Wow old music is awesome!
Great recording, excellent playing, wonderful voice! Ain't nothing wrong with that!
Really liked this one. 4 stars.
Wonderful, laidback soul. Solomon Burke is new to me. He’s got an understated, soulful style on a lot of these tracks, but his charisma shines through. And he’s got power behind his voice too. Depending on the song, he can really belt. The rest of the band is great too. You can’t ask for anything more from this vintage soul style. Great performances all around.
Ooof this album is pulling at my heartstrings. I used to listen to vinyl records in the basement with my mom and brother back in the 90's after my father passed away, and this was one of them- or atleast it was this artist. I never knew who this was, and I had no idea going into this on a Tuesday in August at 9AM that I'd be getting some pretty heavy nostalgia hits. My mom would put on these records, mostly doo-wop, she would crank the volume, and we would all dance around in the basement. I'm sure it was very cathartic for her. This was a throwback! The songs are great, and his voice is incredible. Naturally I want to give it a 5 because it unknowingly has meant a lot to me, but I feel comfortable with it being a 4. It's a beautiful album.
The songs blend together as there isn’t much variation in style but what a great voice.
This was a pleasant album. The songs are all croony, silly, sort-of love songs but the sound is just excellent. I really enjoyed the listen and the performances. Very much a product of 1964, with pleasant but forgettable guitar riffs bookending common phrases. Performances were great. Loved some production decisions, including the warm distortion for particularly emotive moments of vocal performance. I really enjoyed goodbye baby and the closer. I don’t have a tons of context for this album. The songs were largely beautiful if not world-bending. I’m not sure this would have been received the same way when it was released. I think the style was more subversive at the time. But there are still choral callbacks to music that dominated two decades prior.
Красиво, хорошо, плавно
Wikipedia says he’s the fourth best soul singer, though they don’t mention Sam Cooke. Still – I’m surprised I’ve never heard of him. He has a fantastic range, and a good voice when he goes more bluesy. I can do without the Nat King Cole adjacent songs. But the other stuff is really good.
Great album! Mix of rock, soul, gospel and funk!
Atlantic's rawer sound is my kind of soul.
Absolutely brilliant voice. Some of the arrangements are a little too schmaltz for my taste but others are just classic soul
It’s light and airy, first track is a banger
4/5. Good blues sound, I like this album !
drei bis vier
This was a treat. Solomon has a great voice, very soulful and smooth. It was a lot of fun to listen to.
Rock & Soul – Solomon Burke (1964) | Soul / R&B | Avg: 8.75 | Favorite Song: “Cry to Me”* Rock & Soul by Solomon Burke is one of those records that feels like a masterclass in delivery. Nearly every track on here hits, and Burke’s voice carries it all—he’s equal parts preacher, crooner, and soul shouter. “Cry to Me” is the clear standout, and honestly, it’s one of the most emotionally resonant performances in ’60s soul. But even beyond that, the consistency across the record is striking. Most of these songs hover around the 8.5 to 10 range, which tells me this album never really loses its grip. There’s a timelessness to Burke’s phrasing and the way he leans into every line like it matters. Whether it’s an upbeat R&B shuffle or a slow-burning ballad, he finds the pocket and owns it. This isn’t flashy soul—it’s soul with weight, grit, and conviction. The record is short, but there’s no bloat, no filler. Just twelve tight, impassioned cuts. It’s easy to see how this laid the groundwork for later soul giants, but even on its own, Rock & Soul holds up beautifully.
Best Song: Cry to Me Feels like it could be the Bull Durham soundtrack. I liked it! This dude's voice must have gotten him all the women or men, whatever he liked.
3.5
3.5
Great collection of songs, strangely cohesive despite being recorded over three years. (At least in early 60s terms.) I absolutely love his style does remind me a bit of early James Brown before he was the Godfather of Funk. But Brurke really does have his own stamp as well... Solid 60s soul album 9.1 ★★★★½
This is my preferred flavor of soul music -- the early 60s southern soul that inspired a lot of the British rock bands of the 60s. It's a great album with seven of the albums 12 tracks becoming hit singles. "Cry to Me", "If You Need Me", and "You're Good For Me" are the clear standouts here, but the whole album is quite strong. 4.5 stars.
you listen after a break up or at a slow dance at a wedding
Thought this album was gorgeous. I love his voice. I think the songs were sometimes a bit repetitive but I didn’t mind too much because I liked his voice so much. Fav song: Cry to Me Least fav: Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance)
Very nice chill vibes! relaxing and calm; good for cleaning
This was really soulful and really positive. Mo-town vibe, great vocal performance. Unfortunately, my son came up to me and spent most of the album listening to Roald Dahl's 'The Enormous Crocodile's on my knee (an excellent performance from me!). It provided suitable accompanying music to the excellent voices I used to Humpy Rumpy and Mugglewump the monkey. 4 Stars.
Really enjoyed his voice Best Song: If You Need Me Rating: 7.0/10 (Good) Stars: 4/5
It is really hard to judge these early rock and roll albums because we are so much more familiar with all that follows. But this is a gem. It might be even better because I didn't know all of the songs, but regardless "Rock 'N Soul" is an apt title as Mr. Burke delivers gutsy vocals. And the production value (though naturally spare) comes through marvelously. This was a real treat!
