2.4/5 -> 2/5
Last Chance on the Stairway).
Short and sweet. Not so sweet.
Cool electronic pop rock sound, I can see how this would be someone’s vibe but it’s not my favorite thing. I did really enjoy a few songs on here though, with my favorite being “Lonely in Your Nightmare” because
Genuinely every song sounds very similar to each other. A real funky annd fun album, but I had trouble having any song stand out to me. 3/5
Didn’t hate it but not really for me. Hasn’t aged that well other than hungry like the wolf.
After listening to that one Japan album in this list, all I can say is that this is just a more successful rip off. At least the bass is nice
The 80's produced a lot of great music and it was also a time when exposure to bands and their music increased with the rise of MTV and music videos. This was good and bad, of course the extra medium allowed artists to give face to their fans that otherwise couldn't see them live, with music videos as another creative outlet. A band that truly benefited from this "new" art form was, Duran Duran. Their music videos, not doubt, gained an audience and throw in some controversy with racy content (girls on film...with bikinis? goodness gracious!) and pretty boy teen idol looks and you have a band selling millions of records, sell out shows and teenage girls hysteria to line the pockets of the band and their management. Was the music good? I've never liked the band, their music or their videos and beyond the "hits", I hadn't heard the complete album, Rio, until now. Beyond the hits, the music was boring, average early 80's pop, with no real substance or soul. Can a band be relevant by performing shitty music as a soundtrack to their videos?
Not for me though it’s so linked with that time period you can instantly see in your head the people dancing in the club to it as you listen… or Le Bon getting drowned on a boat in the Rio video….
I never liked Duran Duran at the time, and while the passage of time has made these songs better in my memory I'm still not fond of them. For me this is a rather dull album.
The 80's is proof that drugs do not always improve music. These lyrics barely make sense and I don't get why every song is played slow with double time drums.
Duran Duran is a fine band with some enjoyable songs. But I have no understanding what warrants them to be on this list.
New Wave und Synthpop. Nee.
I don’t see any reason to listen to this besides “Hungry Like The Wolf” which is still pretty mediocre.
Didn’t really care for it. Wouldn’t listen to it again , I can see why Hungry Like The Wolf was the most popular single for the album as it was the best song
Despite nostalgia blast from 8 year old me, and the 3 strong singles. This is not much cop is it? The musicianship sounds great but again we have the super plastic mega polished 80s production which removes a lot of feeling and interest, Le Bon's voice is frankly crap and the other tracks are filler. Important band and singles, but as an album barely registers.
Fun but not earth shattering. Nostalgic, reminds me of the early MTV era.
As a student I had this uber-80s LP sleeve framed on my wall, but somewhat fraudulently was never been a big fan of the music. The basslines are great and I liked New Religion and The Chauffeur. The vocals however are too thin and forgettable, so I don't think Duran Duran compare that well to peers like Spandau Ballet.
Hvad var det nu hun hed? Nå ja, Rio… og tak for det.
Ahmen bare føj!
Meh...
Not my thing.
A few good grooves, but mostly kinda middling otherwise
I remember the songs Rio and Hungry like the Wolf. I was not really impressed then, and still now. There really isn't much interesting on this album for me. I remember in the 1980s a video was equal to or even more important than the music. Videos were so new and MTV really had everyone entranced. This band had videos. As I listen, I'm not viewing videos. Musically this just isn't really interesting. Maybe hearing it with old ears makes it that way. I don't know, but I really don't feel anything from this. 2 stars.
Sometimes I sit down on the toilet and better music comes out
Aside from Hungry Like A Wolf - pretty forgettable album. And I think the radio airplay that the aforementioned song gets is the only reason why I know the song. Never was a fan of Duran Duran. Not my style. Vocals are the downfall. The music is pretty cool and pretty layered. But I just don't care for this type of music.
6/4/24 listened to at work (very shitty workday) wasn’t too crazy about it. upbeat and synthy, not terrible but not my cup of tea. standout songs ‘hungry like the wolf’ and ‘new religion’ 4/10
A definitively 80s album, but sometimes too repetitive.
