Reviews (page 7 of 12)
About half a year ago I recall being pretty under-impressed with "Dusty in Memphis". Now, listening to a Girl Called Dusty, I kind of get it. It's pretty fun easy listening. Fav tracks: You Don't Own Me, Do Re Mi, Wishin' And Hopin'
Recognized a few songs. Wouldn’t seek this album out.
This was different than I thought. I am almost not sure that is a good thing. Why? Well, it was kind of jazz, kind of folk, kind of country, kind of contemporary... with a pop mix... it is hard to genre exactly. Not that it has to be genre'd but it could use a bit of focus maybe? Maybe not. IDK. Her voice is pretty low, alto for sure. That is not bad or anything, just a bit maybe unexpected? It fits well the jazzy stuff. I think maybe I am here trying to explain an album that is exactly somewhere in the middle for me. it is never bad, but maybe kind of never shines for me either. I guess now I can make the joke that Dusty Springfield has a kind of dusty (somewhat light smokey) voice. Cool.
Classic sound and great vocal range. Missing a little pizzazz, but an interesting listen all said and done.
Simple soulful songs with a voice of an Angel. My guess is these songs have set the scene for many movies.
That was okay!
I'm a sucker for strong vocals and Dusty definitely has a great voice. I know and like several of the songs on this album too (Mama Said, You Don't Own Me, Mockingbird). I think it just feels difficult to rate an album that is entirely covers of songs written for other artists like The Shirelles and Dionne Warwick. This doesn't feel like a particularly significant version of these songs, which makes me question this album's inclusion on the list. 7/10.
I will not include the bonus tracks from the 1997 CD reissue in this review. It's been a little over 300 albums since I listened to Dusty in Memphis, and I remember enjoying that record and recognizing how influential Dusty Springfield was in blue-eyed soul. I wish I had the same sentiments for A Girl Called Dusty. I can really boil this review down to, "It's a solid debut record of covers of R&B, pop, and soul standards." For sure, Dusty did a decent job with her voice, carrying some of these renditions like Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me", Sandy Stewart's "My Coloring Book", and the Shirelles' "Will You Love Me Tomorrow". But that's the most glowing praise I could give, considering the instrumentation is rather rote in going through the motions with these songs. Also not helping matters is not only listening to this album after Dusty in Memphis took more deviations in the styles emulated, but also after hearing both Aretha Franklin albums included in the book, and how transformative and powerful Aretha's voice was in taking ownership of her covers. I can't quite say the same for Dusty Springfield this early in her solo career. Again, A Girl Called Dusty is a fine enough collection of covers, but not much more than that.
Dusty has a great voice, but this isn't doing anything for me. The other Dusty album had a couple of great moments. This one doesn't. The music seems to be the problem. It just sounds lifeless compared to the vocals.
My main take away is that Dusty has a great singing voice and she sounds great on this record especially... But this album is lacking something to really hook me in, it's pleasant but its not gripping me. Very easy to forget that I'm listening to it
норм кантри, наверное оч популярная классическая певица на западе, которая играет по радио в пикапе у какого то мужичка с blue collar
I loved it but I don't get how an album of covers ended up in the book. I mean she does a great job covering them so i guess it's great actually?
Great record.
Honestly, kind of a pleasantly surprised. It’s a more energetic soul album than most of them are. Not boring, occasionally catchy even. Not without its faults but not bad at all. That being said, the variety is terrible. Apparently, for some reason, at some point in the past, humans decided that songs about love were peak songwriting (evidently, I wasn’t invited to the debate). Like, there’s so many of them about the same shit, but people continue listening to them. I just don’t get. Other than that, this album is fine. Nothing to rave about, but it’s a relatively pleasant listen. I was expecting it to be worse, to be honest.
This was good and songs I knew. Was quite close to a 4.
Probably good but I just didn't care for it enough. Perhaps a different view on a different day.
OK, nothing original, but nicely delivered (mostly)!
Bright and soulful after getting dick punched by Throbbing Gristle yesterday
3.9
Great vocalist, but as a cover album I think the best songs on here have much better versions from the artists that made them famous tracks to begin with.
Early 60's classics
The music and genre are quite outdated for me. But the voice is very good.
Easy listen
She has a great voice, but the album wasn't anything special.
She's talented, but this doesn't resonate with me in a great way. I might give that other Dusty record another chance, though.
So many covers. She owns Wishin' and Hopin', but stole that one and Anyone Who Had a Heart from Dionne Warwick. It's a great intro album but her best comes later.
A decent oldies album. I like it, but I'm also not sure she needed at least two albums on this list.
I have a hard time rating an album of covers highly. However, she does a lot of these songs justice and there are a handful of really great tracks on here. Personal favorites are Wishin' and Hopin', 24 Hours from Tulsa, and When the Love Light. 6/10
Niets verrassend
I'm on the fence about this one. It's quite pleasant to listen ; Dusty has a great voice, and sounds sexy and soulful enough to make this kind of music work. The instrumental part is also well done. However, it's a pure product of its time - nothing groundbreaking or even surprising happens in this record. And considering it's basically a compilation of covers, the whole exercise feels a bit... pointless. It smells like a money-grab, with a selection of tunes that have just been repackaged and rebranded for the UK market without adding much to the originals. I enjoyed listening with my morning coffee, but I won't play it again. I almost gave it a 2*, but it's not that bad overall - just a bit trite. I also appreciate the fact that it's a short album (as was usually the case in the 50s and 60s). 5/10
It's impressive how well that English girl from the mid- 60's embraced soul music.
fine
I was so surprised by the amount of songs off of this album I already knew! She seems to me like 60's Adele.
