Reviews (page 8 of 13)

It’s good, but too long. Felt like the album quality would improve drastically if they dropped half the songs. Favourite Song: Strange Relationship Honourable Mention: Hot Thing, Sign O the Times

Verstehe er ist horny, ich kochte grad, war es also ausnahmsweise nich, fühle es dementsprechend leider nur mittel. Insgesamt risikolos, teilweise ganz cool.

An interesting album. I wasn’t super familiar with Prince‘s work beforehand, so I could approach this with a fresh ear. I liked the sound and the very eightiness of it, although some of the basslines immediately made me think of old sitcoms - obviously not the music’s fault but due to when and how I grew up. I don’t think I’ll specifically seek it out to listen to it again, and I also skipped the dozens of „rediscovered“ songs added to the remaster, but it still was a really nice one to hear. Would give 3.5 if I could.

Alright, lots of songs with great beats but nothing really memorable.

C’était sympa, mais je ne suis pas spécialement touchée ou embarquée par la musique de Prince.

This wasn't hitting for me.

A lot of great music but also had some lousy tracks

the jams are undeniable, but all the vocal talent and sick 80s beats in the world will not excuse you from horny jail.

Somebody needs to put Prince in solitary confinement in horny jail. Man is a little freak but he makes good beats on the electronic drum machine so I can’t be too mad. The album has its fun moments but I felt like I had to take a cold shower after some of these tracks.

I'm a little disappointed - i got prince and was expecting this amazing album and what i got was a random collection of songs that loosely have a theme today - it's not bad in any way but nothing special or something i'd ever revisit

If it were made by anyone else apart from Prince, I think it would be a better album than it was. The theming and atmosphere of the album were good, but not delivered by Prince. Just not the biggest fan of him.

It's Prince! It's the 80's! It's good! While I was never a huge Prince fan, I've always liked his music. This album seems a bit more mellow than some of his other releases, and for me, didn't have recognizable hits.

Fine pop album, no real thoughts on it. I liked Sign O' The Times the best I think

Prince is back and sexy as ever. I didn't enjoy this album as much as Purple Rain. But I can appreciate the wide variety and range of the instruments over this album. I nice mix of keyboard and brass. Prince sure does love his slow love making.

A couple of good songs, but not one of his best albums.

Kinda one of his less interesting albums and too long but you can't go too wrong with Prince. 6/10

Double albums are tough for me. It’s a long listen and I usually don’t have the time to go through it all at once. So my take-aways can speak to the cohesiveness of the album. So some great tunes here but I struggle to think of when I’ll relisten to the whole album again. Probably should be a two, but this guy is really so good.

All sorts of blends into one, fail to see the appeal of this, there's better prince albums. I would suspect this is included only save for the artist who created it 2.5*

2.7 1x not bad but i still dont really get the love for prince

This was fine. A lot of it sounded very similar to me. Housequake was fun.

Prince's body of work sure does perplex me. This dude felt as if he was a creative music God, and yet released a double album hear with the first half being chud. Come at me with the "raw" "stripped down" "acoustic" "rootsy" nonsense. But this man fucking shredded, and was a pop rock icon and disc 1 was his best acoustic writing. 2/10. The real meat and potatoes here in my opinion is side 2. Perfect prince album, tight, groovy, unique, sexy and fun. Beautifully sounding and produced at an excellent caliber for 1987. But it shows his true intentions to write a pop masterpiece like purple rain. 7/10. Ill split the difference and give it 3 stars. Because all in all im super partial to his guitar god era in the late 70's.

Prince is still just not quite for me. I want more punch somehow.

point2.

I didn't love this one and wanted to give it a 2 but there were a couple really good songs that brought it up to a 3 for me.

Enjoyable

It was an enjoyable listen, but probably not one I’ll revisit. I enjoyed the groove and the overall vibe. Some melodies were a but repetitive and some songs dragged on a bit long but overall a good start.

Ah, Prince. Love that smooth voice. Most of the album went along swimmingly. A bit same-y at times, but still a nice listen. A couple songs dragged a bit, like It and The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker. Cross was some strange Jesus song. It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night was nice, but went on for too long. Starfish And Coffee was a ton of fun, great song. And oh boy, If I Was Your Girlfriend was, um, pretty steamy. Prince evokes quite the imagery in that one. Most of the songs average a 3, +1 for Prince, but -1 for the length. Scaling back a bit would have helped a lot, this could have been two 4 star albums. Best song: Starfish And Coffee

This is a really uneven album. There is some amazing music on here, e.g., Sign O' The Times, parts of Play In The Sunshine, Housequake, Starfish and Coffee, U Got The Look, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. But then there's a lot of stuff that only ends up on an album when people are afraid to say "No" to you. 3 stars.

Not his best work

It’s alright, there are certainly better Prince albums though

very hype! not bad really.

Yep. This is what Prince sounds like.

Honestly I expected a little more from this album. There’s no denying his unique talent and everything and it was good but it just felt like something was missing.

I feel like Prince was simultaneously the most over-rated and under-utilized (or mis-utilized?) musician of my generation. If only this album were recorded in a way that the album cover seems to (mis)represent...I don't really love any of his studio albums (Purple Rain comes close), yet I can't think of a live video/concert I've seen of his that wasn't everything that's awesome about live music/musicianship. Ironically it was probably a <ahem> sign of the times using that shitty drum machine which not only sounds crappy and dated but was *boring AF* - ok Prince you perfectionist, why didn't you at least just play the actual drums yourself on every song?? Frustrating because this is close to being excellent (if not just too goddamn long - double albums that don't feel too long are maybe once per decade events, and this wasn't it) - feels like most of these songs and this album as a whole could have been awesome with an outside producer/voice - someone to tell him to give this more of an organic feel. Maybe even a band? Like...The Revolution? I can't escape the 80s on this one and the further we all get from the 80s the more I really hate that generic "80s sound." I'm unfair here - maybe I should be judging it on what it is and not what it isn't, but it's not easy. There's a lot of diversity in arrangement but each time I hear that coffee can drum sound or very closeted/canned keyboard sound or that pitched-up "alter-ego voice" it brings me back to frustration. I'm ripping on this much more than maybe it deserves because I just wanted this to groove more. And it almost gets there - the album closes pretty well - the individual highlight is that latter-part guitar almost-out-of-place guitar solo on "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" - it has a very Stonesy/Can't You Hear Me Knockin' feel to it ... then the following song "The Cross" has a real raw emotional feel to it - dammit, why wasn't this all over the record!? I'm repeating myself here so in sum: it's not bad and it's hugely ambitious, but it's not altogether good either and what's worst is that it could/should have been so much better as a 10 song album by a Prince-led BAND co-written (or at least co-produced) by others. 5/10 3 stars.

some strong tracks (title track, the cross, adore) but a lot of fillers

It's Prince. It's like spring weather in England. If you don't like it, wait five minutes. This isn't my favorite Prince album, but it's still worth a listen. It's mildly dated, but what the hell, it's still Prince. I don't have a great deal to add, not a lot stood out, songwise. A perfectly cromulant time.

