A classic psychedelic rock album. Doesn't quite reach 5 for me but it was a great listen and is a great addition to the list. Really feel like this defines the era of music in many ways
2/1001 I actually used to own this back in the early 90s, I don't remember if I sold it, gave it away or did it just vanish, as seems to happen to some LPs. Of course some of these tunes (white rabbit & someone to love especially) play more or less regularly ubiquitously. So anyhow this listen was a nice reminder as a whole. Actually there are many things here I've come to love over the years - acoustic folk guitaring especially. But for that I rather turn to British folk, mcCarthy, Jansch et al, Graham, etc. And If I need a soundtrack od the Pyschedelic era, the summer of love, California hippie scene, there are excellent compilations which gather all the hits (and yes, they probably include the two mentioned ones from this album). So nothing really wrong here, of course - like so many other bands and records from the same area / era - it hasn't aged so well, but still it is varied and interesting and full of great tunes, but it is not for me, not anymore. My favourite LP dig from Haight-Ashbury area is a record for training your parakeet to say sentences. The image - no matter how inaccurate it may be - of hippies stoned and listening to 20 minutes of monotonous voice speking "hello budgie" over and over again makes me smile more than any late 1960's pop record ever can. Happy to say that record is now in Finland at the Arctic circle, I'll set up a listen any time you might pop around. But for the White Rabbit alone a 4.
J - 4/5 Best Track - "Somebody To Love" F - 3/5 Best Track - "White Rabbit"

Vocals: The range of voices work and harmonize well. Songwriting:it’s not crazy, nor is it predictable, in a good way. AR: 8/10
Favorites: Somebody to Love, My Best Friend, How Do You Feel, White Rabbit Set the stage for that psych rock that would come to define Woodstock and Vietnam-era classic rock. Not very consistent in my opinion, but still worth its weight, especially Somebody to Love and White Rabbit.
Very nice album
Shades of the Mamas and Papas, which makes sense. D.C.B.A. 25, Embryonic Journey and White Rabbit elevate what could have been run of the mill late 60s psych-pop.
1. She Has Funny Cars - 8/10 2. Somebody to Love - 9/10 3. My Best Friend - 7/10 4. Today - 9/10 5. Comin' Back to Me - 8/10 6. 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds - 7/10 7. D.C.B.A.–25 - 7/10 8. How Do You Feel - 7.8/10 9. Embryonic Journey - instru 10. White Rabbit - 7.5/10 11. Plastic Fantastic Lover - 8/10 7.8/10
An enchanting album showcasing a spectrum of different musical sounds of the late 60s, from the more acoustic feel of the album’s first half to its blues-heavy second. ‘Somebody To Love’ is an obvious single but it’s immediate successor ‘My Best Friend’ is also a stand out track. Another favourite of mine is the Velvet Underground-alike ‘D. C. B. A. -25’ kicking off the second side of the record. ‘White rabbit’ was the other single and for me is probably the albums highlight. Dripping in psychedelia, it’s Alice in Wonderland-based lyrical metaphors go so perfectly with the enchanting instrumentation and hypnotic bassline. Underrated 7/10
Great album! Definitely saved like half the songs. I wish the recording gear was better back then, some songs sounded washed out, a product of their age I guess. Heavy guitar focus is fun, but feels like unintentional shoegaze not being able to hear vocals super well. Anyways, listened in a hurry so maybe not my best review
Dope
pretty good psych rock
so much variaton and great songs!
It's a low 4. Some great harmonies and obviously great songs like Somebody to Love and Today. Some don't quite hit. But Signe Anderson"s voice is a marvel.
Extremely enjoyable. I can't say it's my all-time favourite thing, but a pleasant listen nonetheless. I can see how this album was influential, and I will definitely be adding some of the tracks to my daily rotation.
Grace gets 5 stars, but overall a 4. Still an incredibly important album with a load of bangers.
Listened before?: No, only individual songs I enjoyed it! Particularly their jangly jam number, Embryonic Journey.
BANGER. Definitivamente vou ouvir denovo. Lembra muito os Beatles, talvez por ser da mesma época. Melhor música: "Somebody to Love"
Great stuff.
Chill and catchy tunes
Somebody to Love and White Rabbit make it worth the listen. Grace Slick’s vocals are the highlight.
gostei muitíssimo. não tava dando nada pro Jefferson Avião e fiquei positivamente impressionada.
Som en medelklassvamptripp
Вещь своего времени! Культовые композиции Somebody to Love и White Rabbit. При прослушивании всего альбома хочу для себя выделить забавную Plastic Fantastic Lover и бодрый блюз 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds.
Banging vibes, when cass singing its best
I'm a fan of the title
Grateful for this one, never really listen to a Jefferson Airplane album right on through. This albums mix is real shitty. No idea if hts the compression of Spotify or what but it sounds super flat and quiet. It might just be the whiplash from me getting my teeth kicked in by prodigy. TODAY is so classy and iconic. I thought Today had a honky lil sax solo at the end. Just googled that it's from a Tom Scott cover. Must be from a deep ZQ playlisty. I prefer the cover!!! That sax is saxy. GO TO HER has a riff that sounds like half of the garagey surf rock from bands ive listened to in the 2010's COME BACK BABY has a tasty riff. Gives me Sure Nuff n Yes I do or whatever from The Magic Band.
I mean this album has several songs that are played in every period piece movie, Somebody to Love and White Rabbit. I like stereo over mono for these songs as well. Therefore this album forever represents late 60's /70's United States. Overall good album, but those two songs make the album.
Some all time psych rock classics on this album. Gotta show it some love!
The more Grace Slick, the better
I was sort of getting sick of all these '60s psychedelic entries on this list, but I honestly really liked this one. At times, it had the ferocity of an early 'The Doors' album, though much poppier in essence. But a good chunk of it was these very solid and mellow (hipster) acoustic cuts, my favourites being 'Comin' Back to Me' and the instrumental 'Embryonic Journey. Though I did enjoy the more aggressive 'Somebody to Love' the most, it's one of two Grace Slick led tracks here, and if you were to ask me, she has the two best songs on the album. The other one being 'The White Rabbit', there's something so ominous and towering in the vibrato of her vocal delivery on the latter part of this short yet progressive song. While yeah I've heard too many albums that sound like this one at this point, I do still think there's a consistent quality to the music here that made it a joy to get through, moreso than many other psych records from this time.
