Full of bangers
Aye I still hate Oasis but this was very good
I really like Oasis’s music, and this was a good showcase for it. Definitely recommend.
* fave song - live forever * the marias did a cover of live forever and this is my first time actually listening to the original and its SO GOOD, I instantly knew this was going to be my favorite track on the album. columbia and supersonic were up there for me as well. married with children felt like a great closer to this album.
Had some good stuff. Even though I don’t listen to rock as much, I thoroughly enjoyed Live Forever and Digsy’s Dinner
Great rock anthems, with all the hallmarks of great rock anthems - great and prominent guitar hooks, catchy choruses, and memorable lyrics. There are really no bad songs on this album, and this is not just due to the songwriting, with the raw and muddled mixing sound combined with that iconic guitar tone breathing life into every song. Apart from the classics "Live Forever", "Supersonic" and "Rock 'n' Roll Star", lesser known songs "Up in the Sky" and "Columbia" are also great.
classic 1st album
I'm completely bias because I'm over familiar with the music, I'm a product of the 90s, I was at their reunion gig and I've seen Liam and Noel separately in their solo careers. Hands down one of the best debuts of all time. Basic musicianship but some of the most iconic songs of the 90s are here. 4/5.
Some absolute bangers, but non hits feel a bit samey. Surely a classic album for influence on 90s culture, but not one I want to listen to front to back often
Maybe… Had I been a bit younger when this came out, my score might be higher. It’s good, not great. Big rock sound, heavy dub. Vocals are unique, but not a fan of the whine. Lyrically good, but composition is average. Just my opinion, but that’s all that counts, right? 2 stars for each bratty brother.
Pleasantly surprised
Not filled with guts bit very very solid album
This album is solid throughout, definitely one of the top oasis albums. Not a single track is a miss
M'ha agradat també Married with children.
I never really listened to Oasis in the 90s, but this album sounds very nostalgic to me. I think it's just the 90s in general, where to me mid-90s rock was very open and large sounding. It's hard to explain, maybe it's something with the chord sequences. There's just something about mid-90s rock that I just connect with. Anyway, I like it. I feel like debut albums are usually just fine, but I think this is a pretty good debut.
MY LOVER OASIS IS BACK Don't love it as much as Morning Glory but still good Saved to playlist: Lived Forever, Up In The Sky, and Digsy's Diner, Slides Away, Married With Children Married With Children best song on here. I thought they rest of the album was just pretty good but fucking majestic finisher. I wanna give a standing ovation just cause they ended the album with this song 8/10
Fun album. Reminds me of highschool lol
Columbia, Slide Away, Up in the Sky all great
Very fun listen, captures the vibe perfectly
Liam Gallaghers vocals don't do it for me, but the songwriting is quite special.
Came into this with quite low expecations after having 'Whats The Story (Morning Glory)' as our first Oasis album on this list, which is a fantastic album. But I was quite wrong. There are a serious of real bangers on this record, like 'Rock 'n' Roll Star', 'Live Forever', and 'Supersonic'. I really liked 'Slide Away' as well, but realized the chorus sounds like a worse version of 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out', after which I changed my mind a bit. The tracks between the hits are not that impressive, but not unbearable by any means. Overall this feels like a 4 star album for me, and I was pleasantly surprised that it delivered like it did. I understand now why Oasis was so hyped back in the days.
Coming of a rant about 90s rock music I was not looking forward to this but Oasis warmed me up to them throughout the record. Their sound is super-catchy and while I don’t know too many tracks from this record I still enjoyed it. Favourite song was of course “Live Forever”. Solid 4 star. I get it.
Almost American flare and grit but distinctly northern English in its attitude.catchy and fun

Bon petit album de rock tout ça.
Great record. Memorable simple lyrics, basic instrumentation and strong voice perfected through much production delivering a record that can always be sung along to.
Think they are a pair of knobs but they do know how to make a great album.
Good britpop album also
feels like a classic indie rock album. pretty decent
Best worst album ever. Or maybe the other way around.
The banger-to-stinker ratio here is very clean. The good songs are very good. I'm still a blur loyal though
Good Debut Album
Benjamin said they're okay
Not as strong as the next record. Still there's some great songs on here like Supersonic and Live Forever or Up In The Sky (is this riff - taxman?). They really had some long songs didn't they and those lyrics are even simpler on this record than the next one. Conflicted because these are good songs, but by a band that was clearly not at their peak just yet. I think that means a 4.
Solid album. A lot of good tracks. Enjoyed the vocals, the music and the overall energy.
Insanely messy production nah fuck it this is amazing. wall of sound shit
This feels like the record to launch 10 million tracksuits
A classic for sure. Yes it lacks originality but they also have carved their own gritty sound that will live on for generations, this album playing a large part of it. Not perfect, but a great listen.
Great debut
Another group I didn't pay enough attention to when they started out. This is a wonderful rock'n'roll album.
Quintessential sounds of 90s indie Britain, liams voice was probably the best it ever sounded before all the drugs and vocal problems. So many good songs it’s hard to skip anything from this album :> 4/5 I did grow up with britpop parents so my opinion is biased as heck (which is why I’m not giving it a 5) digsys dinner was probably my favourite, reminds me of the days I’d sing this song with an old school friend that passed away too young (rip daisy) 🌼❤️
This is my third album of British guitar music in a row (after Coldplay and Elvis Costello). While this is the dumbest of the three, its also the best. Its pure rock, swagger, and indulgence. There are some classic tracks and some nice deep cuts. A lot to admire, even if its admittedly quite dumb.
