Reviews (page 6 of 13)

A couple of bangers on here, but the rest is pretty solid too. Also nice to hear an album from he era that isn’t another cookie cutter blues-rock product.

Iconic 60s album

Very ahead of their time; surprisingly great. Favorite Tracks: Today, Somebody to Love

Por escuchar.

Feeeeed your headdddddddddddddd. Arguably the best psychedelic group of this era? Great album

Some sweet folk rock. There were a few songs that were a little too slow but that was matches with a few songs that absolutely kicked ass. Overall a solid album.

although it's not my go-to genre, I really enjoyed this album! loved hearing the difference of production

Somewhat inconsistent album, and sometimes to hippy-ish. But the standout tracks are really amazing. I love the poetry of Today and particularly of Comin Back to Me, just beautiful songwriting. As well as the power of Grace Slick and catchiness of Somebody to Love. Interesting production choices too, what an insane amount of reverb on the drums. Sounds like someone is playing far in the distance. The band plays well, has two very good singers (who compliment each other perfectly) and the songwriting is at times amazing. That trascends any weaknessess the album may have

embryonic journey is a goddamn beautiful song

Never listened to this album. Opening track is great. Great album. Super solid songs.

Here's a big one, a classic I've been waiting to see on here for a while. I know that these guys, and this album in particular, made a big splash in the '60s psych rock scene. There are two big hits on here I knew, and they're pretty different. "Somebody to Love" is a pretty cut and dry rock anthem, and then "White Rabbit" is a sort of horrifying acid trip kind of song, which I'll always remember from The Game with Michael Douglas. Some great stuff on here, and it's obviously a cut above some of the more generic, cut and paste psych rock albums we've had. Not sure why but that genre is otherwise overrepresented on this list. This one's great though, and deserves its place! Favorite tracks: White Rabbit, Somebody to Love, 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds, DCBA 25, Embryonic Journey, Go to Her. Album art: It's a very unassuming, black and white band photo. You get a sense that these guys are weird, just because of the funny poses and faces. One guy turned to the side, one guy blocking his eye, just quirky stuff. The font for the title is cool, and yeah, the title itself suggests psychedelia when nothing else here really does. 4/5

Not as good as I remember, but pretty good

Pretty good! Needed more Grace Slick on vocals. Wild to think that this is the same band that later goes on to make what is widely viewed to be one of the worst songs of all time, “We Built This City”

Groovy. Favorite Tracks: - She Has Funny Cars - Somebody to Love - 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds - D. C. B. A.-25 - Embryonic Journey - White Rabbit - Go to Her

Classic for a reason.

listened 1x, enjoyed. 3.7/5

Two slapping bangers and an array of decent hippie rock. 7/10

Tätä en ollut alusta loppuun kuunnellutkaan, mutta olihan hyvä!

Raikas tuulahdus 60-luvulta. 4/5

Mit dieser Musik bin ich aufgewachsen.

I really liked this! I play listed several, like Today.

This was a fight for me between a 3 and a 4. Ultimately I had to decide what I thought of the tracks that didn't have Grace Slick doing vocals, because every track featuring her was a 5. You could have called it "a bunch of meh stuff to break up the Slick Show" and I would have no argument for that. I settled on 4, the rest of the tracks were kind of part of that era that does't do anything for me but I don't hate it either. 3/5 no Grace Slick 5/5 Grace in it

I actually enjoyed it after previously claiming I wasn’t a huge JA fan.

Caught me in the right mood. Lots of catchy tunes, liked the bluesy bit.

I didn’t realize how much my RNG was holding out on classic 60’s albums until this month (every 2nd album has been from the 1960s so far) HL: “She Has Funny Cars”, “Somebody to Love”, “Today”, “Coming Back to Me”, “Embryonic Journey”, “White Rabbit”

Never heard of them but knew a few songs and loved this album

Before taking part in this generator, a lot of my experience with 60's music didn't go much outside The Beatles. Sure, I also have had dips into Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and The Monkees and so on, but never a true step into **the** stereotypical sound of the decade—hippie psychedelia. The closest I'd gotten before now was Frank Zappa's satire of the sub-culture on WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY. So as a first dip into the sound of San Fransico's Haight Street... Hey, I dig it. Outside of "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit", this is pretty much exactly what I'd imagine hippie psychedlia would sound like, and it turns out I like it a lot. The singles, of course, are just the little extra pinch of sugar on the LSD. Y'know, that's already on top of the sugar cube. Or something—I'unno, 60's drugs. Should I even be mentioning that stuff in the presence of "White Rabbit"? Big shout outs to THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS for first tipping me off to that song, by the way. Amazing shit.

Psychedelic rock just has a certain energy to it, and this album is no exception.