I quite enjoyed this
kind of dope? dude has a great commanding voice
Even though not directly related to this album when I played it was whilst in the beautiful countryside of Australia after playing in the snow with my girlfriend for the first time which felt like a movie and this album just added to the experience. It touched a perfect moment with some sweet and groovy 60s rock and roll with beautiful lyrics. Couldn’t have it any better.
Another exposure album. This one is good and it turns out historically important. What a legacy!
Not too bad for an older album
Good soul for your soul
This album gives soulful vibes of a soldier in a far off land, sitting in a dimly lit dive bar at 1am drowning himself in rye while thinking of ladies back home. Thoughts of his current girl and memories of former flames circle in his thoughts, while in the back of his mind he knows he’ll be on the front lines mere hours from now.
Love and soul is in the air! That timbre in his voice!
Never heard the name, but was familiar with some songs. Back when albums were a compilation of songs rather than a theme/concept album. Some good ones on it though.
Really enjoyable album for the most part. There’s a few tracks that need a couple of listens. He has an amazing voice though. Top Track - Cry To Me
Man, I love the blues, and I'm so glad this album list has had so many bluesy artists.
Beautiful
This one was pretty to listen to. I knew the first track bc or virality but the others were so good. Listened while I was doing my final summer school assignment and it was a great time.
Good vibes Solomon
Strong album this
This is that just absolute pure, beautiful music that I'm after, joyous.
This was soulful and really good for an oldies album. Listened right after the Mariah Carey one and was pleased with the more variety showcased here than on the previous
Never heard of him, but it's great! Like a melding of Sam Cooke and Smokey Robinson. Spotify played one song over and it was Everybody Needs Somebody, covered famously by The Blues Brothers.
I mean what can I say, a good ass time
Nicht meine Art von Musik, aber nett zu hören.
Solomon Burke is legit fantastic. Pretty much classic oldies of the Back to the Future era. Solid songs and just a joy to listen to
I enjoyed the songs you're good for me and you can't move them all - which has a really fun Spanish guitar and brass. Very soulful
Relaxing listen
Never listened to Solomon Burke but really liked this album. His voice is like a different flavour of sam cooke.
His voice is amazing. I love rock n soul music. Enjoyed listening to this in the morning.
This is one of those albums that is just easy to throw on and enjoy. A lot of the great soul artists are like that, I'm finding. I don't know why I've never heard of Solomon Burke before this, but that's a problem. Surely he was influential as all hell, making an album like this so early on. Great voice and great tunes. Soulful and packed with feeling. Must-listen #154.
Very groovy but had some trouble staying engaged with the lyrics
My son was not a big fan, not his type of music. He still gives it four stars because he recognizes the talent. I loved it and I am going to check out more. My wife agrees. Great album.
Vou dar 4 estrelas pra esse álbum mas sinceramente ele merece 5 por ter me mostrado solomon. Escutei rock 'n soul na manhã e até agora estou escutando sua discografia, simplesmente uma joia encontrada.
what a voice, super smooth and a very pleasant listen!!
Love that voice. This was really nice.
Smoooooth rock.
I feel like you can throw a rock at any Burke album and find one just as good as the other. That’s not an insult. He wasn’t a singular genius or anything, but he was awfully damn good. I think of Solomon as a mostly unheard giant of 60s soul music, who kept getting career revivals over the following decades (eventually catching my ear in the early 00s). He’s neither Otis nor Sam, didn’t have a string of Motown classics, wasn’t part of the Stax stable, never had a signature hit. But when you throw a Sol record on, I mean, you’re not reaching for those other guys. And he was omnivorous - there’s a Woodie Guthrie cover here, CCR later in the decade, Maggie’s Farm even! Can’t Love ‘Em All? Bullshit.
Classic
Album recorded for the single. One good song, the rest, meh.
Great classic album
A very solid 4. Very much what it says on the title, though it leans more in the Soul direction. Just Out of Reach, Can't Nobody and Beautiful Brown Eyes were standouts for me. All of these songs sound perfect for a "the protagonist is about to die and has one dance with lover" scene's backing track. That or someone's about to commit mass murder. I enjoyed this, but again it does unfortunately suffer from being one drop in the ocean of 6/8 soul records which this era provided.
I love soul. But this just didn't gel with me as much as I was expecting. Maybe it's due to the fact this is my third album in a row of a similar genre, so I could just be fatigued. Don't get me wrong, Solomon's voice is incredible, but I genuinely couldn't distinguish it from any other soul or blues singer. It feels generic, which in a way, shows how powerful these soul singers are. Anyways, it was an enjoyable listen, but I can't see myself coming back. Sheer talent does give this credibility worthy of a 4.