FAVO: Sign o the times, starfish and coffee, Ic ould never take the place of your man, The Cross, Adore

I've always liked Prince but guess that's because of awareness of a limited selection of great hits. This double album, starting off with a tremendous tune, slowly evaporated my enthusiasm with mediocre works, sorry to say.

"It" by Stephen King was released the year before, so there were two great "It" entities in consecutive years. That's about it though. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. It's mid-tier music by someone who should be significantly better than this. Favorite Track: "It".

Its good but not my style and definitely not the phase I'm in now *rating is for me, not necessarily the quality of the album* Didn't put any songs on the repeat playlist

This isn't bad, because there is no such thing as a bad Prince album. He is Prince. The Purple One. His worst albums are still bops that you can dance to. However, I am slightly spoiled. My first Prince albums were Purple Rain and Batman, two of his undisputed masterpieces. And this isn't QUITE as good as those two, I'm afraid.

The handful of songs that are really good still suffer from stripped down 80s synths and drum machines.

Prince is one of those artists I’ve always wanted to like more than I actually do. For whatever reason, his music just never hits me the same way it seems to hit other people. Like most of his albums, this one felt pretty middle of the road to me, there’s definitely some strong elements scattered throughout, but overall, it didn’t leave much of an impact. It’s not bad by any means, just not something I find myself connecting with the way others seem to.

J - 3/5 Best Track - "U Got The Look" F - DNL

It wasn't that awesome but I mean I can't give less than three stars to a man who wears eyeliner

tiene alguna cancion chula pero no me parece de lo mejor de prince

Live albums are problematic. If you are not there, the crowd participation, the weird sound issues, the odd riffs and mishmashes can be a bit jarring. There are nearly always flashes of brilliance, and it helps massively if you are watching it happen on video. If you are not, or only intermittently... Some live albums are amazing instant classics. Some struggle with any and all the things I spoke of. If I had been at this concert I would have been amazed, mesmerized, stellar! But I was not. Frankly I would have preferred a studio album in this case.

First things first. Dear you tube, an album (musically) is a collection of tracks that is 40-45 minutes long, and will fit nicely on one side of a C90 tape. It is NOT 92 tracks and 5 hours long. Even if you do call it the Super Deluxe version. So having listened to the first 45 mins, it was actually better than I expected. In that it wasn't bad. I think I enjoyed it more than 1999, but that's about the best I can say probably the best way to give my opinion is to score it because from what I have written here I would expect a 2 but this is definitely a 3

Never liked Prince, he was too slimy for my liking. I dismissed this when it was first released, but it more enjoyable than I expected it to be. He was so talented being able to play so many instruments, however its just a shame he wasn't as talented in keeping his medicine cabinet in order. With that amount of stuff he could have written some fantastic psychedelia. But he didn't. Shame.

nice Prince album. A bit too long tough. and some songs haven't aged great especially the mixing. 7/10 fav songs : If I was your Girlfriend & Adore

I didn't really get into this one.

Not as cohesive as Purple Rain (to be fair, the latter was essentially a movie), so interesting, usually good, but some of these things are not like the other.

Previously rated: Purple Rain (4/5) 1999 (3/5) ********************* I've heard the album once before, plus Apple Music likes to push tracks from it. It's usually hailed as a masterpiece, but I don't get it. It sounds mediocre and very dated to me. It's less horny and more religious than the other two I've rated, but still kind of uncomfortable to listen to. The repetitive beats and his vocal fry get on my nerves. U Got The Look is admittedly good thanks to the ladies. I'm not sure I want to know what Starfish And Coffee is about. All in all, I'm giving this barely a 3/5 and the lesser of the three Prince albums I've gotten.

I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man is fire

ehhhh I've had better prince songs and albums. another 2.5 I think if it was an option

Prince is undoubtedly one of the most talented artist of modern times (his guitar playing being criminally underrated). He blends jazz, rock n roll, funk, rnb, soul, pop, and even hip-hop into his seemingly endless catalogue of work. This album is a testament to his talent and vision but should have been just one disc, there is so much filler in here that it becomes a bit tiresome. The peaks of this album are great, and the valleys are still better than what most artist will ever accomplish, the the 2 don't blend well. All that to say that I love Prince and put him towards (if not) the top of almost any musical list, but this album is not his best showing, and I think one of the great things about Prince is not that his albums are the greatest thing, but his catalogue is damn near unmatched. He made so much music, that along the way he made a few misses amongst all his hits. He is kind of the Brett Favre of music, a ton of interceptions and fumbles along the way but was amazing to watch play. That is Prince, maybe not as many turnovers as Favre though lol. I do enjoy this album nonetheless and is better than at least half that album I have listened to so far on this list, just not Prince Rogers Nelson's best showing. 6.9/10 107/1001

My first reaction when I saw this album as the pick of today was a bit of fear. My experience with Prince is basically nonexistent so I didn't know what to expect from him. The reason behind of being afraid of not liking his highly regarded music, just for the fact that he is a pop artist from the 80's. And I have my reason to be afraid of liking 80's pop music, since my experience with this style throughout this list was not very pleasent, to say the least. So, I've listented to this album twice, and I can agree with the fact that this man was incredible talented and creative, and with a very peculiar sound and style. Nevertheless, I can't say that I connected with this album, and its length didn't help. I will give him points thanks to how different he sounds from other artists from this time though.

Unpopular opinion: Prince is fine. Maybe it’s just me and I’m not partial to 80s pop guitar, too many synths, but I just don’t get it.

Some songs are very good but there are so many that it’s hard to keep same quality

Man was this guy horny. Catchy production and interesting musical ideas throughout. No standout tracks for me, they were all about a 6.5-7/10

Not what I expected from a Prince album, it sounded very experimental, like a patchwork of different genres. Overall I had a good time listening to this, but I am not the biggest fan either.

Try as I might, I just can’t seem to like Prince more than 3 stars :-(

It's good. It's not really my thing though. I can tell it's probably brilliant, but my heart doesn't want to know.

