All killer no filler!
Lovely. A great voice, a few classics
My new go-to 60s vibe album. Glorious.
Dusty leaves her roots and embraces soul and lets her voice rip. Great album, even though it has a lot of covers.
Me sorprendió, me gustó mucho y no sabía quién era esta mujer
classsssic old school pop - 4
Great voice, great songs, and only a few of them that I knew before listening. Oldest album so far, and first solo artist and female vocalist
bloody enjoyable record this. Maybe longer than it needs to be la lovely relaxing listen. 4/5
Loved it! A total classic - this is another one of those albums that I've listened to and heard song after song that I recognized but never knew who sang it. Definitely will listen again. Great Sunday morning vibe.
Didn't realize I liked her, great album.
Dusty Springfield's first album sees her stepping into a Blue-Eyed Soul style. Her performance is commanding and confident. I'm not terribly familiar with her work but I find it interesting that like the Beatles, we see the influence of Black music on an English artist. Her voice on 'Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa' is soaring and was the first track to really click for me. Though some of the song choices are confusing to me, her studio recordings are energetic and exciting.
A me questo disco ha sorpreso ed è piaciuto. Lo stile di Dusty mi piace e sento molto soul nella sua voce anche se non necessariamente nelle melodie. Si sentono gli anni 60 ma in maniera estremamente positiva e non stucchevole.
I was familiar with almost all of the songs. Good times great oldies.
A remarkable collection of well known songs, many with a Motown influence. Dusty's voice is incredible.
An entire album of famous hits I've heard before. Didn't realize these songs were all hers. The only one I knew for sure was "Son of a Preacher Man" and that's not even on this album.
Lekker vrolijk Uptempo 4/5
What a voice, love the classic arrangements and sound
Chill album. Good classics. Puts you in a good mood
today this album is great for background music. Warm, funny, great for this time of the year
Not my favorite female voice of the genre, but the chick had guts.
🖤 Favourite Songs: Mama Said & Mockingbird 🖤
Lots of great songs I already knew but refreshingly lots of great songs I didn't. Favourite track: summer is over
Great tunes throughout - loved this
Really enjoyable. I had only really been familiar with her hits, and this album was a pleasant surprise that really showcased her talent and had a more old-school flavor. Would listen again
Purezza anni '60
This is good stuff!
Some great songs
wauw, deze kan ik blijven luisteren
Fun. Good cooking tunes 💃
Fijne stem, energieke muziek.
Another album that I was surprised how many songs I recognized - although not always Dusty's version. I believe she did a bunch of covers and also covered things. Probably 3-3.5 stars for the music itself - would be a nice album to have on in the background where it is nice to listen to but can also just be nice noise to have around, with a round up for impact
Dusty’s vocals are great, lovely production. Very enjoyable.
7. Coloring book doesn't fit in well to an iambic meter, and this album has not convinced me otherwise.
Another comp? Some classic tunes though
What a lovely uplifting wonderful soul album
Love her voice, the blend of soul and Americana
Dusty. What else can you say? These are some of the biggest hits of the 60s. Countlessly covered, remixed, reused, recycled, and replayed. Do Re Mi is the album's low point, but I'm not sure if I can isolate its high point. It's all so good! I'm partial to Wishin and Hopin.
con ritmo pegadizo y alegre
I love her oh my goodness
There were a lot of songs on this album I was familiar with but couldn't tell you they were by Dusty Springfield. It was a fun listen. I enjoyed it.
Nice, very classy
Really dig this
good
I loved it
Good album. Expected country from the name Dusty, but I was WRONG. Here are some good sixties bops
I've already known some of the songs. Really good 60's pop.
Really good, great voice, and second-best Mockingbird rendition of all time
Classics. Her voice is amazing
it’s so weird how well this British woman did Motown Fav track: mockingbird
Good blue eyed soul album. Timeless? Maybe not but a fun listen every now and then.
4 of the songs are unavailable on spotify. I decided to listen to it on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzSI9js1nGQ&list=PLowQCq3Ss89g7z4hUKG5BN8M_9R8TcD6T
Had no idea who Dusty Springfield was and was pleasantly surprised to hear familiar beats and songs throughout her album, which somehow wasn’t on Spotify so I just found the track list online and went through each song in a queue. Definitely would recommend if you’re into classical music!
Lots of catchy ass tunes I’ve heard before but didn’t know were Dusty. Pleasantly surprised!
Cool stuff
Apparently I like Dusty Springfield
Ganz gut.
Live it Up made me think of Locomotion - haha. I’ll be honest, with a name like Dusty Springfield, I thought it was going to be more country sounding even though I knew deep down it wasn’t. I enjoyed this. Nothing necessarily profound but pretty fun. Given that this is her first album, I’d say pretty strong debut.
I’m in love with Dusty.
Good album with some standout songs but it dragged on for a little too long. It would be better if it didn’t have 20 songs 8.1/10
Pretty good album with no big misses. It gets repetitive sometimes but some song really stood out
8.1/10
Go feeling på detta.
Not available on Spotify USA. Recreated using the American versions, but in this case, I think the US albums are better, including the singles/B-sides. Fantastic album either way. You Don’t Own Me, 24 Hours, and Nothing are all great. US ‘version’ is a 5 star.
