I'm a sucker for a good cover album and this is a very good cover album. I also love the story behind this. Record label was like, "You can't cover these songs! You're the king of outlaw country!" And then Willie is like, "Screw you, I'm Willie Nelson. Here's a bunch of covers. Deal." Album goes quintuple platinum. Moral of the story? Willie does what Willie wants.

probably one of the best country albums i've heard, still country though

Was sure i wouldn't know any of the songs. Knew almost all what the hell

Willie's voice and gentle approach to these classics give them a decent twist. Overall the album is a little too laid back and one note to warrant a re-listen.

There's nothing really bad you can say about this album. Beautiful, classic standards sung in the silky smooth country crooner tones of Willie Nelson. Not really my favorite type of music, but can definitely appreciate it. 3 stars.

Never listened to Willie before, but he has SO MANY ALBUMS. I was expecting more of a country vibe not going to lie, and I was pleasantly surprised by how slow and somber it was.

A very light and lovely album. It’s clear he approached this with a lot of love and care. That said I don’t know that I’ll listen to it much more. There were some songs that really hit me, but the rest didn’t.

Can't argue with this

I was surprised that an album of covers was my first recommendation for Willie Nelson. This was the first album I had to read about after listening to it. (This was the 193rd album that I've reviewed from the 1001 albums generator".) I had previously heard two or three tracks from this album. The album sounds like a Willie Nelson album. "Stardust" and "Blue Skies'' were my favorite tracks. I don't ever like "Unchained Melody" no matter who sings it. There are tracks I like, but the album as a whole gets 3 stars.

Willie displays his characteristic crooning and soft, easy listening music in this album of both originals and standbys. It is a perfectly enjoyable and succinct experience that highlights his style and why he is so revered across genres.

Willie has a soft voice. Almost too soft sometimes, like he’s singing karaoke. This album has a honky tonk feel mixed with an upbeat romance vibe. Almost like something you would hear being played in a cafe. Fav song: Moonlight in Vermont

Love me some cover songs! Like Willie, usually hit or miss for me on his stuff. Some I love, some just ok.

Country music isn't really my thing, but compared to some albums I've listened to recently, this was alright.

Some good tracks on here. Stardust is nice. Overall very simple acoustic tracks, but the sentimentality borders at times into extreme kitsch.

Det är precis den känslan jag får under min lyssning denna morgon, detta är något jag skulle kunna sätta på under en middag exempelvis, då det primära fokuset ligger på att föra ett samtal men Willie Nelson ligger i bakgrunden och skapar stämningen i rummet. Odd for most listened to track of album 5/10 all of me - hints of nelson, meh? 5/10 unchained melody - when the guitar stops, the song pops. sucker for harmonica again. crescendo! 8.5/10 september song - grand piano and easily +1, still not stretching vocals? heartfelt saves it 7/10 on the sunny side of the street - ...why? never heard a distorted harmonica before, I now know why. 2/10 moonlight in vermont - reverb is great idea, harmonica solo is a little cliche but probs not for it's time, 8/10 dont get around much anymore - keychange is nice, 6/10 someone to watch over me - overall thoughts timeless? outlaw country has grown up and needs lounge music. wiki says the recording was stripped back / minimal. Would love modern minimal re-production. some standouts. odd this album over red headed stranger

What a boring album. If you had asked me about Willie Nelson, all I knew would have been about his persona as a chilled, weed-smoking grandpa. So I was hoping for maybe some interesting psychedelic country, but this is just smaltzy overproduced cover version. This kind if shit is why people say they hate country

Ron Swansons favourite artist, automatic 5 stars. Seriously though, couple songs in and really liking the vibe. Could imagine listening to this on a long late night drive and just chilling. How relaxing is this album man. Not too long either, a nice in and out experience. I can really see myself listening again to fit a calm mood.

Not the best vocalist, but atmospheric versions of standards

I mean, what's not to like about Willie doing standards from the American Songbook? Sweet stuff, nothing mind blowing but good renderings of the classics.

Quite pleasant to have on in the background

I'm honestly not sure of the significance of this album for it to be included in this list, all of the songs are covers of much older songs written mostly pre-1950, which I guess is why the album feels much older than 1978. I don't know much about Willie Nelson (although I have heard of him) so maybe he is the reason it's on this list more than the album itself? I do find that this kind of music can be quite a comfort to me though. There's something about the predictability of the chord progressions in these older songs that makes me feel safe, and it's nice to just have on in the background. It's nice enough but I don't think it's essential listening.

Really nice album - did make me feel very single though. Feel like it is the kind of music you sway around the kitchen with your childhood sweetheart too. I just washed up on my own :')

Very Good Album!

This album is very slow. I usually like slow songs, but most of these were a miss for me. Highlights were Stardust, the title track, the cover of Unchained Melody and Someone To Watch Over Me.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Title track is the standout for me, great guitar playing, great vocal and great vibe.

This is so good. Never heard before and I shall be keeping it close to hand from now on. Would rather give it 4.5 but 4 it is.

Wow! I totally never listened to Willie Nelson AT ALL, and in my head he was mostly a country signer. BUT this album is EXCELLENT. Wow!

A great classic!

Maybe I just don’t like country music as much as I aspire to. This lost me some of the way through. Odd moments of transcendence and beauty for sure, but mostly faded into the background because I’m incapable of enjoying listening to old craggy men tell gorgeous tales in cracked voices over their melancholy guitars.

Big music done charmingly small, which suits Nelson's down-to-earth vocals. It's just as easy to not hear the delicate strings, bells, harmonica and various other percussion. Not because they're not strong or good enough, but because like most natural things you take them for granted first before becoming fully conscious of their beauty and complexity.

