Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Effortlessly cool, I recognised absolutely none of it so was completely fresh to my ears. I dug this.

Excellent album from the 80's. Brings back a lot of memories. I don't think I have ever actually listened to this album from start to finish before. Prince had a wonderful grasp on R&B and could lay down some rock and roll as well. A great listen.

Not my favorite Prince album, but still very good.

Living in Minnesota it is sad to write I did not appreciate the talent level of Prince until after he died

Prince never fails to deliver banger after banger.

Um bom álbum, gostei da vibe dele. Posso ate ouvir ele mais vezes.

Obviously great album but there are a couple duds on it imo

It’s not my favorite Prince album but it may be the most Prince of all Prince albums.

So much sex song, geez. Still-FUNKy

This was a delightful album, and even though a double album, it doidn't feel like it, and it never became anywhere near boring. Not all songs might be of the same high quality, but with songs as U Got the Look (which to me will always be a loveletter to that excellent cowbell) and The Cross (Prince at his best?) it reaches incredible heights as well. I enjoyed Prince knows how to leave things out instead of putting them in, which makes him different from many of his 80's counterparts.

More Prince, but that's a good thing. He could honestly have like 5 albums on here and it wouldn't seem out of place. There's some funny similarities with this and Physical Graffiti. I got both on a snowy Friday, and they don't exactly fit the weather, but are still excellent listens. Both are around 80 minutes, and probably the second or third most famous album by S tier artists. Both have a variety of songs but also just go hard the whole time. I'll still never be into the random talking at certain points, but these songs are so upbeat, fun, and energizing rare is hard to not have a great time listening.

Not as good as Purple Rain

Grandes recuerdos, un loco innovador

This was nice in the background while I was working tbh

Fire, soothing, jazzy elements are always nice, 83/100

Without backlogging a review with my personal relationship with Prince, Sign ☮️ the times is not my favorite version of the artist but holds up. The message for 1987 is real. First album without the Revolution and his NINTH studio release. The prolifically abundant artist never failed but this is production worthy of a few potential reworks. Incredible messaging and dripping with sex.

Some really good tracks, and some bad ones. The crappy 80s drum track sound doesn't hold up in my opinion, but isnt too annoying in most songs. Title track is my favorite. 3.7.

Pissefed og også lidt overrated imo!

This one really took me back. Great title track. I enjoyed rediscovering this album.

Very enjoyable to listen to this again. It’s been many years. Purple Reign!

I have always yearned to love Prince albums but i can never quite get there. I feel like he’s the natural born live performer whose albums would never live up to that. Not a studio artist. Couple of bangers on here though. 3.8

A solid mix of great songs and some OK songs

Might get slightly downvoted because it sounds like where the 80s sound came from. Much better than expected lyrically. To revisit.

I still think Purple Rain is his best.

Good! Too long.

I believe this is the 3rd Prince album I've been given yet my favorite Prince album is probably not on the list. That of course is Dirty Mind. This one I'd never listened to all the way through and it's good and should get another listen. House quake!

Such a cool album. It shows how eclectic Prince was.

Very versatile, at times very funky

Muss man kennen. Grundlage für andere Musiker. "Purple Rain"!!!

One of the greats

Not my genre at all but very very good

Prince is a musical genius. Take a look at the credits for this album. Vocals-Prince Back up vocals-Prince All instruments-Prince Too bad it’s not his best album.

It’s a bit long and it doesn’t quite live up to any of the hits that I’m already aware of. But it’s still vibey as shit! Simpsons: of course

Genre busting

5 as an expansive album that does so many genres so well. 4 for personal taste.

First prince album ever, what a trip! Play in the sunshine drew me in. Love the ad libing and stuff he’s legit hilarious. It’s not hard to see this type of musical style and personality influencing all sorts of artists, like even Tyler maybe

Double albums always tend to be a little messy. It’s always a lot of music, and with album lengths often extending over an hour, there are some real endurance test double albums. They occasionally border on over-indulgent and excessive. But if there was ever an artist that would make a concise and well paced double album, it would be Prince. Prince felt like a virtuoso in the truest sense of the word. He was simply good at every instrument he played, had a beautiful voice with crazy range, and created some of the most well put together albums of the 80’s. He was a sultry sex icon. And his musical persona is really felt on this. This very much feels like Prince’s version of a synth funk album. Another artist could make the same songs, but you would feel the difference, because it isn’t him. This album starts off incredibly strong, with the entire A-side being filled with excellent songs. I’m a total sucker for a song like The Ballad of Dorothy Parker. Something about how soft it is, combined with the synth bass and electronic drums sounds so cool. The album then has a few highlights here and there. And then peaks on the D-side. Those last three songs are all amazing. I love how different and separate The Cross is to the rest of the album. It’s darker and slower, but doesn’t stray too far from the core strengths of the record. It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night is a disco/funk masterpiece. I want all funk music to sound like that. And Adore ends the album off sweetly. Rating: 8/10