Any Good?
Brilliant voice.
Cool tjej och en uppenbar inspiration och förebild för många kommande Norhern Soul-artister!
Quality old school classics
It's well sung and has good music in, but it is on the generic side of things. When The Love Starts Shining Thru His Eyes, Nothing and Anyone Who Had A Heart were my highlights
Not my kind of music, personally, but I can appreciate Dusty Springfield's lasting impact on music
it's alright
Fine, simple. a few notable tracks off the top then its perfectly fine 60's after that. 6/10
I hadn’t heard of her, so this was interesting. An album from the 60s that sounds like the 50s. I read that these are mostly or all covers. And there are some classic good songs in here. Kind of liked them.
She has a pretty voice. It’s a lot of covers though which feels odd
Perfectly fine
maybe in 1964 it was tuff
good
you don't own me is iconic
Nice, recognisable swinging 60s tunes.
Amazing voice but I had a hard time really liking this album
I was really looking forward to this one. This is the second and final Dusty Springfield album I have now heard for this project, following one of her later albums, Dusty In Memphis. I gave that album a 4, and I’d still give it a 4 today. It sounds timeless, and Dusty has a truly remarkable voice that I could always listen to. Unfortunately, by comparison, this album sounds tremendously dated and I’m not going to remember a lot of it, like I did for the previous album. It is her debut album, and it’s a hell of a debut, but this sounds like it could have honestly released in the 50’s and I wouldn’t have batted an eye. Which is especially funny when considering Dusty In Memphis was just a few years after this. Something amazing must have happened, because my God did she find her way to make that one excellent. What this album still has going for it is Dusty’s voice. It’s great in every song, and if you only care about the singing, you might as well give this a 5 now. She may have the coolest voice for a female singer I’ve heard so far on the bot. Not to say that the instrumentation is lacking. It’s also great, especially on my favorite song on the album, the closer “Summer Is Over”. What a fantastic song!! Good enough to add to my frequent rotation, my first add in what feels like over 2 weeks. That song really brings the singing and instruments together nicely, and closes the album on a very high note. However, as a whole, I just don’t think this album is as good as her other one in the book, if that wasn’t already made clear enough. Too dated. Just a bit too old fashioned and maybe even a bit too happy sounding for me, if that makes any amount of sense. That might be a positive for some, but I think adding more songs with the depth of “Summer Is Over” would have greatly suited the album. Now, I also want to point out that I am far from disappointed in this album. It’s her debut, it is a few years younger than the other one, but also further exemplifies just how much a person can grow in such a short amount of time vocally, and still sound fantastic while showing clear signs of improvement. For that reason, I’m very happy to have had the chance to listen to this album today. It’s a great foundation to build off of, and evidently she did just fine for herself after this. For a debut album, it’s great, even if it does sound a little dated. A very solid middle 3 out of 5, and even a new song for the frequent rotation. That’s always cool. Good job again Dusty, I wish I could experience more of your music on the site, but the selections are already good enough as they are. Two very solid albums.
hell yeah girl
I love her voice, but didn't resonate with the album.
Dusty walked so Adele could run. I still enjoy Adele a lot more but I appreciate Dusty's vocals and her melodies.
Aika perus svengiä, soulia, kyseisen aikakauden poppia. Pölysellä hyvä saundi ja menevää musiikkia. Varmasti on ollu 60-luvulla kovinkin tanssittavaa musiikkia, mut menee nykykorville vähän same old kategoriaan. Ei säväyttänyt erityisemmin, mutta kuunteli kuitenkin ihan mielellään.
What a voice and delivery - reminds me of Mina in a way
A little same same but she has a great voice
It was good
pretty voice, some well remembered classics. nice that i will now be able to identify some more radio 2 songs. hooray!
was a bit of a chore to finish, I’m sure she’s exactly like Adele but in the 1960s. Good at what she does, but not for me
It was certainly common to have white singers cover or perform songs by black artists back then… and this is a prime example of it. Kind of strange to have an album of covers included in this list, but there’s no question that Dusty’s voice is iconic. Maybe that’s why.
Pretty decent record. Sounds like something you'd hear shopping, inoffensive but ultimately not too exciting. She has a nice voice which is definitely the highlight of the record.
no me encantó pero igual lo disfruté. muchos covers ! 3/5.
Listening session: june 21th, while chilling on our balcony in Sicily Listened to before: heard two songs before Thoughts: this album is a nice 60s vibe and I like Dusty Springfield’s voice but for some reason I don’t find this album really memorable Favourite tracks: You Don’t Own Me, Wishin’ And Hopin’ & Summer Is Over
Really nice but didn’t blow me away. Mockingbird gave me memories of Dumb & Dumber.
Honestly it was a lot better than I thought it would be. Dusty Springfield is one of those names that sounds familiar but I know nothing else about. A lot of those songs sound like they could be James Bond intro credits songs.
Fun sounds, fun covers, cool name.
Some of these songs are nostalgic for me and her voice is amazing but the album overall was just ok.