0/10 trash one of the lylis are that "every thing will be allright only iof you believee the gyspy" this is untrue and wrong worst album ever last track do be pog but otherwise an ok album nothing amazing not much shit so uhhh 2/10 but because of last track uhh i give it a 5/10

i agree with both louis, just some calm music that does the country thing pretty tastefully. nothing really stood out to me though and again it's not rly my thing, though i do appreciate it

i typically consider country to be a kind of blighted hell-genre, but this is really, really nice. this record is just really tasteful, strikingly so. it's soulful, mournful, romantic, almost jazzy at times and does it all with an air of effortlessness. the instrumentation is also lovely, the gentle keys, organ and strings sitting in the background, the harmonica and guitar playing - its all just very pleasant. this is the kind of album i'd love to listen to on a long drive at home during the evening favourite songs are: on the sunny side of the road, georgia on my mind, someone to watch over me

Calming, nothing remarkable though

Malgré un bandana des plus ridicules et une inspiration musicale limitée puisque Willie s'est en effet contenté de pomper ses camarades de classes plus brillants que lui, force est de constater que cet album est extremement agréable à écouter. Je n'enlève pas le point bandana a 80 ans car il ne figure pas sur la pochette, ça passe pour cette fois.

Wow, what a fantastic album. This is up there with American IV for me as one of the greatest cover albums of all time. Willie really brings a unique take on these classic songs. Incredible.

I've never really felt that I understood Willie Nelson or his appeal all that much. This album feels like background music to me. The parts I like the most ("Georgia On My Mind"; "On the Sunny Side of the Street") sound like riffs on artists I prefer (Sunny Side sounds like a Randy Newman composition, but with none of Neman's charisma). All in all, the album just feels a bit dull to me, although I'm sure there is something in it that I am just not connecting with.

i like how understated it is, the vocal performance is really emotive without ever getting cheesy or too sentimental. his voice is rough in some spots but it doesn't really detract. pretty nice production too. moonlight in vermont🥺🥺. giving it a 5, i don't think I'd change anything about it.

3.1 - Just a quick aside to consider this album within the context of Willie’s career: This was his 22nd studio album, by this point he’d been recording for 22 years, he was 45 years old at the time of its release, and now in 2021 he’s 87 years old. I say all this because recording an album of pop standards is a move artists often make in the twilight of their careers. In the case of Willie Nelson, was this album a stopgap to appease his record company, and to give himself just a little respite from the grind of writing and touring? The album is fine. His voice sounds sweet and clear as ever. The arrangements do justice to the original recordings while accentuating Willie’s strengths. It’s obviously more than a little boring. It’s an album you put on when your grandparents are visiting. It also makes me mourn the musical wasteland of 1978 if this is an example of some of the strongest output for that year.

Willie Nelson hatte ich anders in Erinnerung, und wenn Country, dann auch gern Country. Schöne Songs sind das auf dem Album, aber seit der Neu-Interpretation von damals sind irgendwie auch 50 Jahre und ungezählte weitere Neu-Interpretationen dieses beliebten Straußes bunter Melodien vergangen. Ist ganz nett, reißt mich aber auch überhaupt nicht vom Hocker. 2,4 oder 2,6 - das ist hier die Frage.

Los sencillos «Blue Skies» y «All of Me» llegaron respectivamente a los puestos uno y tres en la lista Hot Country Singles de Billboard. De los mejores albunes country

Not as bad as I thought but not very good. It was interesting hearing Willie Nelson cover songs I’m familiar with but his voice is so bad that I feel like I should just listen to other versions of those songs.

The whole album is Willie doing a cover of his favorite songs. Excellent country voice. 8/10.

Great album, super chill, less country than I imagined. Blue skies, Georgia on my mind and unchained melody all great songs. Unchained melody is one of the best songs ever written, Willy Nelson's cover is really simple and not distracting.

No tenía ni idea de la existencia de este disco. Creo que es un excelente disco de Willie Nelson, muy muy interesante ver este justo cerca del disco de covers de Ray Charles, en este caso cual si fuera un espejo con canciones que sí conozco en arreglos a country. Sus arreglos muy correctos, la producción muy limpia, las versiones son buenas y el muy en su papel de siempre; y ese creo es el problema por el que no le doy mas puntos; Willie Nelson tiene una forma particular de cantar que no tengo otra manera de llamare mas que "plana," suba o baje la nota el tempo o la emoción todo lo canta con el mismo énfasis (o falta de más bien) y aunque esto funciona muy bien en su estilo de country outlaw en estas canciones, a pesar de las flores que les acabo de echar, siento se queda corto; Unchained Melody en particular se siente opaquísima y plana y al compararla con la original se oye muy apagada. Esto se repite con digamos 2/3 de las canciones. A pesar de como dije ser un disco con muy buenos arreglos y no sentir que se le puede achacar que la manera de cantar sea incorrecta (porque siempre ha sido su estilo) en la combinación con estas canciones hay algo que no me termina de cuajar.

Casi podría decir que me decepcionó el disco porque cuando leí que era de Willie Nelson covereando American Standards me imaginé una mejor selección o al menos arreglos más interesantes. Sí, Georgia On My Mind suena bien, pero el resto la verdad pasan sin pena ni gloria.

Not my bag. This is basically easy-listening for old stoners. Musically, it is one step above the music-man playing covers on an all-in-one Yamaha keyboard in your local mall. Production is high (pun intended), with backing strings and horns and the annoying harmonica guy leaning against the back wall. There are many covers on the album, the title track is a cover.. lame.

Especially calming, this list is already off to a great start.