4 very nice
It's interesting to listen to this album after reviewing Nirvana's Nevermind just a few days ago. Perhaps the two biggest alt rock bands of the 90s, with two different sounds, capturing two different zeitgeists. Nirvana was more cynical and disillusioned; Oasis is more optimistic and sentimental. Nirvana comes from punk; Oasis comes from psychedelia. I don't see Oasis as a response to grunge, but just a complement to it, and the seminal sound captured by 90s Britpop. I hadn't listened to an Oasis album in full prior to reviewing this. As a whole the album is an unrelenting wall of sound that wore out my ears, like every inch of space needs to be filled on almost every track. The intricate layered guitars coagulate into a monstrous entity, sometimes like the glam guitars of the 70s ("Cigarettes and Alcohol" is T.Rex, hello) and sometimes like the massive tower of shoegaze. I am not always the biggest fan of Liam Gallagher's vocal inflections. They are iconic but also cheesy after decades of satirical impersonations and bad connotations with 3-chord guitar bros obsessed with "Wonderwall". His vocals often take me out of the song when there is so much to take in. "Is it myyy imaa-gi-nay-shee-un/ Or have I finally found/ Something worth living for?" So it took a second listen to extract more love for this album. You need to just immerse yourself in the noise, go along for the ride, accept the rock star lifestyle without worrying too much.
FOOKIN BIBLICAL MAN
All the Oasis knockoffs on this list made me wonder if Oasis was all that good in the first place. This made me remember how good they are. They aren’t great musicians, the singing is grating, and the guitar sound is very muddy, but the songwriting, as derivative as it can be, is exceptional. 4/5
All I know about Oasis is Wonderwall, the fact the two brothers absolutely HATE one another, and that it’s the band for coke enthusiasts in England. Didn’t know a single song on the album but honestly it’s really good, very strong debut album
meh
4.0 51:56 (11 tracks, 1994 debut) Better than I expected. I've always considered them Beatles want-to-bes but the album was good. Production/sound wasn't great is my main complaint.
Its just fun rock that goes wild sometimes. Oasis are pretty good and this guy's voice puts a nice smile on my face. highlights: live forever, slide away 8/10
Hell yeah!!!
TOODAYYYY IS GONNA BE THE DAY
I wasn’t a part of the Oasis hive, probably turned off by all the drama. I was a bit surprised this album is actually so straight-forward. Just a standard rocker that doesn’t really do anything new, but has a few great tracks I liked a lot? Maybe it was worth all that drama! (PS- no it wasn’t worth all that drama)
Always found it curious that Oasis lyrics are rather bland, but their press zingers are creatively scathing and/or hilarious. “Wayne Rooney looks like a fucking balloon with Weetabix crushed on top” “Would Jesus Christ have been a pervert if he had a crisp packet on his head?” “He's rude, arrogant, intimidating and lazy. He's the angriest man you'll ever meet. He's like a man with a fork in a world of soup” Noel on Liam
Some bangers, especially if I’m in the right mood
Feels very dated and plodding at times. Not listened to it as a whole for ages. Probably won't ever again. Contains the best Oasis song - slide away
Okay
Best Oasis album
classic!
Ya know what, I've always poopood this band. Partly because the songs I'd heard were pants, but also because Liam G was rude to me when I met him in a Spanish supermarket. At any rate, this debut album is pretty good! Shits all over Wonderwal et al. Good craíc
I feel like this is an album that doesn’t do anything crazy or out of the box but just absolutely slaps with what it does do which is basically Brit pop based on rock n’ roll rather than punk or new wave like other Brit Pop releases of the time. It’s catchy, loud, energetic and performed really well with a great overall sound to the album. I think I prefer Liam’s voice to Damon Albarn in Blur which also makes this more enjoyable than the Blur ones i’ve gotten but maybe not so much with the variety of the songs (felt the need to compare this with Blur). However, that again doesn’t really matter so much here as most of these songs are great and the riffs are awesome especially with the amount of distortion they use, it’s just a very full sounding album as a result matched with the energy of the drums. Favourites: Rock N’ Roll Star, Up in the sky, Columbia, Bring It on Down, Digsy’s dinner and Slide Away. Overall, 8/10.
3.5 really
The only thing I knew about Oasis was their song Wonderwall, which I can not stand. But this album was fun. I will probably play it again.
I like this, I've heard it before. Not quite as catchy as their next album (with Wonderwall) but has a lot of the same energy and same distorted sound.
banging
Kind of surprised me how little I thought these guys sound like the Beatles anymore and how much they now sound to me like, well, Oasis. On the many stellar (and now overfamiliar) cuts this album offers, radio-readiness and brand reliability still seem to win out over inspiration, and the fashionably cynical, derivative, or non-sequiturish lyrical sentiments generally ring hollow. While I do enjoy a lot of these songs, digging into the full record is about as rewarding as eating a whole tin of Christmas butter cookies (and I am not here admitting I have done this!).
Doesn't have the pop hits as their other albums, but really solid.
Three barely competent musicians, one mercurial singer, an inspired guitarist and some of the worst audio production ever. Anjali Dutt is right; every song is compressed down to an inch of dynamic range, rendering it basically unlistenable. An interesting experiment would be a Taylor Swift style complete rebuild of every part of the album from scratch. Could this actually sound good?