Good formative stuff
7/10
Great album with white rabbit and somebody to love on it. I remember listening to this at Rutgers in the dorms with that kid from Pennsylvania with the record player. We got a case of bud heavy and put this on.
This is the best surprise yet, this is awesome (4)
Surrealistic Pillow is absolutely accurate, this album is very surreal and very comfy
8/10 Highlights: Somebody to Love My Best Friend Today White Rabbit
Prachtig album.
24/03/25 Happy with this album.
A strong psychadelic folk/rock album. of course I was very familiar with the White Rabitt and Don't You Want Somebody to Love, but I was unfamiliar with the whole ouevre of Jefferson Airplane's mach 1 run of the late 60s early 70s. Turns out that this is a very tuneful and well-written record. I'll be keeping it in rotation in the future to get to know it more deeply.
Great 70’s vibes album
3.5 stars
This is nearly a perfect album, side one especially which is absolutely flawless. But the real cream of the crop are the album's closers "White Rabbit" and "Plastic Fantastic Lover". Talk about saving the best for last. It's still a coin toss between this and Volunteers being my favorite Airplane Lp, but both solid albums for me. (9.70) ★★★★½
This is a pretty cool album. I think the songs that everyone knows -- "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" -- are definite standouts, but there's some other cool stuff here, like "Today" and "Plastic Fantastic Lover". Occasionally they drift into this hippie folky sound I don't quite love, but when they stick to the psych rock stuff, the results are great. 4 stars.
This was surprising! Typically, psychedelic rock scores very low for me. But this had a lot of substance and range.
A classic.
Some songs are better than others. I accidentally listened to this album on shuffle and repeat. After the first listen through it kept playing and I didn’t turn it off. Classic, will listen again.
genuinely good songs alongside the two you've heard of. there's an instrumental in there that i can place from somewhere but havent been bothered to figure out where
The last album I'll review before my hiatus. It was an instant classic. One song was 20 years before its time. Both singers were up to their game. Some songs are a bit less significant. 4 stars for "Surrealistic Pillow".
Man, Grace Slick is a FORCE. More of her and this would be a 5.
Hits
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. A decent amount of well known/iconic songs that I never would have guessed would have been on the same album/made by the same band. Stylistically a cross between The Beatles and Velvet Underground, which has its moments but I don't think overtakes either in my opinion. A very good album, but not great. Top tracks: Somebody to Love, Embryonic Journey, White Rabbit
🐇! I realize that this is a pretty common opinion but: Grace Slick vocals > Marty Balin vocals It's a bit frustrating because this album had the potential to be another 60s psychedelic masterpiece, akin to something by Hendrix or the Doors, if only she had been the lead vocalist on more than just two tracks. Its still a great album as it is but man do those 2 Grace Slick songs REALLY overshadow the rest of the album. Favorite track: White Rabbit 3.5/5
Lekkekrr
Two of the greatest songs on the 60s on here. Grace Slick’s voice is superb. Great album 4.25/5
Oh, stoned 16 year old me was so into this album. I re-listened recently and it holds up. Great early psychedelica without the flourishes that can date the music. Compelling and catchy tunes, further enhanced by a hell of a lead singer, Grace Slick.
Solid 60’s album.
I'm glad we got this album, pretty much exclusively because I've always enjoyed hearing "White rabbit", but it's weird to hear the remainder of an album that has nothing to really compare with that song. I'm reminded a bit of a much later album in this collection, "The La's" and their hit "There she goes", although that's not really fair to Jefferson Airplane or this album, since their other (decent) single, "Somebody to love", isn't that far from "White rabbit", although not nearly as interesting. The remainder of the album is disappointingly very late 60s-sounding and pretty forgettable, and some of the tracks are downright saccharine and annoying ("My best friend" and "Today" are an unfortunate one-two punch in this regard, and I'm shocked to read that they got substantial air-time back in the day). I *did* enjoy the Leo-Kottke-sounding instrumental "Embryonic journey", though, and there's something a bit compelling about "Plastic fantastic lover", perhaps simply because it was inspired by a visit to a plastics factory in Chicago while they were on tour. I have no idea how to rank this album, as "White rabbit" elevates it for me well above three stars, but so much of this album is so middling it feels like it cancels out the one great song. But it's a great song, and it wasn't until I read the Wikipedia entry that I discovered that part of why "White rabbit" seems so different is because Grace Slick brought it over from her previous band, The Great Society. Maybe we can post-humously share the stars among the two bands? And as much as I didn't find the album as a whole very interesting or entertaining, it's hard to ignore the impact it had at the time.
Nice one
good stuff, honestly
It was good.
It would be very difficult for someone to not like this album and also have a good taste in music. This kind of sound was the start of everything music stands for and puts the love in summer of love. Embryonic Journey is one of the most moving sub 2 minute pieces I have ever heard. Solid 8/10
As much as I love "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love", I've never heard this album in full. I also didn't know this was the first album Grace Slick was on, she makes such a difference on the sound. The sound and the music is essential early psychedelia, on the cleaner pop side of things, but psych rock none the less. While I like the more aggressive and less structured music of Can and Amon Düül, this is marvellous record. The only thing I consider a negative, is the very basic early 60's style pop songs (like "My Best Friend", which was probably considered rock music then and sounds like every other popular group of the time) and full blast blues songs. I wish they'd left those out and tried to keep the whole album psych rock for a consistent experience front to back. Which might be too modern thinking for the time.
Great psychedelic pop/rock and White Rabbit sounds like a masterpiece.
Great voice, some recognisable songs and a range of feelings throughout. The instrumental of Embryonic Journey gives cathartic feelings of reflection. 8.2/10.
