It was good. Not really what I listen to, but it was good.
Interesting but ultimately not for me.

Excellent voice. Not really my style of accompanying music though
I liked a lot of this. 3.5/5
It’s good, not really my jam, but definitely some talented musicians. The tracks definitely fit together and make a cohesive album.
Nina is an excellent passionate singer. Not a huge jazz vocal fan so I doubt it made the same impression that it would on others.
Lady got soul! Not all songs to my liking but that's just personal taste. I don't know any about Nina Simone's life but I feel like she's seen and been through sh*t.
Emotional and powerful. One hell of a musician and a stunning vocalist. Absolutely wild to think that something so powerful was a collection of unused recordings.
A brooding, melancholic vocal jazz record carried mostly by Nina Simone's powerful vocals and beautiful piano. Except for the track Four Women, all songs are about love and heartbreak. Very easy on ears and sleep inducing (in a good way). Favorites: I love your loving ways, Four Women, Lilac Wine, Wild is the wind (absolutely gorgeous), Either way I lose.
Love and appreciate this artist's work but prefer her more upbeat songs with more instrumentation. Nina and her piano are pretty but it's kinda slow.
I’m torn on this one. I love her voice and the drama and beauty she brings to her music. She makes even the slowest songs feel very alive. But a lot of this was so slow that it’s not something I’d choose to listen to very often. She is super cool though.
Beautiful voice and great for sampling (3.5/5)
Started off strong and enjoyable, then her voice turned on me and I dropped to more of a it’s ok.
This is given due to her voice so a 3.5. I understand if you don’t like her voice but I did
Eh. Her voice really didn’t do it for me it was too fluttery. The songs were just kinda the same vibe from song to song so this album was just kinda meh. I really didn’t think this was all that special of an album personally. Musically and instrumentally I thought it sounded good but that was about it.
felt very conflicted on this album. from musical composition aspect, I really enjoyed the pieces. vocally though, it just didn't do it for me. vocals felt flat & cumbersome. 2.5 stars
Stunning but outside of a few tracks I can’t imagine listening to it again.
Probably OK but not my taste
I dig jazz but never quite got into jazz singers. Nina Simone is very talented though. She pours emotion and soul into these songs, you can feel the mood in each word. Her delivery is impressive and varied, she can hold a long still note or go into an intense pulsing vibrato. Her tone conveys the message of the song deeper than the lyrics. Still, I don’t see myself revising this much but I’m glad I heard it. A handful of strong songs and a couple of ok ones.
Ok little bit slow and somber but some interesting moments
Four Women was a powerful song (lyrics). I like Lilac Wine. She has a nice, velvety, voice.
Less than what I had expected from Ms. Simone. Please tell me there is another album on this list that is more representative of her true talent.
Love her but this is not her best work.
6/10
Man, now I have an aching in parts of my soul I didn't even know were there.
The album was quite good, the first two tracks specifically, became a bit of a chore at the end. Sample of 4 Women --> story of OJ the highlight, incredible song. Not to big of a jazz fan, I prefer that sound to be mixed into more modern elements like rap, even in some elements of rock, im thinking Floyd, but pretty solid nonetheless, can't wait for the next 1000 :) Overal 6.5/10
Good album, really enjoyed it
Nina Simone has character and a great voice. There’s definitely some quirkiness to the music and that keeps things interesting for sure. The second half slows things down a bit and that’s where it lost my full attention. Still appreciate this for what is still an interesting jazz album. 3 stars
I had never heard a Nina Simone album and it starts off really strong with I Love Your Lovin' Ways and Four Women. Both songs have different tones and shows how versatile Nina Simone was. I really enjoyed this album, though I am not sure I would revisit the album at any point. In the long run, it is not my type of music, but very much deserves to be heard. One thing I have learned about this project is there are albums that I am really glad that I heard, even if I was not going to listen to those albums very frequently. This music is timeless and I can hear these songs on the radio now. Nina Simone would also manage to make the songs less boring than Norah Jones, which is a low bar to clear of course.
3.5 What a voice.
Cool and jazzy, with a distinct sound. Nobody sounds like Nina Simone but Nina Simone. Definitely had an aged sound to it, but still very listenable and well recorded. The timbre of Nina's voice takes some getting used to, and can become grating (to me, at least) after a while, but she's great in smaller doses. Three stars.
I'm gonna be honest, Nina Simone is a wonderful voice, but I just couldn't enjoy this, even after two listens. I think it's an important album, but it just isn't for me.
