Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Not bad but Way way to long of an album.
I liked the classic country sound. It was a bit long, and did start to feel repetitive, so I knocked it down to 2 stars.
Country não é muito meu estilo
Bluegrass - while the musicianship is unquestionable - the lack of professionalism in the studio can jar after a while. It is fine to mess around when you are just having a jam session at home, but to extend that behaviour into the studio is not so great. Being a double album with a playing time in excess of two hours it is also a bit too much of the same for too long.
I enjoy Nitty Gritty Dirt Band but 42 songs in a row was too much
I nearly bailed out of this halfway through but am glad I didn't as the instrumental tunes at the start of side two were the highlights of the whole album. The title track near the end was also great On the whole though, it's over two hours of very repetitive country/bluegrass and felt even longer
Over 2 hours long. Not really my cup of tea after the first 20 minutes.
Album is way too long to listen to again. Orange Blossom Special is the best song on it, and I do enjoy the bluegrass.
Far too long.
Yea, I couldn't get through a 2 hour hoe down
Country …
I don't know whether the circle ever did break but I asked myself on many occasions whether this album will ever end. Some familiar voices such as Johnny Cash and Emmy Lou Harris offer highlights in this otherwise consistently continuous album, offering album track after album track of bluesy country gospelly covers but missing the guts that really brings the best out of those forms. Generally quite humdrum and a bit of a s l o g
Never heard of this group before and on the first song, the singer sounded a lot like Johnny Cash, but it was not him. Country is one of my least favorite genres, and while this is a whole lot better than modern country singers singing about tractors and beer and blue jeans from their mansions in the city/suburbs, I'm not a fan overall.
det är svårt idag. hade det varit 45 minuter så hade jag gett det en trea för musiken i sig är inte urkass men nu är det så hiskeligt långt så det drar minst ned det till en tvåa. men ja, det får bli en tvåa
Two hours of Bluegrass was a bit too much.
I love a bit of country, but you can have too much of a good thing. This doesn’t need to be a double album and is probably too long even for one album. I bailed after the first disc. There are some okay versions of some classic songs here - some of which I only know from versions by Johnny Cash - but I must admit I gravitated towards the songs I already knew, as I find the sound of this a bit samey after a while. Worth it for Tennessee Stud and Dark As A Dungeon, but my attention did wander after a while.
A *double* album of bluegrass? Well, that's a test. I know it's meant to have that live feel, but the discussion of how they want everyone to play the song gets tedious quickly.
I will stick to the soundtrack of Oh Brother Where Art Thou, or even Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers... A few tracks are fun, Nashville Blues, etc but the album is waaaaaay too long and more for a hardcore fan of this genre (go figure) but if you cut the chatter before the songs you'd snip 20 minutes out of this sucker...I get it, you want that homey vibe but come on, it wears thin. Good and memorable always wins out over long and gradually tedious.
Hillbilly music.
Only so much bluegrass I can take
Not really a necessary listen before you die album
Album is obviously way too long. However, if there is a version of country I can handle, it is bluegrass. The songs without lyrics were the best ones. Favorite tracks: Nashville Blues, Orange Blossom Special
Gammel country, blues, lidt folk-ish, lidt hyggeligt, men alt for langt
they really be playing the same song for 2 hours lol. jk I enjoyed feeling like i was in a coen brothers' film, although just like 'O Brother Where Art Thou?', I got bored. Gotta appreciate the artistry and togetherness and friendship the music brings
Too long
TOO LONG
I don't think I've ever heard of this band 2+ hours of bluegrass and I'm struggling in under 2 minutes. I managed the first half and feel I deserve some kind of medal to be honest.
I couldn’t get through this but respect the musicianship.
So long, but I guess it serves as a good sampling of older country and bluegrass.
I somehow finished this. Cannot recommend at all but respect the artists
Not a big fan.
Good in its way, definitely not my lane
Disc 2 was actually pretty enjoyable in places, but two whole hours of this was a bit of a slog.
Nah.
