Thankfully I had a long solo car journey to break the back of this. But it was a slog. A triple album of banjo, fiddle, guitar and ‘harmonica’. And sometimes ‘voice’. 2 hours of monotony. Good skillful playing, but soooo repetitive and sooooo over long. I actually took the sat nav off mute so I would have an occasional "in a quarter of a mile turn left" to break the tedium. I will admit a couple of the tracks were ok. Exclusively they were instrumentals though, Nashville Blues and Lonesome Fiddle Blues were ok. And the version of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now was lovely (possibly because it was just a lone guitar - they didn’t let the rest of the band join in to fuck it up) But the majority, indeed all of the sung songs were just awful. And some tracks (My Walking Shoes springs to mind) were so bad I was tempted to crash the car to make it stop. Oh and the chit-chat tuneup tracks? Just why!? I don’t fucking care how you recorded it, or what instruments you like!!

Just play the songs and shut the fuck up. Special shout-out though to the female singer. Maybelle Carter, I think was her name? Dreadful! Utterly tuneless. Tone deaf. They could have found a better voice in a dockyard karaoke bar. I don't know how she persuaded the executive to give her a recording contract, but it certainly couldn’t have been by singing. In summary I realise this album wasn’t recorded for me. And I understand that there are plenty brought up on this kind of music that love it. And good for them. But beyjesus, you should have gone for quality over quantity. 1½

It may be an important album but it’s just not for me.

i'm sure this is important heritage music but 45 minutes into this i literally checked to make sure i hadn't left spotify on repeat track because it all sounded the same to me

A relentless barrage of country and bluegrass. This was released on six sides of vinyl. Imagine flipping three discs one by one and hearing the same twang-diddle-iddle for over two hours.

I'm not sure that I am a correct person for this album really. I mean this is like absolutely other far universe of music and it's COMPLETELY impossible to become a part of it for me. The only thing I love is sound of guitar BUT THAT'S ALL. I'm done with it after four songs.

Yeah look I got maybe 30 minutes in and I couldn’t do anymore. The instrumental aspects were nice but the vocals didn’t do it for me. I couldn’t do another hour and a half of this.

This is #day262 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… excuse me, but there's no way I'm listening to a 42-song country album that's more than 2 hours long. Besides, country is already among my worst genres on this journey. I tried one song, but this is where it ends. I just don't relate to this music. This is a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day263.

This was a lot to ingest. A lot of music. A lot of filler. Just a lot. There is something to be said about self editing.

"Classic" country music is bad enough, but two hours of it is serious torture. By halfway through disc 1, I was already checking my phone every minute or so to see how long was left in each song. Nobody should be subjected to such a monstrosity of a collection, particularly when the topic is woeful masculinity and the sound is bland three-chord jangly nonsense. It's a shame humanity didn't advance far past this, considering it sounds like it could've been recorded in the roaring 1890s. 1/5 Key tracks: Grand Ole Opry Song, Tennessee Stud, I Saw The Light

Nitty Gritty Dirt Album - Will The Circle Be Unbroken Don't get me wrong, I can see this being an enjoyable album for some people, since this album does offer some good country songs to listen, unfortunately however in my case, i just didn't find the enjoyment of going through a 38 Song album from start to finish. Again, this album would've been WAY better if it was shorter. There's like 12 songs here that are actually worth to listen, matter of fact, only the second disc was more consistent and fun than the first disc. "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" feels like one of those music circles where people spend hours around a lively campfire. Although it brings warm feelings, I ended up getting bored. Not that the song is bad, but it gets to a point where it gets tiresome. Maybe next time.

Not for me. I wad bored by the third track. Not a single song stood out to me as a particularly good song. Did not finish the album.

I NEVER EVER want to listen to 2 hours straight of the same bluegrass song again. It was like being trapped in a blackhole void filled with banjos and violin.

This list is really making me despise the 70's. This is the only decade I get upset when I see an album I don't already know, because I know it's going to be some awful country folk album, or some bland singer singer writer easy listening music. These guys are technically skilled at what they are doing, but the problem is that I hate country and cannot stand their voices, and I am REALLY REALLY not in the mood for a 2 hour country album. This album is long enough, did we really need banter in between songs. I don't need to hear them tune or say "let's play this one real good this time". I hope they play good and are in tune every time, they don't need to reassure me. Another problem is that they really only have 1 melody, and 2 or 3 variants of the backing band. You could take the melody from any song and place it over any other song and no one would notice. Nowhere near enough variations or ideas to draw out this dreadful album. This album is torture. The only positive is that they can play instruments to an acceptable level. I made it through disc one, I am going to skim disc 2 and I'll listen to any song that sound noticeably different or unique. Surprise! there wasn't anything, but I can't believe they added a 2 minute track that's all dialog. I liked that there was a group of instrumental tracks, but they all sounded the same. Terrible album, they dragged 20 minutes worth of ideas to 2 hours and 10 minutes. They have 3 songs: fast fiddle, not as fast banjo, or slow finger picked guitar. I feel sorry for people who listened to this without skipping through (you are stronger than me). Time to clean my ears (Amplifier Worship has never sounded this good). Low 1.

So this was the hardest album to get through so far. Holy fuck was this difficult. 2 whole goddam hours of country. I'm sure it means a lot for some buy for a 20 year old Australian cunt I'd get more out of watching paint dry.

Fuck me this whole thing is getting worse. A double album of Country and Bluegrass, sorry but I just can't do that. I won't do it. Fifty two in and there's only been about five that I'd be prepared to listen to again. Like one commenter said if nobody has ever mentioned one of theses albums in the last thirty years they shouldn't be on the list. And they can fuck off with that confederate flag.