Very interesting, obviously heard most of these before, and this and the second album are really the only good Oasis albums, but this is actually really great. Its always interesting to hear how more distorted and washed out most of these are, to the point where they sort of become a big shoegaze (obviously only guitar wise). Vocals are great, and I think Liam Gallagher's voice is at its absolute peak here, as it sounds a lot more pleasant than even some songs on the album the next year. I feel like some of the vocal and guitar parts are literally just stolen from Beatles and Rolling Stones songs, but I guess that's fine. I think my favourite Oasis song ever is on here, the Digsy's dinner one, which is absolutely amazing, everything sits together so perfectly, just so sad its so short. Favourite songs: rock 'n' roll star, live forever, up in the sky, Columbia, bring it on down, Digsy's Dinner, married with children. Probably on par with the other album. Overall around 8/10
Not a Oasis fan boy but I liked this better than I thought I would. Couldn't get it turned up loud enough. Love the opening track
A bit stale but listenable
Very solid debut album that is eclipsed by its follow-up, however, the Oasis sound is established right out of the gate with classic tracks like 'Supersonic', 'Up in the Sky' and 'Rock'n'roll Star' on offer. For many this album and Britpop generally represent a period of optimism for those growing up in 90s Britain. As a kid at the time I remember the feeling well and DM played a big part in that. Top Track = Cigarettes & Alcohol
So one of the problems with the 1001 albums list is that there is way too much Britpop. Outside of the obvious UK bias on this list, I’ve become inclined to agree. Because now I realize, all the other Britpop albums are trying to be Oasis. Outside of losing a little steam in the second half, this is definitely one of the more vibrant and energetic albums of the 90’s. A great counterpoint to the influx of grunge that was dominating the airwaves, especially over in the States. A hell of a debut that introduced us the Gallaghers… for better or worse. Favorite track: Rock n’ Roll Star Other hits: Shakermaker, Up in the Sky, Supersonic, Columbia, Slide Away, Live Forever
Cool
there are some huge bangers on this one. I like the guy’s voice. Maybe morning glory is better? This is also a mid 4 album for sure
cool energetic rock album Nice 90s feel better than what's the story probably Slide Away is the best song Married with Children kinda didn't fit, but it was sort of a nice closer like an 8/10
3.5
11 songs, 51 minutes Definitely maybe a really great album Everything somehow sounds the same but also different Such distinct vocals and supersonic bangs
Decent album
Yes, I refuse to give the Gallagher brothers 5 stars out of principle. What are you going to do about it?
Definitely marvellous
I liked it a lot it had a rock vibe and reminded me of my friend that likes oasis
I like Oasis plenty, but was always more drawn to the more obnoxious, flamboyant Britpop bands like Blur and Pulp and Suede -- while I'm always gonna be more of a sucker for those kind of pompous, arty bands, this is just an undeniably good record. Confident and unpretentious. But there's definitely a couple of songs here like Up In The Sky and Digsy's Diner that feel a bit samey and I could do without.
Great Songs: Live Forever, Cigarettes & Alcohol Good Songs: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Shakemaker, Up in the Sky, Supersonic, Bring It on Down, Slide Away, Married With Children Mid Songs: Columbia, Digsy's Dinner Bad Songs:
Slide Away is a masterpiece. Some other great songs as well but not as great as What's The Story. Overall a good record, close to 5.
Never been much into Oasis, even with their recent reunion. Idk if it's a generic sound or if their sound permeated into other group's sounds. This one doesn't feel like a strong 4, but it definitely feels higher than a 3 which means I am giving this one a B-.
Was hoping that this album maybe did more for me than the last one did, but still kind of in the same boat with Oasis of being underwhelmed. Not saying it is bad at all and I am happy to listen whenever they come up. Just sounds like above average alternative rock to me. This was definitely better than a 3 so it'll get a low 4
Oasis has some solid hits but could never get fully into them. Live Forever is a jam, and I've always really loved Married With Children in it's simplicity. The rest is good but not great, but I still feel like a 3 is too low but a 4 is too high. Going with a 4 but it's an extremely low 4. Just better than a lot of the recent 3's we've had.
Incredible debut. This and the next album are classics
No skips
Nothing groundbreaking, but a decent listen
Excellent debut
This was neat. I don't know much Oasis outside of their big hits, so it was interesting to get a familiar sound on entirely new songs to me. This album is certainly a little harder than their more mainstream songs, and they're all composed really well. Cigarettes and Alcohol is completely ripping off Bang a Gong? But not sure if that is intentional as an homage. Decent album, would be a 3.5 if I had the ability but I guess I'll give it a 4
Not much to say, just a very good album.
Very grungy wholesome listening experience.
I didn't know Oasis could rock like that. They're actually a pretty good rock 'n' roll band. I'm gonna be honest, I haven't listened to all that much Oasis ever in my life besides the two big songs. My friend, Joey, would love this band. I like the lyrics in 'Columbia' and 'Married with Children' and I rocked out hard to 'Cigarettes and Alcohol'.
I really wish more of their shit sounded like this production-wise. The guitars are just so lively and full of texture. The album has this a bit noisy, almost shoegaze-y (especially on Colombia) sound to it but it's still super sharp and full of great melodies. The songs are actually mostly quite sad and hedonistic from what I've paid attention. Creates a funny contrast with the life affirming ballads at tge core of these songs. Good stuff, too bad their later shit is either kinda bland or profuced like shit
Truly a good listen. I liked a lot of the songs and the last one really nailed it for me. It sounded like early 2000s movies.
I want to like this less than I do.
One of the best albums of the 90s
Wears its influences on a sleeve so large it can be seen from space. And no, it's not just The Beatles, it's 70s glam like Slade & T-Rex, Manc contemporaries like the Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets, and even the Coca-Cola Company. Derivative at the time, and overdone ever since, but still a seminal album that hits you over the head with its 3-guitar arrangements and the distinctive snarl of Liam just before his voice was ravaged by Cigarettes & Alcohol (and other substances).
I have listened much more to "Whats the Story (Morning Glory)" and had never listened to this all the way through. It's a really good album with nary a dud in the bunch. Just enjoyable arena rock that doesn't try to do too much. These guys had it and they had a confidence, even arrogance, about themselves, a swagger, that was (and I guess still is) undeniable.