A pretty voice singin some nice, simple songs. Not much more to it than that.
Feels like a Christmas album without the Christmas stuff. I can appreciate it in the same way I can appreciate Frank Sinatra.
really good 60's moodpiece. dusty's definitely got some pipes on her. Mama Said is a great opener. Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa plays vocally like a bit of broadway showtunes and it's very cool. stylistically she gets around, shows about as much range as i think you could in the genre in that decade. Wishin' And Hopin' is probably my favorite
Didn't know she was English.
Some great tunes Probably another 7/10
This is fine
Easy listening, entertaining, but not standout for me
A covers album huh? Nice. Well done. Sometimes I wish I knew why the album was important but whatever
What a confusing album. It's not bad, it's just all covers from what I can tell. Songs I already know and like better from their original singer. Dusty's voice is great, but I see no reason to listen to these over the originals. I'm a little disappointed to not hear original songs.
Helt ok karaoke-cover-album. God stemme.
YAS GIRL SING fs: you don't own me (ALWAYS)
Classics. Lacked a bit of consistency
Page of Cups. I always thought these songs were by a soul trio and not a white English woman. Really fun classics
Favourite song: will you love me tomorrow
6/10 – Decent
Luškan je, nisem vedla da ona poje You dont owe me, ni pa ne ki kar bi vec poslusala, mal dolgcas mi je
Dusty sounds amazing but like, the album itself is pretty unremarkable. Outside of You Don’t Own Me, I forgot most of them immediately after listening to them.
Dusty Springfield can sing, however this did not feel like something I absolutely had to listen to, I've heard a lot of these songs from the original singers/groups, would've preferred an album that wasn't 100% covers.
I dont like the way she's staring at me on the cover but she's got a good voice. There's a lot of energy in the album that makes it a good listen as compared to say, that Elvis album we did where everything just started to drag. Maybe its because all the songs are covers so she can puck the best ones I think old people can in fact make decent music!
I like the vibes of this album, except the songs feel too short. I really liked Summer is Over as the final song on the album, but this type of music isn’t really my thing. I can recognize that these are great songs and that she is a great singer, it’s just not my kind of music.
It's the height of the Motown era. She's trying to position herself within that. I was expecting it to be a watered down R&B. I was pleasantly surprised by how raw and unpolished it all was (especially Don't You Know). The sound is really good for the genre and the time, if you exclude the tracks added to the re-issue (like I Only Want to Be With You and the following ones). It's mixed like a film soundtrack, trying to make the songs sound like they're playing in the background. In short, it's easy to listen to, no real complaints about it, and I had a good time. It's not exactly groundbreaking, though.
A good generic album to play it in the background 3/5
It’s classic
Favorite Track: Wishin' and Hopin'
Pleasant, I swear this one had already come up though.
Very girl group. I didn’t know she did these songs, and it was good to be exposed to her versions.
quintessential blue-eyed soul. love any song under 3 min that is so sonically expansive. Adele's predecessor by nearly 50 years. I'm Gonna Leave you is a highlight
classic. not my usual but can appreciate.
Felt like a pretty average Dusty Springfield album. This means that it was good and that most people will probably like it.
Just not as good as the other one on here
what a voice, still not for me since other versions of some of these songs hit so much harder, 3 star since it's nice, but just not great.
Solid vocal but honestly not my thing overall.
This does a great job displaying her range and variety of styles.
This was an enjoyable listen. Almost sounds like it’s from the 50s rather than mid-60s. And perhaps I would’ve rated higher had it been presented much earlier on in the exercise because her vocal performance is passionate and pretty top notch. Hard to not think of Jim Carrey (Lloyd) singing Mockingbird in Dumb and Dumber too. But with the album being cover tunes I just can’t go any higher.
This was pretty enjoyable. But of a songbook, obviously. But hey, I bet we all had some fun with a few of these songs, and could do without some also.
I enjoyed this but gotta put a ceiling on rating an album of covers. Would have been much higher had that not been the case. 3.25/5
Joyful, fun. But after 5 or 6 songs, I wanted something a bit different, which never came. Still a great voice and art.
I was surprised that there were a lot of songs that I actually knew on this album. That being said, the vibe from the album wasn't what I enjoy. A lot of soft, dated ballads, while refreshing, isn't quiet what im into
Another album that is impossible to hate, yet equally hard for me to really love. Springfield indisputably has some amazing pipes, and the songs are well orchestrated. On the other hand, the mid-60s is not far enough removed from the 50s doo-wop era to be nostalgic. The song selection seems odd, but I assume the producer was appealing to a specific demographic that makes less sense in retrospect. In any event, this isn’t innovative in any way. For this album to hold up over decades, Springfield’s versions need to bring us something that others have not. While her voice is gorgeous, I’m not sure it is especially unique or superior to the many timeless jazz and Motown vocalists of the era. I do appreciate the authors of the book including debut albums of artists who would ultimately become iconic because we get to hear early glimpses of what they would become. I also give some leeway to such debut albums because it is unreasonable to expect them to have their own voice. Tough one to rate. This is my first Springfield, so maybe I’d appreciate it more if I can see where this ultimately ends up?
