Amazing voice, absolutely love these type of old school pop albums. 4/5
Despite some ….dated (and inconsistent) views on male/female relationships, this is a punchy debut album. Great variety in the backing tracks with a lot of disparate musical elements coming together in organic ways. Dusty’s not yet at the height of her vocal prowess, but her range and control are still impressive here and the vocal layering is ahead of its time. Listened to: shopping at Target. Favorite tracks: Nothing, You Don’t Own Me
So many bops on this album. "Mocking Bird" from Dumb and Dumber is on here! I've never heard the original! "Wishin' and Hopin'" from My Best Friend's Wedding" and "24 Hours from Tulsa" are great, too. "Do Re Mi" is super catchy. I love this album.
I liked the music. I am just rating the music. Please don't hate me :(
Great voice! Easy listening!
Fun Dusty Springfield songs I hadn’t heard.
real nice
Had lots of fun listening to this, my favorites were “Mama Said” and “Wishin’ And Hopin’.”
really nice one, really like do re mi, and you dont own me
Oldies! Love it, just good music
Lots of hits
An excellent albums with lots of great songs!
Amazing! So many great tracks. 4.25 stars
Big and full of showmanship, it's easy to hear how this was popular way back when. I often find myself measuring if an album makes me stop what I'm doing to listen. This one did.
I really enjoyed this one. Can see where Amy Winehouse got her inspiration. Just some wonderful soul. Big thumbs up. Unexpected bangers: Summer is Over, 24 Hours from Tulsa, Do Re Mi
Lovely stuff. Classics, but enjoyed the whole album more than I’d imagined. Beautiful storytelling.
I didn’t love all of this but there’s enough real classics to get 4 stars. Always loved Dusty. Very culturally American though eh? Whatever, she’s great.
Great vocals. Preferred the mono recordings
What a voice! Dusty can make even the most trivial of disagreements sound like a world-ending conflict.
Achei bom, mesmo sendo algo pré anos 70
A classic example of the extra 'CD tracks' just being filler. Original album a fly along pop cracker.
With the exception of a few songs, this album is great! The strength in her voice gives chills
Such a wonderful product of its time. I really enjoyed hearing it in full. I know many of those songs but listening in one sitting really put me in that time.
I think she has a lovely voice and the music compliments it nicely!
Love this style of music and she has a great voice. Some songs are more famous by other artists and it was hard to get past that. Not enough wow to get to 5 stars
I am a sucker for this genre and Dusty certainly has a beautiful and iconic voice, but this album falls into to the same category of complaints I had with Jerry Lee Lewis and the Bluesbreakers. It's hard for me to give an album a 5 if I am enjoying a track but thinking of a better version of it.
Solid album with some really solid and catchy tracks. I just wish Son of a Preacher man was on this album
Passionate pop soul. My goodness what surprise this album was. I was fully prepared to just sit through this album and just tolerate it at most but I was completely blown away by the power behind Dusty's voice. At every turn it really felt like she was giving it her all, even in some of the softer songs. Incredible soul-inspired pop with plenty of blues elements. As with a lot of other first albums for singer around this time, I've come to find that a lot of these songs are covers, which probably explains why they just kinda feel thrown together. All of the renditions of the songs were great but it's Dusty's singing that really stands out above all else. That alone makes this record special. Surely a classic even if the songs aren't all original. Will probably revisit certain songs. 4/5
i love dusty springfield
4 /5
These are great songs performed with talent, so it deserves a high score from a subjective enjoyment POV - they're all covers though, and we already have another Dusty Springfield album on the list, so I woulda preferred if this one's slot went to an album of one of the originators of these songs! Fave tracks - "You Don't Own Me" gets the top spot, but "Mama Said", "Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa" and "Anyone Who Had A Heart" get mentions too!
Great album, only avoiding five stars as it's largely covers... But bloomin great covers.
It's like the gold radio on Cities: Skylines 1 (the better one)
Dusty Springfield has the Amy Winehouse effect. Or maybe it's the Dusty Springfield effect, with Winehouse being a modern iteration of the same thing. That thing? If you didn't have a photo to go with the voice, you might be guilty of thinking the person singing was of a different complexion. Can I get a witness, here?
Música sesentera clásica. Está bien. Un 4.
Much better than I expected. Some 60’s standards I have heard by other artists, I’ll need to look to see who did them first. Great voice, powerful without the current trend of overdoing it.
Those enjoyable soul sounds
It’s impossible to not love this kind of 60s pop soul but overall this one was a less memorable one aside from you don’t own me. It might also just be that I wasn’t super in the mood for this one today.
This was her debut album. What a powerhouse! That voice! Those songs! Took me right back to the mid sixties!
