This album has its moments especially in the second. The first half sounds strained and sophomoric. Sounds like they just want to be a white Parliament/Funkadelic, but the funky sounds just ridiculous and the screaming guitars lack the taste of when funkadelic showed that side. After Give it Away things get better and the band seems to find their voice but by then the mold is cast. 2.5 🌟

I had never listened to the whole album. I hadn't realized the extent of rock and jam that was combined.

Can't help think that it is no coincidence that I got Jane's Addiction instantly followed up with this RHCP album. They are very similar in their notoriety, musicality, and timelessness. Most Peppers albums do not feel like they are of their time, and this one is no exception. What a record. It's hard to believe they were able to ever come close to this one again, and they kind of routinely do reinvent themselves. Nothing beats them when the are at full strength with John Frusciante. There's definitely something missing without him. Crazy dude though. And Flea's bass lines are hopping on this thing. Anyway, This one has something for everyone, and while I'm not a devoted fan of this band, this album is something else, and deserves to be heard. It grows a little long in the tooth as it rolls on but the energy never stops.

Mostly good unclean fun. The surfer-slacker vibe is not real credible given how much they wanted to be — and succeeded in becoming — big stars. Repetitive AF with nearly every song having the same gronky and crunching guitars and greasy licks.

I forgot how much I listened to this in high school, I hadn't thought about these songs in a while but they came right back to me. I like the first half a lot, it gets hit or miss partway through. I think there are several songs that sound like b-sides and could have made way for a shorter, tighter album. I gravitate toward the funkier songs like "If You Have to Ask," "Funky Monks," "Blood Sugar Sex Magik," "Apache Rose Peacock." You can almost break the songs up into groups, there are a handful of more acoustic-based songs, chief of which for me is "Breaking the Girl," a really excellent song. There are some massive hits on this album, especially "Under the Bridge" which kind of lives on a stratosphere of its own. "Suck My Kiss" is great, "Give It Away" is great. I heard that story about Anthony Kiedis writing "Give It Away" after his girlfriend gave him a jacket of hers that he thought was cool back in high school, and it stuck with me. "Sir Psycho Sexy" is ridiculous but it's super funky, really memorable and musically it's a great listen. In summary, this is a really good album but the extra fat keeps it from being a 5 star album for me.

This came out when I was 11 years old and "Under The Bridge" was one of the first songs I ever had a deeper emotional reaction to. It showed me that music had a much wider range of expressive possibilities than I had previously thought. It likely had alot to do with the simple coincidence of my own emotional development at the time, but it will always be an important song for me for that reason. The rest of the album is, on the whole, a fun, all over the place, almost wreckless affair. In a way I love it for having those extremes contained within it. Sort of runs the gamut emotionally. A quintessential example of CD era bloat, but I can't fault them for the excitement they must have felt at this creative peak - with a great producer behind them who understood them and encouraged them to grow. It's also a great example of an album recorded in a house, where life and work temporarily converged into the same thing. I'm a huge fan of this method and tend to romanticize the records which are produced this way. Certainly not a perfect record by any means, but chock full of passion and some real stunners and jams throughout.

I think RHCP are fine, but honestly it was a time and a place in High School for me and this style of rock doesn't do much for me anymore. For 1991 though it's banging.

Fun album. I remember loving it when it came out as so many other great albums including Nevermind came out around the same month. Really nice depth and wide range of songs, the band were definitely at their peak when recording this and they have never captured that same energy for me as they did here. Some of the songs grate after 30 years but that is forgiven as the rest of the album is worth it

As always with the Chili Peppers, you've got to kiss a lot of frogs before you find the princes. The gems here are among the best they've ever done. My favorite track is a lesser known one, "I Could Have Lied". I loved it so much I used to play it during my on-air shift on college radio station 90.3 KRNU. The CD we had included an edited version of the song, which featured a guitar riff played during the line, "I fucked up now" to block the profanity. This still isn't my favorite Chili Pepper album (that honor may forever belong to "By The Way", although I tend to ride hard for "One Hot Minute" as well). A big part of me wants to push this to a 5, but there are just too many skips. A five doesn't ask you to kiss that many frogs.

I was looking forward to this one. "Under the Bridge" has always been a top favorite, and "Give it Away" has always been a solid jam. I loved about a third of the very long album. That third would get a five. But there’s that whole other hour there.

I dig the funk-rock sound of the Chili Peppers. I know that I have listened to this album, but it has been ages. I had fun with the first two-thirds or so of the album. I think that if the album would have ended at Track 12, it would have scored higher from me.

