Fine…. a little underwhelming and forgettable. Not much to say. One favorite track added before listening to the album in its entirety, still holds up: the chauffeur

2.0 stars New wave music rarely does it for me. and this album is no exception. it's fine, it's not awful by any means, just doesn't interest me. I find myself not paying attention to the lyrics on this album...so I just assume they're mostly about beautiful blonde women. Favrorite track: Lonely In Your Nightmare

Not my thing.

Certainly a different listen for me as I’ve never fully explored 80s New Wave. Seems hard to fully appreciate without the context of the time in music. But I’m giving it an honest listen, and a lot of that sound just isn’t for me…but it’s still really fun at times. The overly 80s sound just is very dated. The less poppy sounding stuff is somehow maybe better? I like Lonely in Your Nightmare. Alright I lied, some of this is really fun. I view this as pop, not really a “rock” sound. But is it catchy. Hungry Like the Wolf sounds like every 80s music background soundtrack…in a good way? Overall, a fun listen at times, but not necessarily a sound I would regularly return to. I was pretty bored and over it after a few songs. It’s on the border of a 2-3/5 for me. Certainly a snapshot in time. Feels like you can play this and say: this is what the 80s sounded like to a lot of people. Not necessarily bad things, but not sure it’s necessarily a vital listen as an entire album.

In the end, ita like others classics that dont are impactful anymore. Its well done, but ita no something to look for again.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The singles and hits are obviously catchy and boppy but the rest of it felt slightly empty. You could see why Duran Duran were as big as they were, and hear how they influenced a certain rock-pop sound in this era. Or were they influenced by it? I don’t know enough about them to distinguish. Rio’s fun. Probably won’t listen to it again.

A little bit too much party going on here. Great artwork, and vocal performances are wonderful. I would much rather listen to the Cure or Depeche Mode.

80's synth pop.. how is this so highly rated? It ages poorly and is musically not that interesting. Hungry like the wolf and save a prayer are the only OK songs, largely because of how catchy they are whick ok fair but top 1000? ugh 80's

This album sounds like the 80s as a decade trying to figure itself out. I don't like the hits enough to over compensate for boring songwriting elsewhere. Shelton is right though, great album cover.

Duran Duran får ofta klä skott för det som är dåligt med 80talet, så som i Jonas recension. Det är lite orättvist tycker jag. DD är bland de bättre listpopakterna, första plattan är t.o.m. bra skulle jag påstå. Visst det handlar lika mycket om kläder, frisyrer, videos som om popmusik när man pratar DD, men det behöver inte va nåt negativt det är ju en del begreppet pop. På Rio finns en knapp handfull alldeles utmärkta listpoplåtar, det gemensamma för dessa är att DD's new wave rötter får skina igenom där. Att Matt LeBon har italienska kostymer och är snyggare än George Michael gör inte saken sämre. När det blir såsigare och bara fokus på produktion blir det klart sämre. Klart godkänd fashionpop

Inledande Rio är riktigt bra. Sen blir det ojämnare. Läste någonstans sagt att de ville låta som en blandning av Sex Pisotols och Chic. Vet varken om de lyckas eller om det vore bra. Att blanda två goda ting ger nödvändigtvis inte ett tredje gott. Cathiga spår som Hungry like a wolf och Hold back the rain blandas med menlösa New religion, Lonely in a nightmare och Last chance on a stairway. Summa summarum, utfyllnaden är helt enkelt för svag för att nå upp till trean.

Jag blir på så dåligt humör av att höra detta. Musik ska ju väcka känslor så det får man ju ge Duran Duran. Men det egentligen inte DD:s fel, utan det är hela 80-talet som jag stör mig på. Detta decennium som hävdades vara individualisms årtionde. Men musikaliskt har väl aldrig mittfåran varit så smal och likriktad? Kritvit, stelbent och ytlig. Pisksnärtstrummor och Van Halen-riff Musik som det enbart kan marscheras till. 80-talet är musikens motsvarighet till fascismen. Renässansen för 80-talet har sammanfallit med ytterhögerns framväxt i Europa och och USA. Knappast en slump. Jag kräver en motsvarighet till Nürnbergrättegångarna som gör upp med 80-talets orättfärdigheter. Men som sagt allt är inte Duran Durans fel.

