Visste ikkje at D-Bo sin Wild is the wind va ein cover
Top 3 Songs: - 1. That's All I Ask (5) - 2. What More Can I Say? (3) - 3. I Love Your Lovin' Ways (1)
A real classic. I knew "four women" but didn't know where from. Really digging the vibes. But also - a whole album of this is maybe too much of the same?
Nearly a 4
Haunting. Freaked over “Lilac Wine” and the last two tracks were awesome.
Nina Simone on hieno artisti. Tämä levy on jäänyt multa kokonaisuutena kuuntelematta, kuten aivan liian moni muukin hänen kokopitkistään. Black Is The Colour Of My True Loves Hair on super vahva biisi! Muut jää hieman kevyiksi erityisesti soundiltaan, mutta toisinaan tekstiltäänkin. 3/5
Rikollisen vähän oon Nina Simonelta kokonaisia levyjä kuunnellut. Tää ihan hyvä, voi iskeä joskus vielä kovempaakin.
Word. She's supremely inspiring. The music doesn't age well, though. But I can see how it was a reflection from a period when music was less about flash than about substance.
I can offer respect to it, but this sound is not my alley. Four Women is surpising content, and much of the rest is fine, but i'm not particularly taken by her voice and the mood created.
Ok do I went in thinking I'll get a woman singing, buth then it was a man. So 1 star atleast for bamboozeling me. And it's very chill, suave and sexy. It's aight, 3/5
Nice jazzy soulful music. A little heavy on the vibrato sometimes.
Nina Simone. Plain and simple.
This is what 90s movies want their jazz clubs to sound like. Great
Wonderful, earthy and moody, beautiful vocals.
This sounds like classic territory, but her voice didn't sustain me throughout.
I liked it ok 6/10
Good album with great singing and music. Not really what I'm after today, but good shit. Particularly enjoyed Either Way I Lose
5/10. Maybe worth a 6/10, but not very memorable.
Loved the sound of this, across the board. Her voice was great.
Very calming and Their voice was soothing. Not sure if I’d listen to it again but was a decent album overall
Nina Simone has such a great characteristic voice for jazz. I'm only familiar with a few of her songs, so this entire album was new to me. Most of these songs were decent, though not many of them really stuck with me. This slow, vocal jazz style is something I enjoy putting on in the background but not always actively listening to.
I listened through this twice and there are nice songs and some that are not so great for me. I think overall, it was a good listen, but not necessarily something I'd come back to. Sorry, Nina. 3/5
Some great vocals and enjoyable soul, but there are a little too many slow jams for my taste.
I like some of these songs, but others are a little too down-tempo for my tastes.
I mean, this is not my type of music, but I can see how it would make the list.
Nina is an insane singer- powerful and emotive. I really like her as well as the jazz instrumental backing
Highlight: Break Down and Let It All Out.
2/12/2022 Today's Album: "Wild Is The Wind" by Nina Simone - The bluesy opener I Love Your Loving Ways is a bouncy track to kick off this classic record. Being a 1966 blues record, one might expect this album to be riddled with genre clichés and a lack of innovation, but that is not the case. The song Four Women takes each verse to take the perspective of a woman being taken advantage of or in a position of vulnerability and the slow grooving piano tune in the back creates a somber and mysterious atmosphere for the story to take place in. What More Can I Say is a slow love ballad that feels like the perfect song to slow dance to as the vinyl player crackles in the background. The instrumentals on these tracks are minimalistic and subtle, but serve the exact purpose they need to in each track. The track Lilac Wine is an emotional and slow expression of unsteadiness and continued feelings of vulnerability. It is a very powerful track while never getting too loud or dramatic. That's all I ask is another great track. I love the repeated "nobody"s and the vocal performances borders on Sinatra levels of pomp and circumstance. The rest of the tracks sort of follow this trend. They all have an extremely solid instrumental foundation without having really too much in the mix and Nina's vocals are the shining star atop every track. I really like this album and I think a lot of tracks are perfect slow dancing material. The production leaves a tad bit to be desired, but the tunes are great and theres a ton of talent across the 11 tracks on this record. If you like 60s soul and blues, this is a record for you. Score: 7.5 Great Highlights: Lilac Wine, That's All I Ask, Break Down And Let It All Out, If I Should Lose You
I have heard of Nina Simone, but I don't know if I've ever heard any of her music. Most of the album was good. "I Love Your Lovin' Ways" and "Lilac Wine" might be worth a re-listen. The second half of the album, was less enjoyable. Simone sings a few of the tracks with enough vibrato in her voice that I began asking myself if I didn't like this album. It was good to finally hear some music from Simone. Rounding up gives this album 3 stars.
