Not for me.
um
Was expecting a nice listen after the first song, but then it slowed down considerably, and I couldn't connect with most of the songs. Quite relaxing to listen to, but neither the genre nor her voice is for me, alas.
The album namesake didn’t move my needle, super moody record
A few ok songs. Not best of Nina.
Przyjemne, spokojne piosenki, moją ulubioną jest "Four Women". Reszta się dla mnie nie wyróżnia. 2,5/5
2/5
I quite like a bit of Nina Simone. This was fine. Didn’t find it revolutionary or extra special though.
I know Nina Simone by name but didn't recognise anything here. I kinda liked it but I am certain this is something that needs more listens.
Not for me
Didn't do much for me.
I love Nina's voice, but not the biggest fan of this album. Highlights: "Lilac Wine"
As much as I love Mississippi Goddam I disliked this album in its entirety.
Powerful voice but content is overall is not as powerful
Ok, bo mostly boring. Not my type of soul.
not quite my favorite
Nina’s voice is deep and smooth and she sings a love songs with minimal but great instrumentation. I didn’t really connect with it, but I can tell why this album is important to people. 2.0/5.0
Either way I loose geil Sehe auch Szenarien in denen ich das wieder hören würde, aber Nina hat mich gerade wo, wo ich nicht Geduld hatte für manche Songs 4/10
Was recommended the album Grace from Jeff Buckley yesterday, the one song I saved in my playlist was Lilac Wine. Was pleasantly surprised to hear that exact song in this album.
Eh it's ok. I think I'm having an off week because nothing has resonated with me so far. I know Nina Simone is a legend, but nothing is coming out at me from this album.
It had a few good songs but her voice was a little annoying.
its not really my vibe, although there's something i like in every song and i think its just the music and the instruments used but the singing rhythm isn't really something i like so i wont be adding any songs to my playlist but i appreciate it because its not BAD music. OH and one thing i wanna add is that it reminds me so much of the princess and the frog idk it gives off those vibes a lot i think.
Feels like too big of a generational gap again. I guess I can appreciate the cultural significance but nothing I would put on. Nothing really lands with me
I can appreciate the artistry but this is not for me.
I can appreciate the music, and I can think of times and places where I would put this on; it's a vibe. But it's not really "my thing" generally. More like, I enjoyed the upbeat songs because of the mood I was in, especially I love your lovin' ways, and then the change of pace of other songs turned me off.
2/5
not really my taste but there were a few songs i liked
It’s not bad for the sixties, but I wouldn’t consume it in my free time.
2 out of 5 This was hard for me to rate a 2. I understand she is a legend but this music is not for me. I really tried. Man her voice is DEEP.
carino, però non mi va molto di ascoltare sto genere al momento. molto anni '60. musica lenta dolce e triste, in genere d'amore. poi tutto il rispetto per l'autrice, mi ha solo colto nel momento sbagliato
92/1001 First listen. I listened to this all day and it was enjoyable but this, like so many other albums on this list, I just don’t know when else I would really play it. This is a great reason to participate in this project. I’m probably not going to listen to it again but hey, now I’ve finally listened to it. Also, Jeff Buckley (64/1001) was really into Simone and now I can really hear the influence. 4/10
like Nina Simone in general but didn’t love this album
This album started with a banger but turned to slow and jazzy for the remainder of the record. Not into much jazz. Sound was excellent, very melodic, just not my taste.
Im not really fw it. Why she calling this man daddy in What More Can I Say? I like Jeff Buckley's Lilac Wine better, but this one isnt bad
Not for me
It was okay. Some of the songs sound like Hugh Jackman sang them…
Genre: Old School Jazz Rating: 3/10. Honestly I’m just not really a fan of her vocal tone style most of the time, instrumentals were beautiful though. 3 songs added to the playlist. Favourite Song: What More Can I Say?
Not for me
Got a bit painful to finish listening to that voice
She is very good in the genre…I just don’t love the genre!!
not my type of genre but the end of what more can i say HIT ME
Refreshing, too jazzy for me
Liked Why Keep Breaking My Heart, not really my taste but interesting
Beautiful but not my jam.
Sure her voice is great but just not my sort of music
I recognize and appreciate the influence, but don't particularly care for the album
Very dreary.
I get it, it's just not for me
Wanted to love it but just couldn't get into the talky type singing. She does have a beautiful, powerful voice but I didn't like this style.
