Great 80s album it’s iconic

Some noteworthy songs. But overall a 3/5. Perhaps, I am not into the whole "RIO" style. I had to actually look up what this meant. This album perfectly defines it.

Pretty nice, but nothing that immediately caught my attention. I'm a bit confused why some songs have more plays than others, because they were not necessarily better in my opinion.

I'm suprised this is on here! A perfect slice of 80s pop selling the dream of dusky sunsets in tropical islands with beautiful people. It's difficult to listen to this as music rather than what it represents. I liked it at the time but can't help but compare it with other albums that are so much better. Why have a Warhol when you can have a Van Gogh?

That's funny! This album seems to be hunting me, it follows me everywhere as if it really wanted me to love it!  Much have been said about the musicianship of Duran Duran bandmembers; allmusic claims that, curiously, all or almost all of of them followed a career in hard rock. This is not surprising to me, as they play a form radio-ready pop, yes, but the "touch" they have on their instruments has definitely a hard rock edge. Ok, they are not Toto, but some of you dear readers will probably know what I mean.  The title track opens up the whole thing all while letting us know that we are in for a catchy ride, complete with sax. The slap bass against funky guitar and synths on New Religion is just monumental (actually the bass playing is monumental almost everywhere across this record); then Simon Le Bon gives rap a cute try. Save A Prayer is the classic 80s make out ballad; do they still write songs like this? Does people still give any time at all to making out? Hungry Like A Wolf comes with a singalong chorus and I wonder how much air did it get at the time, while Hold Back The Rain plays a similar trick. There is something in Last Chance On The Stairs that reminds me a bit of the James Bond theme (or was it Wild Boys?), which is not really bad because that is a great song.  As I pointed out elsewhere, this is a really kind of weird record to me: if I listen to it once in a while I tend to pay more and more attention and like it more at every play, but if I play it too often I easily get bored. Who knows!  I'm heading now into the Greatest Hits, I want to listen to A View To A Kill, Wild Boys, and Notorious. 

Ok, first off... The bassist, John Taylor, plays the hell out of every track on this album. I never realized how much funk he brings to the group. I think his performances on this album are a subtle, but significant factor in just how catchy Rio is. In fact, kudos to the John and Roger for putting together a great rhythm section, to counterbalance the otherwise light synth and guitar parts. The other person whose contribution can hardly be overstated is Simon Le Bon, who is singing his heart on every track. I'd point to "Last Chance On The Stairway" as being the standout overall performance on the album, although there are admittedly much greater pop songs there. For my tastes though, I've got to cast my 'best track' vote for "The Chauffeur". It's got a peculiar allure that is unsettling enough to sound novel and really lingers in your memory. But honestly, it's all great. Every last track on the album is good (at a minimum) and most are extraordinary. It's definitely an album that everyone should hear at least once.

One of my absolute favorite albums. The memories this brings back are priceless, but some of these songs that were not overplayed on the radio in the 80s are now also some of my favorites. I especially love “The Chauffeur.” 10/10

A classic with obvious highlights in the megahits 'Rio' and 'Hungry Like the Wolf'. Shoutout to the mean bass on 'My Own Way' and 'New Religion' - that shit slaps! Also amuses me that 'The Chauffeur' is the perfect song for the movie Drive - written 30 years prior.

Rio is one of the greatest album openers of the 80’s. The energy, the composition…. THE SAXOPHONE…. Jesus! The songwriting is beyond great, Le Bon sounds amazing and the band plays their hearts out. I almost cried due to the sheer emotions on display in Save a Prayer. It’s worth noting that ⅗ of the band is surnamed Taylor. Without being related. A British band if there ever was one!

Perfect album.

The singles Rio and Hungry like the Wolf are straight banging classics. The rest is a bit too synth heavy for me.

Great album. Worth it just for "Rio," "Hungry Like the Wolf," and "Save a Prayer," but I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the album, especially "New Religion," which was surprisingly funky. If you like new wave, then this album's for you (but you probably already knew that).

The perfect 80s synth-pop-funk album. Not enough credit is given to bassist, John Taylor, whose funky bass lines make this album & much of DD's catalog more than lip gloss pop. Rio sits on my top 20, and is the perfect listen start to finish. The Chauffeur is haunting & sultry, and the video is film noir erotica. I adore this album. 5/5.

Big fan of Duran Duran back in the day, but probably never listened to this one from start to finish before. It's got a lot of their great early tracks and you just can't mistake their signature sound. Was a very enjoyable listen.

