Very unsure with this one! Actually wasn’t as bad as I thought, the guitar is incredible
I know this is the start of great things but this is not great it clearly is the origin of there sound and metal being born but its not good. I am sure if this was all new to you you could think this was great but coming to it fresh it's just not finished as a sound and not really worth a listen there later albums are vastly better.
God this is pretty rancid bar N.I.B. and The Wizard and even then I'm not putting them on any playlist or going out of my way to listen to them. This has aged like piss and the only thing it has going for it is its front cover. I did used to like this but I've grown to dislike it.
Didn't enjoy this. Felt like a rather long 42 minutes.
Heard it before. Honestly seeing the release year is a little crazy, truly an influential album. That said, I don't have any strong feelings when it comes to the songs 2/5
it was okay. it wasn't bad by any means, but it was a lot of ambient guitar solos and not a lot of lyrics. I also don't like when multiple songs are combined into one song. I liked the wizard the most, probably. But the guitar transition from sleeping village into warning was nice.
No thanks. Helter Skelter scratches this itch for me. Paranoid works for me, a bit. This doesn't really.
I have heard a bunch of black sabbath through the years and I like a lot of it. Their signature sound is certainly here in this album and you can clearly see where they started. At the same time it makes it clear what they refined towards later albums. It was fun listening to this album but I think I'll stick to the later songs personally.
Didn’t really tickle my fancy, and I preferred their album “Paranoid”. I liked N.I.B, but felt that songs blended together on the album overall.
Def not the Black Sabbath album I would pick. I was really hoping to discover the Smithereens' "Behind the Walls of Sleep " was a Sabbath cover but no dice.

Weirdly, this was in one ear, out the other. Not really anything I would listen to again, though I'm sure it has its merits for others. Kind of surprised by how, I dunno, bluesy? it gets. Though reading up on the band's history it makes sense, I guess I just never connected metal and blues in my head before.

This is harsh on it, but half the songs sounded like War Pigs. I know War Pigs came after this, but I can't reduce that album's ratings.

Just a disclaimer: My ratings are a reflection of my own personal taste and nothing more. Surprisingly, I really didn’t mind this one. Didn’t particularly care for the lead vocals, but I did enjoy parts of these tracks. Probably won’t listen to it again, but I didn’t hate it.
I really liked the guitar riffs and solos, they paired nicely with Ozzy's vocals. Overall a good album. I wouldn't buy it personally since this isn't my cup of tea but I can see why people would like it.
Rating: 2.5 stars Overall: Not my usual kind of thing but some tracks are actually kind of a vibe for this time of year if you’re in a very specific mood for long guitar riff-heavy music and a droney voice. Very hit and miss for me. I had low expectations for this one so a few of the songs pleasantly surprised me! Best song - N.I.B. Track 1 - Black Sabbath. Love the intro. So autumnal. Giving massive Halloween vibes with the church bells and kinda haunting vocals. I’d come back to this one for the intro only. Rest of the song from around 1m in is not my sort of thing and goes on for too long. Track 2 - The Wizard I like more and might come back to it again. I’m enjoying the harmonica and groovy guitars. Track 3 - Third song Behind the Wall of Sleep has a weird time signature or something. It feels messy and offbeat. I wouldn’t come back to this one. Don’t like Ozzy’s voice in this one either. Track 4 - Fourth song NIB is definitely one I’d go back to. Great driving song on a motorway. Cross between Born to be Wild and System of a Down. Best song on the album. I definitely turned the volume up for this one. Track 5 - Fifth song Evil Woman has an amazing guitar riff. Could be a grower. I could see this soundtracking being wronged by a fellow gal but the feminist in me hates that this is written by a mediocre white boi 🤺 Track 6 - Trying to remain open-minded with song six - Sleeping Village - but it’s immediately giving whingey sad boy anthem. It does kick off a bit but - nah, I was right. Too random for me. All over the damn shop. One line of lyrics in the whole song and the rest is guitar. Track 7 - Warning - I love that the last song runs into this one. One of my all time fave things that rewards album listeners for sure. Guitar is cracking but the lyrics at times sound like a made-up song that I’d sing to my dog on a day I was feeling particular deft with my lyrical improvising. Whoever played guitar on this album deserves 85% of the royalties. Rent was dueeeeee. Okay I thought this song was finished because it changed sounds but it’s only half way through. Why not make it 2 songs?! Everything else has cut out except the guitar. Big fat meh. Sounds like I’m overhearing a (very talented) person fuck around practising guitar. It’s gone on for so long I’m starting to think the rest of the band is being held hostage. I can’t imagine how awkward it would be to stand around on stage wondering what to do with your hands while this is going on. Okay the rest of the band have come back from their toilet break or something. “Just a little bit too strong” part is great and it’s a shame that the whole song didn’t have the vibe of this one bit. This has knocked the overall star rating down for me. Hard skip. Track 8 - Wicked World - last song on the album. I like the lyrics and message of this one. Sonically was a bit messy for me. Like I’ll be getting into it and then everything cuts out and there’s a messy guitar solo. Not sure.
I guess it’s ok. Is it really metal? Todays music exists because of the predecessors, but by today’s standards it’s rather tame.