52/1001. I do own many Prince LPs, but for some reason have missed this. We'll the catalog is quite immense, right? And with that comes maybe the weakness - no matter how genius one might be, there is no way all the material can be great. For me the music sounds will crafted and I like the way he turns positive what ever limitations there are e.g. in the choice of instrumentation, and also that he doesn't want to let the listener gwt out too easily. But then the problem is that are there any hits, good tunes, memorable songs? Well some, but others just go in one war and out the other, the simplicity-complexity craft not fitting to your brain cells and their patterns. Which is also a positive thing: I'm sure you can listen to this album (as other Prince albums as well) over and over again and discover new things, new favorites, songs you didn't remember were in it. A 3 or 4? I think there will be more Prince here that I'm more familiar of, so only a three here - I didn't discover nothing new really about the man, the myth - the legend.

I like Prince, don't get me wrong, but this album as a whole didn't do it for me. It kinda felt sleepy, not a lot of energy or ear-catching music going on here. There were a few songs on disc 2 that I was enjoying, but nothing that completely captured my focus and made me go "wow". Sorry 😞

Was really excited to dive into icon Prince (never have before)! Not entirely my vibe, but happy I listened through his top album. I liked a few songs, but they're not ones I could see myself going out of the way for moving forward. Glad to know more of his discography now beyond Purple Rain lol

Kind of a long album that all blurred together for me. Not particularly my cup of tea. My mom really likes prince so I tried to be especially interested but felt very middle of the road to me for this most part.

Most songs aren't my jam (I wouldn't choose love or religious songs), but I can appreciate the musicality. I was glad when the album was over.

Enjoyable funk for the background

I feel like most of it is dated but their are some great baselines, I feel like “ if I was your gf” as well as an earlier song that I can’t remember the name of can still suffice as a “hit” in today’s era.

some songs too long

I've never listened to a Prince album before and I only know the hits, so I was surprised at the diversity in his vocals and the range of topics - it wasn't all fun sexy times like I expected. The Cross was a standout. This was good and I understand why it's here; I'm just not totally sold on revisiting.

Some of it was good. Some of it was OK. All of it was too long. Prince just never really hooks us in.

bad prince is still ok prince

There’s some excellent songs on this album, Housequake especially, I really like what Prince does with funk. I completely understand why this album is beloved and potentially ranked over Purple Rain, it’s absolutely ambitious. I was questioning myself, I gave it another couple listens but just can’t bring myself to give it a 4 and that’s just personal preference. When Prince leans funk and rock I really like this album but when it sways to the R&B I just trail off a bit. Slow Love for example, I really don’t care for this, maybe I need to be in the literal moment but even then, I think I’d giggle because it’s too on the nose. Either way good album with a bit of bloat for me. I get why it’s loved, just not loved by me. 3 stars

First couple songs completely bored me and I almost quit early. I'm glad I stuck it out as there were some pretty decent tracks here.

I was excited to listen to this as Prince is an epic artist with hugh talent with well known tracks. I was also concious that I have never actively chosen to listen to Prince. Probably as much of his style links to genres I dont naturally gravitate towards (He blends just about all of them from what I can tell). Sadly, not a revelation for me and won't be rushing to change my habits having listened to this. It's a strange collection of sounds and styles. I just felt myself ebb and flow with my enjoyment level. Ultimately many tracks dont inspire much in me and I found it frustrating that I just found the solos and odd diversions interesting. I do think I will let a bit more Prince in to my music as some interesting stuff amongst the momumental musicmanship peacocking thats on display in the most insane way with Prince. Hes like a broken tap for me (the water being pure genius being my analogy and think of me as an american prisoner being water boarded then dropping the sink on my head).

De eerste helft voelde ik hem nog niet zo, maar de tweede helft was dikke prima.

Prince is excellent. This album isn't my fave.

Listens: 1.5 Standout tracks: Starfish and Coffee, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Housequake Second Prince album so far, with the other being Purple Rain. It's still not clicking for me. There's clearly talent here, I do enjoy some specific songs, and he's pouring his soul into the music, but overall I'm still not sure it's for me. It's certainly not something I'm going out of my way to listen to As far as the music is concerned, there's a mix of genres going on: soul, rock and roll, funk, some rock ballads, pop music. Even with all the different genres, there's still an underlying consistency of the album shining through. There are themes of love and passion, gender identity, drugs use and sickness, parties and partying. It's definitely a product of the 80s for sure. 3

I don’t feel like this album is as strong as other Prince albums. May because I got Purple Rain before this one and Purple Rain is a masterpiece.

Funky, but none of the tracks really stood out for me on this one.

There was a whole lot to love in this record. There is a variety of tracks ranging from R&B, funk, soul and rock. Highlights on this record for me were the slow songs and more R&B-oriented songs. I also found "Housequake" as a pleasant surprise; I was not expecting a boom bap track in here. A lowlight that I found on this record was the use of those '80s synths. Those synths are just not for me. Favourite Track(s): Starfish and Coffee, Slow Love Least Favourite Track(s): It, Hot Thing

Je reconnais des qualités à l'album mais j'ai pas trop accroché honnêtement.

Standout Songs: Play In The Sunshine Starfish and Coffee Strange Relationship It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night An okay album, but not Prince’s best work. A lot of the songs were very sexual and I’m not really into that groove, but at least it had a good beat throughout.

I liked this album. I didn’t *love* this album. “Adore” is the best track.

Not a big Prince fanboy, but this record was good. Much less painfully 80s than some of his other recordings. Just weird enough to be interesting, some great kinky lyrics, and every song has a new flavor. I’m not sure what’s going on in “If I Was Your Girlfriend” but I like it.

It is impossible to underestimate Prince's ability as a multi-instrumentalist and producer. He also wrote and recorded some amzing songs, not just for himself but for other artists too. So why do I find it so hard to get into any of his albums? This is probably the closest I'll get to liking one of his long players, and the first half really does showcase the best of his many talents - the rest is just a bit "meh", as the cool kids say. Good album, make no mistake, just not as consistently good or as groundbreaking as some might have you believe.

Heard it before. It's a really good album although a bit too long. What I find hilarious is that my favourite song from the album (Strange Relationship) is the least streamed one 3/5

Highlight: Slow Love. Decent album by the legendary Prince, but a little long - 3.5 but rounding down... I lost steam near the end.