Very nice
wanted to like this more than I actually did. still good tho
Great singer, a little slow for me
Not her best songs/performances
Nina has a wonderful deep voice. However, none of the songs really caught my attention on the first listen. Maybe Jazz isnt my thing. Ive never been the biggest jazz fan. The whole album kind of passed me by. A couple of tracks reminded me of amy winehouse. Quite a similar tone vocally in some aspects. Am i being harsh? Maybe. I recognised lilac wine from a jeff buckley cover straight away. The JB version of lilac wine is awesome, so i knew i had to give it another shot.I'll come back to it tomorrow. I came back for a second listen. Its definitely a grower for me. Nina, what a beautiful voice. Able to carry the entire album on its own practically. Lyrics are rather beautiful in several songs with lilac wine still being my favourite. I would give this album a 3.5 if i could with the view to giving it a 4 as it grows on me. I can see myself coming back to this in the near future and branching out into a few more of her albums. After all thats what the list is for! exploration and opening new doors! Admittedly, this is my first nina album. I had a quick check on her profile and immediately recognised more of her stuff. Wow, i cant wait to branch out into other tracks! Maybe this will break down the wall to the world of Jazz for me... Initial rating 3 2nd listen Rating 3.5
In a way it sounds kind of fresh for being a 60s album, like something that might have inspired Duffy or something. But on the other hand it wasn't really my cup of tea entirely. I think a 3 is suitable, but definitely plus points for sounding different than a typical 60s album!
Beautiful music. Some of it drags on a little too slowly.
This is not really my thing, but it's perfectly fine and by far the best jazz-type (although I would say its a bit of a stretch to call it jazz) album I've had so far. Having said that, this version of Lilac Wine is absolutely amazing. I knewbthe Jeff Buckley and Elkie Brooks versions, but this one is just spectacular - plaintive, and broken and lost, you really feel the pain of loss and ending. Outstanding.
-i thought lilac wine was a jeff buckley original... -having to google if she was a guy or girl... yikes
Strong vocals, but nothing else stands out too much 3.0
Nice voice!
The title track is a revelation
1. your loving uuayz - 1 2. four uuomen - 2 3. uuhat more can i zay - 1 4. lilac uuine - 1 5. all i azk - 1 6. let it all out - 0 7 breaking my heart - 1 8. uuild iz the uuind - 2 9. black - 1.5 10. looze you - 2 11. i loze - 1
Not my favorite Simone album but still good.
Gutes Album aber einfach nicht mein Geschmack. Four women ist natürlich ein sehr starkes Lied
Beautiful for sure but not real stand outs.
A bit dry, but not unpleasant. Didnt really stand out in my mind.
She has a great voice without a shadow of a doubt, but this just isn't for me. Was nice to hear the song Jay-Z sampled for The Story of OJ tho.
Okay, bit too slow and lounge for me
I liked this album and would like to re-listen to it sometime soon. Still, whenever I listen to Nina Simone, I always enjoy it but it never fully clicks with me, and it’s kind of frustrating.
Jazz not my thing
Nice music, but not the sort of thing I'd listen to on my own time.
Ice!
Strong voice but not totally my bag
Some great recordings here, showcasing Nina's distinctive warbly voice and delivery alongside trademark yearning and pain. Nice mix of musical styles, too. The self-penned "Four Women" is a stand-out, as is "Black is the Colour..". Also the source of notable cover versions down the track (including one of my personal favourite David Bowie numbers). Would add half a * if I could.
I enjoy Nina Simone and when this came up I felt good about the day. However 2 runs through and I didn't end up as wildly excited as I expected. The slower stuff didn't seem to suit here voice and I found the album dragged a touch. I really enjoyed some of the jazzier piano stuff and some tracks were of her usual high standard.
this is real soul music. i find it meanders a little, the album starts out great but by the end I'd had my fill. Nina's voice just grates a little after prolonged exposure, BUT the messages within are powerful.
Powerful, emotional performance. First half of the album was very enjoyable. Second half dragged as the songs all got very samey. Also the reveal of the final name in Four Women made me burst out laughing which was probably not her goal when writing that song
Powerful vocals and intensely emotional. Probably too much so for every day listening, but a super intriguing listen for me nonetheless.
i love your lovin' ways four women break down and let it all out either way i lose
A high quality record, very classy & elegant and listenable. It has many qualities of a 4/5 but personally it doesn't strike me with the feels, so I'm settling with a 3.
While I appreciated the artistry and would love to see her live. I didn’t love the album. I am very happy that I listened to it. I’ve heard numerous people find Nina Simone as an inspiration and I totally get that.
Nina's incredible but I don't think this is one of her better records, despite Lilac Wine.
I can’t think of another voice as pure and devastating as Nina Simone’s. I didn’t quite get it when I was younger, but it has resonated with me as I’ve gotten older. Beautiful.
Nice listen. Good album 3.5
This chick can sing wow
Powerful voice
This was fine. No complaints, but nothing Earth shattering.
Easy Jazz introduction- 4 women has strong lyrics. Can see influence.
Beautiful voice
Chill. Calming. Sometimes the recording quality/stereo panning is a bit ehhhh. But got more used to it as it went on.
