I probably would have enjoyed this more if Willie Nelson’s singing and musical arrangements didn’t for some reason didn’t remind me of Kermit the Frog and the Muppet Show

Some good songs. I just find it hard to like old school country which is what I classify this as.

I know this is Willie. He's the Living God of Country. So I won't dis him at all. This is just too soft and easy feeling for me. Maybe when I'm 80 years old? Nah, I'll still be reaching for Captain Beefheart then too. 2 stars because he's Willie tho.

First album that felt like a drag to get through. Not unbearable, not interesting

I really appreciate that this record was kind of groundbreaking. Having a major country star do a crossover record of all cover songs was a novel thing at the time, and it led to more instances like Johnny Cash and someone else major i cant remember in the 90s. Obviously there is nothing groundbreaking or innovative about this record, and it's not a good example of Willie Nelson. I do like his version of Georgia on my Mind though.

never heard this, not sure how its going to go... *few songs later* realise i know all these songs from the muppet show! It's a perfectly 'fine' covers album, but wouldn't listen to it again. It's gentle safe music for coffee shops and xmas movies.

The songs are beautifully produced. Nelson has chosen some classic songs to cover. The music isn't to.my taste however and I find his voice pretty weak in terms of performance when compared to modern standards. That, coupled with the unoriginal songs covered brings the score down for me.

Not a big fan of Willie Nelson and these songs are much more competently performed by others in my opinion. I had this record at one point and ended up getting rid of it. There’s just nothing special or particularly entertaining about this album, specifically when stacking the standards up against Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, or contemporaries like Bublé or Connick,Jr. Two stars.

This sounds like stuff grandma and grandpa would love. His voice has an interesting quality, its not a really powerful voice but like a friend singing at a wedding reception. It is charming in a way. Overall it was just okay. I would much rather stick to some of the classic jazz singers

So forgettable: legit don't remember this album at all. All I can think of is it being not the worst country out there but still being of the dull side of music. Decent album cover, looks a bit like an aged painting with the grain to it and the stars are quite nice. Nothing to say other than that.

Stardust - I love this song (definerly not because samara joy covered it) The rhythm guitar is really pretty but the way he solos kinda puts me to sleep the synth strings in the background kind of annoys me His voice is beautiful Georgia - the harmonica is so impressive and reminds me of a western movie It still puts me to sleep a lil bit tho Blue skies - i liked the beginning a lot but didn’t like how it ended All of me - the harmonica is the only part of this one i like Unchained melody - song sucks I really didn’t love this album even though it was jazz. I thought he has a really pretty voice and the harmonica was insane, but I don’t feel like he added that much to the classic songs. I liked the slower ones more. My favorite song was september in the rain.

Not really my thing

Boring!

I don't claim to know Willie Nelson's entire discography, but this has to be among his most boring. I can appreciate how this collection of pop standards cemented his unique voice and appealed to a mass audience, but boy does it sound vapid. None of these versions comes close to being a definitive version. Would much rather listen to his original material.

Very disappointing. All I knew about Willie was his love for the green so I was expecting some decent country but nope. So dull. Tracks 2 and 3 the only ones I could possibly listen to again. The rest deserve to get in the bin. 1.5*

I'm not the biggest Willie Nelson fan and considering this is apparently a cover album maybe it isn't the best album to try and turn me around on ole Willie. While he is very talented this album just didn't do much for me. I've never head any of the originals for the songs covered on this album so I have no comparison, maybe if I did this would rate higher but for now this gets a 2/5.

Kan tänka mig att det skulle vara underbart att lyssna på Willie Nelson spela och sjunga dessa låtar runt en lägereld på en strand, under ett stjärnhimmel ungefär som den på omslaget. Det är dock inte tillräckligt bra för att enbart låtarna ska föra mig till den mentala platsen. 'Unchained Melody' är fin. 'Blue Skies' också. Bästa låt: Blue Skies.

Entspannt, der gute Willie hat aber irgendwie eine sehr unangenehme Stimme. Sonst wärs ganz gut, aber mehr als 2 Sterne gehen sich nicht aus.