Enjoyable
a little too retro but i like the throwback cover
Nina Simone had a crazy-unique voice - at times sounding very deep and masculine and then others where she could reach the high notes with such power (e.g. ending of "Four Women"). Very compelling. The music is at times not terribly interesting to me but the best songs are really good, much of the first 5 or 6 especially - it's interesting as a fan of Jeff Buckley to hear this. There's the obvious connection with "Lilac Wine" which he covered on his debut album but more than that in listening to this album you can hear how much he copped from her in terms of vocal style. Nothing wrong with that but when I hear praise for Buckley's vocals it bears remembering where it came from. Interesting to read that "Four Women" was actually banned due to the lyrics which makes me like it even more. I'm less partial to some of the slower jazz-vocal cuts (e.g. "Wild Is The Wind") and steer more towards the first half of the album and bluesier songs. 7/10 3 stars - I'm sure if vocal jazz was more of my thing I'd have given this at least a 4 but it's definitely worth listening to by all.
Some classic soul, with touches of baroque-pop around the edges. Her voice's timbre can change quite drastically from song to song, which I found quite interesting.
Very fun blues 12 bar/ jazz album. Kinda really enjoyed Four Women, lyrically amazing and works so well. Rest of the album didn’t enjoy as much. Still alright though.
3.5...this one holds up really well and is good easy listening.
55a vana album. Aeglane jazz/r&b. Üsna nauditav.
not bad
Interesting for the period
The instrumentals of this album are so so good- smooth, relaxing. This is not an album to listen to when you want to get amped up, but definitely to relax. It’s not an album I would listen to over and over but still a solid album.
I did like some of these songs, but I just don't think I'm much of a fan of Nina Simone's voice.
There were some moments I actually really loved, and some I didn't care as much for. Very classy and soulful. A lot of excellent piano that impressed me. Worth a re-listen. Lilac wine is a classic
I like Nina Simone, I like her voice a lot. But at the same time, none of the songs in this particular album truly move me.
-I like the speed pick-ups in "Break Down And Let It All Out" -I like all the cool stuff happening in "Either Way I Lose" -Very nice piano and great singing. Very high quality, just not really my style
nice piano and voice dude in last song made me laugh
Probably not something I'll ever go back to but I liked the sound.
Dope and relaxed. Alto? Control her voice well. Great piano work.
gentle, many hits in others
Nice easy Listening. Nothing more nothing less. 3/5
Classic rock, pop and blues
Pretty damn beautiful record. Closer to a 3.5
I get why people would like this, powerful voice, meaningful lyrics, emotional music. Just not my thing really.
Passionate voice overlaying smooth jazz. Offers a strong social commentary, especially with "Four Women", and I love how the mood gets increasingly tense. My favorite track is "Break Down and Let It All Out". Jazz is fun and varies from track to track but nothing to write home about.
Four Women
Four Women. Truly spectacular.
Reminds me of the officers club for some reason.
Love her voice, especially some of the material with a bit more grit to them. Good to listen to a couple times, but didn't grab me.
fairly generic sounding soul, not sure if this was revolutionary at the time and loads of stuff copied it, or if it was never all that
Soulful
Yep. Sounded exactly like I expected it would. Great stuff, but not generally to my taste.
Break Down and Let It All Out isto jedna dobra stvar, Wild is the Wind je tako divan instrumental zajedno sa glasom za uživati u noćnom društvu uz kamin i eventualno koja čašica dobrog brendija.
E određene stvari od Nine jako jako volim, al nisam nikada baš komplet album poslušao, tako ni sad, prekinuh na pola, j e b i g a.
Talented singer, I like the slower and more heartfelt music. However, it is not my style
Solid album, not my style. 3/5
i see how it’s influential but i’m ngl i didn’t really enjoy listening
Mostly nice singing. Songs are a reasonable length.
Sad
if i didn't know she was playing the piano and singing together i'd have been a little underwhelmed with this album, but the mad piano skillz while singing is some seriously impressive stuff. however, its not really my bag so i'd be surprised if i listen again.
It's good, but prefer Jeff Buckley's version of 'Lilac wine' and Greg's version of 'Black is the colour'.