Nashville must be destroyed and have salt ploughed into its land. It's possibly the most Nashville centred rubbish I've ever listened to, I mean 'the Grand Old Opry Song'? Centre of the world to these Hicks. It's the sound of a small group of people who have spent to long in one town for too many centuries. Not to put a too fine a point on my meaning, it reminds me of the last time I lwatched 'The Deliverence', I can almost picture the banjo solos being performed my in-bred freaks, even the spoken interludes can't dispel this image. Musically, it's not bad in places, but the concept behind the album was to try to reintegrate the old guard of Nashiville musicians into the then latest styles of Country. What's the matter with them? Are they stuck in a time loop? Can't they come up with innovations of their own? If they can't adapt then exterminate them. I couldn't bring myself to listen to all the songs all the way through as I couldn't see any benefit to it. Currently up to 'Sunny Side of the Mountain' and nothing has changed my opinion of the city of Nashville and it's inhabitants. The biggest irony is that one of my favourite bands, Spacemen 3 have recorded a cover of 'May the Circle be Unbroken', its a perfect example of the adapting and renewing in action, rather than this hideous stuck in a timewarp backwards step Dukes of Hazzard toilet. All things said, this could have been a good introduction to Country for a lot of people if it wasn't so bloody long, I could have actually enjoyed some of it as there is a lot of energy and passion and great playing on here 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown' (not on the original release) is a excellent example, but it's still back to 'The Deliverence' in my head. I want ro give it -100 stars for my prejudice and preconceptions, but also I want give it 2 for its musicianship. But 1 will have to do.

It took me two weeks to finally press play on this album, and about three to four sittings to get through the whole thing. I won't even review the music, because that previous sentence is enough to gauge how much I enjoyed (tolerated? endured?) listening to this.

This list has helped me be more open to genres I have been very closed to in the past, country is most definitely one of those genres. I have had a few country albums I found tolerable, even one or two that I enjoyed. This is not one of those albums. This is exactly an example of why I hated country for so many years. And for some fucking reason it's two whole hours long. If you are ever torturing me for information, play this album and I'll talk pretty damn quickly.

Well, I guess the run of good albums had to end at some point. Will The Circle Be Unbroken was an absolutely miserable experience from start to finish. It feels like the band only had a few ideas and just decided to stretch them out into 42 songs for some reason that i will never find out. And some of the songs are just talking for long stretches of time (like come on, we don't want to hear that). There were some more tolerable songs in the album but even they can't save it from being absolutely horrible. I can only just pray the next album will be bettter. This type of hick yee-haw album has no place in a list of 1001 albums to hear before you die. It's worse than bad, a 5 year old child could do better twanging elastic bands. Life's to short to endure this type of torture.

I like a bit of country/bluegrass. I don't like 2+ hours of it. Any quality is negated by the fact it goes on too long, sorry.

There might be some good songs on this album, but I can't remember any of them amongst the two hours and ten minutes of dross (no, I checked to make sure that I hadn't accidentally clicked on the deluxe edition link). It's quite basic bluegrass country stuff, with too many Jesus references, too much tweeness, and very little of interest. Oh, and it also has little skits in it, and sounds of them tuning up. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, 1/5.

Preferably FUCK NO: I’m an avid country hater and when I saw this pop up I immediately wanted to rip out all of my organs and just kill myself. WHY OVER 2 HOURS?!? Literally took me over a day to actually listen to it. Some funky banjo and guitar but nothing I want to touch again. Will I be harsh, yeah but I don’t care.

I mistakenly listened to wrong Will The Circle Be Unbroken and bitched how it was a hour and half album. Then got to this one. Yea, waaaay too long. Way too long for the same sounding stuff over and over again. So long and tedious, left me in a bad mood until I got to the peace pipe. Love the name of the band. Not so much their music. I'm going to score a 1.5. My 1's will be left to the most brutal sounding shit, but this was close.... 1.5

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" answers the age old question: Is there such a thing as too much bluegrass? Before noticing the length of this album, I was tepidly interested. The style of this music can jive with me from time to time, even though I could definitely do without the whole Confederacy (and some of the Jesus and mopey alcoholic) stuff that ends up sneaking into the cracks of this genre. But boy, do I love acoustic guitars and fiddles, folksy shit that almost feels mythological in how it seems from another time and place entirely. But forty two songs? Christ, well, okay … I liked a few of the earlier songs and tolerated some of the others. But this is, in the end, a very bloated album. Don't bother listening to the entire thing unless you're a huge bluegrass simp - or you're another poor stubborn sod like me determined to push through this project with brute force. Otherwise, listen to "Black Mountain Rag", "Flint Hill Special", and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" if you want to experience some genuinely amazing compositions. Then, with your newfound spare time, go play Bioshock Infinite. Or not. I don't know. I'm not your mom. I don't disagree with the idea of picking a bluegrass album to represent your list, but my brother in Christ, this was so bloated I found myself just listening to this out of obligation in the end.

There are worse things to listen to while fetching discs in a field on a rainy Saturday morning, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a 1. This thing almost Stockholm Syndrome’d me into giving it a 2 thanks to the unforgivable run time of 2 hours, but I didn’t succumb. I tried to go song by song, but when discus throwers are hurling discs at you, it makes it hard to look at your phone and I’ll be damned if I listen to this for another run through. Vincent Van Gogh's life (and physical appearance) was changed after being forced to listen to this album. Banjos, harmonicas and violins have no place in my ears. Two hours of this is crazy-making.

This album epitomizes the South and I don't care for it. I skipped through almost every song because I am not going to listen to an album that is almost 2 hours long of music I don't like.

Some decent musicianship, but that's where it ends for me. Can't get into traditional country at all. Despite the varied instrumentation, thick harmonies etc., the songs just come off as bland and uninteresting. Maybe okay for Bob's Country Bunker, but not for me.
