Reviews (page 2 of 8)

Undeniably a landmark in vocal jazz and pop balladry, but listening to it straight through can feel like being trapped in a smoky lounge where time stands still—and not always in a good way. The album’s mood is consistent to a fault: melancholy, introspective, and drenched in late-night loneliness. While that emotional cohesion is often praised, it also means that many of the tracks blur together. The arrangements, though lush and tasteful, rarely deviate from the slow, string-heavy formula. After a few songs, you start to wonder if the needle’s stuck. Sinatra’s voice, of course, is pure croon—smooth, intimate, and technically flawless. But that same velvet tone becomes almost soporific over the course of 16 tracks. There’s little dynamic range, either emotionally or musically, which makes the album feel more like a mood piece than a collection of distinct songs. It’s a masterclass in atmosphere, but one that risks monotony. If you’re not already nursing a heartbreak or sipping bourbon in the dark, it might not hit quite as hard.

Sounds like Christmas music (not a fan). Would work well in cheap American romcoms (which I also don't like) though, or in anything "family friendly" Disney. The best thing about this album is that it does not contain "My Way" or "Singing in the Rain". OK - I do get the appeal. If you are into crooners this is probably really good, it has a very recognisable sound. Sinatra can sing (like many others) but I find his voice lacking in character, it's just too plain. And singing is his sole merit because he hasn't written the songs and doesn't play an instrument. He's strictly a singer and a bit boring one. One star up from a 1* because the album has a certain consistency and a "theme" (even if heartbreak is a bit of a a lame one). A 2* may sound harsh "for Sinatra" but I really think this is nothing special, musically. It's just old, but that doesn't get extra points for me because much older and better music exists.

Afternoon nap music, wasn’t really feeling the vibe.

This is the album equivalent of watching paint dry. Scientists should study this to figure out the secret of time manipulation. Apparently it's only 49 minutes long but I'm certain that I was listening to this for a week. By day 3, everything sounded the same. I was sure that I'd accidentally put one song on repeat, but no. By day 6, I'd given up all hope of ever seeing the other side. I'd accepted that my life would forever consist of listening to this album. At the end of day 7, when the sweet release of silence came, I emerged from my audio prison and blinked into the sunlight. All I wanted to do was hug my family. I had an overwhelming appreciation for how Andy Dufresne felt when he crawled out of the sewerage pipe and stood in the rain in The Shawshank Redemption. There's no denying that Frank has a great voice, he just put it to use in the most bafflingly boring and unenjoyable way possible.

I know music has changed so much since this album was recorded but it’s the first time I’ve not been able to finish the album. Simply unlistenable.

This is awful. I can't believe people used to like this music. It's sad, depressing and incredibly boring. Id give it Zero stars if I could. I got through it but barely.

I fucking hate Frank Sinatra.

This guy sucks

To crooney..... just too damn crooney. Shave half an hour off and I might have enjoyed it.

With 'In the Wee Small Hours' (1955) Frank Sinatra changed the purpose of the LP from a collection of singles into an artform that could stand next to literature and not appear out of place. The first concept album since 1940 when Woody Gutherie released 'Dust Bowl Ballads' - 'In the Wee Small Hours' found the Chairman singing about lost love, self-doubt, empty homes, lonely streets, despair and even a little bit of hope for a better tomorrow if you listen close enough. If not Sinatra's best album (it very much is for my money) certainly his most vulnerable and stark. A masterpiece that was ground zero for modern music- 'In the Wee Small Hours' changed everything and set the stage for Sinatra's brilliant second act of a career with very few equals. Essential in all ways imaginable and unimaginable.

Frank, sos el amor de mi vidaaaaaaa

First time listening to Frank outside of a Christmas scenario. Love it.