Beautiful, soulful voice, not really my cup of tea though.
Decent listen
I do like Nina Simone, but this album isn't her best. Still enjoyable though, even if I'd rather listen to her earlier stuff
One of my favorite things about this generator is that I get to discover a number of samples I didn't know about beforehand - Four Women being one of them. Also, the Bowie album we got earlier has a cover of this album's title song, which is cool. Only listened to this album once cause I'm a little behind but I liked it a good bit Saved: Four Women
I've always liked her since first hearing her; let's see how this album resonates with me; might just be a 3, with a couple of extra-good songs -- not sure that the overall will be enough to get to 4. She's a good singer and has killer emotion, but the tunes and rhythms in the first 4 songs don't do much for me. Overall, a lot of her stuff doesn't do much for me, but the songs that do resonate, hit like a ton of bricks. 3/5.
.
pleasant
It begins in the most amazing way with first two tracks... but after that it evolves in a good r&b blues album, but not outstanding.
Highlight: Break Down and Let It All Out.
gran voz
never listened to her before (other than a single track n the wireless) - quite good
La primer canción me dio una idea de como seria el album pero luego se volvió mas lento. Chingon el impacto que debe tener este album socialmente hablando.
false
It's a decent album of jazz singing, but it's nothing exceptional.
Not my favorite :(
Not my type
Beautiful stuff. The really jazzy songs are the best. 7/10
I feel…ambivalent about this one? Like, I sort of like the music, but I also sort of find her voice annoying. And the slightly obsessive part of me was really annoyed by the “lie-lock” wine song.
Erg rustig, een soundbite uit dit album komt terug in de muziek van logic
nice one nina.
I can appreciate Nina Simone, but it doesn't really do a ton for me.
A well known name for me. But I had never listend to an album of her. It was pleasant to listen to.
I imagine Four Women would've hit pretty hard back then, sad that it is equally relevant today. Black is the colour of my true love's hair was great.
3-4
Not something I'd normally listen to but enjoyable.
It's fine. I wasn't totally in the mood which didn't help. I've listened to her material before and enjoyed it though.
It a album you need to be in the mood for
Liked it. Lilac wine was too slow for my liking. Not music to listen to while working.
Bit heavy going
Voz intensa e inesquecível. Destaques para: Four Women, Lilac Wine e Black is the Colour...
Vild vokal, jazz/blues, lækker klaver. Standout: Four Women
It was good. Nice and mellow and jazzy.
not too bad, definitely not my preferred style but it was good kinda background music jazz. will probably never listen again though lol
2 out of 5. No hate just not for me.
Its alright. Hard to rate such an important artist when the music doesnt touch you that much Another iconic sample spotted tho!
Not a fan of this one. Pretty mediocre song selection, loosey-goosey tuning and intonation, anal-retentive vibrato, underwhelming delivery. Don't know what the authors were going for here, so let's take a little detour into the book -- their argument hinges on the adjective "convincing" to nominate this album. I find the performance and material too languid to warrant acclaim. Yet another tally against professional music critique.
5/10
Thought this would have been better.a few good. some not so good tracks.
Muy aburrido. Lo escucho un domingo y me pego un corchazo en las bolas. Entiendo que dentro de su estilo debe ser bueno porque mala musica no es pero a mi no gusta todo en disco asi. *What mor can i say es un gran tema.
dont really like
Nada muito a se dizer.. disco bom mas acredito que não seja um dos melhores da artista.
🤮
Not the usual type of music I like but I tried to be open minded. Still not one of my favorites, even though it really stayed on theme i feel like I was always waiting for something more.
Abbastanza moscio.
no es mi estilo
It is probably down to me, but I expected a lot more from this. I was quite quickly somewhat bored with it. Of course Nina Simone isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination but it just fell a bit flat. 2/5
emmm not my fv but chill
PEACHES
Some extremely unique vocals that were quite different track to track. Historically I’m sure very important but I have a hard time revisiting this when more modern music is available. Not bad per se but likely won’t visit again.
Not for me.