Sound wise I already dig this opening track. I don’t know what it is about this album. Maybe the vocals? The strings? It’s just a calming sound. Right from the start “can I get a witness” is great.
Love dusty 4
Dusty got soul!
Great voice, great songs, and only a few of them that I knew before listening. So glad I started this, as I would probably never have sought out this album otherwise! 4 🌟
Did not open
Loved it, didn’t know I already knew some of these songs. B side weaker. Will listen again
Really, really was not expecting to find myself enjoying Dusty Springfield this much, but both her albums in here so far have been pretty great. The arrangements are all very impressive and big band-derived, which is an easy way to capture my interest. Her voice sounds pretty significantly ahead of its time here too. Favorite track: Don't You Know
At least seven great songs to pull you through this one and Dusty's voice is always compelling.
Really, my only criticism is that some of this material is a little creaky to modern ears. That said, for what it is, the song selections are more or less impeccable. And that voice! I feel like Springfield is served best on minor key numbers - her smoky white soul voice sounds especially yearning and plaintive on 'Summer Is Over' - but she can properly belt it out on some of the more exuberant songs too. 'I Only Want to Be With You', despite being famous, caught me out a little on this collection, for some reason. It still sounds ace. Classy from top to bottom.
Definitely an upbeat and fun album to listen to. Worth a re-listen anytime
8/10 Classy album, full of bangers Singing voice amazing, some of the arrangements are pure great 60s Genuine classics on here A few throwaway tracks though Best: Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa
Enjoyable early pop.
MAMA said. I didn't skip anything. I even listened to the bonus tracks.
MAMA
Love it, super interesting listen
Hits on hits on hits. Had to YouTube though.
Solid, soulful album that I was not anticipating by looking at the album cover
Classic
Decent
it’s wild that I’d heard most of these songs and had no idea the artists name
fantastic!
Love a bit of Dusty Springfield. 60's icon. Beautiful voice.
Cool
I liked this album more than Dusty in Memphis because this is mostly oldies/60s covers from Burt Bacharach, Carole King, etc and has less of the lounge singer vibe than her other album I've listened to through 1001 Albums so far. I like that retro vibe and enjoyed listening to this album!
Dusty is lit. I thought the album got better as it went on. Big voice. Added two songs to my library
Well I knew a lot more on here than I expected going in. You Don't Own Me and Wishin' And Hopin' are classic jams that take me back to listening to 100.3 in my grandma's car after being picked up from school. And a number of other songs sound familiar for one reason or another. Hard to say if I know her version or the originals she is covering (e.g., Mama Said and I Only Want To Be With You). Mockingbird just reminds me of Dumb and Dumber. Hard to argue with the talent on display here. She has a great vocal range and powerful delivery that was a pleasure to listen to. A solid 4 of golden oldies.
I really liked this album. Beautiful voice and it's strong but not overpowering. It reminds me of something Quinten Tarantino would use in one of his movies like Django. Do Re Mi and Summer is Over stuck out the most. I will definitely listen to some of these songs again.
Good Dusty, version with more songs, especially Can I get a Witness makes it even better. I don't connect with it as much as Dusty in Memphis, but that's hard to top for anyone. 4/5
Mama said there'll be days like this.
Frothy. Knew a lot more songs than expected.
Blown away might be a bit of a stretch, but I was dumbfounded by how many Dusty songs I knew. I've had Dusty in Memphis come up already and only knew '...Preacher Man' - but I think 80% of the songs on this album had me going "Oh I know this one" or "I had no idea Dusty wrote this??" Whilst it's not the kind of album I'll often go back to I enjoyed it for what it was, and it's opened my eyes to just how influential she is.
I didn't expect to like this as much as I did!
really enjoyed listening to this while printing, 60s pop goes off. her voice is beautiful!
Her voice is timeless.
Very soulful voice; I knew a lot of her songs, but had no idea it was Dusty.
This was simply lovely. Had a fantastic tim listening to it. Something about old melancholic music just hits right what I’m looking for in music. Will definitely revisit.
This is actuallya classical album would highly recommend.
- some absolute bangers on this one
"You Don't Own Me" for every perfume commercial in the early 2020s
She was great
The strings make the sound along with her incredible voice. Covers galore but even so great album!
Good
Listened to "Dusty" which was available on Tidal. Her voice is fantastic.
A fun album.
She's the best. I could listen to her all day.
Solid album with lots of great (and familiar) songs. Found out most songs are not original to Springfield (as was a common practice in the 50s and 60s) so in a way it's a cover album. Nevertheless Springfield has a great voice and the songs were well chosen. Standout tracks: Mama Said, You Don't Own Me.
kind of lana del rey coded favorites: summer is over, my colouring book, you don't own me (suicide squad lolz), anyone had a heart
love this type of music, good for a rainy day. fave is All Cried Out
I always assumed Dusty Springfield was a country singer. I was stupidly mistaken. The first three tracks instantly made me assume I was listening to Adelle and Amy Winehouses' inspiration. Timeless sound.