Con: It's 2 hours. It's impossible to pick out the good ones and trash. Pro: Lots of replayability. Probably the most accessible way of listening to original bluegrass. Besides, many of them, including the third quarter, are entirely instrumental and can be fun and speedy (but unoriginal). Con: It's country. Pro: It's the type of quality country before it all went to shit. Con: The majority of the songs suck. They're simple, monotonous, and too reliant on the singer (who performs poorly by today's standards). It's as basic as a nobody fiddling with an acoustic instrument singing about their home life as raw as possible, which it is minus the nobody part. If you have a good ear or century-old nostalgia, you might gain something. Pro: There are some oddly recognizable tunes like "Cannonball Rag" you may have heard in random soundtracks throughout your life. Also, there are some wild bluegrass songs that pull of cool instrumental tricks. Otherwise, it's meant for casual listening. Standouts (aka the ones least skippable): Nashville Blues, You Are My Flower (sounds like Grateful Dead), Tennessee Stud, The End of the World, I Saw the Light, Lonesome Fiddle Blues, Orange Blossom Special, Wabash Cannonball, Down Yonder, I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes, Both Sides Now, Foggy Mountain Breakdown (Only 2 of those songs are actually crossovers with the bluegrass legends. Guess I didn't care much at all for them)
Honestly better than I expected, while I did skim listen to a few of the songs I wasn't interested in, I did catch myself enjoying some all the way through. The duration of this album is just ridiculous but respectable, I'm sure if I was in love with this kind of music the sheer volume available would probably be a plus, but for someone skeptical it's just overwhelming.
Yeehaaw
It is very country. And very bluegrass and definitely not my normal listen. If you like these genres there’s plenty here to like as there’s 2 hours of music to listen to.
Jesus Christ, is this being procedurally generated as I'm listening? It just never ends. Every time I'm like "That was a pretty good song, wonder how much there's left" and I'm not even halfway there. This is just way too long for what it is - a generic hillbilly country album. Nothing wrong with the songs, some are good, some are pretty boring but as an album experience, this is a 2/5. Also what's up with the confederate flags on the cover.
couldn't finish
The first few tracks are fine, but it just goes on and on and on. There are excessively long intros to almost every song, as though they couldn't be bothered to cut it like a normal album.
WHY IS THIS ALBUM OVER TWO HOURS LONG??
Not the best. Not my kind of thing
I wouldn’t mind listening to a couple of these songs in one sitting, but the fact that the album is like 2 hours of music that all sounds about the same to me made my experience pretty negative. It’s frustrating too because there was some damn fine banjo and fiddle work on here. 3/10
I thought this was a joke but its real. I love Fishin in the Dark but that song isn't even on this incredibly long and bloated album. I barely got through the first half because these songs felt so unlike this band. At least my perception of them. Not a huge fan of blue grass slow songs when it comes to country.
Amazingly recorded album. It puts the listener right amongst the session. Country and bluegrass aren't genres I would go out of my way to listen to. I'm not familiar with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band or the list of collaborators on this album. Maybelle Carter was Johnny Cash's mother in law and pioneer of the "Carter Scratch" guitar fingerpick and strum technique. It would be an enjoyable listen if you have a spare 2 hours and the urge to listen to some country and bluegrass. I couldn't listen to the whole album from start to finish. ✰✰
Wow this is a long album. I feel completely inadequate in giving any review to this album - I'm just not a fan of this kind of country music at all, even though I could appreciate the musicianship. It's really the singing (e.g. "The Precious Jewel" - sorry Roy Acuff, we'll just have to part ways here....) that I cannot enjoy. On a positive note, I actually really like the conversations between songs though; I like hearing how creative processes come together. 2 stars - I know it's probably good but I just can't. Also the confederate flags on the cover ... yeah nope.
Look, I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would (considering my feelings about the genre), but I'm not about to listen to 2 hours of country music. It's honestly astonishing how much of this I did listen to, so props to the artists I guess for keeping me somewhat entertained. I actually enjoyed some of the instrumental songs (Nashville Blues and some others) and their rendition of Tennessee Stud. I did not enjoy the rest.
Don’t listen to country
Very country, despite being from Long Beach. Sunny side of life was by them? Had no idea.
Ok this is a complete unknown. I want to say some kind of civil war songs or something? Ok yeah it's country, complete with banjo. That's cool. Jesus Christ, does this really go for almost 2 hours? Fuuuuuck, what a punish. The songs themselves deserve a 3 but the sheer fucking length of it makes it a 2/5.
Haha.
Goddamn this album is LOOOOONNNNNGGGGGGG. I don't mind bluegrass/country but a double album that's over two hours long is overkill. If you listen to this album regularly, I've a sneaking suspicion you find members of your family attractive. Best Tracks: Tennessee Stud; I Saw The Light; Will The Circle Be Unbroken
2.5. Not terrible but not my thing.
Well... this is first album I couldn't get through and I feel terrible. Unfortunately, this is just not my type of music and it's also a double album to boot. I spent a lot of time on Wikipedia reading about the history of the album and it still wasn't enough to reel me in. I guess you could say... The circle has been unbroken.