Haha! Hungry Like a Wolf och Save A Prayer är okej. The Chauffeur är albumets bästa låt.
Inget oumph.
synth pop is really not for me. 2 stars
If my kids ever wanna know what 80s pop music sounded like, I would play them this as a fairly representative example. And then I would quickly explain to them that there was much, much better music that came out of the decade than what this presents.
2.5 stars. Lots of the elements to the songs are cool, with the distorted guitars and bass lines and synths. It definitely sounds like the 80s, but hardly any songs stand out. Even "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" kind of blend into the rest of the album. "Last Chance on a Stairway" sounded nice. It's all fine.
I ended up liking this a bit more than I was expecting. The bass in particular is great. But ultimately the songs aren't that great and I'm not a fan of the vocals.
I’ll give them this. They’ve spent the last 40 years working their guts out. The songs are decent and they’re good musicians. But seriously? You have 1000 albums. This isn’t one of them.
Remember this album. Disappointing in 1982 and disappointing now…3 good songs out of 9. Better than nothing..especially these days. I come from the era of the album…so there is a bias. Back then there was rarely any more than one or two duds/album..if any. Do like the Nagel album art they often used. I’m sure Patrick did too…popularity of this band helped him to sell millions.
Not even perfect cover art can make me eager listen to this record on any rotation. The US mix on a few of the tracks made me pretty uncomfortable.
Prima popsong. Sterke melodie, en het jostiband fluitje doet me denken aan 'The Fool On The Hill' van The Beatles, dus ik ben tevreden. 6/10 Highlights: Rio New Religion The Chauffeur
The hits are undeniable but everything in between is a total miss for me. Sweet album cover though.
Meh
I hated this band when it first came out and I still do. Incredibly formulaic and boring.
Don't love 80s synth pop but this was a good fun album.
Not good.
I didn’t feel this one very much. Hungry Like The Wolf and Rio are good of course, but none of the other songs really made any impact on me.
Sigh, I didn't want to hear anymore rap albums, so hurray! This popped up, but, haha, this is such soft pop rock FM radio blah-ness... I don't even want to give it two stars, ugh, sorry. Maybe try stars since the WOLF song got drilled into me by MTV.
Today - it’s too much out of time. Not so good
Cant imagine who would like this
Not a fan
Bland boring 80s pish, I dislike most of the hits, and the filler is rubbish. Save a prayer is decent though, and none of it is *offensively* bad, just dull.
the songs are so similar to me, i actually thought the song Rio was being played a second time when was actually Hungry Like the Wolf
really didn't enjoy this, too cheesy-sounding
Ok album. Good 80s stuff
Rio was good.
I think I only liked the one big track on this one, the other songs were ok but nothing standout. High 2.
Blends into the background, couple good ones there but the actual composition of the songs is not interesting
not as bad as I thought it'd be music: hated. (⌐■_■)
This almost felt like an album that I would immediately forget and then never think of again… but then I did think the last song was very cool.
There are three songs on this album. I think they each played three times. This does not make Classic.
Rio? Prawdopodobnie Brazylia. Jednak to dziewczyna co tańczy na plaży. Całkiem fajna okładka. Podoba mi się styl grafiki. Na Spotify tylko wersja kolekcjonerska - strasznie długa. Niezapadający w pamięć album. Raczej do niego nie wrócę. Żadna piosenka nie wyróżnia się.
save a prayer elég nagy banger
Leur 2ème album. Son éclectique très british. Ressemble à The the par moments.
Mid
Bleh
A couple of great songs but not that great and not much else
Never really knew what the hype was around this band. Although, I wasn't born at the time, so that probably explains it. I like Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf, but the other tracks all sound very similar to me. Slightly annoying vocal style too. Significant enough album, but not for me.
I don't really like 80s distorted rock. It's a preference issue.
Loved Hungry Like a Wolf and a couple others, but this genre just doesn’t resonate with me. Synths and drum machines feel soulless.
