Wasn’t too familiar with this but I liked it.

Pretty good I guess, but also sort of generic indie/90s alternative rock. Nothing bad about it, but nothing super special either. A bit too cutesy for my liking. 3 stars.

The first track is brilliant, then the rest have a bit too much madness and not QUITE enough method. I suspect the album would reveal secrets after a few listens, but I ain't got time for that.

Ech, no. Not feeling it. Sorry. Can't. There are three listenable tracks on the album, but that doesn't overcome how **unpleasant** it was to listen to the rest. It's okay, I've listened to 125 albums so far and I'd rather listen to at least 124 of them before this one again. It's clearly in the bottom quintile. I accept that there are good reasons this album is here, and know that there are loving fans of it, but they're not my reasons and I am not one of those fans. Now if I could just get a hold of Ferrante & Teicher's Keyboard Kapers...

Pavement was another new band for me, and this album did not connect with me at all. On the first listen, I really didn’t like anything…it kinda of grated on my nerves. But I always like to give a new-to-me album at least a couple of shots to reach me, so I tried again…this time with earbuds. The second listen was better…less grating. That meant another listen to figure out exactly where this album would rate. The third listen was worse than the first. All I could really hear for most of the album was noisy guitar and it wasn’t appealing to me at all. I was trying, and Pavement was really trying and trying and trying…if you get my drift…but my only response to that was, “You are very trying!”

I did not want to listen to an indie rock band from the early 90s today and was throwing a bit of an internal tantrum about it. But these guys have won me over, distortion and atonal speak-singing and all. I wouldn't mind if they lived on my block so I could hear them rehearsing in their garage. I'm still a long way from calling myself a fan of early 90s indie rock but I'll be happy to have several of these tracks shuffle up in my rotation.

I knew Pavement going into this, but had never listened to this album. I’m glad I did I have been missing out! Pavement has that deadpan Steven Malkmus delivery that brilliantly mixes noise with very listenable songs and harmonies - a definitive example of 90s Indie slacker rock. This album has a real joy to it, not feeling over-edited or produced. How great is Stephen’s little chuckle around the two minute mark of Summer Babe? There’s a few tracks that seem a little gratuitous and I could do without, but they don’t bother me enough to even hit skip and the majority of the songs are great! Really glad to have this in my library now to bring back some of those 90s influences. Favorite tracks: Summer Babe (Winter Version), Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite at :17, In The Mouth a Desert, Zurich is Stained, Here, Two States, Perfume-V.

I haven't listened to this in an age. I remember Everett's review in Melody Maker calling them the "New Nirvana", buying it based on that single written review from HMV in Exeter and being disappointed they sounded nothing like Nirvana. It really grew on me though, although it is a bit patchy. Listen to their other albums more regularly as they're more fully formed but would guess they're not going to be in the 1001.

Never got them at the time. Retrospectively, this reads as a less-stoned Dinosaur Jr or a less-wanky Sonic Youth.

Man. I do not ever get the appeal of this. When you sing like Lou Reed you're on borrowed time in my ears. Slacker rock? Is that how to define this? I don't know...at the risk (that I don't care about) of maybe sounding like I'm gatekeeping, at times it sounds like this band isn't even trying. Hence... slacker? I'm not asking for complexity, and in fact some of these songs do have that. But I do have some sort of baseline of composition and this is a goddamn mess. The first song is just flat out dreadful and although it gets a little less-bad, that's the best I can give. 2/10 1 star. I'll never listen to this again.

A noisy, rambling 39-minute delight. Probably one of the best debut albums I have heard in this genre. As a front man Stephen Malkmus runs the gambit from bemused to insouciant to caterwauling, which is simultaneously a lot of fun and way too much. Musically, the album rocks, jangles, rattles, burns. The songs are all nice, crunchy, compact little numbers, most clocking in at 3:00 or less. The band toes the line between melodic and noisy, deliberately teetering over it at times to interesting effect. Lyrically both clever and absurd. Pretty uninteresting

Has a definite Central Valley sound to it, one I wish I became familiar with early in life. That insight is one I developed when listening to Grandaddy for the first time. Things get markedly more interesting toward the back of the record; Until then there's little that really grabs me.

I never really got into Pavement and still not a fan, but this definitely had some great songs on here like Here, Summer Babe and Jackels. Not bad but the distortion gets a bit too much at times to enjoy it.