The skill of the singer and the music i not in doubt, but it was just to "jaz" for me.
3/10
Hmmmmm. Hrrrrrmmmmm. Nina Simone is a vaguely familiar name, though I've never heard of this album before. I've no clue what to expect from this cover, either. It's common for jazz albums to have a face on the cover and a minimal, bold colour palette, so I'm hedging my bets on that. It's also common for jazz albums to have a bunch of needless branding and tat on the cover, so I think I've got a winning prediction on my hands. Jazz, fuck yeah. Finally, a victory on my hands. Anyways, this is fine. Just a perfectly okay jazz album with vocals. Simone is an interesting vocalist. Her style of singing is quite distinctive, though I don't think it's well-matched with the music. Admittedly, she also kind of sounds like a man at a few points. The instrumentals are delicate and intimate, which I appreciate. They fade into the background a little, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that. "What More Can I Say?" is nice. I like a subdued piano number. Simone's vocals aren't all that bad on this one, either. "Wild is the Wind" has a nice, relaxing sound. Nothing on the rest of the album really sticks out to me, truth be told. Book time. A whole lotta nothin in there. Wikipedia says that this album had a very moderate critical response, though that's also about it. Hmm. Nina's a prolific artist, though it doesn't seem like she has an album where she truly crushes it (something which is also mentioned in the book). I guess I can let this album slide for the fact that I think Simone is worthy of immortalisation as an artist and I only have a few albums to replace the duds with, but I'd probably snub this one under better circumstances. I begrudgingly cosign this inclusion.
2.5 - Meh
Best Track - "I Love Your Lovin' Ways"
Early EMO! Hate the voice. Very depressing.
Nina is great, but I don't have much desire to seek out her music. Enjoyable when im listening to it, but I don't think much about her otherwise.
General takeaway: So, having just gotten done with Dusty Springfield's two albums, I'm starting to think that maybe women in the 60s weren't often performing their own/original material? Even though I'm not a huge fan of the "American Idol" feel of that, I'll try to be less judgy on this point going forward. Album-specific takeaway: Before today, the only song I'd ever heard by Nina Simone was 'My Baby Just Cares for Me' from the "Peter's Friends" soundtrack (a very good album, by the way, which, incidentally, is more "must hear" than most of the albums on this list - but I digress). None of the songs on this album feel as polished at that song - which I guess makes sense if this album is just a collection of leftovers. This, once again, has me completely questioning the author's decision to include this album over what are, no doubt, much stronger options from a fairly legendary artist's library. Yet another missed opportunity to hear some actual "must hear" material.
First track was not bad but the album got progressively less enjoyable after that. Sounds like the house band in the cocktail lounge at the Holiday Inn Hoboken circa 1960.
Sigh, I really wanted to like this because her voice is so AMAZING--nice and low with a big chunky vibrato. But the tunes were mostly so dull. Lots of those piano parts that sound like they were written by harpists, and lots of those percussion parts where they just go WISKY WISKY WISKY with the brushes the whole time. SNOOZE.
I fully appreciate that Nina Simone is a legend and for good reason but this album gives me the heeby-jeebies and not the fun kind.
Not my style
I respect the artist, but also the majority of the album is a bit too slow and minimal for my personal taste.
i don't love jazz. Nice blues songs
Nina Simone is fantastic. This isn't her best work. There are of course standout tracks, "Four Women" and "Lilac Wine" are timeless, "Either way I lose" clever and balanced. The rest feels patchwork, uneven. Simone seems to use the tracks as vehicles to show her vocal control and timbral range, often to the detriment of the songs them selves. The arrangements behind her are serviceable but uninspired. Don't let this album put you off Nina Simone. She is better than this, and those two or three tracks that do hit should give you a taste if you want to dig deeper.
Maso
63/100 drags on a bit, occasionally boring but pretty good at times
First album I’ve listened to of hers. Did not like it. Is her other work better? Don’t get at all why this is must listen to. Is it because she is boldly singing about African American themes during civil rights era?
Being in the room submerged in the music would have a whole different impact than listening to this album at the airport. It’s falling a bit flat.