Somebody to Love // My Best Friend // Today // White Rabbit // 3.5/5
white rabbit
Man, the harder tracks are amazing. The folky tracks are a little much though. So much tambourine.
I never heard the album before now. The familiar ones even better as part of the album. The psych is way more psychy. Even more original. Some really fine vocalizations and subtle (noninvasive) production. Grace is the perfect match for Jorma. Definitive.
This is 1967 encapsulated. White Rabbit, Somebody to love, coming back to me, absolutely iconic. And every time I sang somebody to love at the top of my lungs the cat sprang into my embrace. Quite literally a call to arms. The other songs, although rich and varied didn’t quite have the punch of Grace Slick they were of an era and evocative in their own way. It did get me thinking though, they started as Jefferson airplane, transmuted into Jefferson Starship - what would they be today? Jefferson teleporter, Jefferson Siri. Jefferson Hadron Collider. No matter - when logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead… Feed your head!
Wow this was astonishing. Spooky, sad, tender, all of it
4.2/5
Its a great album, good flow, bit outdated but was probably the nest at the time. Grace's voice is top shape and best in that era. Joma's arrangements were above average and the harmonies were only second to mamas and papas
Brilliant. This is everything I wanted The Yardbirds to be, meaning you can feel soul here. These folks are pouring something into this music and it is utterly compelling. Plus the arrangements and performances are wonderful. It feels live. A bit noisy, too, lol. No "noise reduction" back then. Anyway, yes.
Another group I was only familiar with by name, and I was pleasantly surprised that this was a 4 rather than my expectation of 3. The guitar tones are great, it sounds Beatlesque at times without being a rip-off, and at other times it's its own, cool, thing.
# Album Name: Surrealistic Pillow # Artist: Jefferson Airplane # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Somebody to love - A classic which the majority of people will have heard. Its a great song too. This is such a good album with plenty of great tracks. # Top Tunes: Somebody to love / White rabbit / Embryonic Journey # Would I listen to it again? Hell yeah
I enjoyed this way more than I expected.
3.5 - Good
So many evergreens on a single album.
Loved in my youth
To me this is the definitive 60s psychedelic rock album. The sound is emblematic of the time. Grace Slick's vocals are iconic. There is a mix of some blues rock in there as well. A couple songs that miss for me, overall great album.
I knew a bunch of these tracks but was nice to listen to the album in it's entirety. I love Janis so overall enjoyed this album.
Very weirdcore, I feel as if it were the abomination that the 70's had made if they had every hippie put their combined endure and love into this album.
Early Prog rock? sign me up
-damnn i actually really liked this. these people know how to craft a song and they really showed off their range here -I can’t even name what i like about it so much, it’s just very well-done -honestly very few low points on this record. the upbeat ones are probably my favorites -Favorites are She Has Funny Cars, Somebody to Love, and White Rabbit
Grace Slick is amazing. Unique - and beautiful - voice. Had many of these songs on Worst of album, but heard some new ones here.
A lot of nice songs
Rating: 7.5/10 Some very good classic rock.
I can't sleep and the streaming service I'm using keeps pausing commercials every time it switches to the next episode
This album almost feels schizophrenic the way goes from super mellow folk music to electric psychedelic rock. I do appreciate their willingness to experiment and not be pigeonholed. It was a bit long, I would have cut a few of the folk tunes, but I do appreciate this album’s creativity.
Gotta say I was positively surprised by this one. Not usually a big fan of the whole 60s psychedelic scene (which actually has me dreading a lot of what's to come), but the understated production , simple instrumentation and quality songwriting on this one were a very welcome surprise. Great record!
I kind of love this, the transition from swing to straight in My Best Friend had me relistening multiple times, Somebody to Love is clearly a classic, and overall I enjoyed the vibe of it quite a lot.
Es un disco buenísimo. Es considerado uno de los pilares de la psicodelia pero tiene un pragmatismo increíble: blues, rock de guitarras acústicas, progresivo, baladas y juego de voces (cambiando de voz líder de mujer a varón).
Very good psych rock. Consistent all the way through, great combination and palace of instrumentals and vocals. Weird out the wall, I love this.
83% Best: Somebody to Love; ⅗ of a Mile in 10 Seconds; How Do You Feel; White Rabbit; Plastic Fantastic Lover Must-Hear? Sure
still psychoactive now
3.5
I like the vibes, but I’m giving extra credit here because I love Jorma Kaukonen so much. Give me Embryonic Journey for an album and I’ll give you five stars!
A few of the songs are here are more lame 60s folk rock than I would have expected but the number of bluesy, psychedelic, rocking songs and the mega hit White Rabbit redeemed the album. I enjoyed the majority of this album after its getting off to a slow start.
The drummer is really good. Standout Tracks: "Somebody to Love" "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds" "White Rabbit" Worst song: "Today"
Mucha onda sesentera y un par de hitazos espectaculares. Me hizo muy feliz descubrir aquí White Rabbit. Padre padre disco.
I understand the cultural significance. As my wife mentioned, Grace Potter isn't front and center. It is a lot of music and I'm a big fan of Jorma, so Embryonic Journey and In the Morning made my ears perk up. Molly Tuttle does a great version of White Rabbit. Again I wish there was a 3.5, I may round up. The mix is a bit bright.
You better fimd somebody to love
will relisten! liked it a lot more than I thought!
What a time to be alive
I didn't realize how many of these songs I knew. Fun 60s jams
Despite not knowing about its existence, this specific album is what I had in mind when I signed up for the project. Psychadelic rock is a relative blind spot of which I am tangentially aware of in greater culture (60s montages) but never really deep dived or learned the context. This album seems to be considered the prototypical example of the genre. Unfortunately, I threw out my blacklight posters from college just last week, so the experience wasn't all it could have been.
Solid classic, love me some Jefferson Airplane.
Wow this album was incredibly good. I really liked Somebody to Love. The whole vibe of this album was great and I can see why it's in this list!
Neat old psychedelic rock. A nice listen even if only a couple songs stand out.
258/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Fab psychedelic rock album.
actually pretty deece
Psychedelic hippie blues. A couple of iconic songs. Production quality stinks, but still pretty good stuff.