Just OK
There are so many modern albums that replace this one for me. I respect the work done by Duran Duran when this was released but it's not going to see active play from me anymore in 2023
meh buena produ
Really flat album with similar sounding songs throughout the album. The singles are the standouts and the rest are very forgettable.
was ok
I liked the sound at first but got tired of it quickly. Then liked the last two songs because they had a different vibe
boring
Jury is out on which way those guys'll go. They're a lot of fun, and James Taylor is one of the most proficient bass players in the UK at the moment, giving them a funky edge.
A quite OK album from a genre that I generally dislike (new wave/early 1980s synth pop). I still don't like the overall sound most of the time and also how simple the album is musically. I can't really give it more than 2.5 for this album.
Rio and Hungry Like a Wolf are good, the rest of the album just kind of washed over me.
Not my cup of tea.
“Hungry Like the Wolf” is one of my favorite songs ever, but this album was nowhere near as good as that song would make you think it’d be.
Nee. Nee, nee nee.
Classic songs and sound.. respect the artistry but not rly my vibe unforch
gets plain boring after the first song
Just ok, wouldn't seek this out
As a Gen-Xer, I can't help but find something irresistible about Duran Duran's sound and Simon's vocals specifically, no matter how formulaic and shallow their songs get. Still, aside from some from the nostalgia of remembering the Rio video on MTV (which was more interesting than the actual song) and listening to the few other standouts on this album, there's not much to get excited about.
Maybe my mum would like this one
Cheesy
OK Album. Had it on in the background. Two good songs. Rest sounds exactly like I would expect it to. No surprises.
Makes me feel like at an all inclusive resort in Rio in the 80’s.
Rätt tidstypiskt, några hyfsade låtar men genomgående inte överdrivet fantastiskt. Helt okej.
Don't like the voice, the vibe und production.
really cool jams, however the bass grooves were quite repetitive.
‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ is catchy. This is not my kind of music though
Veel te irritante muziek. Te druk en gewoon geen leuke melodietjes
MTV 80's Pop icons - pretty boring listen for me
I liked hungry like a wolf as a song The style of the vocals just really doesn’t appeal to me if I’m honest. It’s just singing the same note in a British accent and it’s quite annoying.
3/10
i do like how this album sounds but a lot of the songs sound the same. its good, the vibe is good, but it's hard for me to differentiate songs and they tend to drag on for way longer than necessary. (last second added note, maybe it feels dragged out bc a lot of the songs don't seem to have a traditional chorus?) i was like "oh this is the hungry like the wolf album" and then listened to the album and it was just another 40 minutes of hungry like the wolf. like i had to go back to every single song to remind myself of which one it was to rank them because i couldn't remember anything of substance to differentiate them. sad to say i think abbey road is a better album
What you'd expect. Besides the 3 hits it's below average.
I mean it’s okay, but I was never a fan first time around. I enjoyed hearing Save a Prayer again, but that’s it.
Started strong, I kind of got bored. It eventually all kind of blended together. I love the iconic sound, but it's too much of the same content for me!
fun bass, but not for me
Quintessentially 80's but I found it to be quite repetitive and a little boring. Enjoyed the last song The Chauffeur as it mixed things up a bit but I won't be rushing to listen to this again
Good example of 1980’s pop. Too slick and soulless for my taste though.
I don't know why but I found this very annoying. Good thing they saved that prayer, because that spared them from being relegated to the worst of the worst.
I remember MTV was a big fan of Duran Duran during the early 80's. I was not. I think the 2 most popular songs are OK, but not really my type of music. Consider it to be a disco/pop sound. Rio and Hungry Like a Wolf are both decent songs, but nothing I would seek out. This album didn't do much for me and nothing stood out other then the overplayed MTV songs. OK to listen to 30 years later, but still not a fan. 2
A good example of an album that has some more value than just the one or two big hits it's known for. A decently fun listen
Save a prayer is a 10
The Chaffeur, Rio 2/5
the last two tracks of the album, saving a prayer and chauffeur, were my favs but i wasn't miserable during the songs before. this was funkier than i expected. i've heard of the band, but wasn't sure what it would sound like. the cover gave me nothing, no hints.