Very good
I love Nina Simone's voice and her bluesier arrangements. There is some of this on here, but a lot of jazz-influence and other elements that I don't gravitate towards as much with her music. This is very good, but not as consistent as I would like.
lijepo al nis mi nije bilo wow
Nina zna kaj radi al nije tolko moj đir.
Great album. This listen showed me that I should really try to learn or at least follow along with lyrics. But even not knowing the lyrics wasnt a hindrance because Nina is so good at conveying emotion with the tone of her voice.
Her voice is amazing, but outside of a couple highlights I found most of the arrangements to be a little plodding.
5.5/10 Amazing performance, but the songs just aren't that interesting to me. Highlights: Four Women Either Way I lose
A fantastic voice raising a fantastically uneven batch of songs. Starts well with I Love your Lovin Ways: Surprisingly bluesy and straightforward, but works really well with the rasp in her voice. Four Women seems a bit of an oddity out of context, but after reading it’s inspired by her play about black female archetypes, it makes more sense. Feels like a song from a musical trying to introduce the characters in a ham-fisted way, (‘I’m awfully bitter these days, because my parents were slaves’ is a bit on the nose) but the performance is great. To be honest, she could read the phone book with that voice and it would still be great. What More Can I Say is fine, a bit Nina by numbers, but Lilac Wine in fubulous. I always loved the Jeff Buckley version, and it appears he’s lifted his reading almost wholesale from this. It’s such a great song and needs a great voice like hers to do it justice. Perfect tipsy yearning. That’s All I ask: her voice is almost like the trumpet among that brass, the words are pretty incidental. Break Down And Let it All Out: Fairly forgettable song, alchemised by her singing. Shows the huge range of her voice when the next track - Why Keep on Breaking My Heart - comes on, venomous one minute, then smooth the next. It almost sounds like a different person. The latter is not a wonderful song, sounds like Dean Martin should be performing it in a cheesy 50s romcom. Wild Is The Wind: This is more like it. That tinkling piano wrapping itself round her voice. Not many people do the mournful thing better. It seems the more stripped back the arrangement, the better it showcases her. The same thing is true of Black is the Colour. A great singer, but not a great album
Wild What is the Wind Not listened to many of her albums, never know where to start. Obviously for a lot of US singers and bands of the 50s and 60s their albums were a chance for record companies to release whatever they could and make a quick buck, rather than a chance to make an artistic statement. I gather Nina falls into this boat too. Pretty sure anything I could say about her has been said a thousand times before a thousand times more eloquently. Her voice and piano playing are so expressive that they elevate some of the more pedestrian jazz blues songs on here, but the good songs she can take it to a completely different place. Four Women, which I’ve never heard before, is absolutely superb. I love that descending piano and bass motif. Veers into easy listening in places, not necessarily a bad thing, but she’s so incredible it feels a bit of a waste. More of the upbeat RnB of I Love Your Lovin’ Ways and jazzy folk of Black is the Colour of my True Love’s Hair would make for a great album. I get her background is more in the Jazz tradition but I think she’s at her best when she goes a bit beyond that. What More Can I say is good too, didn’t like it much on first listen but it stood out more the second and third time. Lilac Wine (or Lilaaac Wine) is nice too. Tricky one to rate. I’m not a fan of some of the songs, not that they are bad they just don’t speak to me, but it’s Nina Simone so even if the songs are horrendous it has a pretty high base level. And Four Women is just incredible. Ultimately it doesn’t feel like an album, more a collection of songs, so for that reason I’ll stick with a high end 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'll give Wild is the Wind a 6.5/10. The beginning was a bit slow and experimental which tbh I think experimental only sounds good if it's new cause old "experimental" has already been used over and over by other artists. But gotta be honest the last two songs kinda hot pretty well, not good enough to make it on my liked playlist bit good nonetheless. 6.5 being most of the album is pretty middle of the road but the last half bumps it up a bit.
Four women 👌🏻 What more can I say 👍🏻 Lilac wine 😫 Break down and let it all out 👍🏻 Either way I lose 👍🏻 Simplistic but strong vocals that touch my soul and bring joy. Why keep on breaking my heart felt like it removed me from the moment and the album. Not in a good way.
Really had it in my head for some reason that this album was going to be better
Nina’s voice has such a unique timbre that even the romantic songs sound haunting. Also, she’s been sampled on so many big rap songs that she could practically be on a greatest producers of all time list
Nina snapped here. Lilac wine was good and so was four women.
First half carried. Definitely a solid album. Didn’t realize the Story of OJ by Jay Z is a sample of Four Woman until I heard this today.
I appreciate a beautiful voice when I hear one. Not my go to genre but thoroughly enjoyed the album, especially “four women” and “break down and let it all out” 3/5
Top voice, too slow for me
3.5 This came out in the same year England won the World Cup and still sounds this good
Schöne arrangierte JazzStücke. Leider oft zu ruhig und wehleidig klagend.