Fantastic powerful and peppy vocal performance. Focused storytelling throughout, with engaging backing track. Overall a fun album carried by vocal talent. Light 7
Songwriting and melodies were great throughout. Her voice is fantastic and she uses it really well and diversely all over. I thought 20 songs was going to get a bit much but thought each song had its own thing going on and didn’t feel like it lasted too long. Really impressed. Light to decent 8
Dusty performed many great songs I didn’t realize were her!
To me personally this album came as a nice surprise. I knew „Son of a preacherman“, but that’s about it. While listening I recognized one song of the album, so basically all songs were pretty new to me. She has a great voice and there’s some nice variety between songs regarding style and mood. Good album!
beautiful
Very cool record. Her voice is very nice and I like the overall sound
Mostly bangers
I know almost every song on this album. Sounds like a sunny day in the spring cleaning your house.
Great album! 3.5
Täähän on vitun hyvää fiilistelyä! 4/5
This album is probably the best Dusty Springfield album I've heard as of yet. There are quite a lot of really good tunes on this one, like 'You Don't Own Me', 'Anyone Who Had A Hear', 'I Only Want To Be With You'. I think this album suffers from too many songs though, not all of which live up to the same standard as the ones I mentioned before. Despite this I think it still qualifies as a weak 4 for me!
Such a great voice. A great album for relaxing and the positive vibes of early 60s country.
Loads of banging tunes on that one
December 12, 2023 Incredible voice and talent. Impressive number of classics on this, especially for a debut album from this era.
Love me some Dusty Springfield. Such a beautiful, textured, nuanced voice. 4 stars. BTW, I couldn't find this album on Spotify with the track listing shown on Wikipedia. All the songs are there, but split across a couple of different albums. So, I created a playlist with the original tracks in order - feel free to use this. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/31plEX4jbUalobYNfw7qYw?si=167e5224a3cd45e4
Excellent excecution and soulful also. had a great time listening to this.
Awesome Brit
Chanteuse britannique. C'est elle qui fait Wishin' and hopin' (émoticone de coeur). J'aime bien sa voix, c'est très swing sixties. 4 pour mon soft spot.
Vintage
okay some serious bangers in this one, and her voice is so rich. also some totally forgettable songs. not an album i would listen to all the way through, but definitely some songs to keep in mind.
Dusty Springfield is incredible, and an album of her singing incredible songs, covers or not, goes down very nicely.
Oldies, but goodies.... 4/5
A solid pop album.

wow i would have thought this was Winehouse. i haven’t really listened to Springfield before and didn’t realize how much Winehouse channeled her. (edit: i officially claim that i wrote that before getting to the song on the album that Winehouse covered!)
Banger after banger after banger, bangers and mash
good vibes. will have to finish later
Jeg likte dette albumet. Føler jeg at jeg burde likt det? Nope. Hadde jeg noe valg? Nope. Vokalen, komposisjonen, NOE bare traff skikkelig. Hørte på det i regnet mens jeg gikk til jobb i ganske dårlig humør, og innen jeg åpnet døren til jobb hadde humøret snudd og jeg hadde en trall på hjernen ❤️
Very good voice, very good songs. Loved it.
Summer is over was probably my favorite by her, very cool sounding song.
I love Dusty's voice.
Probably could’ve been 5 stars if it was a little shorter. A masterclass in stealing black music, extra points for making me feel like I’m in a Scorsese movie
a girl called dusty… makes bangers
Jag gillar verkligen det här soundet... väldigt vackert men kinda i en plåtburk typ. Finns på alla möjliga mitten av 60-talet album
Already had this album weirdly. It's gold, not great.
Fantastic album and fantastic sleeve!
Really good album. Need to find on vinyl. Such an easy album to listen to.
NOT AVAILBLE-had to listen to stay awhile album instead-great. A lot of classics this is Alyssa’s kind of music. 4/5
Wasn’t available in my country so I listened to Dusty instead
Great feeling - this is perfect background music if you're into soul. Dusty has such a powerful voice it's gorgeous to listen to and I think everyone should give it a go at some point. The album is quite long but filled with her absolute best.
3.8/5 - I'll round up since this is a decade from before my mom was born, I'm sure there's some generational gap that keeps me from fully enjoying (like not listening on vinyl, this would be really great to dance in the living room to on vinyl). God she's got such a full and pretty voice. When she sings I can imagine her smiling and that makes me smile. This album feels like it exists in that little space of time before the rock music I've been told about, i.e. Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Rolling Stones. It's all still about love and losing people. Which are certainly top 5 topics to sing about, and Dusty does it quite well. However, they all kind of roll into one another like the yellow and orange row of a crayon box. All pretty and lively songs individually - can't quite separate them from each other.