Too much, sorry world
It's a Duran Duran album. Pleasant enough - not as good as their first, not as bad as some later efforts. The tunes are catchy, but am not sure how this ended up on this list. I think you probably had to be there - I was too busy listening the The Fall at the time, I suspect.
A classic album? Seriously? Style, yes. Not sure about the substance. With no shame, this was SO familiar back in '82. I even had the poster on my wall. Four decades later and it was a pleasant morning singalong, but nothing more. I quite like the hint of something more sinister on Save a Prayer and Lonely in Your Nightmare. It wasn't all sugar gum pop. But it belongs in a time capsule and will probably stay there for me.
Familiar with a couple radio hits from this album. Duran Duran is generally not my style so the other songs all ran into each other for me.
Feels very dated. A few hits, but even those feel like the shallow side of new wave. I like new wave, but this is hardly the best it had to offer.
First half of this album: just ok. Second half: rips. The more synths the better and the sillier the synths the more I like it. best tracks: save a prayer, the chauffeur, hungry like the wolf
2,5
Hits were good, not too interested in the rest, last track The Chauffeur was annoying, I wanted the album to be over.
The 80s was a dark time for music. Some catchy songs but overall was not a fan.
Ihan vekkulia settiä soitannallisesti, mutta laulannassa joku tökkää. Levyn hittibiisi olikin aika monesta leffasta tuttu ja oikein veikeä.
Ei oo aikasemmin tullu kuunneltua ja yllätyin. Hauskaa ja reipasta diskofunkpoppia. Ei kuitenkaan jäänyt sen enempää kiinnostamaan. 2/5
I guess I'm the right age to have grown up hating Duran Duran and everything they stand for. There's still something in it that grates. It feels linked to the Thatcherism of the era. It's impossible to listen to them without seeing that video of them sat on a yacht in the sunshine looking like twats. So in reappraisal with a little distance? I didn't hate it as much as I expected. How's that for faint praise? Some of the singles were played so much when I was of Radio One listening age that there's a nostalgic element I'm not going to be able to separate from the music. In the end though, it's a bit shit. I'm not going to listen to it again.
I like it. Classic 80’s kick off. But I like others 80s’ albums more.
A lot of people like this stuff, but I can’t get into it. Early 80s new wave rubbish.
Maa
This one's definitely an album built around its singles. Not much of interest here, but Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf are strong enough to make Duran Duran one of the more notable groups of the 80s.
Doesn’t quite light my fuse resulting in a bang, b-b-bang-oh.
Genres: New Wave Formed: Birmingham in 1978 Run time: 9 songs, 42 min 41 sec Some great songs: "Rio" (Spotify 63M plays), "Hungry Like the Wolf" (Spotify 308M plays) and "Save a Prayer" (Spotify 58M plays). "Lonely in Your Nightmare": Verses are contrived, but the chorus is catchy. "Hold Back the Rain": Meh. "New Religion": Nonsense. They sing alternate lines over each other and it’s incomprehensible. "Last Chance on the Stairway": Rubish. It doesn’t flow because they stretch some words to fit them in and then they squish others. I know that sometimes happens in songs but this one has no consistency. "The Chauffeur": Good tune ruined by crap lyrics. We often talk about quality over quantity. Well this album delivers some good stuff, some crap and filler and it doesn’t make up for quality with quantity. It should have been four songs on an EP! My Rating: **
meh
Not the biggest fan of Duran Duran, glad I listened though as I likely won't otherwise! Closing track is half decent
Good but not great.
Inoffensive.
nothing special
Meh. Definitely some classics, and I probably wouldn't change the radio station if one of these played, but I would also never seek them out.
I like it better than I did in 1982, but that is damning it with faint praise
Hungry like the wolf slaps but it’s the only thing this album has going for it 2.2/5
I typically love cheesy 80s music but this wasn’t doing it for me.
Prefereixo mil vegades "The wedding album".