Pretty forgettable for me

Oh man this was exciting to discover! I’ve heard the name so much but never really knew what to expect. LOVED so many of the tracks. Will fit in nicely with my Nirvana and Pixies collection.

I find Pavement to be very grating. The production feels shot in places, The instrumentation is much louder than the Vocals, and I guess i struggle to hear his voice? not that I really want to any tbh. But I dislike it.

that was… rough look, I like being optimistic with music, but this was a damn hard able to enjoy i don’t think i hate it, that’s too strong, i just felt pretty bleh listening to most of the songs I liked the last minute of Summer Babe, reminded me a bit of Neutral Milk Hotel a tiny bit i guess? I don’t know, i really, really love Neutral Milk Hotel and it’s hard to compare Jeff Mangums incredible work with this album and the electric stuff in Fame Throwa sounded kinda cool, but christ i can’t stand the vocals like i don’t mind weird vocals, i love Bjork and Jack Stauber and Ian Curtis, i don’t have anything against unique vocals. but the damn singing on this album sounds like a flamboyant-emo starbucks employee reading his homemade poetry like he’s doing a limerick i’ll give it a 4/10, like at least it was listenable, but i would really love to never hear this album again

SO many of my friends were into Pavement at this time but I never really listened much. I wish I had - this was right up my alley!

Not my fav pavement album. There are hints of what they'd become here, but it's missing some of the cohesion and cleverness of an album like Brighten the Corners

When I first got into this band I probably connected with this album the least for whatever reason. It’s definitely grown on me a lot and it’s very easy to see how it became a blueprint for a very certain type of indie rock.

Pretty underwhelmed by this album. Sounds mostly like half-baked ideas that vaguely sound like Sonic Youth. From what I understand, this is an album that requires a few relistens to really enjoy. I don't think I will, though.

3.5, actually enjoyed this, started a bit heavy but then sounded very Pixies. Might get more into it with a few listens

I got "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" earlier in this list, and I enjoyed it. I enjoyed this one as well, but it feels like a way more stripped back, loose version (makes sense since it's the debut). I like the jangly, almost off-the-cuff-sounding nature of it. I can understand why people wouldn't like it, but it clicks with me. To paraphrase a favorite video game reviewer: it takes a lot of effort to look this effortless. Favorite tracks: "Here", "In The Mouth A Desert"

Generally I respect what Pavement does, I thought this album was pretty good, though I do get exhausted of the "singing" after a few songs - better in small doses.

This first album comes off like a more laid back Sonic Youth, but with a sense of humor and a sensibility for brighter/catchier hooks. Stephen Malkmus' approach to songwriting, particularly his lyrics, blew me away when I first started really paying attention to them. Largely free of rhyme schemes, yet utterly memorable. Obviously very well educated with vocabulary and obscure references in spades, yet he pops his own intellectual bubbles by tempering it with whimsical goofiness and the mundane. The delivery and phrasing also underscore this in their playful and "casual" nature. Although this may sound very "normal" and familiar now, it is because their sound and approach have been so completely absorbed into modern indie music that it is almost difficult to recognize their originality in hindsight. One of the main tributaries of influence in indie rock. An absolute pillar. Loosen up.

I have a couple songs in my liked list that are by Pavement so I was excited to listen to this. Some of the songs I'm not super into like "Conduit For Sale!" and "Chelsey's Little Wrists", which I found annoying. Other songs like "Summer Babe", "Zurich Is Stained", and "Here" are that nice chill lazy indie-rock sound I associated with them. It just barely goes from a 3.5 rounded down to 3, wavered between a 3 and 4.

So I should love Pavement. They're right in my wheelhouse, and my best friend loves all things Pavement. Turns out I really like some of it. Probably deserves (and rewards) repeat listens. And it turns out I really like this album. Surprising gem for me.

Rather hit my head against the pavement

This was probably my least favorite album so far. I have never been able to get into pavement.

A decent indie rock album. Slower at some points, which offers a nice break from the rest of the album which plays fast and loud.

I’m a simple man. I see a Pavement album, I give it four stars; and whilst it’s not my favourite Pavement album, there are some great tracks on here, depsite Malkmus’ impenetrable lyrics.

Apparently this is a total classic album that everybody has heard of and loves, except for me. I enjoyed it well enough, although some of it doesn't do anything for me (I can see the nostalgia factor).

This sounds like a generic 90s band. I couldn't sing you a single song off of it - nothing really memorable.