I guess I have a think for psychedelic music. Who knew? 4/5
Good shit!
Very good 60s, psychedelic music. Some massive songs on here.
Love White Rabbit and Somebody to Love
great opening, inviting enough. nice accelerando concluding "My Best Friend". overall very good coherence and alternation of themes/vibes. "Comin' Back To Me" is BORING, like 5 pm café soundtrack boring. They wrote that song, felt like they had to hide it somewhere, ok track 5, great. hippieness is moderate, which is greatly appreciated. boring shit between track 5 til "White Rabbit", that is really the outstanding piece, which is why everybody knows that one. "Somebody To Love" is great too, but stuck in the hippieness. "Plastic Fantastic Lover", great. Rest is, um, history.
Enjoyed parts of this
Good psychedelic fun
Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are so good they raise my rating a star, rest good but not nearly as standout.
You know, I've always wanted to listen to an album from a band whose name is comprised of a US president's last name and an aerial method of transportation. Fortunately, Jefferson Airplane has me covered with their second album, Surrealistic Pillow. This album's great! Never before have I been so happy to listen to a classic rock album. The style here is very enjoyable. I like that it's not definitively one specific style of rock. Most albums fit comfortably into something like psychedelic rock or hard rock. This album largely has elements of folk and psychedelic, with a bit of blues in there as well. I like listening to this music. The singing and writing are both pretty good as well. I especially like Grace Slick's vocals. The album has some great songs, with the obvious highlights being "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit." Both of those songs are excellent, but the other songs are also enjoyable. Overall, this is just a nice album that I really like. Good job, Jefferson Airplane! High 4/5.
• 4/5 • White Rabbit and Somebody to Love are fantastic and make the most of Grace Slick • I was surprised at the variety in the tracks: not solely psychedelic, but acoustic, blues, etc. Some good tracks but not at the level of the iconic singles
General impression: this is the kind of 60s music you hear in Tarantino films Detailed review: I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, mainly because I knew nothing about them going in. Turned out I did know “Somebody to Love.” This is some killer ‘60s psychedelia. Kinda wish I could go back in time to drop acid and spin this record. It’s just got a great, layered, punchy, vital kinda sound. Some of the tunes didn’t hit as well but most of them did. Deeper thoughts (context): really intrigued to listen again, it might upgrade the score. Score: 4.2 Number of albums left to review: 938 Number of albums from the list I’d consider “must-listens”: 37 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 26
Was expecting it to be a lot more psychedelic and was pleasantly surprised in how much they mix up genres. Enjoyed the one bluesy song very much
Made me want to watch the Cable Guy.
Actually good
I'd probably give this 3.5 stars for my own personal enjoyment, but there is no doubt this had a huge influence. I just don't like it enough to give it 5 stars, as this is not the type of album I would go back to regularly, but there are some flashes of brilliance amidst the psychedelia. And, of course "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" are classics that most people have heard one way or another.
I can't say I'm a big fan of the band, but there are a couple songs from Jefferson Airplane that should be included on anyone's greatest classic rock songs list from the 60's. Somebody To Love and White Rabbit are a fine introduction to Grace Slick in her debut with the band on the album, Surrealistic Pillow. This record has a certain vibe and energy that perfectly suited the time period and era and Slick's strong vocals ties it all together. Personally, this album is the essential record from the band I need to hear and I don't need to the hear the rest of the group's catalog, especially when they transformed into the Starship.
No one knows what it means but it’s provocative.
This one’s tough. Two of the greatest songs ever written, but the rest is jangly forgettable nonsense.
Every so often in my younger days, Saturday nights were spent round my pals house with a bag of cans and some funny cigarettes and a Woodstock 69 dvd, which had Jefferson Airplane on it. Blew my mind then, and I still find some of their tracks have that ‘punch in the gut’ sound that nostalgia leaves behind. Realised after listening to this they do have a more 60s rock/pop side to them too. Not all tie dye pysch. Either way, I enjoyed them them and I enjoyed this a lot now. Way better than most other 60s records that have been on this list, and tread that line well between pysch and blues/rock. Good stuff
Actually thought this was great. Going through this list I've learnt I don't care for much 60s psychedelia, this is definitely the best example of it. Has a classic 60s sound but thought the songs in general were just better put together than their contemporaries. Want somebody to love sounds about a decade ahead of it's time but even the more standard 60s stuff was good. I might listen again but it's not a 5 for me, just not my genre. 4.5 but more a 4.
I'm fine with psychedelic/folk rock. I only knew the singles, but had a good time listening to this. I think the female vocals are much stronger, and I enjoyed the songs she led on more. Somebody to Love, and White Rabbit are great, and the whole album zips by. I think if there was one musical era I'd have liked to have been in, it would be late 60s psychedelia. Tie-dye, hallucinations, the evolution of rock.
Think my first and probably only exposure to Jefferson airplane is from the bathtub scene in fear and loathing. Saw that film a fair amount as a teenager so kinda knew what they were associated with.....Wouldn't have been able to tell you that "somebody to love" was their song, although I know it. When this was good it was great. The more bluesy, psychedelic tracks particularly. However, there were quite a lot of tracks that were too beatlesy for me which passed me by. Was reading that the grateful dead were the psychedelic band that stood the test of time, rather than these guys. I thought this was considerably better than the grateful dead album we had, but in their defence it was a live album. Really like the psychedelic blues rock sound and I'll definitely be back. Bet it was a fun time to live through! Favourites: Somebody to love Comin back to me White rabbit In the morning 4
Grace Slick's voice is wonderful. Dark, weird, explorations of life and the human psyche
Groovy man! Obviously, 'Somebody To Love' and 'White Rabbit' stand above the rest of the tracks, but the rest of the songs are still enjoyable.
Jefferson Airplane could have yelled into a well for 30 minutes and this would probably still be a 4 due to “Somebody To Love”. Grace Slick sounds unbelievably good.
How could I give the album containing White Rabbit anything less than 4?
good album
"White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" make this a four. You can leave the rest of them.