I didn't realize how many of her songs I knew.
I knew more songs than I expected, quite an influential artist!
For as much flack as she has gotten, she has some sold music, and really created a successful template for modern acts.
Great album for soul music lovers! Favorite song: Summer is Over.
Great album! There are some really nice songs on there. Especially the first three songs and Will you love me tomorrow. Glad I found this gem!
She had the voice that fit the controlled creations that 60s women were given to sing. You Don't Own Me broke the attitude mold of always pleasing no matter what. Wishin and Hopin was what school girls did. So this makes sense on the list of 1001. Wonder what she would sound like in a modern genre.
loooove it
This was a comeback of sorts for Dusty and it's clear the intent was to focus her voice on already popular songs. I enjoyed this music, but it feels a bit like Dusty karaoke to take already popular songs and have her sing them. Nothing wrong with that, but does it elevate the source material? Not always, but still a good one and probably deserves on this list.
Nice voice, and great songs.
the classics are the classics for a reason
очень соулово и нежно
Like it
Truly killer pipes, some tracks stand out more than others, but not really any tracks I felt compelled to skip. Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Fav Track: All Cried Out 3.5/5
Loved this listen - Dusty is a genuine pop and soul superstar and this record plays pretty close to just being a greatest hits collection. In fairness, given that these are almost all covers I guess it's not all that original of an album, and far from her greatest success (Dusty in Memphis). Not too many misses here, will happily put this one on again and again. Three and a half. Fave track: Wishin' and Hopin'
Classics à gogo
A few 5 star tracks (I only want to be with you, when the love light starts shining thru his eyes, you don’t own me), and overall a 4 star album. This album (her UK debut) isn’t on the streaming service I use, but her US debut is (Stay Awhile/I Only Want to Be with You), which is a slightly reconfigured version. If you like this album then I recommend you check out the great compilation One Kiss Can Lead To Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost And Found. That four disc set is one of the single greatest music purchases I’ve ever made. Although there is an abbreviated 21 track version on streaming services.
I hadn't spent much time listening to Dusty Springfield before this, outside of her songs popping up in shows and movie soundtracks. She had a hell of a voice. It feels weird rating an album for this project that's entirely covers? But as I understand it, she didn't really think of herself as a songwriter, so maybe it makes sense. Definitely an enjoyable album tho.
Liked it very much! Can come back to it when I'm in the mood :)
Classics - You Don't Own Me, Mama Said, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Wishin and Hopin New to me that I really liked All Cried Out and Summer Is Over The rest is what you'd expect... big horns, background women, the styling of the era.
Pretty great album with a lot of classics that sounds really good
This was my second album by Dusty Springfield in this generator. This is her debut album. Apparently, prior to this, she was a member of the band The Lana Sisters. After she left that band, she started the band The Springfields with her brother. While touring the US in the early 60's, she was exposed to soul music, and decided decided to try a solo career, where her desire to sing these styles of music wasn't so limited. I can't hear the song Mockingbird without thinking of Dumb and Dumber now. Her first hit single from this album was I Only Want To Be With You. This song was recorded while she was still a member of The Springfields, and was released one week after their final tour. Overall, not her best work, but a great album when you consider that it was her debut. Her voice is beautiful, and her country/folk stylings are perfect for a quiet morning listen. Favourite songs: I Only Want To Be With You, Mama Said, Don't You Know, You Don't Own Me, Every Day I Have To Cry, Can I Get A Witness, Do Re Mi, Wishin' and Hopin' Least favourite songs: My Colouring Book, I Wish I'd Never Loved You 4/5
Great album! Dustys great voice melts well together with the folksy tunes.
Pretty good for a 60s pop-rock album. I'd add this to my streams.
really enjoyable listen. She has a great voice
I found this album charming! I really enjoyed Dusty’s performance, she has one of those voices that’s so powerful but so expressive, you can understand every nuance. And the songs she picked are really good! I just liked the “all live done in a room” sound for a change. Definitely a surprise hit for me. 4/5
Began really fun. Got kinda old
This was pleasant. It was the ideal soundtrack for the working morning. It has a nice pace and a classic pop sound. Dusty could sing Crass songs and they would still sound upbeat. The faster paced songs work better than the ballads. Dusty's voice can be a little too emotional for the heartbreak tales. She sings from the heart.
Should be a"5" but Dusty Springfield likely had no control over what record companies used as filler for an album. So, it's not as good as "Dusty in Memphis".