Very briefly: Duran Duran popped up and I thought to myself: Ah yes, a nice 3* album, just the standard 80s. I was so terribly wrong, I think this is an incredible album. I really had no idea anymore. How did I dismiss this all these years as 'just another 80's band' The bass, the melodies, everything on this album is just right. I'm not skipping a song. Personal Favorites: My Own Way and New Religion 4.5*

Sounds like Roxy Music getting rimjobs. "Hungry Like The Wolf" is an all-timer.

I had this album as a little kid so it is heavily intertwined with my memories. Some of the saxophone is a little saccharin, but the keyboard and vocal sound characteristics seem timeless-- especially in light of the advent of new synthpop over the last decade especially. Hungry Like the Wolf and Save a Prayer were the ones that I remember most singing with friends on the bus or loving at the school dance. HLTW is still a windows-down, crank it up song while all the kids at the red light are desperately Shazamming it.

Hard not to get carried away with this one, to get out the hairspray, don your sports coat, sleeves rolled up and switch the desk fan on to full whilst belting out 'Rio!' No? Just me then....

Top Songs: Rio, Hungry Like The Wolf, Hold Back The Rain, The Chauffeur Very fun. Several bops. All-around good album. 4/5

Duran Duran is one of those bands I always enjoy when they're on but haven't really sat down and listened to much. This album is really great though. Catchy, and 80s feeling but in a way that doesn't feel overly dated.

New wave boos are up and down this album. It does suffer from sounding too similar throughout. Enjoyable even if you aren’t the biggest fan of that ‘80s style.

I didn't need to listen to the hits (though I did) so I spent more ear on the remainder. Maybe it was the recent watching of Stranger Things but I found myself loving Lonely in Your Nightmare and being enthralled with The Chauffeur. Oh, the classic statement piece that wanders and plays as the closer. It worked!

Amazing as always

Some of these reviews (see the last couple) are based on my memory and a few tracks of "relistening" to reacquaint myself. I know nothing about this band and I couldn't tell you anything about this record except the title track, so I'm going to listen all the way through. Because I should know more about this band's catalog. Impressions: Holy shit, actual musicianship. This isn't programmed MIDI bullshit. This is such a classic record. I like the cover. What was once cool, became dated, and now I can't tell if this record is from 1982 or 2022. What drums are real or triggered live vs. programmed. Hard to tell, but this band does a great job of making synthesized music have a lot of life. It sets them out from their peers who we've already reviewed on this list. The bassist rips. They're the reason why the record has so much life. Great rhythm section. That's something, again, that doesn't get said about a lot of bands from this genre/era.

I’m not a huge fan of this genre, but I like Duran Duran. That has to mean something right? Couple of if their best songs are on this album.

Without proper knowledge on the band you’d believe that Duran Duran were just a singles band. I used to think they were a boy band, probably because of all the flashy music videos. But rio proves that Duran Duran is not just a band to be shrugged at. This is a MUST LISTEN even if this list was merely 100 albums in my opinion. Obviously you have the amazing singles, not many songs are as iconic as hungry like the wolf! Rio and my own way is one of those 1,2 opening punches on albums that leaves you in awe that the same band was able to make two songs this good. Then the wistful save a prayer, the album’s ‘anchor’, its centrepiece (though it’s the penultimate track), most people will know it and everyone should love it. New religion should’ve been a single as well, honestly I don’t get why it wasn’t, LOVE that bass line and that chorus. But none of these songs are actually close to my favourite, the chauffeur, Rio’s off putting last moments putting you on edge until Simon le Bon screams ‘sing blue silver’ offering a euphoric sensation as you complete this masterpiece. There are so many covers of this song including the iconic deaftones one but none have put me on edge as the original or the acoustic demo of this track. The only three tracks I haven’t mentioned (Lonely in your nightmare, hold back the rain and last chance on the stairway) are admittedly slightly weaker but they fit in perfectly. If the other songs didn’t exist and it was these three songs released as singles and a bunch of filler it could still skim being a 3/5 and likely score 3 hits. Critically this was panned on release honestly I’m not surprised, this will always happen with pop music. As soon as the frustration with their commercial acclaim goes honest opinions form. For me early Duran Duran are something really special, ignore all that ordinary world crap, this album is where it’s at 5/5.

Never liked the new romantics, as a young lefty I thought it was mostly escapist, vacuous, synthetic nonsense. 40 years later and while my toe is tapping to Rio and Hungry like the wolf, I can't say I have warmed much to Duran Duran. Not for me

05/25/2022 Super fun from start-to-finish. An absolute blast to listen to!