Can't help but feel I'm being gaslit here. I'm seeing so many people describe her as one of the most powerful vocalists of her time, but the best I can say for her is that she's expressive and has a unique voice. Personally I don't care for her voice either. What *IS* genuinely excellent is the arrangement quality. There is a lot of good in that respect. Tons of unique stylings and pairings of instrument/vocals. Easily the best part of the album. But the main item on display isn't half as good as people are suggesting it is.
na
Not a bad album, not for me
While the voice is clearly exceptional, many of the songs are either weak or just annoying I think there were better Nina Simone albums that could have made it to this list
Not really my kind of jam but like the talent. 2.5/5
There are times when I love Nina's soulful bluesy voice, but others where it just doesn't land. Favorite track: Four Women
"Four women" är vrålstark, "Black is the colour...“ och 'Wild is the wind" bra även om jag föredrar Bowie. Men resten är aptrist och spretigt. Menlös orkesterjazz tillräckligt standard för Café Norrköping, nån rhythm blues hon inte alls behärskar och gospelig dussinsoul som inte sticker ut nånstans. Att det är en samling förklarar en del men ursäktar det inte. Nina är på tok för ojämn åt alla håll. Nedre tvåa
Snooze…2
Not really my thing. Great voice.
No me gustó, no lo volvería a escuchar por mi cuenta. 3/10
Hyvää shittiä jos on nukahtamisvaikeuksia.
Mega lame
great voice, some very nice songs. the majority of the album is her lounge singer act which I really don't like. Again a few nice songs which made me more interested but still not enough of that, rating it a 2
Уважаем, но слушать не будем
Nothing in this album really drew me in. She’s got a strong voice. I’ll give her that and she’s pretty damn good on piano so two out of five but probably should be at one cause I didn’t save any songs.
it was fine. did'nt get the hye if im being honest. only 2 tracks were worth listening.
Too sad
My name is PEACHEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!! Also thought it was a dude singing the entire time.
I really did not enjoy this album. Her voice does not compliment the instrumentals at all.
This is a soulful, jazzy, piano-driven album. Notable pieces for me included "Four Women" and "Lilac Wine". Though this album had its stellar moments (carried by the lyrics and Simone's powerful voice matched with more subdued instrumentals), this wasn't something I'd reach for again.
DON'T GET ME WRONG i love Nina Simone! I just like her other iconic album better
A great talent but somehow this gives me anxiety that I don't wish to examine further.
Hmm. I want to like it, but I just didn't. Too depressing?
1: Wild Is The Wind 2: Four Women 3: Either Way I Lose
Not for me.
um
Was expecting a nice listen after the first song, but then it slowed down considerably, and I couldn't connect with most of the songs. Quite relaxing to listen to, but neither the genre nor her voice is for me, alas.
The album namesake didn’t move my needle, super moody record
A few ok songs. Not best of Nina.
Przyjemne, spokojne piosenki, moją ulubioną jest "Four Women". Reszta się dla mnie nie wyróżnia. 2,5/5
2/5
I quite like a bit of Nina Simone. This was fine. Didn’t find it revolutionary or extra special though.
I know Nina Simone by name but didn't recognise anything here. I kinda liked it but I am certain this is something that needs more listens.
Not for me
Didn't do much for me.
I love Nina's voice, but not the biggest fan of this album. Highlights: "Lilac Wine"
As much as I love Mississippi Goddam I disliked this album in its entirety.
Powerful voice but content is overall is not as powerful
Ok, bo mostly boring. Not my type of soul.
not quite my favorite
Nina’s voice is deep and smooth and she sings a love songs with minimal but great instrumentation. I didn’t really connect with it, but I can tell why this album is important to people. 2.0/5.0
Either way I loose geil Sehe auch Szenarien in denen ich das wieder hören würde, aber Nina hat mich gerade wo, wo ich nicht Geduld hatte für manche Songs 4/10
Was recommended the album Grace from Jeff Buckley yesterday, the one song I saved in my playlist was Lilac Wine. Was pleasantly surprised to hear that exact song in this album.
Eh it's ok. I think I'm having an off week because nothing has resonated with me so far. I know Nina Simone is a legend, but nothing is coming out at me from this album.
It had a few good songs but her voice was a little annoying.
its not really my vibe, although there's something i like in every song and i think its just the music and the instruments used but the singing rhythm isn't really something i like so i wont be adding any songs to my playlist but i appreciate it because its not BAD music. OH and one thing i wanna add is that it reminds me so much of the princess and the frog idk it gives off those vibes a lot i think.
Feels like too big of a generational gap again. I guess I can appreciate the cultural significance but nothing I would put on. Nothing really lands with me
I can appreciate the artistry but this is not for me.