Black Sabbath is the type of music that I enjoy when it's on the radio, but nothing I'd ever seek out by choice

Yeah it’s the first metal album. And that’s great. Thing is, I wasn’t there and I can’t be and I can’t really imagine what it was like before this happened. So try as I might, I can’t raise much enthusiasm. Out of context, it’s dreary.

This is fine I guess. Kinda Zeppliny, kinda Creamy, but mostly this just strikes me as silly. Adolescent boys playing their instruments loudly and trying to be scary and dark. I like rocking out as much as the next guy, but do you have to be so edgelordy about it? Once your band goes spooky I just feel silly listening to you. It’s not Halloween. Ghosts and wizards and devils and witches aren’t real. They’re just something children are scared of. Or very dumb people. I think that is ultimately my problem with heavy metal and thrash metal and black metal and all the rest of it. It all just seems like music for dumb people. More so than mindless pop, more so than bro country, more than any other genre I can think of. Just music for pimply, pretentious, angry, emotionally stunted dumb people. Boo! 👻
None of it was particularly standout to me. Also I was a little confused by the tracklist.
Rarely have my expectations for an album and the album itself been so out of sync. It feels tame and almost quaint for an album called black sabbath.
I listened to this record at a friend's house in the late 1970s. He went on and on how great it was, but I really did not enjoy it that much at the time. I think I enjoyed it even less now. N.I.B. is the only song that I can say that I like. I understand why this record is on the list, but it's not my thing.
Cool intro to metal. Not my thing
Venturing into the dark and heavy realms of Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album has been an experience that, quite frankly, didn't quite resonate with me. I found the tracks on this album melded into one another, making it challenging to distinguish them or find that hook that pulls me in. There wasn't a moment or a song that leaped out, demanding my attention or leaving a lasting impression. There were instances where the instrumentals shone, offering glimpses into the talent that has made Black Sabbath iconic. Ozzy Osbourne's vocals were, for lack of a better word, okay. They fit the mood and tone of the album well, even if they didn't particularly stand out to me. It's clear that this album carved new paths in the rock genre, introducing elements that were revolutionary at the time. This appreciation, however, comes more from a place of respect for its historical significance rather than a personal affinity for the music itself. Favourite Tracks: Black Sabbath

Enjoying it more than I was expecting. Songs were too long in my opinion, but I like the instruments. Don't think commuting on the subway was the best atmosphere to enjoy it, maybe would like it better at home
N.I.B is a tune, but despite its historic significance, this dad rock venture just didn't hit for me.

Heel gek album, een soort country hardrock? Mondharmonica komt in elk geval flink aan dit album te pas. N.I.B. heeft een lekkere gitaarsolo. Maar verder? Laat het me redelijk koud allemaal. Het is gewoon prima muzikaal maar ik vind weinig dingen er echt uitspringen. De vele en lange gitaarsolo's helpen daar niet bij. Shoutout Warning die 10 minuten(!) duurt!!! Is dit stiekem een progrock album ofzo?

{ Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath: Crazy how much Ozzy's voice changed between when this album was recorded and my childhood introduced to Black Sabbath. He learned hold a note but I still don't appreciate his vocals. But you can't deny the iconic drum beats, lead guitar, and bass in this album. Everyone knows it's Black Sabbath. Had to skip the second to last track "warning" because the lyrics were so bad.
Black sabbath would be at least 50% better without the vocalist. A couple of these songs were a struggle to get through but I enjoyed some of the guitar.
Noch recht Bluesrock-lastig und gefällig. Mit Ozzys Stimme werde ich aber nicht wirklich warm. 2,5 Sterne

I must be missing something, simply don't feel anything. Except for frustration when they try to play Iron Man but they haven't unlocked that ability yet so it cuts off
my dad would like this, I don't the last song having that chill instrumental part in the middle of it was really nice tho and I thought the end of Warning being that "just a little bit too strong." thing was cool
Underwhelming. Never really gets going, not a patch on Paranoid which we had before. Reviews on the site suggest that this is a proper landmark album - the first heavy metal one - but they moved on from it pretty quickly and rightly so. 2/5.
Formulaic by today’s standards, but more than anything it just sounds dark and dour really. Sure, I can hear its influence, (I guess), but if this is considered the first real heavy metal album, then I’m glad the genre went on to produce better albums than this.

I've never listened to heavy metal before. It's more mellow than I thought it would be. I expected a lot more screaming. I like the guitar riffs. I zoned out while listening to this album. It isn't a bad/boring album, but there wasn't much lyrics that I needed to pay attention to. This album doesn't make me get up and dance. Doesn't play on my emotions either. The album cover is pretty creepy with a seemingly dead/zombie-esque woman standing in a wooded area in front of a house. Is she haunting the house? Is she haunting you?
the instrumentals i like but im just not a fan of the guys voice. and like much 1970s metal it is certainly not as hard as the album cover promises
i mean, there are some more melodic parts of the songs that i like, but in general it was fairly boring and repetitive. dreadful in parts. on the edge of 2 and 3 for me but i'm sticking it at 2.
You know, listening through this list makes my realize that i don't vibe with older music. I'm 35 years old. I can appreciate their influence and recognize that a lot of theses records are fine / good, but it's hard to see the importance they carried just listening to the music. Sometimes I research a bit more of the artist to see their history. So most of these albums gonna be a "one and done" kind of deal, and this is okay for me. 1001 is a big number, so I'm gonna be more excited if I find something I really like.
Tony Iommi's guitar work on this album is outstanding, but other than that this record didn't sell it for me. It was highly influential at the time of its release, and I am usually not a fan of metal at all, but still, I feel as though Paranoid was the better album by them.

There’s a saying that bands have a lifetime to write their first album and six months to write their second. That doesn’t ring true for Black Sabbath, seeing as it was actually four months between their first two records, and also that their second album is so much better than their debut. Call it the Iommi rule?

The cover promises and happy jaunt , to enjoy the best of the english countryside. Promise delivered. File under Q for Quaint english heavy rock that sounded mean and naughty and worth banking even, but now is just soothing to sit down to with a warm flat pint at the end of a day being British. Funny that.

Just because something is a first, doesn't mean it's good. There is some passable stuff on this record. But you have to wait for it. And the solos are so out of place. Where's the flow?
Other than N.I.B. Which I knew previously, I did not find anything remarkable about the album. I feel bad that the beginning made me think of Riders on the Storm, which obviously came out later, I could not lose the comparison. I know this is an unfair comparison, but the album sounds like it wants to be Led Zeppelin with Eddie Van Halen guitar solos and not quite meeting either.

