BSSM by RHCP- I stopped listening halfway through, as the heat death of the universe occurred. This is one of those albums that I think are without any deep cuts, but I’m fine without actually listening to the entire thing to find out. _Breaking the Girl_ is my favorite on this album

I mean it was popular at the time. But mullets were popular at one time. so was blood letting with leaches. Just because it was popular doesn't mean it was good.

Menos mal que tiene "Give it away" y "Under the bridge".

I've never been a fan of RHCP. They are also the worst 'big' live act I've ever seen (Roskilde 2007 - boring and awful). I therefore expected to hate this, and increasingly did. At first I thought it was a bit more listenable than other efforts of theirs and the first few tracks at least had me tapping my toe. It quickly wore thin though. The longer I listened, the lower the score got. And it's a long album. Noone needs 17 tracks of this. 1.5/5. A special shout out to 'Give it Away', which may be the worst song ever recorded?

Aside from maybe 3 tracks this is bloated rubbish.

Sobre todo el sonido del bajo en este disco me resulta muy agradable, le un ritmito chido, muy bouncy, muy noventas, semi-pesado conservando el chill. Canción favorita del album: The Righteous & the wicked por el breakdown más o menos inesperado del min 2:31, pensé que regresaría al coro o algo así, pero fue una buena sorpresa. Mood: Horny swag.

Bangers'n'cheese. Too long really - trim off the second half of the album and you'd have a classic.

Not a huge fan of RHCP, but I've loved this album for about 20 years despite that. As close to a 5/5 as you can get with being 5/5

Highlights: Power of Equality, Breaking the Girl, Under The Bridge It's the breakout album that introduced the world to California punk-pop (for better or for worse). It's uniquely obnoxious and brightly endearing, and something that most other bands couldn't get away with, especially since the grunge sound had taken hold at the same time (BSSM was released on the same day as Nirvana's Nevermind). There's something for everyone here, not all tracks will hit equally, and certainly no one should feel bad if they don't enjoy them all.

“Blood Sugar Sex Magic” by Red Hot Chili Peppers (1991) Here is an album with a diverse range of styles, from white hip hop (which doesn’t quite rise to the level), to white funk, to hard rock, to metal. One thing can be said about Red Hot Chili Peppers: the instrumentals are consistently excellent—bass, drums, guitar are very well performed. Bass and guitar solos on “Naked in the Rain” are very good. I wish they had been extended. But the compositions are uneven. Rap lyrics seem amateurish (although “Give It Away” is better). Sex references, while ubiquitous, are exceedingly shallow, as if love making is a hobby. It seems to be in perpetual search of shock. When I was young, I was more interested in doing it than hearing about it. Mindless lust is overrated. Has its cool moments. The album, that is. 3/5

It remembers my teenage years so I have some good memories of all RHCP's career. However, this album is not so great that I remember, even with the last songs being great examples of all the RHCP power and dominance of their style. I'll give it 4 stars for it because of all, the memories, the sentiment, and the good songs.

Mi primera impresión es que se trata de un álbum súper enérgico. En general, me gusta mucho el sonido de los RHCP y acá, al pensar que esto es de 1991, sí pienso que de alguna manera proyectó (o influyó en) una vertiente del rock posterior. Las guitarras y la batería se lucen en varias canciones y pues la voz de Kiedis yo sí diría que es icónica. Además este es el álbum de dos canciones que me gustan mucho: "Give It Away" y "Under the Bridge". Fuera de los singles, creo que la que más me gustó fue "Apache Rose Peacock" y la que abre, "The Power of Equality" que es un curioso statement político de alguna forma y se diluye un poco para pasar a canciones más sensuales, medio eróticas. 8.5/10

Rap rock is okay for 2 songs, but an entire album is just not for me. Anthony’s voice is just not my cup of tea.

FINALLY AN ALBUM ABOUT SO CAL. This album is too long by half, but I still love some of the hits (Under the Bridge, etc). Weird Al's versions are better though. YOU HEARD IT HERE.

Great bass. Great guitar. RATM vibez at times. The guitar riffs really make the album though. Idk what pedals they're using but it's FUN.

Hace un tiempo meditaba a mis adentros... "¿Realmente todavía son relevantes los RHCP? ¿Hay quien honestamente siga pensando que son buenos?" La respuesta es irrelevante en este caso, lo que nos recuerda este disco es que, a pesar de tener bastantes topes y subidas y bajadas en su carrera, no se puede dudar que han sacado música tanto de altísima calidad como de muy importante relevancia. En un segundo disco que se lleva de calle al debut de Mother's Milk se escucha una banda mucho más melódica, con un funk más vivo empujado con un toque de punk. Las letras muchísimo más maduras en algunas canciones sin dejar bien claro que de primera instancia son una banda que tampoco se va a tomar tan en serio. Puede sonar medio cliché hablar bien de este disco pero creo que es el que mejor refleja esa magia inicial que creció a la banda. Ahora, lo que tampoco se puede negar es que creo, al menos la mitad de todo el crédito que puede tener este disco es de Rick Rubin, él es el verdadero genio detrás de todo esto y sin él estoy seguro que no hubieran llegado a ser todo lo que fueron/son. Al ver sobre 1991 caigo en cuenta que salió el mismo año que Nevermind y Ten, y aunque en su momento cualquiera hubiera dicho que los otros dos son mejores discos creo que el sonido de BSSM ha sobrevivido mucho mejor con el paso de los años como para ser introducido a alguien sin contexto, mucho más accesible que un grunge que quizá hoy en día no le habla tanto a los jóvenes. No llega al 5 solo porque en mi opinión todavía no es su mejor disco y todavía serán unos años y otra ausencia/regreso de Frusciante para que salga el que a mi parecer es el punto máximo de la banda.

