Literally WTF. why haven't I heard some of these songs before - they are spellbinding. I have of course enjoyed Nina Simone songs before, but some of these are masterpieces. I'm in love with 'If I should lose you' and 'what more can I say'.. the piano playing, the lyrics, the chord progressions. 6/5

The instrumentals of this album are so so good- smooth, relaxing. This is not an album to listen to when you want to get amped up, but definitely to relax. It’s not an album I would listen to over and over but still a solid album.
I'm not sure what happened... started off strong, the lyrical power of "Four Women" was awesome, and of course "Lilac Wine" but then I just felt on edge and anxious for the second half. Also not my typical jam.

Pretty solid! I'd only heard small snippets of Nina Simone before this album, and I didn't think I'd like it much, because I expected it to all sound like the title track. But I was pleasantly surprised. Dips towards the end, but very good!
There were some moments I actually really loved, and some I didn't care as much for. Very classy and soulful. A lot of excellent piano that impressed me. Worth a re-listen. Lilac wine is a classic

Non conoscendola, mi aspettavo una Nina Simone diversa! Si è rivelata un'esperienza piacevole. Soprattutto per le dinamiche del suo pianoforte. L'album in sé l'ho trovato un po' lento, soprattutto verso la fine, pur essendo soli 38 minuti.
Ero partito un po' prevenuto con questo disco avendo visto l'anno e sentendo il primo pezzo. Conoscevo Nina Simone solo di nome (sicuramente avrò sentito qualche suo pezzo in giro). Mi sono sicuramente dovuto ricredere, questo album mi è arrivato molto e l'ho trovato molto autentico. Questo jazz '60 malinconico alla Julie London mi conquista abbastanza in generale ma la voce di Nina Simone è davvero particolare, molto espressiva ed estremamente tecnica (come spesso era all'epoca). I pezzi hanno tutti un qualche elemento che li caratterizza a livello compositivo o di arrangiamento e devo dire che i 38 minuti sono volati. Un 4 pieno.

Melodietjes klinken wel lekker, de muziek is goed uitgevoerd en de zang is zuiver. Dat is top! Maar ook al vind ik de up-tempo (soul-achtige) nummers heel erg leuk, de rustige (meer jazzy) nummers vind ik een beetje saai. Helaas heeft dit album vooral veel van die rustige nummers :-(. Daarnaast gaat de aparte stem van Nina naar verloop van tijd ook wat vervelen. Dus als ik dit hele album moet beoordelen, vind ik het niet zo heel geweldig. Mijn favorieten "I Love Your Loving' Ways", "Break Down And Let It All Out" en "Either Way I lose". **

The opener is slight compared to its follow-up, which I recognize thanks to its legacy as sample. In not too much longer, that song unfolds, with subtle drama and plenty of good nature. For forty minutes, it's the Nina's Voice Show; With minimal accompaniment, one still gets the distinct sense of traveling through many corners of American music. Comparisons are inevitable because of the mentioned samples and the Buckley cover served to me two months ago by this very site. The songs here have powerful forward momentum, but the lateral movements are quite delicate. That makes me think of Wild as an album not quite arresting enough to fall in love with, and then I hear the blatant parallel with Mitski's Nobody (which I was absolutely arrested by). Desaturation by familiarity: That's something decently new to yours truly. But in the interests of ending speculation about things I know nothing about: One hundred percent beautiful, fascinating as a document of singers'-songwriter's songs. I can't wait to digest it again and hear a more focused project. I can tell she's capable of a better run of songs and yet this one is better than so many others...

Absolutely wonderful album. A beautiful but authentic mix of genres that just feel good. Nina's songwriting is both challenging and comforting and she has the voice of an angel. Really surprised and pleased with this one.
Recently, I was watching Jett (an entertaining Carla Gugino vehicle) and Simone's cover of Save Me was featured, touted as clearly superior to Aretha's! Apparently, in the last 10 years or so, the arbiters of the zeitgeist decided that anyone who thinks Nina Simone is dank is suitably fetch. Since even entertaining the idea that Nina Simone is superior to the Queen of Soul is a particularly nauseating example of cultural revisionism, and I've never been favorably impressed by Nina Simone to begin with, I was reluctant to waste 45 minutes that I would never get back by listening to this album. Surprisingly, it isn't completely horrible. True, Simone doesn't have an especially impressive instrument, a definite liability in a musical era that was littered with tremendous R&B vocalists. Her pitch wobbles, the timbre of her voice is borderline unpleasant, and her vibrato is irritating. Several of the arrangements are dated, and frankly are pretty rank even for the time. But Simone is capable of expressing and communicating feelings through her admittedly limited vocals. And I was moved by her lyrics on Four Women. It is obvious to me, even being completely ignorant about Simone's personal life, that Simone brings emotional authority to her interpretations, and a willingness to bare her soul. That is not nothing. Still, putting this album on any kind of list? Come on now. Really?