I love worship/country/folk/delta blues so I hope I'll love this too. Didn't :( There are incredibly talented people on this but I think viewing the other artists' songs is a better idea. Good starting point but the other earlier recordings of these songs are just too good
Yeee-haaarrrr!! Not really my cotton pick in’ style o’ music y’hear?
Seemed to go on forever. I like the music, but not so much all at once. I got tired of it.
Bluegrass/country collab
Just no my Type
I didn't love the vocals, but the instrumentals were good background music. And that's way too many songs. How many double albums are on this 1001 list? I've also decided I wish the ratings scale was 10 point.
Good storytelling, but too long and I lost interest several times.
Not really my thing
Not for me
Not my cup of tea - this is kind of knee-slapping, fiddling and such
Didn't listen to all of it but every track was almost the same so I think I got the vibe. 4.5/10
I liked the music, but my God was it too long! 42 songs, 105 minutes. If this album was half in length it could've got double the score.
People actually listen to this? was mildly entertaining once
Note my kind of thing
Not even remotely interested in country-folk & bluegrass... skipped after 1/4 of the first song.
Esta cotorro en su onda...
not for me, but i can see why people would like it.
Double albums now get an automatic -1 star. I don't like that these songs and instruments are fun, good, quality, high-energy, and the untrained and rough voices take away from it so much.
Tocan bien chido la neta
Si si, pero no.
I quite like all of these songs, they're fun and make me smile. However, an entire album of this is practically torture. These songs aren't meant to be listened to an hour at a time, but would be much better to be dipped into occasionally for a single track here and there. My brain hurts a bit after doing the entire thing at once.
I just can't listen to that much bluegrass. A good album, with a good story but just couldn't keep me the entire run through
good country album. by the end I was exhausted of the hearing the banjo.
Good musicians, kind of too hillbilly/country for me
Country album, some big names on there but not for me
Absolute slog of an album…. Felt like I was in Smokey and the bandit there for a cotton picket minute. Too much banjo for my taste!!
Lo siento, pero no. ¿Más de dos horas de country? No, gracias.
The idea of collaborating with a wide range of country and bluegrass musicians across generations is a cool idea, but this is nearly 2 hours of people mournfully singing about whisky, Jesus, and Tennessee (of which like 10 minutes is in-studio banter and that probably isn't an exaggeration). These are clearly talented musicians and the music sounds nice, but I could feel myself get tangibly older as I listened. My back hurts and I need a drink. I would probably have given a higher score if this album was 1/3rd of the length, but this was the closest that I have gotten to bailing early so far and I have had to listen to pre-disco Bee Gees.
A covers album should not be included on this list. The wiki entry talks about bridging a gap between generations, but let's not forget as this was released the Beatles had already moved to the US and Elvis had become the biggest star in the world, retired and then come back. The world had already taken its steps into the modern way of making and experiencing music
Hello. How long will you survive the hoedown? Can you make it to the end, or will you die along the way? I made it, but it was highly touch and go. There is simply no earthly reason for anyone to listen to this nonsense for this long.
Ugh
ok. entendo que eh um album importante pq chama mto véio da música country pra tocar umas música tradicional e tal mas eu não CONSIGO ME IMPORTAR com country, sério mesmo. só serviu pra me deixar puto hoje mesmo.
No fav song
i don't have the strength in me to listen through a double cd country album
This album made me squeal like a pig.
To be honest, I couldn’t finish this. So many sounds of danger in just the first track. I gave it a go, but at 2 hours running time there is only so much bull shit tolerance I have. And today was a workday so my tolerance was low to begin with.
DNF
Two hours of bad covers and studio improvisation? It almost doesn't matter that this is country which I'm not a big fan of, it's just not a great album, it's debatable if you should even call it an album.
2/10 - it’s not for me. Usually I keep scores 2/5 or up if it’s not egregious (looking at you Aerosmith) but 2 hours for a runtime is excessive.
I don't like this; it's not my style of music and is far too long. 2/10
After the five hour mark, I stopped listening. In all seriousness, this album should have been one disc with no candid chats and it would have been much improved.
There is only so much honky tonk one can take.
I'm sorry, I really did try and like this, but this album made me go slightly mad. I can appreciate the musicianship at certain times, but this gave me a headache.
Not really my thing. Throwback music, like way back. Pickin' ain't in my wheelhouse. But I am aware of this being a popular album with influences. Period classic songs like "Keep On The Sunny Side", "I Saw The Light", "Nine Pound Hammer" can't save this one. This is what people listened to when they didn't have cars, or stereos, or TV's. No thanks I'd go postal if I had to sit through this concert live.