I'm pretty sure I've heard this whole album before but certainly not for a couple of decades. I didn't recognize more than a handful of the song titles and was familiar enough with the first couple of tracks. I love the full, bass-forward sound and the shouty singing that seems very 90s to me now. Oh, yeah, here's Breaking the Girl. That's nice and different. Then a bunch of songs. Then Give It Away, which is fantastic. Eventually Under the Bridge plays and that's ok, especially the key change and, surprisingly, the bridge. And then...there are like six more songs. None of which seem all that necessary. I was really ready for it to be over. Really ready.

It’s been a while since I’ve really listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I never listened to a complete album. I definitely appreciate them more now than I did then… they create incredible compositions in a wide variety of styles. The songs are interesting, include complex arrangements and unexpected instruments, and are a lot of fun to listen to! Really enjoyed this and glad to have found a new appreciation of this group that I had not appreciated as much as I feel I should have when this was new. This is an album I will be listening to again!

There's not much to fault on this well produced funky album which has great songs, excellent lead vocals and plenty of energy. Instrumentally, the group is on fire, creating some awesome grooves. I like that they experimented with sounds like backwards guitar on 'Give It Away', mellotron on 'Breaking The Girl, If You Have To Ask' and 'Sir Psycho Sexy' (also featuring marimba) plus Flea plays Trumpet on trumpet on 'Apache Rose Peacock'. They're not afraid to mellow the mood, like on 'I Could Have Lived' and of course there's familiar singles like 'Under The Bridge' and 'Suck My Kiss'. Unlike a lot of double albums, it doesn't feel like they beefed it up with filler. This was a really enjoyable and accessible album. A classic.

What classic. This was the peppers at the height of their powers before they went of and did calinfornibollox and all those terrible albums. It's weird, its funky its sex obsessed I fell for this album as a teenager and return to it periodically. Funky slap bass and cosmic groves.

Ein ganz und gar verzichtbares und nichtssagendes Album einer vollkommen überschätzten Band. Selbst die Gassenhauer sind schlecht gealtert und auch Under the Bridge taugt nur noch als Reminiszenz an den Anfang der 90er. Damals allerdings prägte der Sound das halbe Jahrzehnt. Man muss wohl dabei gewesen sein.

Not a gem, but close to

Such a push-pull for me and this band. I listened to this album a lot when it was first released, but quite a bit of their work kind of annoys me and I can never figure out why. After a short while, I just stopped listening to them.

That wasn't my jam. I finished it, but I need to be more or less stoned for it to be enjoyable. It's just so mellow as to be obnoxious, alas.

Ahh the Red Hot Chili Peppers. A band that is so hard for me to judge. Some songs of theirs I love and other times I'm just like fuck off.

The hits on the album are outstanding. “I Could Have Lied” is one of my favorite RHCP songs of all time. But, for all the songs that are truly epic, there are some real dog shit tunes. I feel that way about most Chili Pepper albums (minus By the Way, that’s amazing start to finish). A decent listen, but minus a few select songs which the radio has beaten to death, I probably won’t revisit

Terrible overrated band

the album has great music background; the lyrics are not what i am used to... but that is the choice of the performer.

i only realized a few months ago that rhcp were funk! and this album is pure funk and rap, and i sure loved it! some of the lyrics are, uhhh, well beyond suggestive, but somehow i don’t mind with all of the amazing guitar, bass, and drums. i mean, rhcp certainly embraced their desire for unrestrained lyrics. a lot surrounds sex, but the opening song, “the power of equality,” being what it is and containing some scathing comments, makes sure we know they’ve got more to say. this album, as a whole, is so solid. the slower songs on the album don’t mess with the flow. “under the bridge,” in fact, remains this album’s highlight. it’s beautiful and relatable, regardless of situation. the rest of the album has such amazing instrumentation—it’s steady throughout. special mention to my favorite lyric ever: hicks don’t mix with politics.

RHCP, to me, have always had such a unique, signature sound; there just isn't any mistaking them for anyone else, and this album cemented that sound for them. While some other bands do the "funk rock" sound, RHCP still stands out among them, and is probably the most known for this sound. Simultaneously, with this iconic album, the helped to usher in the 90s alternative craze, and would be solidified as powerhouses in that genre for the next two decades. This album has some of the band's greatest work on it -- the funkiest guitar riffs coupled with fun funky vocals, as well as memorable lyrics. True to the album name, I never realized just how many sexually suggestive lyrics danced throughout the songs on this album. Overall, it's just a fun, interesting, and catchy listen. Not every song is a hit single, but every song is fun to listen to and I wasn't tempted to skip anything -- a feat for an album clocking in at nearly 1 hour, 20 minutes. An album definitely worthy of this project!