This is my first time ever listening to Nina Simone. Her voice was certainly not what I was expecting, though it is compelling. This is not particularly my thing (I'm not enamored with jazz vocalists overall), but I think it's good. There's something ineffable about her voice and the lyrics she conveys. I also felt like the album got stronger as it went 4/5

Only a couple of songs are strong to me. The lyrics are very romantic, the voice of Nina Simone is amazing, but that's it. The album have a lot of weaknesses, really far from her best work as an album, maybe because it's made of leftovers from other sessions and compiled into this.
I get why people would like this, powerful voice, meaningful lyrics, emotional music. Just not my thing really.
Big fan of Nina Simone's style. I first heard of her back in the late 1980s. She had a hit song, "My Baby Just Cares for Me" when I was living in Europe. I had no idea it was an "old" song at the time. I never heard of her. Then I realized that I had an LP of her's that I got in a box of LPs I found at a garage sale. The Album was "Baltimore". Not one of her best, but had a couple of very good, likable songs. I started listening more to her, but had never really listened to this album until now. Stand Outs: Four Women Wild is the Wind

Passionate voice overlaying smooth jazz. Offers a strong social commentary, especially with "Four Women", and I love how the mood gets increasingly tense. My favorite track is "Break Down and Let It All Out". Jazz is fun and varies from track to track but nothing to write home about.
First listen for me, some epic crescendos. Love the bass voices on Either way I lose.

Ovo je prvi puta da se susrećem sa Ninom Simone u cijelosti, mislivši da cijeli album idem slušati. I što sam čuo je zapravo dosta dobar album, znao sam otprilike u šta se upuštam. Po ovome što sam čitao, gledao i pratio, ovo je više-manje kolekcija njenih pjesama skupljen u album. Na albumu se osjeti jako dobar jazz plus piano koji zna odskakat i pokazat da je najjači instrumental na ovom albumu. Naime iako je više-manje kolekcija pjesama, isto tako je i dosta cover pjesama na ovom albumu. Four Women sam odmah čuo u glazbi da me podsjeća na jednu stvar za koju se koristio taj sample i dobro sam čuo (Jay-Z - The Story of OJ). Break Down and Let It All Out isto jedna dobra stvar, Wild is the Wind je tako divan instrumental zajedno sa glasom za uživati u noćnom društvu uz kamin i eventualno koja čašica dobrog brendija.

A powerful, profound, and gripping album by an indisputable icon. While I was already familiar with Ms. Simone's enormous and versatile talent, I was not familiar with her story, which I read in the linked Wikipedia article. Wow. What a strong, brave, and visionary person. I hope more people get the chance to learn her story. And of course, listen to her wide-ranging, massive, and incredible body of work.

Отличный альбом. Опять же, имею крайне ограниченное представление об исполнителях в сфере, возможно, сопоставимых альбомов – тьма. Но даже если мы предположим, что сами композиции – продукт своего времени и оригинальностью не отличаются, то всё равно нельзя будет сказать, что вокальные партии Нины Симон, её голос может быть чем-то конвейерным. Да и композиции не воспринимаются как нечто вторичное, они грамотные: минималистичные аранжировки, где всё на своём месте, лаконичные мелодии, в которых всё равно есть место внутреннему развитию, замечательно. В целом, хорошая музыка. Но что для меня отличает хорошую музыку от прекрасной? Нет, не вклад в развитие жанра, не оказанное влияние на общество или конкретных людей. Это всё, конечно, хорошо, но отличную музыку для меня определяет катарсис. Момент, когда тот или иной трек берёт за яйца, грубо говоря, захватывает дух. Тут такое есть: концовка Four Women, вторая половина What More Can I Say? Альбом создаёт густую атмосферу, а записан так, будто обращён в вечность. Да, из-за не слишком высокой сложности существует риск, что просто-напросто быстро надоест. Но пока не надоело – это ведь чудесно.