I've heard 'I only want to be with you' about thousand times, only with different instruments, different voice and in different language (quite flimsily translated as I realise now), so it was a nice surprise to come across this familiar melody. Beside that, the album is just a pleasant collection of love songs. Nothing too spectacular, but enjoyable.
Voix inoubliable, soul caractéristique de ces années, un peu pop. Superbe.
Great versions of good songs. I prefer Dustys version to the original in many cases. Dusty’s “Twenty four hours from Tulsa” has a lot more power and heart in it than Gene Pitneys version. And “When the love starts shining through his eyes” is almost on par with The Supremes original recording. The crisp expansive production makes it such a enjoyable listen.
I never realized so many well known Dusty Springfield songs came from this debut album. The whole album is performed well and is a polished snapshot of its genre and era.
Goeie zangeres. Toffe pop-nummertjes
3.5
It did get a bit slow in the middle but what a bop of an album. 60s pop is fun.
Hermosa voz, excelente banda, temazos para cantar sonriendo o dándolo todo como si fueran mini-musicales. You don't own me te lo canto a viva voz y pienso en la escena de El club de las divorciadas, y eso me hace bien. Completo, vibrante, lindo. Divina Dusty.
Loved this, much more iconic tracks than I expected. Super fun voice and really some creative music here.
Another nice listen by Dusty Springfield with some famous tunes and many highlights.
Dusty has many great songs in this record. I loved her tone and delivery. Her unpretentious and heartfelt songs will live in your head for days after listening to her albums. I can see many artists finding inspiration in this work.
Cool album, af en toe wel wat gedateerd. Gaat vaker geluisterd worden.
Amazing voice. Also loved the strings and horns.
Good soul music. Adele sounds a LOT like her and I can see where the inspiration came from. Very fun album.
Worth it alone for her take of ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’, but there’s lots more to enjoy here as well. ‘When The Light Starts Shining Thru His Eyes’, ‘Mockingbird’, ‘Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa’ and ‘Don’t You Know’ are all highlights as Dusty keeps it soulful and makes all these songs (and the rest on the album) her own.
very nice if uneven, unsurprisingly, given the rule book of mainstream 60s pop, and what a voice
What a voice!
What a voice!
Beautiful! I get a lot of what is here are covers. However, I really dig it. Worth a purchase. 4/5
There are a few Dusty albums that I've listened to pretty consistently, namely "Dusty in Memphis" and "Dusty...Definitely". While those are late 60's efforts by Dusty, this album is from the first half of the decade. And to be honest, it doesn't hit as hard as what she produced a few years later. This one just sounds like a white woman's version of what a lot of Motown artists were doing at this time. The Supremes, Mary Wells, the Marvelettes...they were all doing this kind of thing at this time, and just as well or better. It's just not as interesting as her later output, and doesn't provide as much of a spotlight for her individual talents. That said, she's clearly a star at any point in her life, and it's still fun to hear this. It's a short listen, and a sneak peek at what's to come. Looking at it in the context of the time it was released, I can't go lower than four stars.
7/10
Been a while since we've seen Dusty
fun
I like this album but there were a good amount of covers on this album. Often I would prefer to just listen to the original version of a song rather than a cover when the original singers are of the caliber of Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles, Diana Ross and Inez Foxx but because Dusty is a really great singer so it did not bother me that much. I would say the only cover she did that was not close to the quality of the original was "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes", it had nowhere near the same amount of energy of the original and when you listen to them back to back Dusty's version just sounds flat in comparison. I would say every song on this album is really good besides "Do Re Mi", "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes", "My Colouring Book" and . The standouts for me are "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "You Don't Own Me", "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" and "Don't You Know". Solid 8/10 album of classic 60's pop.
Wow, great record.
I was actually expecting not to like this but when I realised I already listen to "You don’t own me" and "Wishin' And Hopin'" I knew I’d prolly end up giving at a 3 or 4. I’m so glad I gave it a chance.
One quite likes the smoky and knowing voice, the sultry delivery, soulfulness, and the respectful attitude toward her R&B forebears, less so the Spectorian densities and the girliness of some of the material (e.g., “Do Re Mi,” “Mockingbird”). Best songs: “My Coloring Book,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” and “Twenty-Four Hours to Tulsa.” No doubting the authenticity of the talent, but doesn’t she seem more American than British? The version of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” is very good, though perhaps one’s never heard a bad version of the song, a testament to its quality.
I like it. Super upbeat and funky.
She has a great voice and it really shows itself on her versions of "You Don't Own Me", "My Colouring Book", and "Anyone Who Had A Heart". And as a Carole King die hard I appreciate the faithful rendition of her writing. I really did enjoy this album, it's simple but that's it's strength.
Heard a few songs before. After listening to the whole album, I find the message is powerful, but the production doesn't sound either classic or innovative.