Crap
This was like going to the dentist whilst your grandparents talk you through a poweroint presentation on every type of grass there is in the Southern USA and exactly how each type of grass grows. Every now and then they stop to fiddle with the wifi.
я занадто нон-амерікан, щоб вподобати таку музику. прослуховування цього альбому було дуже неприємним, мені не сподобалась ні музика ні вокал, ні тексти пісень
Eh, not my jam.
Man. I hate country.
I’ll be honest. I didn’t listen to this … at all. 2 hours and 10 minutes long, and it took me 20 seconds to know I was giving it 1 star and moving on. This really is NOT for me ! I can’t even be objectively constructive about it, I can not put myself through it. Nope !
"Over 2 hours of hurdy-durdy tweedle twangy country??? NO. After the first hour I got the point, thanks." c
It kinda jams but also fuck this Will I listen to again: 0%
No. There's something I should understand, but I don't.
There is only so much bluegrass a person can listen to in a day, and this album pretty much triples that amount. Not for me.
Not for me. 1/5
Not my bag, I liked the purely instrumental tracks but I can’t handle two hours of this.
2 hours?!? 2 HOURS?! No.
alchilito no lo voa escuchar y me da ansia tenerlo no rateado así q le pondré 1, perdón u-u
I do not like this type of folk music. It reminds me of too much of the movie sinners
i can’t do this vibe
this is the shit they use to train generative AI
Culturally interesting, just not at all my thing.
1/5
From the first notes of this I knew I was going to struggle to finish. I really did not need two hours and nine minutes of music that I hate with all my being. This was an album that made me question my vow to listen to each of these records all the way through. I will say that some of the instrumental parts were not bad but I still can’t get on with the down home, traditional Americana country. I can see that some people would really love this album, I am no one of them. 1.5/5
För tråkigt, pallar inte att lyssna klart. En dubbel dessutom, blä! Etta!
Dull, dull, dull. How did this get anywhere near this list. I thought it would never end
Not my thing
I scanned a couple of tracks, but this would just be wholly unenjoyable to sit through two discs of this.
Aside from the fact Country Music is the only genre of music I loathe, the album is longer than the average feature film, contains some of the most ear-bleeding vocals I've ever heard, and is littered with senseless collaborations. This is the worst album in this generator I've heard so far. Favorite Track: "I Saw The Light".
WAY TOO HICK! WAY TOO LONG! couldn’t even get halfway through ZERO!!!!! STARS!!!!!
Not for me
NO COUNTRY
I'm afraid I only made it through half of this country rock (with a big epmphasis on the country) album. What possessed these guys to produce a triple album of this stuff is beyond me.
This is the type of shit people mean when they say they listen to everything but country music.
TWO HOURS….TEN MINUTES….I will never get that time back. I hate the cover with the traitor flag! The music was awful and grating from the very beginning, and TWO HOURS AND TEN MINUTES later it was still grating. I think I deserve a cookie at the very least cause I actually listened to this album and didn’t give up. You can’t say I don’t take this list seriously cause I just kept telling myself it was gunna get better or that I was eventually gunna find something I like. I was wrong and I should be ashamed of myself for lying to myself like that. Ok, joking aside, this is by far one of the worst albums I have listened to because of this list. This album was so bad I had to see if this band ever did anything I would appreciate in any capacity and sadly they only got worse over time. This album is totally garbage but they pop country songs they released in the 80s should be a crime. Seriously, avoid this religious garbage at all costs.
one song is enough for me, but i get the love
Definitely not my thing.
Third fucking country album in a row. There are so many country albums in this list I'm starting to think whoever compiled it huffed gasoline and paint thinner in a Louisiana outhouse.
Fucking hate this. Makes me wanna kick a horse
Not my kind of music. Sorry. ★
nashville blues
Any wokerati on here? If so they won’t be best please with this bands name. If they are wringing their hands in anger then this album has done its job so I salute it for that. But that is the best thing I can say about it. 1/5 13/8/25
Giving it a 1 for the genre more than the record. I managed 5 songs then tapped out, another one for the Guantanamo Bay resident DJ.
Ой ні, соррі.