I actually bought this CD back in the day in a conscious effort to be hip to newer music, but I quickly grew to hate it. I can appreciate some of the guitar but overall not a fan.

Classic Album!

I enjoy the RHCP, but I am not sure what they are doing on this list. I lost track of how many times the lyric "suck my dick" was sung.

Just a classic record for me.

Not a single miss. Rock, funk, energy, segues, chunky rhythm guitar, Flea turned up to 11, and classic raunch liberally sprinkled throughout. Could listen on repeat for at least 3 times straight. PS this is my go-to album for driving crosstown through Manhattan.

Este disco tiene el sello inconfundible de los RH: una combinación de Funk + Rock + Jazz + Hip Hop. Ya conocía algunas canciones de este disco, pero fue muy interesante escucharlo completo, de corrido y en orden, ya que se puede apreciar que las canciones fueron acomodadas a propósito en ese orden, como en una especie de disco progresivo. Este disco es pre-Californication y se nota; la música es un poco más "astringente" y jazzeada. Además, me parece que Californication evolucionó a partir del estilo de "Under the Bridge". El lado "negativo" del disco es que varias de las canciones son como muy parecidas llegando a hartar. Creo que hubieran podido quitar dos o tres de ellas y el disco hubiera funcionado mucho mejor. Esto casi hace que le de 3 estrellas, pero bueno, tiene Under the Bridge y pues... XD

It's overly long but the singles are masterpieces.

El funk siempre va a ser muy agradable, me gusta como le dan siempre una importancia sonora al bajo, algo muuuuy característico de los Red hot chiles muerdes sin dejar detrás a músicos tan grandes como Frusciante y Chad, No creo que sea su mejor disco y después del By the way ya nada es igual

Los RHCP me gustan más en su faceta más pop, con el Californication. Sin embargo este disco es muy bueno y aun sin tener esa producción lista para ser digerida en MTV es muy disfrutable y explica su salto a la fama. No puedo ver este disco sin acordarme del Macaco diciendo el nombre "completo" Red blood hot sugar chili sex peper magick.

Really enjoyed. Hadn't list to much Chilli Peppers before Californiacation but this was really good. Some songs weren't great and much preferred the slower ones than the funky ones.

To this album's credit, the instrumentation is diverse and interesting - each track has its own sonic identity and stands out from the rest. It's in the composition that this album fails to impress. Once a groove is locked in, it remains in neutral while Kiedis' questionable RATM-esque delivery is the only dynamic element of the song. Things get stale quickly, though there are still flashes of pop-inspired brilliance that would foment in greater quantities in later Peppers albums.

Not my favorite RHCP album. They’re clearly talented, but really hit their stride after californication.

Meh. Some catchy songs, but some annoying ones. His voice is kind of annoying too.

First 4 tracks are amazing. Unique guitar and bass. Pronounced bass. Great use of stereo and songs blend perfectly - seamless transition between track 1&2 Singles dont even come in till later this album rocks, surprisingly enough ive never listened it it its entirety.

Funky rock. Love RHCP and this is a classic! Some real highlights on this one and after reading Scar Tissue and understanding the issues behind the scenes, it's amazing that they made it and continued to make music.

An album that I've probably only previously listened to once or twice, but love several songs form it. All-timer.

I do love me some RHCP. Perhaps I'm a bit of a casual in regards to their music, as I enjoy their later stuff a bit more. Californication being the magnum opus for the band, however I do like the funk/punk mix of their earlier stuff as well. Nevertheless I can't help but groove along their music and for me that's a marker or something awesome.

SEX MAGIK

Intro to The Power of Equality goes hard, nice bassline too. Love the album, Under the Bridge is one of my favorite songs. Give It Away is a classic. Album is solid and fucking filled with sexual innuendos. I love RHCP but as a whole, the album didn't impress me as much as I thought it would, still solid though, 6/8.

Just boring, honestly. And drags for over an hour. The 1 is an overreaction, but I don't have one of those yet.

I feel like I would have really liked this album if I was around at the time just out of it's punk, alt-rock nature. There's some hip hop influence in this record that I attribute to Rick Rubin's production. Good album, although it starts to drag on with 17 tracks. Standout Tracks: Suck My Kiss, I Could Have Lied, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Sir Psycho Sexy