Perhaps listening to this in a vacuum after two soul albums that I gave a 5 had left me feeling a bit harsh here, but I just thought this was consistently a good album, nothing that really blew me away but a quick and easy listen that I wouldn't mind listening to again in the future
On first listen, this hit pretty hard but after multiple listens it is easy to see why soul artists like James Brown had more of a profile in the mainstream of music. This was a pleasant surprise and this feels like it was tailor-made to be on the Goodfellas soundtrack. Solomon Bourke's ability to change from silky smooth to just the right amount of rough with his voice is best demonstrated on Can't Nobody Love You, which is a song that commands you to sit there and really listen. It's not just Burke's voice and lyricism that makes this album great, but a tasteful blend of rock n roll influence in here really sets this apart from other soul albums. Granted, some parts of this album can just pass me by on re-listens but overall, this is a very fun experience. After reading about Solomon Bourke, especially his Olympic performance as a natalist, it seems that if he put in as much effort towards his performances as he did to the continuation of the human race he could have been as big a name as the Hardest-Working Man in Show Business, but I suppose the Hardest-Working Man in the Perinatal Ward is just as big a title. Highlights: Can't Nobody Love You, Won't You Give Him (One More Chance), You Can't Love Them All
Fantastic soul record, and damn near perfect. Every song is a winner, just pretty samey throughout. Not much more to say.
A pure gem from an artist too much forgotten. A wonderful voice in the manner of Otis Redding or Percy Sledge.
I am a big fan of this album. I love SB’s voice and this selection really shows it off. There are a lot of church phrasings and lyrics in there, which I enjoyed. The album could possibly have been a bit more polished in the production, but I love those rough edges that are on there. So that under produced vibe really works for me and especially with his voice. Weird to think this isn’t a greatest hits, because there isn’t a consistent sound on the album, and because it’s got the big hit Cry To Me on there. Love it.
Pretty good
"I fed you candy, you fed me dirt" is a freakin bar. Soul music is just better than all other music.
Never heard this yet feel like it’s been with me my whole life. Damn I’m a sucker for ‘60s soul. It’s just such a classic sound that I never get tired of. Wonderful singer too.
Lovely
4/5 liked the early soul sound
New to me and I like the album

Great
I love his voice and the songs are catchy
Classic post doowap should album. Very much enjoyed it.
Never heard of this guy but would listen again
this is really good. It sounds so familiar, and I feel like It's Hank Williams? I assume hank stole this sound, but I'm not trying to be woke... don't know, but I really like his voice and the style. great album.
Really fun to listen to! 4/5
This guy got tons of ass. Metric tons. So much power and conviction, up there with Percy and Wilson.
Not someone I was familiar with but was impressed with the tunes and singing
Wow! How did I miss Solomon Burke this whole time. Perfectly balanced, soulful voice. Great instrumentation, well written songs, amazing backup singers. Excellent production on this album. One of my new favorites. I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never heard of him before.
Good stuff. Melodic, nice harmonies, and Burke has a rich voice. The production was complex but not overdone, and I could hear the guitar clearly in some songs. I listened to it twice.
Classic sounds. Very well done. Very strong album.
What an amazing singer! Love how he goes from smooth & silky to rough & ready. Prefer the rougher sound but overall a great record. Favorites: Cry to Me, If You Need Me Would I listen to it again: Yes
Smooth, really nice. 3-4 rounded up
Really good for Sam Cooke impersonator
Great voice, great listen, just a fantastic smooth sound. I love the R&B/Soul music of the 50's through the early 80's. This is the kind of music you just play all day long and it never seems to get old. This has redneck pool day written all over it. My first experience, that I can recall with Solomon and he reminds me a bit of Sam Cooke with the occasional yell of Little Richard. Really enjoyed my listens and reminded me it's been awhile since I have binged out on some good classis R&B.. Thank you Solomon. Very good, relaxing album. 4
hell yeah, smooth as butter. 4.5 stars
Cry to Me is a masterpiece
I'm not a big fan of the 50's sound music, but this album is from 1964 so everything it's cool. A great listening experience, with a rich musical performance and songs that are going to touch your heart if you give them the oportunity. Solomon Burke it's one of the fathers of R&B, so if you enjoy that kind of music this album it's perfect for you.
Reminds me of Martin and he introduced me to Cry to Me, raspy voice that works well with the album vibe. 3.5
Burke leans more into the soul here, but that’s just fine by me. Sultry vocal delivery on top of top tier 60s Motown production is plenty to keep me invested.
The King of Rock 'n' Soul lives up to his royal title here, delivering passionate performances steeped in soul, gospel, and R&B with a commanding presence and heartfelt conviction.
I can't deny there's greatness in here. I'd be happy to hear any of these songs pop up in a music mix. But I don't know if I needed to listen through an entire album; as a whole, it didn't particularly transport me.
Awesome
Liked this a lot. Not too frantic, not all blues, good voice, good backup singers.
Rock n soul is right!
Very nice listen, especially for the time period. Quite clear how this would have inspired quite a lot of different artists.
I'm souled on it.
First track is a banger
Despite listening to a lot of soul over the years, I am not hugely familiar with Solomon Burke, other than a couple of singles, and this album possibly explains why. The record is actually a collection of singles rather than a true album, and they range from the sublime "Cry To Me", an excellent version of "He'll Have to Go", to the merely good. And they are all good but nothing really memorable songwise. Solomon's voice is excellent, somewhere between Ray Charles and James Brown but some of the arrangements are a little tired. Enjoyable but not going to rival Otis Redding, or Wilson Pickett, or Aretha in my collection.