Artiste inconnue. Blues/Jazz très standard, trop basé sur le chant (je n'apprécie pas sa voix). Les instruments sont peu mis en avant, pas de chorus pour agrémenter l'ensemble, donc pas de seconde écoute pour moi. =>2/5
Very old timey, listen once and call it a day.
le tendria que dar otra escucha, cosas que me gustaron y cosas que no, eso si tremenda voz
Some very repetitive songs, writing is pretty mid.
lovely voice, but the pace is too slow for me.
An interesting album. I wouldn't say it is for me but it is not bad. 5.1/10
ovo je načelno dobro, ali glas mi nikako ne leži, na kraju me nažalost ostavilo ravnodušnim
Pereza
Too slow for me
Not my thing at all. Thought it was a dude until he said "My hips invite you"
forgettable
This might be an unpopular decision but this album got pretty grating as it went on. Something about her vocals just made me agitated. I think Nina has a lot of talent but it's just not for me. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
Good, but I’ll probably not listen again. Just didn’t capture me
Thought I would like this a lot more than I did. Most of the songs seemed slow.
Whilst I can appreciate Nina Simone’s talent, unfortunately I don’t like her voice - and this album has her at her warbly “best”.
Genuinely embarrassed that the only song I recognised off this record was "Four Women", and only because Jay-Z (a rapper I do not like, see previous review) sampled it in 4:44. Anyways, I genuinely didn't gel with Nina's voice as much I was hoping. I think I got ahead of myself by reading global and my group reviews, which raved about this thing; so I went in with extremely high expectations. Honestly, I really didn't enjoy this one. I know how talented Nina is - and I like her other stuff. But the weird male-sounding female voice really threw me off for a lot of the songs here. Wild is the Wind is really the song that turned me off this piece. I didn't enjoy it at all. This thing had some okay songs, but for the most part I really don't think this record was for me. I'm sorry Nina, you definitely don't deserve this - but I just didn't gel with any of the songs on here.
So everyone at work probably thinks I’m going through a break up or something after hearing me listen to this. A lot of bummer songs on here, and I didn’t really care for her voice at times.
Not my favorite Nina Simone album.
The lyrics to Four Women are incredible. Nina is an extremely talented singer but the album isn't really my vibe. I think the beat is too slow and it feels too emotional for me.
The community here really loves this album. What am I missing, David Bowie???
Not terrible for a slow jazz album, but I didn’t love Nina’s voice (especially because of the reverb so common in the 60s) and there was way too much vibrato.
objectively this album is absolutely beautiful. i just wish it was more for me. it’s lyricism is astounding. the only song i really enjoyed was the opener. the record overall just had too much repetition and the vibrato in her voice started to irk me near the end of the albums run time. again this is absolutely very good it just couldn’t be less for me
Njae, alltså det mest intressanta är väl variationen mellan var albumet börjar o slutar och bra sångröst men fastnar inte för materialet tyvärr.
# 494 ; Wild Is The Wind : 03/06/2025 They've done a pretty decent job, Ok overall, but nothing exceptional. I Love Your Lovin' Ways was the best IMO # 212 in Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of all time (2020)
Kinda of boring. Decent voice but I think she has better stuff
HERESY ALERT! I would like this album quite a bit better without the vocals. I get that she sings of important subjects. Fine. But her lyrics are neither poetic nor narrative, just literal and expository. Being earnest isn’t enough. I can ignore lyrics, and usually do. The main problem is that voice. A lot of ladies with gorgeous voices were singing important songs at this moment. (Abbey Lincoln comes to mind.) Nina's voice is such a mess; she sounds like a Muppet. She’s really pitchy and it doesn’t sound musical to me. Her phrasing is affected and distracting. Her “vibrato” is tremorous; I can’t stop thinking that she has palsy. And, like Barry Gibb (or Kermit the Frog) she never incorporates any chest into her voice - it goes from thin/reedy to brassy, but it's always pinched.
Wanted to like it. Music is great. Not big on the vocals. Too much tremolo, trying too hard with the voice.
It's not my thing, but wow is Four Women a powerful song. I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. My feelings for it were pretty mid, but I can definitely understand why it's included, and why Nina Simone is so beloved.
Legendary Singer. Obviuosly. But average album, and dated
langweilig 2
Just OK.