Just sounded like big song and whilst I enjoy the full on 80s vibe, his voice started to grate on me after a few songs. Rio and Hold Back the Rain earn a star each
This is definitely not my preferred genre of 80s music and I wasn't a big fan of this album. The singles are decent and one additional track but I would never find myself coming back to this album. I don't like the production and the lyrics are cheesy/melodramatic to me but there are a few catchy tracks. Standout Tracks: Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, Hold Back the Rain.
My younger brother had this - I was at heart in 1982 a Bunnymen Teardrops New Order camouflage jacket wearing new waver. He, 2 years younger, had the pastel suit, blonde flick and white shirt of the New Romantic. We still have some excellent photos of him around that time. Anyway, the 3 singles were inescapable. The rest of the album is efficient. Now I'm in birmingham and you can buy an art print of the Rum Runner. All mental floss which ends up saying that they peaked with Planet Earth and declined steeply from there. he did go to Milton keynes to see Lets Dance era Bowie, so he got something good out of the whole thing.
80s meh
Not that good besides the hits
Pretty challenging listen, for me. I knew going into this project that I hate the sound of 80's new wave & synth pop, and this is like the archetypical example thereof. It's got nothing to do with song composition, catchiness, whatever... It's just, this specific color of music, this era's timbre. It's nails on a chalkboard to me. The (relative to today) low-fi digital sound to... Well, everything. Drums, bass, guitar, even the vocals, and of course AAAALLLL that gross synth. The way it all sounds like it was run through an old, bad computer just really turns me off. Which is a super shame because these are sharply composed, fun, catchy, upbeat danceable tracks! There's a real energizing sense of experimentation going on here and it's never boring. I wish I could make these statements and ultimately give it a higher score, but I cannot. For all its catchiness, and its anthemic climactic feeling, the ending of Hold Back the rain, for instance, just makes me want to clutch my head and hide under my desk to wait out the assault of sounds I cannot help but find ugly. Last Chance on the Stairway and The Chauffeur break through that barrier for me though. The revulsion is still there but they are good enough aside from that that I still ended up with, at least as many positive feelings as negative. This album is a well crafted meal made by and for a culture to which I am -starkly- not a part. I can recognize how well it is made, and politely decline from a second helping.
Fun at first and then got very boring
interessante, ma noioso dopo un pochetto
catchy singles but much cringe
It's radio funk/electro pop. It's fine, but not something I would seek out.
meh...
Outside of 3 songs I thought it sounded like a dates idea of the future.
Duran Duran is a 80's band but in this album there isn't the his best songs.
Not my thing.
Never liked the new romantics, as a young lefty I thought it was mostly escapist, vacuous, synthetic nonsense. 40 years later and while my toe is tapping to Rio and Hungry like the wolf, I can't say I have warmed much to Duran Duran. Not for me
Not totally bad but damn those 80’s sounds
The music is just okay, it doesn't do anything to excite me or want to listen to it again. Hungry like the wolf is the best song on the album.
Good fun, feels a little too nostalgic to listen comfortably
cheesy but in the not fun way
I know Duran Duran only by reputation and I was expecting much more from this album. In the end, it's just a boring new wave.
Meh. 5/10
Embarrassed Embarrassed. When I have had the original vinyl of an album that has been sent by the App, I have stated this with a sense of pride. I knew it was just a matter of time until I would prefer that nobody knew.
I only knew the 2 hits, which I wasn't too crazy about, something about the yachts and the hairdos in the videos maybe. The rest is pretty bland and commercial 80s synth-pop. They owe a lot to MTV.
Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf are both good. Everything else sort of ran together. This was fine.
Not a big fan of new wave.
I liked it
Huge pop album back in the day. The detritus of the disco era. Not my favorite, but ok. I liked the bass on “New Religion”. 2.5 and rounding down.
I knew this one mostly by the cover, so was happy to hear several songs I already knew. That said, they've already largely faded from my mind. Lots of love for the genre, but this album feels like but a necessary step in its history.