"In the Wee Small Hours" is often cited as the first true "concept album". Whilst I do not quite go along with that definition, there is no denying that all of the tracks are carefully selected around a single unifying theme. Recorded during a turbulent period in Sinatra's life - following his painful separation from Ava Gardner and, prior to that, his divorce from his first wife, Nancy Barbato - the album perfectly captures an atmosphere of loneliness, introspection, regret, and late-night longing. Whenever I see "Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra" on an album, I am immediately interested and intrigued; it acts as an absolute stamp of quality. His arrangements on this record move away from the swing era's usual brassiness, opting instead for muted strings, celesta, and woodwinds that mirror the mood of Sinatra's vocals. The orchestration is deeply emotive and stunningly beautiful. Debates about its status as a concept album aside, this release successfully transitioned the long-playing record (LP) from a mere collection of singles into a cohesive body of work. Sinatra’s performance is superb; he communicates the raw pain behind the words and set an entirely new standard for popular vocalists. Whilst there are a number of first-class performances across the tracks, the standout for me is 'Last Night When We Were Young'. In the Wee Small Hours remains a definitive document of melancholy, best listened to exactly as the title suggests. It is certainly not an album for casual listening. Personally, I have to be in the right frame of mind to sit with this record from start to finish. However, when the mood strikes, it hits the spot perfectly. I was in that very mood today. Five stars. Side 1 1 "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" (5/5) 2 "Mood Indigo" (5/5) 3 "Glad to Be Unhappy" (5/5) 4 "I Get Along Without You Very Well" (5/5) 5 "Deep in a Dream" (4/5) 6 "I See Your Face Before Me" (5/5) 7 "Can't We Be Friends?" (4/5) 8 "When Your Lover Has Gone" (4/5) Side 2 1 "What Is This Thing Called Love?" (5/5) 2 "Last Night When We Were Young" (5/5) 3 "I'll Be Around" (5/5) 4 "Ill Wind" (4/5) 5 "It Never Entered My Mind" (5/5) 6 "Dancing on the Ceiling" (5/5) 7 "I'll Never Be the Same" (5/5) 8 "This Love of Mine" (4/5) Total - 75 Average - 4.69 341/1001 183/341 albums reviewed were new to me.

What a beautiful recording. The orchestra, the arrangements, Sinatra.

When I was a teen, Frank released "New York, New York" and it was a huge hit. I felt robbed from a more modern artist, while Frank had had his chance. This album is the heart of the greatness of Frank's vocal talent and Nelson Riddle's orchestral talent. I don't know how many times I've heard this album, but it is not enough. 5/5

It’s Frank, just listen to it. Regularly. You can thank me later.

Can't go wrong with Sinotra

Like rubbing silk on your ears. A real man, drinking 12 hours a day, smoking Luckies constantly, and STILL singing - almost a cappella - with the smoothest voice. This is Frank in his prime and untouchable. Plus 1 because I just know there’s gonna be haters in the reviews and while Frank wouldn’t give a shit what they think, I unfortunately do.

This is Sinatras sad boy era, I want to listen to it again in the fall, on a rainy October morning.

Laughed at the review "Sad boi Sinatra" I really enjoyed it though. Felt like a soundtrack to a film that doesn't exist, only in your head and you can still picture the scenes. Definitely one I'd buy myself.

I can still remember hearing this album for the first time when I was in my 20s 40 years ago and I was spellbound. This is one of the albums that brought him back from his early 50s slump. Its probably the most emotional album I’ve ever heard but I can see why others might not agree. It’s very slow moving and the gorgeous melodies reveal themselves with repeated listens. It takes effort and patience and I believe that’s in short supply nowadays.

my fav

What a voice. This is how I imagine floating on a cloud would sound like Not my favourite of Frank's albums, but still a beautiful one 5 ⭐️

Excellent as always!

yearner mais genre il passe noël tout seul

haunting... the old luster is lush and alive.. heartbreaking, velvety, beautiful. depth to it. truly romantic...

Sinatra and Riddle interpret "The Great American Songbook" through the lens of Frank's broken heart and invent an art form.

Calm voice

This landed the morning after my families annual St. Pat's party...so, I got up and cleaned the house all by myself to this. Basically dooming me to bias it as a perfect album for such an occasion. I love frank anyhow but I am a sucker for crooners.

Precioso

This is the first full Frank Sinatra I listened to. While some of the songs are a bit repetitive it is an amazing album. He sings with such emotion. I can see why he is a legend.

One of the first records I owned. I “borrowed” it from my dad because I loved how dark the album art was. 100% my favorite Frank album.

excellent 5/5

Frank sings about how much love can suck and sounds great doing it.