The soundtrack to junior high for me. Terrible years, I don't think anyone enjoys being 13, especially in retrospect. But even that can't taint my love for Duran Duran; I'm finding that I still know every word of every song. Even the album cover is the 80's crystalized in one image. It is impossible to listen to these songs and not see the videos in my mind's eye. MTV propelled Duran Duran into superstardom and they likewise made MTV central to teenage life. So. Many. Memories.

Quite repetitive, most songs sounded the same

Not totally bad but damn those 80’s sounds

Wolf is one of my favourite songs and one of the most iconic of the 80s, but the rest of the album, aside from its unique production, fails to produce another memorable song. The production and layering of the vocals also becomes quite irritating by the end. Not a bad album, but certainly is lacking to be considered a great.

Great album, has a few big hits that even today still roam the music radios. The synth pop style is not for everyone but I do like it, it puts me in a good mood and makes for an enjoyable listening

Genre: New Romantic 3/5 Duran Duran's best album, Rio, is just fine, but at the same time features some of the biggest and best rock singles of the decade: the title track, Rio, and, probably DD's biggest song, Hungry Like the Wolf. Opening the album with the title track is a tremendous way to start it, and personally I think Rio is their best song. The quality of the chorus, the disco arrangment is catchy and upbeat, and Simon Le Bon's passionate vocal is very well done. Hungry Like the Wolf, a classic, is also fairly good in its own right. Bouncy, sexy, and fun. However, beyond that, Duran Duran doesn't give us very much. The disco feel and new wave gloss is there throughout, but it's not very interesting. The last half of the album is just fairly bland synthpop with nothing much to offer. The one bizarre moment in this album was following up Hungry Like the Wolf with Hold Back the Rain, two songs played back-to-back that sound almost exactly alike. Took me out of the album a bit. Overall, though, the album is inoffensive new wave/pop rock that definitely has a couple of very good songs.

Maybe you had to be there. For someone like me how doesn't really have much nostalgia for the 80s, it's just too pop and 80s electronic drums and keyboards for me.

Critics didn't know what to do in regards to Duran Duran. Did they not expect them to be utterly influential to the point of being considered one of the first standard bearers of a nascent music video channel? I don't know about you but this album is a good example of not believing everything you read. Favorites: Rio, Lonely in Your Nightmare, Hungry Like the Wolf, Push Back the Rain, Last Chance on the Subway.

The music is just okay, it doesn't do anything to excite me or want to listen to it again. Hungry like the wolf is the best song on the album.

This was a pretty big deal when it came out so I get why it's on this list. Something I could easily do without though. A couple of pretty cool songs surrounded by by generic 80s synth-pop. Lyrics are a step above but it's still pretty middle of the road. 3.5 stars

This album was released over 15 years before I was born, but I've heard of it before. 1. Rio - Obviously have heard this one before. First encounter with this song was on Glee - happy to say the original is better. A hit. Saved. 8/10 2. My Own Way - I liked it, but it didn't have the same punch as Rio did. 6/10 3. Lonely in Your Nightmare - Big fan of the melody and instrumentation. Love that main lyric "'Cause you're lonely in your nightmare, let me in". Saved. 7/10 4. Hungry Like The Wolf - Another song I originally heard on Glee. I know Duran Duran were 80s heartthrobs but Darren Criss and Matt Bomer did a pretty good performance of this one, and looked great doing it.... That being said, it's obviously a catchy tune but not my favourite. I loved the guitar at 2:25, though. 7/10 5. Hold Back the Rain - Not my favourite, felt very similar to Hungry Like the Wolf just... less catchy? 5/10 6. New Religion - Really liked this one. Saved. 7/10 7. Last Chance on the Stairway - Liked it. Nice song 8. Save a Prayer - Honestly, this song was too long. I was ready for it to end at the halfway mark. But it's certainly not a bad song, just not one I would seek out again. Great hook, though. 6.5/10. If it was shorter, it'd be a 7. 9. The Chauffeur - I liked that this was different from the other songs of the album (which were getting a bit samey). Cool tune. 7/10 Overall - the bass slaps. No bad songs. Didn't wow me though. Bättre än jag trodde

This album is really underrated. Mostly by me. I've gone through a lot of these 80s albums (because I don't like greatest hits packages), looking for little lost gems and usually I get a lot of hard white turds. But in this case, not so. This was a pretty excellent listen and I would do it again, without shame.