It was alright
I can see the cultural impact of this album. But sonically I wish there were more tracks that I enjoyed. Powerful lyrics.
As much as I appreciate her style and substance, I'm just not a big fan of her music. I wouldn't turn it off, but I'm not sure how much I'd turn it on either.
First time listening to Nina Simone, somehow!
Sounds real.
I think this is the first of her music that I've listened to. It sounded very soulful and had some beautiful and powerful parts and lyrics.
Not my jam. But good stuff still.
Nina Simone is incredible; massively talented and such a powerful voice. Having said that, I found this particular album to be mid.
Väldigt stark röst och kul att lyssna på något jag vanligtvis inte brukar. Gillar även låttexterna mycket. Min favoritlåt från albumet var Break Down and let it all out! Albumet får 3/5 stjärnor
Mot my favorite thing, but not bad for what it is.
That's just sad man
It was alright. I can't say any particular song is a must listen. It was mainly blues and jazz. She can definitely sing. It was a little long. I will round up.
Good but nit the best nina simone album by a long shot.
Kinda cool to be cultured I guess. The clicking song was cool
- Jay Z sampled the second song it's so interesting finding the original - "I drink much more than I oughta drink" real - Great voice very smooth vibe
- very cool deep voice - some enjoyable songs
Very unique sound. Interesting to listen to, but I struggled to finish.
Nina Simone definitely has something about her... this album is a little slow for me. I liked I love your lovin ways and four women so far. wild is the wind is nice too. But I don't really see myself in the mood to just listen to the whole album in general, so 3.
This album wasn't my cup of tea but there is undeniable talent here so I'm giving this 3 stars.
Not my jam, but pretty good. I respect the craft and her terrific voice
I imagine there's better albums of hers
High 3s almost a 4, really enjoyable listen. Great voice.
The significance of albums such as this should not be understated. However, it didn’t vibe with me personally, thus the score.
Nice, Nina Simone har en virkelig speciel og cool stemme!
Gefällt mir.
Visste ikkje at D-Bo sin Wild is the wind va ein cover
A mixture of Blues, Folk, R&B, and Jazz. Wasn't so keen on the Jazz tracks, but I quite liked the other tracks. The song "Four Women" was controversial at the time because of its anti-racism lyrics. 3/5
Abwechslungsreich und gut zu hören.
I enjoyed “Four Women” and the message it conveyed. Her songs may not have been my style, but I appreciate the meanings behind them nonetheless.
Nice piano music and a few good songs
Not the best album by Nina Simone, but definitely a good showcase of her talents.
I enjoy Nina Simone, but this album wasn't her best work. The high points were high, but there's a couple of tracks which I really wasn't feeling.
Four Women
Lyrically inspired Cocktail songs with social pluck Beautifully bold
Liked It though not as I expected
Not so bad.
For a sec I thought she was a dude.
Background music for me, not my cup of tea and I find the vocals to not be crisp, but it’s a vibe
What a unique voice. Her style and sound were so varied, that I thought she had several different guest artists at first. At times she sounded like Chet Baker and at others like Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane. I was excited to read that she played the piano, as well. Overall an interesting listen, but I probably won't listen again.
Great singer. I did enjoy some of the recommended songs from artists like Etta James that played after more than this album. Nina's voice was super unique but it's never quite hooked me.
Liked it, but left me sort of underwhelmed. The last song showed a more uptempo musical style I like more. 3/5 Might listen again
Great artist
Prestaro
A very operatic album with great vocals and piano. Not really to my taste, but I'm glad I listened to it.
Pas mon genre de musique mais album vraiment cool à écouter.
Appreciate her huge talent and influence.
Reminded me of Benjamin Clementine
Disappointing, I really expected more from this. NS is a great artist but I found this album lacklustre and generally poor
Great voice, great soul… few of the songs just get a little too deep and dark for casual listening
extraordinary.
Not my thing
Heard of the artist, not so much the album. Jazz from 1966. Quite enjoying the first track. Enjoyed the album, relaxed and slow.
Солидно за музику у позадини. 5/10
Nina Simone has such a unique and impressive voice, so she gets automatic points for that. This is a good album, with a couple of iconic singles, which I enjoyed.
I've known Nina Simone from Sinnerman, nice voice. Sweet lounge singer energy.
Slow classy jazz that spotlights vocals and piano, which are both great. Tasteful incorporation of other instruments on some songs. Favorite Track: Either Way I Lose, Lilac Wine
A little slow. Interesting lyrics. Not my thing.
Nina Simone is amazing and a couple of tracks here are moving/chilling but the mix of tracks is not great with some real clunkers.
sounded great but just got a type of music i enjoy listening to. two or three songs really stood out but the rest sort of blended together into one melancholy, lovely song. 2.5, but rounding up to 3 for her lovely voice and vocal style.