It’s another 3.5 that I think I’m gonna round up to a 4. It’s just a really solid album to me – I don’t think there’s a bad song on here, just a few repetitive ones where either the lyrics don’t really do enough or the instrumentation stays a bit too grounded, but I liked a lot of this. Really fun guitar, some occasionally cool vocal melodies, and ultimately, just a really good sounding album that sometimes escapes my sensibilities, but still feels nice to listen to. White Rabbit should have been longer.

vibey into rock and roll - liked the first half more than the second half

Great psychedelic rock. I knew Somebody to Love and White Rabbit of course, but the rest of the album had some other good tracks with a nice sound.

bra greier

Sounds fantastic, of its time but somehow not dated. Grace Slick should sing all the songs.

Better than expected

Has some real bangers, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" which are both unfortunately under 3 minutes long. Wasn't as into the slower, more acoustic stuff but the album really thrived when there was more energy putting the rock in folk rock.

Cosmic psychedelic fun. I can't fault this

‘Surrealistic Pillow’ is very good, and one of the better psychedelic records from 67’ that I’ve come across, much better in fact than the album cover suggests. Lots of good songs on here, ‘White Rabbit’ being the best, but ‘Somebody To Love’, ‘Today’, ‘Comin’ Back To Me’ and ‘Plastic Fantastic Lover’ are also key picks. But really, the whole album is good and it’s beautifully sequenced with a nice balance of slow and up-tempo tracks. This has aged nicely and is a must listen.

#11 Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow (1967) Psychedelic Rock Folk Rock, Acid Rock, Psychedelic Pop Ha, cool album. Hopefully these guys don't completely sell out and turn themselves into embarassments... right? Right? Favourite Tracks: Somebody to Love, My Best Friend, Today Least Favourite Track: D. C. B. A. 25

Listened to the original version ending with Plastic Fantastic Lover. Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are the big songs, but I also like the quiet, pretty riffs in tracks like Today and Comin' Back to Me.

Great folk rock mixed with psychedelic and blues elements. The lyrics definitely feel very much fitting of its counterculture roots. Does feel little bloated and some of these more minimal tracks are kind of boring to be honest.

Grace Slick made the difference. Her powerful vocal performance in "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" is outstanding. Besides that, the usual 60s psychedelic rock, nothing notable.

# Playlist track - White Rabbit # Notes - I knew some of the songs from compilation albums, but didn't listen to it before. - This is ALL over the place. They've tried their hand at pretty much every rhythm and style they could fit in this album. - Lot's of great gems, but a few also fall short. - Grace Slick really shines on the vocals, huh. Both White Rabbit and Somebody to Love are just amazing. - Also cool to listen to this version of "Plastic Fantastic Lover"! I only knew the version from "In Concert" and I assumed it was the only one. It's still my favorite, tho. They are called "Jefferson Starship" at that moment?

A fun album, nothing super super outstanding but overall very enjoyable listen. Standout tracks White Rabbit, Someone To Love and Embryonic Journey.

Somebody to love! Everything else just is the same mood.

Classic album

jefferson airplane are the kinds of bands that have... no attitude whatsoever, the opposite of any rebellious nature, edginess or anything of the sort. they have the peppiness of the archies but with less of the corny nature. mostly happy with the touch of sadness... this album is pretty good.

Honestly better than I was expecting, some good head boppers, and a recognizable intro

Would be an ez 10 without the two out of place songs Today and Comin’ Back to Me. Great psychedelic rock. Ez 4.5

Super cool 60s psychrock album. Love the cover art. Fav tracks: “Somebody to Love”, “My Best Friend”, “Embryonic Journey”. 4.25/5

It was fine

This was a surprise! Well-written and quite well-played, with two hits that deserve the hype.

Decent album definitely a product of its time. Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are the standouts. Overall nice mix but all very 60s.

Her voice is perfect for psych rock. I've never listened to the whole album, but I was very pleased. The male vocalist's voice was a tad underwhelming.

Great 60s psych album. Wish Grace Slick did lead vocals on more songs, killer voice

I had only heard a couple of these songs, but they’re classic! I enjoyed this listen. They blend psychedelic rock with singer songwriter folk and blues.

Got some great iconic songs on it. I wish it was more of a consistent album... but with Somebody to Love and White Rabbit on it. This is at least a 3.6 or so.

Standouts: She Has Funny Cars, 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds

I guess you kinda had to be there when this really came out to fully appreciate it but I mean come on. Defining 60’s album if there ever was one.

I liked it. I saved it.

Quite the mix of great stuff and okay stuff. Surreal good time, man!

A psychedelic classic. I was familiar with Somebody To Love and White rabbit before and they’re the standout tracks. The rest is a bit uneven but Funny Cars rips.

The songs that Grace solos are *noticeably* better than the ones where she's having to support Marty

This was fun. Way more bluesy than I anticipated.

Great album, psychadelic and really solid all the way through 8/10

Pretty extreme use of panning. A lot of room sound or reverb.

Psychedelic pop in its heyday. This does drag in a couple places, and it’s one of the few examples of a band where I think a label/manager really should have stepped in and meddled by just making Grace Slick the full time lead singer, but it’s fun and hazy and creative. Best song: Somebody to Love

A good old 60s album. White Rabbit - beyond classic.

Great. Better without the bonus tracks. I knew more songs than I thought I knew. Favorite song: 3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds

Thoroughly enjoyed that. The beginning of the Happening, with two standout classic hits.