Embarrassed to say this is the first time I've ever listened to this album, and it was much better than I expected. A bit sprawling at 17 tracks, but a surprising amount of range.
I liked this. Some of the poppier tracks remind me of Oddysay and Oracle. A couple of these songs drag, but when they hit they hit. Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are all time classics, I also liked the opener and My best friend. 4
It’s emblematic of the Summer of Love, but runs a little long and the songs where Grace Slick doesn’t sing lead aren’t as good in my opinion.
Favourite song - 3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds
Great album stylistically. Perfect representation of the late 60's sound. Makes me want to turn on, tune in, and drop out. The hits off of this one are total classics, and while a couple of the other tracks lost my interest a bit, overall it made me long for the days of dropping acid and sitting in a room with black lights on. Solid 4/5
It's hard to believe this is the same band that would later record We Built This City 😆 The album is essentially the entire 60s music scene in one handy package Quite long for an album recorded for vinyl.
Oh no, I really liked this
A couple of nice hits, the rest is also not too bad
Great album
Jefferson Airplane are pretty good dad rock.
Mostly love it
Great songs and vibes, hippie music for a good mood.
Good psychedelic vibes Lots of good singles Would I listen again - probably yes Would I buy - Probably no Favourite song I'd never heard before - Go to her
One thing. I’ve learned from this project is that 60s psychedelic rock isn’t really my thing - it mostly sounds the same to me. I can’t pin down exactly why, but in comparison to its peers, this album went down more smoothly. For that, I’m rounding up the 3.5.
Such a wonderful album. I inherited this record from my Father. I oftentimes see Jorma around town and at the gym. My only complaint is a lot of the songs sound similar.
It was decent fun Rating: 3.6
Is it weird that 'White Rabbit' is one of my go-to workout songs?
Epitomizes the 60's hippie culture, with lots of self inspection, freedom, drug usage, social commentary and critique, and musical development. While not everything on this album is a strong listen, it's hard to underestimate the impact of both this album and Jefferson Airplane as a band, so even though this only has a couple of top-ten hits, it's a great album in its context, so I'm going high. Fun fact: the first drummer left (before this album) because he didn't like the band's culture and drug use. He was a former US Marine Core drummer... about as opposite of a culture from the band as you could be.
Great album, some good classics
3.5/5
One pill makes you horny!!! I really enjoyed this album. The duel male and female vocals. Light and dark songs. Good, chill, groovy vibes.
Really cool psychedelic rock album with some great songs. Probably a bit long and could do with a bit of a trim, but I really enjoyed the way the instrumentation (the distortion pedals) created this dreamy sensation that definitely reminds me of an acid trip.
Pretty decent album. Couple of my favs from this group on here. I thought they would be a little more psychedelic but seemed to have a but more structure than I have anticipated. Solid 3.5 rounding up.
La droga es la salud
Classic/psych rock
insanely well-structured songs, no frills or indulgences, just a terrific command of what a pop song should Do. it’s a shame that jefferson airplane get written off as one-hit wonders because of “white rabbit” in the grand scheme of things (NOT BY ME!) considering how good they actually were. fav tracks: today; comin’ back to me; DCBA-25
Fun album with great dynamics. My favorite is D. C. B. A. 25
Way better than I initially expected, I tend to forget that 60's psychedelia was way more accessible than its reputation would sometimes indicate
good stuff. 4
This album was pretty golden, had a couple of hits inside
Rock sesentero. Un megahit. Un 4.
Folk rock, psychedelic rock, acid rock. Somebody to Love.
Right on. Knew more than I expected.
I’ve never listened to Jefferson Airplane before but of course recognised a few songs. Quite a few songs I really liked - coming back to me. One song I really didn’t like - my best friend.
3.9 - I thought this was going to be another album with the big hit in it. There were a few nothing tracks, but some real gems outside of the big songs. This will be given a thumbs up.
Very close, but not quite a 5 for me. A few classics in early psychedelia and the absolutely stunning Embryonic Journey. But also a few generic 60s fillers. Fave Tracks: Somebody to Love, Today, Embryonic Journey, White Rabbit 4.4/5
Good album. Not just the two big hits. And it was a bit ahead of its time.
Although White Rabbit and Somebody to Love are the clear standout tracks, listeners may be surprised to realize how diverse this album is, featuring not only psychedelia, but also healthy doses of blues and hippy love songs. Through the modern lens, this may feel like an antiquated mix, but it's a welcome relief to anyone who is more familiar with the latter-era output of this group (and its associated offshoots). One has to imagine that it was a mind blowing listen upon its release in 1967. The overall aesthetic isn't really to my taste; I'd prefer to give it a 3.5, but in the absence of a half star option, I'm giving it a generous 4 stars.
I knew the really popular songs from this album but had listened to much else of theirs. It was okay overall. Her voice is really iconic.
Peak Summer Of Love vibes here, standout tracks are the obvious ones, Somebody to Love & White Rabbit, but the whole album oozes warm trippy 60s goodness. Accessible and evocative of the era that it's from, well worth revisiting.
Bretty good. Most of this is standard slightly blues-y early psychedelia (with some occasional structural or melodic experimentation); the best tracks on here are actually the slower, low-key folksy ones like "Comin' Back To Me", "My Best Friend", "Today", etc. Today and Coming Back To Me I'd say are the best songs here- pop genius, I tells ya, practically every part of that is great. The way the latter's arpeggios contrast with the bass notes, and change in harmony is incredibly interesting and sophisticated. It's honestly kind of amazing they were able to get so much mileage out of those triadic-based melodies. The sparse arrangements are gorgeous as well. I'd listen to a whole album of that. I'm honestly a bit bored by a lot of blues-based music, but some of the melodies or chords here tend to step out of the typical blues/rock schemas and rhythms which is really nice. There's a lot more interesting lead parts or arrangements here compared to many of their contemporaries or predecessors. There's even some contrapuntal guitar parts in here! Even the more regular tracks are fun and have that nice, driving RAWK rhythmic intensity. Also, Grace Slick is a GORGEOUS vocalist! I'd like this way more if she was the main vocalist here instead of... *googles* those two guys Paul and Jorma. Still, they're pretty good too, and the dual/occasional counterpoint vocals are very nice. PS Embryonic Journey totally sounds like John Fahey
About a decade before their time. Great musical storytelling with diverse sound
Great album. A cornerstone of 60s psychedelia and Woodstock culture.