One of the queens of blue-eyed-soul. Some standards and nice numbers but still far from the maturity and adventurousness of Dusty in Memphis.
neutral
What is there to say about the woman that set the standard for female solo artists, especially for white soul. The start of a relationship between her and Bacharach and whatshisface. Her first solo record is solid and does suffer from the production at the time. I particularly enjoyed Mockingbird; When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes; Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa; and Anyone Who Had a Heart.
Liked it more than I thought I would
Basic ig
not as good as dusty in memphis... she has an amazing voice though
A fairly long list (noting I listened to the Expanded Edition) of Dusty, singing (presumably mostly) covers. I knew several of them, in any case. Quite a nice record, she does / did have an incredible voice; but essential listening why?
Americana by an extremely talented Brit. I enjoyed my time with it. Her cover tracks were absolutely solid.
Enjoyed my time with it. She’s got a good voice, powerful at times and showcased that in Don’t You Know.
It was fine, just not for me. Couple of great hits on there though
seemed like it was all covers of songs i already knew
England's greatest soul singer?
Very generic and very much of its time. I guess you have to put some Dusty Springfield album on the list, she has a great voice after all and is a very well known singer. Glad to get the opportunity to have a listen, bit I won't be putting it back on any time soon. There's a couple of really good songs that I recognised.
Punto a favor, no es muy largo. Punto en contra, es otro disco de country. Igual fue bastante tolerable, estoy siendo demasiado exigente la verdad. 5/10
Didn't hate it, she's got a superb voice. Just didn't blow my socks off. 3 stars.
Soul Favorite Tracks: You Don’t Own Me, Wishin’ and Hoppin’ Least Favorite Tracks: Mockingbird, Will You Love Me Tomorrow This album is a list of covers, and honestly, I’d prefer the originals for most of the time (the only exception being Wishin’ and Hopin’). That isn’t to say that I don’t hate her voice, but it definitely felt off-putting. 5/10.
Great voice and tunes but nothing caught my ear too much.
I like it, it’s music of a particular time and place, but it doesn’t particularly wow me. Perhaps it’s because I’m partial to Lesley Gore’s rendition of “You Don’t Own Me”. She does have a bit of a rock and roll voice for someone who didn’t sing rock and roll music, which is cool.
Buon album, non il mio genere peró anche se molte canzoni sono cover mi sono comunque piaciute
I knew a lot of songs on this, but I didn’t necessarily know her version of the songs. The only one I knew as hers for sure was Wishin’ and Hopin’ which I really like. I also knew the songs Mama Said, You Don’t Own Me, Mockingbird, Anyone Who Had a Heart, and Will You Love Me Tomorrow.
I had forgotten that Dusty wasn't country music. This had a soulful quality, that reminded me a bit of Amy Winehouse, though obviously a predecessor.
Good album, not my genre
Soul-ish
Super great singing and voice. The music is very lost to that time and era though. Very outdated. But I liked the simple, cute songs.
Great voice. Typical early 60s sound
Better than Coldplay
This is a lovely album of soul covers by a talented vocalist with a beautiful voice. It's not a masterpiece or anything but it is a deeply enjoyable album that is of its time.
This is fine, nothing special. If I'm correct this is pretty much all cover? So I'm confused why this is on the list at all. Dusty still sounds great, but I don't get what the point of including this here is. Fav Track: Will You Love Me Tomorrow
Sympa au début, après je trouve que tout se ressemble un peu
Catchy as hell
I'm a bit of a Dusty fan. I'm also aware of views that this album was only slapped together to cash in on a single, and the 1001 should've included an OG girl group album, not a collection of rip-offs. Anyway. I like the versions here of You Don't Own Me and Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa, and I like this Wishin' and Hopin' better than Dionne Warwick's, but the rest are disappointing (for songs I knew) or seem irrelevant. Some of the arrangements leave no room for subtlety in the singing. Conclusion: Ms Springfield can certainly sing, but this is indeed an incoherent album. It's a Mix of Good and Bad, 5/10.
I enjoyed Dusty’s voice on this album and the songs were pleasant enough - I can imagine it going down really well on a chilled Sunday morning. But overall I felt the flow of the album become quite dull as it progressed, and no particular songs stood out as exceptional for me. It’s a good old-school, soulful listen, but nothing spectacular. 6/10.
Nothing fancy, but that's not needed for the original queen of British blue-eyes soul. Dusty's voice is just so unique, so smooth yet smoky, and the arrangements of girl group classics layer in a level of cabaret at times that is just infectious. It's uneven but when it's good it's really really good.
A pleasant surprise this one. I was afraid it's going to be a country album (solely based on the artist name), but it's absolutely not! Terrific voice, very good songs. If this kind of music was my thing I'd rate it higher.
not the best, but not bad, i can see the appeal behind it
My second helping of Dusty in the space of a week. Again, great voice but this time the album is chocked full of covers, as good as some of those songs are. The album feels quite long coming in close to an hour with 20 tracks, which, when compared to Dusty in Memphis is a significant increase. Nonetheless, I did enjoy this but doubt I’d return.