Become a fan of Willie and his work as I explored the rebel country the last few years. He has a unique voice that a lot don't seem to appreciate, but seems to work for his style of music. I have to say that his version of Always On My Mind is near the top oy my list of all time favorite songs. Yep, better than Elvis. Back to this album. Found it to be real mellow and kinda slow. Just not something I would expect from Willie. I really like the song Georgia On My Mind, but Ray's version is the best. This was different and probably not something I would come back to at any point. Well maybe if I needed some mellow stuff to try and fall asleep. I'm not going say this was bad, just not for me. 2.5

It's a good thing this album is called Stardust because listening to this at any time of day other than at night would be boring. Some okay stuff here. I'll probably listen to a few songs again when I'm winding down for the day. 2

My well this is so straight up it's kind of hard to believe the whole thing is not some conceptual joke. But no, Willie Nelson, the great outlaw country rocker, delivers a standard standards set. He brings absolutely nothing to these songs other than sincerity and a certain careworn-ness. The very very definition of inessential.

It's a whole load of nothing. Nothing original here.

Highlights: "Moonlight in Vermont," "Stardust," "Blue Skies," "Someone to Watch Over Me" It was a different time that you could go multiplatinum off a cover album. Or not; Nelson defied critical and commercial expectations about what people want and proved them all wrong. Good arrangements, comfortable performances. I don't know that any of these pieces were wanting for his performance, but it's interesting to hear a country guy assimilate plenty of harmonic suspense like whole tone and major-minor or augmented chords. I can't really read his outlaw persona into this, and maybe that's what fans liked so much; maybe it felt cathartic to hear him indulge in more fanciful songs. In itself, it feels banal and mawkish. You know, a sellout album.

A damn fine voice but a searingly bland batch of songs. Lacking in any depth or soul. File under nice but dull.

An album of covers. More for Willie Nelson fans. I liked his choices of songs to cover. His renditions of those not particularly exciting.

I can see why this sold well in it's day but now it sounds like the kind of elevator music you'd hear in a doctor's waiting room.

First thing that strikes me is that Willie didn't write a single song on this album. That makes it hard for me to say it should be included in a best of list. Willie shouldn't sing blue skies. The Wikipedia page for the song gives this cover it's own section. Put that beside Ella's version and tell me it's better. I guess these are all just covers of really old songs. Put Unchained next to literally any other version and tell me it's better. Yeah. I'll take old blue eyes over braids on September Song every time. This is where I check out. I get it. Willie covers songs. My whole life is a lie. Apparently Willie Nelson didn't really write any good music. He wrote Crazy and then a whole bunch of other really problematic songs. Most of the hits by The Highwaymen weren't actually written by The Highwayman. What's going on right now?

I was rather disappointed by this album, it sounded lacklustre to me.

Ugh. Another one of those albums which sounds very competent: well executed by talented musicians. It's just so boring. The sort of thing I'd expect to hear played quietly over the sound system of a department store. I must admit, I don't really understand how a album of covers done without any invention could be an album you must hear before you die.

Love songs by Willie Nelson. Just not for me ever.

Willie's voice just isn't my cup of tea. I found each cover to be weaker than its peers. Overall, it's just bland. There's not one song on here that I wouldn't choose to skip if it came up.

Ugh. It's Willie, I get it, but I dont have to like it. At least it wasn't full on country. Ray Charles' verison of Georgia On My Mind is better. There are a lot of covers but the originals are better. It was o.k. I will round up to a 2.

listening to Willie Nelson’s Stardust — a collection of pop standards from the great american songbook — and one is instantly reminded of the devastating myopia of a book termed 1001 Albums to Listen to Before You Die, published, of course, with an overwhelmingly westernized perspective. Nelson has a calming, buttery voice, and the production by Booker T. Nelson is smooth and airy and almost weightless, but there is nothing here that is interesting enough to consider it essential listening, unless one is already familiar with said “standards” and how Nelson is revitalizing them as it were. the record is front-loaded, which makes its second half a bit of a drag, but i can appreciate Nelson’s dedication here — the songs are performed with a lot of love (love that’ll most likely be amplified through the listening ears of someone who, again, already knows and loves those standards). it’s easy listening, music that thrives in the background of a quiet conversation, but i can’t find much else to latch onto. Stardust, according to Wikipedia, is Nelson’s 22nd album, and he has gone on to release 53 records since — i cannot, for the life of me, understand why THIS is the one i have to listen to before i die, but alas.