Didn’t get through Al of it, but liked the general styles and vibe,

I feel this comparison is disrespectful. But I felt I was listening to a funkier Michael Jackson. It was nice, nothing remarkable tho

I agree purple rain is a better album but I really enjoyed the wide range of instruments and styles on the go here. 80s &90s rock sounds, ballads (the cross), bit of hip hop (housequake), soul stuff. Truly talented man. Feels like he was making a bit of a statement with it all

I think 80 minutes of Prince is too much tbh, this has enough great songs to make up for it though I think. Cut the last song and it'd be better imo, but so it goes.

Prince is prince

Fab! First album so far that I didn't already have that I want to get.

Good and very funky! I’ve never been much of a Prince fan which is a total shame.

Swingt wel lekker

goat of pop music, but i don’t like pop that much

Poppy love making music from 80s. Funky. I like it

Pure Prince. For me, the best track is the title track "Sign o' the Times".

Prince var snillingur. Ótrúlegt samansafn af frábærum og gerólíkum lögum. Sign O the times, Starfish and coffee og I could never take the place of your man, ekki mikil líkindi milli þessara frábæru laga. Góðir textar líka. The Cross greip mig í þessari yfirferð, magnað lag.

Man I missed the whole Prince train. Completely thought I didn’t like any of it but listening to his full albums makes me appreciate his talent so much! And the amount of songs of his that people are sampling now is crazy. He truly was a legend. Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: If I was your girlfriend

Very nice but unfortunately it's not my jam. However I enjoyed it a lot

The album starts with a weird juxtaposition with the bare, minimal opening track, followed by the upbeat and overstuffed Play in the Sunshine, but the final few passages of the latter demonstrate some really interesting and lovely shifts in tone. Housequake was a little jarring, with Prince’s alter ego “Camille” being introduced for the first time. This was one of the few tracks I was iffy on. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is absolutely fascinating. There are some dated sounds on the track, but Prince uses his pitch-shifted vocals to amazing effect. The track kind of goes off the rails at the end. From there onwards, it's all a little overwhelming with SO many ideas here, most of which work really well. I think there is so much material it almost demands additional listens to really appreciate.

Really comprehensive album, like the relaxed vibe. Some really interesting accompanying instruments. Very strong love themes. Much more relaxed and in tune with songs that I like currently. Prince does love his runs and I am here for it

Not a lot of hits, but this is still a great Prince record. What impressed me the most was the consistency from front to back. Normally double albums can be a bit of a slog to listen to, but this album kept the momentum the whole way through.

Prince is always a good time. I don't think this is his best album, but there are some great tunes here.

chaotic good.

I really like Prince, so this was right in my happy zone. That said, I don't think this is Prince's strongest album. It's really good. But it also has some tracks that are very mediocre (The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Hot Thing being two examples). Still a really solid listen.

Not Prince's best album, but still pretty damn good.

I had never heard this Prince album before and - initially - I was a little disappointed that some of his "hits" weren't on here (and it was over an hour long). But, man, Prince never disappoints. He's got an iconic voice and style, he's probably one of the most talented pop arrangers/composers ever, and it's just good. I can't describe why - it's just good.

Awesomesauce

I missed this when it 1st came out. A travesty! Sounds superb and relevant now

A good album to let play in the background and just chill to with many fun songs. But because the album is so long, I don’t see myself listening to this or any song in particular on the regular.

Pretty solid. The first song threw me for a loop - it was not what I expected. The rest of the record was pretty good.

Holy smokes

Quite remarkable musicianship

Y'all knew about Prince's pterodactyl noises and didn't say anything? The second half of this album just gets better and better

Today I learned I like Prince a lot more than I thought.

The rarest of birds, a double album that doesn't get boring. Very of its time. Also, great.

A little bloated but c’mon, it’s Prince

One of the best and certainly most prolific songwriters of our time. This isn't my favorite album, but the the music is still so well written.

Not my favorite, but still good!

enjoyable but wo strong feelings

loved it

Not my favourite prince album. Some of the driums are simply irritating

It was a bit hard to follow at first but the last 6 or 7 songs are quintessential Prince. Will definitely be listening again

Embarrassed to say this might be the first full Prince album I’ve heard. Great sounds. He rules.

The pop/R&B sound on this album is second to none. The individual songs are not that memorable, though. After the first few songs, the rest seemed like iterations of the same themes.