Good stuff, not my general style, but good stuff. She had a hell.of a voice, and her appearance in Alan Moore's 'Jerusalum' will always color how I think of her. 🤣
A mixture of some classic tunes (24Hrs from Tulsa, Wishin' and Hopin', I Only Want To Be With You, Can I Get A Witness), along with some pretty naff early 60s songwriting (Do Re Mi and My Colouring Book). Pretty amazing for a debut (although she had been around for a while in a couple of groups prior to this), but then she had some of the best songwriters in the business at her beck and call, with a voice to suit.
Decent, was surprised to see a cover of “You don’t own me”. I had a fav track but kinda forgot which one it is so. High 3
vocals. iconic. mo town? pop?
Was going to say 4 stars because it’s an amazing collection of a lot of great songs. Production great.
One of my favorite voices of that era. Preferred her other albums, but some solid covers on here. 3.5/5
Cool. Great. She’s great. Not sure why it’s special. Sounds comparable to any number of Motown classics. !!WTF?!?!! She’s a Brit??! Holy shit I had no idea! It’s practically a cliche that great actors from prestige television in America are all from the UK. This is the first time it’s happened to me in music. Or the most shocking I guess. Three & a not-quite-half
soul?!
Legendary voice and some good covers, but not essential
I didn't realize she covered so many of the songs on this album. Favorite songs: Mama Said, Wishin' And Hopin'
This is great kitchen music. I like her voice, the music is cinematic enough...it's almost like a 60s version of Lana Del Rey. Just nothing I'd listen to on my own while working or driving...but it's what I'd play while making dinner.
i could only find the expanded version of the album on Spotify, so i'm just rating the OG tracklist only Mama Said - 4/5 You Don't Own Me - 5/5 Do Re Mi - 3/5 When the Lovelight Starts Shining Thru His Eyes - 3/5 My Colouring Book - 3/5 Mockingbird - 2/5 Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa - 4/5 Nothing - 2/5 Anyone Who Had a Heart - 4/5 Will You Love Me Tomorrow - 4/5 Wishin' and Hopin' - 3/5 Don't You Know - 3/5 Average score: 3.3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ i can't believe i went all these years not knowing Dusty Springfield was british aside from You Don't Own Me, everything track kinda sounded the same to me. i didn't hear anything from her performance that i haven't heard other female vocalists during the Motown movement do. still, she's got a great voice and this was still a pretty good listen overall
She obviously has a great voice. I think the song selection is a little slight, but there are some killer ones for sure.
60s folk pop. Cool voice. Soul. Covers. Some fun retro standards.
3.5 stars
A solid debut album from a whith girl singing pop and blues with jazz influences. Lot of covers but very fun to listen to. She evolved into a much mature singer later on making an inpact on the music world that stand to this day. Its a good album for the era.
disco interesante, no lo conocia y me parecio bastante bueno lindas canciones buena vibe Vibes- “Velvet” - Serie Española
I love her voice, and I respect this album, but I don’t like it as much as some of the other stuff she would go on to record.
a 60’s covers album.. not really my thing but solid to listen to. 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The voice is never in question — Dusty Springfield arrived fully formed, with an instrument that could elevate almost any material she chose to inhabit. That much was clear even from a background listen during a work session. The problem is the material itself. A Girl Called Dusty is largely covers of American soul and R&B, delivered competently and without obvious missteps, but rarely with the kind of production or arrangement that gives the voice the setting it deserves. Compared to Dusty in Memphis — where Jerry Wexler and the Muscle Shoals musicians created a framework that drew out her absolute best — this debut sounds like a talented singer waiting for the right room to walk into. Nothing here is bad. Very little demands attention. A record that plays pleasantly in the background without once making you look up from what you're doing has told you most of what you need to know. The Memphis record earned a four through sophistication, restraint, and production that breathed. This one earns a three through the voice alone — present, beautiful, and somewhat underserved by everything surrounding it.
Fun album with good covers. Dusty has a nice voice, but I will say in many cases I found myself missing the original versions of these songs.
Dusty! Did not realize few songs such a take alive of my heart came from her.
Nothing notable.
Day855 - lots of artists made careers of interpreting the writers words and i would put dusty springfield up there with dionne warwick as greats
Dusty Springfield's debut album is a compendium of soul covers which is totally fine. its inclusion in 1001 Albums... strikes me as an incredibly British decision; I don't see why I would seek her versions of these songs out over their Black American originals. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "You Don't Own Me" go over well enough. decent 5/10.
Back in the days when the songwriters wrote the songs and singers just sang them. She has a lovely voice and they are fine songs. As you would expect when the best singers were given the best songs. A few I recognised but the album is so old (although still 2 months younger than me!) that it's difficult to know if they are covers, done by somebody else later or where I might have heard them. Pleasant and harmless, but very middle of the road 60s radio fayre.
Nice voice, just a bummer that at the time so few artists wrote their own songs/relied on covers. Good overall, though. 3/5
It's catchy. That's about all I can say.
It's very 50's-tinged with a lot of doo-wop singing and big-band production. It almost sounds like it hasn't QUITE caught up with the 60's yet. She croons like a big band singer from that era. On the other hand, there are definite 60's sounding songs on here, too. It's an enjoyable record.
i liked the songs i knew ther rst kinda just passed by
Meh... Die ersten zwei Songs fand ich gut, danach tats zumindest niemandem weh
Amazing voice on Dusty. I enjoyed this quite a bit, maybe not as much as Dusty in Memphis, though. 3 stars
Good debut, some nice covers of so far of the era.