I felt like she was singing directly to me. I enjoyed this much more than I was expecting.
I think today was not a great day for me to love this, but it's still good.
J'ai bien aimé. Four women c'était ma préférée.
Some beautiful Nina as always
Enjoyed four women and the last song.
very nice
Too slow for me but her voice was good. Also the piano was soothing.
I listened but I didn’t hear (or I heard it but I didn’t listen, I can never remember which way round it should be). Would probably listen again.
Gravelly. Makes me want to drink bourbon.
I knew har some of her songs but I've never heard this one(but why this)
Not bad, kinda Christmasy and fallout diamond city radio playlist vibes, but what don't get is why they chose specifically this one random album out of all of her extensive discography filled with much bigger hits than this. Still not too bad. It has a nice chill athmosphere, but it didn't blow me away. Good to know about this artist's existence now. 6/10
Only listened to half. Wasn't blown away.
Such a beautiful, emotional, honest voice. Nina Simone is gorgeous blues soul music I could listen to anytime. The song four women is very powerful.
This feels like one of those albums and/or artists I'm supposed to have heard about before now. Very classy sound, and swanky backings make for an easy listen but aside from the fantastic Lilac Wine there wasn't much left for me to really vibe with. Nina Simone's voice was at times very impressive and at other times not for me at all. This is one of those albums that I'll think of for "that one song" but not much else.
Ah ok, ide mi na zivce ona malo
Great listen Sunday eve glass of wine dim lights relax vibe check
Queen
43 Based on this scale: 1 - 0 to 19 2 - 20 to 39 3 - 40 to 59 4 - 60 to 79 5 - 80 to 100 I like jazz, but I'm not a big fan of jazz singers. This album has moments that are jazz, moments that are jazzy and moments that are neither. It's pretty good, but forgettable.
I liked it at first and then it didn't. "Wild is the Wind" in particular I REALLY didn't like, which is pretty ironic given that it's also one of my favourite songs in some other version. But it's fine, there wouldn't be a cover without the original, so thank you Nina Simone.
Not my style
Quite an album. Cant really say much cause I don't know much about the genre but I enjoyed llistening to it.
I enjoyed this album, despite some of the tracks not doing much for me. It seemed like each of the songs were either relatively uninteresting, or some of the best music I have ever heard. 'Thats all I can ask' for example I thought was absolutely brilliant, really magical music, whereas 'why keep on breaking my heart' for example was, (whilst being objectively/musically very similar) Just not the same. Top Three 1. Thats all I ask 2. Wild is the wind 3 Either way I lose. Least favorite I love your lovin ways.
this was a pleasant listen though honestly not something i'd really seek out myself or listen to often. nina's deep and soulful voice is a highlight of the album and really sets her apart from the pack. favorites: four women, lilac wine, wild is the wind
Love nina, but her voice is whiny. Beaytiful, but with a weird nasaly vibrato
Lacrimose, boring, too much tremulo, and nothing stood out. Bad coffee house music.
Little slow for me
Eh… not my favorite… didn’t hate it
Not really my thing, but good nonetheless
not really feeling anything strong and its a little boring but theres some good parts
Her voice is incredibly powerful. I definitely prefer the songs that just include her and her piano. I think some of the orchestral instrumentation was a bit much and took away from her voice.
This album begins incredibly. The first 3 tracks are exactly what I wanted. Incredible enthusiasm, hard hitting lyrics and wistful soul. However the start of this album doesn't carry through the whole record. I enjoyed the track lilac wine but the whole middle and back of the album was not varied enough. A good soul album but not my favourite.
First song was great. The rest were a little too much.
Nina Simone is great! While I did particularly enjoy a few tracks on this album, it didn't blow me away. Still a good listen though.
Aw heck no
Did I hear some crooning vibrato vocal runs? Damn Post Malone kinda stole her flow. Very heartfelt very personal very nice
Aw heck yeah
Sounds good, but you have to be in the right mood to enjoy.
The voice is amazing, but not the presence and nerve that Nina have on some other albums. The whole album felt a bit flat.
Like the way the vocals are recorded. The first few tracks were good, don't like break down much though. Black is the colour... is pretty good
Good album now
Nice beautiful soulful music but too sombre for my taste
Good, but not one of Nina's best for me
Short and sweet
Very cool album, there are definitely some tracks on here I’d go back to. Hearing Alabama Shakes before Nina definitely skewed my opinion because i can’t not hear Brittany when I listen to Ms. Simone.
Rating - 6.3/10 Album Ranking: 1. I Love Your Lovin’ Ways - 8 2. Break Down And Let It All Out - 7 3. Either Way I Lose - 7 4. What More Can I Say? - 7 5. Four Women - 7 6. Wild Is The Wind - 6 7. Why Keep On Breaking My Heart - 6 8. Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair - 6 Skips: 9. Lilac Wine - 5 10. That’s All I Ask - 5 11. If I Should Lose You - 5
Have to be in the right mood to listen to it. She's a talent no question about that. Although I find her warbling to be a bit much. Four Women is devastatingly great.