Great album, brilliant voice and great tracks to go with it. Winced every time he says "little girl" though which is quite a bloody lot
solid mid 60s soul album. solomon burke has a great voice and it is definitely showcased here. the highlights to me were "cry to me" "if you need me" and "goodbye baby" - all great soul songs. the lowlight for me was "just out of reach" which was a bizarre early 60s style pop song that does not fit the rest of the album. anyways, it's fun, it's pretty quick. it's nothing mindblowing, but it's good!
Wonderful voice. I like the range and variety. Solid!
Zeer solid, allemaal hitjes, zeer soul, pretty rock. Weinig op aan te merken 8.8/10
Incredible album! This is the type of music that you can listen to a million times and still love it. 8.7/10
Big fan of his 2002 album Don’t give up on me, but not really visited his original period. Fantastic voice. 4 Star
Somehow have never heard of this guy, but I certainly knew the first song as most of us of a certain age and proclivity do from Dirty Dancing. What a powerful voice, loved it.
This was super lovely <3
I liked all of them
This album is such an enjoyable listen. And I'm ashamed to admit, I somehow had never heard of Solomon Burke before this. His voice is rich, he has great range, and the melodies and little guitar riffs were quite catchy. This is very close to being a five-star album for me; there really isn't a bad song in the album. The only reason I'm not giving it the masterpiece treatment is because the sound is a bit homogenous, and it kind of wore on me by the end despite the runtime being on the shorter end. I'll definitely be listening to this one again very soon. 4.5 stars.
Magical voice, wonderful album
There are two artists from the early blues and soul era I wish I knew about when I got started enjoying the genre almost 2 decades ago. Sister Rosetta Thorpe and Solomon Burke. Burke on this album is rock and rockabilly rythmns combined with pure gospel and soul up front. His powerful voice has natural distortion that cuts through, and may have been difficult to record but it is so iconic. Monotonous and repetitive sure, but that is what was in style at the time. This album can heal a broken heart, or allow it to wallow in pitty for quite along time. Big fan.
Cry to Me
> the Beatles
This is a great album that's so much fun to listen to. It's so soulful. Liked Songs Added: Cry To Me Hard, Ain't It Hard
Liked it
3.75
I really enjoyed this one. Great stuff.
Very enjoyable. Great voice.
Really enjoyed
Smooth and soulful. What more do you want.
Really cool to see the predecessor to so many iconic melodies in later decades. I liked the jazzy vibes mixed with country elements. Would listen again
Wonderful soul album, really enjoy "Just out of reach", feels like a nice movie song. I also like "Can't nobody love you" (seems like I am a fan of the backing chorus in contrast with his voice). "Can't love em" all reminds me of the Beatles' "All my loving". Album does a great job of evoking emotions, has fun rhyming lyrics, and the singer has a rich and expressive voice. 4/5
Good, strong, sexy music. Every song looks like a foreplay song. And every single one is too-too-too strong! This is how soul should look like, not like that whiny Marvin Gaye who gave me hemorrhoids yesterday. I will definitely listen to this again!
He's got a great voice; I don't know why he wasn't a bigger star.
kan er geen kwaad woord over zeggen... niet mijn stijl, maar groovde en swingde als geen ander
Enjoyed this
Kinda surprised how much I liked this one. There were some really good songs on this, I'll have to listen to it again sometime.
4/5
Some great production on the songs makes them sound rich while his voice still has a nice raw blues edge.
Great album, really enjoyable listen.
would listen to again
Enjoyed it
Very good
way more about soul then rock, in fact this is more mellow then it is anything which i didnt quite expect. this tbh maybe lacks standout features in general (aside from the fact that burke's personal life as a mortician and a reverend and a father of 21 children is pretty wild), but its hard to go wrong with this type of music in general. some v beautiful tracks, a predictably great vocal performance (im mostly unsure about the backing singers tbh! they kind of clutter it up), and just a convincingly smoldering, carnal lover vibe In General which makes me wonder what this guy's sermons were like.
If You Need Me // Can’t Nobody Love You // Someone To Love Me // Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance) //
I’ve always really enjoyed that soul sound, the playing, the singing, great!
Never really checked out Solomon Burke before and now regret not having done it sooner.
I don't think I've heard much (or perhaps any) of Solomon Burke before, so it's very nice to get what's effectively a best-of album of his hits (and best to simply ignore whether this album violates the project's rule on greatest-hits/compilation albums). Despite a few oddball tracks ("Just out of reach" in particular), this is a great collection of soul/R&B/rock songs sung by a clearly talented artist.
Didn’t know Idles covered his song. Really good easy listening. Would recommend.