Thank goodness for this man’s ear infection. I would have been so hooked if I were a young girl in the 50s

One of THE albums that put Frank Sinatra on the map!!

This dude laid pipe

lotta nostalgia here for me

Y'all mind if a white boy catches a vibe?

Precursor dels sadboys amb aquest album. I mira que aqui ni ho havia deixat amb l’Ava. 10/10 siempre en tu barco Francisco <3

One of the best mood albums!

Ohhh say it again Frank.

Perfect!

Já ouvi, amo

holy smokes how come i’ve never took the time to listen to this. this might be the first 10/10 album ive rated and it takes a good amount to be a 10/10. this album is so beautiful, i can describe it as a snowy night in the city with your lover at night. first off, frank sinatras voice is so calming and a classic. the instrumentals is so calm and cozy just like cookies and milk and a fire place in the background crackling. this came out in the 50s!! was there a baby boom back in the 50s bc of thi album?? i listened to this in the wee small hours by the way. but wow man i never felt this way about an album in a good time im glad i listened to this. its so gosh darn calming i want more of this. every song fits perfectly in this album, every song is flawless, there’s not a singular thing wrong with this. to think that this came out in the 50s was outstanding. i love every song on it, can’t choose a favorite one. and you could tell that these songs were made with so much love, it’s made with a lot of love that im feeling loved right now. anyway im obviously giving this a 10/10, reminds me of the old disney films which is a good thing.

So beautiful, so sad.

Set the mood when the weather suddenly changed to cloudy and rainy :) loved every moment

And Nelson Riddle…

One of my favourite musical genre. Sinatra has a magic voice

I liked several songs, but the album was so long…

Perfect morning music.

LOVE IT!

just delightful

OMG just after the first song I am hooked

Fantastic album to start the list (chronologically), beautiful and moving

Fabulous album !

Great album!

Beautiful, poetic...sobbing, crying, throwing up. 10/10 FRANKY BABY

Til å være et menneske som like Frank Sinatra så godt som æ gjør høre æ overraskanes sjelden på han. Det burde æ bli bedre på å gjøre nokka med.

clasic

The title track is a favorite of mine. The whole album was great to listen to today. I was having a stressful day, but somehow this helped me calm down a bit. Beautiful voice, beautiful songs.

What an amazing album

PERFECT!!!!!

Great album, needed for today

A really good album, I liked I Get Along Without You Very Well, Deep In A Dream and What Is This Thing Called Love the most.

So cool.

Great, soothing. Would listen to again

Pretty chill

It felt like magic

Aivan loistavaa tunnelmointia. Oon aina pitänyt Sinatran soundista ja Quincy Jonesin sovitukset kappaleissa on tietenkin mielettömiä.

Classic, very good, typa album Id listen on repeat alone

Cigar and scotch music. Seriously though, a great album by one of the all time greats.

Sad Sinatra is still Sinatra.

Prime Frank.

A legend. Enough said.

I've written on here before of my dad's love of Frank Sinatra. However, it's me that loves this particular record.

9.5/10 Totally underestimated album by Sinatra. Am definitely telling people about this one

A beautiful record full of classic blue eyed heartbreak and pining, unrequited love. It’s hard to find fault with someone as influential and legendary as Frank Sinatra. Not the most well known songs of his, but it’s still an excellent album. I couldn’t imagine ranking anything he’s done any less than 5*.

Like Christmas!

While I prefer "Songs for Swinging Lovers", this album, Sinatra's first with Nelson Riddle arranging, is arguably more consistent in that it holds that melancholy mood throughout. It reinvigorated Sinatra's career and, as one of the first records released on the new 12" vinyl format, allegedly kicked off the album era. Not as much fun as some of the later recordings, it is an album to wallow in, late at night, perhaps with a whisky in hand.

So schön kann Jazz sein. Zarte melancholische kleine Meisterwerke erfreuen meine Ohren. Bisher hatte ich nur Best of... Alben vom Maestro in Solo oder Duets. Jetzt habe ich mir innerhalb von wenigen Wochen 5 seiner Original Alben erworben und höre Sinatra nochmal neu. Und bin begeistert.

love this album

This is one of the first concept albums if you will: A man singing in loneliness about a broken heart. One of Sinatra's best album with lush arrangements.