To ne this is still the best RHCP Album. Those afterwards are still great in their own regard, but nothing beats blood sugar sex magic...

Cool funk album, very dirty

I've heard most of these songs a million times over again, but never sequentially in the album. It was a cool mix of classic Chili Pepper vibes and EXTREMELY funkyness that they lean in to from time to time. I personally enjoy Californiacation more, but that could be nostalgia talking.

Ah! Back when I was not embarrassed to admit I enjoyed RHCP. I could not get enough of this album when it first came out. The union of rock and funk was something my musical ear had apparently been craving. Flea, Frusciante and Smith (and arguably Rick Rubin) put together a masterpiece, that has easily endured the decades since. Smith's jazz drumming is relentlessly precise and uncharacteristically diverse for that era of popular music. Flea elevated the bass guitar to a main instrument and also brought explosive personality to the stage and to recordings. And yet, they together never compromised on remaining the tight-knit rhythm section. In and amongst all of that, Frusciante steers clear of the need for a rhythm guitar part at all by magically weaving a sonic fabric of riffs, solos and powerful chord explosions. What is on a bit shakier ground are Kiedis' contributions. While some of the sincere songs like 'I Could Have Lied' and 'Under the Bridge' are quite powerful, much of the lyrical content across the rest of the songs range from fractional thoughts, to gibberish, to outright celebrations of misogyny. I remember gleefully singing along to all of these songs, so this is definitely also a lot about my sensibilities changing over time, but it's sad how much it takes away from my fond memories of the album.

such an incredibly fun album. it’s funky, it’s silly, it’s camp! i love RHCP. this album has some of my all-time favorite RHCP songs, too (such as “Breaking the Girl” <3333) do i think this is the best RHCP album? no. but it’s still undeniably entertaining. can’t understand what Kiedis is saying? SO WHAT!! let yourself be immersed in his gibberish. if you don’t like this album, you’re probably a reaaaally boring person. you must be fun at parties…..

I am completely shocked right now. Leila, who is in my group, loves RHCP. I’ve always clowned on them. She made me listen to their music and I started at the beginning because I knew I liked their earlier stuff more. And it was great, I admit. Then… I reached this album. I hated it. I couldn’t even finish it. My complaints started and ended with Anthony. So damn annoying. That was only a few months ago. I’m not sure what changed but I actually enjoyed this album. 1: the production is awesome. I love it. 2: the instrumentals are (mostly) incredible. I already knew that going into it though. But now… the vocals. They are a lot more tolerable than I remember. It’s kind of…. camp. I learned that word from Leila. He’s still flat every once in a while but it’s not awful, nor is it frequent. I’ve always been a fan of his cartoonish rap style, though. So when there isn’t a melody, I’m diggin it. The LYRICS THOUGH OH MY LORD. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS DUDE TALKING ABOUT. Once again, though, I tried to tune it out and write it off as “camp”. I really think giving the album a fair shake helped me enjoy it so much more. Only cons: Lyrics, some pitchy points, a little bit bloated, under the bridge. I don’t care what any of you say. Under the Bridge is an awful song that should not exist.

Plenty of personal history with this album. Greased funk bassline grooves with Anthony's mercurial lyrical delivery comes together to make a really sonic statement. Power of Equality into If You Have You Have To Ask is smooth and sets the tone for the real groove flexibility the Chili Peppers display on the album. Breaking The Girl is a titan of a song. Suck My Kiss is another. The connective tissue on this record does the important work of creating the space for these monster hits. I Could Have Lied is a sleeper hit on the record. Give It Away punches us all in the face with how it takes over, with the most absolute insane soundscape. Followed immediately by Under The Bridge. Goddamn the hits literally cannot be stoped. The best part is there is this true thread that runs through all of these songs. They're Red Hot is a nice little bow on the end of the sprawling Mr Psycho Sexy. What a goddamn album.

This album just keeps giving and giving!

Might be the second time I've listened to this album since the mid-late 2000s. Did we honestly used to think that Anthony Kiedis could rap? His mouth just can't mouth it, it's really bizarre. The bass is just faultless. The drums can do little wrong. Overall though, this as an album is just that little bit too much of a wall of noise. Individually there are tracks that just fizz with energetic excitement. But considering it as a whole album, adds up to remind us that we can have too much of a good thing. It doesn't hang together as an album, taking us on a journey. It works just as well on random play, and that's sad. It should definitely be regarded as influential; back in the 90s, saying that you had a Chilli Peppers album was kind of like admitting that you breathed air or that the sun comes up in the morning. But that ubiquity seems to stem from their live performances. The Chillis were the gold standard of gigs - not that gigs appealed to me then or now - and I can't help but wonder if their scene presence - and indeed scene creation - is where their inclusion stems from. Album gets a 2 from me, it hasn't aged at all well.