Ok it’s the 1980’z and this was a huge album of the time…has a couple of hits but not a consistent record

80’s synth cheese. I’ve never taken Duran Duran seriously and I only know the hits but this is a whole album of danceable upbeat pop. I’m pleasantly surprised by how listenable I found it. It slows down for the last two songs and I especially liked the closer. I’ve had the song Rio in my head all day since hearing it.

Its ok, pop and a little lightweight but they did ok on it so good for them

I had always assumed they were sort of like R.E.M., alternative rock something or other... not new wave garbage. I am so done with the new wave genre.

Didn't really enjoy it much at the time and it hasn't improved with age. A couple of good songs, only because they remind me of people and places of that era, but overall a fairly average product of its time.

Didn't really have strong opinions on this one. The singles stand out - but that might just be because I'm so familiar with them. I sort of admire this era of synth pop, but I think it's been surpassed.

As much as I loved the bangers of Rio and Hungry like the wolf, I didn’t find much variety or enjoyment out of any of the other tracks. They were fine, serviceable and maybe a lil catchy but nothing held a candle to those two tracks. Kind of a lackluster album

The YT music link goes to the collectors edition. I couldn't find the non collectors edition on YT music however the first 9 songs are the two discs on the original release, so I listened to those only. The rest are just remixes etc anyway. As to the album itself, aside from the one big hit single, the album is kinda meh. I think Duran Duran have better.

This album was disappointing at the time. Duran Duran had already lost their edge and I think most of the album tracks are lazy and pretty unmemorable. Rio the track, and its video were ridiculous. It's still disappointing. I give it 2, only because of Save A Prayer.

Rio isn't a good song. The verses are boring, the guitar sounds arent great, the verse guitar stabs are at least a nice idea. The best bit in the track (and therefore this whole album) is the arpeggio synth in the drop before the choruses. Hungry like the wolf probably has a better tune, but other than that it is fairly meh. None of the others have anything really worth of praise. They put in more arp synth to lesser effect in other songs. The nice guitar stabs in Rio are mimicked poorly by themselves on other songs. Any good bass work is entirely undone by the awful repeated boing note in new religion. Would happily never hear this again.

I like all the hits off this but it seems like all the filler sounds the same. I wanted to love it but couldnt.

I just can't get my head around why people keep saying this is "New Wave". I mean, when I hear the term "New Wave" I can think of tons of bands, from Joy Division to The Cure to Bauhaus to the Sisters of Mercy, from Devo to Echo & The Bunnymans and even proto New Wave bands, like Patti Smith, Television or Blondie, I can take into account. But Duran Duran? That boyband that produced some decent 80's synth pop and had a few smash hits to be never heard of later? I would say not so much. Musically this album is just not interesting . Being familiar with their hits, "Rio", "Save a Prayer" and "Hungry like the Wolf" I didn't expect as much, and it does sounds as dated as to be expected. Overly polished, clean synths and pretty forgettable songs. The only thing that stood out was the rhythm and bas section, but they can't save a dull pop record. 2/5

Two good songs don’t make a great album.

I've learned from this challenge that some people are lyrics first vs music first listeners. I'd say there are also vocals, guitar, bass etc first listeners. Bass first listeners seem to like this album but I'm a vocals first listener and I was not impressed. It was already on the back foot, being so very 80s, but I just can't see the appeal of these shrieky songs.

Aside from a few of big singles. The rest of this album all kinda sounds alike in a way. It's like 2 albums. The part before New Religion is faster, radio friendly songs. New Religion and on sound like they could all be deep tracks from some 80s movie that is now widely mocked. Andy Taylor can play bass!