Slick, haughty and perhaps even a touch forbidding - Duran Duran in their pomp sound like a band that simply didn't produce music for the lumpenproletariat. But before you dismiss this as the soundtrack to boardroom cocaine binges, think again; the boys knew how to write a brilliant pop song, even when mucking around with the rule book. All the big songs on here - 'Rio', 'Hungry...' shimmer and shine; perhaps even better are 'Save a Prayer' with its wonky synth riff, and 'The Chauffeur', a startling slice of pop modernism. 'Rio' still sounds a bit like the future.

"This album is...hard white turds." - Craig Moorhead. Harsh, yo! Anywho, yeah I had a good time with this. Certainly the first and only time I've ever listened to the whole thing as, for some reason, I don't believe my brother ever owned this record or else we would've listened to it backwards and forwards in the car on family beach trips. (Like we did with "Purple Rain." My parents are cray.) So all I had to go on is the MTv barrage that was "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf." Those two hold up, but as mentioned there are some other non-turds here that were never on my radar and really add to the experience. I liked "New Religion" even though I don't really like religions, so that was cool. And, tune aside, "The Chauffeur" is a great title for any medium. I'd happily listen again. Taking off a star for all that slappy bass.

Surprisingly I didn't like the album nearly as much as I thought I would have. All in all I still liked it, but I thought I would've rated this much higher. I thought that his voice began to get grating after the first couple songs, and that songs tended to lack punch. Other than that though, I really liked the composition and the sound they were going for, even if it did little for me. Favorite track: Rio

Weirdly, I kinda like this one. I am hearing a kind of Yes-like vocal and it just feels kind of right. I feel like I will come back to it as much as I have Magazine's Self-Titled. Highlights: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9.

3/27/2022 Today's Album: "Rio" by Duran Duran - This 80s synth record pops off with a very instrumentally exciting and blood-pumping ballad named Rio. It's your typical Toto's Rosanna, meaning it's one of those movie soundtrack songs that popped off in the 80s named after a girl that the lead singer is horny about. Great track, but it's something I've noticed in 80's music that I think is pretty overplayed. However, there is an excellent bass and saxophone solo that really gives this track some shine. The vocalist is also really similar to that Tears for Fears / Billy Idol / Depeche Mode sound that is very popular in this time period as well. The next track My Own Way is a pretty groovy dance track that really shines in it's pre-chorus and has a ton of layered staccato parts that sound really cool all together. This song feels much less repetitive than the last and the band kind of pops off at the end so the repetitiveness of the chorus matters less to me. Hungry Like the Wolf is a huge hit and I can see why. It's a really flashy pop anthem and, despite it's creepy subject matter, I have never really gotten too sick of it. It's hard to point out to many other highlights in this record because it has a very consistent (and somewhat generic) 80s sound, but the highlights I have listed are songs that I felt like broke through the formulaic nature of this LP. Overall, I thought this record was decent and had a lot of energy, but there wasn't a lot new to chew on and I felt like I had heard all of these sounds done before and/or better. Quintessential British new-wave

Fun album with some good songs

Okay, Duran Duran is definitely a guilty pleasure for me. And it's not that they're BAD...but would I put them on the upper echelon of greatness? Is every track S-tier? Definitely not. Did I enjoy this album more than some albums from huge legendary musicians and bands, though? Hell yeah. What can I say? I have a weakness for 80s synth-pop and danceable shit. It's glossy in a totally delightful way. I defy anyone to not enjoy "Rio" (an underrated karaoke classic) and Hungry Like the Wolf (very tame sexual references by today's standards but probably scandalous at the time to have a lady moaning on the track). Giving this a bonus star for enjoyability. Also because my dad called Duran Duran "boring" and someone's gotta counteract that energy. Take that, dad. :)

That new wave old Duran hits different

After a respectable first album, Rio is when Duran Duran really got going. Everything fits well together here; lead singer Simon Le Bon doesn't always hit the correct notes, but what he lacks in intonation he makes up with tone that is uniquely suited for this kind of music. John and Roger Taylor (no relation) are a tightly locked, always grooving rhythm section - the title track's bassline is especially iconic, and John Taylor's playing is on a whole new level. Meanwhile Andy Taylor's (still no relation) very tasteful and restrained guitar playing adds some welcome rock overtones. And Nick Rhodes' keyboard parts are not only embellishment, but are totally integrated into these songs. This album more than any other defined the new romantic sound of the early 80s, and set an antithesis to the then-prevalent punk movement. Every single track here is worth a listen, but the standouts are Rio, Save A Prayer, and Hungry Like the Wolf. It's truly iconic for its era. 5/5

This is quintessential new wave music. I don't hate it but I also don't love it. It's missing something that would push it to greater heights. So it just sounds a bit middle of the road to me.

Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. They are a real embodiment of the 80s. Random thought, but the last song "The Chauffeur" has a really cool sound and seems like its just begging for a modern remake with a big drop on the chorus.

5/10 Falls into the category of music from my parents’ era that my parents don’t particularly enjoy, so I went in with low expectations. Has some catchy songs, hungry like the wolf is good, but every track goes on for way too long and the vocal performance is pretty obnoxious at times

I know Duran Duran only by reputation and I was expecting much more from this album. In the end, it's just a boring new wave.

Solid album. I knew some of the songs but didn’t realize it was Duran Duran. The whole album feels like a concentrated drop of the ‘80s to me. My favorites were Lonely in Your Nightmare and Hungry Like the Wolf.

Pretty good 80'd new wave.

I remember buying this when I was 10 and now here I am at 52 and it still sounds astonishing. The production has been ignored on this but chapeau to Colin Thurston, this is sensational production. And I have never even heard of him. He would be worshipped nowadays full of sprinkles and sparkles and whooshes so much going on here. To me the Duran sound is right up there with New Order & The Cure, I remember wishing they would release an instrumental of this LP - nothing wrong with Simon Le Bon’s vocals, they fit perfectly, and I love the New Romantic lyrics, just that it would be fascinating to listen to the band & production. This is way beyond a boy band, John Taylor’s funky surfing bass high up in the mix, Andy Taylor’s brilliant inventive drumming, Nick Rhodes’unique mysterious way ahead of the time synths. It’s cool it’s upbeat it’s fun it takes you up a level, it’s the sound of holidays in blue skies & sunshine when you’re on top of the world or maybe that’s down to the amazing videos. I love the artwork, it invites you in to this exotic dreamworld music. I have got drunk and danced and laughed and sung with friends to this many many times, this is the LP that inevitably is played late on. It still sounds fresh not dated but I’d love to know what I’d make of this if I heard it first time at my age - will never know. But for me still at my age this is a perfect album.

This is a great album but not perfect; it does get a bit formulaic in parts but you can't deny the greatness of "Rio", "The Chauffeur", and my favorite, "Save a Prayer".

I’ve know a few songs of Duran Duran from the radio, only never took the time to look up an full album. I liked this one, the whole album has a bit the same sound and still a good amount of variety between the songs. Favourite songs: - My own way - Hungry like the wolf - Save a prayer

Tongue, Lips, Fangs. I always feel like I need a shower after a session with Duran Duran. Perhaps some therapy, too. And not concerning things exclusively sexual either, although this LP might as well come with a package of condoms tucked in each sleeve. The 'Rio' LP isn’t particularly about women. It’s mostly about the lyricist- which in this case is credited to the entire band- about his/their emotional digression, identically chronicled on both sides. A musically exciting opener- ‘Rio’ and ‘New Religion’- sides one and two, respectively, and we’re dancing across the Rio Grande; and, whatever the fuck is going on in ‘New Religion,’ I never figured it out myself. Great bass and synth, though, and complete with a crazy sax ending on ‘Rio.’ So far, so fun. Then, on the 2nd and 7th tracks we’re introduced to some kind of issue in the lyricists’ relationship, and on the 3rd track of side one his/their desire for the relationship to work. But things take a horrible turn for the worse on tracks 4 and 8, when he/they get as horny as a hungry wolf (‘I’m on the hunt, I’m after you’) and despite the lovely atmospheric music he/they plead, ‘Don’t say a prayer for me NOW. Save it ‘til the morning after.’ Finally, the sad denouement is revealed on ‘Hold Back The Rain.’ This dysfunction will probably continue unabated because the burning fire has somehow become too familiar and, perversely, more comfortable than putting it out. Like the opener of side two, I’m also not entirely sure what’s going on as the LP closes. Some drama being played out, imaginary or actual, between chauffeur and client, possibly a high priced prostitute? And exactly what does the lyric, ‘Sing Blue Silver’ refer to? Stranger still, check out the video for this last song. It only adds to the overall madness of the already awkward sounding music. Don’t be fooled by Duran Duran’s pretty boy looks and casual manner. Appearances can be deceiving. In a 1964 issue of 'Melody Maker,' a question was posed about that primordial pack of British wolves led by Brian Jones: Would You Let Your Daughter Go With A Rolling Stone? Well, if it’s a choice between them or Duran Duran on 'Rio,' I’m going to have to choose a Stone. The Stones merely sang about mayhem. Duran Duran seems to be actually executing it every night. Surely law enforcement and mental health professionals can join forces and arrange some kind of involuntarily committal to psychiatric care both for the band’s own sake and for the welfare of the rest of society. Shame, that bassist sure can play.