Trippy hippie love Generation defining Wax poetic rock

Good album

Very guitar much fun. Energeting but smooth. Nice recommendation

I need to listen to this album more.

Some great songs, love her voice.

The quintessential sound of rock in that decade. Band itself is slept on but the music that came out of this album still lives

More blues influence than I expected. Very folksy at times.

Favorite songs: White rabbit, Somebody to Love, and My Best Friend

2 stone-cold classic singles on here of course, but most of this feels a little dated.

Great! A classic rock

Long time since I heard Jefferson Airplane and it brought back a lot of memories.

i had never really listened to this before besides the hits so it took a few listens to click but those vocals.... the harmonies... when these tracks are at their best it's like peering into another universe

Jefferson Airplane are a band that I generally looked down on and avoided (aside from Somebody to Love/White Rabbit) when I first explored 60s music in depth ~10 years ago, mostly because I aligned them with hippie culture which I wasn't personally fond of. Surprisingly I really enjoyed this album and was able to find a lot of tracks that I would love to revisit in the future! Once again very happy that I started this 1001 Albums journey. Really good: She Has Funny Cars, Somebody to Love, Today, Comin' Back, 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds, White Rabbit, Plastic Fantastic Lover Cute: My Best Friend, DCBA-25, Embryonic Journey Fine: How Do You Feel (sounds like a not-great cover of a Rubber Soul cut)

An Easy listening album with good mastering and few bangers thrown in.

Really good.

conejo branco

very 60s psychedelic. an absolute classic. Thoroughly enjoyed but not a gym album for sure

White Rabbit Somebody to love

4/5 Really, Really Good! Standouts: Somebody to Love, My Best Friend, White Rabbit, How Do You Feel....

don't you WANT somebody to love, don't you NEED somebody to love?

Erinnert teilweise an CSNY. Sehr 60er!

I wasn't familiar with any songs other than White Rabbit and Somebody to Love but I enjoyed the whole album.

So I finally got around to this one (haven't used the generator in a while) and I really like it! I wasn't sure what to expect because the only song of theirs I'd heard previously was "Volunteers" and I wasn't a fan of how shouty the vocals were. But this was great for the most part! I wasn't really giving it my full attention because I was multitasking while listening, but the majority of the songs were gorgeous and it was so nice to just let them wash over me. There were a few songs I found annoying, especially in the second half.

Loved this. A bit all over the place but so much more interesting than some of the other flower power offerings on here

Damn these guys have range. Some tracks were classic rock, some were blues, some were something softer with pretty vocal harmonies. The variety made the fairly long album pass enjoyably. Favorite track was white rabbit

Fantastic album with many great tracks.

Wish I had nore time to review.. its a classic psych album, but not one of the best

Really good album. The female singer has a really nice voice. I should buy this on vinyl.

There’s a lot more folk and a lot less psychedelic on this album than I expected. But it’s nice. And then the songs where Grace Slick really belts it out are amazing!

Great album with a unique style

Friends

I love how quickly they can change up the vibe in this album. "My Best Friend" could quite easily be a Beatles song whereas "White Rabbit" shows the band's innovative side, it feels dark, ahead of its' time and worthy of any thriller movie soundtrack. Even "Plastic Fantastic Lover" strays momentarily into hip hop with its quick lyricism. "In the Morning" wouldn't sound out of place in the 50's New Orleans R&B scene. It pulls off each genre so well you can forgive it for maybe having a lack of an overall theme or structure throughout.

Somebody to love.. White rabbit... Paranoja u Las Vegasu. Timeless music.

Quality SF Psychedelic rock

Great album if you like the genre

I didn't expect this to be as good as it was, considering I don't like their famous songs. The rest were way better, they should be overplayed instead. Embryonic Journey was a cool instrumental track. Stand-out: She Has Funny Cars

Love is the most used word in this album.

This that real rock n roll right here

San Francisco psychedelic rock at its best. This album is a staple of the haight -ashbury era of music. White Rabbit and Somebody to Love are the standouts on this album and shine on this record more than anything. The rest of the album is good but just not as memorable as those two songs. Overall, good album

Vietnam core

Ну ладно, поставлю 4. Есть сильные песни (Somebody to love и White Rabbit), но в остальном скукотень.

Great album

Folk rock, psychedelic rock, acid rock. Somebody to Love.

I liked this!

This album made me long for a time before I was born. Thoroughly enjoyed.

The only thing cooler than the other side of Surrealistic Pillow is the other side of Surrealistic Pillow.

classic

70s vibe. Can imagine m and d listening to it!

Heard their most famous songs growing up often and that shows how much they still hold up today. Their styles is unique and they aren't afraid to change styles. Feed your head!

Groovy album. Folk, psychedelic rock, blues, and Grace Slick’s outstanding vocals.

Fun album for classic hits. To find the sound of a whole generation in a way, and yet, it never feels falsely created door in authentic.

The album that set the stage for the Summer of Love. This is a first time listen and is has so many great tunes beyond Somebody to Love and White Rabbit (though the latter is definitely the best of the album). Fantastic album.