Surprisingly varied! Best RHCP?

Base score: 5 stars. This was an excellently crafted and performed album that undoubtedly succeeded in its intentions. PERSONAL BIAS DEDUCTIONS: I do not enjoy the Chili Peppers' sound: –1 star The 73-minute runtime subjected me to the equivalent of two albums' worth of Chili Peppers content: –1 star I already hated the song "Suck My Kiss" and never wanted to hear it again: –1 star I already hated the song "Give It Away" and never wanted to hear it again: –1 star Oof, that's a shame. I really would have loved this album if everything about it was different.

Not a big fan of Red Hot Chili Pepper's jam and more funky sessions. I do think I prefer this album to their previous stuff where bass guitar is supposedly even more prevalent. Furthermore, I find most of Kiedis' lyrics pretty tedious. Yes we get you like to fuck. His more vulnerable lyrics as in Under the Bridge appeal more to me (even though it isn't a poetic sensation), but that song is also generally more melodic: which is also why I prefer some of their later stuff more (e.g. Californiacation, Dani California).

I have not listened to this album before, though I've listened to a lot of latter day RHCP. I see the core of what they'd become is there. It's not bad, but a lot of forgettable and repetitive tracks. They got much better as they aged.

Under the Bridge aside this album is the same song on repeat for over an hour. How this band became so successful is beyond me. I would have given it a 0/5 if possible.

So probably the most lyrical of all Chilli's LP's some great tracks here with clear and unambiguous messages throughout. Love "Under The Bridge" and "Give It Away". You can see the links, no doubt through Rick Rubin's influence, to Hip Hop within the mixes here. Not in my collection but a justifiable choice I think.

I remember this album from a particular time in my life. It has its moments. Breaking the Girl is still a great song, whilst the 2 big singles haven’t aged badly. The rest though isn’t great and it’s overly long too

I'm familiar with the Chili Peppers, and always liked them, more or less. Not enough to buy any of the albums, though, so I've never listened to this all the way through. About halfway through I'm willing to say this hasn't really aged that well. The actual music, especially the bass, is consistently fantastic. But the vocals, including the lyrics themselves, not so much. I was rather enjoying the groove on Mellowship Slinky in B Major, until the singing started. I can't help but enjoy Give It Away, silly as it is, and Under the Bridge will always be a great song. Otherwise this album is a mixed bag from great stuff (Breaking the Girl) to cringeworthy (the title track/Apache Rose Peacock/Sir Psycho Sexy). Also it goes on. for. ever. I guess I have grown out of RHP?

Quite good but I still prefer Californication better. I much more like the more regular rock or funk rock tracks than the rap rock ones which I feel is a bit dated as a genre nowadays (at least for me).

Did not age well. Some killer songs but the overall start-to-finish album doesn't hold up.

I try to keep open and have heard new and different music I’ve enjoyed..but this is just noisy garbage not worth the time of day…but to each his own

I don’t really like it. The guitar and the bits of rapping sound amazing ,but I don’t enjoy listening to it.

This really brought back some college memories... I remember I couldn't believe how good this album was back then. Still pretty solid but there are a couple of duds that I was blind to back then. Even so, I gotta say that the hits really outshine the duds. Could see it being annoying if you're not already into this kind of music but luckily for me, I am.

I tried listening with an open mind but they have created something monstrous here. Some of the ugliest music ever.

Listened across the weekend including on the drive back from whistler after skiing! Really grew on me as I listened. They're a great band, frusciante is a genius, drums are great, slick wear coast rock with a dash of hip hop.

A good, solid album with a number of highlights and not a great deal of filler. It would benefit from being tighter and shorter though.

I see the appeal, but became bland for me after a couple of tracks. Didn't age that well overall. Fav tracks: The Power of Equality, Under the Bridge

Enjoyable but as I often feel with RHCP, becomes tedious. Some songs were hits for me and others misses.

Give It Away and Under the Bridge are 2 of my favorite RHCP songs. Great album all the way through.

Rolling Stone has Flea as the 22nd greatest bassist of all time. That seems criminal to me. This album has one of my favorite RHCP songs ever (Under the Bridge) and least favorite (Suck My Kiss). But I do enjoy this album as a whole, love the funk/punk vibe of it.