Wild Is the Wind is a compilation of songs pulled from various recording sessions, and that patchwork nature is evident. The album lacks a clear sense of cohesion or structure, which makes the listening experience feel somewhat disjointed. The first two tracks start strong—bold, powerful, and emotionally charged. They set a high bar and establish a compelling tone. However, the momentum shifts quickly into slower, more introspective piano ballads. Simone’s rendition of “Wild Is the Wind” is beautiful in its own right, though I personally find David Bowie’s later cover more impactful. I listened to the album multiple times in one day, which suggests it certainly has merit. There are standout moments, but overall, the pace slows too often, veering into a territory that felt dreary to me. Favourite tracks: “I Love Your Lovin’ Ways” and “Four Women” are absolute highlights—both are fierce, loud, and captivating. A fantastic way to open an album. Least favourite track: “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” didn’t work for me. It felt overly slow, meandering, and ultimately unengaging. Album artwork: A cool, striking cover that adds to the album's mystique.
“what more can i say” was the first one i really liked, which is strange because i usually mess with jazz more than i did with this album. mid overall at best. 2/5.
I love Nina Simone when she’s good, but her catalogue is super uneven. The repertoire and arrangements are not always well considered. I had never heard this album and I must say I was not missing out.
The song “Four Women” blew me away. Nina Simone had a great voice. It is really just too bad that she wasted her talent on this album singing crappy love songs. I would have loved to hear more songs like “Four Women”.
Not for me.
Emotionally heavy. Beautiful in the same way some funerals are beautiful. Definitely not easy listening, touches difficult issues. Too heavy for me.
No niestety, barwa głodu Niny czyni dla mnie tę płytę niesłuchalną, mimo że to kawał dobrej muzyki. Po prostu nie znoszę jej głosu!
Not my cup of oak milk latte with a dash of caramel and gratings of cinnamon.
4/10 - not a gym album and also not a great album in general. The second song was also kind of weird to listen to
I dont care for her voice tbh. I first thought the singer was a man. Can image this playing in like a old ballroom. Its soul yes but still not resonating with me too much.
I found most of this album somewhat difficult to listen to. I kept checking how much time was left on it. It just isn't my style and those vocals are unbearable. There are some fine moments but overall, ugh. The instrumentals are pretty great tho, so I will round up to a 2. Actual rating....1.5. Liked Songs: "I Love Your Lovin' Ways" , "Why Keep On Breaking My Heart" , "Either Way I Lose"
This rating indicates my enjoyment, not her talent. I was not super enthused when it popped up, but this seems like a great time to revisit someone lots of people love! Despite listening with as open ears as I could manage, her voice remains not for me. I recognise her talent, but I had to force myself to finish the album.
Exemplifies Simone’s power to turn any song into something deeply personal and profound. Not really my style, but i respect it.
Nice and mellow. Not my jam.
4/10
Very nice, just not in the mood for this today.
Whitney doesn’t like. Bluesy.
Love Nina but I wasn’t a huge fan of this album. Felt a bit drab towards the end.
I thought I would like this more but it really never got going for me.
44/1001 - Weird sounding upright piano. I recognize that it's objectively good/well sung (the production and recording is pretty awful though, lots of weird compression and clipping artifacts) but I didn't like it very much.
Honestly if it wasn't her singing I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Her voice just isn't for me
This felt like the type of music I'd hear in the background of a fancy restaurant. Not *the* music, but the *type* of music. Just... off somehow, like it was trying to be original poorly while trying to emulate established music (not bad-ly). Also overall I thought it was kinda boring.
Already forgot the album
A bit enjoyed the music, sometimes the singer sang in an unpleasant way. Not of my taste.
Too slow for me, prefer her I Put A Spell On You album
Not for me
Honestly was a bit dissapointed, but this was ok as a whole. 2.5/5
I cant decide if I like Nina or not. This album got on my nerves by the end and I had to resist skipping songs. Based on that I am giving it a 2-star today.
Albumi #107, 12.11.2024 Blues-/soul-/jazzlaulajattaren kuudes albumi ilmestyi vuonna 1966. Albumin kappaleita on coveroinut mm David Bowie (Wild is the Wind) sekä Jeff Buckley (Lilac Wine).
I've never been a fan of her voice. Boring album.
This is definitely for someone it’s just not for me. When I give something a 2 it means it has merit for someone but to me this was mostly a slog and again not for me. Her voice is hit or miss with my ears. The vibrato is a bit much.