Did not enjoy this as much as Dusty In Memphis. A lot more barebones in a way that makes it far more obvious how much of the album is motown with the serial numbers filed off.
Sixties Dusty Springfield album
Great morning listen. Love you don’t own me
honestly just a cute lil 60's album full of mainly covers and some og songs. probably won't listen again idk... nothing too notable, but i understand why it's worth listening to since it reflects other albums of this time
Fun album a little cliche at parts but I enjoyed
This was a fun listen!
Cool record. A couple of songs I know and several new ones. Cool, specially for the time.
Was introduced to her with son of a preacher man, but only song I had known. Really happy to be introduced to more of her stuff!!
A few misses for me, but overall I liked this one. It reminds me of songs that will come on the jukebox at the beginning of a movie scene and are enjoyable for the first few seconds, then fade out as the characters start talking and you don’t hear it again. 3-3.5
I’ve heard a lot of these songs before, but I’m not sure that she wrote many or any of them. Not bad, an enjoyable but dated listen. Some tracks I feel definitely make good soundtracks
Good 50s style music. Unfortunate that most are covers, that may or may not be as good as the originals. Would be a hood playlist for a retro diner or bakery
Some gems! Some skips. Some new discoveries
Crazy to me how these all/mostly covers albums were so popular at the time, crazier still that they would be included in top album lists, and craziest of all that I found myself enjoying this album. I mean, I see it for what it is, but bonus stars because she has a killer voice.
Don’t like the idea
норм, но в чем прикол альбома каверов в списке лучших альбомов всего времени?
Crazy how many hits were on this. 3.5/5
She had a powerful voice, but I was never much of a fan for blue eyed soul. I liked some of her hits, especially “Will You Love Me Tomorrow.”
Good vocals, nice to just put on in the background for a 60s vibe
This was written for Dusty by Len Houmous after they met in 1951. Len was blown away by Dusty. In a very rare platonic way! We all know he is quite the lady’s man! 3.4 2/12 You Don’t Own Me
Sort of "fun" country? I can see why she had a following. Not really my thing, nothing will make my playlist, but I don't hate it, and it's not garbage like oh so much of this list is. With decimals, this is an easy 2.5. Better than a 2, not really a 3, so what will I give it? Let's go with a 3, it's Christmas week, a bit of generosity.
I’ve discovered this singer with Pet Shop Boys, and I really have enjoyed this album!
Good production she is a decent singer, but just doesn't have that great edge. Dusty is very blue eyed soul, there are a couple tracks that get close Nothing and Don't You Know. There are a few classics everyone has probably heard and the last half of the album is pretty good. I think it is decent but not amazing, not sure it is an album I would buy but a nice listen.

Like it
A pleasant album of 1960s R&B / Soul / Pop music. Dusty Springfield had a great voice and she sung with feeling, but as far as I can tell, all of the songs on this album - her debut - had already been hits for other artists. So why this album?
Ok!
The songs are well done, but most of them are covers. I don't know that this really needed to be on the list. I'm happy to have listened to it, but once you've heard one Dusty album you've heard them all. My Rating: 3/5
As was fairly typical at the time, the songs on this album had a variety of different songwriters, and some are just straight-up cover songs. Iconic voice that was able to mix soul, pop, & jazz and make it work.
шо я можу сказати, деякі пісні знайома мені класика, чудовий вокал але?? застаріло ай гесс
Good work here from Dusty. 3.5 stars
no originals, female elvis I only want to be with you
Fine album. Dusty’s got such a great voice, but the songs themselves were just okay. Already feels a bit outdated for the mid 60s.
5/10
I love her voice, still. But this album being songs stolen from soulful black singers doesn't help. White people...
Alright. Favorite track: You Don't Own Me
Okay…but just covers.
Pretty fun listen!
It's good
It's good music, not exactly essential listening.
Feels a bit odd that an album of covers would make it onto the list but Dusty's voice is one of my favourites and there are some absolute belters on here (You Don't Own Me)
This is the only Dusty Springfield album they needed on this list. Her voice is like good lovin.
4 stars for clearly being Amy Winehouses' Grandmother, but a point deduction for the 1997 re-release having 20 tracks(!) and feeling like "too much of a good thing" which should have been truncated.
Dusty Springfield – A Girl called Dusty 3 STARS I was tempted to give this four stars. All lovely songs sung beautifully, many of them among my favourite songs – Anyone Who had a Heart, for example. But while it enriched my morning, it didn’t rock my boat.
Mixed feelings on this record. On its face it's a great collection of soul and R&B songs performed and recorded well and Dusty Springfield has a great voice. But the original versions of most of these songs are just as good if not better so this kind of gives me some Pat Boone vibes. 2.75/5
Not bad actually. Pretty enjoyable listening considering how dated it sounds (even compared to 1964).