I’ve been hit or miss on their singles over the years. Can’t say I’ve ever front to backed an album of theirs before. It wasn’t packed with bangers but it was okay.

Almost want this on my best albums just for the cover. But the music really bores me. Judging only the 9 first songs on the original album, this is a 1 The deluxe version adds so much good stuff, and actually makes the songs good, I can't comprehend why the difference is so big. "My Own Way" - Manchester Square Demo and "The Chauffeur (Blue Silver)" - Early Version are really good, but the originals are just straight trash.

Legendary 80s album. Still holds up.

I haven't really listened to Duran Duran past "Rio" and "Hungry Like A Wolf". I'm not a huge fan of this style of New Wave, but this album pretty good. Other than the 2 hits, I liked "Save A Prayer" the most. 2.5

A cup of kickass riffs. 500 grams of irresistible grooves. 10 slices of hooks that are either terrible or doesn't age well. A can of dull, whiny vocals. And finally, a desired amount of layers of deliciously interesting production instrumentals. Mix everything careful until it's thick enough for future molds to sneak in. And behold! A typical new-wave album! An odd yet perfectly sane mixture of delicious and repulsive.

I never got big into Duran Duran when I was growing up. I will give them big props, their sound is very 80s but it's definitely good at what it does. I was very impressed with the non hits of this one for the most part. They were all very solid... except for the Chauffeur. Yikes. Not sure what they were going for there, but that was a real bad song to end the album with. "Save A Prayer," THAT is an album closer. The Chauffeur felt like a b-side to me. It was a real filler. Kind of left a bad taste in my mouth about the whole album. So I did enjoy it (on the strength of the hit songs I did know), but not as much as I had hoped and I blame that a lot on that last song. It's not very to do that, I guess, but I calls 'em like I sees 'em.

I'm not sure where I place Duran Duran in the whole New Wave genre. They are not the same caliber as The Cars, Blondie, The Police (to name a few). But then maybe I'm just more partial to the rock side vs. synth side of New Wave. I loved Hungry Like the Wolf from the first time I heard it as a kid. Rio is alright (not as good as its popularity) but I like Hold Back the Rain more. The rest of the album kind of blends together or is forgettable. Even their other big hit, Save a Prayer - meh. It's fine and a nice trip down memory lane but I'm not going back for more.

Ahaha, this is an album I know so well. I was an eleven-year-old girl when this came out, so there you go. Listening now, I think this album is as good as it ever was. It's a New Romantic classic, and a still a really fun listen. Rio is probably the strongest, most perfectly crafted album Duran Duran ever made, the album that made them stars. Credit where it's due: John Taylor is a legitimately great bassist, delivering a surprising, funky groove that a lot of English bands did not have. You pull Taylor out of Duran Duran and you have a considerably less interesting band. The best songs on this album are the ones that lean into that groove, like the title song and "New Religion." Taylor's funky bass plays well against Andy Taylor's equally strong, energetic riffs and Roger Taylor’s crisp, punchy drumming style. Nick Rhodes' keyboard arrangements are elegant and exotic sounding, with a vibe straight out of Bowie. Simon Le Bon had a lot of charisma as a front man and his voice works well with these songs, even if he wasn't as strong a vocalist as some of his contemporaries. The album is book ended with two excellent songs in "Rio" and "The Chauffeur." The rest of the songs vary in quality, but the overall flow from beginning to end is really good. The danceable stuff is where the band excels, but the ballads are also still lovely to listen to, with some of the prettiest, most stylish keyboard arrangements out at that time. Reminds me of dead mans party. This is totally what I would listen to as a teen in the 80s.

Classic album with multiple favorites already on my list. The lyrics on the favorites make less sense when you read them. Seems to be more about the catchy / familiar rhythm. Hungry like the wolf is fun on Rock Band (drums). The main tracks will stay in regular rotation.

The hits hit hard. But other than that it kid of feels like 2/3s of the album are forgettable filler.