Oh boy. I like Nina Simone, but I've only listened to under 50% of her discography - so it's great to add another album to my collection. Got to say, this is a weird choice as the ONLY Simone album on the 1001 list. Why not Little Girl Blue, High Priestess of Soul, or Nina Simone Sings the Blues - all three of which are more iconic? Wild is the Wind seems to be a collection of leftover tracks from other album sessions, and was out of print for many years. Having said that, it's really good! The style range from folk to blues to soul to jazz. Mostly ballads, but a few upbeat tracks. Love songs sit alongside tales of suffering. All held together by her smouldering voice with its dramatic flare. It might be a little miscellaneous, but it's certainly a good sampler of her talent.

I've always liked her since first hearing her; let's see how this album resonates with me; might just be a 3, with a couple of extra-good songs -- not sure that the overall will be enough to get to 4. She's a good singer and has killer emotion, but the tunes and rhythms in the first 4 songs don't do much for me. Overall, a lot of her stuff doesn't do much for me, but the songs that do resonate, hit like a ton of bricks. 3/5.

Nina Simone is a master of words, summoning vivid imagery and commanding you hear them with her soulful voice. The band is simply there to reinforce these things, but that's not to downplay their role! Everything works together in wonderful tandem to set a high bar for vocal jazz and soul music. Simone has one of the greatest voices, doing these songs great justice. The only complaint is that the hard-hitting songs on here (Four Women, Wild is the Wind) are watered down by the more forgettable ones, making the album weaker as a whole.
Arguably behind Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan in jazz singing terms but still an amazing artist. Couple of songs fell flat for me but Four Women alone will earn this a solid score

Regarded by many as Simone's greatest artistic triumph, Wild is the Wind his a collection of very different songs that work together on multiple levels. They work as social commentary, the singer voicing her frustration with the limited opportunities of African American women in a ways both overt and subtle. They also work as a showcase for the artist's versatility, as she tackles everything from sexy soul to soothing pop, from traditional folk to angry blues. Simone was not just capable of playing in these varied mediums; she could turn each into mesmerizing performance art, powerful self-expression composed of elegance and drama simultaneously.

Apparently this is an album made up of left over bits from other recording sessions, and it sounds like it. Generally it's quite nice, but a bit lacking in cohesion and some of the tracks sound a bit unfinished. I'm also not overly keen on her voice. Sure its objectively great, just not to my taste.

When it comes to older music, this is what I like. Much better than Tex and the Sad Cowboys chasing tiger tails. Nina sings with such heart and has such a strong presence just in the microphone. I liked some songs more than others but having never listened to one of her albums before (only singles) I can say I really enjoyed this. I also love the album cover, the hot pink really sticks out.

It's another emperor's new clothes album. People are too afraid to say they don't listen to this old music that doesn't have a good production quality. It was good then, it inspired later artists, it has a place in music history, you should hear it once I guess. It isn't something you listen to again though because there are newer, better albums today. That's with a lot of this list. She's a good singer but time changes all, even music.

Esta mujer me transmite mucho cuando la escucho. Además, todo suena muy bien y pues a veces las letras tienen gran impacto; otras veces pueden ser muy románticas y todo bien. Wow, coming full circle with Nina Simone. Our very first album on this list, Station to Station, featured Bowie's cover of "Wild is the Wind," and here we are at the source (well not exactly, but a source for Bowie's cover). We also heard Jeff Buckley's cover of "Lilac Wine," which I didn't realize until today. Nina Simone has one of the most haunting, affecting voices to ever grace a mic. She can communicate levels of pain you never knew were possible. So many tracks on here that stop me in my tracks. Loved hearing "Four Women," sampled by Jay-Z and later, to devastating effect, by Pusha T. And the title track is such a powerful song, made more moving by Nina's lyrical revisions: "You touch me, I hear the sound of mandolins. You kiss me, with your kiss my life begins." I still think I prefer the structure and composition of the Cat Power cover, but Nina's voice is undeniable. Loved this one. Favorite tracks: Wild is the Wind, Four Women, Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Lilac Wine. Album art: Nothing crazy, but the pink and black color combo is one of the best. The font and art style definitely put this in the '60s, but it feels timeless. 4.5/5

Some interesting lyrics (a tad rambly), glimpses of life as a black woman in the US '60. Good musical variety. "I love your loving ways" stands out. "Four women" is trying to tell a story, but the "my name's" shtick makes it kinda forced.

I feel…ambivalent about this one? Like, I sort of like the music, but I also sort of find her voice annoying. And the slightly obsessive part of me was really annoyed by the “lie-lock” wine song.
Nina Simone has such an expressive voice and tells stories to powerfully. I was expecting a lot from this album, and was expecting more than I got somehow. But after listening to the album a couple times I realized that part of what makes these songs special is their depth - I could probably listen 100 times and still have something to learn from them.