First time listening to Nina Simone in any capacity. Strange that an album full of outtakes and leftovers is considered not only some of her best work, but one of the essential albums in music history. Needless to say, it is a pretty diverse record. While the piano chops standout, the songs are nothing to write home about, maybe save for the opening and closing tracks. For all the hype “Four Women” gets, the song is not even the strongest on this album. Side two gets particularly dreadful. I give her props for pronouncing “Lilac” the correct way.
Hyvää laulantaa, mutta ei tee mieli kuunnella toistamiseen. Ei minua varten.
Pure voice over a bit of jazz piano is always good. The album gets verrrrrrryyy slow down the end. I remember my parents listening to Nina Simone through the early 70s, this album doesn’t hold up to time, comes in at (2.4*s) for me.
Some good songs
Was Ok
Okay- it was fine, easy listening, but I don’t know that it made me feel anything. None of the tracks grabbed my attention and it took me a minute to release it was over- meaning I had turned it out.
boring
Not for me
Nice vocals and nice singing, I can appreciate the artist’s talent. Just a bit slow for me.
Powerful and meaningful and all around great excellent. But ultimately wasn’t my jam.
Not my cup of tea at all
It's a delightful voice to listen to, and I'm glad for the challenge to have been educated and experienced it. But boy, did this one drag on. I really liked the upbeat bluesy rock'n'roll of I Love Your Lovin' Ways but the rest of the album slowed down to an almost pedestrian tempo and I found it far too slow and sad.
Solid. Didn’t listen as actively as I could have. Liked it!
I'm not totally sure what to say about this. It's totally not my style, and I really didn't enjoy it. It's just so archaic and so different from what I'm looking for. I think she's supposed to be an ace singer, but to my ear she's just OK - she's got a very smooth voice, but doesn't show a ton of range or emotion. I think that's just her style. I think this CD probably does a fine job of doing what it set out to do.
Ist mir etwas zu bluesig.
Impressive and unusual voice but this was a bit depressing, not my fave.
I appreciate it this album for its significance. I am very glad that I listen to it. However, although Nina Simone is incredible. I have heard other material of hers that I liked more. This album was actually intentionally created to be a sampling of her different styles and strengths and unfortunately for me it made the record a bit jumbled and disjointed.
Style was good. Her voice wasn’t easy on the ears though.
A little slow for me. Lilac wine was the song I liked the most
So so
Not my type of music but it was okk
Okay but not my thing
This is an extremely strong 2. I loved it. But can't give it a 3 based on other 3s.
That’s one husky broad
omg why are there SOOOO many of those 60s jazz albums. she obviously can sing but dude i had enough jazz on this list.
The singing is skillful, but I don't like the songs. I found this boring to listen to.
Uuhh. Lightened up, Nina
Canta muy bien la negra y el piano de fondo destaca mucho, pero me aburre bastante.
Kinda disappointed, love her voice but this album fell flat. Can tell it was made from scraps! Liked the first song the best then 🫠
I like some Nina Simone songs, but this album wasn't it The first song was very good, but slowly went downhill. They got boring and all sounded the same. Not memorable in the slightest. I didn't like her voice at all on the slower songs It's a shame because I was looking forward to this one 2 ⭐️
Annoying sappy Jazz.
I’ve heard the name so much with so much reverence that I was excited to get this! Turns out, I don’t get it. The music is pretty boilerplate and her voice is nothing special.
couldnt get past the vocals, simply not for me and from what i looked up this wasnt her best album NNN
Great voice but this style of music is not for me. 2 stars D+.
Que sí, que cantas muy bien.
A mixture of some very forgettable songs and some very powerfuls songs. 2.4999 stars rounded down to 2.
Jazzy melancholic ballads. Not my favourite, really requires a certain mood.
What a musical contrast to yesterdays Slipknot 😉 Not exactly my prefered style of music, but this album does me no harm. Overall a bit too aged for my taste. 2,5
Dont listen if not well rested
Not my thing.
Shoot me, but I just didn't enjoy the vocals
Nice and emotive... Just a bit irritating at times
wasnt a huge fan of her voice
Förlåt Nina men jag gillar det inte. Det är tråkigt och jag orkar knappt lyssna klart. Jazziga trummor är bland det värsta jag vet. Men Break Down And Let It All Out är helt okej så en 2a kan det få bli.