High 3 Very good album, but could be 1h05 instead of 1h19

The Cross is a good song but most of this album just felt cheesy to me. There are a few other songs that I enjoyed and then a lot of songs where either the lyrics were really cringey or the production was not to my taste. Some individual songs to revisit, but this is not an album I will come back to. Fav song: The Cross Least fav: Hot Thing

Was expecting more of this album honestly. I get that they all can’t be purple rain but for someone who people say is the greatest musician there was it falls a bit flat for me. Also too horny at times. Specific rating 3.5 Fav song- house quake Least fav- if I was your girlfriend

Some really incredible and enjoyable bits of music surrounded by some cringe lyrics and a lot of overpowering annoying fake drum sounds. A couple of the songs that I really loved were ruined by going on too long. (Absolutely loved I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man and then it kept going for three and a half extra minutes after it should have finished.) Favourite: The Cross Least: Starfish and Coffee

очень длинные гм инструментальные проигрыши и сложно представить кто поёт временами, в целом вроде не скучно но настолько мимо меня…

Prince falls into a rare group of musicians, dating back to Franz Liszt, people who are more famous as people and performers than as musicians. Other notables are Bjork, the Grateful Dead, and Liberace. I could not name more than a song by any of them, but I know who they are and that people like them. Prince I at least know a few more songs by. Giving an album a real listen, I don't get it. I don't hate it, but it's not really working. Michael Jackson is boring to me in a similar way.

he definitely has better albums, this was fine though

It was interesting reading about his life and skills as a musician. Less interesting to listen to the album.

I know this album is considered a masterpiece, but I'm struggling to see why. Isn't "Purple Rain" better?

In typical double album fashion, this had a handful of good songs and the rest was mediocre. His music with The Revolution was definitely better.

There's some good tunes on here, but also quite a few that don't do much for me.

Sign 'O' The Times - I like the beat of this song, but it's a little bit boring. I wasnt in love with the melody. Play In the Sunshine - I really like this song it's upbeat, sunny, and reminds me of the beatles in a weird way. It's perfect for beach days. I wish there was a bit more instrumentation in his songs. They are very rhythm focused which I like but I wish the music backed that up more. I like this song a lot tho. The bridge is amazing. Its a lot of cheering. A lot of electric guitar, clapping, etc. House Quake - Very 80s sounding which I like but I dont like how Michael Jackson this one sounds. The beat is always a little too loud imo but again, super fun and upbeat Im just being very nitpicky. It's a bit repetitive. Im never in love with Prince's melodies. He really thrives in rhythm. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker - not a big fan of this one. its a bit boring and the loud strummy, vibrating, electric but not plugged in bass hurts my ears. It - big fan of this one. id put it on for late night driving. i love the layered vocals and the shiny shimmery notes behind the melody. I like the music outro but I wish it was shorter. Starfish and Coffee - I LOVE THIS ONE. THE BEAT IS SO GOOD. THE LYRICS. THE MELODY. IT MAKES ME FEEL HOPEFUL. THE VOCALS. Slow Love - Im not a huge fan of slow songs but this one is really pretty. Theres either sax or brass in it, which immediately makes any song better. It's giving very cinematic and I love a cinematic song. It's very soulful and jazzy. Big fan. Hot Thing - didnt love. no notes honestly kinda boring. Forever in Life - Also boring. No melody. Just a beat. U got the look - I like this one a bit more than the others but not a fav. I like the guitar part its very electric. I like the melody more but im not a fan of the chorus. If I was your girlfriend - Prince's voice really shines here. It sounds like classic 90s rnb which isnt my favorite, but its Prince you know. Sounds amazing. I love the syncopation in this with the background vocals. It's very staccato and bouncy which I like. This is a big favorite actually. I like the effects on his voice as well. Almost like a phone call but very subtle. Strange Relationship - I lOVE this one. The starting driving beat is so good and strong. I could never take the place of your man - this song is so funny and lowkey kinda country sounding. it has a little twang and i love it. this one is so good its upbeat its dancey. top three for sure. THE CHORUS. oh im so obsessed with this one. the country layered vocals? its so good. I dont love the random music interlude in the middle. Its a lot different than the main vibe / beginning vibe of the song. In general, I dont like songs that do this. The Cross - I love the focus on the drum in this song. Its a little slow for me. I wouldnt put it on to listen to but its very pretty. It's a bit too slow for me. But I love the marching band vibe. It picks up which is nice and sounds good but a little too grungey for me. It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night - This one is so fun! Ive been dancing the whole time. Sounds like the outro to a movie or a concert where you're dancing the whole way out. Big fan of this one. Adore - A little slow for me. Giving classic rnb that i dont love

Great musician, composer, arranger. But, this is mostly tedious. And drum machines are like fingernails on a blackboard to me. A few listenable songs is the most I can say.

A little long but an interesting, eclectic collection.

Too long and too random. Too much use of the drum machine which makes it sound very dated.

Fun listen. I went into this not being the biggest Prince fan, but came out with a new appreciation for his music. Although not all the tracks were hits for me, his wide stylistic range on this album made for something that I’m sure anyone can find joy in.

ich finds kuul! het nice rhythme debi:) mängisch sind d songs aber astrengend.. finds nöd übermässig guet und s isch eif z lang.. und mir fallt wieder mal uf, dasi em album grundsätzlich offener entgegetritt, wenn d künstler:in bekannt isch..

Pretty good Prince album.

Yeah, it’s good, it’s very funky and has some really interesting bits in

Fengende

[7/10]

Pretty good, I preferred the disc 2 of the album.

yknow aside from the starfish it's a pretty unremarkable breakfast

So ridiculously 80s, would need another listen through to appreciate better. 'The Cross' jumped out at me, could be because I was getting used to the 80s vibe by then.

It's Prince. Soulful, groovy, funky, but at the end of the day, it's just pop.

The album wasn't as good as I had hoped, but I appreciate Prince's talent.

Not the best Prince album.

Soulful and emotional, the production is pure Prince. However, I can't help but feel like some of the songs should have been cut from the final product... methinks it overstayed its welcome just a bit.

This a double album from Prince, and there is but one song here that I’ve heard previously. Overall it’s a good album with a variety of rock/funk/soul/jazz. Nothing here that I’m looking forward to hearing again though.

Practically modern after those last few albums! Well, the sound is extremely of-the-time(80)s, but the production feels more modern. And the depressing lyrics to 'Sign o' the Times', of course. A double album with no hits on it, though... that's rough. 'Housequake' feels kinda like a Talking Heads parody. 'Starfish and Coffee' is very cute. I'm not generally a fan of the "slow jams about banging" genre, but among them, 'Slow Love' is pretty good. Also, the lyric "your face is jammin'/your body's heck-a-slammin'/if love is good, let's get to rammin'" in 'U Got The Look' has a certain charm - maybe I should use that when I teach about valid and invalid arguments (maybe not). It occurs to me that Prince does a lot of different little voices for different songs, which is fun. Some gender stuff going on. 'I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man' is a mild bop (with the good line "she knew he was gone to stay"). 'The Cross' is apt for this Good Friday/Easter weekend, and also pretty good. I dunno, feels like a 3 to me, albeit a good 3. Sorry Prince! You seem cool!