This was a good album. Unique sound
it felt like i could hear a different band in each song. very cool they came first.
Say you're a teenager thinking about dropping acid (or just doing drugs in general) for the first time. You've heard that there's as much a chance as something wonderfully life-altering as bizarro freakout happening. What do you do? You put on Surrealistic Pillow -- the gentlest drug album ever recorded. It's good rock and roll, for sure, but there are plenty of psychedelic fun times with sounds and space to be had. But nothing threatening. Even "White Rabbit" -- as dread-inducing as that beat can be -- comes across as a friendly guide in the context of the album. It's plenty good. Unexpected bangers: 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds, Plastic Fantastic Lover, Go to Her
Nice and familiar sounds.
I'm told this is psychedelic rock. It absolutely is, and it's wonderful. I hadn't heard of Jefferson Airplane prior to this, but I had certainly heard the 2 singles that came off this album, Somebody to Love and White Rabbit. The Album could potentially have been pushed to a 5/5 if the female vocalist had taken the lead in more of the songs but it is what it is. My infant also really enjoyed this, she was legitimately dancing along to the music! 4/5
I really enjoyed this album, perhaps because the last five albums have been dogshit? I first heard White Rabbit in the movie 'The Game' with Micheal (sex addict) Douglas. The scene is where his house has been trashed, and he slowly ascends the staircase to see what is happening. It's such an awesome and fitting scene for this song. Every time I hear white rabbit, this scene is painted in my mind. This is great, dramatic, psychedelic music. 3 stars for the track, White Rabbit and round it up for the rest!
There is A LOT of psychedelic rock on this list - but this is one I actually enjoyed compared to many of the others! Most of these stars are for Somebody to Love and White Rabbit - great tracks! Somebody to Love always makes me think of that karaoke scene from The Cable Guy and both tracks are in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - I think these films might need a rewatch! I haven’t heard the Boogie Pimps remix of Somebody to Love for years - thanks 1001 for the blast from the past!!
Great classic rock band that are just not as famous as other major acts but are just as talented
Flower power at its best. Grace Silks voice is amazing. Her songs on the album are the highlight. Somebody to love is the standout tune but there are some other belters like white rabbit and she has funny cars. Favourite song: she has funny cars Least favourite: everything is cool Album cover: standard cover
This will take the modern listner a few go rounds. Side B greatly outshines A, I feel JA saved the rockin psych stuff for side B, see Crown of Creation. Probably their best effort all-round, with a fee true classics
Oh man, I mellowed out so much. SO much. Some of the grooviest work of the 60s with not one but TWO iconic hits. The famous stuff rocks and quite a few of the deep cuts sound great too. However, a couple songs I could have cared less for, making this a solid 4.5.
Interesting
Very enjoyable, great vocals and wonderfully mixed music. Definitely stood the test of time
I searched and downloaded this not expecting to know any of the songs on the album. Pressed play and Bang! “Someone to Love” played. Oh these guys did that…. This sounded like a typical Californian 60’s summer of love album and I dig that man! Really enjoyed it, now where did I put those flowers…
I liked this! Will need to listen to it again at some point
Enjoyed every song in the album. Just a smooth psychedelic rock album and with nice surprises of Somebody to Love and White Rabbit
Un classique rock/folk psychédélique que j'avais jamais écouté. Ça vire un peu en rond rendu au milieu, si c'étais pas de ça je donnerais un 5, mais je vais quand même le garder dans ma collection
The music is good, great even, but it's Grace Slick's voice that makes it iconic
me gustó esta banda, particularmente las canciones White Rabbit y Plastic Fantastic Lover.
While there's no mistaking the era this album comes from, it's surprisingly listen-able. There's enough variety to the tracks (a mix of upbeat tracks & folky melodies, as well as straight psychedelia and forceful rock) to keep things interesting - not to mention Grace Slick's baller vocals on the two hits. This might be like a 3.75 but rounding up because when you write a song that still gets associated with trippy experiences 50 years later, you get a pass.
An albumYMHBYD, sure, and I should listen to its hits and "Embryonic Journey" more often - and "Comin' Back To Me", now - but it needs more Grace Slick; I think I'm not sold on Balin's dominating voice. I appreciate its existence, a ton, but in its hippie pop rock entirety - despite *sounding* amazing - it doesn't do as much for me as I would like it to.
Zal nooit begrijpen waarom ze de zangeres niet overal de lead hebben gemaakt. Zeer goed, maar 2 nummers springen er gemakkelijk bovenuit. Had 5 sterren kunnen zijn
Good, wasn't expecting much due to the age but Somebody To Love and Comin' Back To Me were really standout tracks
Great album. This is quintessential psychedelic rock and a classic of the San Francisco hippie movement and The Summer of Love. ****
Starts to drag on after a while, but wow one of the strongest albums of that era.
Classics
Somebody to love, generally chill. 4
Heard the hits so many times over the years but never really checked out the whole album. The album is a real time capsule back to 60s San Francisco and is a great look back, but not something I would listen to often.
Really liked this pshycodelic rock album by Jefferson airplane.. I knew of "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" before listening, but not the other tracks.. Enjoyed it.