Most of the album only made me annoyed. I can appreciate some disco/fun style pop from last century. Earth Wind & Fire, for example, is great! This was not. I've heard some of the songs before. I wanted it to stop. I am convinced that the only reason anyone listens to this in 2025 is because of the nostalgia, not because of the music quality. New Religion was my favorite song because it didn't try to be what the rest of the album was. It was a more laid back song, which I appreciated. The rest was hot garbage. I hope the generator gives me something better tomorrow.

Pretty much exactly what you'd expect- solid synth pop with mostly upbeat vibes. Some tracks were good but most of the album felt a little bland and without much diversity. It was pretty formulaic. They did add a couple slower songs toward the end, though they didn't really sound that different either. The songs also got longer toward the end. For me, that made them more tedious. I felt the same about the album; it just didn't have enough distinct songs to stay interesting for the whole runtime. Even if it wasn't necessarily bad or unpleasant, it just got old. This is one that has some good points, but really wasn't all that impressive to me. I'll call it fine. Overall: 2.5/5

So many other bands of that era were doing much better versions of this, but they were really handsome so....

I really tried. I thought I'd come to it with fresh ears and none of the baggage with which I first dismissed it, but alas.... I think my major problem is that they are obviously quite accomplished musicians but they just don't groove. Take the bass playing on Rio - it's sort of flashy, but it's also shit! I find his voice over processed and whiney, some of the lyrics are sort of funny, but overall the songwriting is so pedestrian. 'Save a prayer' is a particular bugbear. A horrible dirge. Add to the mix some of the most horrible sax playing from an era of horrible sax playing and you end up with something iconic only for being an emblem of shallowness of its era! If you want good 80's pop that really has survived the test of time listen to Human League.....

Very generic pop. The go-to for examples of eighties pop. I tried to listen to it, but in the end I only heard it.

Kind of difficult album for me because of the 80's production. It must have sounded fresh at the time but now the sound rather annoying. After few listens it kind of grew on me and I founded some parts that I really like, especially bass parts are great and some the vocal lines are interesting too. Still hard to understand why so many people like this album as much as they do.

This is certainly new for me. My only Duran Duran experience is what I’ve heard on the radio. This is definitely the kind of album I don’t care for the first time I hear it, but if I had to listen to it a few times I know I would love it. Each track sounds different but clearly from same creators and they are really going for something out there. It is difficult for me to know what is considered “groundbreaking” for an album from this time period without looking deeper into it but I imagine a lot of this is what help defined 80s synth sound. This could be a case of the originator of a new sound is copied so hard they begin to sound like a copier. After the album played through, a remastered version played and I feel the same about the album. High pitch ethereal sounds are ok for a bit but after a while it becomes grating.

A couple classic 80s pop songs, but otherwise not my thing

I had higher expectations going into this because I enjoy Duran Duran's hits, but this album kinda bored me as a whole. The reliance on incredibly repetitive choruses in many of the songs irked me a bit and made everything feel unoriginal. I did like the quintessential 80s background to every song and the instrumentals definitely helped when songs got boring, but this was a bit of a snooze for me. I can see why the hits are hits. 2.5/5 stars

Sounds okay if you just let it wash over you. Listening to the lyrics isn’t very rewarding. A few decent songs there, but buried under 80s overproduction. I would dance to the hits at a bar.

She kinda stinks I'm afraid

This was not a bad album per se, but I am so sick and tired of the dad rock I have been getting for the last couple days, that I might be harsher than I should be. Also the lyrics to Hungry like the Wolf gave me a visceral reaction. Not my jam, I guess, but at leadst nothing especially jarring

New wave just isn’t my favorite. The singles are objectively good songs but I hate that this normalized non-guitar-driven rock. A few of the songs don’t have the structure or variety to sustain their length. Dislike the piecemeal production that sounds the opposite of live. It’s like the vocals exist totally separately from the music sonically.

Hungry Like a Wolf bring me great joy… the rest, not so much.