C'est groovy, ça s'écoute bien, mais pas très memorable

Funky but not super memorable.

This is 80 minutes long and didn't get all too into it. In the album's defense, there are some good tracks here and giving it more time than just 1 day will definitely make me like this album more.

Tiene un par de canciones que está buena. Me gusta la onda pero pierde la gracia rápido.

Honestly, a little surprised at this one. From such a beloved figure I guess I expected more. I don't think it's bad by any means, of course. Funky and mostly upbeat. Something to bob your head to and groove a bit. The Cross is a definite standout, and not in a good way. Some people try to say that it isn't just a religious song, but those people are kidding themselves. Extremely heavy handed "God will fix your problems" messaging. "Don't die without knowing the cross" is an abysmal way to go about writing a song about people who are dealing with REAL hardship. Religion is like a crutch for people who are healthy. Ditch it and you'll go much farther, much quicker. Prince is an icon but after listening to this album I'm not completely sure why. It's very 80's but not in a way that lasts into present day. Dated lyrics all throughout. The drum machine is obvious and repetitive. Wonderful voice, very artistic. He had a vision and I respect that

This is my first time properly listening to Prince. Always heard good things, and there's definitely some cool ideas here, but I experienced a really weird thing with this one, where the production made me want to turn it up louder, but then it was too loud. I couldn't find the 'right volume'. I think it's because I was listening on Spotify web player which doesn't normalize the volume, and I guess this record must be all over the place dynamics-wise. Anyway, I digress. Favourite tracks: Sign 'O' the Times, Housequake, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Starfish and Coffee.

I've never understood Prince. Incredible musician, but I just have never vibed with his music. This deserves a higher rating, but I need to be honest on where it sits for me

Sofre o mal de qualquer disco duplo em sua falta de coesão, mas possui momentos bons

Hmm. I was surprised when I didn’t particularly enjoy “1999,” and I thought maybe that was a one-off, but I wasn’t too enthusiastic about this album, either. Not bad, but aside from a few tracks, it didn’t hold my interest much. Favorite: It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night

Just not my favorite from Prince. It’s ok.

Barely scraping a 3 here. I considered myself a fan of office based on his hits, but this made me like him less.

Kakkoslevyllä ei ole rakennetta, mutta sillä on hyvä biisi If I was your girlfriend. Vahva kakkonen silti, lauluäänen vuoksi.

Artistilla on kaikki niin tip top, että hänen sex appeal:insä jää minun näkökulmastani vähäiseksi. Levylle koottu musiikki on myös yksinkertaisesti vanhentuneen kuuloista: esim. Play in the Sunshinen koukku jää mölisevän synan jalkoihin. Lisäksi on oireellista, että Princestä puhuttaessa nostetaan ensimmäisenä esiin hänen "lahjakkuutensa". Eikä hän sitten tehnyt hyviä BIISEJÄ? No, vaikka levyllä on filleriä ja kaikenlaista fiilistelyä, kyllä hän kovia kappaleitakin teki, ja esimerkiksi If I Was Your Girlfriend ja avausraita ovat parhaasta päästä.

This type of Prince just doesn't resonate with me as much as I would hope it to. Maybe I need to give it more listens. 2.5/5

I liked it to some degree, but the musical genre is not really for me.

Not a very good recording which makes the album flat and boring.

Pretty much all Prince is great Prince, and this is like twice the Prince. It’s like two Princes but the music is significantly better.

I wanted to like this, but it just felt tedious by the end.

Really good when it's good but too long and kinda outstays its welcome. I enjoyed myself, but I wasn't sorry when it ended.

I enjoyed listening to this album because the beat is very catchy. I also like the style of music.

The cover looks really messy. "U Got Look" was good. I liked the drums, the singing voice was interesting. But I thought the lyrics were good. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" had an interesting start. I find it unnatural that his voice sounds like a girl's voice. I did think the lyrics were good. I would recommend this album.

I know we’re supposed to be in awe of Prince and he does have swagger and cool funk arrangements but somehow it didn’t resonate with me. Perhaps it’s the drums which are of their time and detracting from the whole. A guilty 3.

Pretty good. Some of the grooves are really well played and funky. 3.5/5 Might listen again

p567. 1987. 3 stars. As with all double albums, it's self indulgent, flabby and packed with filler - no-one needs a 9 minute live track. Bit of a shame really, because when it's good it's brilliant. A bit of judicious editing and this would be an easy 5.

I was pretty excited to listen to this one as I’ve never heard sat down and listened to it from beginning to end. To be honest even though there’s some masterful playing on here, a lot of the funk stuff just wasn’t for me Favorite tracks were title track, play in the sunshine and I could never take the place of your man.

Music interesting. Lyrics not that much.

80s as hell and longer than I had the tolerance for, but not a bad listen by any means.

I like most songs here, but I can't say I love any of them. Prince is a good vocalist, and the production is great. But the songs are too empty and drawn out. It also doesn't justify its length. I would've preferred to have less but more dense and less monotonous songs.

Recht typischer Prince Sound. Für mich keines seiner Highlights. 3/5

Eh... not bad, but I don't really see what the hype is about. I'd probably have a different opinion if I'd heard it in the 80's and had feelings of nostalgia for it. 3/5

Many listens through and I still don't feel like I have fully sussed this one out. Might need to keep going back to it, as I think it might end up a 4... Double albums are tough to fully digest.

Never listened to a whole album by him. There’s some good stuff on here without doubt but being a double there’s some things that are definitely filler. Wide range of styles explored which makes it interesting. Definitely worth a listen

I need to spend more time with the Prince catelog.

Funk, soul, and pop - Pretty long album - Some songs are pretty good, but some are just average

Not my style. Some good songs. Best track: It's gonna be a beautiful night

Prince isn't really my thing but I didn't mind the length of this one.

this is a lot of prince at once but it's without a doubt the best double album we've had in this exercise so far

A serviceable Prince album. For a double album, not too draggy. A few weird ramblers but also a few really fun grooves. 2.5

heard before 3/5

Middling Prince album

So sexy

Prince

High energy record. Lots of cool baselines and guitar parts. I think based on this album, a Prince concert would be a lot of fun.