A catchy and fun listen
Smashing debut. Great production quality for its age as well. Live the older era tunes, and you can really hear future Dusty in there.
I'm not sure this is absolutely an album you need to hear before you die, but it's a good time. Dusty started out as a British folk singer, came to America and fell in love with soul music, giving voice to many storied composers of both white and black music. Depending on the song, the results could be maudlin or in the case of some Motown stompers, absolutely electric. This album was a collection of some of her favorite songs, and I think she had good taste. Her voice is well-suited to all the material, and the tracks here are well-produced (although it seems most of the songs on the in-print CD are alternate mixes of the songs on the original LP because the masters are buried deep somewhere in the Philips Record archives). Best song is the scorching album closer (not counting bonus tracks) "Don't You Know," which is an unquestionable improvement over the Ray Charles original, but "When The Love Light Starts Shining Thru His Eyes" and bonus track "Can I Get A Witness" are also great and she ably takes her turn on the Shirelles "Will You Love Me Tomorrow." Maybe not an essential listening experience, but enjoyable nonetheless.
I didn’t love or hate this, it’s a pretty forgettable 60’s cover album. I’m aware that Dusty has another album on the list, and I expect I’ll like that one better.
Kind of ambivalent about this one. Some good songs and arrangements but I can't help but think that her African-American counterparts in the US were doing this much better. Her voice is strong, just not as strong and distinctive as those coming out of Motown, Muscle Shoals, etc.
Great vocals as you'd expect, from Dusty and the backup singers too. I liked a good few songs here, like You Don't Own Me and I Only Want to be With You. But every damn song is just about how lovesick the narrator is, i get that that was just the 60s pop style but it gets really tiresome on a 20 track record. Was really ready for it to be finished a lot earlier
Fantastic voice backed by your typical 50-60s big band.
Not my style of music but it wasn't that boring. The type of music I picture you listen to while playing bingo on a sunday night.
Fairly good album, she has a great voice and there are some pretty memorable moments
Good songs, I can never fully respect the era of music where most songs were factory-produced for every other famous singer to perform their own version, but I also thought this was going to be a country album so clearly I don't know enough to speak I'll accept that my musical philosophy is stuck in the modern times and harbor mixed feelings but still appreciate this album
Starts off powerfully with Mama Said and especially You dont own me, and then becomes a bit generic, lost somewhere between decades. The album ends well with Anyone who had a heart, Will you love me , wishin and hopin. Standout track: Anyone who had a heart. It was enjoyable to listen, but not enough to make me want to dig deeper. 3.5 stars
solid but repetetive
A couple of tunes that have some interesting structure/rhythm (e.g. 24 hours from Tulsa). Reminds me of Little Nan
There are some brilliant cover versions on here and there are some alright cover versions on here too but overall the good outweighs the mediocre, and Dusty has a great voice.
I liked this way more than I thought I would. 3.5
Dusty’s got a nice voice. I loved the song Summer is Over; an excellent example of one of my favorite genres of music, last songs of albums.
I didn't know her and, after reading the presentation, didn't have high expectations but I ended up enjoying this one...
This was a nice listen, I had heard about her but never actually listened to her music before. I didn't know that the class "Ahora Te Puedes Marchar" by Lusi Miguel was a cover of a song on here.
I'll give this one a 3. Not my type of music at all but I can see why it is good for sure.
It was good I just don't think I'd seek it out on my own. 2.6 outta 5
very fun
She’s a really good singer.
I go back and forth on this album. Her voice is great. I just wished she would have done some original songs.
Good covers and probably could cut down on number of songs
If you like her voice and an album of 20 love songs then this is the album for you! I don’t.
so many familiar tracks on here. she's got such a great voice-depth & strength.
I get that albums in the 60s had lots of covers on them. I love Dusty's voice and her performances on these. I just don't think an album of songs originally made famous by other acts - literally every song on this album - can really stand on its own as a classic. In my mind this is a covers album, not an original album. One of the best cover albums I've heard, but not on the same level as musicians performing original material - or even performing songs written for them.
Some tracks are iconic Classics… Others I would be happy to never hear again
Solid debut from Dusty here. Is it essential listening for everyone? I don't know. I didn't think the album was anything outstanding. I like her singing and all, and appreciated the soul and R&B sound for sure. 3 / 5
Not bad, a lot of covers on here that I have heard before but by other artists. Nice to see Dusty's rendition of them. However, a lot of these songs have the same formula and sound to them and after a while it gets boring. 3/5 7.8/10
Classic 60s love female pop album
Easily consumable album. Every movie set in the 60s has a dusty Springfield song.
Solid album one could play when entertaining grandma and her bastard (grand) children. However I don’t think an album of covers can ever reach masterpiece status
Good album for sure, but not my thing. 3.5
It was okay I guess?
It's so nice to hear this album. It's a lot less old-fashioned than I expected.
classic
Change of pace from my other albums
She has a great voice, and it's a fun album/easy listening, but it's also a 60s covers album and kind of run-of-the-mill. 3.0/5.0: Good
I listen to She & Him quite often, so I'm already a fan of cover albums.. This album feels like one i'll listen to when i don't want to particularly listen close to an album. It's very enjoyable, but almost as background music.