All Prince albums are fantastic. This one is very eclectic, more drum machine than usual, but still great. Funky, great guitar solos, great jams. I could never take the place of your man is a standout for me. Really enjoyed.

Hadn’t listened to this, very different than the Prince I do know. Since it’s Prince, you can assume it will be captivating. I liked it overall, but this might’ve been the beginning of a small decline.

Icon. First time hearing this album, and loved it. Strange Relationship and U Got the Look are highlights for me.

not a purple rain but I like this very funk oriented and the last few songs are good

Never got into Prince. Its funky, I like it

Great album, has slow/emotional songs as well as more fast paced, pop songs. 3.75 for me

Heel fijn.

While this album is a little bloated, it showcases a lot of Prince’s strengths with some killer tracks.

Exactly what I would expect from a Prince record, sassy, sexy and outrageously groovy. Sign 'O' The Times finds the Purple One in a direct, if stripped down form. The beats are decidedly 80s, but that works. I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man stands out.

I can’t believe how many artists I only listen to their hit singles. Prince is no exception. I’ve heard songs like Sign ‘O’ The Times, Raspberry Beret and Purple Rain sure. But other than that, just not so much, and that’s a shame. Because he was such an inspiring artist. He wrote great songs and this record features a lot of good moments! Smooth funk with some electronic vibes to more bluesy, jazzy tracks. A very nice record. 8 out of 10

Great Album with some more outstanding Songs, liked it!

I don't love all of Prince's music, but this was phenomenal. The artistry and talent shown on the album is crazy. Not an easy or short listen, but well worth the time. Probably one of the best albums to come out of 80's pop hell

Went for a hot girl walk to this one

Funny, enjoyable, sleek and multilayered.

Klasse album, funk/pop/rock, imponerende, nyskabende, catchy

This one is a solid 4 for me. You can’t help but appreciate the musicianship of Prince and the rest of the band. But I gauge these albums with the question, would I listen to this album again/multiple times? And I would have to say no - Prince never really was my cup of tea growing up, but I definitely do appreciate this album.

Still fine

pretty much every song on this album is just candy for the ears.

Prince was a talented & complicated weirdo

Really liked this, was probably my type of vibe. Didn't listen through all of it, and I don't have any standout songs that I particularly like, but all of it was just really good. The songs were also very varying to me - in a good way. My only gripe might be that it was a bit too long of an album.

Groovy, funky, but not enough bangers

A double album's worth of varied funky pop songs with the central recurring theme being that Prince likes sex. At all stages of life, in all weather, at any time of day, and in lots of different ways. If Jay from the Inbetweeners was a musical genius, his album may not be completely dissimilar. That is not to diminish this piece of work. As an 80 minute double album it settles in nicely and the twists and turns on each of the four sides keep you interested and make its length an asset. I liked some sides (especially Side 3) and some songs more than others, but there is nothing on here that I would cut. I can see why many consider this a great album, Prince's magnum opus and perhaps the last great double album. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man Date listened: 26/04/23

I've struggled a bit to get into Prince's music and this album will not help. I'll give it a good rating, as I do think it's an important album, but I can't say I have gotten into the music.

Great stuff, less pop-y and more thoughtful, mature and interesting than much of his work.

The third Prince album I got on the list and even being too much "pop" for my ears, it's the best one until now, and it has the best Prince stuff (in my opinion, of course), that is his musical variety on instruments and themes as in the lyrics. It's the third I got and the first I really agree that deserves to be on a list like this.

A classic. I never got into Prince in his heyday but it's pretty easy to see why he is a legend. 8/10

Packed full of musical flavours. The ballad of Dorothy Parker is my fave prince song, plus half a star for that.

Groovy as ever especially the second half. Also feel like the synth from Ballad of Dorothy Parker was used by Daft Punk in a song on Discovery (maybe Something About us?)

I think this is only the second Prince album that I've listened to (I got Purple Rain on this list a while ago). This album is interesting. Very relaxed, yet the music still feels full. I do love the drum machine he uses throughout this album (and apparently most of his other albums 4/5

Not my style but i can tell when a hit is a hit. And this is a hit.

Some duds like Dorothy Parker, but lots of winners. Slow Love is fantastic. If Prince was my girlfriend then he'd be a pedo. It's Gonna be a Beautiful Night is a certified JAM. I wish I could see Prince perform live. Some good songs, some great songs, some actual duds. Doesn't have me dying to listen to this album again any time soon.

This didn't always hit for me, and the remaster on Spotify is weirdly mixed. But I just can't help but admire Prince for making a completely insane one-hour 20-minute album that keeps the same crazy level of energy all the way through.

It's really good!