I've never really been interested in Black Sabbath's music. I can recognize that it's foundational and there are some songs that I like... but overall this album didn't impress.
50 years ago, in the right environment and with the right substances I can imagine this would be quite a cool album to listen to. Listening today, sober and eating my lunch it's a bit, well boring. The main problem for me is songs are just riffs and guitar solos, the tracks are a bit slow and not particularly groovy. I struggled to find one track that I enjoyed.
Rhe opening song was fine and whilst I understand the appeal I don't feel it. Obviously an important album in the history of metal and Ozzys vocals are strong. Just wizards and ghouls played to slow blues is just not my thang.

this is the first time i listen to this album and band. album sure looks spooky. it is from those days people thought the magic card art style was a cute look for an allbum i think. makes it look pretty indie and low budget. black sabbath from black sabbath by black sabbath: i like the syncopated drums in the opening track, the part wheere he said 'o no!' was abit feelsweirdman. not sure about the title because the song or bells or lyrics does not remind me of shabbos? I get the point is to use tritones bc it sounds spooky but the three notes get very boring after a minute or so. I like the outro alot, especially the triplets on the cymbals (i think?). also final guitar section is neat but it does not sound very special (but it might have been for its time!). second track sounds abit gimmicky to me, the harmonica tires fast. not a fan. I love triple time songs and particularly 6/8 so i liked the intro and outro alot, but when the time changed back to 4/4 it didn't do much for me. I think that 6/8 meter could serve as a great basis for some nice solos. Fourth song got a curious intro. I like the zills one or two minutes in. The riff sounds a bit boring, and not played very tightly. I think the guitarists do a pretty good job soloing on this track. i found evil woman not interesting. i think Sleeping Village is one of the most interesting tracks on the album. it seems like guitarists have some freedom here. change past the halfway point is where it gets fun. dissonant outro is also nice, but I could do without the repeating guitar riffs. to this point it is clear these people are good musicians technically. i really like these solos. it could also jusst be the studio quality was poor which may be why it doesnt sound very tight. it is a common issue with records from that time. warning is another song where guitars (and drummer) get to flex. it sounds llike a blues, but again 3 minutes in, when the vocalist is done it gets pretty curious! i guess it is shredding which is cool, but the harmonies are quite simple and the solo guitar sounds like absolute ass in my headset (might be feedback issue or maybe too much reverb wasnt a thing back then). tempo changes are cool, i like that. in the last track i got the feeling the drummer may be a jazz drummer? For second i thought i was about to listen to a bebop song, but it is not. to me alot of the guitar riffs feel alike. Halfway the guitars start playing arpeggios which always sounds cool and good but harmony stays quite similar. then theres another nice solo. not a fan of the vocalist overall, but instrumentalists are good if they are not just playing riffs all over. i can only imagin this was just popular at the time. i mean deep purple built a career on just riffs. i must admit i zone out pretty quickly when i hear another riff permutation, especially with all the distortion. i do not typically listen to this type of music, but i think i see why people might like it, but dont think it aged well bc of production. it was probably quite revolutionary for its time. i hear serious blues and rock influences. i also read up some factoids and read someone killed themself listening to this bands music? i dont think the music is that bad but ok.

Honestly eh. I thought I'd like it more but it just did not hit as hard as Rush, Iron Maiden, or other prog/hard rock bands. Some parts were really good but others just yelled about the wizard that will kill you with his magic (Rush would talk about the nuances and intricacies of the magic and how it's a microcosm for the entire human race, but this didn't really elaborate AT ALL). It just didn't really do it for me

This band was one of, or if not (I don't know much about them) the first to make music within the heavy metal genre, and for that I appreciate it. Other than that it really wasn't for me, some of it sounded cool though I guess. 2/5 stars.
Maybe it should sound like smoke on the water? Oddly, Ozzie's diction seems good here. "My name is Looo-cifer please take my hand". I feel this album was chosen because of Sabbath's influence, but because they had about 60 to choose from, they went with this because it was their first.