I can appreciate the music, and I can think of times and places where I would put this on; it's a vibe. But it's not really "my thing" generally. More like, I enjoyed the upbeat songs because of the mood I was in, especially I love your lovin' ways, and then the change of pace of other songs turned me off.
2/5
not really my taste but there were a few songs i liked
It’s not bad for the sixties, but I wouldn’t consume it in my free time.
2 out of 5 This was hard for me to rate a 2. I understand she is a legend but this music is not for me. I really tried. Man her voice is DEEP.
carino, però non mi va molto di ascoltare sto genere al momento. molto anni '60. musica lenta dolce e triste, in genere d'amore. poi tutto il rispetto per l'autrice, mi ha solo colto nel momento sbagliato
92/1001 First listen. I listened to this all day and it was enjoyable but this, like so many other albums on this list, I just don’t know when else I would really play it. This is a great reason to participate in this project. I’m probably not going to listen to it again but hey, now I’ve finally listened to it. Also, Jeff Buckley (64/1001) was really into Simone and now I can really hear the influence. 4/10
like Nina Simone in general but didn’t love this album
This album started with a banger but turned to slow and jazzy for the remainder of the record. Not into much jazz. Sound was excellent, very melodic, just not my taste.
Im not really fw it. Why she calling this man daddy in What More Can I Say? I like Jeff Buckley's Lilac Wine better, but this one isnt bad
Not for me
It was okay. Some of the songs sound like Hugh Jackman sang them…
Genre: Old School Jazz Rating: 3/10. Honestly I’m just not really a fan of her vocal tone style most of the time, instrumentals were beautiful though. 3 songs added to the playlist. Favourite Song: What More Can I Say?
Not for me
Got a bit painful to finish listening to that voice
She is very good in the genre…I just don’t love the genre!!
not my type of genre but the end of what more can i say HIT ME
Refreshing, too jazzy for me
Liked Why Keep Breaking My Heart, not really my taste but interesting
Beautiful but not my jam.
Sure her voice is great but just not my sort of music
I recognize and appreciate the influence, but don't particularly care for the album
Very dreary.
I get it, it's just not for me
Wanted to love it but just couldn't get into the talky type singing. She does have a beautiful, powerful voice but I didn't like this style.
The skill of the singer and the music i not in doubt, but it was just to "jaz" for me.
3/10
Hmmmmm. Hrrrrrmmmmm. Nina Simone is a vaguely familiar name, though I've never heard of this album before. I've no clue what to expect from this cover, either. It's common for jazz albums to have a face on the cover and a minimal, bold colour palette, so I'm hedging my bets on that. It's also common for jazz albums to have a bunch of needless branding and tat on the cover, so I think I've got a winning prediction on my hands. Jazz, fuck yeah. Finally, a victory on my hands. Anyways, this is fine. Just a perfectly okay jazz album with vocals. Simone is an interesting vocalist. Her style of singing is quite distinctive, though I don't think it's well-matched with the music. Admittedly, she also kind of sounds like a man at a few points. The instrumentals are delicate and intimate, which I appreciate. They fade into the background a little, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that. "What More Can I Say?" is nice. I like a subdued piano number. Simone's vocals aren't all that bad on this one, either. "Wild is the Wind" has a nice, relaxing sound. Nothing on the rest of the album really sticks out to me, truth be told. Book time. A whole lotta nothin in there. Wikipedia says that this album had a very moderate critical response, though that's also about it. Hmm. Nina's a prolific artist, though it doesn't seem like she has an album where she truly crushes it (something which is also mentioned in the book). I guess I can let this album slide for the fact that I think Simone is worthy of immortalisation as an artist and I only have a few albums to replace the duds with, but I'd probably snub this one under better circumstances. I begrudgingly cosign this inclusion.
2.5 - Meh
Best Track - "I Love Your Lovin' Ways"
Early EMO! Hate the voice. Very depressing.
Nina is great, but I don't have much desire to seek out her music. Enjoyable when im listening to it, but I don't think much about her otherwise.
General takeaway: So, having just gotten done with Dusty Springfield's two albums, I'm starting to think that maybe women in the 60s weren't often performing their own/original material? Even though I'm not a huge fan of the "American Idol" feel of that, I'll try to be less judgy on this point going forward. Album-specific takeaway: Before today, the only song I'd ever heard by Nina Simone was 'My Baby Just Cares for Me' from the "Peter's Friends" soundtrack (a very good album, by the way, which, incidentally, is more "must hear" than most of the albums on this list - but I digress). None of the songs on this album feel as polished at that song - which I guess makes sense if this album is just a collection of leftovers. This, once again, has me completely questioning the author's decision to include this album over what are, no doubt, much stronger options from a fairly legendary artist's library. Yet another missed opportunity to hear some actual "must hear" material.