This was awesome, a really good psychedelic rock album from SF-based Jefferson Airplane. This came out in 1967 (along with basically every other great album) and is their second album. One thing that's pretty unique here is that one of the primary vocalists is a woman. It's not completely unprecedented (The Velvet Underground and Nico came out the same year), but most of the bands from this time are very male-dominated, and this is a really nice change of pace. Interestingly, Grace Slick (the singer) joined the band before this album since the prior female vocalist left the band, and the two most well-known songs on this album ("Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit") both came from Slick's time before Jefferson Airplane. "Somebody to Love" was a B-side of her previous band's (The Great Society) only single, and “White Rabbit" was was written by Slick when she was still in the previous band. This album definitely has some filler songs, but the sound is generally really strong and there are a few standout songs on here. It's solid throughout, Slick has a great voice, no major complaints from me. Another great late-60s album. Favorite song: White Rabbit Other: She Has Funny Cars, Somebody to Love, Today, Comin' Back to Me, Embryonic Journey, Plastic Fantastic Lover 7/30/24
Grace’s vocals make the band. And the guitar. Whatshisface didn’t do much for me.
Enjoyed this a good deal. Not really familiar with this sound or really much from around this time but I found the instrumental playing and vocals from both leads to be pretty impressive. Especially enjoyed the female vocalist whenever she was at the forefront of the song. Some tracks were a bit scant and the writing was a bit rough to me but overall it was enjoyable.
Jefferson Airplane was a big high school band for me. Somebody to Love, White Rabbit, and Go to Her were some of my favorites songs then, and always stuck around. The rest of the album had kinda faded away into memory. On re-listening, this album rips. There's definitely some songs i'm pretty "eh" on, but on the whole it's still great. White Rabbit is a 10/10 masterpiece song. Album cover: A. It looks exactly how the music sounds. Also the photo was taken in a house less than a mile from my dad's place.
Overall very rad. REALLY wish this was a 10 point scale. Cant quite give it a 5 but I really enjoyed it.
This album has quite a few super famous songs that I didn't know were by Jefferson Airplane. "Somebody to Love" is a classic and I was happy to hear it! "My Best Friend" is such a fun song. "White Rabbit" and "Embryonic Journey" are also great. I'm liking this album a lot so far. "In The Morning" is a great jam. This entire album rocked. It was a little too long for me but I was never bored. Lot's of awesome songs and many additions to my playlists. 8/10
This is probably closer to a 3.5 for me, because the album felt a little dated at times with the sound and style. The 60s were great musically, but when it's overly noticeable it detracts from the songs. Of course, "White Rabbit" is a classic, and overall I'll probably listen to this album again but won't reach for it often.
Boundary pushing, but otherwise, I find it reasonable that I only know two songs from this album. The others were good, but didn’t reach thrilling. Good production for the time. I wish they had let Grace sing more songs. Still iconic. 4/5
Lovely. I already knew a few of these songs, but it was nice to hear some new ones.
A first time listen to the entire album. Knew and always dug the hits man but had no idea how good the rest of this album turned out. Great listen into a time I was too young to really appreciate
Today and Comin back to me are new favorites
This is great! I didn’t think I’d enjoy it nearly as much. Well done JA!
Well this was a journey. Initial distain for hippie, psychedelia gave way to recognition of some classic rock from my youth, some decent blues and some quality throughout. A surprising number of hits, some good variation and nothing to moan about. A suprise hit.
Not to be dismissed as a Summer of Love relic, there’s a lot of damn good stuff here. 4/5
WHEN THE TRUTH IS FOUND TO BE LIES
Great album. White Rabbit is such a fantastic song
Iconic and psych rock as heck. Two mega hits strung together with other support songs that hold the groove
Super front and back loaded with not as much meat in the middle. Still a great listen, so many famous masterpiece tracks, super influential clearly. Fav tracks - She has funny cars, Somebody to Love, My Best Friend, Today, Comin' Back to Me, White Rabbit, In The Morning; J.P.P Mc Step B. Blues; Go to Her, Come Back Baby Least Fav - None really
Lot of classic bangers here that I couldn't have told you who they were by. Great album. 83/100
tæpur fjarki en kanínan hækkar þetta.
I enjoyed this. Especially the female vocalist. - 8/10
A new variation to 60s bands - Beatles with women. Low 4
I liked this, very 60s. I did enjoy the first half more but idk if thats bc it was better of if I just got bored.
Pretty good
Just a really smooth classic rock album. Big fan of a lot of this album. 4.5
Bluesy as hell.
Need more Grace
I'd not listened to more than an occasional track by Jefferson Airplane, so I was keen to give this album a (virtual) spin. Clearly a very influential album and a significant one for the period.
Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are so good, rest good but as standout
I know a few of these songs.
Pretty good classic rock. Just a little funky.
Another interesting case of music management affecting an albums perception. Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are mega hits that are still frequently used in media nearly 60 years later, while the rest of the album is fine but nothing special. However these two songs could easily be considered overplayed. Does that taint the album or make it a classic? To me oddly it does both.
Um bom álbum no geral, destaco o Get to Her que gostei. Mas a melhor música como já havia dito é a Somebody to Love seguida do White Rabbit. Nota: 7/10 Data: 22/06/2024
It's probably been about 5 years since I last listened to this album. In that time I've discovered that I love this era of music. The sound just really gets me, especially Grace Slick's vocals. Great album overall, White Rabbit goes so incredibly hard, but some of the other tracks didn't really stick with me.
#258. This album might have been just about forgotten if not for those two big hits. The rest of it's kind of just... there, not doing much. Also, they should've let her be the only singer, the other guy was less interesting. Worth it just for Somebody to Love and White Rabbit though. 4/5: yarp
Really enjoyed it. I love me some psych rock and this was just what I needed.
Хороший альбом, больший, нежели два иконик хита в теряющейся и бессмысленной обертке. Лучшая песня - White Rabbit.
This music holds up and Grace Slick has such an amazing voice.
One of the best and my personal favorite psychedelic rock albums
Mag ich sehr!
Some very iconic songs on this one.
I liked the album, White rabbit and Somebody to love are great songs that have a very era defining feel and I believe will stand the test of time. I like the psychedelic rock sound of that grneration and this album really is a great showcase of that.
Another good album. It really had the late 60's psychedelic \ hippie sub-culture feel. There were quite a few tracks that I'd heard in TV shows, films, adverts etc and never knew where they came from.