This could have been great, but time and time again, the awful, awful voice of Ozzy Osbourne reaches out of the toilet bowl and drags the whole thing right round the U-bend. Seriously, was there no one else?
Its interesting how un-metal this sounds compared to modern times. They were on to something with the heavier led zeppelin but nowhere near a classic album i think

I can see why this album was controversial in its day. The lyrics especially are meant to be that. The music itself is surprisingly good, and I can see why it's considered the proto-heavy metal. However, Ozzy Osbourne is NOT a very good singer, and the way he noodles around on this album doesn't make it any better. I probably wouldn't listen to this album again by choice, but wouldn't object to someone else playing it. 2 stars.

I am aware of and slightly familiar with Black Sabbath. I currently have 8 songs liked by them. 6 songs from the Paranoid album (which I gave a 4 star rating on this site) and 2 songs from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. None from this album. Thoughts after listening 3 times ... Was surprised there was so much harmonica on "The Wizard" - definitely showing their blues rock roots there. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any songs that I want to listen to again. It's disappointing as I was hoping this would be good (like the Paranoid album), but it just didn't grab me at all. It seems like a lot of folks dig this - and it looks like I am in the tiny minority of people that don't. I recognize everyone says this album invented heavy metal. Props to them for that, but frankly most (not all) heavy metal is just crap anyway - so to me that is not a big positive - haha! I base my scoring solely on "how many of these songs do I actually want to listen to again?" - and not on how supposedly influential something is. Liked songs on Spotify: 0/6 NOTE: Spotify only has 6 of the 8 songs available. Sleeping Village and Warning are blanked out and not playable. I don't know why - but I am only reviewing the 6 songs I have access to. Rating: 1/5 (should be zero)

Such a blast from the past. The sound of this recording is so signature 1970. The guitar sounds, the mix on the voice, the big heavy rhythm section, the dark power chords. A real slog for me. I didn't like it then and still don't like it..

The only thing I liked about this album was the opening thunderstorm which started off the first song. All the guitar riffs and heavy drumming just gave me a headache.
Literally 1 star, if I could do half I would. Literally so just Satanic and all the songs sound the same. Lyrics aside the guitar and drums have the 1 star.

This album like the previous one on this list (Paranoid) does nothing to change my hatred for Black Sabbath's "music". (And my very short review of Paranoid actually got a thumbs up so it seems that I am not the only one with this opinion)

It's the first time listening to this album and it'll be my last. No disrespect meant to recently passed Ozzy, but this'll drive me insane. Not a fan of this Sabbath album at all.

I bought this album when it came out in 1970. Didn't like it then. Don't like it now. They did create the template for heavy metal, but this pales to the explosive bombast that the genre became. This is no more than heavy rock. The band members are all very good musicians. But, I just don't find any emotional intensity in any of it. RIP Ozzy.

Often said that black sabbath are the first true metal band. So they are to blame for all the rubbish that follows. As tuneful as a group of people falling down the stairs, comedy vocals and irritating solos. No redeeming qualities

This is going to be a very easy review for me. Do not like Black Sabbath. Do not like Ozzy, except for a song here or there and the one that comes to mind is a mellow one, Momma I'm coming home. Anyway, just not a fan of the dark, gothic sound. Not sure my family has ever heard me play a Sabbath or Ozzy song around the house. Just does nothing for me. This album was 5 songs, each like 8 minutes long. Thought something may kick in after a few tokes but that seemed to make it worse for me. Long story short, hated it. All but the harmonica in the Wizard. Will not revisit. Will not listen again. This shit annoys the hell out of me...... 1

I guess it’s an age thing. In the 1970’s I lived in a lot of share-households. I saw & heard a lot of record collections. This wasn’t in any of them. My brother, 8 years younger than me, was the first person I knew with a Sabbath lp, but that was their 2nd album, the one with Paranoid on it. It’s the only track of theirs I could name in a line-up and I’ve always liked it. This album is totally new to me & I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything in the intervening half-century. Derivative & boring.

Honestly the playing kinda sucks sometimes. Evil woman is great, the albums pace can be quite sluggish at times. And I LIKE downtempo. Sometimes thrilled, sometimes bored
A classic. Everybody should listen this album at least once.