This is good but it doesn't lift me often enough to get a really top score. I like I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man, Hot Thing, U Got the Look especially, and there's some great evocative language, but more a 4 than a 5 for me.

Some absolute magic in there, but a bit too bloated to get a 5. Apparently this was due to be a triple album, but the record company insisted they cut it down to two and I'm glad they did. That said, the length of it does give him a chance to really show off his musical versatility, he sings in several different voices, and the songs are in so many different styles and paces. I like it less when it trips into disco, but he nails funk, soul, R&B, and probably a few more genres over the course of this album. 4/5.

It's catchy. It's prince.

Prince e semi goat

Great album, has some amazing tracks on here like I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, U Got The Look and the title track.

What to say about this genre-hopping, somewhat sprawling 16 songs from one of the greatest songwriters of the era? There's easily an 8 to 10-song mix to be made for each kind of Prince fan out there that would perhaps serve them better than just taking this whole album in. Sexy Pop, Social Commentary, Party-Funk, low-key traditional singer-songwriter, you can have all this and more if you take it all in at once. This record feels made for a different attention span, a different media landscape, for people who are effectively trained to listen in a different way. What even is a "Two Disc Set", he asks rhetorically... In the end, it is Prince penning a few more classics in an album that was a Sign 'O' the Times and in many ways hasn't aged as well as some of his other work due to that fact. And finally, let's be real, Prince needed to be Prince lyrically for greatness to be achieved, for the gold to be struck. You take the good with the cornball writing that sometimes makes its way to tape when listening to him. You forgive the completely goofy lines because they created the space for him to tell the truth and cut to the core elsewhere in the song or maybe on another track entirely. This is one of the Prices of Prince we pay along the way. On a record like this it is even more apparent to me than others.

very enjoyable, should relisten but it's a least a 4

This one's kinda new to me. Only know one song - the Sheena Easton duet You Got the Look, which is not a terrible 80s hit. Now for the album impressions. First off it's too long by about 20 minutes but it does have 5 or 6 really good songs. The opening title track is a mid-tempo commentary on 80s society that has a great burbling bass line that draws the listener in. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker is a off-beat love song, Hot Thing is hyper dance track that absolutely cooks. I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man has a classic power-pop feel with a sweet melody and hooks that just won't quit. But my favourite track is The Cross which sounds like some classic alternative rock song, complete with a poignant vocal & guitar intro punctuated with a huge kick drum understated guitar figures. It would sound at home on an 80s Springsteen U2 album. This song and inseed the whole album, shows that Prince can adopt any style he likes and make it his own. Sign 'O' the Times is a sprawling messy affair that misses on occasion but when it hits it hits BIG. 4 stars

Good but too long tbh got kinda repetitive

It’s good but can be a bit of a slog at points and I’m not a massive prince fan still good though 4/5

5* if it was a tad shorter

Not to be confused with Harry Styles song

There's an ebullience and willingess to throw everything behind the idea of funking freely that's a mark of genius. And plenty of quality matieral here – title cut, of course, but also “Dorothy Parker” and “Starfish and Coffee” and “If I Was Your Girlfriend” (which shows how less is more in terms of layering instruments and sounds) “Never Take the Place of You” (with pure ‘80s synth feel) and “Adore.” But there's also general sense of excess and indulgence that suggest the vision might've been better served with a bit of trimming and some general restraint (not the Purple One's groove, one knows). There are blind spots, too, an overrliance on those whooping little screams, for instance, on maximalist arrangements and on drum machines that have not helped up too durably and threaten the sub-top-shelf tunes, of which there's a surfeit here. The planned triple album would not have much helped. Put another way: there's a lot to like here mainly because there's a lot.

As always Prince delivers tight grooves that have the ability to stray out of the lines for either a ridiculous guitar solo or the horniest sexual yelping you've ever heard. Even the more serious tracks manage to land. Favorite tracks: "Housequake", "Strange Relationship", "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man"

Prince's voice is so unique. This album is both so funky and chill. I haven't listened to many Prince songs, but I definitely think this has to be some of his best work. Also, the bass lines are so good. Face track(s): The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

This was pretty good but like most double albums there were some songs I’d cut. My favorite was “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man”. I’m surprised it was remastered to recently as the whole album sounded a bit tinny to me.

Ballad of dorothy Parker, Slow love I Don know much prince but enjoyed it will listen more

Great, interesting, funky album that spans the gamut of Prince sounds. "Ballad of Dorothy Parker" and "Housequake" were good tracks to revisit outside of the obvious hits.

4.5 stars. Great album. Prince shows phenomenal talent. Crosses multiple genres. Very well-produced, crisp and clean but doesn't lose emotion. Standout is "The Cross".