This might be one of the best albums ever. It's so delightful. I predict I'll be listening to this for many, many years.

Well, I loved this. I don't really have any notes to share. I loved every song, loved the emotion, loved the instrumentation. A true treat.

They say not to judge a book by its cover, but you can judge this album by its art and understand exactly what it is. "In The Wee Small Hours" is a reflection on love and heartbreak, beautifully rendered in melancholy piano and Sinatra's soothing tones. It's the musical equivalent of curling up in front of a warm fire on a cold rainy night. The album as a whole is comfortably blue, each track blurring into the next - it perhaps works best for background listening, but a few tracks stand out; my favorite on this listen being "Mood Indigo." Overall, this album is a wonderful package.

Fantastic voice and swagger! Great songs! 5 stars

Day299 - an album for the broken hearted and melancholy. i’m neither and i loved it

Hab doch alles gehört, mega entschleunigend. Voll geil

I’ve always liked Sinatra. And while I’m not well versed in the vast recording history that is the Sinatraverse, I can put this album on and let it play on repeat all day long.

The earliest album on this list, maybe the first great album? Tough to say. I was amazed that this was 50 minutes and not more like 30 minutes long for being made nearly 70 years ago. It sounds great and these songs are excellent, it's a mood for sure, and really welcome one on a lazy morning.

Absolutely beautiful album, and if I recall correctly one of (if not the first) "concept albums" of all time. Sinatra does many traditional pop/jazz standards in his signature vocal-jazz style. This album seems to have fallen out of favour with a lot of people as time marches on, but I genuinely love it. I love other albums of his more than this one, but it's definitely classic.

Wow, this album is amazing. I'm not a fan of this era's music, for Sinatra for the most part, but this album really is perfect.

Musical dna. Sinatra was pretty much untouchable at the top of his game and coupled with Nelson riddle, nothing expressed American masculinity and art like this at least not until Presley or Chuck. Sinatra is not a singer put in front of the orchestra - he’s a vital part of it, as important to the sound of the orchestra as Sweets Edison or George Van Eps. This is as much to do with his talent - his gift - as it is to do with Riddles arrangements. If this doesn’t move you, something’s wrong. And this isn’t my favourite of those magical Columbia albums - the glory of Songs for Swinging Lovers is my favourite. But this is just incredible. I bask in it, revelling in each note, beat, chord and lyric. Essential listening. 25 stars.

Review Sinatra Yeah this is the full full swoon, the full shot of velvet. Turn it up and chill - whether its a balmy summer at sunset, or a fireplace moment. Its Gold. I really should listen to more Frank. Out his record on the “listen to me” pile, along with a few of his other 5 start ones. So many... Take the best albums of each of these vocal greats from the golden age and you've got a solid 4 or 5 from me. But when it comes ot Ella Fitzgerlanbd Frank Sinatra there is just so much amazing material. How to choose a single definitive best album? And leave room for the other greats Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole, Julie London, Billie Holliday, a Tony or two, so many more including Chet Baker, Shirley Horn, lus the best jazz musicians of the day. And Dorris Day - juts for fun! (who always makes me smile). Did I miss Carmen Macrae, or Etta James ? Then around the turn of the century we got the vocal gifts of Stacey Kent and Madeline Peyroux (overplayed in all the homewares stores) the amazing Gregory Porter, Harry Connick, Melody Gardot, and so many who could spill off Frank, like Vince Jones/Grace Knight (come in spinner) Where is that little CD? I think I have 2 copies....

A great melancholy journey of unrequited love. Some of the songs did start to blend together, and I definitely feel like the album could have been shorter and more concise to really hone itself. But all in all a relaxing and reflective listen that tugs at heart strings. Top tracks: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning, What Is This Thing Called Love, I'll Be Around

Lovely!

Lovely album. Very relaxing and easy to listen to. Great to have on in the background upon an evening.

Great album

Classic 50's...