Wild and uncontrolled sounding yet tight and on time. Perhaps that’s just Jefferson Airplane

Nothing sounds more 60's

4/5. A fun and catchy psychedelic album with some great and classic songs here that will be on repeat. There isn't necessarily a bad one on this one but it's not all perfect songs. Still a repeat listen though, especially for Somebody to Love and White Rabbit.

Magico

Another great album! It bears similarities to much more modern music so I can only imagine it must have influenced a lot of artists - it certainly sounds ahead of its time to me (although I am no expert). I really enjoyed this. Rating: 4/5 Fave track: Somebody to Love

It was okay. I didn't like the songs beyond the hits very much. All the songs related to each other well, though.

Enjoyed it, most of the songs were forgettable however. Favorite is White Rabbit.

Pretty decent, but only 4 songs were really bangers

This is old, but really good. Fits into the category of music I like. I see some classic songs on here already,

A classic. Never heard it from beginning to end. I was just listening to some Bossa Nova, so this is quite the contrast.

Incredible to believe that two of the most iconic tracks of the 1960s didn't top the charts! The album is good. The songs, individually, are better.

I love White Rabbit. There are lot of good bluesy, groovy songs to go along with it. Very solid album all in all.

LSD huh

I don’t have much to say about this one except for how it uses alot of different styles and does them all pretty well. Thinking about it in the lens of Alice in Wonderland, it is kind of a surreal journey from one destination to the next. That isn’t to say it doesn’t hav it’s. Forgetttable tracks though

I only knew of the two hits on this album but the rest are great and often quite beautiful Grace Slick’s voice is so spooky. It doesn’t seem to belong to any time period in particular, it’s like a cosmic ghost warbling through space and time. Whatever that means… it’s awesome. I have no idea who the male singer is but I really enjoyed his singing. The rhythm of the album feels a little off kilter at times - I got whiplash between Somebody To Love and My Best Friend - however I think it maintains equilibrium after that. It’s a strange album but I think I might just love it.

"Go to Her" comparte la fuerza y psicodelia de "Somebody to Love", manteniendo la energía del álbum. En su conjunto, este disco es una experiencia integral, nostálgica y profundamente entretenida. Este álbum te lleva a un viaje musical a una era pasada, donde la música era una revolución en sí misma.

A few songs were good but wasn’t really feeling this one

Nostalgic, decent variety between songs with sort of a relaxing tone throughout. Rock and western almost?

solid album

I was familiar with a bunch of the songs on here so it was great to hear the non-hits. The other songs were great but not solid enough to make this a 5 star. 4.5/5

Enjoyed this one.

It was fun

enjoyed the guitars, interesting mix of song tempos, not a go to but an interesting listen. liked the more blues songs

Highlights: Somebody to Love, White Rabbit Psychedelic rock done juuuust right.

Grace Slick is the best part about this album. Some songs get long winded, but perfect for some days when you need a blues song that seemingly never ends.

This is one of the best albums to come out of the summer of love. It’s anchored by the massive hits ‘Somebody to Love’ and ‘White Rabbit’ with decent folk inspired psychedelic blues rock in between. The best part of this album is Grace Slick’s massive vocals which define Jefferson Airplane for me.

I get how important this album is for the psychedelic rock and rock and roll in general, but, whereas some some of the songs are legendary tunes, others are a little bland. Rating: 3.5

I knew the hits but hadn’t heard the whole thing. Classic 60s/70s sound

Excellent, couple of stone cold classics, and acoustic tracks I hadn't heard really hold up well against modern stuff.

Me da un poco de pereza el psychodelic, pero objetivamente bueno

I really like this album. I never realized how similar sounding they were to the Mamas and the Papas. My only real exposure to them has been "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love." Nice to finally listen. The bluesy stuff was good but not as good as the first half. Feels like two different bands. Too bad this band eventually became Starship.

Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are standout classics. Embryonic Journey is a some nice bit of guitar play. And the rest of the record is just great classic folk/psychedelic rock.

One of the only psychedelic rock albums I actually like. This wasn't my first time listening to this.

some classic songs surd restively well

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I had, of course, heard Somebody to Love and White Rabbit, but wasn’t expecting much from the rest of the album. Many of the songs reminded me of Velvet Underground or Bob Dylan. 8/10

I've found this a very difficult album to rate. When it's firing, it's up there with the best. However, there are probably a couple too many tracks which are just "okay" to justify a 5-star rating. The best tracks are almost entirely the ones with Grace Slick on lead vocals. Her vibrato and passion are infectious. A great album, but just not quite a masterpiece.

I feel how this album influenced the music industry. At first, I thought this album was younger. 1970-ish? Thank you Jefferson Airplane for influencing psychedelic rock! Somebody to Love & White Rabbit 5/5 Personal enjoyment: 4/5

I’ll admit that In The Morning is a very strange track to throw on this album considering it is southern blues on a white-washed California rock album. The guitar work on 3/5 mile is crunchy and delicious! I really like the female vocalist and even the others sound good. Talented musicians and some good hits on this.