Another great album from Prince.

Nice album with some very weird songs lyrically (creeped me out a bit). Good listen though Saved tracks: Play In The Sunshine, Housequake, It, Hot Thing, The Cross

Pretty damn revolutionary in its day. Still sounds brilliantly fresh today.

Not a huge prince fan, the album was good though.

Endlessly (and brashly) creative, but sometimes self-indulgently so, as if he might have been better served by having less studio gadgetry to hand or more rigid structure. (One likes sex jokes and references and sexiness as much as the next guy, but perhaps there is too much of it here – gets a little tedious. Certainly the synths and drum machines sound awfully dated (occupational hazard for musicians of this era). Opening title cut is pretty great, and other outright (and oddball) winners include “Dorothy Parker” and “Starfish and Coffee” and “If I Was Your Girlfriend” and “Never Take the Place of You” (which has an all-time ‘80s synth hook) and “Adore.” Given the richness of the quality here, one struggles to understand how there weren’t more hits; on the other hand, given public taste, it’s not so surprising.

I don't like the alter ego vocals, but otherwise great album musucally

Despite only ever hearing the bigger hits from Prince (his greatest hits were on loop in my car for a good while), I still always had a great admiration for him. He pushed gender boundaries and sexuality in a time when it was far more taboo, and that’s frankly a very easy thing to love. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Starfish and Coffee, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man It’s hard not to compare these songs to hits like Raspberry Beret and Little Red Corvette. Personally, I don’t think that the tracks on this album were quite as strong as some of his other work. However, there isn’t a single song I didn’t enjoy, and it definitely has that funk-charm that Prince is known for. There are no blazing guitar solos here like you’d find in Purple Rain, but it’s is still a strong album for what it is. I’ll likely be returning to some tracks from this, but with such a big Prince discography out there I do not think that this is up there with his best. But again, to be clear, it is still excellent.

One of Prince's best.

Love Prince and this album is one of his best. It's all over the place while still sounding cohesive. Somehow simultaneously minimalist and lush. And above all else, funky as fuck.

I’d listen again

Pretty descent

Yes, very good

This was wonderful. Sexy, soulful, funky, marvelously textured arrangements. Arguably Prince's best album. Fave Songs: U Got the Look, Slow Love, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, Starfish and Coffee, Adore, If I Was Your Girlfriend

I quite like his early stuff.

I couldn't give Prince less than 4 stars for anything that he ever did.

It's a solid effort from Prince. I appreciate this album is pretty consistently solid all the way through. There are no mind-blowing tracks, but if I'm measuring this album on it's own and not against other Prince releases, it's def a 4.

Well the idea of an 80s double album seemed like a daunting until the title track came on and Prince woo’ed me into enjoying over an hour and a half of his music. So much groove, so much soul with a dash of tongue in cheek and plenty of sexiness - it’s Prince - sans his most popular songs but still a great album.

It’s a great album but just short of his absolute pinnacle.

me gustó mucho uwu 8 /10

Peak 80s, incredible energy. Prince is a glaring black spot in my musical awareness

Prefs: Sign "O" The Times, Play in the Sunshine, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, It, Starfish and Coffee, Slow Love, Hot Thing, Forever in My Life, U Got The Look, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Strange Relationship, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, The Cross, It's Gonna a Beautiful Night Moins pref: Housequake

I was going to give this a four for the fun bops, but If I was Your Girlfriend kinda creeped me out and it moved into three star status. the rest of the album actually moved it back into four stars. Good stuff.

Disc 1 HL: Housequake, Starfish & Coffee, Slow Love Disc 2 HL: I Could Never…, Strange Relationship, Adore Not 1st listen, but I appreciated it more this time around. The slower, minimalistic songs give way to an O.TT. finale that reminded me what a tour de force Prince must have been in the 80s August 29, 2022

I had forgotten how much I liked this album, all great tracks

Misto, ușor ușor a început sa îmi placa

Really diverse and good. No weak songs.

For me the is last great Prince album, some really great songs, a few not so great, always a problem with double albums. For me it's not quite 5 stars, Dirty Mind, 1999 and Purple Rain I think are much stronger albums and are all 5 stars.

Something satisfying about knowing that I had good taste in 1986

Good album with prince experimenting on some lesser known songs with his music but majority of his songs focus around what prince was most know for his “sensual “ lyrics and vocals

I've always had a hard time getting into Prince, and felt the man himself was what people liked as I didn't find the music (mostly the big singles) to be that outstanding. Listening to Sign o the times I definitely gained much more of an appreciation for his musical style. I wasn't familiar with any of the tracks on this double album but it flowed very well, had a great sense of funk and soul and it pulled me in the longer it went.