Some classics on here, but nothing I’m going out of my way to listen to.
She's always been a bit of a Greatest Hits listen for me, a stunning voice with the typical 60s album situation of one or two tracks from each album are worth listening to - and this really shows that behaviour. Her first album shows her vocals off well, but with the exception of one or two, better versions are found elsewhere.
I love Dusty Springfield, but this album is a bit too 1964 pop my taste. It's not bad, just not something I'd likely put on again. "Wishin' and Hopin'" is good. But give me Dusty in Memphis any day.
Fine but not really my style. She's a great singer but I just find it kind of boring.
Nice I guess but nothing too special
This is a really nice collection of songs. I don't think it's something I'd listen to often, though, hence a modest rating.
Beautiful sultry voice. She sounds amazing when in her own style and range but some songs on this album seem not a fit for these. Maybe needed a better producer or manager.
Review - Very surprised this is her debut. There are some great songs here, but also some filler. Amazed to discover that the annoying "Mockingbird" song they sing in Dumb and Dumber is a Dusty Springfield song. The original album is a lot stronger than the 20 minutes of bonus tracks that were added on reissue - I always rate based on the original album, but worth mentioning that the quality of the album has been severely diluted over the years. Rating - 7/10 Need to hear? YES
cute
much better than I would usually rate this genre
Lovely voice, it goes without saying. But nothing here to get the blood pumping (and I'm just going to say it here because I know it's a safe space "Preacher Man" is not a classic, it's dull). Solid - needs more Pet Shop Boys
Solid, nothing special
Kind of all over the place
Enjoyable, some really good tracks, some average.
You already know half the songs, so it's hard to say if it's a good album or just a familiar one.
J'aime bien la vibe, mais je ne l'écouterais pas tous les jours
While I was familiar with Dusty's voice due to "Son of a Preacher Man" (which isn't on this album), this album is a great reminder of just how good a singer she was. Unfortunately, since we're in the early 60s here, this is less a coherent album than it is a collection of songs. In this case the songs are just about all covers, and because I've heard other singers perform them, Dusty just sounds wrong, especially on songs originally performed by Black artists. The exception is "Wishin' and Hopin'," which I associate with Springfield much more than I do Dionne Warwick.
I guess the original Amy Winehouse? She has a killer voice and the songs groove really well. Based on the lyrics she seems to have a lot of trouble trusting her partners. Anyway, some nice arrangements but not really my wheelhouse Mockingbird and 24 hours from Tulsa are my favs from this album. Anyone who has a heart also has a pretty cool rhythm to it. lyrics to Wishing and Hoping are hilarious
I went quickly from 'hell no!' to 'hell yeah!' The light-hearted style with cheerful singing and feel-good, up-tempo drums was a great way to start a day.
Whole Album sounds the way a typical American diner looks like. Good vibe. Wouldn't skip it on the radio but also wouldn't search for ot
Pleasant enough listen, but none of the tracks really stood out. Quite nice background music.
++
This is fine, but it feels like every song on this album sounds the exact same and after a while they all began to flow together. You Don't Own Me is cool, and Mockingbird is a classic, but outside of those two there wasn't much for me personally. It's still solid enough.
If Adele was born in the mid-late 1900s, I can tell Adele probably listened to a Dusty Springfield album or two. She seems to face a lot of heartbreak but otherwise great vocals and backing music.
Decent new experience for something which is not my bag. Decent vocals as expected from Dusty, think the cover tracks were the strongest which may tell you..!!?? 3/5.
lijepo, fino, kratko, slatko! vrhunac – will you love me tomorrow. ostatak kakvoćom pomalo vrludav, no sve u svemu lijepo :)
I am aware of Dusty Springfield and have 2 songs liked by her on Spotify. One of them is "Son of a Preacher Man" which is on a different album than this one. The other is also on another album and is called "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself". I believe I found that song because of the White Stripes cover of it. So, I'm curious to listen to this and learn more about Dusty. Looks like the version on Spotify has 20 songs but the original release has only 12 songs - so I will only be focusing on the first 12 for this review. "You Don't Own Me" - cool to see a song about women's empowerment in the mid 60s. Though, it is ironic that it was written by 2 men. It's also funny that the song "Wishin' and Hopin'" is like the exact opposite telling the women to do everything they can to please the guy so that they can get him - song also written by 2 men. Clearly in the mid-60's popular culture people were receiving mixed messages on gender norms. Although it does sometimes seem like that still is the case today actually - haha. Was a fun listen - I didn't love all of it - but ended up "liking" 6 songs - the 2 mentioned above plus "Mama Said", "Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa", "Anyone Who Had a Heart", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow". One thing that is interesting, when looking at albums like this, is how every song is written by someone else. In those days it seems that the norm was there were songwriters and there were performers - and they were almost always different people. And MANY of the songs were recorded by multiple artists - sometimes at the same time or in close succession. Having grown up in the rock era, I am more used to where most artists since Dylan and the Beatles write the lyrics and the music and also perform their own stuff - not always but that is usually the case. I don't think I really appreciated how much of a change in the music business this was until I've gotten older and seen many examples like this. I know lots of current pop music still does this quite a bit - even in 2026 - but it's much less common in rock genres. Actually, I've noticed on lots of more modern pop albums and rap albums that there are teams of people credited with "writing". I still don't really understand what they are all doing. Liked songs on Spotify: 6/12 Rating: 3/5
Great album with great songs. It would be better if it wasn't all covers.