Thankfully I had a long solo car journey to break the back of this. But it was a slog. A triple album of banjo, fiddle, guitar and ‘harmonica’. And sometimes ‘voice’. 2 hours of monotony. Good skillful playing, but soooo repetitive and sooooo over long. I actually took the sat nav off mute so I would have an occasional "in a quarter of a mile turn left" to break the tedium. I will admit a couple of the tracks were ok. Exclusively they were instrumentals though, Nashville Blues and Lonesome Fiddle Blues were ok. And the version of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now was lovely (possibly because it was just a lone guitar - they didn’t let the rest of the band join in to fuck it up) But the majority, indeed all of the sung songs were just awful. And some tracks (My Walking Shoes springs to mind) were so bad I was tempted to crash the car to make it stop. Oh and the chit-chat tuneup tracks? Just why!? I don’t fucking care how you recorded it, or what instruments you like!! Just play the songs and shut the fuck up. Special shout-out though to the female singer. Maybelle Carter, I think was her name? Dreadful! Utterly tuneless. Tone deaf. They could have found a better voice in a dockyard karaoke bar. I don't know how she persuaded the executive to give her a recording contract, but it certainly couldn’t have been by singing. In summary I realise this album wasn’t recorded for me. And I understand that there are plenty brought up on this kind of music that love it. And good for them. But beyjesus, you should have gone for quality over quantity. 1½
It may be an important album but it’s just not for me.
i'm sure this is important heritage music but 45 minutes into this i literally checked to make sure i hadn't left spotify on repeat track because it all sounded the same to me
an exhausting listen. it wasn’t even bad, it’s just SO long and SO repetitive that getting through it was not a good time
no listened
I don't really like this, not my style of music and is far too long. 2/10
A relentless barrage of country and bluegrass. This was released on six sides of vinyl. Imagine flipping three discs one by one and hearing the same twang-diddle-iddle for over two hours.
I'm not sure that I am a correct person for this album really. I mean this is like absolutely other far universe of music and it's COMPLETELY impossible to become a part of it for me. The only thing I love is sound of guitar BUT THAT'S ALL. I'm done with it after four songs.
Yeah I absolutely hate this Not helped by having 4 country albums in 5 days. Is this the worst of them? Don't even know. But it is the longest by far. It doesnt respect my time and I don't respect it Utter drivel
A little too country for my taste. Really long album too.
Not for me, sorry champs
I can't make myself listen to country even if my life depends on it and this album did not change it
not my bag
Yeah look I got maybe 30 minutes in and I couldn’t do anymore. The instrumental aspects were nice but the vocals didn’t do it for me. I couldn’t do another hour and a half of this.
How do I describe auditory torture? Listening to this two hours of "a pickin' and a strummin' "
Rubbish
This is #day262 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… excuse me, but there's no way I'm listening to a 42-song country album that's more than 2 hours long. Besides, country is already among my worst genres on this journey. I tried one song, but this is where it ends. I just don't relate to this music. This is a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day263.
2 hours of fucking poop!!!!!!
This was a lot to ingest. A lot of music. A lot of filler. Just a lot. There is something to be said about self editing.
"Classic" country music is bad enough, but two hours of it is serious torture. By halfway through disc 1, I was already checking my phone every minute or so to see how long was left in each song. Nobody should be subjected to such a monstrosity of a collection, particularly when the topic is woeful masculinity and the sound is bland three-chord jangly nonsense. It's a shame humanity didn't advance far past this, considering it sounds like it could've been recorded in the roaring 1890s. 1/5 Key tracks: Grand Ole Opry Song, Tennessee Stud, I Saw The Light
If that does not make you want to open mouth kiss your cousin, I do not know what does
Not for me - deluxe version too...too much
If I spent all of this time explaining what my review was going to be like before actually writing my review, you'll hsve an idea what this album is like.
This album is over 2 hours and has 42 songs. I only needed to listen to 10 secs of a song to know I'm rating it a 1!