I was expecting to hate this, but Dusty sang her little heart out and I found myself moving and grooving along with her songs of independence!
I love 60's pop music and enjoyed listening to this one. It got a little less exciting towards the middle, specifically the slower songs in the second half of Side A. Yet, I could see my self liking all of these and listening separately anytime once I'm a little more familiar with the individual songs. It picked up some speed again for Side B which was needed for me. And then it basically stayed energetic until the end. A really enjoyable record overall if you're into this kind of music. The slower songs were ultimately that I didn't enjoy that much but they weren't bad either. And it also had a few nicely done covers, expected for the time period. Also, I tried to make sure to listen to the original 1964 version so hopefully that is what I found. Just for authenticity's sake. Favorite Songs: Mama Said, You Don't Own Me, Do Re Mi, Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa, Nothing, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Wishin' And Hopin', Don't You Know (Yes, I know it's almost all of them but I really enjoy this kind of music.)
Our girl Dusty is just legendary
a girl called dusty was a wonderful first album for dusty springfield. it was full of covers, but dusty had such a charming voice and presence that i didn't mind. if a new artist can make covers sound new and different, then it's a great testament to their talent. despite recording songs from a variety of lyricists, the album flowed together well. that's that easy fifties/sixties pop for you! of course, i'd be remiss not to point out the bacharach/david creations--always beautiful, regardless of the vocalist, but dusty does bring something special to those songs. also, "my coloring book" (written by ebb and kander) has that same spark. dusty's voice is tender, and she took me by surprise here. streisand who?
Dusty has the voice of an angel on this debut solo album! She has such grit, range, drama, and vibrato. This album kind of straddles somewhere between 50s pop/soul and 60s pop/soul, which can both be hit or miss for me; it usually all comes down to the voice, and I absolute love Dusty's voice here. I recognize that this album is mostly covers, but I really do love Dusty's takes on each of the covers. And I think this album's merit on the project comes less from the songs themselves and more from Dusty's voice. During the early 60s, female-led pop/soul music was mostly still being dominated by girl groups, save for a few solo pioneers. Dusty was one such pioneer; she was no doubt setting a standard and a trend for women moving forward. Again, Dusty's voice just really resonated with me here and made every song enjoyable where it may have otherwise not been; I couldn't help but be inspired to go higher with my vote.
Genres: Pop Formed: Solo 1963 Run time: 20 songs, 55 min 39 sec What a great first solo album, full of hits. Whoever chooses the songs Dusty covers, does a great job and she certainly does the song writer’s credit. She was a great pop singer for many, many years. I loved the album, despite being more poppy than I generally like.
There was a nostalgia with every song, as if I had heard almost all of them at some point a while ago. I really liked listening to this and feel like you could just let the album roll in the background all the way through to set the vibe.
I was in the mood for this cheese and happily sand along to a few numbers. The Carol King-penned tracks in particular got me through some of the smoochier Burt Bacharach & Hal David numbers.
Dusty has a great voice, her cover of Lesley Gore's You Don't Own Me is good, but a little too stripped back to what I want from that song.
Fun album
Incredible. Love it. Notched a mark off for the number of cover songs. Mockingbird stolen from Dumb and Dumber for example.
She's got such a sweet, rich voice. It's not really my genre of music, but Dusty's cheerful voice and optimistic lyrics are fun and feel-good. Surprisingly soulful for a white woman. I might give her other stuff a listen, looks like Dusty in Memphis is her best.
Her voice is stellar and soulful. There's enough high points here that make me want to listen to it multiple times. Very enjoyable.
en train de vivre mon sunday morning dream (ai fait des pancakes)
A great album of covers (mostly) by a distinctive voice.
Very long album. Surprisingly short songs though, most under 3 minutes. Some nice new ones I hadn’t heard before.
3.5 ster
Brilliant, soulful, British, 60s pop. Motown flavours in places, very gospel inspired by very much its own thing. Good, zippy album
Gefällt mir besser als gedacht. Gute Stimme und nice Melodien.
What a jewel!! Dusty puts everything into this album
muy gueno loved it pero luis miguel la hizo mejor 8/10
Прослушано! Очень приятный альбом. Отличный женский вокал и классные мелодии.
4/5. The passion and uniqueness of her voice really elevates this album. She is just mesmerizing to listen to. The only downside is the fact they are covers.
nice 60s pop, love to voice on her. Easy listening
Hadn't listened to much Dusty until now and my first impression of, "A Girl Called Dusty" is that I should have listened to her much earlier. I recognized a couple of the songs and I especially enjoyed her versions of the Burt Bacharach covers. Solid record throughout and I'm guessing this is her essential album from her catalog. Well worth the listen!
She was great. Fantastic voice.