First track was not bad but the album got progressively less enjoyable after that. Sounds like the house band in the cocktail lounge at the Holiday Inn Hoboken circa 1960.
Sigh, I really wanted to like this because her voice is so AMAZING--nice and low with a big chunky vibrato. But the tunes were mostly so dull. Lots of those piano parts that sound like they were written by harpists, and lots of those percussion parts where they just go WISKY WISKY WISKY with the brushes the whole time. SNOOZE.
I fully appreciate that Nina Simone is a legend and for good reason but this album gives me the heeby-jeebies and not the fun kind.
Not my style
I respect the artist, but also the majority of the album is a bit too slow and minimal for my personal taste.
i don't love jazz. Nice blues songs
Nina Simone is fantastic. This isn't her best work. There are of course standout tracks, "Four Women" and "Lilac Wine" are timeless, "Either way I lose" clever and balanced. The rest feels patchwork, uneven. Simone seems to use the tracks as vehicles to show her vocal control and timbral range, often to the detriment of the songs them selves. The arrangements behind her are serviceable but uninspired. Don't let this album put you off Nina Simone. She is better than this, and those two or three tracks that do hit should give you a taste if you want to dig deeper.
Maso
63/100 drags on a bit, occasionally boring but pretty good at times
First album I’ve listened to of hers. Did not like it. Is her other work better? Don’t get at all why this is must listen to. Is it because she is boldly singing about African American themes during civil rights era?
Being in the room submerged in the music would have a whole different impact than listening to this album at the airport. It’s falling a bit flat.
Artiste inconnue. Blues/Jazz très standard, trop basé sur le chant (je n'apprécie pas sa voix). Les instruments sont peu mis en avant, pas de chorus pour agrémenter l'ensemble, donc pas de seconde écoute pour moi. =>2/5
Very old timey, listen once and call it a day.
le tendria que dar otra escucha, cosas que me gustaron y cosas que no, eso si tremenda voz
Some very repetitive songs, writing is pretty mid.
lovely voice, but the pace is too slow for me.
An interesting album. I wouldn't say it is for me but it is not bad. 5.1/10
ovo je načelno dobro, ali glas mi nikako ne leži, na kraju me nažalost ostavilo ravnodušnim
Pereza
Too slow for me
Not my thing at all. Thought it was a dude until he said "My hips invite you"
forgettable
This might be an unpopular decision but this album got pretty grating as it went on. Something about her vocals just made me agitated. I think Nina has a lot of talent but it's just not for me. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
Good, but I’ll probably not listen again. Just didn’t capture me
Thought I would like this a lot more than I did. Most of the songs seemed slow.
Whilst I can appreciate Nina Simone’s talent, unfortunately I don’t like her voice - and this album has her at her warbly “best”.
Genuinely embarrassed that the only song I recognised off this record was "Four Women", and only because Jay-Z (a rapper I do not like, see previous review) sampled it in 4:44. Anyways, I genuinely didn't gel with Nina's voice as much I was hoping. I think I got ahead of myself by reading global and my group reviews, which raved about this thing; so I went in with extremely high expectations. Honestly, I really didn't enjoy this one. I know how talented Nina is - and I like her other stuff. But the weird male-sounding female voice really threw me off for a lot of the songs here. Wild is the Wind is really the song that turned me off this piece. I didn't enjoy it at all. This thing had some okay songs, but for the most part I really don't think this record was for me. I'm sorry Nina, you definitely don't deserve this - but I just didn't gel with any of the songs on here.
So everyone at work probably thinks I’m going through a break up or something after hearing me listen to this. A lot of bummer songs on here, and I didn’t really care for her voice at times.
Not my favorite Nina Simone album.
The lyrics to Four Women are incredible. Nina is an extremely talented singer but the album isn't really my vibe. I think the beat is too slow and it feels too emotional for me.
The community here really loves this album. What am I missing, David Bowie???