A delightful mess of an album-clearly on the cusp of transition and showing off all that they can do. Some classic songs here with some undiscovered (by me) gems

This album was so much fun. It’s also nice to be listening to an album and suddenly learn the roots of a viral social media song.

i knew the songs 'somebody to love' and 'white rabbit' which i loved! others were good, i would say 3.7ish

Unbelievable blend of folk, rock, bubblegum pop and psychedelia. The tracks with Grace Slick on lead vocal suck you in and hold on. Get a lot of Fleetwood Mac rumours vibes out of it

4 for White Rabbit and Somebody to Love

Really fun psychedelic music, I remember the first time I heard White Rabbit and thinking it was such an interesting song just building the entire time. I like the variety of sounds the album captures while remaining a good fit. Somebody to Love, White Rabbit, and In the Morning all have very different vibes but they match together well.

There are some highs & lows on this one....but the highs are like the quintessential sound of psychedelia...I've got to give it that extra star out of respect

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I find most psychedelic music to be kind of goofy and dumb, but Jefferson Airplane manages to exist in the genre while being simultaneously able to be taken seriously. Creative instrumentation, nice genre bending, a really good listen.

Some really great songs on this album. I really enjoyed this one.

Folk rock, psychedelic rock, acid rock. Somebody to Love.

Gets a 4 just bc white rabbit is such a fucking banger. The rest of the album is solid but that song just RIPS!

Great psych rock album. Gotta be their best? While their massive hits on the record have been played so much that the enjoyment is diminishing returns for me, re-listening Friday the rest of the tracks demonstrate while they don't particularly stand out, it's no fluke. I don't find any serious weak points here. I think my only critique is that I wish they gave Grace Slick the mic more.

Other than the famous singles, I found this pretty dull. I do really like those singles though so I’ll give it a 4.

Outside of the two all-time great songs (Somebody to Love and White Rabbit) this is a very good but not great record.

A perfect example of psychedelic rock and the genres it draws from. There is rock, folk, blues and combinations of all three, and while the album had songs in diff genres nothing sounded out of place. This album helped give me a real sense of the Summer of Love in San Francisco and I think I would have really enjoyed seeing this band live in its prime. I Loved the guitar solos and drum parts and thought that Jorma Kaukonen's guitar playing was kind of like mine. It's not perfect but it's able to communicate what it wants to and gets the job done. I also love bands with multiple singers so it was fun to hear different lead vocalists and crafted a communal vibe very fitting with the summer of love. Favorite tracks "Somebody to Love, Embryonic Journey, White Rabbit".

White Rabbit is an absolute banger. The vocals on it are just amazing. The rest of the ablum is pretty good as well. Almost a 5.

I like this, it reminds me of summers in the kitchen with dad doing DIY and the boys running about

haha classics

everyone knows the singles but the rest of the album is surprisingly different. still really solid.

I had so much fun with this album, there was a lot of variety in style and genre and it all sounded solid!

Did this album, in part, spawn a blog project name? Yes

Molto bello, mi è piaciuto, chill e psichedelico, figo

2 absolutely amazing songs and other good songs.

Get's me nostalgic to a time I've never experienced.

Starts out strong and has a couple of amazing songs. Ends a bit weak, but good overall.

This was an awesome album! Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish! Added to the list to own!

Jefferson Airplane! solid album that feels like it's def from '67

Really enjoyed this

Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are absolute classics, of course. Sadly the rest of the album didn't grab me as much.

good ol fashioned psychedelia and rock n roll. her voice is triumphant. these singles are iconic. that instrumental track sounds like leo kottke. all positive vibes baby!

Not really my style overall but there are clear, undeniable cultural touchstones (Somebody to Love, White Rabbit) here. I've heard those songs all over the place through my life. 60 years later and the music is still kicking, it's fascinating!

The late 60s, early 70s have such a unique sound to them you can pick them out very easily, and Jefferson Airplane is one of the reasons for that

Classic enduring psychedelic songs that are still great to listen to!

It waa great

Good dose of psychedelic rock

Simply one of the best psychedelic rock offerings out there. Aside from the hits, I’ve always liked Today and DCBA -25. This album has great variety. Some powerful tracks, but knows when to slow things down.

I really prefer Jefferson Starship, actually. The album is great for feeling pillow fabrics at IKEA. So plush. I was hesitant about this one because honestly I don’t know much Airplane other than the hits. How do I feel about it? I’m very into it. Not sure if it was just Today, but I found that it had quite a bit more variety than I was expecting, with some classic feel good 60s vibes, but also some ballad, blues, and acoustic licks. The biggest surprise was that Grace Slick doesn’t sing all the songs? Like, whats that all about? G-Slicks is a babe. But the committee vocal section really rang true on most tracks. The two big hits are obviously great tunes, and I could feel them coming back to me with each listen. With Somebody to Love being an all timer, and White Rabbit being the LSD Anthem. But the surprise of the record was My Best Friend, which started out as a “whatever, 60s feel good track” but it sneakily slips into some groovy acoustic blues lick that gives the song a cool dimension. Seems to be the theme of the album - lot of subtle dimension and good vibes. Deserves the praise is gets. Plus, any band with a flautist is aces in my books. Or is it flutist?