Nope
I am so glad this is over.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Album - Will The Circle Be Unbroken Don't get me wrong, I can see this being an enjoyable album for some people, since this album does offer some good country songs to listen, unfortunately however in my case, i just didn't find the enjoyment of going through a 38 Song album from start to finish. Again, this album would've been WAY better if it was shorter. There's like 12 songs here that are actually worth to listen, matter of fact, only the second disc was more consistent and fun than the first disc. If it was shorter, I would've given it a better score than a 1 star. 1.- Grand Ole Opry Song = 5/10 2.- Keep On The Sunny Side = 6/10 3.- Nashville Blues = 7/10 4.- You Are My Flower = 6/10 5.- The Precious Jewel = 6/10 6.- Dark As A Dungeon = 7/10 7.- Tennessee Stud = 5/10 8.- Black Mountain Rag = 5/10 9.- Wreck On The Highway = 4/10 10.- The End Of The World = 6/10 11.- I Saw The Light = 3/10 12.- Sunny Side Of The Mountain = 5/10 13.- Nine Pound Hammer = 4/10 14.- Losin' You (Might Be The Best Thing Yet) = 6/10 15.- Honky Tonkin' = 3/10 16.- You Don't Know My Mind = 4/10 17.- My Walkin' Shoes = 5/10 18.- Lonesome Fiddle Blues = 6/10 19.- Cannonball Rag = 5/10 20.- Avalanche = 5/10 21.- Flint Hill Special = 5/10 22.- Togary Mountain = 6/10 23.- Earl's Breakdown = 4/10 24.- Orange Blossom Special = 7/10 25.- Wabash Cannonball = 4/10 26.- Lost Highway = 6/10 27.- Doc Watson And Merle Travis: First Meeting (Dialogue) = 5/10 28.- Way Downtown = 6/10 29.- Down Yonder = 5/10 30.- Pins And Needles (In My Heart) = 7/10 31.- Honky Tonk Blues = 6/10 32.- Sailin' On To Hawaii = 7/10 33.- I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes = 7/10 34.- I'm A Pilgrim = 5/10 35.- Wildwood Flower = 5/10 36.- Soldier's Joy = 5/10 37.- Will The Circle Be Unbroken = 8/10 38.- Both Sides Now = 7/10 FINAL SCORE: 5.3/10
"Will The Circle Be Unbroken" feels like one of those music circles where people spend hours around a lively campfire. Although it brings warm feelings, I ended up getting bored. Not that the song is bad, but it gets to a point where it gets tiresome. Maybe next time.
Hell no.
Kut country Is mij niet helemaal duidelijk waarom dit een 1001 is, is vrij standaard
I almost enjoyed it when I noted that 2 hours of honks, ponks, tonks, and yeaaahas counts like hypnosis.
It’s a shame bluegrass music has travelled beyond the region where people chose to listen to it.
This is a 2 hours long horse riding lesson.
Not for me. I wad bored by the third track. Not a single song stood out to me as a particularly good song. Did not finish the album.
I NEVER EVER want to listen to 2 hours straight of the same bluegrass song again. It was like being trapped in a blackhole void filled with banjos and violin.
This list is really making me despise the 70's. This is the only decade I get upset when I see an album I don't already know, because I know it's going to be some awful country folk album, or some bland singer singer writer easy listening music. These guys are technically skilled at what they are doing, but the problem is that I hate country and cannot stand their voices, and I am REALLY REALLY not in the mood for a 2 hour country album. This album is long enough, did we really need banter in between songs. I don't need to hear them tune or say "let's play this one real good this time". I hope they play good and are in tune every time, they don't need to reassure me. Another problem is that they really only have 1 melody, and 2 or 3 variants of the backing band. You could take the melody from any song and place it over any other song and no one would notice. Nowhere near enough variations or ideas to draw out this dreadful album. This album is torture. The only positive is that they can play instruments to an acceptable level. I made it through disc one, I am going to skim disc 2 and I'll listen to any song that sound noticeably different or unique. Surprise! there wasn't anything, but I can't believe they added a 2 minute track that's all dialog. I liked that there was a group of instrumental tracks, but they all sounded the same. Terrible album, they dragged 20 minutes worth of ideas to 2 hours and 10 minutes. They have 3 songs: fast fiddle, not as fast banjo, or slow finger picked guitar. I feel sorry for people who listened to this without skipping through (you are stronger than me). Time to clean my ears (Amplifier Worship has never sounded this good). Low 1.
Should be a crime to let someone listen to country for more than 2 hours
Nearly two hours of hillbilly music plus confederate flags on the album cover equals an absolute no from me.
Didn’t care for it.
So this was the hardest album to get through so far. Holy fuck was this difficult. 2 whole goddam hours of country. I'm sure it means a lot for some buy for a 20 year old Australian cunt I'd get more out of watching paint dry.
Fuck me this whole thing is getting worse. A double album of Country and Bluegrass, sorry but I just can't do that. I won't do it. Fifty two in and there's only been about five that I'd be prepared to listen to again. Like one commenter said if nobody has ever mentioned one of theses albums in the last thirty years they shouldn't be on the list. And they can fuck off with that confederate flag.
Does exactly what it says on the can. Typical country music, not for me. One.