Someone described this as "middle age Pet Sounds" so good

An all-time great album. The perfect thing for when you have a hangover but still want to listen to music.

**In The Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra: An In-Depth Review** **Introduction** "In The Wee Small Hours" is a seminal album by Frank Sinatra, released in 1955. It stands as one of the earliest examples of a concept album, where the songs are thematically linked and designed to be experienced as a cohesive whole. This album captures Sinatra's emotional depth and musical sophistication, and it remains influential in the landscape of American popular music. **Lyrics** The lyrical content of "In The Wee Small Hours" is primarily focused on themes of loneliness, heartache, and introspection. This aligns with Sinatra's personal life at the time, as he was dealing with the fallout from his tumultuous relationship with Ava Gardner. The lyrics are poignant and raw, often evoking a sense of melancholy and vulnerability. Key tracks like "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning," written by David Mann and Bob Hilliard, and "What Is This Thing Called Love?" by Cole Porter, delve into the complexities of love and loss. The simplicity of the lyrics in "This Love of Mine," co-written by Sinatra himself, is particularly powerful, reflecting a deep personal connection to the material. **Pros of the Lyrics:** - **Emotional Depth:** The lyrics are deeply emotional and reflective, offering a genuine insight into Sinatra's psyche. - **Universal Themes:** The themes of love, loss, and introspection are universal, making the album relatable to a wide audience. - **Cohesive Narrative:** The lyrics across the album create a cohesive narrative that enhances the listening experience. **Cons of the Lyrics:** - **Monotony:** The consistent theme of heartache may feel monotonous to some listeners. - **Era-Specific Language:** Some of the language and references might feel dated to contemporary audiences. **Music** Musically, "In The Wee Small Hours" is a masterclass in orchestration and arrangement. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are lush and sophisticated, perfectly complementing Sinatra's vocal delivery. The use of strings, woodwinds, and subtle brass creates a melancholic yet beautiful soundscape. The album predominantly features ballads, which showcase Sinatra's ability to convey emotion through his phrasing and tone. Songs like "Mood Indigo" and "Glad to Be Unhappy" highlight Riddle's skill in creating arrangements that are both intricate and restrained, allowing Sinatra's voice to take center stage. **Pros of the Music:** - **Expert Arrangements:** Nelson Riddle's arrangements are intricate and sophisticated, enhancing the emotional impact of the songs. - **Vocal Performance:** Sinatra's vocal performance is masterful, characterized by his impeccable phrasing and emotional delivery. - **Cohesive Sound:** The album maintains a cohesive sound throughout, which is crucial for a concept album. **Cons of the Music:** - **Limited Variety:** The predominance of ballads might lead to a lack of musical variety, potentially making the album feel repetitive. - **Slow Tempo:** The slow tempo of most tracks might not appeal to all listeners, particularly those seeking more upbeat music. **Production** The production quality of "In The Wee Small Hours" is notable for its clarity and balance. Recorded at Capitol Studios, the album benefits from the state-of-the-art technology of the time. The mono recording captures the warmth of Sinatra's voice and the richness of the orchestral arrangements. Producer Voyle Gilmore played a crucial role in ensuring the album's polished sound. The meticulous attention to detail in the mixing and mastering processes results in a pristine listening experience, where every nuance of Sinatra's performance and Riddle's arrangements can be appreciated. **Pros of the Production:** - **High Fidelity:** The production quality is exceptional, with a clear and balanced sound. - **Attention to Detail:** The meticulous production process ensures that every element of the music is well-defined. - **Warmth and Intimacy:** The mono recording adds a sense of warmth and intimacy to the album. **Cons of the Production:** - **Mono Recording:** While the mono recording has its charm, some modern listeners might prefer a stereo mix. - **Era Limitations:** Technological limitations of the era might not capture the full dynamic range possible with today's recording technology. **Themes** The overarching theme of "In The Wee Small Hours" is one of melancholy and introspection. The album delves deep into the emotional turmoil associated with love and loss, with Sinatra often portraying a character who is reflective and resigned. Each song contributes to this theme, creating a unified narrative that explores the complexities of human emotions. The night-time setting, implied by the album's title and cover art, further accentuates the introspective nature of the music. **Pros of the Themes:** - **Emotional Resonance:** The themes are deeply emotional and resonate with listeners on a personal level. - **Cohesiveness:** The unified theme creates a cohesive listening experience, making the album feel like a complete work of art. - **Timelessness:** The exploration of love and loss is timeless, ensuring the album's relevance across generations. **Cons of the Themes:** - **Lack of Uplift:** The predominantly melancholic themes might not appeal to listeners seeking more uplifting content. - **Narrow Focus:** The narrow thematic focus might limit the album's appeal to those interested in a broader range of topics. **Influence** "In The Wee Small Hours" has had a profound influence on the development of popular music. It is widely regarded as one of the first concept albums, paving the way for future artists to explore thematic and narrative cohesion in their work. Its impact can be seen in the works of artists like Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and Joni Mitchell, who have all embraced the concept album format. Sinatra's emotional delivery and sophisticated arrangements have also influenced generations of vocalists and musicians. The album's emphasis on introspection and vulnerability set a new standard for emotional expression in popular music. **Pros of the Influence:** - **Pioneering Concept Album:** The album's concept format has inspired countless artists to create thematically cohesive works. - **Vocal and Musical Influence:** Sinatra's vocal style and Riddle's arrangements have had a lasting impact on popular music. - **Cultural Significance:** The album is considered a landmark in the history of American popular music, cementing Sinatra's legacy as an influential artist. **Cons of the Influence:** - **High Expectations:** The album's legendary status might set high expectations that could influence new listeners' perceptions. - **Niche Appeal:** The specific themes and style might have influenced a niche rather than a broad spectrum of music genres. **Conclusion** "In The Wee Small Hours" by Frank Sinatra is a masterful exploration of melancholy and introspection, delivered through exceptional lyrics, sophisticated music, and meticulous production. Its thematic cohesion and emotional depth make it a timeless classic that continues to influence the landscape of popular music. While its narrow focus on heartache and its slow tempo might not appeal to everyone, the album's artistic achievements and cultural significance are undeniable. **Pros:** - Deeply emotional and reflective lyrics - Sophisticated and intricate arrangements by Nelson Riddle - Masterful vocal performance by Sinatra - High production quality with clear and balanced sound - Pioneering influence as one of the first concept albums **Cons:** - Consistent theme of heartache may feel monotonous - Predominance of ballads and slow tempo might lack variety - Mono recording might not appeal to modern listeners - Narrow thematic focus might limit appeal to a broader audience "In The Wee Small Hours" remains a testament to Frank Sinatra's artistry and his ability to convey profound emotion through music. It is a cornerstone of his discography and a significant work in the history of popular music.