Funk turned up to 11. Obviously there are the great classics like "Suck My Kiss", "Give It Away", "Under the Bridge", and the self titled "Blood Sugar Sex Magik". I didn't know how many tracks this album had, but there are a number of others I will revisit. Hard to put this up against Stadium Arcadium, which is a solid listen all the way through. Best track: Under the Bridge / Give It Away (depending on your mood)

Slightly exhausting album. Very Red Hot Chili Peppers. Several hits one has known for a long time.

Despite my growing antipathy towards RHCP, I actually quite enjoyed that album.

Two cracking singles and plus Breaking The Girl and the title track save a bland melange of funk rock rap. Fop? I think I'm saying the bad Fop outnumbers the good Fop 2 to 1, but the good Fop is twice as good as the bad Fop. Middle marks.

Prototypical RHCP album. A few amazing classics and lots of ok filler.

For a while, and because of this album, and around the years following its release, the Peppers were probably the "biggest band in the world". I recall recording the album to a cassette. Several months later, when I realised I'm listening to that cassette every day (and despite investing in quality TDK cassettes, these things don't last) I gave up and bought the CD.

Can only handle RHCP in small doses

I know I don't like RHCP but I listened to a few songs anyway. This is just bad.

Not entirely as awful as I thought it would be, but a pretty painful funk.

When I was 15 I loved this album. Bought the guitar TAB book and learned every single note that John Frusciante plays on this album. As a guitar teacher I still teach the odd song from it (particularly fond of the solos on I Could Have Lied, and Mellowship Slinky...). I thought I'd kinda outgrown the album and band but when it came up as today's album I listened again, and loved every last bit of it, cringe-inducing lyrics and all. NOBODY played their instruments like this back in the 90's. Peak RHCP brilliance.

It was a good album. I have heard this album before and still enjoy it. There are two mega hits on it.

I was going back and forth between giving this 3 and 4 stars, but I ended up giving it 4 because that's what I did with Jeff Buckley and I think I enjoyed the two albums about the same. I honestly enjoyed BSSM more than I thought I would, seeing as my main exposure to RHCP was Californication and I only liked some of the songs off it. There were definitely some better parts (the beginning especially had crisp transitions and was absolutely solid) and some parts that seemed to drag a little (the songs between Under The Bridge and Sir Psycho Sexy are very forgettable), but ultimately I like it a lot just because of the sexy distorted slap bass that made you say umph (looking at you minute 1:58 of Power of Equality). Favorites: If you have to ask, under the bridge, I could have lied Least favorites: Apache rose peacock, suck my kiss Other notes - Crisp production overall - Funky Monks is a jam and the "crudeness" of the bass/guitar at the beginning reminds me of The Violent Femmes - Under the Bridge is objectively really good - Sir Psycho Sexy is kinda weird but I like the atmosphere it creates - wtf is up with some of the names on this album (and the album itself) - Breaking the girl sounds like that one Christmas song We Three Kings lmao

Favorites: Under the Bridge, Naked in the Rain You guys aren't gonna like me for this one. I really didn't care for this album. I'm not a huge chilis fan to begin with, and what I do like is more of the laid back, surfing tunes (Californiacation). I thought a lot of these songs were hard to follow. That being said, there were a few songs I enjoyed and you can definitely still hear the chili's distinctive funk in most of the songs. I understand that this is a very important album, but I personally don't care for it. Upon a second listen, I did enjoy a few more of the songs in this album, but it still just didnt connect with me

I never had listened to this album all the way through before, it's certainly a lot funkier than the ones I have listened to (which makes sense cause like half the songs have the word funk in them). It's a fun album to listen to though, prefer the not funky songs like "I could have lied" and "under the bridge".

Deeply embedded in the college experience of the early 90s, the music jams pretty hard but I can't fully get past the juxtaposition of the extra dirty silliness with the super self-important kinda dumb pontificating.

Will Ferrell is such a talented drummer. Not the best actor really. Not the worst mind. He’s not Alec Baldwin running round the set shooting people kind of bad.

Erm...Under The Bridge is good. Never liked this socks on cocks version of RHCP. Imagine Steve Bruce scoring 19 goals in the season when this was released. What a superstar.

I expected to enjoy this more than I did. Maybe it's my frame of mind at this moment, or maybe it just doesn't quite stand up as the classic I anticipated.