Is this ever a 60s album. The instrument tone and mixing just has the quintessential 60s feel. This album is really quite decent, with a lot of good songs spread throughout. Two highlights for me are the massive song Somebody to Love and the instrumental Embryonic Journey. Embryonic has a Jimmy Page-esque feel. There are great performances by guitar, bass and vocals all over this album. There's also a variety of song tempos and styles. I really wasn't expecting much from this bunch of hippies, but as it turns out this album gave me everything I look for. Pleasantly surprised by this one.

Easy listening and very enjoyable vibe. Some awesome hits on this album too.

This album required 3 listens to appreciate. The 60's influence is psychedelic and groovy; the sort of music my grandfather grew up with. Very well done I kept half the album on Spotify.

A bit different than I was expecting. But overall pretty good 70s trippy rock type album

Weak opening track but the rest was awesome.

Very good

Still a classic. It’s not 100% my favorite but it’s great

It was quite good, the standouts being Somebody to Love, 3/5 of a Mile and White Rabit. Classic psychedelic rock album. They almost lost me at time in the first half but from White Rabit on they really closed this album out strong. Could have benefited from dropping a few tracks and trimming this up a bit but it’s still great. 4 stars

Incredible album. Just listened to it last week as well so not much more to say than what is said but very solid album.

It was the 60's. Music was everything and Grace Slick was/ is a rock legend. Wish she did more of the vocals but as is, this album holds up to the test of time.

A great album that fits well within its time and still sounds relevant today…

My name is Lorenzo se duvois. My friends call me lsd.

Definitely didn't expect the rest of the album to sound the way it did in comparison to "Somebody to Love" Not surprising that I heard some Beatles in there or rather that era given this album was released in '67. Track #6 "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds" was quite the (welcome) wake up call after the gradual sleepy time area the album had gone into. "How Do You Feel" is one of the only times outside of Jethro Tull that I've heard flute. Of course the legendary "White Rabbit" is still a masterpiece. Thanks to this album being on the list I finally looked into the differences in Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship (and Starship).

Niet verkeerd

a staple from that era. brings back so fond memories of a easier time

Rolling Stone apparently had this thing as one of the Top 150 albums of all-time in their first two polls, then dropped it down to 471 in their most recent polling. Fuck Rolling Stone. They were right the first two times. The album's reputation is earned from the two giant, timeless bangers (Somebody To Love and especially the ubiquitous White Rabbit) and for it being the announcement of one the essential female rock vocalists. Grace Slick brings everything to an entirely new level, and like most listeners, I find myself wishing she sang lead on every track. But in 1967, having her take charge of the band's two biggest single was a huge deal. Grace Slick is such a presence that even her backing and co-lead vocals overshadow anyone in her orbit. Go ask Alice, I think she'll know.

Classic

This album marks a transition to more expressive psychedelic and emotional music. Absolutely influential and, though rough at times, played a big roll in creating the revolution of the 60's. White Rabbit is the perfect analogy to exploring the unknown given its' consistent use to flash back to the Vietnam war

It's a good album, but not quite as good as the hits of the album: Somebody to Love, and White Rabbit.

Thank god for Grace Slick!!! just a couple tracks here that i didn't love & so it is just below a 5.

This album oozes San Fran Summer of Love. Do they even need to have verses for Somebody to Love? That song and Slick's composition White Rabbit are quite good. Who knew the rhythm section wouldn't fall apart without Skip on drums - lol. I'm glad they included one of his compositions, My Best Friend, which is nicely done and very psychedelic. This album makes Jefferson Airplane heavily associated with psychedelic and Haight Ashbury - not at the level of the Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holdco but up there. These were the good days of psychedelic. Peace.

This is the first album that pops into my head when someone mentions 60s psychedelic. “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit” are iconic songs that still sound good and keep working their way back into popular culture. “Today” is a lovely folk ballad and I like the duelling vocals on “She has Funny Cars”. The other songs aren’t as strong but they’re nice period pieces that transport me back to Haight Ashbury in the summer of love.

It was a good album. Somebody To Love and White Rabbit are all timers. The album was good as a whole. I enjoyed it for the most part. It ia better than a 3 and really a solid 4 but I will round up.

I'm an easy sell for 60s psychedelia, what can I say. I dig the folk elements here but mixing them with the psych rock really elevates it for me. Grace Slick's vocals are gorgeous here as well.

oh, good old Jefferson Airplane - definitely on several playlists I have.

You had me at surrealistic.

Embryonic Journey is the most beautiful song on this album. These guys need some haircuts, they make the Beatles look normal.

This is clearly an important album that belongs on the list. No question. I might find the vocals a bit too cleanly harmonic (these 60s harmonies lack interest and dissonance!) and the tunes ridiculously overplayed (remember, I was a child of hippies and overexposed to this stuff from birth), but there is a lot to like about this album - especially the instrumentation and the cohesive themes. It is quintessential flower power, but you really can't help but groove along with it. 4/5 despite the fact that I'm pretty tired of this stuff.