Beautiful voice. Great songs.
I didn't know she was the one who did "You Don't Own Me” song. I like her deeper toned voice. Overall, an easy listen album.
This was a nice listen, with plenty of familiar songs (covered) and some new to me! Dusty Springfield has a fantastic voice and the doo-wop/pop style is pleasantly nostalgic—many of these tracks would not feel out of place on a Fallout soundtrack, in a good way! Best: "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" Worst: "My Colouring Book"
I was prepared to hate this, but it's actually a collection of some pretty good classic songs sung by an appealing voice (there's a little bit of Janis in Dusty Springfield - who knew?). I mean, I'm not gonna be bumpin' "Do Re Mi" with the windows down on a warm summer day, but the degree to which many of these songs have become embedded in the cultural lexicon makes this album at least a . . .
Damn, if I ran an oldies station for wealthy Boomers, I'd play this all the time. But, despite Dusty being very clearly a fantastic talent, this isn't anything I would listen to but for this website. If I had to choose between female Brit singers from the 60s, I'd pick Marianne Faithful. This stuff is too soul or pop or whatever for me to enjoy or listen to again.
I was happy to listen to this since I knew the name but had never really listened to her music. Until yesterday, I didn’t even know she was British. With that said, most of the songs that I knew are better in other versions, like the Shirelles’ Will You Love Me or Georgie Fame’s Do Re Mi. I rounded up to 3 stars on the strength of Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa. I had never heard that and loved it.
3/5 - I don't really get this choice for the list, but sure. I like these songs. I like Dusty's voice, but is this here for the compactness of hearing so many oldies in one shot? That said, I listened to this twice no problem, and had a good time the whole way through.
I love Dusty... this isnt the album that you NEED to hear from her. This on its best day is the 3rd best album in her catalog.
Very enjoyable overall. Rating drops here generally since this album is relatively one dimensional. Well crafted but just loses steam for me after 2/3 or so. Would still listen again though!
Good intro to Dusty, some good versions of classic oldies.
Classic 60s beat music with positive vibes.
Front half of the album is pretty good, lots of soul and showcases Dusty's voice well. The back half has a lot more 50's era pop songs, which aren't as good. Overall a decent listen.
12 songs of one of Britain's finest vocalists giving it her all. Dusty Springfield's debut studio album, 'A Girl Called Dusty', propelled her straight to the top 10 of the British charts with a voice full of character and feel. While she didn't write her own songs [something she had in common with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and our very own John Farnham], Dusty Springfield had a seasoned voice from the get-go, which justified her immediate rise to fame. This album is basically sweet, safe 60s pop performed by one of the finest voices of her generation. By the book and inoffensive. Happy music that a number of people would've certainly celebrated in the 60s. Best songs: When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes, My Colouring Book
later
This was okay, good pop vibes of the era and a few good songs. But it wasn’t “blow me away” good.
A stone cold classic from the jump
shocked to hear that this isn't a motown album - it's got the vibes and everything (she prob did take it from black artists in retrospect). such a nice album to listen nevertheless, a bit of everything from the 60's
The things that would make this album special are diminished by the fact that it is mostly full of cover songs by black artists. No doubt that she is a great singer and leads women in music forward in this era. Not a bad listen though.
Fun album.
She can sing and this is very listenable but it makes me long for the original versions when she does soul songs. I kinda prefer the poppy girl group ones on this.
What a voice😄. The woman has soul. Just imagining what she would be doing in the R&B world in this era 🤔
Lots of covers I recognize from Dusty. Mockingbird makes me think of Dumb and Dummer
Love this production. Beautiful analog 60’s ear candy.
About what I expected. Overall decent.
This is what a diner trying too hard to be retro sounds like.
The only thing interesting that I can tell you about this is that I was surprised when 'You Don't Own Me' started playing. It make me believe it was written by her. However, I was even more surprised when I realized that there is not a single original song in here. I shouldn't be shocked really, as this was a common thing back in those days, but I guess I got my hopes up listening to the mentioned track. Does it make it bad? Not really, as she is a really good singer and all the songs sound very sweet and charming, but I'm not familiar with the original songs, so I can't make any comparison between them. If the material here turns out to be blatant copies of the original, it could impact very negatively the score. Nevertheless, I don't have the time to check them out, so for now it gets a positive rating.
She's clearly a great great singer. The beginning of American Soul's influence in Britain's pop scene is interesting but no reason I needed to hear this. Dusty in Memphis is plenty to get the picture. She gets one extra star because she was so insecure and I want her ghost to know I think she was awesome.
Decent album! It starts off well, then dips a little with some forgettable songs, but then closes with a few good ones.
Pros: Fun, short Cons: Boring, Cover Album
It was cool, nice background music. Colleen got excited about You Don’t Own Me. Overall, fine
Thought I hadn’t heard this before but was familiar with more than half the songs. Much better than I thought it would be based on the description and album art.
a bitch named dusty
usually my thing, but fell a little flat. Dusty is right...
Um álbum bem interessante. Tem uma levada dançante que me surpreendeu (não conhecia). QoA Vesper.