I go super back and forth on this. Its Prince and he is really good and songs like It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night just hit really well. I also think his sexy songs are just great. The ones that fall short are the ones where he is talking about things outside of sex, which is awful to say because he is allowed to talk about other things, but he just doesn't do it as well. I hate giving Prince a 3 because some of the songs are definitely 5's but some just seem almost amateur. Sorry Prince, but this was not my favorite of yours.

The Prince-album which changes everything. Prince started with this to become a mega rock star.

Still sounds progressive today. Political, funky, and innovative.

Fun to listen to, some creepy lyrics though, less hits than Purple rain which I got a while ago

It’s good. And after having listened three times in a row, I can also say that there are some memorable bangers on here, but I still struggle with remembering them all and telling them apart. Opening track, Housequake, Starfish and Coffee and The Cross stand out

Strong start, there were some great songs I added to my playlist such as "Housequake" and "Play in the Sunshine", I lost interest tho when it transitioned into the more mellow and slow songs. Prince has an amazing and iconic voice that carry those songs tho, so even though I got a bit bored I appreciated his voice all through the rest of the album.

I just can't stand Prince's voice. Grating to me, but not bad music.

Prince seems to love taking a million ideas that fuse funk, pop, r&b, soul, rock, and a tad of psychedelia into a long album. A long album that says the world sucks, so let’s dance and fuck. Danceable, silly, groovy, catchy, conscious, sexy…though I prefer the fun tracks to the sex jams, which makes this so-so for me. He has an interesting blend of arrangements - some very sparse outside of vocals and rhythm, while others are busier and more elaborate, some feeling like a party. It started off with a few strong tracks and then just kinda coasted ok-to-boring with a few other good tracks sprinkled in. I was very surprised that he mentioned ham at least twice in this album. This project so far has made me realize that I respect Prince’s talent and vision, but the music just doesn’t quite do it for me. If he leaned into and sustained some more of his weirder musical fringes, I’d dig him more I suspect.

Ah, Prince... without a doubt a musical genius, an exceptional multi-instrumentalist and guitar virtuoso, a top-notch composer, arranger and singer, and unquestionably one of the (arguably THE) iconic pop stars of the 1980s and beyond. And yet I find myself having trouble getting into his music. I could easily name probably a dozen (maybe more) songs of his that I consider absolute timeless masterpieces and that I have been playing in heavy rotation for decades now. However, when it comes to his albums, it's a different story for me. With the notable exception of Purple Rain (which truly is an all-killer-no-filler disc), I have yet to discover a Prince record that I enjoy listening to from beginning to end. Lots of people put SotT in that same tier, or have it ranked even higher. It's widely considered his crowning musical achievement. Some even see it as the best (double) album of the 80s. Somehow, I just don't hear it. There are some amazing tracks (I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man is the highlight for me), but to my ears there's also a bunch of filler. Like so many other double albums, in my view this one would have benefited from some editing and would have been a stronger album as a single record.

some fun moments but overall meh

Not my favorite Prince album, but good nonetheless.

Diverse and high-concept, with a few bangers that feel innovative even now (If I Was Your Girlfriend). Also a famous use of the Linn drum. I feel I'll never quite fully get it without having lived through the 80s

pretty good. little hard to get over the dated drum sound, but a few songs grabbed me

Favorite tracks were The Ballad of Dorothy Parker and Adore.

You probably had to be there to get it, but not bad.

This was what I expected from Prince. It was fine to listen to, but I wouldn't go out of my way to ever purposely listen to it again. Prince is just a weird cat and that is reflected in the music.

I like that this album addresses the issues of the time. However, it's not my favorite album. It doesn't hook in the way the others do.

disco pop no acaba de ser mucho mi estilo

A tough album for me to rate. On one hand, I have an immense respect for Prince's musical and songwriting ability. And I did enjoy a few of the songs a lot. But his style does not click with me at all. I find it decent at best, and just overall not my thing. I think I would have like the album more if it was just the second record - I didn't like anything at all from the A & B sides. Top tracks: U Got That Look, The Cross, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night

The drum machine sounds really bad here. Prince's output really seems to lose steam around this point in his discography. Sign 'O' The Times appears to rely on a "chill vibe" with its artificial percussion, prominent bass/synth lines, and nods to the outdated disco genre – but the percussion ends up being annoying and repetitive rather than smooth. In fact, the biggest problem with this record is that, despite every instrument technically being played well, the ear-catching compositional elements are missing entirely. That is, there are pretty much no melodies I enjoyed. In the entire album. On any instrument. This made it pretty tough to enjoy most tracks. They're difficult to sing or hum along to, and rely more on showmanship and flourishy vocal/synth lines rather than anything simple, concrete, and infectious. The track Starfish and Coffee is a major exception to these complaints, having a good melody and legitimately fun, groovy backing instrumental. Slow Love is also notable for its soft, lilting guitar work, nice backing vocals, and use of a real acoustic drum kit. The title track/album opener is the best instance of a song sounding fairly good despite all the problems mentioned above, probably because of Prince's good vocal delivery. His voice doesn't go weirdly off the rails like some of the more questionable tracks (Housequake, It, U Got the Look), but instead is smooth, steady, and to the point. Props. 3/5 Key tracks: Sign 'O' the Times, Starfish and Coffee, Slow Love, Adore

Purple Rain is one of my all-time favorite albums. This follow-up was a great disappointment.

Nothing good, nothing bad, prince has probably got better stuff to look forward to

Ja versteh ich, aber fühl ich zu wenig

Good album? Yes. 100 Greatest of all time? Hard pass. Mot even the best Prince album

3.5 - it was good, but I didn't enjoy it IN MY SOUL which was disappointing :( Stand out tracks: - Sign O' The Times 5/5 - one of my favourite songs of all time, absolutely beautiful - Strange Relationship 4/5

I won’t even begin to try to understand the comparisons to Purple Rain, it’s not even in the same stratosphere. I struggled with this one, I’ll give it the round up to a 3, just for benefit of the doubt that I am missing something but I don’t get it. 2.5/5

Man, maybe I’m just not cool enough or don’t have enough soul to love this…not my favorite prince work. The song I prob liked the most was I could never take the place of your man which is prob the most generic pop. I’m ashamed of myself.

Another familiar album of which I've never done a listen through. I'm beginning to think that music TV's might've done me a major disservice between late 80's and early 90's. I know several songs off the album, few enough to be quite fed up with them. Titular track doesn't sound what I remember it sounding like, I'm assuming the blame on the video for that. I was expecting a lot more funk and bluesy rock bits, but it was mostly simple pop music. Most of the musically interesting stuff for me was happening with the vocals, not the guitar or groovy basslines etc. which was the expectation. I'm not sure if I'm disappointed or not, since it sort of fulfilled the expectations I had based on the video tracks. I wanted the rest of the album to be more ambitious music, filled with funk and soul, but sadly it was not.