Good but too long man

This suffers in the same way that a lot of double albums do, and is a bit inconsistent (both in quality and in tone) but there's enough great stuff across here to make it enjoyable on the whole, especially the second half (though the live song drags on waaaaay to much, low point of the album for sure)

80s electro funk at it's finest

Second favorite Prince album I’ve heard. Ballad of Dorothy Parker is one of my favorites

Sign doesn't have Prince hits, at least not ones I know. Despite that, it's a lovely dance record. The blend of the political and sexual comes in slightly less than perfect to my ear.

Def bloated and kinda inconsistent, but there is definitely a ton of great stuff to get into here

Loved the classic singles, but with a repeat listen really enjoyed the stuff if never heard before. Unmistakable Prince and has encouraged me to seek lesser known album tracks.

Some great tracks on here like "Sign O the Times" and 'I could never take the place of your man". I think perhaps the album is over long, and some of the production is a bit off but a corker nonetheless.

Chaotic Good.

I have heard some tracks and albums from Prince, but Sign 'O' The Times was all new music. I'm still not sure what to do with Prince. I was surprised that this album was an easy listen. I probably didn't pay enough attention to the lyrics. I'm sure I missed something, but I came out liking this album enough. Curiousity might bring me back.

Classic

Half the songs weren’t available…

I don't always like albums that have many different styles of songs like there is on here, I usually feel like it takes away from the pacing and makes it too inconsistent for my enjoyment. That doesn't mean I wouldnt listen to those songs on their own, but when put into one package I usually feel like it makes the whole thing drag a lot. With all that being said, I did not at all have that issue here, there's so many great songs that it's really hard to even get too upset with something like that, especially when you know this was going to be a triple album that was slimmed down to a double LP at the request of the record company. This was also my first Prince album I listened to from one side to the other. I loved it. There's a reason why this man has gone down as one of the most legendary acts in modern music history.

An album for the fans. It's a lot of fun, very pop-like and accessible, appeals to the contemporary R&B crowd, tons of synths and a standout drum kit to dance to, and littered with James Brown-esque funk rock. It's not a very good beginner Prince album though. Being a double album already makes it a heavy task to devote to. But nothing resembles hits as in 1999 or Purple Rain. And it's not very consistent either. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The style, tempo, and mood keep changing from track to track and it can be a lot of fun, but don't go in expecting for a cohesive experience. It feels more like Prince experimenting with a lot of ideas and having them work out. I'll definitely be playing this if I'm looking for variety 80s pop. Especially by one of the kings of pop.

Enjoyed the album quite a bit- "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man" had a catchy instrumental at the end. At the moment I still prefer Purple Rain to this, but this is definitely one that I'll revisit later.

Fav tracks: - Sign 'O' the Times - U Got the Look - If I Was Your Girlfriend Least fav: - It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night

Little too long

Great album though I'd have preferred it cut down a bit more.

Solid album, not my favourite from Prince though.

Not my favourite but some great songs in there. Bit up and down I thought.

4.4 + One of Prince's four or five great records. For me, this one's notable for deeper cuts like "It", "Starfish And Coffee", "Forever In My Life."

My first Prince! Funky and soulful. I’m sure it would anger fans, but I could have done without some tracks. Still overall very solid.

I have an overall appreciation for Prince so a bit prejudiced. Can listen to this any time and not be disappointed

it's prince

Funky, double album that doesn't feel like filler.

Was there anything he couldn't do? I mean, really.

3.7, not sure what i was expecting but it's not amazing

fun and funky. quintessential prince.

Listened Before? N Another gap in my musical experience. Prince. First Prince album I've listened to beginning-to-end. Pros: Well, I now see why he was considered a pioneer and why he was so popular. This album is very, very good. Highly skilled production and never gets boring. It's very impressive that he pulled this off basically as a one man band. His attitude is INCREDIBLE. Prince gives no fucks. A classic of the 80's! Cons: Unfortunately not ENOUGH my style to add the whole album. I'll come back to it in the future I'm sure, but right now it's not really in my wheelhouse. Fairly dated lyrically, but that's okay. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Housequake, U Got the Look

“Established Prince as the greatest rock and roll musician of the era — as singer-guitarist-hooksmith-beatmaster, he has no peer.“

Big album. Great opener. Love Prince.

Class album...

Well I never heard this album before and I generally enjoyed its everything AND the kitchen sink esthetic. A few good songs, a few throwaway and one absolutely great tune that I had never heard; The Cross, which sounds like a moody, heartfelt post punk anthem that could have come off of a Sebadoh album (if it weren't for the gorgeous vocal performance). 4 🌟 for The Cross.