Embarrassed Embarrassed. When I have had the original vinyl of an album that has been sent by the App, I have stated this with a sense of pride. I knew it was just a matter of time until I would prefer that nobody knew.

I only knew the 2 hits, which I wasn't too crazy about, something about the yachts and the hairdos in the videos maybe. The rest is pretty bland and commercial 80s synth-pop. They owe a lot to MTV.

It’s hard to believe I used to love this band, I must have listened to this record a thousand times when it first released. I even had a nice Patrick Nagel print hanging in my bedroom. But now I find Simon Lebon’s voice annoying AF and the arrangements very cheesy, esp that 80’s sax, ugh. They only song that I still like is Save a prayer because it’s the least formulaic sounding. The other new wave pop groups of the era did better work and don’t sound nearly as dated now, eg OMD, The Cure, Tears for Fears, The The etc.

Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf are both good. Everything else sort of ran together. This was fine.

Fun and fresh, iconic sounds of the 80s. Rio and Hungry Like A Wolf are the obvious biggest hitters on this album, Save a Prayer was also enjoyable, other songs don't have quite the same impact.

I don't really enjoy the 80s synth wave, so probably i won't listen to it ever again. I have to admit tho: the bass guitar is really interesting, with a lot of funky influences, quite funny to hear. The last track, The chauffeur, is the most interesting to me: really experimental, I also heard some Kraftwerk influences so it's definitely the reason I gave 4 instead of 3.

As a child of the 80's this took me right back. Rio was always a favourite Duran Duran song and it's also got Hungry like the Wolf what's not to love.

First time going through a Duran Duran album in full. Strangely enough. I think they've got great songs, but I also believe I've enjoyed other bands' covers of them more than I seem to enjoy the real deal. Even so, there's good stuff on here. Doesn't drag on either.

Oh Dear, What can I say, My wife of 36 years was a Spandau fan so the Duranies never got a look in in my house! Big Simon and the boys were obviously good at their jobs and the image worked for them in the '80's but in terms of longevity and musical prowess I would always stick with Tony Hadley, The Brothers Kemp et al. Not one in my collection but I suppose that "Rio" & " Hungry Like the Wolf" have some credit. don't think this is one for my top 1000!

New Wave Second British Invasion. Duran Duran's second album made them the success they are, and with four hits on the album, it's clear to see why. Great 80's album.

Recognised few of the tracks, seems to have their big ones on. Rio, Hungry Like The Wolf, Save A Prayer. Not really my bag though, I like the songs to the extent that they're classics but I never have been a massive fan other than that. As an album it wasn't anything special. 2/5

Surprisingly delightful. I had mentally filed Duran Duran as "that ur-80s band" and never sat down to really listen to them. This album is excellent - it's fun, and sentimental, and has some real bops.

The songs are catchy, but they're sort of like candy - they taste good but there's no substance. The lyrics are inane if you really listen to them, the melodies simplistic. I don't think this belongs on an albums you must hear before you die list. Not a bad album, but certainly not one of the all-time greats either. 3 stars.

Ha, expected to hate this but it's a riot

I know hungry like the wolf but never heard the rest. It's pretty catchy and well written. It could definitely be called new wave but it's much better than that. I feel like so often something is listed as new wave here to boost its chances, whereas in this case that label is gonna hold it back. The entire album got a bit samey but I'd happily listen to it again. 3/5.

While I appreciate the 80s sound, I've never really "got" Duran Duran. This has been a great excuse to listen to the album in its entirety and... I know it's good music but I'll definitely need to listen to it more regularly.

Loved it. I have been spoken derisively about synth heavy 80s albums in the past, but I'm growing to enjoy quite a bit of that style of music. Rio is well paced, and features interesting lyrics, amazing bass lines, and intriguing synth/keyboard work. I will definitely be returning to this album.

So very 80s. A fun album.

As far as I remember sexy boy / Simon Le Bon WAS Duran Duran. There were others in the band but somehow he was the only one that mattered. But that was 40 years ago and my mind has turned to mush since then. These days, I spend time trying to mentally separate Tom LaBonge, from Tom Delonge and Simon Le Bon from Cinnabon. Mmmmm.... Cinnabon — yummy, indulgent, sweet and warm. Cinnabon's brother, Simon is everything Cinnabon is but likely a complete and total dick. He seems like the kind of guy that'll park in a handicapped spot, try to screw your girlfriend and your sister at the same time and probably begins sentences with the phrase "Do you know who I am...?' But that voice of his... OMG. Is it possible to extricate that voice from the music and put it in my trousers? On tracks like Save a Prayer and Hold Back the Rain, Lonely in your Nightmare, Le Bon's voice gently blends into the music underneath in absolute perfection. Whomever produced this earned their money. The Wolf song is sexy fun and the others, except for the title track, are good too. All said, Rio is a great album, a composition of strong, sharp baselines, synth-y etherials, some disco drums and that oh so sexy-boy voice. YUM! Be forewarned before listening. Try to control yourself and bring some napkins. Similar to Cinnabon, Simon and his voice could easily leave you feeling weightless with a mess of sugary goo on your hands after you've finished. Four stars.