I'm not a big fan of country but I'm still going to give this album an honest chance. I just hope I don't absolutely hate this record. The harmonica at times is really pleasant, I like it a lot. This isn't necessarily an album I would choose to sit through, more of something I'd get through just to do it and be done. I do like certain aspects of some songs but it's just not a sound that I prefer. I could definitely see my mom's side of the family having this on repeat though.

I didn’t expect to see a cover album on this list. On “Stardust”, Willie Nelson covers many pre-1960 vocal standards. However, he does a good job at changing up the sound on these tracks. There’s a really soulful, country-tinged vibe.

Well, I was not expecting a cover album, so this was a bit of a surprise. I wish I could say it was a pleasant surprise, but "On the Sunny Side of the Street" was the only track that really caught my ear, apart from "Georgia on My Mind." Sadly, the latter did so because it couldn't hold a candle to Ray Charles' version (but that's not a knock on Willie specifically—no one sings that song like Ray). I wanted to like this album, as I respect Willie as a person, but if this album's any indication, it appears his music just isn't my thing. Just too countrified for my taste.

There are so many more "Willie" albums. Not sure why this one of him singing a bunch of other people's songs makes this list.

Didn't really do much for me, but was pleasant enough.

This is just a bad idea, plain and simple. I won't give it a 1 because it's more bearable than the albums I've given 1 to.

Maybe because this style has come back a bit with other artists like Bill Calahan (who does a much more interesting version), I found this quite boring.

Ugh, how dreadfully pleasant. Apparently these songs are all pop classics but I’m only familiar with Unchained Melody. I thought that was a pretty powerful song but he’s stripped it of any emotion, energy, vocal range or passion. The more I listen/think about it the lower my score gets. If this Outlaw County I hate to think what shit the In-laws are doing.

Mixed feelings on this album. There's a beautiful simplicity to Willie's renditions of these songs. I also found myself hearing - and more often than not - wishing I was listening to the original versions of these songs compared to the covers on this album. I appreciate Willie's efforts to connect with his older audience and introduce his younger audience to classic songs, but I felt most of these songs fell short of their originals.

Über Willie Nelson und sein quasi-erotisches Verhältnis zu seiner Gitarre „Trigger“zu lesen ist interessanter, als seinen Musik zu hören. Diese kleine Garstigkeit soll nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass ich ihn für einen sympathischen Typen und versierten Musiker halte, der sich der Sache verschrieben hat. Mir ist das alles zu konventionell, die Nähe zum Country tut ihr übriges. Aber seinen Django hat er ganz offenbar gehört.

This was very "easy listening" and Nelson's voice sounds thin compared with other classic country artists.

Not nearly enough energy here to sustain interest for even a sub-40 minute LP. Nelson can write a great country ballad, but without any uptempo tracks in the mix to balance them out this album becomes a snoozefest real quick.

I don't like "standards". It's not that I think they're the absolute worst thing ever to happen in music (pretty much the entire top 40 of the last 5-6 years is worse alone) but I do find the sentiment, cheesiness, lack of creativity and just overall low-hanging-fruitness of them kinda sickening. It's kinda telling that, in 2021, they're generally reserved for bottom-feeders like Norah Jones and Michael Buble. So yeah. I also recognise that this comes from a different time, and maybe it wasn't such a load of kitschy shit for Willie to put this crap out in 1978. So I'm trying to keep an open mind here, although this being the second Willie Nelson album I've had this week (and the second that isn't any good) it is a bit of a struggle. Overall, at least it has the good grace to only go for half an hour. 2/5.

Mysigt! Jag vill definitivt minnas att detta är det lugnaste och kanske mest stämningsfulla album jag fått genererat hittills. Musik som man vill lyssna på när den inte ska ta så mycket uppmärksamhet, men ändå kunna ge dom som befinner sig i rummet en känsla av behag och trygghet. Det är precis den känslan jag får under min lyssning denna morgon, detta är något jag skulle kunna sätta på under en middag exempelvis, då det primära fokuset ligger på att föra ett samtal men Willie Nelson ligger i bakgrunden och skapar stämningen i rummet. Bäst: "Georgia on my mind"

This album is very slow. I usually like slow songs, but most of these were a miss for me. Highlights were Stardust, the title track, the cover of Unchained Melody and Someone To Watch Over Me.