July 3, 2024 HL: title track, “Mood Indigo”, “What Is This Thing Called Love”, “I See Your Face Before Me”, “I’ll Be Around” I don’t generally get a kick out of Sinatra’s music. I found the last album hokey (maybe the 2-star rating was too harsh), but THIS tho? Turns out when you replace cheeky 50’s come-ons with rueful meditations on love and loss, I like Frank Sinatra’s voice a lot more. I also friggen love the orchestra ebbing and flowing behind him, but that was also true of Songs For Swingin’ Lovers. Both arrangements are courtesy of Nelson Riddle, whose name I’ll have to look for in other contemporary recordings to this one. Also, I find the whole is greater than the sum of its melancholy parts, as good as the individual songs are.

4.5 up to 5. A beauty to listen to sinatra's voice. Maybe a bit reperitive? In any case, I would listen many more times before dying.

Come on, it is Sinatra.

I have a huge soft spot for Frank Sinatra. His music puts me in mind of so many good memories - my grandfather, swing dancing, monthly Fridays with Frank parties in grad school. This isn’t my favorite album, or my favorite songs, but listening to it is still like getting back in touch with an old friend. I love the soft melancholy, the crooning voice, the orchestration, the mood-setting artwork.

I expected to like this record, but it absolutely blew me away. I've loved Frank Sinatra for years, but never sat down to a start-to-finish on any of his 'classic' records. This record's nearly eighty years old and you can still sense and revisit his heartbreak over Ava Gardner from start to finish. In The Wee Small Hours is a mood and a half.