This alternative & funk rock album is the Red Hot Chili Peppers' fifth, and launched the band into worldwide fame. The album achieved a platinum certification in just under a year and is now certified seven times platinum. Fans & critics appreciated the band having less emphasis on the heavy metal style, because it allowed the other musical elements - as well as the lyrics - to shine. "Give It Away" & "Under The Bridge" were the most popular songs on the album. I really enjoyed listening to this earlier work from the RHCP band.

I mean there are some classics on this, and very nostalgic, but by the end I felt like it was all a bit repetitive funk!

Here we go again. More slappin' the bass and quickly saying 'hoot, hee, hat, badababa heet har' then doing some slow singing then slappin' the bass again. Guess it's okay though.

It is certainty way better than any of there (more successful) albums that followed. But I find the horror of the albums that followed (and much of the garbage that precedes this) can taint the memory of perfectly listenable funk-rock album. "mellowship Slinky in B Major" or "suck my kiss" are probably the best examples of the agreeable funky nonsense on offer.

There’s some classic RHCP tunes on this one. The record starts off great with the power of equality down to suck my kiss supply the energy with the whole band in their prime funky state.

Epic tracks on this bit feel a bit basic and samey compared to their more recent work. Still a banger but not a 5.

A wonderful album from start to finish. I loved the Peppers before this but this album totally reinvented them as a band, showed just how good they could be as songwriters and be taken seriously rather than a throwaway party band. No question that working with Rick Rubin and stripping back their sound worked wonders and Frusciante getting the chance to not just replicate Hillel Slovaks sound. Absolutely wonderful from start to finish ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Brilliant, not as refined or mature as the classic late 90s/2000s albums, but a good fun mix of early Chilis progressing to the Californication sound. I still love this, even if it a bit too long. 5 star album.

So fun—even though I was a teen when this came out, I didn’t remember all these tracks on one album. The Chili Peppers have fun and you can tell.

Okay, I've liked some pieces, but less than a half :/

3.3 + Back during the Napster days, I downloaded like 3 tracks off this album and didn’t bother to listen to the rest until I found the CD a few years later in some cut-up bin. It’s overlong like so many albums of this peak CD era. The interplay between Frusciante and Flea is exceptional but Kiedis often tanks the sound with his pseudo-intellectual musings and psycho-sexual babble (“Yama daba girl from Alabama…”). To give credit where it’s due, “Under the Bridge”, “Breaking the Girl” have remained among my favorite songs of the 1990s - they are both cinematic and build to dramatic crescendos. “Give it Away” is funky AF. Those would’ve been the songs in my original mp3 stash and 25 years later I stick by that assessment.

This defined so much of that era. The hits still hit as hard as day one. I hadn’t listened to this all the way through in a long while but it still fantastic.

What a wildly inconsistent album. The first two songs made me want to rate it as a rare 1 star. Seriously, that frat boy rock rapping is so lame. It was a wild rollercoaster ride of garbage and gems. I was almost ready to start to look past the first two tracks until I heard the title track. Ruined. I’d give it a 2.5 if I could, but I can’t. So 2. The thing is, this could have been a 4 star album if they had only cut it down to 40 minutes.

Love under the bridge, some of their other stuff I couldn't really get into. It was my first time listening to a full album. I would say it is too long, despite the reasonable range of songs on there. Despite the occasional excellence, a lot of the funk stuff didn't do it for me, as well executed as it was.

I would say this is RHCP's fourth best album, after Californication, Stadium Arcadium and By The Way. These three records are all easily 5 stars, as I can honestly say not a single one contains a bad or mediocre track. This might be due to nostalgia, as I discovered the Peppers when I first got into music and tried to develop my own taste instead of listening to what my parents liked, but I can't help but adore them. Blood Sugar Sex Magik contains some of the best tracks RHCP ever created, such as the amazingly catchy and energetic Give It Away Now, the emotional and epic Under The Bridge, and the classic guitar riffs on My Lovely Man, but there are a handful of tracks I am not in love with. Examples of tracks I have lukewarm feelings towards are The Power of Equality due to Kiedis' vocal performance, the sleep-inducing I Could Have Lied, and the creepy/weird vocal effects on Mellowship. Besides that, it is a solid 4/5.

RHCP is not my favorite, but they are consistent and they can be a lot of fun. I'm not a big fan of some of the vocal choices that Anthony Kiedis makes, but I can't deny the talent of the rhythm section of Flea and Chad Smith or the amazing guitar playing of John Frusciante. This album has some amazing songs, but I still prefer Californication to this.