Those synths. Those bass lines. Simon Lebon. I wore this cassette out completely. Seeing Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf on MTV was transformative. And I was like 11! The 80s had arrived. Wanna give this a 4 so bad ...

Well, I'm not sure quite where to fall on this one. "Rio" is awful. I thought "Hungry Like a Wolf" was better for the first half, but by the end was quite sick of it. There are a few decent tracks though, mostly the ones that put more focus on the guitar and bass. (I'm beginning to think I'm really not a big fan of 80s music!)

oh how i love this album.

Duran Duran is one of my favorite 80s bands. Two undeniable hits (Rio, ...Wolf), a super strong near-hit (Save a Prayer - a personal fave) and the sleeper New Religion make this album a must-have for me. The rest of the album is unremarkable, but only one or two completely miss the mark. Put on your parachute pants and an off-the-shoulder sweatshirt with your favorite day-glo message and dance your butt off to this album!

The 80s were wild man, with a unique sound. This album is squarely 80s, but in a good way. The prominent bass driven rhythms throughout, like New Religion, are refreshing, and I enjoy them quite a bit. Rio comes alive at the chorus, which is catchy and much better than the rest of the song. I don’t completely understand why, but I have to point out that parts of the bass line in Lonely in Your Nightmare sound like an underwater recording of whales communicating. Hungry Like a Wolf is solid while Save a Prayer is ambling and soulless. I can see how this album put them on the map.

Duran Duran delivers an energetic and nostalgic sound with this pop rock album. You can easily dance to this music or simply play it in the background while working on something else.

Bit of a weird one cos on paper I should love it but there's something about Duran Duran that I just can't get on board with. Some undoubted classics on this album and it should be a 5star, but I can't tell if it's Le Bon or the seriousness with which they take themselves but I'll have to give it 3 in light of not being able to give it 3.5

I doesn’t say much for music from the age of modern man when a non eventful album full of lacklustre songs like this is judged one of the best of all time. I found it drab. 1 Star!

Listening to the first track of Rio, my heart sank. The musicianship is such that I can't simply dismiss it with a few insults. I'm going to have to listen to the whole damned thing. The rhythm section of John and Roger Taylor is precise and specific. Whether it's the busy and intricate baselines on the title cut or the slap bass on My Own Way, bassist John Taylor is undeniably competent and has a full, punchy sound. Roger Taylor's grooves are original and so solid they could be carved out of marble. Nick Rhoded' synth washes and arpeggiations aren't slapdash--they're calculated as hell. Guitarist Andy Taylor mostly played a supporting role here: he either plays soaring harmonic lines or plays rhythm. These tunes are arranged within an inch of their lives. As much of a piece as the album is, each individual song is its own distinct entity. Guest artist Andy Hamilton's sax lines may be improvised, but they sound sculpted. I can't even dismiss the songwriting, which is replete with hooks, even on non-hits like the title cut, not to mention the instant earworm of Hungry Like The Wolf, which was inescapable back in the early 80s. And yet, oh how I hate this record! Singer Simon Lebon has the protypical 80s pasty croon down pat. The synths are horrid, and yet they fit this chintzy material like a glove. The sax breaks are nauseatingly wimpy. The whole package strikes me as unbearably insipid. Maybe part of what makes me hates Rio so much is what this kind of music represents to me: mindless consumerism, materialism, fashion over substance, etc. And yet, on its own disgusting terms, Duran Duran's Rio is a roaring success. Excuse me while I vomit.

So fucking good man, Hungry Like the Wolf and Rio are my obvious favorites but the start of New Religion is fire. No skips and a perfect length, def gonna listen to this album a lot more now. Definitely 80s cheesy but like Prince, puts together enough awesome guitar licks (bass in Duran Durans case) and have tight enough song composition that they are the rare exception to the rule of "80's pop rock sucked"