5/5 Absolutely Beautiful. Love Sinatra and this was elegant.

One of my very favorite albums

Classic Sinatra, and well worth a listen if you’re only familiar with his Greatest Hits like I mostly was. Melancholy vibes mixed with the kind of classic Christmas-y (without it being Christmas, like, at all) nostalgia. Really great.

The OG concept album with Sinatra breaking down crying during recording sessions. What's not to love?

You’d almost want to break up with the love of your life to enjoy this record to its fullest. My grandpa owned 4 versions of In The Wee Small Hours on vinyl. I only own 2… So he’d probably had given it a score of 10, right?

Perfect rainy day vibes

Excellent

One thing I'm always blown away by with Frank's music is the sheer amount of effort it took to produce. Swelling orchestras, big bands, complex arrangements, and capturing the beautiful subtlety in his voice. Combing all of that to create what I'd consider the most nostalgic music ever made must've been no small task. You don't really hear that anymore, and that makes me sad. It feels disrespectful to give this album anything less then 5 stars, even if it's not my favorite from Ol' Blue Eyes.

Sad songs, quite Frankly, have never sounded more cinematic nor more mesmerizing than they do coming from the lips of Sinatra.

Beautifully written and composed. 5/5

A landmark LP that still glimmers in the wee small hours, or any time of day/night. Beautifully produced too, you forget that it's a mono recording because the sound is so full.

Yes! A must have in the library

Immaculate mood, old time magic

Incredible!

How have we only just now hit our first Sinatra album? We hit so many samey new wave and Britpop LPs instead of the original pop star, smh. This is one of the best albums ever AND the prototypical concept album. You can feel the melancholic dread in Frank’s voice as he can tell that his marriage is ending, whether he’s ready or not. each song is a different punch to the gut. A

Perfect. Warm. Beautiful.

Hot fire from Frank. I have this album on vinyl and spin it probably more than anything else in my collection. HOT FUEGO!

Saw the album cover and immediately knew I was about to BOP. Frank Sinatra/adults standard music was my top genre of 2020.. that ate. listened to every song in the background of my work and enjoyed evry one. definitely re-listening

Love this

Beautifully nocturne and pensive.

lovely

This was a delight. Sinatra is such an icon and is so woven into the cultural history that his music comes with a set of pre-conceived notions. I knew the classics and had an image based on the rat pack, stories of mafia connections, womanizing and generally being old school cool with a large slice of misogyny thrown in. However this album really caught me off guard. It's romantic and vulnerable and subtle. The story telling in the lyrics, the lush orchestration and the emotion in his voice blew me away. Plus I read the wiki entry and discovered this was one of the first concept albums and he pioneered this type of album. I'll be listening again and I'll be looking at his discography for more gems rather than the playlist/best of that may have got an occasional play previously.

Love Sinatra. This album is perfect.

What an awesome gem this is. It’s amazing how good it sounds for such an old recording. Great put it on and chill album.

Every time I hear Sinatra sing I’m blown away by how phenomenal he was. I hadn’t heard this particular album before, and it’s not really what I’m into these days, but his raw talent cuts through all that to make this a truly wonderful experience.

I always loved Frank Sinatra! 5 stars

Chilled weekend vibes.

One of my favorite albums

Gives me lots of nostalgia vibes, not because I listened to it as a kid, just the way it is.

Classic old blue eyes. Really enjoyable listen

Wee small hours Consistency of vibe and theme make for a cool moody “concept album”. Nelson Riddle’s arrangements and Sinatra’s voice are so great together. delivery and storytelling is so good. I love a ballad but sometimes after a while it’s harder for a melody to stick with me at a slower tempo. Great album for a very specific mood.

Really classic and perfect recordings of these tunes. Interesting backstory on this record too.

Not my favorite Sinatra but god it’s still so perfect.

HAIKU REVIEW Frank let's us know just what it means to be lonely sad concept album

Classic.

Good grief, does anyone sing like this nowadays? Can anyone sing like this?

Malen mit Musik und Gesang. So fühle ich Frank Sinatras Musik. Zeitlos schön. 5 Sterne.