Not a lot of heart, soul, or variation to be found here - and I don’t think they intended for that in a cool way. You know it’s tough when the singles that I remember from my childhood dont really invoke a sense of nostalgia. “Save A Prayer” is a slight stand out, but it, as well as “The Chauffer” show up too little too late. Maybe there was a visual component I’m missing out on since this was around MTV times, but other artists dug so much more out of this sound and took it in so many more interesting directions. Just skip this album / 5

I wasn't a huge fan of the 80s bass on this. Hard to articulate what it is, but there was this clean bass sound that was super common in the 80s that I'm not wild about. I did like Hungry Like the Wolf because I'm not a complete monster.

The best Duran Duran song is the cover of Hungry Like the Wolf by Reel Big Fish. The second best is New Moon on Monday, but that's not on this record. Rio is probably 3rd. Save a Prayer is pretty good, and that melody has always stuck in me from childhood. Last track is alright and quite interesting. Everything else on the album is merely ok.

The band so nice they named them twice. Or the band that was so forgettable, they had to throw the name at you twice so you’d remember. That’s the query we will endeavour to answer in the next 45 minutes or so. A few hits on here but a legacy of mixed reviews make this an interesting prospect to start with. Love that instrumental to start. Super weird and it’s kind of shocked me. The chorus stinks and so do the lyrics, but I’m surprised by the underlying musicality here. It gets better as it gets away from that pop chorus. Not a great song, but not a terrible start. Does Duran want a new drug?? Huey Lewis and Rio. Well. As much as I hate myself right now, this song is fun as hell. It’s so incredibly catchy and the musicality has remained from the first track. We dwindle into repetition a little bit, but I can see this one being listened to again. The bass tone on this is fantastic as it has been so far, but I absolutely hate this song. The Mexican Death Match between Hugh Morris and Big Boss Man at Souled Out ‘97 was once described as “A thousand asses.” “Lonely in Your Nightmare” might be 1001. Here it is. The riff is fun. I liked it as a young fella as it’s playful and silly but a little bubblegum for my post 8 year old brain. The odd chanting section was actually kind of great. There are some futuristic ideas here that still sound fairly modern. Even in this jukebox favourite that has been worn down to the nub. Oh no. Oh no no no no. This was a complete snoozer. I have put on my Uncle O’ Grimacey branded sleepwear, blown out my candle on the holder and rolled into a blissful slumber awaiting a New Religion. Oh here we go. Much better. I am rubbing my eyes in an exaggerated fashion. A slightly morose tone?? Mentions of death and electric chairs. This is pretty cool. 3:45 kills. Back to the gutter? Nah it’s not horrible. The marimba section is pretty fun. The rest is very bleh. Doesn’t quite warrant the “Stairway to Hell” joke, but we might be in 80’s pop purgatory. Was this covered or interpolated or something? I don’t know, but that chorus is fairly haunting. I hate the rest of it, but yeah the chorus is quite nice. Man what a cool, eerie intro. Fades into a decent song, but when it first hits, it’s quite good. I have a serious question that I suppose I could google or god forbid, post on a forum. That question is, why did every English band have the same vocal tone? They all sound like this. Anyway. I’ll tweet Morrissey. This is one of the tougher reviews I’ve had to cobble together as far as score. There were insanely cool moments and two really decent songs, and there were stretches of irritation and boredom that are extremely hard to ignore. I beg for half stars, but this one sits right in the middle for me. Good moments, terrible moments, and while she dances on the sun or whatever, I ride into the sunset after delivering another lacklustre review. 2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: My Own Way, New Religion

I just can't stand Duran Duran. I can't say if it's too cheesy or not enough cheesy? I can't get the hype, even for the hit songs. Sorry.

I have a couple of Duran Duran songs on my “Death Scene Music” playlist. I guess outside of that context I think this blows.

3 really good songs, the rest was not good

Ok hungry like the wolf is like one of the best songs ever. But the rest of this joint is a little hard to listen to. I do not like the singing.