Maybe I just don’t like country music as much as I aspire to. This lost me some of the way through. Odd moments of transcendence and beauty for sure, but mostly faded into the background because I’m incapable of enjoying listening to old craggy men tell gorgeous tales in cracked voices over their melancholy guitars.

Willie Nelson hatte ich anders in Erinnerung, und wenn Country, dann auch gern Country. Schöne Songs sind das auf dem Album, aber seit der Neu-Interpretation von damals sind irgendwie auch 50 Jahre und ungezählte weitere Neu-Interpretationen dieses beliebten Straußes bunter Melodien vergangen. Ist ganz nett, reißt mich aber auch überhaupt nicht vom Hocker. 2,4 oder 2,6 - das ist hier die Frage.

My grandparents used to listen to stuff like this. And it actually took me back to that time. So I’m actually ok with most of this album. ‘Georgia On My Mind’ is pretty darn tootin.

I failed Dusty Springfield for having an album of nothing but covers, and I'll do it again to Willie. In this case, though, it was much easier to do since this was also boring as suck and, frankly, irrelevant. A completely wasted entry that could and should have been filled by any of the so many other ORIGINAL acts missing from this busted list. That sounded a lot angrier than I wanted... but still... damn...

Mellow, a little annoying, good for evenings or for rides to the bedlam when you check yourself in. When I listened to Georgia on my mind I do wanted to listen to ray charles version instead. Very badly.

An old American man singing old American songs, slowly. I guess the music would be fine as background music in a really old fashioned restaurant, but the old man singing would be distracting. Actually I just checked and I can't believe this is being sung by a 44 year old. He sounds like he's about to keel over at any moment. I found this painful to listen to.

An album of pop covers from a country legend? Ok. Some albums are hard to play through when all you can do is think of all the music you’re not listening to in order for you to be able to rate it correctly on this app. This is so dull and I’m only on track 4. Atleast the album is under 40 minutes but, oh boy, the last 15 minutes have felt like all morning so far… Ah, the relief when the album has obviously finished and a song you enjoy from one of your actual playlists comes on to ease the pain…

A vanity project that could have been recorded by any karaoke singer with a few dollars to burn? This is an album you would play to your Granny as you sit by her deathbed. AHHH now I get it! This IS the actual 1001st album! (edit: Ok I've reassessed. This isn't in the same shit league as Eno or Cohen. He has a nice voice and it's harmless even if it IS boring. Gonna boost this to a 1½

I often enjoy covers, good to hear a different take on the original. Broadly speaking I thought Nelson didn't really add anything new or interesting and some of the covers were actively worse than the original

Was I just in the wrong mood? Genuinely surprised that people like this. If you're going to cover all your favourite songs, please add something to them, rather than distilling them down until they all sound pretty much indistinguishable from each other. Admittedly, I don't know much WN music; I know who he is, but that's all. So perhaps there was some context to the choices he made here? Apart from Sunny Side briefly lifting my spirits (and securing a grudging extra star) I found this very dull. (Update. Changed my mind about the extra star over the weekend.)

This is really too representative of this list: a legend of American music (honestly a legend only within the boarders of the USA) covering standards of American pop music. Very self-centered. Truth is: this album is boring, that's the kind of boring music you'd have in a lounge bar or whatever. I started to write that it is not that bad, but after 4 songs it's driving me mad. I might not be in the right mood to listen to it, but this kind of chill stuff tends to make me angry.

Sounds like a retirement home. I can listen once but no more. I get the vibe of the album but it's not interesting. I don't hate Willie Nelson but I think i hate this. His voice is usually not good however this is just bad.

Awful! I was hopeful when I saw Willie Nelson’s name but before the first song had even hit halfway I knew I was in for a punishing listen and then it got worse. The songs took forever to get through and I kept checking how many were left until it was over.