8/10 - honestly enjoyed this way more than I thought I would.

She Has Funny Cars- 8 Somebody to Love- 8.5 My Best Friend- 8 Today- 9 Comin' Back to Me- 7 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds- 8 D. C. B. A. -25- 8 How Do You Feel- 7 Embryonic Journey- 7 White Rabbit- 10 Plastic Fantastic Lover- 8 In The Morning- 8 (nice blues) J.P.P Mc Step B. Blues- 7 Go To Her- 8 Come Back Baby- 8

Hugely enjoyable, must surely have sounded so fresh at the time and still does today. White Rabbit is an obvious highlight and Grace Slick’s vocals are terrific - full of menace and ambiguity. Hugely influential and a cultural cornerstone in so many ways, thoroughly deserving of its place on this list.

It is quite a lovely album, I must say. There are some very good song, and I even knew one of them. It can be listened to every now and again. I would certainly recommend it.

Worth it just for the big hits on the album, but the rest just don’t stand up to Somebody to Love and White Rabbit

"Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" were the most popular songs I recognized on the album. Was generally fine; no major opinion of it. 6/10.

A lot different than I thought

I liked it, but it is really the two big hits here that juuuuust elevate this album to 4 stars. The remaining songs are good but don't make it stand out too far from it's contemporaries.

This week we had Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin and Grace Slick! If the selections are random, the gods shined on us this week. This album was quintessential psychedelic rock. Essential listening, and very enjoyable.

Jefferson Airplane doesn't get the credit that they deserve. Or if they do, I haven't heard of it. Regardless, this album was pretty great.

I enjoyed this album, but White Rabbit is so incredible nothing else really compared to it.

God I love rock music. Took me a few minutes to warm up to the lead singer's voice, but once I did I was totally on board. Yes, it's nothing that hasn't been done before, and yes, the mix is really weird and everything sounds like it's far away and dreamy, but this album just has some really, really good songs. My favorites were "Comin' Back to Me," "My Best Friend," and "In The Morning." Maybe I was just in a good mood today, but cmon - these songs are just infectious (and the weird mixes are definitely part of it). There are certainly some weaker moments through the album - I think I get what they were going for with the ending, but it was pretty poorly-executed. Despite all this, made me rediscover my love of rock and roll. Will put it on next time I want to smile.

Grace Slick! Not just White Rabbit, Somebody to Love, Today and some other songs, although that would almost be enough. Those songs tower. DCBA 25 is also pretty great. Feed your head!

42 de fièvre, c'est le moment idéal pour écouter du Jefferson Airplane

relatable j’étais en train de changer mes draps

Awesome psychedelic rock album. White Rabbit and Somebody to Love are the biggest tracks on this but it would be a mistake to think that they're the only ones worth hearing.

Jefferson Airplane were a 60's psychadelic rock band. They had two singers, Grace Slick (this was her first album made with the band), and Marty Balin. There is no trouble telling that this music hails from the Flower Power hippy generation, as the themes of peace and love are laced all through this album. Grace has an almost haunting voice, especially in the song Somebody to Love. The harmonies reached by her and Marty are teriffic. There was a lot of experimentation going on in this album (and also the expanded re-release of the album in 2003) with different styles of music, as well as the inclusion of various instruments. In The Morning, for example, is an excellent blues song, which included Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) on one of the guitars. Jerry also was included in the songs: Today, Plastic Fantastic Lover, Comin' Back to Me, and J.P.P. McStep B. Blues, and played the part of "Sage council" for the band and helped arrange the songs for the album. How Do You Feel has a flute included in the musical accompaniment. Jorma Kaukonen dabbled away at the fantastic instrumental number Embryonic Journey. White Rabbit is a song about Alice in Wonderland, whose lyrics would be super trippy if you were on heavy psychadelics. In fact the whole album would hit different if you were stoned. Overall, a great album! I have never delved into Jefferson Airplane before, but there is some great stuff here. Will listen again! Favourite songs: Somebody to Love, 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds, Embryonic Journey, White Rabbit, Plastic Fantastic Lover, In The Morning Least favourite songs: Comin' Back to Me 4/5

Some undeniable high points, but overall the album feels like it has too much fluff. 3.5/5

Superb. Grace Slick's vocal on Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are amongst my favourites by a female artist.

Classic psychedelic record. Always love giving this one a spin.

Unfortunately it’s impossible for me not to think of The Cable Guy when I hear “Somebody To Love.” Cool album though!

Why doesn’t Grace just write and sing every song?

Always loved this album - classic folk rock / psychedelia, especially the contributions of Grace Slick and Jorma Koukonen.

Vraiment pas pire, beaucoup plus diversifié que ce que je pensais comme sons

Pioneering work - difficult to give less than four stars...