Under the Bridge is a nice tune but the rapping/singing style makes me want to bang my head against a wall to make it stop. Its just not good. Or of any merit. 1/5

The Power of Equality - SWING! - "Power of the equality" banger - if you have to ask - loving that guitar and the scream at the beginning - definitely an inspiration for fun loving criminals - "(If you have to ask) You'll never know Funky motherfuckers will not be told to go" worthy applause at the end Breaking the Girl - a sad love song - love the backing vocals Funky Monks - what is not to love and love how it is keidis doing his own "backing"/"repeating" vocals .... Dancin' down your avenue love the outro Suck My Kiss - oh yeah! - Suck my kiss, cut me my share just a banger of a song I Could Have Lied - complete change of direction, love it - stink face of a song can't believe i never heard this before "She struck me but I'm fucked up now" Mellowship Slinky in B Major - love the music and the lyrics are peak keidis "Good God, take me away now" The Righteous & the Wicked - i love the subtle background noises they left in like the whispering 1,2,3,4 at the begginning here finally some more fruiscante vocals i love their two voices together "Marvin Gaye my love, where did we go wrong?" Give It Away - not much to say on this, it is amazing and obviously one of their better known song "You do a little dance and then you drink a little water" love the "backwards" guitar sound/effect and keidis "flicking" when he says give it away in the chorus "I can't tell if I'm a kingpin or a pauper" Blood Sugar Sex Magik - can't believe i never heard this one either "Every woman has a piece of Aphrodite Copulate to create a state of sexual light Kissing her virginity, my affinity I mingle with the gods, I mingle with divinity" Under the Bridge - i love this song i have heard this so many times, album version, live, covers etc and I love every one but the best is keidis and fruiscante on a boat in the netherlands or somewhere playing this which is poetic considering the history and the future of their lives "Well, I never worry, now that is a lie" next 6 tracks except sir physcho would have been dropped if this album came out later, good songs but do dilute the album for me Naked in the Rain - good song one of the ones i like less but that could be 12 track in fatigue but shows the strength of the album Apache Rose Peacock "Said that girl who left me silly She liked the looks of me and my willy" The Greeting Song - even keidis doesn't like this one, but it is grand My Lovely Man - meh Sir Psycho Sexy - love it "Deep inside the garden of Eden Standing there with my hard on bleedin' There's a devil in my dick and some demons in my semen Good God no, that would be treason" They’re Red Hot - was not expecting that 4 - enjoyed it, will listen again. 5 - absolute belter so based on this has to be a 5

Straight up 5 stars especially coming from Mother’s Milk and their earlier stuff which was just pure chaos. This album was the true foundation for their super stardom and their future sound. Chad Smith is EXCELLENT in this album as is John Frusciante who is 20/21 recording this which is insane. Have a lot of these tracks on my main Spotify playlist. I also read that Flea didn’t use any slap bass in this album as he said too many people were copying his style at the time which is utter bollox because Naked in the Rain is all slap as is the outro of Power of Equality. Highly recommend watching Funky Monks which covers the making of this and the behind the scenes of them hanging out in an LA mansion and recording the whole album there with Rick Rubin.

Not the biggest fan of RHCP but a great album nonetheless

So there are many phenomenal songs here, but for me there are certainly a few fillers in there too. Songs like "Power of equality", "Mellowship slinky..." & "Naked in the rain" are good, just don't think they stand up on their own. These "fillers" just sound like generic chili's to me, and maybe it's unfair to compare them to the other masterpieces on the album, and maybe I'm unfairly comparing the album to other chili records that are undoubtedly 5-star (Californication, by the way) but I'm rating it as great, not perfect.

I used to listen to their singles all the time in middle school and I was never able to label what their music exactly was until now. It is now what I consider one of the best blends of funk and rock out there, with songs like "If you have to ask" sounding like it came out a Sly album. This is RHCP at their freshest. They finally found their sound, and it only took 5 albums. Their later albums would build off this formula. But this isn't as poppy as their later albums. There is so much youthfulness and energy in this album that would make funk proud to see where it went in the 90s. When listening to this album, there are two sides at conflict. There's the punkish energetic songs, and there are the softer relaxing songs that come to define their more popular songs. Then there are the songs that combine both. My favorite songs on the album are pretty much the singles I grew up with, especially "Breaking the Girl". Everything was the instrumentals to the lyrics to the back vocals to the solo are perfect.

This cd is long and I can see why my mother banned it from the car. Two songs made me laugh out loud literally, some obvious classics from my youth, and a lot of songs I’ll never listen to again. Not my fave but I feel compelled to respect this ridiculous band because of my childhood. But not TOO much respect.

I've literally wore the 1's and 0's off my cd from listening so many times.