Ahhh Willie Nelson. The ol’ misty eyed traveller, the ol’ Red Headed stepchild, the big saloon, the peach tree cobbler, the grandiose bar mitzvah, the even more ol’ opry. One of those has to be right. Whatever. Modern country has led me to believe that I hate country music. Considering that I am both a Canadian and a person who has brain cells and a personality that doesn’t depend on branding, it’s been a tough sell. Older country that has appeared in my rotation (and in the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack) shows that some of the folk roots still linger. Will ol Wiry Willie be a staunch folk appreciator? Or will he show an early foray into the glorified truck commercials (feat. Casual racism) that clog up the country charts today. Take it away. Is this about Cody Rhodes? I wish it was. This wasn’t it for me. Not enough going on for me. Doesn’t mean I need 10,000 bells and whistles, I just found it to be slow. Ugh a cover? Hoagy Carmichael is spinning in his grave. Nobody names their kids after sandwiches anymore. Truly a sign of the difficult times we live in. I dream of a world where little Meatball Marinaras roam the streets with their pals Footlong Hero and Cheesteak. Sinpler tomes. Or is it simpler times? You know. I just can’t remember. Sad. Oh no is this Khruangbin? No. It’s still Willie. Well. This is incredibly mid. The harmonica is surprisingly the best part of this album so far. This also sounds like a church hymns. And from a boring white church too. Are these all covers? I think this another one. I swear to god if Hoagy wrote this one, I’m going to visit his grave. Alright, so these are all “pop standards.” This is like the Ella Fitzgerald thing. Why? More on this later. I do somehow like the really bad recording of the kick drum. It sounds vaguely wet. Otherwise, I’m in tears of boredom. OPEN THIS PIT UP, WE’RE ABOUT TO GET UNCHAINED. Don’t say “I’ve hungered for your touch.” I’m calling the 1978 cops. They said they wouldn’t come unless they could shoot a minority repeatedly. How things stay the same. This song has pretty elements but it is also incredibly cheesy. A little too saccharine. This is for all my autumn heads. Remember when fall actually used to start in September? That was cool. Existential climate dread aside, Willie continues to mention other months in the September song. Lucky it’s not his, otherwise I’d have to throw down in the saloon. That falsetto burst on HAT. Got a genuine laugh out of me. Goldust mentioned. This truly is a Rhodes family reunion. This was silly. Talk about Hard Times. Loonies in a river, fallen cups of Tim Horton’s, moonlight in Thunder Bay. People who meet, to conduct fentanyl exchange, are so hypnotized by the purity of the cut. The geese cackle. Moonlight in Thunder Bay. Snap along everybody. Another mosh anthem. I have historically liked this song, so this will be telling. Yeah. Just as I suspected. Big Willie Style is boring the shit out of me. Willie sez “my girl is a disgusting monster, but it’s all I got. Especially if I keep releasing rehashed songs from the 20’s.” Man he doubles down on the “my girlfriend is ugly” rhetoric. Brother. Not good. Yeesh. Uhh this felt like it was playing at half speed. It’s easy to look back at Stardust and realize it was an album made to stuff shelves and sell to old people. I can almost guarantee that every thrift store in North America has at least three copies of this thing sandwiched between Perry Como’s second greatest hits and Mozart sung by the German Catholic Choir. These songs had no life, and were barely explored yet somehow interminable at the same time. I know now that these are reinterpretations, so it’s not that I am expecting original lyrics or even core melodies, but there is zero originality to the performances on this record. Take all of the copies of this record and crush them into a cube. Sell that cube to the highest bidder. Might as well squeeze one more cent out of this soulless heap. 1-1.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Learning the name Hoagy and picturing a big sandwich.

An album chock full over pop covers sung by a stoner country guy is not what I would expect on the list. How this became such a chart topping, award winning, quadruple platinum album is insane. Too many old fogies buying this snooze fest? No more Willie please...1.1.

Unfortunately the second Willie Nelson album in two weeks. This is in line with the prior album. It's not bad by any means but doesn't move the needle for me at all. Really slow light country songs are made for someone but its not me. Nothing against Willie but two albums was all I need for the next 10 years. 1.30 stars