2 songs are good. Very good in fact. The others are ones i’d never skip but never put on. Similar to the last album except there’s less good songs. So have to mark it down. 2 stars

Rio is their big one on the album and I've always found it middle of the road. I like how the verses sound like a New Generation WWF wrestler's entrance music. But it's pretty throwaway. Same with Hungry Like The Wolf. The rest of the album is below average, with very few enjoyable moments. New Religion was intriguing, sounds somewhere between Wham! and Bauhaus, not a winning combination. The Chauffeur was the best bit, they should have gone with more of this. It at least had character. Overall, it's monotonous sounds lazily put together. Lyrics and music totally uninspiring.

Alright album. Not very emotional and I didn't feel much listening to it. Had a fine sound but was slightly boring and repetitive. However it was very easy to listen to.

I love the 80s but just not for me!

There are some interesting arrangements and instrumentation. And it’s all mixed very well. Sounds great. I just find it all really shallow for some reason. Not a fan.

not my fav, songs started blending into each other, but good beat

I didn't enjoy this as an album. The singles were good, but frankly any individual song was pretty good by itself, but as a whole album I found it boring and tiresome.

I’ve never really gotten into Duran Duran. It’s fine, but nothing that really excites my ear holes.

Maybe I’d feel differently if this album wasn’t made in the middle of the synth “revolution”. It just sounds so dated. I just can’t get past the hideous keyboard production. The guitars and drums just scream early 80s too. To that end, the song New Religion wouldn’t sound out of place on a mid 80s Rush album (that’s not a good thing for either band by the way). Similar technical feel and sound. I’d be curious if it changes how we hear this dreck if there was an Iron Maiden cover of “Hungry Like the Wolf” just to hear the lyrics without the dated backing music. Won’t be one I revisit - it’s just too much of its time.

Very Glossy. Packed with sounds and flourishes which are Very 1982.

Just because I acknowledge I can see the route this takes to make the list doesn't mean I have to like it.

This is about as 80s as it gets for me. Crooning over a synthesizer. I thought this album was fairly lost until the last track. “The Chauffeur” is compelling and I’ll be coming back to it.

Not great. Dated. The 3 hit songs are okay, but not really my cup of tea.

So 80s, definitely danced to some of these songs at Barberella. Other than hungry like the wolf, these are some obscure 80s songs. Little to 80s for me.

I dont really get the appeal of Duran Duran. I guess they have some decent songs but overall it's just kind of boring to listen to. I'm completely over Hungry Like The Wolf and I don't even think it's particularly good in the first place.

Rio is a 5/5 song and Hungry Like the Wolf is a classic, but the rest of the songs just bloat the album. The vocals are too washed out, the songs are samey and uninteresting. 2.4/5 -> 2/5

Cool electronic pop rock sound, I can see how this would be someone’s vibe but it’s not my favorite thing. I did really enjoy a few songs on here though, with my favorite being “Lonely in Your Nightmare” because

After listening to that one Japan album in this list, all I can say is that this is just a more successful rip off. At least the bass is nice

The 80's produced a lot of great music and it was also a time when exposure to bands and their music increased with the rise of MTV and music videos. This was good and bad, of course the extra medium allowed artists to give face to their fans that otherwise couldn't see them live, with music videos as another creative outlet. A band that truly benefited from this "new" art form was, Duran Duran. Their music videos, not doubt, gained an audience and throw in some controversy with racy content (girls on film...with bikinis? goodness gracious!) and pretty boy teen idol looks and you have a band selling millions of records, sell out shows and teenage girls hysteria to line the pockets of the band and their management. Was the music good? I've never liked the band, their music or their videos and beyond the "hits", I hadn't heard the complete album, Rio, until now. Beyond the hits, the music was boring, average early 80's pop, with no real substance or soul. Can a band be relevant by performing shitty music as a soundtrack to their videos?

Not for me though it’s so linked with that time period you can instantly see in your head the people dancing in the club to it as you listen… or Le Bon getting drowned on a boat in the Rio video….