Not for me.

I like Pavement and I like this album, but I feel like they were in a lot of ways about experimenting and messing around. They switched genres and styles like a great bar band, brought their own flavor to it all, but there's also not a lot for me that really elevates them to any transcendent moments. That's not a bad thing, they are great and really paved the way for a lot of other music, just hard to rate them too high when viewed among so many classics.

I suppose this was a very influential album at the time, but I didn’t really like it.

I knew one song by this group that I absolutely love, but all my hype kind of fell down listening to this album. It surely has some really good songs, but nothing extraordinarie for me.

A remarkable fusion of genres that i love, very great album

I had to look through their singles to figure out where I had heard of the band before - Nickel Creek covered one of their songs. I don't know if I have heard any of this band's music before. I don't think I liked the album. Some okay tracks, and some I definitely didn't like.

Pavement - listens to Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground once. They sound like they would do heroin just because Lou Reed did. If we had to go through Pavement to inspire some shoegaze bands then fine, but there's other garage rock/alt rock artists of the era who I'd much rather listen to.

Enjoyed this a lot. Not the sort of thing I’d usually turn to and I thought I had it’s number after a couple of tracks but it continually surprised and delighted. Here for it. Will go again. More power to you girl.

Perfect album

I like this one a LOT more than I did on my first listen. It's not in your face, but if you get into the "slacker vibe" and appreciate the instrumentation, it has a lot to offer.

I kinda prefer the rainy life-cul-de-sac pavement instead of this overconfident shoegazey pavement, but still enjoyed it.

My first introduction to this band and album. Given the years this was recorded and released (start of the 90s), this sounds to me like a link in the musical chain stretching from 70s punk and 80s indie rock and thrashy stuff (even a little of the pre-punk 60s; not sure what the term is for bands like Velvet Underground) and 90s grunge and so on. Some of the tracks are too thrashy for my own personal taste (nothing against it; just not my thing) but I definitely appreciate how good this band is. Some of the tracks are very much too my liking and I can imagine myself coming back to hear them again. I get why this is on the list: for its time, it was very inventive and counter-trendy.

Excited to listen to this, my youth being largely defined by listening to emo - Pavement and Far - were bands I read about in magazines as the forefathers of my beloved genre. And yeah, for sure, I get that here in spades - the scream-singing, the speak-singing, the sloppy then tight rhythms, the gnomic titles (Jackals, False Grails: The Lonesome Era); the pretty on the nose, but also kind of fun lyrics (“I’m trying! I’m trying!”). This is the seed that bore my youth. And as such, the recipe wasn’t quite as honed, and had a lot of raw edges. I admire this for what it brought forth, but I don’t know if I’d listen again, too too much.

Conduit for sale! Makes this album a 4 to me

Like Steely Dan looking in a cracked mirror, Pavement provide a wry slant on... things... too oblique to pin down but suggestive enough to catch a whiff. But whereas the Dan's semi-sarcasm comes across (to me) in their technical virtuosity, these guys prefer loosening all the bolts in their machine and incorporating the rattle to Becker/Fagen's precision engineering. The stop-start nature of the singsong screech-thud-sludge combos here, in tandem with Malkmus' head-just-above-water vocals, are all you need to tell something's gone off in the fridge even if lines like "fruit-covered nails" and "Zurich is stained and it's not my fault" don't tell you exactly what. Harking back further than Steely Dan, to my ears Pavement's patient zero is the Velvet Underground's Murder Mystery. One of these songs even bears a remarkable simiarity to it--just don't ask me which one. Like all Pavement albums, S+E is an ouroboros that leaves me blissfully dislocated from start to finish.

Very indie lo-fi - still slightly disappointing

Bit weird, kinda like soft rocky punk, tiny bit grungey. Maybe with more listens it'd be a 3, seems like something I could get into, but I think just a 2 in reality.

Some solid 90’s college rock. There are definitely some amazing gems here, but also a lot of bits that could use a good amount of refinement.

I remember first listening to this album in high school when it came out. They were the underground darlings when Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden were blowing up. I haven't listened to it since until now. The album personifies garage indie rock.

This was dreadful. Seems like the music industry was quite accessible at this point. 1*

I feel like this should have been higher as technically it fits into my wheelhouse of noisey, sludgey rock and pop but the singers voice irritated me so much I can't score higher than 2.