Wouldn't consider myself an Oasis fan past Morning Glory, the Gallaghers' arrogance, greed, and self seriousness repels me and I think they ran out of ideas quick. But this is a great debut record, some call it muddy but I love how washed out the production sounds. Wasn't as familiar with this one and theres some really cool deep cuts, liked Bring It On Down and Digsy's Diner especially. And Live Forever deserves a place on any best of Britpop compilation
Un discazo y un himno intergeneracional🥰🥰🥰🥰
Feels simultaneously like young 5 lads making music they really love for themselves and a rowdy seasoned super group. A classic. I don’t love Oasis but you can’t argue with this really. No skips. 3.5 feels just right for me but I can’t give it a 3.
Hadn’t heard this before, but actually enjoyed it more than I was expecting. Took a few songs to get into it
thats such a great album, definitely one of my favs
Few bands manage to release more than one masterpiece to defy the test of time, especially when one of those is the debut album. Oasis marked the mid 90s with their first two albums, representing, along with their rivals Blur, the britpop movement The debut was sudden, the movement was mostly local to Manchester and aimed the british press of the time, and caught interest due to some ear-catching singles, like Supersonic, Live Forever, Slide Away and Whatever, mixing modern indie laid-back ramshackle sound production and emotive quasi-nihilistic lyricism with catchy melodies and powerful riffs, akin to earlier movements that sprouted out of the UK in the past, like post-punk, glam rock and the main idol of admiration of the Gallagher brothers: the 60s beat era, especially (but not limited to) a tribute to the Beatles (except with more drunk and grumpy members with sum terrible infights) The "britpop" (or Kool Britannia) movement was controversial at the time due to critics and old-guard rock-n'-roll'ers accusing them of being unoriginal, "plagiarizing" classic acts and appropriating their aesthetic (as if Bowie or the Who's sound was anything close to shoegaze or grunge). As always, the rock n' roll god forbid taking inspirations and reinterpretating formulas (as if rock itself isn't a reinterpretation of 40s blues) I still think Morning Glory is the superior 5/5 out of the two gems, but given enough time, I wouldn't be surprised if Definetely Maybe grow on me. It'll *definetely maybe* rise to a 5/5 rate someday
Definitely. ....well..... maybe. Takes me back to my teens.
So many great tunes. Such a confident debut.
Long album, but good to listen to
I actually thought this was pretty solid. Wasn't too familiar with the songs on this album but enjoyed it.
This was pleasant but not groundbreaking
Very dense a really noisy record. As if The Beatles took even more drugs or something. Obviously not as great as The Beatles, but the melodies are written in a very beatlesque way. This album really kicked off the whole Britpop movement, even if it wasn't the first album of the genre. I like it, I don't love it, I hardly ever return to it, but always enjoy it a lot when I do. Key tracks: Rock 'n' Roll Star Shakemaker Live Forever Supersonic Cigarettes & Alcohol
Much better than their first album. The sound is so full and such solid rock. Kind of like a British Boston, in the sense that, like Boston, they are constantly filling each second with more and more sound, creating a symphony in every minute. Solid. 4.5/5
Pretty good.
I've been familiar with this album. Oasis music is not really mine type but some tracks are pleasant.
okay so i see what the british were on about now
Definitely Maybe a good album
Very solid album, lots of good songs. Easy one to put on and listen to
Rediscovered an appreciation for Oasis with this one. One of those albums that is reliable start to finish. Even the overplayed hits…
Album 2/1001 Brilliantly captures the mood of life in mid 90s Britain - positive and hopeful about life in spite of its hardships. “I remember Nirvana had a tune called ‘I Hate Myself and Want to Die’, and I was like … ‘Well, I’m not fucking having that.’ … We had fuck-all, and I still thought that getting up in the morning was the greatest fuckin’ thing ever...Everything’s gonna be fine. Stay optimistic. If there’s dark clouds coming, they’ll leave again. They always do. The world is round... No matter how big a pile of shite you’ve gotten yourself into... you will get over it. It will go away just like the weather.” ~Noel Gallagher Favourite lyrics: LIVE FOREVER: "Maybe I just wanna fly Wanna live, I don't wanna die Maybe I just wanna breathe Maybe I just don't believe Maybe you're the same as me We see things they'll never see You and I are gonna live forever." SUPERSONIC: "I need to be myself I can't be no one else I'm feeling supersonic, give me gin and tonic You can have it all, but how much do you want it? You make me laugh Give me your autograph Can I ride with you in your BMW? You can sail with me in my yellow submarine" " ...I know a girl called Elsa, she's into Alka-Seltzer She sniffs it through a cane on a supersonic train And she makes me laugh I got her autograph She done it with a doctor on a helicopter She's sniffin' in a tissue, sellin' the Big Issue" Also a big fan of Liam's pronunciation/intonation on C&A - especially of "Sunsheeeeiiinnne" Iconic. Favourite song: Supersonic 🚄 Honourable Mention: Live Forever (perhaps THE anthem of the 90s) ♾️ Cigarettes & Alcohol🚬🍺 Slide Away 👋 Rock 'n' Roll Star😎🤘
Pretty good, innit? Not as iconic as What’s the Story Morning Glory, but still good. Beatles influence is palpable.
Fairly obvious why this album was such a hit in the UK. Raw and raucous but tempered by memorable riffs and melodic hooks. While they are far from my favorite Brit-pop band from the 90s (hello Radiohead and Pulp) I have to admit how good this album is.