OVERALL: Very good, but a lot of the songs just aren't memorable. Every song here is incredible in some way, and Solomon Burke's voice is absolutely stunning. The biggest problem with this is the microphone peaking, which is kinda distracting and definitely takes away from it. It also doesn't really work as an album, more as a collection of singles, but that's fine. The lyrics are definitely basic, but his voice more than makes up for it. Also fade out outros are extremely common, but that's more of a personal vendetta. Just Out Of Reach, Beautiful Brown Eyes, Cry To Me, Someone To Love Me, and You're Good For Me are absolutely incredible songs and bring this up to a 4, their instrumental and vocals are just way too good to give the album anything lower. SONG AVG: 8.625/10 PERSONAL RATING: 8/10 Goodbye Baby: He has a great voice. The instrumental is very simple but also very nice, and works very well with his voice. Pretty good backing vocals. It does use a fade out outro though. 7.75/10 Cry To Me: Fantastic instrumental, and the vocals are, once again, incredible. It does sound like something that would play in a retirement home, but that is kinda given with music from this time. Sounds really good, but it still uses a fade out outro. 9.25/10 Won't You Give Him (One More Chance): I have a feeling that every song here will end in a fade out outro. Anyways, the backing vocals have more of a focus on this, and they are pretty good. Obviously, his voice is fantastic, and the instrumental is pretty nice but a little basic. Also the lyrics are very basic so far, but I guess I was kinda expecting it. 8/10 If You Need Me: I have nothing different to say about this one, great voice, instrumental, and backing vocals. Uses a fade out outro. 7.75/10 Hard, Ain't It Hard: See above. The instrumental and backing vocals are really good here. 8/10 Can't Nobody Love You: Same rating as If You Need Me, but everything is better. His vocals are really good here, and the instrumental is more interesting. 8.5/10 Just Out Of Reach: I listened to this right after watching the Kendrick halftime show, so uhhhhhhh. The instrumental is incredible, and works very well with his voice. Speaking of which, this song probably has the best vocals so far. For some reason it reminds me of a Christmas song. Also, it doesn't use a fade out outro. 10/10 You're Good For Me: See above, but it uses a fade out outro. His vocal performance is maybe a bit worse, but the instrumental more than makes up for it. 9.25/10 You Can't Love Them All: Pretty solid, but the microphone peaking is especially noticeable here. The backing vocals are sometimes corny, but they're usually fine. 7/10 Someone To Love Me: Just really good overall, and the guitar is weird but works well. Probably the best lyrics so far. 9.25/10 Beautiful Brown Eyes: Very beautiful, the instrumental is basically just Just Out Of Reach 2. His vocals here are my favorite on the album, and the only complaint is the fade out outro. There isn't really anything I don't like about this except for the fade out outro. 9.9/10 He'll Have To Go: Possibly the best instrumental on this album, beautiful strings that work very well. Works fairly well as the outro. 8.85/10
FAVO: Cry to me, If you need me, Can't nobody love you, Someone to love me, You're good for me,
Mmmmm, old soul music.
Not the most groundbreaking, but I don’t think that’s what he was going for and if you just sit back and enjoy the music, you’ll see that it’s really just a good time. I love this, it’s great. 4/5
very pleasant soul
Wonderful voice. Comfortable to listen to
Fully recommend this one. A product of its time but very listenable today. A great voice and songs that you'll know. You might not be able to put a name to the voice, but you'll be aware of them for sure.
I love the sound of the drums here. Great discovery. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
It's so beautiful.
This was a cool album, especially to hear something from the early days of soul music. It’s a great blend of gospel-driven soul mixed with R&B and some early rock influences. You can also hear those bluesy elements woven into the rock side of things, which adds even more depth to the overall sound.
Outstanding. A lot I knew there and some great others with real influence from Jazz and influence on future music.
The overall theme of the album is incredible, but unfortunately suffers from the songs all repeating the same pattern and they kind of start blending together at the halfway point. But honestly really pleasant album to listen to.
One of those names I know I've heard but couldn't have named a song he did. Good stuff.
I designate this as a great cooking album. It's not going to be in my regular rotation but the vibes are crisp. I think it needs another few listens.
Cool.
marvelous
Soul music at its finest. A couple of the songs were weak but Solomon's voice made them stronger.
perfect slice of early 60s soul. had heard of solomon burke and had heard cry to me but didnt know too much about him or his work before this, so am v grateful this came up as todays album
Lot of soul recently and this was another cracker. Incredible voice and backing. Would’ve been a 5 but bit too repetitive
Enjoyable.
Pretty solid
3.5★. This stuff is good for the soul.
Impressive that he was able to make 12 songs that all were about the same thing but sounded slightly different from each other. This guy can’t catch a break, he is in love with girl he sees, be it they are dead, cheating, or just not interested. I actually thought this was older after listening and was slightly surprised that it was from the 60s. Its not the most groundbreaking album or interesting but its enjoyable. 7/10
Hit after hit with excellent songwriting and backing singers
Крута клас не нраица для поездок круто прям
This was a bloody great listen. Would listen again, great soul music. How it's never been on my radar before I'll never know.
Solid early rhythm & blues album. He has a great voice.
Awesome. Crazy to think I hadn’t heard of him!

I loved the first song and everything upbeat. Surprisingly, the slower songs were my least favorite.
I can confidently say I've never heard this album....and maybe even never heard of Solomon Burke Not really finding a bad track here...I especially enjoy the ones with the female backing vocals. Surprise Surprise: Jerry Wexler produced this album I like this a lot. The 60's soul/r&b sound is totally in my wheelhouse, but I think I'm going to call this a 4.5 star album. I would definitely spin this again outside of this project, but nothing is telling me "I HAVE to hear it again."
I liked this! Easy listening, relaxing vibe.
Started off great hehe "Cry To Me" put me straight into Dirty Dancing and Grease vibes. I'm pretty sure its actually in Dirty Dancing... IT IS!!! A beautiful 60s Soul Album. I really enjoyed it - was very lovely. Soloman Burke has such a graceful voice perfect for Soul music.