Pavement is zo wisselvallig dat 't mij altijd verbaast dat ze zo'n cultstatus hebben kunnen bereiken. Dit plaatje slaat wat mij betreft de plank mis.

Latere platen van Pavement vind ik echt stukken beter. Dit is echt te rommelig en grillig voor mijn smaak. Latere platen zijn toegankelijker en hebben een meer uitgewerkt geluid. Toch nog 3 sterren omdat het Pavement is, maar in eerste instantie neigde ik meer naar 2.

This is one of thise bands people tell me to listen to. Today I actually listened to a whole album and I understand why...very good and reminds me of a lot of indie bands I enjoy like modest mouse. However I'm not sure if I'll revisit for another listen.

I love the way this sounds

Summer Babe is my favorite Pavement song, so this one is high on my list. Pavement scratches a certain itch with me. Kind of the disaffected cool kid vibe. This album led me to Stephen Malkmus' solo record and the song "Church on White," which is on my all time song list.

Didn’t hate - reminded me of a time in my life lol

I've always thought of Pavement as a darker Weezer with Nick O'Grady playing drums. I still think this is true. The problem I run into with their albums is some of the songs are terrible and require skipping. It's a great album, to me, if you can play it all the way through. This leaves something to be desired when I listen to Pavement. Crooked Rain is still my favorite album of theirs. I'll probably revisit this when I'm in the mood for some Pavement.

Very 90s, very indie. Not what I would call "singing." Lots of attitude, noisy guitars.

So many memories around this album. Nirvana kicked off my alternative journey and this album kicked off my independent journey. Well, maybe this, and Exile in Guyville. This album makes me happy. It was a time in my life where I was figuring out who I was and music was such a huge part of that. It was also college, and I was working at Urban Outfitters, so all the memories there. My CD even has my name on it from taking it to Urban to play as store music. I wish I could remember how I discovered them. I probably read about them somehwere.

I can see some elements of their influence on future bands, but it’s just not a good rock album in my opinion.

I'd like to give this a 3.5/5 and not a 3. I thought their indie rock style was impressive. Worth a revisit or perhaps a look into their later albums

Makes me think of Pete and Pete for some reason. Disaffected 90s shit. Love the opening track... then it's kind of downhill from there. I wanted to like this more than I did.

Ich verstehe ja vieles nicht, wieso beispielsweise der erste Song dieses Albums in die Rolling Stone Liste der 500 besten Songs aufgenommen wurde. Uninspiriertes, erbärmliches, stellenweise unerträgliches, generisches Garagengeschraddel, das man mit Anfang 20 hinter sich gelassen haben sollte. Ab 'Here' (anderer Produktionsort, auch nicht besser) nur noch durchgeskipt.

Not bad, not bad at all. I think in 1994 this would have been a very different and exciting album amongst other grundy music but it's hard to listen and not just think of more seminal bands from that era.

Indie rock standard

I've never heard of pavement before. This album was a good indie rock album, but does it need to be on this list? Did this group usher in the generation of indie rock albums on the late 90s and early 2000s?

As I've aged I've grown to appreciate Pavement more and more. I still can't call this a total 5 star classic for me personally, but I'm much higher on it now than the last time I heard it.

14 Songs in 39 Minuten? Die Musik lässt sich gut hören. Teilweise sehr gut! Der Sänger muss jedoch noch viel üben. Ich hoffe, er schafft es und überrascht mich in einem späteren Album.

Always forget that I love this record.

This album is lauded by music critics and is often in ‘Top Albums of All Time’ lists. It sounds a little like prototypical Strokes. It’s essentially early indie rock. And usually I’d enjoy that; I just couldn’t enjoy this. No catchy riffs, meaningless lyrics... just felt very little. FS: Summer Babe

I know indie rock is meant to sound homegrown/DIY/garagey/etc (or any other sly synonym for "rubbish"), but this is so laughably amateur I have to wonder how on earth it made it onto a list this "important" (term used loosely given half the other crap on it). Over 300 albums in and this would have to be the most amateur-sounding thing so far. I guess sonically it's basically a lite version of Nirvana's Bleach, but with even less(!) talent and songwriting ability. Best part is that it has guitar solos, but you can tell none of them have any idea how to stay in key or even tune a guitar, so they just used single takes and the end result is a "nah, we MEANT it to sound jarring and awful! This is our indie credo!" lie-ridden stinker. Thank you Tommy Wiseau, but no one believes you. This fucking sucked. 1/5.