A lovely collection of pop songs. Great voice, too.
"Do Re Mi" is my favorite song on this album.
Amazing voice. Great songs
There are some classic hits on this album that are lovely and timeless. Dusty's voice is captivating and amazing when coupled with the right songs and arrangements. There are some duds on the first half of the album that doesn't make her voice justice imo. But overall a good listening experience. Especially during the spring I would guess.
Adequately sung collection of top songs.
not her best album by a long shot, but still a good listen
You tend to forget just how many hits Dusty made completely her own. The pure quality of that voice which has been rarely matched just transformed any song into something special. The vocal performances throughout are impeccable, (obviously) and the production on the instrumentation is timeless and supports dusty without overpowering her at any time. There's also the fact that it's just really really good. The song selection and track list is just really well put together and the whole album front to back is really entertaining.
Great scott, what a voice!
Unexpected surprise
This is the type of album I love discovering through 1001 Albums. I don't think I ever would've listened to it otherwise, but I'm really enjoying it. It's fun, catchy and upbeat with more varied and interesting instrumentation than a lot of early '60s music I've heard.
A Girl Called Dusty is likely patchier than I'd like to believe, but there's a sparkle about most of the music that simply works. The initial few songs expose the listener to a pretty wide variety of styles, with Dusty's voice doing significantly but not wildly different things. Then the record seems to settle in a groove, though not as far as style goes: We end in another new world, with kaleidoscopic memories of the last half hour.
Some real bangers
Bangers 8.5/10
Me gustó :V
New more songs than I thought I would. Overall put me in a good mood!
Great album. Dusty has a great voice, the songs are engaging and fun.
A charming album from Dusty Springfield, who always seems to find just the right songs to cover to suit her voice accompanied by a perfectly arranged orchestra and backing singers. The special something in Ms Springfield's interpretation of these songs seems to be a sense of displacement - a white Londoner with a soulful voice singing mostly American songs, crooning love songs about boys despite being a lesbian, a wholesome image despite addiction to drink and drugs. A sometimes tragic, sometimes heroic figure, Ms Springfield never seemed to quite belong despite being beloved by many.
Some really great songs on here, Dusty does a great job with interpreting some classics. This is 1964 in a nutshell
Carino, molto allegro. Molto bello, che bella voce e ritmo. Ci sono un sacco di classici! Quasi 5 stelle
"A Girl Called Dusty" is the debut album from English singer Dusty Springfield. Dusty had been a member of The Springfields in the early 60's, toured the US and became exposed and influenced by Motown. Her music and style are described as blue-eyed soul and pop; she also sings ballads. I hear all those on this album including some doo-wop (probably pop at that time). I found this album very interesting in that it constantly switched styles seemingly between songs. Obviously, Dusty has a great and emotional voice. At times she reminded me of Amy Winehouse and other times more of a Motown singer. This album was her first collaboration with song writers Burt Bacharach, Hal David, Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The album starts with a cover of the Shirelles' "Mama Said" written by Luther Dixon and Wille Denson. More in the doo-wop style but Dusty also gives it that blue-eyed soul feel. "My Colouring Book" has more of a orchestral and grandeur tone. A song written by Fed Ebb and John Kander and performed by Sandy Stewart in 1962. You really start to hear Dusty's versatility here. The second side begins with "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" and kind of combines a lush orchestral background with doo-wop. A very 50's-sounding song and showcases her great vocals. My favorite song on the album is the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song "Wishin' and Hopin'.'" Just a great pop song with horns, great backing vocals and of course, Dusty nailing it. I have listened to later 60's Dusty. This was my first time for her earlier songs. I really enjoyed the variety of styles and can see why it made this 1001 list.
3.9
Groovy, love her voice. Could live in some of these songs.
Nice singing and writing. Would listen again
very good
Brilliant throughout. What a voice.
Brilliant, almost a 5*
Really good and a great voice
20 tracks, 55 minutes, that's some value for money. Though on research it looks like the usual trick of an original album has been padded out with a whole bunch of other things - but in this case I don't mind,. Wonderful production. Sound of the 60s.
Nothing not to like about this, An amazing singer and though the songwriting quality varies significantly, it bottoms out at “pretty good” and a plenty of it ascends to pop classic status.
I like Dusty.
Love me some Dusty. Great voice, great collection of songs. Some ahead of their time (You don’t own me), others less so….
I enjoyed this quite a bit! Great voice; good vibe; solid set of songs.
Whit woman singing soul music makes me feel dirty. But the songs are good
60s fun
Go whitegirl go
I liked this one a lot, had a few standout tracks. 'Nothing' is my favourite. But I don't think it deserves a place in this list.
Dusty at her best, lovely voice, I found it relaxing
Full of classics!