Nice enough debut from one of the geat Britpop bands. Just like Blur, they show their influences, possible to the point of being a bit too derivative.
I didn’t get into Oasis till much later in life. It started with watching interviews with the boys which are hilarious. Not my favorite Oasis record but iconic nonetheless
Solid album
Oasis without the hits? I came in negative but it won me over 7/10 a lot of those recently
Had a lot of fun listening to this. My first oasis listen and it didn’t disappoint. Some tracks are a bit samey but there’s enough to like here that you leave the whole album on anyway. Will be listening again.
I actually really like this one, especially the closing track made me wanna listen to morning glory again
Still prefer blur
Although I found it slightly repetitive (arguably it's just their sound) - it was a complete album
4,4
If I put aside my feelings about the band and their fans, it's really good. Doesn't feel that ground breaking when you listen to it now but hearing it for the first time will have been sick. Isn't special enough for 5 stars but it's a great album.
Classic
Best oasis album period.
3 or 4. Liked it all fine enough but it didn't super jump out at me. But maybe it doesn't need to.
Solid seven out of 10 album. Nothing was particularly interesting, but it was pretty good. I’d only ever heard Wonderwall, so it was good to hear more oasis.
Best brit-pop album thus far. Just sounds good, can’t rly describe it idk
Early 90’s indie/alt rock. Theres a bit of a punk sensibility mixed in here too with the vocal delivery at times and the call backs to classic 60’s rock. Notables songs include Rock N Roll Star, Live Forever, Up in the Sky, Columbia, Supersonic, Cigarettes and Alcohol, Slide Away, Married With Children.
Great from front to back. Although I think they really perfected their sound on their next release. This is great in it's own regard though.
This is between a 3 and a four. I’m tired and am rounding up to four.
Better than Coldplay
Yup
Another that’s a classic for a reason. A proper album where you listen to every song rather than a couple of singles and some filler.
An absolute classic album. I’d forgotten how much Oasis just *arrived*, fully formed. So close to being my first 5 star album… but the back half of the album isn’t quite as good as the first (still don’t like Columbia, it’s about 3 hours too long).
Better than Wonderwall, and that's all that matters. I haven't listened to (What's The Story) Morning Glory? yet, and I imagine it's as good as this – but thank the gods, at least this record doesn't force me to listen to Wonderwall again. Instead, it forces me to listen to various chunks of muddy nonsensical goodness with an aggressively basic classic-rock sound. Really pours one out to all the 70s music nerds who became depressed after the rise of punk, Britpop, grunge, disco, and whatever the heck was going on with synths in the 80s. Up In The Sky, Bring It On Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol, and of course Rock 'n' Roll Star are all essentially semi-alt renditions of a sound dating all the way back to the late 60s. We hear elements of CCR, the Doors, the Who, the Eagles, and everyone in between. And the Beatles (can't forget them). Plus Liam Gallagher's silly nasally little voice. Even though attitude and political messaging has its place in music, particularly that of the early/mid 90s, I have a soft spot for artists that toss all that aside in favour of a happy, carefree sound with (judging by the reviews) relatively empty lyricism. You can tell this from the song titles alone, and the simple yet bombastic sound (I-VIIb-IV progressions, slightly distorted guitars, good drumming, the whole shabang) only serves to bolster this view. As another reviewer wrote (and I agree with): "A vastly different facet of Britpop that cared less about post-punk/new wave reminiscing and more about pummeling, piledriving good old fashioned rock and roll, Oasis were ready to pick up a new baton for those who were more inclined to having a good time and forgetting your ills." 4/5 Key tracks: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Live Forever, Supersonic
Never really got into the Britpop thing (aside from Pulp and Elastica) but never really hated any of the bands. This is solid rock and roll music. But nothing special? Maybe it doesn’t need to be .
I kind of love this album and kind of love Oasis. But not really. Ya know?
It was alright, not the best but still good
Muy bueno
I really love this album, sure it's not mixed well. But, damn it, it's just a fun album. Everyone needs a good basic rock and roll album to put on now and again.
It’s a shame that Liam and Noel died in a murder-suicide in 2002, though it’s hotly debated whether any suicide took place: both left manically-scrawled notes that read “I’m going to kill the bastard before he kills me”. Forensic scientists were unable to determine who died first, but the sheer quantity of mayhem - guitar strings wrapped round necks, eyes gouged out with picks, mic stands shoved up arses, etc. - suggests something extremely heartfelt took place.
Never heard them before but I went on to listen to their next 3 albums they are just that good
Classic
VERY apt album. Saw them perform it the day after and it went off.
Britpop...
This is the craziest album. I get why folks hate it. I get why folks love it. I look at the track listing and think that this is a bit rubbish. I listen to the album and think this is awesome. I'll go four stars.
3.7
Pretty good but not their best. The album is fun to listen to, it has some nice melodies, great energy and catchy hooks, but otherwise it is kinda shallow musically and lyrically. Fav tracks: "Slide Away", "Cigarettes & Alcohol", "Rock 'n' Roll Star", "Live Forever". Your music's shite/5
I was never an Oasis guy when they first came out. I was a metalhead, so these guys were wusses. But I enjoyed this album. Definitely Maybe was Oasis’s debut album, so I had only heard one or two songs before my listen. But after listening to it twice, this will make it into my saved albums list. What struck me was, they reminded me of two bands I love, the Sex Pistols & the underrated hair/blues metal band, Junkyard. The similarities are all have a unique singer and the band plays simple rock ‘n’ roll, though Oasis has more bells and whistles. The standouts for me were Rock ‘n’ Roll Star, Up in the Sky, Digsy’s Diner and my fave was Cigarettes & Alcohol. Maybe I liked C&A because I’m a big Marc Bolan fan and the riff is straight Bolan.