Liked it way more than I thought I would but ultimately not my cup of tea
Nice touch tbf
Beautiful voice, songs feel very 'samey'.
Some songs were good. Other ones not so much
Nina Simone is legendary and I do really love a couple of her other albums. I hadn’t listened to this particular album in its entirety before, and it felt a little underwhelming for me. She’s an incredible vocalist, but I was feeling bored through chunks of this.
Fett mysigt album men tyvärr lite repetitivt. Hon låter ju gudomligt men man vill ha lite förändring ju. Favoriter: Lilac Wine, Either way I lose
While the music is very powerful at points and has a lot of soul, I also think the music can be kind of minimalistic and not very engaging at moments. I think it’s a decent record but it’s not much of my thing I’ll leave it at that 6/10
ta cool
What a voice, so soulful, and her piano accompaniment make for a very moving album. Very deep lyrics that I should have listened more closely to...
I wanted to like this more but I did still enjoy it
One of those albums which I respect but not my personal jam. Rating 3.0
Really unique, beautiful songs. Her voice reflects the hardships and turmoil experienced throughout her life. It’s a bit raw, raspy, and slightly chaotic.
Track 2 (Four Women) is sampled by JayZ in Story of OJ which was an enjoyable listen. Overall a good listen but nothing that stuck out too much otherwise. 3.8/5
Great late night album.
It was nice to Loren to something different.
4/11, 36%
Beautiful voice! Some good songs! 3/5
Sorry just not enough for me. Her voice is amazing, a gift, an instrument all in itself. These are great songs to mellow out a Playlist but as an album it's a bit grating. 3 min never seemed so long.
A good vocal, but recording leaves a bit to be desired.
One of those albums on the list that is difficult for me to place. I’m some ways stunning, in some ways transient. I don’t think I’d listen to it often and yet I can recognise how remarkable Simone was.
I had hoped to be far more unto this than I was. I think Nina Simone was a very important artist but I didn't find this particularly listenable
Avrei pensato avesse una voce più intrigante
Me gustó. En ningún momento sentí que estaba escuchando un álbum que tiene mas de 50 años. Álbum atemporal.
Great voice and smooth sound. Good album, but get's a bit boring after a while.
I expected to love it but didn’t really.
Down and Let it All Out". Als daar een beetje stevige gitaar onder zat, was dat gewoon een rock-classic geweest.
I'm not a fan. When she's good, it's bone-chilling. Sometimes, her voice just scares me.
Great voice, no real highs or lows for me, not really my thing
Good, but not my favorite Nina Simone album.
Beautiful piano and vocals, but something about this didn't hold my attention as much as I expected it to. Still, can't deny Simone's talent.
I can understand why it is on the list, but its not really my digs.
Decent
Not really my thing, but she has a beautiful voice. I appreciated the blatant political activism in her lyrics.
Damn, what a voice.
great arrangements and she’s a mighty talent but it’s all such a histrionic drag
I've heard of this artist before, but don't think I have ever heard one of her songs. I can tell just by looking at her Spotify page that this isn't her most well-received album so it is an odd choice. The second track is used as a sample in "The Story of OJ" by Jay-Z so I am already familiar with it/like it. This seems like it is a soul/blues album and while I don't typically listen to that genre it is pretty good. This is pretty chill music that I could listen to in the background. There are only a few distinct songs that I really like, but overall this is still pretty enjoyable. Nina's voice has a particular timbre that is enjoyable to hear, and adds a somber quality to her songs; especially her slower songs. I can tell there is probably a lot of subtext in her lyrics that I don't quite get because I don't know the full background, and there are probably old-timey sayings/slang used that I don't understand. A solid 3/5
Good, but oh so slow and moody. Not really my thing, feels completely devoid of any fun
Nina Simone is of course an absolute legend, and has a brilliant voice. The musicianship on this album is also top-notch with some lovely jazz piano. I probably wouldn't listen again but it was pleasant enough and I can appreciate the genius present.
Really enjoyed this, a great intro to Nina. Looking forward to more
Nina’s voice is pretty great even if this isn’t my usual go to style of music
Great album, with of course the production showing its age, Simone's vocals tell a powerful story. Wild is the wind is a personal favorite of mine. Personally not all the tracks were for me, but it still invoked strong emotion nonetheless.