I never liked Duran Duran at the time, and while the passage of time has made these songs better in my memory I'm still not fond of them. For me this is a rather dull album.

The 80's is proof that drugs do not always improve music. These lyrics barely make sense and I don't get why every song is played slow with double time drums.

Duran Duran is a fine band with some enjoyable songs. But I have no understanding what warrants them to be on this list.

Despite nostalgia blast from 8 year old me, and the 3 strong singles. This is not much cop is it? The musicianship sounds great but again we have the super plastic mega polished 80s production which removes a lot of feeling and interest, Le Bon's voice is frankly crap and the other tracks are filler. Important band and singles, but as an album barely registers.

Fun but not earth shattering. Nostalgic, reminds me of the early MTV era.

As a student I had this uber-80s LP sleeve framed on my wall, but somewhat fraudulently was never been a big fan of the music. The basslines are great and I liked New Religion and The Chauffeur. The vocals however are too thin and forgettable, so I don't think Duran Duran compare that well to peers like Spandau Ballet.

A few good grooves, but mostly kinda middling otherwise

I remember the songs Rio and Hungry like the Wolf. I was not really impressed then, and still now. There really isn't much interesting on this album for me. I remember in the 1980s a video was equal to or even more important than the music. Videos were so new and MTV really had everyone entranced. This band had videos. As I listen, I'm not viewing videos. Musically this just isn't really interesting. Maybe hearing it with old ears makes it that way. I don't know, but I really don't feel anything from this. 2 stars.

Aside from Hungry Like A Wolf - pretty forgettable album. And I think the radio airplay that the aforementioned song gets is the only reason why I know the song. Never was a fan of Duran Duran. Not my style. Vocals are the downfall. The music is pretty cool and pretty layered. But I just don't care for this type of music.

A definitively 80s album, but sometimes too repetitive.

Haha! Hur börjar första låten. Den här synthpoppen från 80-talet är ganska svår. Omslaget är en 5a. Hungry Like a Wolf och Save A Prayer är okej. The Chauffeur är albumets bästa låt. En svag 3a eller stark 2a? Man kan ju lyssna på Depeche Mode istället.

Vet sen tidigare att detta inte är min kopp te. Och första låten bekräftsr det. För mycket 80-tal. Syntsoundet är så tunt. Det är något som saknas. Inget oumph. Den sista låten är bäst, the chauffeur. Inte bara för att skivan sen tog slut.

If my kids ever wanna know what 80s pop music sounded like, I would play them this as a fairly representative example. And then I would quickly explain to them that there was much, much better music that came out of the decade than what this presents.

2.5 stars. Lots of the elements to the songs are cool, with the distorted guitars and bass lines and synths. It definitely sounds like the 80s, but hardly any songs stand out. Even "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" kind of blend into the rest of the album. "Last Chance on a Stairway" sounded nice. It's all fine.

I ended up liking this a bit more than I was expecting. The bass in particular is great. But ultimately the songs aren't that great and I'm not a fan of the vocals.

I’ll give them this. They’ve spent the last 40 years working their guts out. The songs are decent and they’re good musicians. But seriously? You have 1000 albums. This isn’t one of them.

Remember this album. Disappointing in 1982 and disappointing now…3 good songs out of 9. Better than nothing..especially these days. I come from the era of the album…so there is a bias. Back then there was rarely any more than one or two duds/album..if any. Do like the Nagel album art they often used. I’m sure Patrick did too…popularity of this band helped him to sell millions.

Not even perfect cover art can make me eager listen to this record on any rotation. The US mix on a few of the tracks made me pretty uncomfortable.