I can also see why it was a popular album 7/10 for me Notable songs: Live Forever, Columbia, Slide Away, and Married with Children. I got really sick of how long the songs were. 5-6 minutes on average
Having mostly known Oasis from Wonderwall (which I have never liked), I was pleasantly surprised. It was good, if not something that personally thrills me.
Great opener. Great close. Some songs in the middle don't do very much but I enjoy the overall sound.
Fav: Married With Children Least Fav: Up In The Sky I was always Team Blur, but I can admit that Oasis had a strong start before they faded out. Many of the songs here are very nostalgic and I appreciate them, but Oasis’ album bloat problem has always existed. None of these songs needed to be 5 minutes
Awesome record for sure. Crazy that it came at their recent reunion. I think this is is my favorite overall record by them. A great example of 90's alternative brit rock.
Solid track after track
Good stuff. Oasis hit at the right time in my life, and I can go back to that well because the quality endures. The raw sound on this one stands out, and I still enjoy a spin 30+ years later.
great brit pop, easy to listen to
MORE oasis?? Actually it kinda slaps
Solid album. A little annoyed with the lead's singing voice, but I could push past it with this project.
Nice timely blast from the past.
It’s another album that works better out of its context.
This makes me so nostalgic even though I was 6 months old when this album was released; it makes me crave for simpler times and non demonic music. Innocence has been lost since 2001. "I hate the books you read and all your friends. Your music's shite, it keeps me up all night. Goodbye, I'm going home." 4.5/5
I can see the hype, it was a good album!
Gallagher has one vocal flourish in his toolbox, but boy does he get some mileage out of it
Still a great catchy album, but they are not a great band
Though not as coherent as ‘What’s the Story Morning Glory’ Oasis’ debut is energetic and full of memorable songs, but mostly Live Forever. This band came on the scene knowing exactly who they were. Their sound is developed (by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles) and their delivery is spot on. 4⭐️
Yeah. Cool. Quite.
There were some brilliant tunes here, like "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Rock 'n' Roll Star," but a couple of songs were disappointing.
Eye opening album as id only ever heard the one oasis song, you know the one, very enjoyable album overall pleasantly surprised. 8/10 Fav's : columbia, supersonic, bring it down Least fav: rock n roll star
A really solid album. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Great debut
I’m shocked. This actually rocked. Easy 4 stars. Really really liked this. So British. Great melodies. I may listen to these guys often.
The sum of all parts are great. I like the next two albums better, but that comes down to taste. I'd give this album 4.5 stars if i could
Classic from the King of the Mancs
Long time no hear. The 90s where did they go. The darling Gallagher bros, tabloid press darlings, and crew. Britpop and lad culture. If nostalgia has a championship in music they are right up there at the top of the league at the moment. For that reason wanted to put this back on and say well that was shit wasn’t it. But to be fair it’s not, yes still think Liams delivery is the weakest part, especially when he does that trademark drawing out of words, but that biggest cock in the room, I wanna be Lennon was his shtick. It’s good British rock n roll with it’s influences firmly front and centre, which is fine, to carry on the sport analogy, it isn’t playing in the same league but it’s the same sport. Good rock album, far from the best but still good. 4 Star
This is my era of rock/alternative music. Never heard Oasis's first album before; it's really solid. Good tracks on here that sound quintessentially like Oasis. I really liked Supersonic, Columbia, and Slide Away.
Listened Before? Y This was in my collection back in the day. I prefer this to their second record overall since they were more grungy and kept it more upbeat. That being said, Oasis is no longer on my radar. It's a well-made record but they're just not my style anymore. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Live Forever
This brought Brit Pop to the States it meshed well with the grunge/alternative scene taking pop music by storm. The fact that they were rockers of the old ilk didn’t hurt.
Cool album, good songs and set the tone for what was to come. Who knew 4 scallies from Manchester (with a fetish for the Beatles) would go on to influence so many bands?!? Still like What’s the story more, but this is still top drawer
John’s vocals are sooo good here and George and Paul harmonizing is just iconic. The drummer.
Good example of britpop, very overplayed
3.75
I really enjoyed this album, it’s been decades since I heard it last but it’s still an outstanding record.
Better than I thought. Pretty basic songs but enough energy to keep it interesting.
yup
Oasis = good.
kinda iconic
Nice
Pretty good, better than I expected
Good
I felt really conflicted about this because when it’s good - “Live Forever”, “Supersonic”, “Slide Away” - it’s perfect. When it’s not, like with “Digsy’s Diner”, it’s just a bit forgettable. A solid 4* album, but not the 5* I assumed it would be when listening back as an adult.
An album I owned as a teenager, and which I'm pretty sure I last listened to in the 90s. It turns out I have the same issue with it now that I did then - Noel has a significantly less annoying voice than Liam, so let Liam fart around with a tambourine or something like Bez from Happy Mondays, and I'd enjoy it more. But clearly Oasis, and this album in particular, did perfectly fine without my advice. A band who expertly stole the best bit of lots of other artists who came before them (which sounds like an insult, but it's really not). It's very obvious why this made Oasis stars, not least that it oozes confidence. 4/5
I like Oasis just fine and this album has some great songs on it. But once again, we have already reviewed a similar work by the same artist. "What's the Story (Morning Glory)" is the better record and adding this one is just redundant.
They're just so good. Really dumb, but damn do I enjoy the stupidity.
I hate this album but I get it.
Another album I really enjoyed! Good to listen to the whole album together as opposed to individual songs!