Not terrible for a slow jazz album, but I didn’t love Nina’s voice (especially because of the reverb so common in the 60s) and there was way too much vibrato.
objectively this album is absolutely beautiful. i just wish it was more for me. it’s lyricism is astounding. the only song i really enjoyed was the opener. the record overall just had too much repetition and the vibrato in her voice started to irk me near the end of the albums run time. again this is absolutely very good it just couldn’t be less for me
Njae, alltså det mest intressanta är väl variationen mellan var albumet börjar o slutar och bra sångröst men fastnar inte för materialet tyvärr.
# 494 ; Wild Is The Wind : 03/06/2025 They've done a pretty decent job, Ok overall, but nothing exceptional. I Love Your Lovin' Ways was the best IMO # 212 in Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of all time (2020)
Kinda of boring. Decent voice but I think she has better stuff
HERESY ALERT! I would like this album quite a bit better without the vocals. I get that she sings of important subjects. Fine. But her lyrics are neither poetic nor narrative, just literal and expository. Being earnest isn’t enough. I can ignore lyrics, and usually do. The main problem is that voice. A lot of ladies with gorgeous voices were singing important songs at this moment. (Abbey Lincoln comes to mind.) Nina's voice is such a mess; she sounds like a Muppet. She’s really pitchy and it doesn’t sound musical to me. Her phrasing is affected and distracting. Her “vibrato” is tremorous; I can’t stop thinking that she has palsy. And, like Barry Gibb (or Kermit the Frog) she never incorporates any chest into her voice - it goes from thin/reedy to brassy, but it's always pinched.
Wanted to like it. Music is great. Not big on the vocals. Too much tremolo, trying too hard with the voice.
It's not my thing, but wow is Four Women a powerful song. I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. My feelings for it were pretty mid, but I can definitely understand why it's included, and why Nina Simone is so beloved.
Legendary Singer. Obviuosly. But average album, and dated
langweilig 2
Just OK.
Wild Is the Wind is a compilation of songs pulled from various recording sessions, and that patchwork nature is evident. The album lacks a clear sense of cohesion or structure, which makes the listening experience feel somewhat disjointed. The first two tracks start strong—bold, powerful, and emotionally charged. They set a high bar and establish a compelling tone. However, the momentum shifts quickly into slower, more introspective piano ballads. Simone’s rendition of “Wild Is the Wind” is beautiful in its own right, though I personally find David Bowie’s later cover more impactful. I listened to the album multiple times in one day, which suggests it certainly has merit. There are standout moments, but overall, the pace slows too often, veering into a territory that felt dreary to me. Favourite tracks: “I Love Your Lovin’ Ways” and “Four Women” are absolute highlights—both are fierce, loud, and captivating. A fantastic way to open an album. Least favourite track: “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” didn’t work for me. It felt overly slow, meandering, and ultimately unengaging. Album artwork: A cool, striking cover that adds to the album's mystique.
“what more can i say” was the first one i really liked, which is strange because i usually mess with jazz more than i did with this album. mid overall at best. 2/5.
I love Nina Simone when she’s good, but her catalogue is super uneven. The repertoire and arrangements are not always well considered. I had never heard this album and I must say I was not missing out.
The song “Four Women” blew me away. Nina Simone had a great voice. It is really just too bad that she wasted her talent on this album singing crappy love songs. I would have loved to hear more songs like “Four Women”.
Not for me.
Emotionally heavy. Beautiful in the same way some funerals are beautiful. Definitely not easy listening, touches difficult issues. Too heavy for me.
No niestety, barwa głodu Niny czyni dla mnie tę płytę niesłuchalną, mimo że to kawał dobrej muzyki. Po prostu nie znoszę jej głosu!
Not my cup of oak milk latte with a dash of caramel and gratings of cinnamon.
4/10 - not a gym album and also not a great album in general. The second song was also kind of weird to listen to
I dont care for her voice tbh. I first thought the singer was a man. Can image this playing in like a old ballroom. Its soul yes but still not resonating with me too much.
I found most of this album somewhat difficult to listen to. I kept checking how much time was left on it. It just isn't my style and those vocals are unbearable. There are some fine moments but overall, ugh. The instrumentals are pretty great tho, so I will round up to a 2. Actual rating....1.5. Liked Songs: "I Love Your Lovin' Ways" , "Why Keep On Breaking My Heart" , "Either Way I Lose"
This rating indicates my enjoyment, not her talent. I was not super enthused when it popped up, but this seems like a great time to revisit someone lots of people love! Despite listening with as open ears as I could manage, her voice remains not for me. I recognise her talent, but I had to force myself to finish the album.