Starts funky/ska style. Hits it stride in the middle. “I could have lied” helps the album progress through to their hits. Enjoyable. Longer album that covers several sub genres throughout. EDIT: After completing this list. RHCP was my fist album so I expected this list to be filled with way more albums that I’d like more than this one. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. This was one of the better alt rock albums on the list in general and deserves an update. 8.3/10

The high water mark for RHCP. The single's from this are all good to great. Some decent deep cuts, but a lot of this album sounds dated now, and dropping the last 6 songs would have resulted in a tighter, better record. Highlights: Breaking the Girl, Suck My Kiss, Give It Away, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Under the Bridge

The best Rhcp album but I don’t vibe with 100% of the tracks

Really in yo face with some bangers sprinkled in

1 or 2 good songs. Red Hot Chili Peppers are overrated in my opinion.

Really not my cup of tea at all. I just can’t get into the Peppers. Can see why people do like it, but just ain’t for me.

Man this album sucks. It feels like something a chubby middle school kid would listen to before he puts on a fedora and goes to the school dance, where he just stands in the corner judging the kids who are having fun. Under the Bridge slaps, but the rest of this album is terrible.

Not my favorite Chili Peppers album, but a classic.

Fantastic singles, shitty album

There are elements on this album, like Flea's bass work, that I liked on many of the tracks, and some tracks that I liked in general. If I had to listen to the album in it's entirety, the lyrics on tracks like "Suck My Kiss" sink this album from a 3. Maybe it's Anthony Kiedis specifically that I don't like, but I've heard enough from the Chili Pepers.

Funky, fresh, but also super long, could have been edited down tighter. I like this more than most later Chili Peppers albums because it displays a sense of fun that disappeared over the decade.

Kiedis' white boy rap only gets more cringey as the years go on, and his out of tune singing is insufferable - only thing the man can half-way do is call and response blues hollers. Way too much rhythm and way too little actual musical ideas going on here overall. Though there are some stand out tracks, but the rest of it is so tedious the stand outs are drowned out. Aged real badly/10

This album is a little too long in my opinion. But otherwise very good. I'm glad I'm revisiting it after all these years.

Massively surprised by this one. I've heard a lot of RHCP when I was a kid because my brother loved them. Since then I've sort of discarded them because I found the singer's voice annoying on their best known songs like Californication. But this album is actual fire. Loving the funky guitars and the mix of playful and technical details. With this less pop-oriented style the singer's voice fits way better too.

Mostly enjoyable, I like the style of music, although the album is way too long... They really could have cut it down to half the length. The production irritated me for some reason: the audio quality seems poor and I don't like the mix. Some of the lyrics are a bit much too, sir pyscho sexy was the worst example of this

Tons of HS nostalgia in this album. Will always remember the time I met Anthony Kiedes at a campground in West Michigan while he was visiting his grandpa.

Very good

I am not a huge fan of theirs, but this holds up. There is some idiocy on the album, like Suck My Kiss, and the big thumbsucker that is Under the Bridge, but John Frusciante's sunshine bright tones cut through the funky sludge, creating a style that has earned its popularity.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but this album was diverse in style and still unifying in sound. I enjoyed a couple of the songs and already knew a couple

Oh god, it's so lame. Just four white dudes doing "funk" and occasionally there's a good song in there. Clocking in at 70 minutes, this album way overstays it's welcome. I want to listen to anything else. Closer to 1.5 to gets a 1 for punishment's sake.

OK. Under the Bridge is a great song. Preferred that style to the rest.

This album is very nostalgic for me. So, I may have a bias here. I think this album is all over the place in a wonderful way. There isn't a cohesive story or even sound. It makes each new song refreshing compared to the previous. The messages and themes in the song are always worth looking at the lyrics for.

Geen Peppers fan, maar dit is toch wel echt een tof album.

Allereerste keer dat ik deze klassieker voor het eerst helemaal heb beluisterd. Hoewel ik de stem van Kiedis maar moeilijk blijf trekken, vind ik dit album grote klasse. En je hoort (wanneer niet) de hand van de grote John F.

Stilzitten is onmogelijk bij deze plaat! Wat funken en grooven de mannen Frusciante, Flea en Smith toch de pan uit. Qua muziek 5 dikke sterren, maar Kiedis zijn rap-zang is niet altijd even hip-en-happening (hoewel op deze plaat nog het best te pruimen van alle Peppers platen).

Als het kon, gaf ik dit album zes sterren. Een van m’n favorieten.

I had this album back in the day. I haven't listened to it in years. It's really pretty good. A bit long, but some really good songs.