Nice to hear
I don’t get why a cover album made it onto the 1001 Albums list. In terms of originality and impact on the music industry, it’s a 2-star effort at best. But credit where it’s due she’s a damn good singer. I can’t go lower than a 7/10 for the performance alone.
Good just not the vibe for the moment. Sunny day gardening type music.
There is no denying that Dusty had an amazing voice. I feel that this album has been put together purely for an American market (could be wrong) and doesnt adequately show of her vocals. Still has some great tunes.
Quite liked it, not as much as Dusty In Memphis but generally find that Dusty has a wonderful voice, the production of the songs are great and she's very compelling.
Perfectly listenable but not really my thing.
I should have liked this album but... I didn't find it interesting. It is not bad though. I just didn't enjoy it so much, it feels like some covers all together without much sense. And maybe it really is that way.
Not my thing
Cover 7 Pretty surprised but I like this album more then I thought I would.
Favs: You Don't Owe Me, My Colouring Book, Nothing, I Only Want to Be With You
Favs: You Don't Own Me, Anyone Who Had A Heart, Wishin and Hopin
A la playlist: You Don't Own Me, Will You Love Me Tomorrow.
Classic songs, sung well. Nothing more than that but it's very nice
Had a great time listening to this, a few of the soul songs on here have better versions but this seems a minor quibble. Great voice and wonderful songs.
Enjoyed it. Transitional music from 50s to 60s. Wicked voice. Bi icon too 👌
I have always loved Dusty Springfield, or at least I thought so. I was rather disappointed by this album. It doesn't sound very novel for 1964, and Dusty just sings (all respect to singers) other people's compositions. And I don't like the songs very much, at least most of them (there are good ones, You Don't Own Me; Wishing and Hoping). I still like her voice though, and it all sounds filmic. I just like her later songs better. This is only, an being generous, a 3.
3/5 Just a fun cute little jam album. Nothing extremely special or bad about it. Some famous covers, some new songs. Enjoyable.
2,8/5
Great voice, a lot of great songs. But just read these are all covers. Can only give a 3
This was split. It sounded great, but it was just a great sounding collection of covers. That’s great, and I love some covers, but I don’t see why I need to hear this before I sleep the eternal sleep.
Standouts You Don't Own Me Will You Love Me Tomorrow I Only Want To Be With You
Blue eyed soul- let’s go. Dusty has an incredible voice. Her tone is amazing and her delivery is clear and strong and passionate. She clearly loves soul music. And the production is excellent. It sounds like Phillips Records spent a lot of dough making Dusty sound as good as possible. She really shines with the faux-Phil Spector wall of sound going on around her. All that being said - I hate a lot of these songs. They are just miserable. "Wishin and Hopin" drives me bananas, "Do Re Mi" has an incredibly annoying and repetitive melody, and the more well-known songs I've heard a million times against my will and bore me to tears. "My Colouring Book" is bizarre, as is the arrangment of "Mockingbird." So overall, this album succeeds at what it sets out to do, and Dusty's voice is great. I can leave the rest. THREE STARS
Solid and enjoyable Blue-Eyed-Soul. It's good stuff, but I don't think blazes many trails.
Music that transports you to the era it was made. Dusty sure could belt 'er!
Turns out I have no idea who Dusty Springfield is.
I only knew Dusty Springfield's hits, so I appreciated digging into an album, even if it was annoyingly repetitive. I blame it on the style of the time, but every song is either pining for love, sad about love, or talking about love in some capacity. Maybe that's why my favorite song of the bunch is "Summer is Over." Also, I'm curious...Dusty Springfield had an incredible voice. She was also a blonde white woman who sounded Black. I wonder how much of her success came from white America's comfort with a white person making this music?
Why covers? She has a lovely great voice but you're having do cover songs. She does them quite well. Can you imagine if they introduced the world to Brittney Spears with a cover album? Apparently that's what they did at the time. She has a great voice & does a great job of these covers.
I like it. I bet she had men swooning. It’s powerful and romantic and it’s great. It’s catchy and classy. It makes love and emotions seem like quite a simple and brilliant thing. One day when I’m hopelessly in love, I’ll listen to this. God, I’ll never get tired of love songs.
This one was a little tough. It’s so trite now but leading edge sound at the time
Great voice, but the music, while nice, isn’t anything particularly groundbreaking or memorable. Also not a big fan of cover albums, with you don’t own me especially I was just wishing I was listening to Leslie Gore’s version.
My grandmother would go wild
An amazing voice give mostly crap to sing. Some of it is fun but it comes across as a corporate designed advertising campaign to try and produce a vinyl girlfriend for the masses.
This wasn’t bad. It made me want to watch My Best Friends Wedding again more than repeat the album. So a net positive.
Pretty good, she has a great voice for sure and some of these I've heard before. Overall a 3 for me
A difficult album to rate. Her voice is great, but these are all covers. Album is a bit long as well. I feel like it’s a 2.5.