Its good album
Sean is crazy. All rock bands are composed primarily of gimmicks if you break them down far enough. And Oasis's gimmick is basically being sing-songy and melodic while still rocking pretty hard, which is good enough for me. This is without question one of the boldest and most consistently high quality rock debuts of the 90s. Live forever and supersonic both rock. This is probably a 5 for me but going to deduct one star because 'ShakerMaker' is literally the same melody as Coca-Cola's 'I'd like to teach the world to sing' and that resonance might subtly imply that there isn't a huge difference between a great rock song and a commercial jingle used to sell poison to children, and that fact makes the love of rock music I've built a part of my identity on feel sort of tawdry and pathetic if I think about it too much. Rock and Roll!
We finally get to Oasis! 😂 I love this album in the same way I cherish early 60s music. Its cheesy, but it makes you feel like a young punk just trying to party and have fun with the odds stacked against you (and you feel like bitchin about it too). This abum IS rockin’ (Jack Black voice)! Overall, there is a ton of copying and derivative guitar lines. Im not impressed with any of that, but this album is far more than the sum of its parts. This is brit rock at damn near its best The second half of the album (especially the last 4 tracks) is the best material. Digsys dinner sounds like something out of a Fratellas album 10 years before they existed 😂 There are better Oasis albums, but im happy this was here
Fuck, another Brit Pop. Wait, it’s THE Brit Pop album. Rock and Roll Star, SuperSonic, Cigs, Slide Away.
8/10 Guitarras eternas, voz agridulce y reconfortante
Rough around the edges. Expected fora debut.
It was nice, it was somehow new and it defenetely started teh cool Britania, in addition it aged quite well.
A brash, confident debut. Has the sound of a band convinced they’re going to change the world...and for a while, they did.
It sounded like a mix of The Strokes, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and a touch of Radiohead debut album Pablo Honey. I enjoyed it but it was nothing too too crazy. My favourite songs were Supersonic, Slide Away and Married with Children.
353/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Another band that I refused to listen to in the 90's but somehow has wormed it's way into my ears over time. Being bored cycling through Netflix one night led me to the Supersonic documentary. Maybe that gave me some appreciation for the band, but honestly, some of these tunes are hard to deny. That guitar sound is so crisp, and that whiny bitch Liam's voice gets under your skin and somehow is infectious. Though not as polished as Morning Glory, I like this one just as well. It's all so. very. 90's.
Pleasantly surprised. Way more rock than I expected. Very enjoyable.
I vibe with oasis
I vibe with oasis hard, one of like 3 albums of theirs worth it.
Not as good as the followup, but still damn good Britpop. 4/5
quite good, like the vibe, rock n roll but also indie, will bee adding to playlist
Probably in the low 4’s good album non the less
Rating: 4/5 | Favorite Track: Supersonic --- This was my first real introduction to Britpop and found myself quite pleasantly surprised with this album. I will definitely have to explore more from this genre.
Oasis was everywhere when I was younger, but I didn’t really get into them until the past couple of years — and Definitely Maybe was a great place to start. For a debut album, it’s solid from front to back. The Gallagher brothers were clearly onto something early on — full of swagger, hooks, and that raw Britpop energy. You can feel the attitude in every track, and honestly, it holds up really well. Favorite song: "Cigarettes & Alcohol"
An amazing piece of rock n roll history.
Love this album, my favorite Oasis.
This album drips swagger. Boisterous but stupid. Really nailed the post Beatles sound, with a nice touch of The Kinks. Married with Children the only lowlight.
Good album, nice old school vibes, quite a few songs in the list that I liked, standouts were Supersonic, Rock 'n' Roll Star and Up in the Sky. Honestly reminds me of skater music, which playing Tony Hawk games, definitely took me on a trip down memory lane. My one gripe is the song length, very long songs. Only because I do not typically listen to this type of music on a regular basis.
My first listen. Heard of Oasis before. Gets better with every listen. Was very meh when I first put it on, but it grew on me throughout the first listen and I had to go again. Standouts - Bring it on down & Up in the sky
Good fun! live forever and slide away my favs, whole album has a distinct sound and it doesn't differ away from. luckily, it's a good sound. Very random closing song that was the highlight of the album.
I was obsessed with this one in the 90s. It still holds up.
No bad songs, a couple that I liked a lot. I'm not surprised they went on to get as big as they did
🎧: 15/04/2025
This is a solid debut album. It's nothing unique, but Liam's voice and recognizable singing style are present, which one will later associate with Oasis. Production is flat but not bad overall.
Hard to be objective about an album I've listened to probably 100 times.
Liam Gallagher looked in the mirror before recording this and said “By God, I will pronounce every word on this album like no one has ever pronounced it before.” Shoutout to lasaaaaaaagneeaahhh. This was not as good as What’s The Story but you could tell they were getting there. 3.5
The heavier songs on this album are sick. It’s no what’s the story morning glory but it’s close
Most of the songs are 1 min too long and the lyrics sounds like they were written by a 7th grader but that’s really a part of the charm of the album. Just a pure rock and roll album before they got too big and self important. I think cigarettes and alcohol is my favourite track, but there are 5 or 6 bangers.
3.9 I mean the songs are pretty standard rock and roll fare but the more I listen to Oasis the more I think they pull it off better than most. Back half of the Album was stong
Maybe Definitely
Oasis is okay. Never listened to one of their albums before. I really like their rocking guitar sound. This is an example of a band that has everything "right". They check all the boxes for what I want in music except it just doesn't move me the way that other bands do. I just kind of feel like I'm going through the motions with this band's songs. They don't stir me I guess but I can't point to anything particular that I don't like about it. It just tastes like alot of red food coloring and MSG to me. But still... it's way better than Elvis Costello.