I Love Your Lovin' Ways Four Women What More Can I Say? Break Down and Let It All Out
Her voice sounds old. You really feel like she's going through some shit. It took a second listening for me to recognize that a lot of the instrumentation was pretty modern. Some of it, like WKOBMH, sounds kinda movie score-ish, which is cool, but there are neat guitar riffs, Cool drum pieces, and even some cool showtune harmonies. Favorite Songs: Four Women What more can I say - My slow song of choice for this album. Lilac Wine Break Down and Let it All out Why Keep on Breaking My Heart

I have a pretty great 2 disc Nina Simone anthology that I listened to alot for awhile but I've never really listened to one of her albums in it's entirety. It's hard to choose with such a long and prolific career (and I'd say she was pretty consistently great through it all). This album has some great tracks for sure. It's fairly spare in it's arrangements on most tracks and she has an amazing ability to use space/silence to build drama. Powerful voice, incredible piano playing. I can't even imagine seeing this live. It would be so intense. I had to check and see if spotify had changed to a new album when I heard the last track "Either way I lose" come on.
I can appreciate Nina Simone, but it doesn't really do a ton for me.
I would like to listen again when paying closer attention. Some fun songs and some good ballets.

A Four Women vége lenyűgöző (Stars flashbackek, khm, Bojack Horseman), pláne kombinálva a What more can I say-jel, majd a Lilac Wine közölte, mennyire iszonyatosan változatos lesz ez az egész lemez. Break down and let it all out annyira energikus, Nina hangja mindent elvisz, csak sajnos kicsit túl hirtelen lesz vége. Why keep on breaking my heart kimondottan gyenge, a címadó dal áriázása sem illik a fejemben Nina Simonéről kialakult képhez, viszont ennek ellenére megmutatja, mennyire sokszínű és sokműfajú tud lenni. Mondjuk a Black is the colour of my true love's hair cégére már szeretnék visszatérni a Break Down energikusságához. A legutolsó dal talán kicsit visszahozott belőle, de összességében a lemez második fele csalódás. Ennek ellenére így is került több dal is a csillagozott listámra.

What a voice. Damn this album is decent even though I don't like Jazz that much.
Soothing and beautiful
Nina Simone is a pleasure to listen to even if you only know her through being sampled all over the place. She makes you feel the struggles and torment of black Americans through this album. She didn’t have a bad track; her vocal performance was outstanding and very track felt new. The Soul, Jazz vibe was so fun and it's clear why artists use her work, the most famous being Jay-Z using the beat and vocals from ‘Four Woman’. The album didn’t stop on this great track it also had soulful powerful vocals on ‘Break Down and Let It All Out’. Overall this album was amazing, I will defiantly come back in the future.

Fantastic album, haven't really listened to Nina Simone before but thought this album was great.
Not something I'd normally listen to but enjoyable.
I am sure this is a really great record but it's just not what my earholes find overly pleasurable.
I knew Wild Is The Wind from Bowie's Station to Station, never realised it was a cover. The song Four Women is an emotional gut punch, very powerful.
It's fine. I wasn't totally in the mood which didn't help. I've listened to her material before and enjoyed it though.
I know that Simone is an incredible singer, but I just wasn't a fan of this at all.
I liked this album a lot and this one makes sense as to why it it on the list. Will have to dig deeper into her extensive catalog.

Nina Simone was a gift to the Earth and we didn't deserve her. MY NAME IS PEACHES. RIP Queen. Hopefully this isn't the only Nina album on this list.

Não é o tipo de coisa que eu escutaria todo dia, mas definitivamente um álbum que me impressionou. Alem de ser de um estilo e uma gravação completamente diferente das coisas que eu costumo ouvir, um destaque total pra voz, e também pras letras. A gravação pela época, me impressionou bastante.
primeiro contato com um disco inteiro da Nina (eu sei, vergonhoso) - não esperava uma gravação boa assim, por se tratar de anos 60. Certamente, o melhor tratamento possível dado a gravação se tratando de uma cantora tão famosa e proeminente - não é meu costume gravações tão focadas na voz, mas a voz dela é bem chamativa e emocional mesmo, comanda uma atenção. Umas faixas aqui (I love your loving ways, wild is the wind, either way i lose) eu ainda vou ouvir algumas vezes, achei bem interessante, curti. É até difícil fazer comentários mais embasados pq é algo mto fora mesmo do q eu tenho costume de ouvir

This was honestly gorgeous. A surprising new discovery even though I had heard of Nina Simone. Every song on the record captivated me.

not too bad, definitely not my preferred style but it was good kinda background music jazz. will probably never listen again though lol