Some absolute classics on here. Good songs but I don't really enjoy her vocals so not an album I'd listen to
Debut album by Dusty. Seemingly sunny on the surface but in these songs there's heartbreak and darkness (and maybe the first feminist anthem?). The sun is covered by clouds as you listen to this album. Great 60's pop - even Harry and Lloyd couldn't ruin this album. Best Tracks: Mama Said; You Don't Own Me; Will You Love Me Tomorrow
Do i like Dusty Springfield or do i like the best of dusty springfield. I suspect ill know after this album. I like Dusty, or maybe i like the producer. I imagine that person had a big input into this debut album. Its just good pop, solid backing band who dont stand out, dont shy back when needed, just do their job. Her voice is powerful but she uses it well, bits of light and shade, conveys emotions and feelings. Not all bangers like Anyone Who Had A Heart, but quite. Few of them are and while hou’ve probably heard othwr versions of many of these, hers are recognisable. The question for me on the rating comes down to how much does it add to the sum of knowledge of music. Not her songs (at least 1 Burt Bacharach song here i think) and arguably along with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Clapton, another example if a British muso stealing American music, repackaging and selling to the masses. I supose thats what happens when you dont have the internet. Still a three star effort i think.
waw, not the type of music I usually listen to, but I really enjoyed it (3.5 stars)
This was kind of a fun listen
TBH I expected to like this way less than I did. I mean, is just a collection of covers (I think) of popular songs, but at the same time has tight musicianship! That's what I like about these 60s records... even in a standard soft vocal jazz album, you'd find a backing band that crushes it. Nowadays everything is overproduced shit and plastic. By the way I'm finding myself coming back to these album even if I discovered it just a few days ago. Good good good.
I knew Dusty Springfield's voice from "Son of a Preacher Man" on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Strong, soulful, and sassy, so this was definitely an enjoyable listen. I'm not sure I can say that it's groundbreaking or earth shattering since these are cover songs, but it was definitely fun to listen to.
Enjoyed a lot of this, actually liked it more than the other Dusty album on the list. The fact that some of the best songs on the album are covers holds it back from a 4th star for me though.
I liked the other Dusty album I listened to, but this... I dunno, it just didn't do much for me. Maybe because the songs were largely covers, and I have heard the originals and like them more. Dusty still is a great singer, but this one just doesn't work for me.
Rating: 6/10 Thought this was going to be a country album, pleasantly surprised to hear it was a pop album. Pretty good.
Good stuff, some classics. Wasn't until the extended album track Can I Get a Witness that I was able to name the attempt to bring a white voice to these songs.
C'est pas mauvais, mais ya rien qui ressort par rapport à la centaine de chanteuses du début des années 60.
Comparing this to Dusty In Memphis, which coincidentally was the previous album I got, it doesn't really quite match it. It's clear her voice is phenomenal on her debut too, but it's more refined later in her career. Her music also benefitted from writing her own music rather than doing covers
Dusty has a great voice with a lot of soul. She also worked with some great song writers. I think Dusty is a bit underrated nowadays. In the '60s she was very popular. But her style of music has waned some in popularity, so there's that. Also, while this is a very good album, and maybe it's here because it's her debut, but she has better. 3 stars.
The only Dusty Springfield song that I was familiar with was Son of a Preacher Man. After hearing this album, I agree that she is a very talented vocalist. But as others have pointed out, it’s an album of covers, and in my opinion, some of them haven’t aged very well. It gets 3 stars from me.
Solid but almost entirely a cover album
Big, catchy, and pretty fun. That 60s sound is nice but a little overwhelming.
look, i love dusty springfield. i think she has an incredible voice and her songs are some of my favorites of the era. this album is what i would consider inessential. as is par for the course for the era, all of these songs are mostly covers and/or songs written by professional songwriters. i'm not going to knock the album for that, it's just how the music industry was in 1965. what i will knock is that nearly every version on this album is worse than the original hit version. for instance, dusty's version of 'you don't own me' does not hold a candle to lesley gore's, her version of 'mockingbird' does not stand up to inez and charlie foxx's, her version of 'anyone who had a heart' does not compete with dionne warwick's. the only song here that i feel is worth listening to is her hit version of 'wishin and hopin' which i also don't think warrants the entire album being on this list. she has a great voice! but not sure that justifies the inclusion of this one.
sweet
A bit long but pretty fun for about 30 minutes
Of course, I already knew Dusty Springfield, but not her debut album “A Girl Called Dusty.” But even here, she already offers what she is still known for today, namely the classic swinging 60s sound, which can be placed somewhere between Broadway, Motown, soul, and European pop and folk music, with interpretations that are characterized by her unmistakable voice. In addition to “Mama Said” and “Don't You Know,” I like “Nothing” — Dusty's only (!) original composition on this album. Not bad!
Great voice for sure. It's obvious what an influence she is on contemporary British blue-eyed soul singers like Adele and Amy Winehouse. 3/5 #172
First listen
A pleasant collection of 60s pop songs that seem to draw quite heavily from Motown. Unfortunately it doesn't feel especially notable outside of being Dusty Springfield's debut record.
So good. More soulful than I was expecting.
Dusty had some real hits back in her day!
Preach it girl
This sounds classic, which I mean both as a compliment and complaint. She sounds great and these songs individually sound great, but 20+ minutes of this consecutively is a bit rough. These all definitely warm there spot on a golden oldies playlist, but that just isn’t really something I’m interested in listening to
I liked it, but also made me sad she only got to sing about dudes she was banging or wanted to. Give me some Dusty with some depth!