Grym röst. Tråkiga sånger. Ett album med låtar som "blev över" från tidigare sessioner (enligt wiki). Då kanske man inte skulle gett ut det?
Didn't really connect with this one. I haven't listened to much of her catalog before and I wasn't engaged with this one.
Can imagine it's an important album, definitely at the time, but wouldn't relisten. Was cool to hear some original version of songs that have been sampled in other songs (Story of OJ for example), but overall was a little grand/epic for my tastes.
did not listen
I understand that her lyrics and message are very powerful. The first two songs were decent. However the music and her voice were problematic. The songs were sloppy and nor well put together. Her voice is great at times, but out of tune on runs and other moments. Not great.
I have not heard this album before. Nina is dynamic singer. This may be good. After listening: her voice is unusual and striking. The lyrics were melodramatic (maybe that's why I don't like jazz vocals). The songs are uneven. With the right material, I'm sure she adds much to the song; just not on this album very often... 2 Stars
This was ok? It kind of came and went and didn't stand out to me, but her voice is great. 2*
Interesting, a glimpse into the inherent pain that is womanhood. Good album not my favorite.
Eh
I really wanted to like this but couldn't get into it, despite how much I love David Bowie's version of the title track. I generally prefer her small band work, especially live, and her original material, of which there seems to be very little on this album. I read later that it's a compilation of previously unreleased material and I wonder if that is why it felt a little meandering to me.
Might be blasphemous, but her voice just doesn't do it for me. Album is a bunch of random songs from different recording sessions so it lacks cohesion. Nina only wrote one song on the album which knocks it down a star.
Good for background jazz
I can see the appeal, just doesn't work for me. Will I listen to again: 0%
not a fan can’t really say much
Wild Is the Wind by Nina Simone starts off on a strong note, with her captivating voice drawing you in from the beginning. Her vocal talent is undeniable and she delivers the song with passion and emotion. However, I found that the music accompanying her vocals lacked the same level of intensity and excitement. This disconnect between Simone's incredible voice and the less captivating music made it difficult for me to fully engage with the album. As a result, I found myself not fully listening to what she had to say, despite her undeniable talent. Overall, while Simone's performance is impressive, the album as a whole didn't quite hit the mark for me. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 1 STAND OUT TRACK - I Love Your Lovin' Ways
If I cared for this style of music, I suppose this is all right. But since I don’t, I didn’t really enjoy it. Not terrible….not great….just ok.
Didn't like it as much as I was hoping to.
Eh, not great
Ok Jazz, nothing too spectacular.
#116. I'm finding that I just can't really get into this older pop and r&b stuff. I try to give it a fair listen, but this shit just bores me. 2/5: meh
I don’t doubt that Nina is great and all, but she just doesn’t do it for me
Not really my type of music
Ok
Story of OJ sample "Four Women" GOATED Rest of album=boring
only listened to the first 30 seconds of each song break down and let it all out seemed pretty good, the rest not so much overall felt too slow
Ähhh die Lyrics erzählen gute Geschichten?
First couple tracks were great, but Nina Simone's vibrato is not for me for extended periods of time
I only know her very famous stuff. Nothing seemed very memorable to me on this. Although I did quite like the dum dum song at the end
Kind of boring.
2/5 naaaah
Wollte es mögen, aber hat mich leider nicht gecatched
Powerful feel in both her vocals and piano playing. Not necessarily my thing but enjoyed listening and learning about her back story.
Gorgeous voice and talent. Not much I would listen to again, but it was pleasant while it was on
Amazing lyrics and songs that could be powerful in the right contexts but this isn’t my style. I’m also not a fan of her vibrato. Sadly, not for me. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Four Women Rating: 2
Really not into this one. Some ok spots, but a hard listen for me.
There’s some good stuff but not really my jam
Some of the up beat songs were a ton of fun but the ballads really ran together and didn’t have the musical story telling I was hoping for. Added 1, skipped 5.
Not her best work.
okay
Not a sound I’m used to listening to, but glad for the experience
Good voice but this was consistently slow for me.
Great for what it is but vocal Jazz just isn't my thing.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not really my thing, started well which is disappointing Favourite song: Track 1 - I Love Your Lovin’ Ways
jazzy, samey
The slow piano songs bored the hell out of me, but the rest of it was fine. Mostly just a product of its time
Not my Cup of tea
Que sí, que cantas muy bien.