I was really really surprised by her performance and she so versatile and i liked this album
Spooky es un temazo pero no está en ese álbum
This is Dusty Springfield’s second album in this project. I was pleasantly surprised by the first one. I had expected something completely different. I was looking forward to this album. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to my expectations. The music was okay, but it sounded like it was made ten years earlier, back in the ’50s. I don’t think I’ll be listening to this album again anytime soon. 3/5
What a pleasant album to have while heading into the weekend. While she did not write any of these songs, she clearly had some good taste in songwriters. Also, I think folks are missing how radical it was for a woman to appear on her album cover wearing pants in 1964. It clearly conveys, "I've done what I wanted to do, and I don't give a fuck what your opinion is." Not a fan of Earl King's "Do Re Mi", but even some of my favorite albums on this list have a track or two that miss. Exceptional flow for these tracks. I'm certain some will dismiss this as meaningless pop or worse appropriation, but all I hear is a skilled singer who paid her dues earlier in her carrier and is finally getting to sing some tracks she really digs, fairly well, I might add. That is, for a young Englishwoman who was only recently introduced to American soul/R&B music. While I could argue that the album was chosen because it became one, among others at the time, that would be the template for how to create a debut soul/pop album as a solo artist; particularly if you had just come out of a more well known group of musicians. Having said all that, it is clear that this album was really only chosen because Springfield is English, otherwise, as pleasant of an album of covers that it is, it probably would not appear on a more objective version of this list as an essential album. Honestly, though, for me it was fun. Favorites: "Mama Said", "You Don't Own Me", and "I Only Want to Be with You"
Wishin’ and Hopin’ Summer is over She has a great voice and it all sounds nice, it’s just a lot of the same thing. 6/10
265/1089 her voice is really nice and gives such strong xmas vibes. her cover of You Don’t Own Me is def not my fave but When The Love Light Starts Shining Thru His Eyes was really good Also saved Will You Love Me Tomorrow, great track. this was a nice chill covers album, easy to listen to and i can kinda see why it’s on here, not sure i need to return to it though 51/100
2.5
Decent enough - great voice
I had no idea what this album was going to be at first, but I was surprised by this album. I knew more a bunch of the songs. There's some good stuff, but it's a little long and wears thin.
Didn’t know much about her, but it seems Dusty was an amazing woman and ahead of her time. Fifties/early sixties rock is one of my least favorite genres but I appreciate her voice and her significance.
Enjoyed her soul influenced songs. I’ve always loved her cover of son on a preacher man for the same reason. This was a solid album by an interesting female singer of that era but not a fan of the bumble gum hits
I enjoyed this quite a bit, she's got a great voice and it's well-produced. That said, any album of standards is going to get tiresome eventually, as this one does. "Summer is Over" is a great closer tho.
Dusty Springfield bends these standards and classics to her will. Great intro to the future LGBTQ icon.
She's more than the woman who sings Son of a Preacher Man, would listen to again
This isn't the most even of releases. Essentially a compilation / cover album, it suffers from mixed production values. The one thing that separates this from others is the quality of songwriting and Sandy's soaring vocals.
Was surprised by Dusty’s voice on a previous album in the list. Enjoyable songs and good enough versions, but is always odd to rate an album knowing that most of it is covers, even though that was very common at the time. Solid enough songs, great voice and very of its time. Not sure I’d go back, but enjoyable enough (3.5)
Great voice. I know a few other songs. It’s a bit long but the Bacharach songs are great as are some others. I would not go out of my way to listen though 3.4
I thought this was a fun album overall, in a campy kind of way. I was surprised how many songs I knew - probably like 5 or 6 - most likely from movies or tv shows they were in. Dusty has a fantastic voice and some of the lyrics made me laugh out loud. I haven’t heard “making whoopie” since watching The Newlywed Game reruns back in the early 80s. And the 24 hour song was hysterical. Sorry, I was almost home to be with you but then I ran into this random guy at the hotel and now I’m with him. Anyway, it was a bit too long but I enjoyed listening to it.
A simple composition that is dated to its time period, but a very enjoyable listen. Powerful vocals, that include the back-up singers, and an easy to follow drum and guitar progression. The horns and piano were nice additions as well on several songs that I recognized. A good selection for today’s listen.
Fun listen for a short bit, but sloshed on for a bit too long and soured my view. I'm rating based on my pre "ugh...enough of this already" mood. Outstanding vocals, Dustys voice is beautiful, both powerful and tender. Songs and music are the typical sandards of the period, but actually hold up fairly well. Plenty of familiar songs, good listen overall.
classic
Not my style
Nice energy
Pretty repetitive but nice melodies, generally what you get out of 60s soul-pop. Highlights: "You Don't Own Me", "Once Upon a Time", "Summer is Over"
Mucho más entretenido que el anterior, me gustó mucho mas 3 estrellas
Lots of good songs. Many of them are ones I know I've heard, but didn't know where they came from. I had no idea that the Mockingbird song from Dumb and Dumber was a real song.