Nashville must be destroyed and have salt ploughed into its land. It's possibly the most Nashville centred rubbish I've ever listened to, I mean 'the Grand Old Opry Song'? Centre of the world to these Hicks. It's the sound of a small group of people who have spent to long in one town for too many centuries. Not to put a too fine a point on my meaning, it reminds me of the last time I lwatched 'The Deliverence', I can almost picture the banjo solos being performed my in-bred freaks, even the spoken interludes can't dispel this image. Musically, it's not bad in places, but the concept behind the album was to try to reintegrate the old guard of Nashiville musicians into the then latest styles of Country. What's the matter with them? Are they stuck in a time loop? Can't they come up with innovations of their own? If they can't adapt then exterminate them. I couldn't bring myself to listen to all the songs all the way through as I couldn't see any benefit to it. Currently up to 'Sunny Side of the Mountain' and nothing has changed my opinion of the city of Nashville and it's inhabitants. The biggest irony is that one of my favourite bands, Spacemen 3 have recorded a cover of 'May the Circle be Unbroken', its a perfect example of the adapting and renewing in action, rather than this hideous stuck in a timewarp backwards step Dukes of Hazzard toilet. All things said, this could have been a good introduction to Country for a lot of people if it wasn't so bloody long, I could have actually enjoyed some of it as there is a lot of energy and passion and great playing on here 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown' (not on the original release) is a excellent example, but it's still back to 'The Deliverence' in my head. I want ro give it -100 stars for my prejudice and preconceptions, but also I want give it 2 for its musicianship. But 1 will have to do.
Not for me
Uh? Joke? Doesn’t belong here…sorry
It took me two weeks to finally press play on this album, and about three to four sittings to get through the whole thing. I won't even review the music, because that previous sentence is enough to gauge how much I enjoyed (tolerated? endured?) listening to this.
2 hours of country... this album might just be the first horsemen of the apocalypse
Vittu miten pitkä
No thanks... ugh shitty country music. Yeah, I'm not sitting through 2 hours of country rock.
Pass... ove 2 hours country... No thanks
2 hrs of country music!!! DnF
im sorry but who the fuck is putting this one and thinking "mm yeah thats the shit". maybe just maybe i wouldnt mind if it wasnt TWO HOURS LONG absolute day ruiner :( while i started doing this challenge to expand my music, this was not the one.... 0.8/5
this is such a boring country album there are so many better to options to choose from
This list has helped me be more open to genres I have been very closed to in the past, country is most definitely one of those genres. I have had a few country albums I found tolerable, even one or two that I enjoyed. This is not one of those albums. This is exactly an example of why I hated country for so many years. And for some fucking reason it's two whole hours long. If you are ever torturing me for information, play this album and I'll talk pretty damn quickly.
Oh - not mine
Overdose on bluegrass/ country-western.
Well, I guess the run of good albums had to end at some point. Will The Circle Be Unbroken was an absolutely miserable experience from start to finish. It feels like the band only had a few ideas and just decided to stretch them out into 42 songs for some reason that i will never find out. And some of the songs are just talking for long stretches of time (like come on, we don't want to hear that). There were some more tolerable songs in the album but even they can't save it from being absolutely horrible. I can only just pray the next album will be bettter. Best Song: Nashville Blues Worst Song: I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes
If you make it past 10 seconds you’re a better man than me!
This type of hick yee-haw album has no place in a list of 1001 albums to hear before you die. It's worse than bad, a 5 year old child could do better twanging elastic bands. Life's to short to endure this type of torture.
YeAh, not a fan
I like a bit of country/bluegrass. I don't like 2+ hours of it. Any quality is negated by the fact it goes on too long, sorry.
There might be some good songs on this album, but I can't remember any of them amongst the two hours and ten minutes of dross (no, I checked to make sure that I hadn't accidentally clicked on the deluxe edition link). It's quite basic bluegrass country stuff, with too many Jesus references, too much tweeness, and very little of interest. Oh, and it also has little skits in it, and sounds of them tuning up. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, 1/5.
Jävligt långt, allt låter lika, random speakin i mellan låtarna int min grej
I really hate this type of music. I am so sorry
Unfortunately the only country music I can listen to is in opening scenes of horror movies.
This is a „love it or hate it“ type of music and I hate it. Could not bring myself to sit through the entire album.
Fuck off and when you think you're done fucking off why don't you fuck off a little bit more. cuntry music is awful.
Oof
One in a million similar albums
No. Just no.
Too country twang for me
Preferably FUCK NO: I’m an avid country hater and when I saw this pop up I immediately wanted to rip out all of my organs and just kill myself. WHY OVER 2 HOURS?!? Literally took me over a day to actually listen to it. Some funky banjo and guitar but nothing I want to touch again. Will I be harsh, yeah but I don’t care.