Njaaaaaaaäa
Oh Dear, What can I say, My wife of 36 years was a Spandau fan so the Duranies never got a look in in my house! Big Simon and the boys were obviously good at their jobs and the image worked for them in the '80's but in terms of longevity and musical prowess I would always stick with Tony Hadley, The Brothers Kemp et al. Not one in my collection but I suppose that "Rio" & " Hungry Like the Wolf" have some credit. don't think this is one for my top 1000!
I liked New Religion and The Chauffeur. Apart from that, it was nice listening to an album from the New Romantics wave ^^
Obviously the hits are part of popular culture so they stood out. Otherwise quite samey.
dated **** that is no fun anymore, except for an old Bond movie
Generic dance music, repetetive
80s pop trash. 2 songs i vibed with, though.
Not my cup of tea. Too much disco disco.
Aside from a few tracks with a groove (Hold Back the Rain), there’s an artifice to the sound of Duran Duran, principally conveyed through the nasty synths and drum sounds
Recognised few of the tracks, seems to have their big ones on. Rio, Hungry Like The Wolf, Save A Prayer. Not really my bag though, I like the songs to the extent that they're classics but I never have been a massive fan other than that. As an album it wasn't anything special. 2/5
I feel like I should have something to say about this album, but I don't.
Well, I'm not sure quite where to fall on this one. "Rio" is awful. I thought "Hungry Like a Wolf" was better for the first half, but by the end was quite sick of it. There are a few decent tracks though, mostly the ones that put more focus on the guitar and bass. (I'm beginning to think I'm really not a big fan of 80s music!)
I can’t unhear the saxophone now...
Allergic to Duran duran
It was alright
Flimsy, fun but forgettable pop-rock. The new wave sound is here, but basically stripped of most of the coiled energy I find enjoyable in new wave music. "Hungry Like the Wolf" is pretty good, but the title track offsets it by being so annoying. 2.5
Hungry like the wolf? I can’t really hang. Incredible production no doubt.
First word to describe this album, it’s ecstatic. It’s like a new wave wall of synthesized sound. With the first track your thrust into the frenetic tempos and layers of sound. The singing and chorus work to bring it back to earth. Like Dusty Springfield abd the Smith’s before it though, this album feels like a package of good songs surrounding that banger hit in the middle, Hungry Like the Wolves, which shows more balance, a better hook and chorus and harmonies holding it together. I liked this album but felt that it was missing what I love about new wave, the post punk and pre rock minimalism and exploration of ennui. Track 3 starts with the post punk I’m looking for then builds to return to the ecstatic synth wall. I found the digital drums effects and dominating bass annoying, showing the albums age. There is really only two songs not super up tempo. Last song is dope, it goes where I want this album to go and scratches my new wave/post punk itch. Shows where new wave can go. Shows what elements were retained andwhich were cast aside. The annoying and thrumming pervasive baseline is nowhere to be found. I prefer the minimalism here to the maximalism that takes center stage on the rest of the album. It’s proto modern electric indy and I wish there was more. Though I will say, I had a great time listening through it and wished I had leg warmers, hair spray and a brightly colored Walkman to accompany it. PS, big fan of the album art.
Didn't have a chance to write up a full review. Enjoyed listening to this, great energy, might return at some pint.
Meh.
Favorite track:Hungry Like the Wolf, favorite musician: Drummer. I felt at times they could have gone higher or lower to gain more depth. But lots of Duran Duran follows after this album, so who am I to critique an oldie but goodie.
Too much noise
Muy experimental
No le pude poner mucha atención 2.5
Most of these songs sound the same. Hungy Like the Wolf is still good though
Oh the sounds of the 80s.
Really not a fan. This is my least favorite album so far.
I mean it’s 80s synth pop
I confess that if I hear a Duran Duran song in a well constructed 80's nostalgia movie scene, than I'm all up for it. I could not enjoy it this way.
Fav Song: Hungry Like a Wolf
Very 80s I'll hear the hits everyonce and a while.
Nah. Best track: The Chauffeur
Man this is so not my vibe. I had to DNF this one
i guess you had to be there...