Found myself pretty bored through the first five or six songs, but then a few leaned in a different direction like I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man and I enjoyed those.

Helt ok, men inte helt min kopp te. 5/10

Not his best

3.5/5 Some fun little ditties on here. I was torn on 3-4 stars but ultimately there's a fair amount of filler/miss tracks for me - a common affliction for double albums. Reading the wiki for this albums prince was planning on releasing this as a triple album(!) until the studio stepped in.

Soft Prince album, not my style

A few great songs, a lot of filler and inconsistent production quality throughout. Love the artist but not so much this particular overall lengthy double album.

It’s fun and weird, but not everything works. There’s a George Clinton vibe in some spots, but it’s more scattered. You can tell there’s a lot of creativity here, even if it feels like too much at times.

It's Prince, it's obviously good, but stylistically not my cup of tea. 3/5

This is for sure a unique album by an extremely creative artist. However it’s a bit hit or miss for me.

Prince is Prince really - some serious funk, some hella weird lyrics and overall a disjointed feel across the album

Interesting use of vocal harmonies, w 80s synth drums. Lots of instruments. Overall not styles I seek out, but can't deny the talent, creativity, and how this album captures and defined 80s sound. Didn't hear any single song i wanted to hear again immediately tho.

Funky and the classic Prince sound. Probably not one I’d listen to often but I appreciate it for what it is!

Some good things - mostly not for me.

Some good moments throughout, but ultimately not my prefered style, and I think it is too long and sprawling, with too many ups and downs. 3.5 stars

3 estrelas

Big album, which teased and ultimately promised me more than it delivered. Lots of different genres provide influence here, and there's diversity in terms of tempo and overall vibes. I did like the funk sound on tracks like Housequake. The chilled out ballad Slow Love works for me and my favorite track on the second half was probably The Cross. Some of the lyrical themes are a bit dated (eg, Hot Thing). Maybe at nearly 90 minutes long it's just too dense to absorb quickly, but I'm left wanting more.

Was pretty mediocre. If it were another artist I'd probably give it a 2.

Much prefer this to 1999 - more poppy/hip hoppy less funk and slap bass. Only managed one and a half listens as its another effin double album so this is only my initial view (although I doubt I will listen again to form a more fuller view). The over reliance on drum machines dates it and makes it feel disposable. A few zingers - Sign of the Times, U Got the Look and I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man but quite a lot of filler.

It’s prince so it’s solid, but nothing really grabbing me.

A lot of the drum beats and synth noises are too processed-sounding. Not too unsimilar from some 80s's MJ. Slow Love is a pretty good song with nice sax. If I Was Your Girlfriend was weird. I Could Take The Place of Your Man is a pleasant almost alt rock song that doesn't fit the rest of the album's vibe. The Cross is a quite good song, as is It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night which has a recognizable part at 3:50 and nice instrumentation. R&B/soul/funk/rock album. Started off slow but ended strong. Pretty good.

Favorite Track: Housequake

Groovy, funky but no real bangers (for me).

Pretty good. Creative. Imaginative.

Solid.

Out of the three Prince albums this is the best on the list, which is not saying a whole lot. He has some good songs here, but a lot our just overkill on the sex language.

I only ever listened to 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, the Batman soundtrack. While those are outstanding, this was just meh. Three just because it's Prince.

I always struggle with Prince, I think he is / was an amazing musician, but I didn't always like his style, a lot of 80s synth is not my thing. As a guitar player and icon I think he is truly one of the all time greats. Stand out track: - Play in the sunshine - The ballad of Dorothy Parker - Slow love - Hot thing - Adore

Way more honkey tonk than I expected?! So good though

A lot, That is probably my takeaway from this album. Lots of ideas and different styles, some I liked, others not so much. While I probably wont listen to the whole album again I'm definitely listening a couple of songs again. I really enjoyed the title track and "The ballad of Dorothy Parker". Personally I love the use of the 80's sounding drums and synths. Especially because they are accompanied by great sounding bass and guitar. Also a big fan of all the instrumental breakdowns.

Decent

This is...a lot. Highlights: "Sign o' the Times" (cool burbling percussion, somewhat dated lyrics), "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" (fonky), "U Got the Look" (the voice manipulation is cheesy but it's a bop musically), "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" (catchy power pop) Notable: "Housequake" (um...what‽), "Slow Love" (almost a doowop sound to it)

Good, transitional album from Prince.

Incredibly disappointing. There's no way this is the best Prince record. Yes, every single one of you is wrong.

I didn’t need this much

I have a feeling I'm starting to glean what Prince might be all about. I'm not quite there yet, but I can guess why people are all over this.

I was not previously familiar with this album. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for Prince's immense talent. He can literally do it all. This album seems pretty typical of Prince's material - upbeat and poppy and eclectic. It has some strong songs on here, others seem more dated. As someone who likes but doesn't love Prince, a double album is a bit much to get through, but the material itself is good. I would definitely listen to Prince again, but I might choose a different album over this one.

Prince wrote some great singles, but his album always bore me. The 90s Soul/Funk period never caught me so while I always wanted to enjoy Prince, when I would try I would get turned off by his synth-drum machine tracks. When he goes full funk like Strange Relationship he's a joy to listen to. Obviously Sign O' The Times, You Got the Look, and If I Was Your Girlfriend are the easily recognizable hits from the album but I'd rather not have to invest an hour and 20 minutes to hear some of his 'decent' singles. 3.5/5

This was suprisingly all over the place. Some tracks were mediocre and forgettable, while others were excellent ("Slow Love" was a highlight). This was my first time listening to Prince and I honestly expected better.

From Wikipedia, interesting to learn that: 1. This is regarded as his best album, above Purple Rain, 2. it was originally supposed to be a triple-disk but Prince was forced to reduce it to a double album. It definitely has that 80's sound, which I think is largely because of the synth drums. None of the songs caught my attention.

While I'm not a Prince expert, this album is sort of just a reminder that not only did he write a lot of great songs. He just wrote a lot of songs. Period. And that maybe the quantity is partially the reason there is so much quality. The Wiki said this was his first album without the Revolution, and while he might have appreciated the nimbleness of making songs this way, it does feel stripped down in a half-realized way.