Dit album etaleert de magie van de 80s, maar is tegelijk ook de belichaming van het failliet der muzikaal vernuft in dat decennium. Die magie zit hem erin dat ondanks dat jaren 80 popmuziek vaak van plastic lijkt, waarin emoties worden verstopt onder een dikke laag (vaak ongeïnspireerde) synths, toch gewoon klikt. Het is bij definitie hét genre wat belachelijk goed meegaat met de tijd, en vandaag de dag nog steeds sturend is voor de top 40 (zie Harry Styles, The Weekend). Ik vind de lyrics louter abominabel, de white jazz saxofoontjes werken me op de zenuwen, en ze proberen een lak aan passie tevergeefs goed te maken met een lading pseudo-gevoelige synths. Dat gebrek aan hartstocht is het best hoorbaar op 'Lonely in Your Nightmare', die liet m'n harde plassert na Parliament wel weer in z'n schulp kruipen. Waar dat een muziekfeest was, is dit vooral een slechte aflevering van Miami Vice. Maar zoals ik al zei, toch kan ik niet ontkennen dat de plaat mij zo af en toe best vermaakte. Het is de toverkracht. De schizofrenie slaat direct in bij het openings- en titelnummer 'Rio', wat een soort proto-Toy Box is, maar het is een earworm waarvan ik van vrees dat hij nog wel even blijft buurten in m'n oor. Prima popsong. De rest van kantje 1 was tenenkrommend, en 'Hungry Like the Wolf' gaat voorop in de polonaise. Wat een fucking irritant nummer, en de lyrics zijn smeerlapperij van de bovenste plank. Kantje 2 heeft wat meer te bieden van de glorie waar de 80s bekend om stond. Allereerst de bassline, die oprecht een lichtpuntje was op een voor de rest instrumenteel lackluster album. 'New Religion' demonstreert die kwaliteit, en is ook direct m'n favoriet van het album. Spooky synths, zoals een The Cure dat in z'n goede dagen kon, en een creatieve bassline (die vanaf 3:40 is echt geil). Het zet een sfeer neer die wél echt aanvoelt. Die stap weg van het artificiële geneuzel op kantje 1 wordt voortgezet in 'Save a Prayer', waarna ik de band toch nog wel een tikkeltje gevoel toedicht. 'The Chauffeur' sluit een verdienstelijke albumzijde af, waarin de band zich volledig laat onderdompelen in de electronica. Het rijmt wat meer met muziek van Depeche Mode of Gary Numan dan de rest van het album, en zorgt voor een welkome switch - ook al was het wat laat. Sterke melodie, en het jostiband fluitje doet me denken aan 'The Fool On The Hill' van The Beatles, dus ik ben tevreden. De verdeeldheid over de band - en 80s popmuziek in het algemeen - wordt dus echt gereflecteerd in een erbarmelijke eerste helft van het album, en een puike tweede. Ik geef het toch een lichte voldoende, vanwege de fascinerende albumhoes. 6/10 Highlights: Rio New Religion The Chauffeur

Sigh, I didn't want to hear anymore rap albums, so hurray! This popped up, but, haha, this is such soft pop rock FM radio blah-ness... I don't even want to give it two stars, ugh, sorry. Maybe try stars since the WOLF song got drilled into me by MTV.

This almost felt like an album that I would immediately forget and then never think of again… but then I did think the last song was very cool.

There are three songs on this album. I think they each played three times. This does not make Classic.

Rio? Prawdopodobnie Brazylia. Jednak to dziewczyna co tańczy na plaży. Całkiem fajna okładka. Podoba mi się styl grafiki. Na Spotify tylko wersja kolekcjonerska - strasznie długa. Niezapadający w pamięć album. Raczej do niego nie wrócę. Żadna piosenka nie wyróżnia się.

Never really knew what the hype was around this band. Although, I wasn't born at the time, so that probably explains it. I like Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf, but the other tracks all sound very similar to me. Slightly annoying vocal style too. Significant enough album, but not for me.

I don't really like 80s distorted rock. It's a preference issue.

Loved Hungry Like a Wolf and a couple others, but this genre just doesn’t resonate with me. Synths and drum machines feel soulless.

Jury is out on which way those guys'll go. They're a lot of fun, and James Taylor is one of the most proficient bass players in the UK at the moment, giving them a funky edge.