What a contrast from the Pixies and I have to say, I was surprised and impressed. Absolutely loved I love your loving way and immediately downloaded to my library. Thought this was going to a fun, upbeat Little Richard sounding album then........went deep, soulful and strong. Her voice is very unique and enjoyed very much. I can't say this this is my type of music or maybe I just haven't given it the proper due. I listened at work and it immediately caught my attention. I spent another hour listening to some of her other music. She is very good! I laid in bed and listened with my headphones and had visions of seeing her in some small, smoke filled nightclub on a romantic night out with the wife. I can only imagine what the real experience would be like and hope someday to enjoy that type of experience. I can't say all her stuff blew me away, but all in all, I liked this. Maybe the change of pace, maybe just different than my usual type of listening, but goo stuff. I think Mindy would enjoy this. I'm giving this a solid 3. I can see this being played at our home on some of our laid back, music nights. I think if your open your mind and let this flow through you, it would be enjoyable to all those who listen. I am very happy I have been introduced to her music! I love the way you love me and What more can I say were my 2 standouts, but really enjoyed a good portion of all the album. Good writeup with a lot of credit given. Maybe I underrated?? A very solid 3 for me. Thanks for the introduction. 3
This was a nice change of pace for me but honestly it was kind of boring. Jazz with vocals isn't my favorite but I do think Nina Simone pulls it off really well here. There are nice tender moments broken up by these grandiose finales with amazing crescendos but all of it failed to leave a huge impression. I think I liked it. I think? 3.5
3.5 Beautiful and profound. Having not listened to much Nina Simone, I quite enjoyed this, with her distinctive voice being the highlight for me. I wasn’t immediately sold upon hearing the opening track I Love Your Lovin’ Ways, finding it a pretty generic slice of the era, but Four Women won me over with its smooth oldies jazz sound and social message regarding depictions of black women. As the album went on, Nina’s charm continued to slowly unfold as her range in both performance and songwriting ability grew and grew. It’s no wonder this album inspired artists from a variety of genres even years after its release. I listened to David Bowie’s and Jeff Buckley’s respective covers of Wild is the Wind and Lilac Wine after this and was really impressed with how they were able to capture Simone’s spirit while still containing elements of their own iconic artistry. Of course, they were in good hands to begin with choosing songs from here. It didn’t blow my mind, and to be honest I don’t see myself listening to this often, but there’s definitely a vibe I appreciated and would likely come back to in the right time and place (I think my mom would like this too). If I ever decide to host a fancy cocktail party, this would be high on my list to play.
I really love the drama in these songs. "Four Women" is wild. "What More Can I Say?" has such an incredible buildup. There are a few on this that I don't really love. "Break Down and Let It All Out" really misses the mark for me. The vocal vibrato is so incredibly tight and rhythmic in a weird way. The song itself isn't strong, and I don't love the super quick fade out at the end too. "Wild Is The Wind" wasn't my favorite either. Now that I'm listening I'm realizing that I liked the first half of the album much more than the second, save for the track "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair", a beautiful modal ballad that is a highlight of the second half. Nina Simone is a force but this one isn't one of my favorites. Even with that being said it is a very enjoyable listen. Lovely album cover.
Makes me think of a female crooner, felt like I should be lounging in a Casablanca style club
Powerful blues vocals. A force. Loved a couple of these songs but there were a few weird ones too. Definitely worth the listen.
Wasn't mad about it but then had it on when I was cooking and it was very nice.
Nina Simonella on kyllä jännä ääni, siinä mielessä lumoava, saa kuuntelemaan. Painavia biisejä, mutta en kahden kerrankaan jälkeen ole myyty
Nina sings with a very airy, vibrato effect. Her voice is raspy, and delightful to listen to. Her songs are centered around romance and elicit some feelings of longing and affection. The music is simple and stripped back, with accompanying keys, horns, and soft drums brushing. It starts off with some tempo, but ultimately resolves to softer and less ensembles tracks that feature her unique singing style. The audio specifically is lower fidelity, but not enough to distract from the passion of the music. No songs in particular stood out to me, but if I had to name a few that I enjoyed more than the others: I love your lovin ways, Lilac Wine, Break down and let it all out.
- Voice isn't really my style - Prod on point
Starts off pretty slow, made the puppy fall asleep so that's good. I liked it more by the end. Doesn't really sound like an album made in the 60s to me
This isn’t really my taste in music but there’s a lot to appreciate here. Every song was heartfully sung. “Four Women” is a masterpiece.
Didn't enjoy all of it but there was some very nice stuff there
I know i’m meant to love her but she’s not that crazy impressive to me - plus i hate the way she pronounces lilac
Four Women is great in it’s visceral, moving, uncomfortable way. Even if Jay-Z hadn’t sampled it I believe it’d still move me. The way her voice vibrates on Break Down and Let It All Out reminds me of Jefferson Airplane. Outside of that, she’s more than serviceable covering songs about love and heartbreak, but she’s not as soulful or emotionally convincing in that realm beside say, Aretha Franklin or Al Green.
Ganska soft och skön.