I mistakenly listened to wrong Will The Circle Be Unbroken and bitched how it was a hour and half album. Then got to this one. Yea, waaaay too long. Way too long for the same sounding stuff over and over again. So long and tedious, left me in a bad mood until I got to the peace pipe. Love the name of the band. Not so much their music. I'm going to score a 1.5. My 1's will be left to the most brutal sounding shit, but this was close.... 1.5
If you’re up for drinking moonshine and eyeing an immediate family with lustful intent this needs to be your slow jams 95’.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" answers the age old question: Is there such a thing as too much bluegrass? Before noticing the length of this album, I was tepidly interested. The style of this music can jive with me from time to time, even though I could definitely do without the whole Confederacy (and some of the Jesus and mopey alcoholic) stuff that ends up sneaking into the cracks of this genre. But boy, do I love acoustic guitars and fiddles, folksy shit that almost feels mythological in how it seems from another time and place entirely. But forty two songs? Christ, well, okay … I liked a few of the earlier songs and tolerated some of the others. But this is, in the end, a very bloated album. Don't bother listening to the entire thing unless you're a huge bluegrass simp - or you're another poor stubborn sod like me determined to push through this project with brute force. Otherwise, listen to "Black Mountain Rag", "Flint Hill Special", and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" if you want to experience some genuinely amazing compositions. Then, with your newfound spare time, go play Bioshock Infinite. Or not. I don't know. I'm not your mom. I don't disagree with the idea of picking a bluegrass album to represent your list, but my brother in Christ, this was so bloated I found myself just listening to this out of obligation in the end.
not mine
En keksi mitään syytä kuunnella tätä yli kahta tuntia
neat but not my jam
Damn shame because I would've given this a 2 had it been shortened by an hour. But I listened to this whole shebang top to bottom, so I deserve to give this a 1.
There are worse things to listen to while fetching discs in a field on a rainy Saturday morning, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a 1. This thing almost Stockholm Syndrome’d me into giving it a 2 thanks to the unforgivable run time of 2 hours, but I didn’t succumb. I tried to go song by song, but when discus throwers are hurling discs at you, it makes it hard to look at your phone and I’ll be damned if I listen to this for another run through. D Grand Ole Opry Song - 1 Keep on the Sunny Side - 2 Nashville Blues - 3 You Are My Flower - 2 The Precious Jewel - 1 Dark As a Dungeon - 1 Tennessee Stud - 1 This is all I got through but there were plenty more 1’s after this, I assure you.
Nope.
I am not a fan of Country Music
ugh tough listen couldn't make it to the end. i probably would have given it more of a chance if there wasn't the overwhelming feeling of wasting over 2 hours of my life on it. oh well, can't like everything
NEJ, IKKE MERE HILLBILLY COUNTRY MUSIK, JEG DØR
Country ...
C&W / Bluegrass ain't for me.
Way too long
El country es muy aburrido. Next.
ik så meget mig
Dreadful.
42 songs??? couldn't get through this one, just too much twang. One or two songs might be tolerable but not a whole album.
Only listened to the first 5 songs but decided I didn't need to do this to myself any longer. Favorite: i cant
when will it end
Just not my style
Really not my thing.
There's 42 tracks and nearly 3 hours is enough to make you hate Country & Western and convince yourself it all sounds the same
uhhhh… yeha no. sorry. this is just not my thing in any sort of way and it was wayyy too long.
It was as if I was in a super rural area
Als soundtrack voor een Coen Brothers movie kan ik hier nog wel wat mee, maar zo 'los' gaat dit nergens over natuurlijk.
Nee hor, die pure Nashville country is echt too much
Serieus? Dit is iets wat wordt gezien als een album wat je gehoord moet hebben? Als je dit langer dan 20 seconden kunt volhouden dan klopt er iets niet.
shocker
Vincent Van Gogh's life (and physical appearance) was changed after being forced to listen to this album. Banjos, harmonicas and violins have no place in my ears. Two hours of this is crazy-making.
This album epitomizes the South and I don't care for it. I skipped through almost every song because I am not going to listen to an album that is almost 2 hours long of music I don't like.
Not my scene at all
Ein gepflegtes "Yeahhh haaa" hätte es auch getan da braucht man kein Album für
It's a shame that this is 2 hours too long. I was mostly enjoying this, enough for 3* I'd say but it has to go down as a 1* overall for the sheer stamina required to get through from start to finish.
Ridiculous in length. If its 40 minutes I'm happily looking at a 3 but a near 3 hour album is just bonkers
Enjoyed this. But it is far far far too long.
Nope. Did not enjoy this at all.
No.
Some decent musicianship, but that's where it ends for me. Can't get into traditional country at all. Despite the varied instrumentation, thick harmonies etc., the songs just come off as bland and uninteresting. Maybe okay for Bob's Country Bunker, but not for me.
1972: Will The Circle Be Unbroken
I hate this kind of music