A quite OK album from a genre that I generally dislike (new wave/early 1980s synth pop). I still don't like the overall sound most of the time and also how simple the album is musically. I can't really give it more than 2.5 for this album.

As a Gen-Xer, I can't help but find something irresistible about Duran Duran's sound and Simon's vocals specifically, no matter how formulaic and shallow their songs get. Still, aside from some from the nostalgia of remembering the Rio video on MTV (which was more interesting than the actual song) and listening to the few other standouts on this album, there's not much to get excited about.

I liked hungry like a wolf as a song The style of the vocals just really doesn’t appeal to me if I’m honest. It’s just singing the same note in a British accent and it’s quite annoying.

i do like how this album sounds but a lot of the songs sound the same. its good, the vibe is good, but it's hard for me to differentiate songs and they tend to drag on for way longer than necessary. (last second added note, maybe it feels dragged out bc a lot of the songs don't seem to have a traditional chorus?) i was like "oh this is the hungry like the wolf album" and then listened to the album and it was just another 40 minutes of hungry like the wolf. like i had to go back to every single song to remind myself of which one it was to rank them because i couldn't remember anything of substance to differentiate them. sad to say i think abbey road is a better album

I mean it’s okay, but I was never a fan first time around. I enjoyed hearing Save a Prayer again, but that’s it.

I don't know why but I found this very annoying. Good thing they saved that prayer, because that spared them from being relegated to the worst of the worst.

I remember MTV was a big fan of Duran Duran during the early 80's. I was not. I think the 2 most popular songs are OK, but not really my type of music. Consider it to be a disco/pop sound. Rio and Hungry Like a Wolf are both decent songs, but nothing I would seek out. This album didn't do much for me and nothing stood out other then the overplayed MTV songs. OK to listen to 30 years later, but still not a fan. 2

the last two tracks of the album, saving a prayer and chauffeur, were my favs but i wasn't miserable during the songs before. this was funkier than i expected. i've heard of the band, but wasn't sure what it would sound like. the cover gave me nothing, no hints.

Too much, sorry world

It's a Duran Duran album. Pleasant enough - not as good as their first, not as bad as some later efforts. The tunes are catchy, but am not sure how this ended up on this list. I think you probably had to be there - I was too busy listening the The Fall at the time, I suspect.

A classic album? Seriously? Style, yes. Not sure about the substance. With no shame, this was SO familiar back in '82. I even had the poster on my wall. Four decades later and it was a pleasant morning singalong, but nothing more. I quite like the hint of something more sinister on Save a Prayer and Lonely in Your Nightmare. It wasn't all sugar gum pop. But it belongs in a time capsule and will probably stay there for me.

Familiar with a couple radio hits from this album. Duran Duran is generally not my style so the other songs all ran into each other for me.

Feels very dated. A few hits, but even those feel like the shallow side of new wave. I like new wave, but this is hardly the best it had to offer.

The 80s was a dark time for music. Some catchy songs but overall was not a fan.

I guess I'm the right age to have grown up hating Duran Duran and everything they stand for. There's still something in it that grates. It feels linked to the Thatcherism of the era. It's impossible to listen to them without seeing that video of them sat on a yacht in the sunshine looking like twats. So in reappraisal with a little distance? I didn't hate it as much as I expected. How's that for faint praise? Some of the singles were played so much when I was of Radio One listening age that there's a nostalgic element I'm not going to be able to separate from the music. In the end though, it's a bit shit. I'm not going to listen to it again.

This one's definitely an album built around its singles. Not much of interest here, but Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf are strong enough to make Duran Duran one of the more notable groups of the 80s.

I know that sometimes happens in songs but this one has no consistency. "The Chauffeur": Good tune ruined by crap lyrics. We often talk about quality over quantity. Well this album delivers some good stuff, some crap and filler and it doesn’t make up for quality with quantity. It should have been four songs on an EP! My Rating: **