The best tracks are covers (which aren't better than the originals).
Great voice on Dusty Springfield. Not a lot of original songs on the album, but this was common for the time.
I am always very skeptical of blue-eyed soul but it seems like Dusty was a real one. Despite not being a huge "Rock n' Roll" fan, her incredible voice carried the album along with the ballads and soul arrangements.
Really disappointing to hear Mockingbird without Dumb & Dumber signing over it, but otherwise fine.
Some of it is a little bit dated, but a couple of classics in there.
3.75 so many hits!
Such a great voice wasted on random covers. Dusty in Memphis is so much better.
Okay. Lots of very 60s sounding pop songs.
This was pretty pleasant and fun to listen to. Nothing groundbreaking since it's all covers. Makes me want to jump in a convertible and go pick up my date who's wearing a poodle skirt ⭐⭐⭐
This is a nice and somewhat innocent record - a type that you seem to hardly find today anymore. It is not that I miss similar contemporary albums, but it was a nice change of pace (not more). Highlights: „Anyone who had a heart“ could easily be her Bond song. And I found that her voice shined the Most in „Twenty-four hours from Tulsa“
3.5 Ніколи не слухав її альбомами, а насправді доволі класна музика. Сподобалось.
This is a covers album but I actually enjoyed hearing a greatest hits cover album.
lo escuché de fondo no es tanto mi onda sorprendió un toque luis miguel saco un tema de aca bastante bien
Pretty straightforward 60s soulful pop. By now it's not the most popular type of pop, but it's not bad at all. She can sing pretty well, and the instrumental are quite nice. The mixes are a bit mediocre and flat, but it's to be expected given the age of the recording. The best songs were "You Don't Own Me", "Anyone Who Had A Heart" and "When The Love Starts Shining Through His Eyes'". The rest aren't bad, just kind of generic.
HAHAHAHA waaaaauw! FAVO: You don't own me, When the love starts shining through, I only want to be with you(lternate version)
Some good tunes here that I knew from later covers.
Enjoyed it!
It's enjoyable but it's not something I'd come back to. However where this album (or more so Dusty Springfield) really shines is if you're a producer and looking for samples...this album has a lot of fantastic stuff you could sample into some very interesting beats.
Dusty Springfield was BRITISH?! Amy Whitehouse makes so much more sense now. Also this album reminds me of my stepmom, who we used to goad into doing the Pony to entertain us at breakfast. She'd get this maniac glint in her eye like she was back at a high school sockhop, murdering all of her classmates, as she cantered around the kitchen in her slippers. She's dead now too.
Rock and roll, pas mal mais pas non plus fou
Meh. Pretty average 60s pop.
A really good voice but I don't like most of the songs. 3 stars or C.
Album was not bad per se, think the sounds were just a little too 1960s for me. Enjoyed the you don’t own me version.
Diva
La fille a beaucoup de hits mais on dirait qu’elle a couver plein de toune d’artiste afro-américain et à donner aucun credz
Elle chante bien et l'instrumental est passable.
Favorites: Mama Said You Don't Own Me Do Re Mi Nothing Will You Love Me Tomorrow Wishin' and Hopin' I Only Want To Be With You - Alternate Mix Every Day I Have To Cry Summer Is Over Album starts well (first 3 songs), then dips until the halfway mark. The rest is solid and very catchy.
Did not previously know who sang these songs. They are familiar.
This album by Dusty Springfield wasnt too bad. There were some really good songs, but most of it is typical of the era
Mama said is a stand out track. When summer ends. Generally liked the vibe, though it slowed down a bit in the middle.
good voice + songs, few standouts but unfair to rate since it‘s only covers
A great sound, but I often found myself wishing I were listening to the original versions
Quite good. It had a lot of old school charm. Would listen again if i was in an old school mood. No songs really stoos out as a song that you would remember the album by thouh
Retro radio vibes.
Some great singing on here, and great songwriting too. But at the end of the day, it's a covers album. Not really sure if it's innovative enough to be on here.
A feel good album. Males me think of wedding receptions and family parties.
This was good, I think I'd rate it higher if I was walking with it on headphones. Great covers, stayed the right side of schmaltz, the tracks are big which her voice demands. Solid 3, on another day could have been a 4.
Nice mix of pop and soul. Lovely voice.
Feel about the same as the last Dusty album on this list. Very nice, but doesn't grab me.
Dusty Springfield
I really liked it and was surprised at how many songs I recognized. The album was just too long
Liker godt stemmen hennes og er litt svak for hvordan de brukte orkester i popmusikken i den perioden. Ikke de sterkeste melodiene, men hun gjør maksimalt ut av materialet.
She had a velvet voice. strong debut album this with some nice pop tunes & ballads. Despite going on and having a helluva career she was such a troubled soul, really sad when you look into her world, her struggles with alcohol, drugs, her sexuality & how the music world/media judged her and then to have it all cut short at 59 years old. The girl could sing, RIP Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien.
Triple denim blue eyed soul. But with a lot of covers. What a wonderful voice. It sent me to 80s Dusty and I loved her reinvention with the PSB. This album was lovely and the standout track was Wishin' and Hopin' Also, I did not know she was british! Go figure!