I did not expect to dislike this as much as I did. I had some idea Prince's excellence dropped off in the late 80s/early 90s, if only because my mom had none of his albums after Purple Rain, but I didn't know how badly. I don't know if 1987 was just a bad year for music, but this sounded SO dated, vacillating between tinny beats that seem to be aiming for that 'Let's Go Crazy' vibe but failing to meet that mark, or Isley Bros style soul grooves that can't come near Prince's early output, e.g. 'I Wanna Be Your Lover.' I did enjoy one song I'd never heard (Ballad of Dorothy Parker), and still enjoyed If I Was Your Girlfriend and U Got the Look - but this mostly made me sad that Prince is now slightly less of a legend in my eyes.

Was alright. A couple of stand out songs but didn’t think it was something to write home about overall

I like Prince more than I did prior to starting this project. He was clearly a talented songwriter, musician and singer. But I still don't LOVE his music. It's just not my thing. And 2 albums is a LOT of Prince when you're not a big fan. 3.5, but I can't bring myself to round up.

prince geðveikur

Strange and I can‘t put my finger on what I like about that and what not

The hooks, the voices, the funky beats. It's all here. I can see the talent. I think the songs sound great. I just don't want to listen to them. Maybe there's something wrong with me. It feels like Prince managed to influence the kind of pop music I find the least appealing. I've tried prince over and over again and every time I leave wondering how such catchy and original songs leave me so bored.

this is good prince album. a little overly long for me, and there are moments that are lackluster (i thought one song sounded like a car commercial, lol), but i love housequake and sign o the times. and the way he does a bass line. lets go.

R&B, funky pop I guess is how I’d describe this album. Not too bad, but nothing really stood out.

Never been a big fan of Prince

Some greats songs and some not done great

1/11/24 I appreciate Prince as an artist, i just found it little bit boring.

What started off as promising, the lyrics and groove of the opener being cool and interesting, descended into too long an album filled with pretty average material. Might get better with multiple listens but the sterile production is hard to listen to for an extended period of time.

🎧If Prince had consolidated this down to one LP it probably would have rivaled Purple Rain in quality. It’s got some great tunes! Starfish And Coffee, U Got The Look—great slow builds on both I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man and The Cross. But then there’s also a lot of filler. Title tracks seems to suggest in one line that weed is a gateway drug to heroin?

Sign ‘O’ The Times is a brilliant song, but the rest of this album is very forgettable 3/5

Not my favorite by Prince but still very good

Pop rock, funk, R&B. Ni fu ni fa.

A very slow-burn of an album. Pretty decent if you're focusing on it but I tended to get distracted throughout. I think a few more listens would bump it up. 6/10

Prince is always a good time but this isn’t my fav of his albums.

Hatte ich schon

Obviously very popular, but not my favorite music

I thought Prince would have made a more interesting album than what is on Sign 'O' The Times, but I guess not. I either found the music boring, or so boring that it became annoying. There were some funky beats, but honestly nothing is particularly interesting. I don't care for Prince's vocals much on this album. I think there also needed to be more iconic Prince guitar shredding. Mediocre.

This is a 3 out of respect to Purple Rain

Cons: (1) This is not just a double album, but a “guess what kind of song I can make? all of them” double album; (2) this is Prince just past his prime; (3) too much messing around with cool new toys in the studio and not enough of a central theme (4) Prince rapping. Pros: the worst music by Prince is better than the best music made by your dork-ass favorite band. Fuck you. This is a fucking Prince album.

this was okay?? i looove a lot of prince tunes but this album was quite long with not enough memorable songs to me personally (considering i was listening to this for the first time). as a massive 80s fan though i didn’t hate how any of this sounded - it just started to all blend together and a lot of the songs were long af. definitely need another go with some of these songs tho. “i can never take the place of your man” was the most stand out to me !! catchy as

Sign of the Times (political commentary over a pop song) House quake (dance song) U Got the Look (very 80s) If I was Your Girlfriend I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (80s pop) Adore

A bit to 80s for me to really love.

Noiosetto, mi aspettavo molto meglio

It all sounds pretty good but I'm not a fan of 80s sounding music.

3.5☆/5 10.07.2024

I'll never deny that Prince was a huge talent but I've never been more than ambivalent about him. My impression of this album was that it was self-indulgent, bloated and for the most part, meh. OK at best.

Funky but not as strong as some of the other Prince hits

Great pop rock album. Would die happy if I never get to listen to it again

Prince is right up there for me, by that I mean right up there with a lot of other well respected artists that I just don't get. I'll admit that he has released more than a handful of songs that I do actually like, but fuck me, this lad released 1000's of songs so there were always going to be a few I liked. This album was fairly boring to me - simple drum beats, rhythmic chanting, nothing special....

Poorly mixed, otherwise solid prince album despite none of the major hits Favourite track - It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night

song I knew plus new ones. Prince never fails.

Solid album. First time listening to a Prince album the whole way through, I dig it. His fans are a bit unhinged though. Saw one comment on YouTube that described this album as so ahead of time it would be worshipped religiously in 2134 on a track that follows the same formula as a thousand other Soul songs from the '60s. Good, but not "ahead of time" in 1987. 6 / 10

Not a Prince fan but this album grew on me especially the second disc,as usual I think a lot of the album is about sex and he seems to be singing even squeakier at times. Don't think I will revisit the whole album again but maybe a few of the tracks will get a replay.

Prince again. He always sounds like his music is made for sex, but set in the 80s/90s.

A calm and correct Rock album by Prince. It was agreable to listen through the piece.

Это уже второй его "большой" альбом, и по всей видимости я должен признать: это не совсем мой артист. Лучшая песня - If I Was Your Girlfriend.

Masse bra synth, men fortsatt ikkje innertier

A couple great songs.

Very interesting album. I don't think I connected with it just yet so I'll give it a few listens more. I definitely like the songs on disc 2 more than disc 1.

With the First couple songs I wasn’t sure why prince was so popular to begin with. But album 2 and even the B side of 1 it got better. Still very 80s and housequake might be the worst song ever

Good funky 80s music. Prince is good.

Very chill, mellow, and relaxing album.

Funky tunes, overly sexually driven lyrics. The less poppy tunes were better

Not my favorite Prince album, but still fun and funky

Good, not great. A mixed bag - doesn't include any of the major hits, but damn, the man could sing.

had some nice funky elements but after a while it gets a bit old and nothing really stands out

I hated the first two song but the rest ranged from good to meh

Skivan är all over the place.

I enjoyed most of this album (probably more disc 2 than 1) but I don’t particularly like the songs with the voice change effect. These aren’t the “hits” I remember as much but still some solid tracks.