A classic of the period

Banger

Kinda smacks

Classic

She has funny cars- Interesting harmonies but don’t think song gets across point very well Somebody to love- love how it sounds quite ominous and intense👍 My best friend- me to my cat Today- very lowkey but gorgeous love song👍 Comin’ back to me- Another wistful song, with some beautiful lyrics, also the hook being just the title really works👍 3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds- think instrumental is groovy, vocals don’t really work for me here Dcba-25, how do you feel- both sound a bit like rejected Beatles songs tbh Embryonic journey- cute little instrumental White rabbit- honestly Lewis Carroll carried psychedelia, icon👍 Plastic fantastic lover- there have always been tv is bad songs I guess👍 Very strong album with a bit of fluff in the middle. 4/5

Some of the most iconic hits of their time, rest of the album is a little inconsistent but overall an amazing piece of art!

A great album of counterculture in the 60s. Edgier than their contemporaries, the songs range in tempo and dynamics, with some acoustic, some blues, some psychedelic, while being a rock n roll album at its core. I love the interchanges between female and male vocals.

A great combination of folk rock and progressive/psychodelica. The songs were all enjoyable and especially the mixing up of the vocals with male and female singer knew to convince

Solid album. White Rabbit is a classic but Fav track: She Has Funny Cars

asleep in a good way 3.8/5

8/10 beri nice

Awesome album. 'Somebody To Love' and 'White Rabbit' are absolute classics. 'Today' is also a beautiful song. 4/5

Some classics here, love White Rabbit.

This album feels surrealistic, I like a lot the songs here, really defines the music era back then, would love to hear it again

A carnival of delights from one of the best psychedelic rock bands to ever do the damn thing! Grace Slick is the extra special secret ingredient this band needed to become a taste explosion in everyone's mouths. Yeah, I'll stand by that weird analogy. Made sense to me when I was tripping on LSD and following Alice down the rabbit hole.

A cornerstone in psychedelic rock of the mid to late Sixties, Surrealistic Pillow is Jefferson Airplane at its most indelible. With a hard edged sound mixed with folkish tendencies, it is hard to envision 1967 without this album and it is hard to imagine the Airplane without this album in their repertoire. Perhaps one of the plenty examples of what defined the oft-cited and pined after Summer of Love, this is a great spectacle to behold. Favorites: She Has Funny Cars, Somebody to Love, Today, 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds, How Do You Feel, Embryonic Journey, White Rabbit, Plastic Fantastic Lover.

Nice music, definitely the definition of the late 60s hippie pop movement. Easy to listen to. Folky in a good way.

Absolutely loved this 60s psych pure bliss! Recognised a few but was so glad to hear it as a complete album. Listened 3 times. So cool!

Some good oldschool rock album. The album is diverse. Catchy at times. Have I enjoyed it? Yes! Would I listen to it again? Probably yes.

Apart from the obvious songs, I've never heard this record before. I was pleasantly surprised by it. For an album almost 60 years old, this really stands the test of time. Will definitely listen again.

My favorite hippie album of all time. It helps that Grace Slick is a GOAT singer, but this sound never gets better from here. B+

Somebody to Love White rabbit Grace Slick is the woman who sings these and she must be from heaven

Fascinating to hear the « other » songs on this album. I didn’t realize they played such great blues. A great discovery.

I really liked it. It was a kind of folk music that I usually am put off by but it was truly pleasant. I wish I had listened more closely but I know I’ll listen to them again!

White Rabbit and Somebody to Love are popular songs for a reason

good album

A really enjoyable Sunday morning soundtrack. This has a few well known hits and a bunch of well put together songs.

This is the Summer of Love in an album - tuneful psychedelia with some great vocals and familiar melodies.

Obvious classic of its era that still holds up in my book.

Had some songs I knew

Some of the hippy-dippy stuff hasn't aged well, but it's still a landmark album of the psychedelic era. They really hit the jackpot when they found Grace Slick - her vocals are just amazing. Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are of course classics, but Embryonic Journey is the highlight for me. 4 stars.

Blast from the past deliciousness.

I've heard just about a handful of these songs with some regularity, and a few others maybe once or twice in previous listens. It's impressive how the lesser-known songs are so starkly different from the popular tracks on the album, really gluing the whole thing together without feeling like just bridges between the hits. Definitely captures a moment in time for the psychedelic era. Favorites: Today & Comin' Back to Me

not much to say other than the fact it’s an amazing album.

4.5 - I’d consider this among the most accomplished records within the psychedelic canon. “White Rabbit” by itself is a pillar within the genre. Lots of other great songs here besides “Don’t You Want…” including “Plastic Fantastic Lover.”

I need more of the vocalist from white rabbit and somebody to love. She fucking kills.

'Somebody to Love' and 'White Rabbit' are great, just great. There's a lot that's very good here - psych rock that's not embarrassing. It's not Jefferson Starship, tough.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Somebody to love, White rabbit, Plastic fantastic lover

Soundtrack to the counterculture but a bit too incohesive for me to fully immerse myself in

Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are of course the highlights. Most songs in the album blend together in my head, but it's clear that there is real talent on display. Pretty far outside my wheelhouse, but I'm glad I listened.

Wonderful stuff - so much better than I expected. How have I gone 50 years without knowing this was there?