Classic old war movie songs. 4 stars for me
I used to listen to JA all the time as a child so this review is ~probably~ biased. Somebody To Love and White Rabbit are the obvious standouts. Really fucked with Today, Come Back To Me, Embryonic Journey, and Plastic Fantastic Lover. Just some seriously good psychedelia. Highs were extremely high and lows were better than avg so going with a solid 4.
Some cool songs on here. Better than some of the other landfill 60s shite on this list.
How in the hell did this band eventually build this city? I hope they are embarrassed by that one. I know I am for them. I prefer the darker sounds of this era (VU, Floyd, etc.), but I still very much get this album and understand why it is considered awesome. It's just not a part of my regular listening process.
Really popular songs even today and kinda sounds like everything in the late 60s, but still a very enjoyable record
I like BUT when you have 2 big hits on the album I pretty much don’t care about anything else on the album.
Such a landmark band for developing the psychedelic sound and getting it popularized. It's a really pretty solid album. Some timeless songs like White Rabbit and Somebody to Love. It's nuts that this band one day does We Built this City.
01) She Has Funny Cars - 8,0 02) Somebody To Love - 10,0 03) My Best Friend - 8,5 04) Today - 9,5 05) Comin' Back to Me - 8,5 06) 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds - 8,0 07) D.C.B.A.–25 - 8,5 08) How Do You Feel - 8,0 09) Embryonic Journey - 9,0 10) White Rabbit - 10,0 11) Plastic Fantastic Lover - 8,5 TOTAL: 8,77 (88/100) Current ranking: 31/200 "Somebody To Love" & "White Rabbit" are among the best songs ever written. The rest of the album is also very good and I almost regret giving it a four. But it's a very high four, almost a five. By the way, this is my 200th album. So far I have distributed 25 ★★★★★, 81 ★★★★, 59 ★★★, 23 ★★ and 12 ★ with an average rating of 3,42. Bring on the next 100!
Good stuff! 4.
Quintessential 60s psychedelic rock.
Pretty good album. Liked the flow of the album and the psychedelic eerie sound.
solid album with some great blues rock songs
Today was good, and I overall really enjoyed all of the songs on the album! 4/5
I have a form of PTSD from We Built This City that causes me to want to dislike everything from the Jefferson franchise. So I went into this expecting some dumb hippy music. In spite of my prejudice, I actually think it’s really good.
UHHH ich kenn nur today vo ihne, da freu ich mich s isch öppe so wienichs erwartet han aber eifach mega cooli, gmüetlichi musig ohh somebody to love kenntmer iwie au echli hä my best friend beach boys core today halt würkli en riesebamger comin back to me isch jz s erste lied wo ich so naja find aber het au sini daasiinsberechtigung 3/5 of a mile blabla findi cool het wieder chli meh pace embryonic journey recht ufd eier gange in the morning nochli bluessss UHHH GO TO HEEER die zweit hälfti het sich jz für mich chli zoge aber jz UHHH
I think this is an iconic album that really lets us feel the particular time and place it was made.
A lot of hits
Songs I grew up with thanks to my dad and his amazing, eclectic musical tastes.
Some tracks are overly 60s sounding, but many of the tracks rock. Grace Slick is undeniable.
How Do You Feel about this one Today? Was it an Embryonic Journey?
Ok, I'll admit it, this one grew on me over the course of the album. Glad I didn't jump out after the first song or two like I thought about doing. On the other hand, it wasn't until the first bonus track, "In the Morning", that I really took notice. I'm not sure what to think now. Four stars, I guess?
I'm generally not an Airplane fan, but surprisingly really enjoyed almost every cut on this album. New appreciation??
Definitely heard of these guys. Listened to their stuff but never heard a full album. This is such a classic album. Love the vibes.
Excellent album with four stand out tracks.
Peace and love, man! ✌️☮️🌻🌈
Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow feels like a fever dream. The psychedelics feel very forward, and direct. That being said, I mostly enjoyed this album. I feel the core rock elements were a bit off, but some tracks fared better than the rest. Somebody to Love, for instance, was a great song with awesome production and vocals. Today was also great. I feel like if they made a more decisive approach, to either rock or psyche rock, it would have been a much better and repayable album. All in all, Surrealistic Pillow is a good album. Best Song: Somebody to Love Worst Song: White Rabbit
Cool psychedelic folk album with some very iconic tunes
Great example of 60s rock. Grace Slick is amazing!
I love the psychedelic 60s. Grace Slick's vocals on Somebody to Love is iconic & powerful. This was a nice break from what I normally listen to.
Super fun
older than i thought it would be
What a great album. Classics like White Rabbit and Somebody to Love are truly good. Embryonic Journey is so prevalent in media and its a surreal sound that you want to be immersed in. Found a new Jefferson Airplane favorite, Today. Fantastic song that you could play on repeat. Comin' Back to Me is good as well. Will definitely be listening to this album again.
i'm a huge fan of 60s psych, and this is a cornerstone album in that genre. i used to have a kneejerk reaction to not like this album because it was forced by my boomer parents down my throat but after falling in love with so many of their contemporaries' music, i have come back around on this one. the songwriting is great and the production sounds great for an album from 1967 - when 'hi-fi' as it currently stands was a distant dream. i still can't believe how good and clean 'embryonic journey' sounds for something recorded in this era - it honestly sounds like it was recorded a decade later. grace slick's vocals on this are iconic. it is a really great package altother. and although i still want to have a kneejerk reaction to this one, i have to admit, it's a classic and important album for a reason.
Definitely see the psych rock influences. All the songs are super good, but some feel a little disjointed
Cracker. Seminal. One of the better psychedelic rock I've found. Nice. Very enjoyable. Other reviews I have read are also enjoyable. I've never known some music I greatly enjoyed, was them all along. 4/5
Grace Slick...man...what a 60s icon!
I think these guys created psychedelic rock or atleast perfected it, they don’t get lost in the music but stay clear to it and the story. Favorite: somebody to love Least favorite: D. C. B. A. 25 4.3/5
Beautiful music. Banger tracks.
When the female vocalist comes in it is super.
Peak 70s
Surprisingly good it had two hits
Folk rock, psychedelic rock, acid rock. Somebody to Love.