Exemplifies Simone’s power to turn any song into something deeply personal and profound. Not really my style, but i respect it.
Nice and mellow. Not my jam.
4/10
Very nice, just not in the mood for this today.
Whitney doesn’t like. Bluesy.
Love Nina but I wasn’t a huge fan of this album. Felt a bit drab towards the end.
I thought I would like this more but it really never got going for me.
44/1001 - Weird sounding upright piano. I recognize that it's objectively good/well sung (the production and recording is pretty awful though, lots of weird compression and clipping artifacts) but I didn't like it very much.
Honestly if it wasn't her singing I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Her voice just isn't for me
This felt like the type of music I'd hear in the background of a fancy restaurant. Not *the* music, but the *type* of music. Just... off somehow, like it was trying to be original poorly while trying to emulate established music (not bad-ly). Also overall I thought it was kinda boring.
Already forgot the album
A bit enjoyed the music, sometimes the singer sang in an unpleasant way. Not of my taste.
Too slow for me, prefer her I Put A Spell On You album
Not for me
Honestly was a bit dissapointed, but this was ok as a whole. 2.5/5
I cant decide if I like Nina or not. This album got on my nerves by the end and I had to resist skipping songs. Based on that I am giving it a 2-star today.
Albumi #107, 12.11.2024 Blues-/soul-/jazzlaulajattaren kuudes albumi ilmestyi vuonna 1966. Albumin kappaleita on coveroinut mm David Bowie (Wild is the Wind) sekä Jeff Buckley (Lilac Wine).
I've never been a fan of her voice. Boring album.
This is definitely for someone it’s just not for me. When I give something a 2 it means it has merit for someone but to me this was mostly a slog and again not for me. Her voice is hit or miss with my ears. The vibrato is a bit much.
First time listening to Nina Simone in any capacity. Strange that an album full of outtakes and leftovers is considered not only some of her best work, but one of the essential albums in music history. Needless to say, it is a pretty diverse record. While the piano chops standout, the songs are nothing to write home about, maybe save for the opening and closing tracks. For all the hype “Four Women” gets, the song is not even the strongest on this album. Side two gets particularly dreadful. I give her props for pronouncing “Lilac” the correct way.
Hyvää laulantaa, mutta ei tee mieli kuunnella toistamiseen. Ei minua varten.
Pure voice over a bit of jazz piano is always good. The album gets verrrrrrryyy slow down the end. I remember my parents listening to Nina Simone through the early 70s, this album doesn’t hold up to time, comes in at (2.4*s) for me.
Some good songs
Was Ok
Okay- it was fine, easy listening, but I don’t know that it made me feel anything. None of the tracks grabbed my attention and it took me a minute to release it was over- meaning I had turned it out.
boring
Not for me
Nice vocals and nice singing, I can appreciate the artist’s talent. Just a bit slow for me.
Powerful and meaningful and all around great excellent. But ultimately wasn’t my jam.
Not my cup of tea at all
It's a delightful voice to listen to, and I'm glad for the challenge to have been educated and experienced it. But boy, did this one drag on. I really liked the upbeat bluesy rock'n'roll of I Love Your Lovin' Ways but the rest of the album slowed down to an almost pedestrian tempo and I found it far too slow and sad.
Solid. Didn’t listen as actively as I could have. Liked it!
I'm not totally sure what to say about this. It's totally not my style, and I really didn't enjoy it. It's just so archaic and so different from what I'm looking for. I think she's supposed to be an ace singer, but to my ear she's just OK - she's got a very smooth voice, but doesn't show a ton of range or emotion. I think that's just her style. I think this CD probably does a fine job of doing what it set out to do.
Ist mir etwas zu bluesig.
Impressive and unusual voice but this was a bit depressing, not my fave.
I appreciate it this album for its significance. I am very glad that I listen to it. However, although Nina Simone is incredible. I have heard other material of hers that I liked more. This album was actually intentionally created to be a sampling of her different styles and strengths and unfortunately for me it made the record a bit jumbled and disjointed.
Style was good. Her voice wasn’t easy on the ears though.
A little slow for me. Lilac wine was the song I liked the most
So so
Not my type of music but it was okk
Okay but not my thing
This is an extremely strong 2. I loved it. But can't give it a 3 based on other 3s.
That’s one husky broad
omg why are there SOOOO many of those 60s jazz albums. she obviously can sing but dude i had enough jazz on this list.