The Gallaghers sound like insufferable children. Gawd. Here's to their 2025 tour being drama-free! Perhaps their old wounds and rivalries have finally healed. We shall see. That aside, the album itself is what's really at hand. I found it bright and catchy and pretty rockin'. It was nothing groundbreakingly deep, but I really enjoyed it for what it was. I found the whole thing very lovable and liked pretty much every song.
Very good album. Love Supersonic and Luve Forever
Classic album owned and heard may times. A sound track to my Adolencense
Great album, gives an early version of Favorite worst nightmare. Really liked this
Oh hey, this is a pretty fun vibe. Nice and rocky musicality, and the lyrics are pretty fun and inventive.
Catchy, fun, good listen
Pretty good. Not as many big hits as their next album but still quite solid
One of the strongest debuts of all time.
A good reminder that some of the songs I remembered 🙂
👍
I might have had this CD when I was younger. I may rank it higher because of it.
There's a lot of quality songwriting incorporating everything from rock, to blues, to grunge, and even some jazz melodies. The album is brought down by two factors. First, almost every track is about a minute too long - the band doesn't seem to know how to end a song. Second, Cigarettes and Alcohol is a blatant rip-off of T-Rex's hit song "Bang a Gong". It's almost a carbon copy and should not be on the album. 3.5/5.0: Very Good.
It was aicht
4 - I was expecting more. I can't hate them tbh but listening to it, I do feel like they are very one dimensional. Some bangers though
Another classic. I’ve listened to this many times, through the years I have started to see some of its flaws and I don’t think every moment here is a work of genius but it is definitely still definitely maybe
Certified classic
This was definitely maybe a 4. Some redundancy in their songs, but I liked it.
I think the only Oasis track I really knew was Wonderwall. I enjoyed this album. Every song kind of sounded the same, so can't be 5 stars for that reason alone, but it was a fun listen.
I think if I heard this today for the first time, I might be unimpressed, but I remember the effect it had when I first heard it. Some of the tracks are very much filler (e.g. Digsy's Diner, Slide Away, Married With Children), but the likes of Supersonic, Shakermaker, and Live Forever had a huge impact on me. Four stars for that.
I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would
I had this on cassette back in the day along with Parklife and some US rock stuff like R.E.M. and Nirvana. Oasis peaked with this and I had lost interest by Be Here Now, but as a first record encapsulating the 90s, this still stands up. Took off a mark for the novelty song about lasagne though.
Rock and roll classic
first album i ever done heard 🗣️ tuff tuff tuff their best album easily
Simpelthen bare bundsolidt engelsk rock - det holder
Classic 90s rock. Nostalgia. Could be on the soundtrack of Clueless.
fire
In classic Oasis fashion, this isn't super exciting but it is easy to listen to. Overall, an enjoyable album even if it isn't super technical or advanced.
Writing music with your brother so you can explore the hard questions in life. Like, “how does it feel when you’re inside of me?”
Rock 'n' roll star, cigarettes and alcohol, and slide away were my favourites. Overall I think the album is pretty good but not something I'd listen to every day.
4.6/5 i've heard a few songs off this album but this was the first time i listened to it in full and i loved it! so many bangers through and through! i really, really enjoyed Slide Away. long term tho, i think it would be a bit exhausting to listen to. it’s loud, distorted and noisy. but i was in the right mood for it today and really enjoyed it. i even listened to the morning glory album straight after (which i thiiink i like better?!). i know that the way they sing is kind of their thing but i really enjoyed the songs where the voices were more “normal”. then again, LASAAAAANNYYYYAAAA is quite fun haha. in other words; i need to listen to this a few more times to see how i continue to get on with it xD i’ll rate it a weak 5. edit: it’s going down to a 4 after having gone back to it today. solid album still but not a 5 to me.
Oasis - Definitely Maybe First time hearing their music other than Wonderwall, and it's way better than I expected. Almost every song here are highlights, really consistent all throughout with it's great riffs and hooks that this album offers. Overall, this is really great! 1.- Rock 'N' Roll Star = 9/10 2.- Shakermaker = 9/10 3.- Live Forever = 9/10 4.- Up In The Sky = 8/10 5.- Columbia = 10/10 6.- Supersonic = 8/10 7.- Bring It On Down = 9/10 8.- Cigarettes & Alcohol = 8/10 9.- Digsy's Dinner = 7/10 10.- Slide Away = 10/10 11.- Married With Children = 9/10 FINAL SCORE: 8.7/10
After initially not loving this and it's sonic mush recording, I was pummeled into submission by a wall of guitars and hooks. I didn't see it coming
Love Forever is s tier. Great fun modern era rock n roll
Nothing wrong with Oasis.
Pretty good Live forever is a heater
Strong album
2000s soft rock. No real chart toppers in this album but I really like mood of the whole album.
This album is a bitter sweet.
Here's the thing, I quite like Oasis. I have a copy of (What's The Story) Morning Glory and spent a lot of time listening to it. I moved to Manchester in April 1996 and it was the soundtrack of that first summer, Euro 96, Hacienda (which was in it's final stages) etc ... Christ, I sound like Ron Manager ... "jumpers for goalposts, experience replica shirts, isn't it, mmmm?" Anyway, this is a good album, but not as good as the follow up. I'm going with 4 stars!
A lot more enjoyable than What's the Story. Just fun, digestible britpop. They're still kind of annoying, though.
It doesn't reach the same heights as 'What's the Story', but this is a great debut. Their sound and attitude is fully formed and assured.
Just a solid all around album. Final track is the perfect outro.
Like very few groups, Oasis seemed to emerge fully formed with this debut album, and only got better on the efforts that followed! It now seems sort of inevitable that something this good could only exist for a very limited time.