I love this woman but this ain't my favourite album of hers at all. Black is the colour was a surprise though. I thought it was Irish until now.
it’s like rat pack vibes but black woman, more interesting. It could grow on me and there are a few that are sticking
I enjoyed.
I'd rate it 3.5 but won't let me, was pretty good for a first album on the list, cute slow songs etc
Very slow, mostly sad songs about love. Probably beautiful at the time but a little harsh sounding in some parts these days.
почему в западном творчестве столько ремейков? не в восторге от Нины, не близок ни вокал, ни художественная подача. она норм
me gustó bastante 7.5/10
I like Nina Simone. Not crazy about this album.
Overall quite a beautiful sounding album. The album switches between Jazzy songs to Folk tunes, I preferred the former. I found "Four Women" to be an especially powerful song. Highlights were "Either Way I Lose", "Break Down And Let It All Out" and "I Love Your Lovin' Ways".
Incredible opening song and great voice. Not hugely my cup of tea though. Another album that starts up here and ends up in a kinda bleak place. Still alright.
Listened Before? N An interesting listen. Very political for jazz. Liking the themes and edge, especially for the time period. I've never actually heard of her, so that's kind of bad on me. I doubt I'll revisit this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Wild is the Wind
Strongest when softest. In the long run the dishes served lack of variety in the recipe. But still touching in a decent way. 2.6
What a voice. Truly a fun listen. Enjoyed it.
I've listen some compilations but I don't think I ever listen to entire one of her albums. No denying her talents as a singer but this album is just ok, a few tracks I like but many are forgettable.
I really like the more “traditional” jazz and bluesy numbers on this record, but while I can appreciate the other tracks, they’re aren’t something I’d listen to more than once.
Not an album of bangers/big songs she's famous for, so a really interesting listen.
Vh
Not bad, bluesy, nice female voice Opening track the nicest
First few tracks I really enjoyed, but it sorta slipped from my attention after that even though I listened to the album a few times. Perfectly cromulent.
Chill AF. Too chill for me. I can't appreciate the soothing vocals or whatever. I'm more of a rock n roll oh yeah yeah kinda guy. Debating whether this album is a 3 or a 4 or even a 2. I'm probably gonna settle on a two. My two faves were definitley "Why Keep On Breaking My Heart" and "I Love your Lovin' Ways" Check those out if you're into more upbeat stuff. Those two songs are what saved this album from my dastardly 2 star rating. NEVER FORGET HOW TO LOVE!
Sad
Very good, filled with soul
Nina Simone is one of the best vocalists of all time. I've never heard any of the songs on this album previously, but they are all in her classic style. They're bluesy and jazzy, they tell of her struggles in life. Overall it was pretty good
A lot to like about this one. One of music's most distinctive and expressive voices, and interesting arrangements of some good songs. A few more originals would've been nice though; the one song she wrote herself is a good'un. 3.5
Nina has a great voice. She can really belt it out but she stays pretty controlled on this record. There are times where she goes off. I didnt like some of the music on here but the singing was always on point. Either way i lose was a good ending track. Solid album 5/10
Not into this
Enjoyable.
It grew on me more as I listened. Lilac Wine and Wild is the Wind are outstanding songs (though I confess to preferring the cover versions more, simply because I heard those first). I don't think this is Nina Simone's best, and I've heard more moving songs from her.
I felt cool
enjoyed it.
Enjoyed! Didn’t need a whole album
I really liked this. Might be a time and place thing, but her piano play and emotion in her voice really stuck out to me. I would put it at like 3.4, 3.5, so I'll say 3/5
Not my thing
This is the kind of thing this list is for, I think. I never would have listened to something like this on my own volition. This is almost so moody I can't relate to it. Some of the songs like 'That's All I Ask' really punch when they crescendo but the spaces in between can be plodding. I don't think this will necessarily end up on any playlists but I liked some moments in this a lot. I think it's just a little slow and threadbare musically for my tastes. Her voice is lovely and truly unique. Favorite song: Lilac Wine 3/5
It's Nina Simone, she is a legend. I will have to give it another listen. I like it but I think it needs to grow on my a bit more.
The way of singing is a bit too much for me, but in general this is a nice Nina Simone album. - prefer the David Bowie version of Wild Is The Wind. - either Way I Lose is a great song.
Lovely
One of the best vocal performances of all time, just wish there were more big hits like "Four Women" and "Lilac Wine" because the slower songs weren't really my jam. Strong 3/5.
New the name, but never heard her sing. Good stuff.
Halfway gets good, instrumentals are much better but still a really average album
Good album very soulful and had a lot of good songs on it but I didn’t find it to be particularly special
Tja Nina, is fantastisch. Toch is dit album al luisterend zo aan mij voorbij gegaan. Punten dus voor Nina en niet zozeer voor het album.
Dit vond ik boven verwachting goed!
Mooi hoor.
Close but no cigar