I admire the ambition but it doesn't quite land for me. You can hear that they are trying to do something quite epic. There are some bold choices in instrumentation and playing. There are also some elements that feel like they pander to mainstream appeal - the vocals often feel very cool and fashionable and sort of self conscious. I think it's those self conscious popular elements that really stop me from enjoying that dense soundscape and flare playing.
This is where the gains of Punk, New Wave and Post Punk are swept away and Corporate MTV Rock rushes in. This is where the vacuous, pretentious 80's begin. Music is OK but on later albums Duran are practically prog as they reach for Stadium Rock's cash cow. The singing and the lyrics though are dreadful. Horrible Thatcherite conspicuous consumption badly hidden behind 6th Form Poetry.
FIlimsy vacuum pack shopping mall pop sometimes with good melodies. Vocals are uninteresting, lyrics are unengaging and borderline meaningless. Completely lacking in humour, without Roxy musics melancholy elegance or Japan`s strangeness.
At first I liked the first song, but then the more I listened to album, the more I realised how annoying the sound was for me and how much I wanted to turn it off.
Not my style
Well, I made it through. It was okay, but not my thing. Don't need to listen to any more of this.
I’m sure living in the 80s was fun, but man this music does not stand the test of time.
Everything I hate about new wave in a 42-minute album. The good news is, it's only the 7th new wave album I've pulled in the last seven days, and only the 29th new wave album I've pulled in the last month. 1/5
I did not like it. I'm not even sure how anyone took most of the tracks seriously. The vocals suck overall. The last song, The Chauffeur, was the best song. Hungry like a Wolf was an okay hit but these days it's just been played one too many.
Trash.
I like a couple of songs on this one and maybe one more of theirs from an earlier LP, the song Girls on Film. I never really understood the appeal from a musical stand point. Culturally they did have a pretty big impact on the ‘80s as did Culture Club so I guess I can see why you might want to listen to this one, to get a feel of what was going on in the 1980s. But this is an underwhelming LP overall.
Hate it
"Nog 1 versie dan"
Oh dear
God this album is annoying. It's not that I don't like the sound of the album, it's a kind if poppy new wave I can normally get behind, but these songs are not good enough to be interesting. The lyrics aren't interesting enough to be looked into, and the hooks just keep going on and on. Whenever I started to like a song, like the title track, the song went on for so on that eventually I started to get annoyed by the repetition of the hook and began to dislike the song. Seriously, if this album was shorter in almost every aspect I would maybe like it, but because of it's length the album just annoyed me. That's how I would describe this album by and large: annoying. The only song worth listening to again on repeat is Hungry Like the Wolf, and even that I can only listen to so much. Maybe Hold Back the Rain if I'm in a particular mood. But otherwise, just grating snd eye-rolling. We don't like in the MTV music video era anymore, and that's painfully obvious listening to this album.
No pase del primer tema
Una cosa ochentera sin interés hoy.
Rio is a kind of a banger but this was a beating
I happened to play this on regular youtube while sitting at my desk. There were multiple 3+ minute ads that I let play all the way through because I found the background music more pleasant than the actual album. Not ideal. (I did go ahead and skip the ad about the "terrifying biblical prophecy", it didn't have music). Everything here sounds so damn cheesy. It makes me scrunch my face up. we're really starting to get to the bottom of what kind of 80's music I can't stand. Soft-Cell, Sade, Duran Duran, all in the past couple days. Looking through the list I see a bunch of great 80's albums, bad luck so far. I kind of thought this would sneak out a begrudging 2 stars because "Rio" is a bit catchy even if I don't love it, but I hated the rest of the album. 1 star and not looking back.
Didnt really grab me. New religion was a good song though
Wanted to enjoy this. Did not enjoy it. “New Religion” was a highlight. I have a headache.
I wasn't my thing
not for me
Klebrige 80er Dekadenz. Ist durch die Zeit noch ranziger geworden.