Sweet
Enjoyed more than the last Dusty album I rated. More energy. Feels even more soulful. Dusty's the original blue eyed soul. Like Adele before there was Adele
Was so-so. Not that interesting for me
Sweet!
A new stuff for me, but actually pretty good, not greatest but indeed enjoyable
summer, summer is over
Some real solid covers
Had to cobble this together since it's not available on Spotify in the States. All the songs are though, it was pretty easy. I like this era of American pop songs from the Brill Building, Motown etc. and Dusty (the proto Adele?) is a great interpreter. Her truly great days are still ahead of her here but this is a nice collection.
Yesyesyesyaaaaas! I could listen to this all day long. There are so many great tracks on here that are both personal favorites and also HUGELY popular. She's a 60's "girl group" all on her own, bringin the soul.
Pros: - really, fantastically amazing and timeless songs. Cons: Misc: - I thought Dusty Springfield was a 70's male singer. Fuck!
Really good. Perfect voice. Somewhat dated
What a delightful crooner. This was a fantastic listen.
Great 60s compilation.
I had no idea Dusty was English. Still the ultimate icon of the swinging sixties. Enjoyable album even if she was brought up closer to Doncaster than Detroit
- Cool. We are wearing the same shirt. - "You Don't Own Me" ❤️ I like this vintage genre. It’s melodic and gives me a peculiar feeling. I never listened to this album but I discovered I already knew a couple of songs.
Good album. A couple hits I recognized, some I didn't. She's got a lovely voice, and a fine story teller.
Top Tracks > Mama Said > You Don't Own Me > Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa > Will You Love Me Tomorrow? > Wishin' and Hopin' > Don't You Know > I Only Wanna Be With You > Can I Get a Witness > Once Upon a Time
Kak može svaka pjesma na albumu od 20 pjesama bit hitČINA 乁( •_• )ㄏ
Slušat ovo i densat u kuhinji je ekšli bilo katartično i popravilo dan, hvala Dusty!
So much denim on this album cover...
Pleasant, 60s pop music. Dusty has a nice voice, but occasionally can be a little faceless. Favorite tracks: "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa"
Lush
Easy listening. Oldies
Not the best written but I'm a sucker for a smokey voice.
Pretty good
Super classic
A very enjoyable listen. Uplifting from beginning to end, great runtime, flawless 60s production, and a great vocal performance.
Смесь довольно ненавязчивого речитатива с фоновым мягким фанком. Вася В слямзил свой Царский Альбом с некоторых треков Коммона
Loved this!
An enjoyable listen to the classics
Not sure why this album isn't on Apple Music, I know she's famous. I pieced it together though and really enjoyed it. She's got a very classic sound, definitely a go-to for '60s pop singers. I didn't recognize many songs just looking at the tracklist, but almost immediately I was hit with classic jams I hear over and over again. I'm pretty sure we'll get more from her on this list, and I've got no problem with that. Favorite tracks: Wishin and Hopin, Mama Said, You Don't Own Me. Album art: Just a simple portrait of a girl called Dusty. Not false advertising, I'll give it that. 4/5
Nice
So many classics here! Great album.
pretty good
This one has some certified bangers. I dunno, it's hard to not appreciate Dusty.
I enjoyed this album. Nothing very groundbreaking about the music, but the arrangements are solid and her voice is fantastic. I can't help but wonder about cultural appropriation whenever I'm listening to "blue-eyed soul" so I feel like I should go back to some of the original versions. But she sounds like she belongs in this style (unlike, say, Janis Joplin, who I thought wrecked some good R&B songs). Stand out moments: "You Don't Own Me" sounded like it belongs in a Quentin Tarantino movie (then I saw that Son of a Preacher Man is in Pulp Fiction). "Do Re Mi" had a fun groove and a great piano break in the middle. I really liked "Anyone Who Had a Heart" - unusual voicings and progressions - kudos to Bacharach and David (I saw Dionne Warwick recorded it first so I went to check it out - that version sounds great, but this one has a distinct sound). Solid 4.
I knew so little about Dusty Springfield before now. I had no idea she was British! She's just got such an earthy style, I'd assumed she was American. And wow... so many classic songs. This was a fun listen.
smart 60s pop and soul from one of the great British voices
Really good!!
Ah Dusty, what a little legend! Packed to the brim with bangers this album! My faves include Wishin and Hopin, and You Don't Own Me, what a tuuuuune. Loved listening - will listen more what a great reminder to listen to more Dustyyyy.
Thought I wouldn’t like this but she’s got a great voice and besides one or two tracks the songwriting is interesting and fun. The backing band sounds great. 4/5
Know her work.
No complaints. But nothing will top Lesly Gore's version of "You Don't Own Me."
Música sesentera clásica. Está bien.