Mainly jazzy love or lost love tunes. Great piano. Some good songs but some a bit dreary
Great voice but I just didn't really feel this album
Många låter slutar bara mitt i. Gillade hennes energi men lite tråkigt låtar. Kändes även som om albumet aldrig kom igång.
Verkligen inte dåligt men inget jag fastnade för alls heller. Bara lite meh tyvärr. Fav: vet ej.. kanske break down and let it all out?
I liked a couple of songs but not in the mood for jazz in general
i always find nina simone's default grandiosity a bit self indulgent and boring. how wonderful it would be to have an album with tracks all as musically cerebral and artful as four women
Prefer Lilac Wine by Jeff Buckley. Amazing voice, just not my jam
Ok so this is odd, it really did nothing for me! I was looking forward to some sensual, smooth vocals and lush production. Maybe it’s just me, but it just came across as a bit ramshackle and angry. Will not return to it.
There’s no doubt that Nina has one of the more unique voices out there but I found the writing in her songs to be lacking. Her vocals are also overly maudlin for me and this style of torch music is just not my jam. I think Bowie’s cover of Wild is the wind is far superior and the latter-day remixes of her songs to dance music are better, but that’s probably just me since there’s a whack of 5 star ratings here.
This is a hard album for me to rate. I can clearly see this being one of the best examples of its genre which is a kind of soul/jazz/pop album with a focus on the vocals and at times the lyrics. However this is definitely not my style at all and I only really liked the more interesting tracks such as Four Women (although the lyric at the end “Peaches” is kind of weird despite the great vocal) and the more atmospheric title track. I think critically this is a 3 or even 4 star but personally I can only give it 2.
Me puso triste Nina
Not really my thing
I really wanted to love this but I just couldn't get into it.
I enjoyed four women a lot, the rest of the tracks less so. I can appreciate the simplicity, power, and talent on show here, but it's really not the sort of music I enjoy and I would never listen to this again.
I'm not mad about it, there's just not really much there.
I can appreciate how good this is but it's not my cup of tea. Fave song.. what more can I say
Not far me
Que sí, que cantas muy bien.
i listened to like 3/4 of the first song and turned it off honestly.
A song by Billie Holiday came on after this. I enjoyed that much better. Not a big fan of this one.
I appreciate she’s a great singer but really not my kind of thing.2*
The songs are good, but there is something in Nina Simone's voice that I have always found thoroughly off-putting and that prevents me from wanting to spend any more time with her albums than neccessary. 2/5
Not for me
She can really sing, but album felt very reserved and with her holding back, was ok but felt like it was dragging
Meh, wasn't impressed, found Nina a bit droney and the songs were a bit all over the place. Apparently this album is comprised of off cuts from other sessions and it sounds it.
Not the best from Nina. I find her best work to be the piano pieces where her voice really soars, but this album feels very dreary and overproduced.
Great voice and pleasant enough to have on in the background but didn't do much for me.
Half-way through and I feel like it would be good background music; enjoyed track number 2 the best (turns out it's the most popular song off the album). Nina has a unique voice, deep and strong. Second half feels stronger.
I get why people love this, but I just don't actually 'get' it. The mix of styles in the production and the change in sound (most notably on 'Why..?') didn't help the flow, for me. Felt like a compilation rather than a single album. Maybe the mood just didn't fit mine, but this is so earnest without any feeling of a lightness or change of mood. Understandable, but it left me a little disappointed.
Great voice, not my jam.
She has a great voice. It just wasn't my thing. I was hoping for it to pick up even for one track.
Fairly forgettable. Great voice, but none of the songs grabbed me at all.
Ok
Tried to enjoy but not for me. Good vocals
Not my cup of tea. 2, no playlist adds.
I understand the cultural significance or whatever, but this just sounded dissonant to me (and not in a good way).
didnt care for it very much
I've got nothing but respect for Nina, but this didn't do it for me.
Ouch, that was quite painful to listen to. Pretty sure there are much better albums from Simone out there.