No émotion, no interest
1982, and the yuppification of English popular culture is in full swing. Enter the opening bars of 'Rio' and the Roland Jupiter 4 sounds just like what the flickering boards at the London Stock Exchange look like. Buy low, sell high! Simon Le Bon is as braggadocious as they come, as he croons over the shimmer and gleam of the latest production techniques. Cocksure and unsentimental, this is an album to get rich quick to, no matter the cost. Tracks about predatory sexual conquests ('Hungry Like a Wolf'), which unashamedly objectify their targets ('Rio'), and celebrate transactional one-night-stands ('Save a Prayer') are the biggest pop hits. Doesn't their hair look great in the videos! 'Rio' is selling an old boys club elitism to the masses which were suffering in its wake. No wonder Duran Duran became the poster boys of Thatcher's Britain.
Not my cup of tea. Every song sounded similar to me. I couldn’t connect to it in any way.
They were the Take That of my school life, their name scribbled on most of the girl’s school bags in my year, they loved Le Bon and the boys - I couldn’t stand them, and that remains the same today.
Not my thing
Ill admit i have a lot of assumptions about this music and the people who listen to it, but I'll give it a chance. After listen: boring and safe, not into it.
No, just no. Culture Club yesterday and Duran Duran today. How is this in the top 1001 albums? Lightweight 80s pop. There are better New Romantic/synth albums out there.
almost all songs were mid, nothing stood out to me or caught my attention.
Not my cup of tea at all.
1980’s yacht rock two singles and a lot of filler!
This encapsulates a lot of what I don't like about 80s pop. It would be nice if the music gave some kind of feel, but this doesn't offer anything at all. Empty, cheap pop
Last week, I accidentally ended up listening to some Duran Duran, and I thought it was actually pretty decent. But to be honest, this album doesn’t really rock.
Fuck these guys.
Not for me. Not aged well. I tried to like a few songs at moments but no.
I really tried. I thought I'd come to it with fresh ears and none of the baggage with which I first dismissed it, but alas.... I think my major problem is that they are obviously quite accomplished musicians but they just don't groove. Take the bass playing on Rio - it's sort of flashy, but it's also shit! I find his voice over processed and whiney, some of the lyrics are sort of funny, but overall the songwriting is so pedestrian. 'Save a prayer' is a particular bugbear. A horrible dirge. Add to the mix some of the most horrible sax playing from an era of horrible sax playing and you end up with something iconic only for being an emblem of shallowness of its era! If you want good 80's pop that really has survived the test of time listen to Human League.....
Dreadful. Everything wrong with the 80s
Bad
Poor, old pop rock All songs are the same
i can't stand new wave, i'm sorry.
pretty boring
не мое
One dimensional
Truly detestable. Annoying synth patterns permeate at least half the songs here, ruining them. The vocalist is obnoxious on every song, the guitars sound thin, and the choruses tend to be more irritating than catchy. The second half is at least a step up from the first half, with the most tolerable songs being New Religion and Save a Prayer, but they're not enough to save this from a one star. I found this so bad that I may go back and bump Dexys Midnight Runners up a star because in comparison that was incredible
80s new wave pop shite. Sorry.
Mostly different versions of eponymous song that I particularly dislike
Nope!
Did not like
If I can’t remember it ehhh
GOAT cover, drab synthy 80s BS, not listening to this or any of the songs on this again.
Why Why Why?
Aaaaaaagh! Make it stop!
Buah, those eighties! And there are eighties and eighties...
You've heard of backpack rap? I present to you fannypack pop!
Before this album I'd say youd never find me listening to Duran Duran. And Same now. I did an intro scan. its all I could manage.
Never liked ‘em. One star. (Which should be added to my Sinead O’Connor score, because I pressed 4 stars for her & only got 3). Thereby giving this a zero.
Ni de lejos es el mejor disco de 1982: Thriller, 1999, Avalon, Pornogaphy, Nebraska, los debuts de Felt, Coucteau Twins, Laurie Anderson o Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Otros como New gold dream, Glassworks, The days of wine and roses, Too Rye Ay... Han publicado discos y videoclips mucho mejores (Skin trade, A view to a Kill, Wild Boys...)
80’s. Too 80’s for me.
Ez du putzik balio
Definitely early 80s
Prejuicios, o no?
Not good.
The intersection of cocaine and flash in the pan recording technology.