Very old sounding album, it was interesting to listen to. I dont typically listen to old 60s music like this but for a short change I did actually enjoy it, just not my typical listen.
Good voice, easy listening. I recognised many of the tracks as covers and have say in all cases the originals are superior. Least favourite track My Colouring Book also arrangemnet of Mockingbird not enjoyable.
Hot damn this white girl has a blaccent. Like a legitimately insane blaccent. It's not that big of a deal, I mean it's a 1960s pop soul album, of course she has a blaccent. It's just very noticeable, y'know? Anyway "Mama Said" is a pretty great song, and the rest of the album follows suit. The only problem is the “suit” is pretty okay covers of songs of varying quality. She has a pretty cool voice but not much further, and as the songs’ qualities begin to decline as the album progresses, it begins to get pretty old. The highlights (mama said, nothing, pretty much any of the straight-up rhythm and blues cuts) are enough to give this a tentative passing score but it’s certainly not anything special. 6.6/10
Me gusto, muy lindo recomiendo hay unas 2 o 3 canciones que conocia y que no sabía que eran de ella
This is a repeat for me. Original review: A great sound, but I often found myself wishing I were listening to the original versions Updated review: Some great vocal performances but unfortunately I didn’t really care for much of the song selection. This time I listened to the expanded edition of the album and felt that I enjoyed many of the outtakes more than the original album tracks (my rating, as with all albums, is based on as close as I can get to the original release). My rating remains the same.
While I can romanticize and enjoy 60s radio hits, this “R&B/Soul” album is delivered way more like a pop album. Too much of pop at that.
She's good but this is some dippy ass shit. Coloring books straight into Mockingbird...edgy
I know it was tough out there for a solo female vocalist, and not to take away from Dusty, who sounds great here, and the chosen tunes demonstrate her range really effectively, it's just... It's a bunch of covers? The way the business was, I know, and fortunately we'd get more Dusty on later recordings
Pop.
Ein paar bekannte Hits, ansonsten seicht vor sich hin plätschernde Pop-Musik der 60er. Schön zu hören. 3/5
ok
(4/7) is this representative of female vocalists before singer/songwriters became the norm?
De acá sale la de Luis Miguel si no supiste amar...
Having never listened to this album before its surprising I know all of the songs. For someone so acclaimed, it would seem she covered everyone else's hits.
Great voice. She's one of those people whose looks don't match their voice; her vocals defy expectations. The album itself is enjoyable but wouldn't stand out without Springfield's voice.
quite bland
Dusty does her thing. Damn, she can sing. I mean, no ground broken but do we always need new ground?
Dusty had a distinct style, all her own, supported with world-class songwriting. The best tracks here still shine.
This was a little disappointment to me. One of the first albums I got was Dusty in Memphis, and that album was much better. You should think that an album of cover songs with a classic singer like Dusty Springfield would be great. But this is just a plain middle of the road, kind of boring record. It’s not bad, but never engaging.
A lot of recognizable classics in here, fun listening
Not something I’d listen to again. It was fine.
Nice album, I like her voice. As usual for that time, cover versions of various hits of that time. Not bad, but nothing outstanding enough for this album to deserve a place here.
I slightly prefer Dusty in Memphis, hence this album getting a slightly lower grade. Anyone Who Had a Heart is a banger though.
ach, de jaren 60 toch
2.5
Not boring, but not her best.
I enjoyed this more than Dusty in Memphis but clocked a few cover versions so i looked it up..... Turns out that of the 12 tracks on the original version of this album 11 are covers!!
I enjoyed this album, a few of her classics are on it
Dusty Springfield is an interesting pop figure to touch on because she was probably the most American-sounding British singer out there. She had a commanding presence on the microphone and that really shows on "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" and "You Don't Own Me". I think for a pop record in 1963, it was good for its time though I only go back to a handful of tunes. I might have more to say about the other Dusty record on this list. Solid to say (7/10, 3/5 on this scale)
Certified classics, although some real bad ones
it´s a cool sounding album, nothing much TODAY'S BIRD: Cockatoos
Helt straight 60-tallspop det her vel
Good soul but still kinda meh 3.2
A great feel good record with lots of very familiar songs. A very nostalgic record. Great voice. But for myself not a record I’d revisit again likely very often.
Dusty Springfield had such a great voice, but I don't think the production and choice of songs here always play to her strengths. (She had to wait for Dusty in Memphis for an album that did that.)
Lovely, mbc 2 vibes
Bien
me gustó mucho su voz y la onda sesentosa pero más como soundtrack que como disco para sentarme a escuchar. igual muy lindo eh
Gonna be honest didnt actually finish this one (yet) the first couple of songs were good but my god there comes a time that they all just start to sound the same. Confused also why this album is on this list when i think its mainly covers
Great voice, tunes were good. Just wish I had an original Dusty album rather than covers
My lukewarm, cynical take is that the existence of this album was fueled, Dusty’s talent notwithstanding, by the need to repackage these songs for a white, British audience. Otherwise I’m not sure why Dionne Warwick, the Shirelles and others’ versions of these song wouldn’t suffice. The fact that it didn’t even get an American release initially serves to underscore the point. Still, it wasn’t abnormal for new singers to be introduced to the public with their own versions of popular songs, and Dusty definitely brings something special to them. But it’s unlikely I’d ever prefer these versions over the originals. I’ll hold for Dusty in Memphis.