Hot take but Nina's voice is actually kinda nasal and I don't enjoy listening to it
-S Tier- ***n/a*** -A Tier- Four Women What More Can I Say -B Tier- Lilac Wine That’s All I Ask -C Tier- Either Way I Lose -D Tier- I Love Your Lovin Ways Break Down and Let It All Out Wild Is the Wind Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair If I Should Lose You -F Tier- Why Keep On Breaking My Heart AVG SCORE: 1.9 / 5 - - - Half good. Half forgettable. “Four Women” is quintessential Nina. Haunting. Powerful. If you listen to nothing else, this track alone makes the album worthwhile. Unfortunately, as the second track, it sets expectations that aren’t met by the remaining songs.
It’s okay but not memorable
Not my jam but pleasant enough.
Didn’t really love this. I was expecting something more like soul/R&B/Motown, but this was more creepy/melancholy jazzy. 2 stars.
Was fun to recognize the song Four Women as the sample used in Jay-Z's song Story of OJ.
aight
The idea is clearer than the execution here - Simone strives to tackle some weighty issues on this one, but the arrangements are just too sparse to make things feel cohesive enough
I’m sorry I just didn’t like it. the first few songs were alright then it slowed down and lengthened and just was not appeasing to me in any way. I think she has a really good voice but just not my type of music.
Not for me, was ok
Damn near put me back to sleep. Had some nice melodies and was relaxing but not a good morning album.
I'm not sure what happened... started off strong, the lyrical power of "Four Women" was awesome, and of course "Lilac Wine" but then I just felt on edge and anxious for the second half. Also not my typical jam.
Could be a lot better
She’s got a great voice, but it’s not really my thing.
Mijn favorieten "I Love Your Loving' Ways", "Break Down And Let It All Out" en "Either Way I lose". **
Legendary voice. Legendary woman.
Recently, I was watching Jett (an entertaining Carla Gugino vehicle) and Simone's cover of Save Me was featured, touted as clearly superior to Aretha's! Apparently, in the last 10 years or so, the arbiters of the zeitgeist decided that anyone who thinks Nina Simone is dank is suitably fetch. Since even entertaining the idea that Nina Simone is superior to the Queen of Soul is a particularly nauseating example of cultural revisionism, and I've never been favorably impressed by Nina Simone to begin with, I was reluctant to waste 45 minutes that I would never get back by listening to this album. Surprisingly, it isn't completely horrible. True, Simone doesn't have an especially impressive instrument, a definite liability in a musical era that was littered with tremendous R&B vocalists. Her pitch wobbles, the timbre of her voice is borderline unpleasant, and her vibrato is irritating. Several of the arrangements are dated, and frankly are pretty rank even for the time. But Simone is capable of expressing and communicating feelings through her admittedly limited vocals. And I was moved by her lyrics on Four Women. It is obvious to me, even being completely ignorant about Simone's personal life, that Simone brings emotional authority to her interpretations, and a willingness to bare her soul. That is not nothing. Still, putting this album on any kind of list? Come on now. Really?
I'm sure this is great but it wasn't working for me when I tried to listen.
Not my thing
Pas mon style préféré de Nina Simone.
Don't really like vocal albums
Not my thing
Great voice and interesting selections but not a fan
Quite liked it. Perfect music if you’re sitting in a nice bar but I don’t think I’d want to play this at home again.
My own personal taste is that I don't like her voice I'm afraid, some solid songs though but found it tough listening
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Four Women, Either Way I Lose Cutting Edge: Lilac Wine Overall Notes: Good music, just not my kind of thing. I'm glad this exists, but it's not meant for me.
Not my type. Sweet voice though
I liked Ms. Simone's version of Lilac Wine, but that was about it. Otherwise, not my cup of tea.
no es de mi gusto, pero la música es buena
4
Buena voz. No me ha llenado especialmente.
It's another emperor's new clothes album. People are too afraid to say they don't listen to this old music that doesn't have a good production quality. It was good then, it inspired later artists, it has a place in music history, you should hear it once I guess. It isn't something you listen to again though because there are newer, better albums today. That's with a lot of this list. She's a good singer but time changes all, even music.
It's a nice album but Nina's work isn't really my thing. She's talented. 5/10.
Like the music and some of the lyrics, but it's not my style. Some songs feel very similar.
Not really for me. Each song sounded the same and a little too depressive but not in a good way.
Good Album to put on in the background... Not much interested in listening on the regular though
Ok I guess.
Just didn't grab me Nina. I'm sorry Nina Simone, you just didn't grab me. Also, 'my name is........ PPPEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAACCCCCHHHHHEEEESSSSSSS