Great music! I wouldn't pick it to listen to, or recommend it - but was a really nice surprise. Really enjoyed it. Great voice - nice good old soul music.
What a great voice! Loved listening to this but not enough stand out bangers.
He’s got the Voice of an angel, only gripe is the songs can blend together
smooth
Lovely, a wonderful surprise (I didn't knew this), I greatly enjoyed it, it helped me a lot through the working day ;-)
I could listen to this quite a bit. Nice easy fun listening.
I like this a lot!
I enjoyed this early soul record.
Great
Some good ol' fashioned soul. Gonna have to check out more of Solomon Burke
First several songs sound like Early Elvis or blues with Jamaican influence. Fun listening to, very pleasant. Nothing original.

Basically a Greatest Hits albums, which I thought weren't allowed on this list. Why is this one ok but something like the Eagles Greatest Hits isn't... In any case...let's continue... It's an older style of music that really doesn't fit with any playlist that I would ever play. It is good, and to listen to an album like this every once in a while is cool. Best Tracks (5/5): Cry to Me Others (4/5): Can't Nobody Love You, You Can't Love Them All, He'll Have to Go, Goodbye Baby Rating: 3.5
Hadn't heard this before but really enjoyed it. Until I did a little research, I didn't realize how popular he was in the 60s. He continued performing until his death in 2002, so I'm surprised I hadn't come across him sooner. This is some of the best traditional soul, R&B, and blues I've heard. Glad he made the list. Fun fact: at the time of his death at age 70 , he had 90 grandchildren. Woah.
Fun album, just feels good to listen to. Has a lot of stiff competition, but it is definitely going into the rotation.
Old classic soul music. It’s a simple album but one that is fun and fun to listen to throughout.
Solomon Burke has such a majestic voice and the better songs on here are soulful and great to dance to
Being exposed to albums like this is complete validation of a project like this. Great stuff.
Really good. I remember seeing him in hootenanny Jools Holland one year.
Очень приятный, нежный, однообразный, фоновый, неторопливый альбом. Понравилось, переслушаю
This album is a *vibe*. There's a couple of songs that are out of place or just a miss, but otherwise I'm bobbing and swaying to every song on the album. There's a few that stand out from the rest, but it's not a "hits and shits" situation at all. The occasional low notes that Solomon sings just hit me in the depths of my soul. The background singers are sometimes a miss for me, especially when they have a more choral sound. Honestly, it's a really complete album. I wish there was a little more form to the whole thing; it just feels like a smashing together of songs, rather than an album. That said, it's a great, great listen from beginning to end. Favorite Song(s): Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye), If You Need Me
Such an enjoyable proto-soul album comprised of a bunch of singles that were never meant to be an album but work seamlessly nonetheless. A soul singer that probably does not receive the amount of attention in the wider circles of music outside the Soul genre that he very much deserves. He deserves to be in the conversation of greatest soul singers with the likes of James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Sam Cooke.
Ich liebe Soul
Ashamed I didn’t know this man by name. Soulful and sexy R&B with impeccable backup singers. A couple of the songs are cheesy or this would have been a 5. Really enjoyed the majority of the album.

Wow, great voice and a love a choir orchestration. Just wow. Downloaded album ASAP. Turned out I already had a LOT of Solomon Burke. Who knew!
This album contains both rock and soul equally and that's just nifty
I liked the rock a bit more than the soul. Overall pretty decent album with a few catchy songs. Favorite songs were: 7. You’re Good For Me 9. Hard, Ain’t it Hard 7/10
I won't listen to this again but Angelina is having a hard day and we listened to some of the songs and danced around the house which was nice so that's giving it an extra star.
This album was dope. I liked every track! There were a lot of fantastic vocal performances. It had a great runtime and I didn't get bored. 8/10
Pretty good
WOO this is good. Solomon's vocal chords must've been fried during the recording of this. Powerful voice and lyrics backed with some great simple instrumentals. its soul to your bones baby. it gets a little same-y here and there, but its still very enjoyable.
A solid soul album. Doesn’t do anything to break the mold but if you like soul music you’ll like this one!
Great, old-fashioned music, exactly as described on the tin.
BURKE!!!! 4
The voice is so emotional and moving, the songs have that sweet soul sound... It's a shame this guy didn't get more attention because he deserved it.
3.6 very solid. No weak songs but maybe a tad repetitive. Hellava voice
iconic
Great vocalist. Tight band. Mellow 50’s style dinner show type stuff. Not my genre but well done.
Thoughts before listening: I'm expecting some old school, early soul music. I'm sure this will be great. Review: Solomon Burke may not have become a household name like many of his contemporaries i.e. Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, etc, but that doesn't mean he wasn't putting out quality material of his own. This album is full of bluesy, soul music sung with a voice that can be sweet in one moment and then immediately turn into a growl. The fact that this album isn't full of well known classic songs actually enhances the experience from a discovery standpoint. Sometimes the older albums on this list are a little boring to listen to because I already know the hits. This is all new to me and has been a great listen. 4-stars
This man had 21 children. Anyway, good voice but it’s all a bit generic somehow. Still getting a 4 though. Classy stuff
Nice listen. I like getting these older records where you can just imagine the impact it's had. And the songs all sound great. Blur together without any standouts, but I enjoyed it all the same. 4
Stark avslutning
I've got a compilation CD of his greatest hits, and there's a few from this album on there. There's a rawness about his voice that makes an average song into a good one, and a good song into a great one. I really enjoyed this album. It probably sounds really dated and old to the younger crowd, but to me there's very much "a less is more" element to good music.