Very sexy album. Struggled to get going, the first few songs really didn't hit but once over that hurdle there was several fantastic songs that followed.

Straight out of the golden era of Prince! I didn't know all of the tunes on this album and I loved pretty much all of them! Juicy 80s beats, some naughty lyrics and mix in the wacky unique Prince personality. Really enjoyed it! It's not a 5 though, every single song wasn't perfection a couple of them missed for me but enjoyed the journey of listening. 4.5!

I liked 'the cross' most, can't say why

I recognise that these are all bangers but prince's vibes are just so rancid to me!! good stuff tho

Very funky and fun. Prince is a legend and so easily crafts these catchy jazz-pop-funk tracks. Heard Parliament Funkadelic vibes on Housequake, and the songs like Ballad of Dorothy Parker like influenced modern R&b/funk artists like Anderson .Paak. Favourite Tracks: Sign I'm the Times, Ballad of Dorothy Parker, The Cross

Hoera voor Prince! Fijne, gevarieerde plaat.

Fun and light, cool instrumentals and reallyncool guitar work. Just a little too poppy for my taste. 7/10.

Never been a huge Prince fan but was a fun album. A little too sexual for me at times. Felt like a peak into the 80s for sure

Decent old jams. Love track #1 and 3

i never really cared for prince while he was alive. there's still something about his music that puts me off, but christ, his talent is undeniable, innit?

Diverse sounds. This album shows the range Prince had and is easily one the best Prince albums.

I’m not the biggest fan in the world. I think maybe I want funk to be dance music, where as this is definitely funky but kinda sit down funk? Maybe because he seems like a bit of a wanker? Dunno, but I like it but don’t love it.

Very groovy, house quake was amazing song

8/10, good prince album, quite long though

8/10. Pretty good, but certainly not my favorite Prince album. Had good variety which helped mitigate the length, but not much of it stood out to me.

September 27, 2021 This is fun - I enjoyed "Housequake", "Strange Relationship", "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man". Not as epic as I expected given what everyone says about Prince.

a good album by prince. Though this probably havsn't stood the test of time like purple rain has.

a pretty good pop album. 4.4/5 stars

Prince is underrated in a ton of ways. His guitar playing is out of this world... He's an unbelievable innovator... he has a great voice and pretty much everything he does funks. I've not always liked his songs, but I always had a huge appreciation for him. So I'm really glad that I enjoyed this album as much as I did - it's very long, and so there were a few moments that I tuned out, but all in all it was a damn good collection of tunes with a cohesive feel and sound

I love 80s pop, rock and prog, but have somehow never gone out of my way to listen to Prince. Turns out that was a mistake, because this album is fantastic. I'll probably end up listening to a LOT of Prince this month. The alter ego songs are fun, the instrumentation is great and the production is top notch.

Fantastic.

With Sign O' The Times, Prince capitalized on the success of Purple Rain, bringing us another strong album of creative sounds, catchy hooks and stirring soul/funk. The title track, while of it's time on the surface, is sadly still relevant today. The rhythms in Housequake are divine. I Could Never Take The Place... is a fun pop confection, but also a great jam session. A couple of tracks might be on the racy side (If I Was Your Girlfriend, e.g.) for average listeners and therefore a little off-putting, but there's still no denying his musicality. The Cross brings in so many kitchen-sink elements - pop ballad, raspy rock guitar, the slow-build, Eastern/raga instrumentation, gospel choir - that it shouldn't work, but somehow still does. This is a solid 4 for me, with moments that a clearly higher than that.

Not my favourite Prince, but still good nevertheless. The random vocals support the whole vibe of the album, but sometimes they get annoying.

4/5. Not totally my vibe, but I can appreciate the artistry behind it. Good music to do homework to if I’m looking for something more low-key.

Some of my favorite songs by Prince are on here! Absolute classic.

great funk/pop sound, better on repeated plays, would probably rate a 4.5.

Sounds very 80s,very synthey. Good tunes. As a whole album it didn't feel as much of a masterpiece as Purple Rain, but I actually enjoyed the tunes. The last song The Cross was an absolute genius tune. Replayed it a few times. 4/5 overall just cos that last tune was so good.

love it - some of it isnt great, but when it is good it is amazing.

yeah buddy, prince is jamming on this one!

classic Prince 4.5

Variado, versatil, buen ritmo y buenas vibras (?).

Couldn’t listen to whole album on Spotify but I enjoy

A classic album

Love Prince

Great record. Doesn't drag too much for being a double LP. Prince is a favorite.

I like that there's lots of prince that sounds like it's always been on the radio, but i've never actually heard it before. Everything just sounds like prince.