I really liked the first Dusty Springfield album I had, but this one was just not that good in comparison. Her voice is great, but the songs are boring
Once this album popped up, I shrugged, and said "she's back". I really didn't have any hope for this one. It turned out to sound like a 1950s Pop Album that was quite enjoyable. While it is true that she stole songs, prominently from black artists, this was a different era, and unfortunately, way too common then. Favorite Track: "Mama Said".
Not sure if it's the mix, the recording, or her vocal quality when she's belting, but there is an unpleasant tone to it at times, especially on the deep cuts. Like most of the hits though
This was quite pleasant. The instrumentals were okay, but Dusty's vocals were quite amazing here. Favourite Track(s): You Don't Own Me, Anyone Who Had a Heart, Nothing Least Favourite Track(s): My Colouring Book
Musically, this album looks backwards to an earlier time and sits at the end of an era. Did this album influence any music downstream? Supposedly, a white British woman singing Motown was considered edgy.
Nice album! Good on a road trip.
This album has some fun covers - although the originals seem better to me but I admit it may be familiarity. Dusty’s got a great range of songs and a really soulful voice but I still don’t quite understand why this is on the list as it doesn’t really present much new or outstanding. Still, it was a decent listen.
Lowkey earnest.
Couple of bangers. Lots of stuff that doesn't hit me personally. Never been a huge fan, especially of the early stuff.
You don’t own me 3/5
Great songs, great voice, but not much of an impact considering it’s a cover album
Dusty is probably my favorite female singer of all time and I would listen to her sing anything. That said, if I’m rating this as an album experience, I have to acknowledge that it’s about half filler.
Not my thing but can appreciate for the era.
I enjoyed this album, its very pleasing to listen to. I will be playing it again. However, I am conscious that it is composed of covers, which aren't particularly ambitious or bold in style. Likewise Dustys performance, for all its strengths, doesn't really outshine her peers at the time. Maybe being a bit cynical on this one but I did really enjoy it..
Her voice is amazing. Great expression and tonal range, but I didn't care for the songs themselves.
Dusty was a 1960's institution and her songs are still being played today. Powerful voice and classic pop from the early 60's.
Had no clue she was from England all these years. I guess Adele and Amy Winehouse weren't as much the trailblazers that I thought.
Some good some bad
It was okay.
Pretty fun '60s pop, not really my main thing but still an enjoyable listen! 3 stars
This one was fun. Had some early 60's American Bandstand, Austin Powers vibes. I'd heard some of these songs and heard the name Dusty Springfield, but never put two and two together. The second track was my favorite. I like the smooth intro.
Good listen, lots of classic songs, but wouldn’t bother listening to the album again probably
This was a fun listen over the weekend. It was lucky, I got this one on a Friday. I probably wouldn't have liked it on the week commute, but it was a blessing for the Sunday morning walk in the park. Yes, it is a cover album and yes, it lacks originality, but it still was a pleasant listen.
A good classic album. Oldies I recognize from childhood.
i think the point of listening to this is to realize that it’s pretty much just ok, and then to realize that it’s still miles ahead of basically all pop today
I liked the song selection (understanding now that they're covers), and I liked her voice. Probably didn't enjoy them as much as the originals, but I can't lie and say that I didn't enjoy the album.
Will you love me tomorrow, danke für den Ohrwurm.
c'est de la country maiiiiis je vois pourquoi l'album a sa place dans les 1001 albums pour le coup ya quand même du classicos (quand je dis country ça inclut jazz soul tout ça tout ça)
Really solid album of most covers. Was fun to know so many songs without having heard the full album before.
The girl could definitely sing! Good stuff all around.
Unsorted thoughts: Not as cohesive or warm as ‘Dusty in Memphis’ and most of the songs aren’t as strong, but Dusty has such a presence and compelling voice that that isn’t as big a knock as it could be. The way we sing about sex in pop music has changed a lot. (In my opinion, for the better - like, “Do Re Mi” is clearly about boning but the childish tone made me feel weird and it’s just not sexy. Compare that to “Son of a Preacher Man” or “Breakfast in Bed”. I just can’t stop comparing this unfavorably to ‘Dusty in Memphis’.) Sometimes the production is booming and spacious, like on the outright classic “You Don’t Own Me”. Other times it’s muddy and drowns Dusty out, like on “My Colouring Book”.
Some very good performances, but also a few duds. Of the songs I’m familiar with, none of Dusty’s covers are as good as the originals, so I hardly consider this essential listening.
objectively good, especially “you don’t own me”. There were pretty good ones and some that were mid. Overall, most I wouldn’t listen to, some are on the playlist.
Smooth listening experience. Many songs I recognized. Dusty has a great voice.