Pleasant surprise
Amazing voice, a really good album
Definitely inspiration for Fogerty. Great groove 3/5
Great voice.
The King of Rock n Soul. Deserves a listen every now and then.
Preacher soul jams.
Loved this, will revisit….
Really enjoyable album, with shades of Sam Cook.
Really good! Smooth vocals, lots of emotion, supreme easy listening. Several songs made it into my playlists. If You Need Me was my favourite song. You Can't Love 'Em All made me laugh (I can't love them all, I'm just one guy! Oh how tragic)
Beautiful voice from one of the founding fathers of Soul. Cry to Me the highlight 7.5/10
This man, who didn't want to be portrayed as a rhythm and blues man due to its' association with profanity, has stolen my heart. An easy listener with all of the charm of a simpler time, without the profanity
Never really heard on Solomon Burke before this but really enjoyed it. I could see entering this one into my rotation
Incredible voice and incredible presence. I probably won't listen to this album again just because it feels a little old fashioned and dated now, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a great album.
💕Cry to Me
great voice and some great bit of songs
7/10. Enjoyed it. Great voice.
This was a good album. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
First off, I must say Solomon's voice carries so damn hard. That shit is immaculate. It's rare that I find a bad soul album from this particular decade and this is without exception. Great album! Top 3 Fav: Cry to Me, Won't You Give Him (One More Chance), and Hard, Ain't it Hard Top 3 Worst: no bad songs 3.50-3.75/5
Now this is the 60s music I like
From the first song this album hooked me. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. Before today I never heard of Solomon Burke. Id listen to quite a few songs off this album by themselves.
Great voice and some memorable songs. Cry To Me is a standout for sure.
This was such a great album. It was just a perfect picture back in time. It was rock, and soul, and oldies. I loved this.
A great soulful voice, a few songs that make you want to move about, but not the sort of thing I'd play on repeat
This was a cool album, especially to hear something from the early days of soul music. It’s a great blend of gospel-driven soul mixed with R&B and some early rock influences. You can also hear those bluesy elements woven into the rock side of things, which adds even more depth to the overall sound.
Yeah! That's my kind of music! I really liked his voice. I'll leave 4 stars.
cry to me- oh i’m doing cabbage patch i’m bout to twist and shout just out of reach-backing vocals are awesome goodbye baby- cute i like it !! if you need me/can’t nobody love you- these two sound similar (probably not actually) but i like them both! someone to love me- i loooooove the vocal on this song and i love the swingy jazziness you’re good for me- backing vocals! those women are killin it won’t you give him- just one more chance! hard, ain’t it hard- i think my favorite so far you can’t love em all- trumpets !! backing vocals !!! beautiful brown eyes- i don’t have brown eyes therefore i cannot relate (im jk this song is cute) he’ll have to go- i like it overall: 8/10 i love the swingy vibes of this album and the backing vocals and production is great. i also love that all the songs are pretty short and i think it’s funny that they all fade out. it gives a kinda this would just keep going if we didn’t fade it out (i wish he would stop saying little girl but i know this is 1963)
Good old soul music. Every now and then some other influence would present itself, like the horns in You Can’t Love ‘Em All, which made but a little more interesting. Good stuff, solid album.
176/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Great album, real easy listening
Very good! 3.5/5
The lyricism on this album comes across really desperate to me. I know it's meant to be sweet but it gives off borderline stalker vibes. Anyways, in terms of the actual music, it's not bad. The singing well harmonized. I liked the band too. Overall, good not great.
Decent little album, quite catchy, feels a but latin for some reason.
Interesting record released post JFK, pre-Beatlemania. What that has to do with this I have no idea. Wasn’t familiar at all except the name slightly ringing a bell…Singer’s name or a comic book villain’s name? I don’t know, but I like this album.
mid-century soul is awesome
I was familiar with Solomon Burke's name before but hadn't delved into this album until recently. To modern ears, the production might come across as a bit cutesy, and the mix between soul and rock could seem tame. However, considering its historical context, Rock 'N' Soul has a lot to offer. Burke’s commanding vocals shine throughout, with particular highlights being "Cry To Me" and "If You Need Me." These tracks exemplify Burke's ability to convey deep emotion and showcase the album's enduring appeal.
Never heard of this guy and so pleasantly surprised.
Soulful smooth and beautiful.
Very tasty soul
Clearly I missed all the Soul units at the School of Rock. My bad, abviously. Quite the show. Apparently this is the guy is largely responsible for the Soul sound... and made 40 or 50 albums. Well, this is my "first date" with Solomon. I have no whimsical stories or oral histories to share. A comely voice - an album of hits, and prodiguous output. It will go on the 'listen again' pile. & right now its sounding good as a Friday afternoon beers and sunset music. The energy of a live show is right there alright. A solid 4 for now, but not the full gush just yet.