Admittedly I am not a huge Prince fan but I certainly appreciate him, and I feel like this album exemplifies what is so endearing about him.

I've not heard many of these songs from Prince before, but do like a lot of this.

Some banging tracks

Only version was super delux and it was like 8 hours long. Some good songs in there tho

Catchy, cool, and very 80s. Classic Prince.

This rules. I kinda knew going into it that I’d love but ya, it’s great

I appreciate discovering prince since he is such an icon, I like the funky beats too

Bumping it a star because it is Prince...and that dude has talent. But the album and me just don't see eye to eye.

Prince's well-known singles are good and all, but this is the stuff. A massive album in every way. Best track: It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night

This was a lot better than the other record I listened to by Prince. I am getting a clearer understanding of why he is so highly regarded. The songs on here just made me feel happy. 3.5, but I'll give it 4 stars.

Not my type of music, but a good pop album

It's a classic for a reason!

Funk, soul, rock’n’roll it’s got it all!

not my favorite prince album- some okay stuff in here.

I think this was too 80s for me, there were moments I liked, but I think there are other prince albums that I would prefer to listen to over this one. MY house did in fact NOT quake.

I see why Prince was considered a sex symbol. HIs charisma and confidence is off the charts. I enjoyed Starfish and Coffee, Hot Thing, Forever In My Life. U Got the Look is very 80s. If I was Your Girlfriend was CREEPY!

Wasn't bowled over, there were a few tracks I didn't enjoy at all, but overall the album is ok.

Prince's magnum opus? More like magnum bloatus, ammirite?!

prince always eats i fear

Prince isn't really for me but I can understand his pop appeal

Prince is incredible

I’ve said in other reviews that I am not crazy about Prince, but totally respect his talent. Having said this, I enjoyed this album more than I expected…but I disagree with the critics, in that I prefer Purple Rain. Regarding this record, I could do without the drumming machine and altered vocal pitch; I find both of these really annoying. Anyway, this one comes in at three stars.

Little bit o this, little bit o that ahh album. Honestly, I can understand why this is perhaps one of the most influential albums of the late 80's and early 90's. You can hear an evidently transitory sound in Prince's instrumentation, incorporating more of the artificial "pop-y" sound into it's style. Yes, this was also the case in many 80's songs, but what I heard in this album was the CLEAR shift into the modern music world. Personally, not my cup of tea, some of the songs were rather sporadic and the album as a whole felt more like a compilation of good times in the studio, rather than a cohesive piece of work (which is what I personally enjoy).

P.S. I‘m back, hoffe dass das so bleibt.

A great album with amazing variety, it just didn’t grab me. Which feels silly to say as I know how iconic and talented prince is. I know it’s a good album it’s just not my favourite

Not the best choice for prince

Good album that maybe deserved more of my undivided attention to appreciate.

Half great. Half not great. For me, like all Prince.

This was a tough one for me. I love his voice, I liked a handful of it but a couldn’t fully get into it. Some of the lyrics gave me the ick but I’ve always struggled to not be totally creeped out by Prince. The back half was definitely more enjoyable, ‘I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man’ was the standout for me.

Another record that really upsets me, becuase at its best points it's phenomenal - but it goes on way too long, and some of that time is wasted on fluff.

Very much the same and completely different from the albums I know much better. It’s ok, but I prefer the other stuff much more.

Widely considered by many to be Prince’s Magnum Opus, his greatest accomplishment, his masterpiece. I don’t really disagree with it but I’m personally way more of a Purple Rain and Dirty Mind fan. 7/10

This album literally made me want to jump up and paint and entire mural. The creative energy pulsing through this album was too good not to hear, and I really liked it. Personally not the album that I would rush to listen to, still an amazing display of artistry from Prince.

Not a big fan, I liked some songs but mostly filler. Not bad either, just indifferent

One of the better Prince albums

It could have been a good album if not for the runtime. You could easily cut half the tracks and it would only get better. As it is, it's typical Prince

I’m not a Prince fan but had the chance to see him live once and he was nothing short of amazing. While a pale version of that live experience, there’s a hint of his brilliance in this album.

Sexy songs, sexy man.

Nice interesting album yet not really for me a bit too theatrical

Prince put out great music for decades before he left this place and his talent is not debatable. His presence on this project does not remotely surprise me. That being said this is not some of his best work and I would put his other compilations well ahead of this one. U Got That Look was the lone star of this collection. The rest of the songs are funky like Prince was known to be, but are all about the same level of musicality.

A very 80s sound to me. I usually don't love Prince but this time there were a few songs that I enjoyed! A good vibe and nothing more than that.