I had never heard this album before. In fact, in the 60’s, I doubt very much that I ever heard Burke on the radio. He never charted a single on the 2UE Top 40. Eventually I became familiar with Cry To Me - a classic indeed. It & Just Out Of Reach (Of MyTwo Empty Arms) were included on an Atlantic Records compilation, History Of Rhythm & Blues : The Beat Goes On 1961-62, which I picked up at Ashwoods. Ironic that Atlantic included Burke on this album, considering that ,according to Wiki at least, he hated being referred to as an r&b singer, for religious reasons. When I checked Volume 5 : 1962-1966 of the definitive Atlantic Rhythm & Blues history, one of 8 double albums released by Atlantic in 1985, neither of those tracks made the cut & the only track by Burke included there is If You Need Me, written by Wilson Pickett. No matter. The man had a unique voice, which you always recognise immediately as his voice. And when I finally did own a Solomon Burke album, his 2002 comeback album, Don’t Give Up On Me, that voice was still strong. Van Morrison, Yom Waits, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe & Bob Dylan were among the songwriters who provided Burke with new songs for that album, which finally won him a Grammy. But Rock ‘N Soul is the real deal. Cry To Me & You Can’t Love ‘Em All both have that New York sound created by Leiber & Stoller & Phil Spector all over them (think Spanish Harlem). But his flirtation with country & western, exquisite on his version of He’ll Have To Go, while it may have been influenced by Ray Charles’s c&w crossover albums, sounds quite unique to me. A terrific record, which I’m thrilled to have finally heard.
3.5
Good blues, but not surprising
this is a beautiful record, showcasing the incredible vocals of solomon burke, a pioneering artist in the creation of the r&b/soul sound. i thought each track complimented each other nicely, allowing the album to flow smoothly, and giving an ambience to a room. being a bit of a philistine when it comes to this genre, i had not heard of solomon burke prior to listening to this album, but i am glad to have been enlightened to his art, and will definitely delve further into his back catalogue. for me, this album defines perfectly my reasons for participating in the 1001 albums generator, as it opens my eyes to so many artists i had yet to discover.
Solid older R&B album. I quite enjoyed this one. Really great voice.
4.0
great soul and rock album enjoy the guitar crazy to think there were 7 top 100 hits out of 12 songs
Sick. Cool performances.
Great voice and good music. Just dropped off a bit through the album.
I knew "Cry to Me," but I didn't know the name Solomon Burke. This is good comfort soul music in the vein of Sam Cooke. He even mentions Sam and Ray Charles in one of the Songs. I think it was "Can't Nobody Love You." I will listen to this again one day.
Pure rock and soul, baby. Putting tons of emotion into the music, you can feel it throughout.
Super album i bedste 60 stil til rock n roll
Enjoyable if not a bit repetitive. Fantastic vocals from Solomon and a good introduction to early soul music. The content also gets a bit repetitive, but it's still a good album.
While it may not have aged super gracefully, this record still seems to have a lot going for it. The voice is obviously incredible, and so are the instrumentals and harmonies. This is everything I want from an R&B record and it does it very well. Not to mention Solomon Burkes amazing influence on the world of soul. It’s insane how he isn’t talked about as much as the other greats.
This guy knows what's up in terms of soul. Great voice.
Beautiful music
The album title says it all. Just wonderful 60s rock and soul. One of my favorites so far.
My thought for how to sum up this album is "good for what ails you". I'm not sure how well I can articulate my feeling about that further but hopefully that makes sense to more people than just me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think there is just something about the bluesy/rock style and his voice that just soothes my soul. He really seems to know how to use his voice very well, changing the sound up to suit each part of each song. THAT all said there are definitely enough songs on here that are "skippable" to me that it ends up being more of a 4 start than a 5 star for me. What is good is really incredible though. This will definitely be an album I reach for in the right mood.
Pretty solid album, and one I wasn't familiar with before. It's certainly of it's time, but the quality of his voice brings this significantly above expectations. Would listen again.
Very nice record - so warm sounding. I think it'd require many listens to really 'bed in', but I'm hitting it with a solid 4/5, because how could you not? Real golden era stuff. No particular favourite tracks.
Good stuff, old soul music with a bit of blues and gospel thrown in for good measure
New discovery for me! What a voice. I’m not sure of the timing, did he influence Elvis it was it the other way around? Or they just have similar influences. This album was too short, left me wanting more. Turns out he recorded for decades, so I know who I’ll be listening to today!
Fits this 60's era softer rock feel with a bit of jive thrown in.
Good collection of songs about love. Solomon Burke and his vocalists have great voices, and the music is a fun time. Very solid. Standouts: If You Need Me, Can’t Nobody Love You, Someone to Love Me, Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance), and You Can’t Love ‘Em All.
What a voice.
Excellent, will Re listen
Good Album
Lots of classics done in a unique style I've not experienced. Beautiful voice.
What a great mix of rock and soul! Each song feels genuine, with a solid backing band that adds to the experience. It's an enjoyable listen for anyone who likes both genres, combining the energy and emotion in a way that's hard to beat.
Classic Blues. Old blues like this aren’t really my time, but it was a smooth listen.