Fantastic album. May have to give it a re-listen as the tone of the album seems to stir something within me.

Like pouring honey into the ears. How can anyone not appreciate the brilliance of this record.

Min bästa Frank.

All that sweet, sweet sadness... Far from his usual swing adventures, Frank Sinatra had to come to grips with his breakup with Ava Gardner, and he did so with this melancholy masterpiece of a record. The mood is deep autumn, the sad, yet longing songs are mostly from the Great American Songbook, but the arrangements by Nelson Riddle are sublime, and Sinatra's voice is just perfect here. There is a sweet bitterness that's too good to be resisted - like coffee or very dark chocolate. Even the cover art conveys the mood spot on. Whenever you are awake after hours - regretting, mouring, thinking - this is the perfect album for the occasion. An iconic masterpiece. 5/5

I guess I thought I knew Sinatra before listening to this album, and went into it expecting more of that. What I got instead was a wonderfully melancholy, introspective and emotional album. Reading about this album it is considered one of the first concept albums, and I concur with that. I would love to hear this album performed in its entirety.

i listened to this album a lot in my adolescence moping around in a confused slump. lord knows how much i felt it (frank did alright). i was blue. it was subtle at first but i learned how real and raw a feeling could be channeled deep on a silly bit of plastic. the only problem is, sometimes i listen to this record a lot now moping around in a confused slump - so how much of this feeling was pubescant solipsistic self pity - and how much of it was a genuine complete feeling of hopelessness and longing? i have felt every bar of this record so deeply. between riddle and sinatra the arrangements are of unprecedented grace and sophistication. its the mixture of perfect execution with real character from a bygone age of musicians that will never come again. sinatra is unquestionably the greatest singer of the 20th century. i do not expect anyone else to love this record, but those who know they know. i love the fiercely manic spark of hope in dancing on the ceiling. sometimes its not bad to indulge in the imagination. 🦡

not usually my favourite genre but very good

What can I say? It’s Frank and it’s great. This one doesn’t have many super hits but it’s 50 minutes packed with slow ballads and pretty much exactly the type of music that you think of when you think of Frank Sinatra. Even if you’re expecting the vibes, though, it’ll still make you sad but also warm and fuzzy inside the whole time as the lyrics are emotional but the music is comforting. However, I ended up listening to more architecture and morality throughout today than Frank which really surprised me. Something about the synth pop on that album really clicked with me between yesterday and today and even Chloe liked it when I played it over dinner. Since I tend to give 5s to albums I go back to even after I rate it, I want to retroactively give a 5 to that album and let this 5 serve as that 5 as well.

I don’t think I’ve been so charmed while listening to an album about heartbreak.

Lovely

Frank was really in his bag with this one. Every song on this album flowed so perfectly into the next, sometimes i couldn’t even tell if a new song had started. I noticed a lot of the lyrics don’t seem to rhyme but the way Frank portrays his heart break is beautiful. Incredibly refreshing to hear break up songs that are written with a more optimistic and future forward mindset. I feel like my rating of this is slightly skewed as i am coming out of a recent breakup and a lot of these lyrics were very relatable to what i’m feeling currently. I joined this album grind late but this has easily been my favorite so far. Fav songs I Get Along Without You Very Well & Can’t We Be Friends ?

We can kinda thank this album for this entire list because it was one of the first times a major artist specifically chose songs for an album based around a cohesive theme both lyrically and sonically and reimagined the way we view albums. All that aside this album is just a mood from start to finish. The title track immediately sets the scene and allows the rest of the album to take you through the varying feeling and thoughts you have after being heartbroken. The band and Sinatra do a great job of portraying the range of emotions from the frustrated end of “When your lover has gone” to the dreamy “I see your face before me” to the despair of the title track. They also know when to add more emotion to a song by stripping away some of the flares. The smaller backing band on Dancing on the ceiling allows for a more intimate song along with the freely playing Spanish guitar that sounds like a memory of dancing with the one you love. There are a few tracks I wasn’t immediately struck by like Ill wind but I think they serve the narrative well and that song still shows another side of the emotional range of the album by focusing on the feeling of being sick of being sad and just wanting it to all blow away. That one is also cleverly placed cuz if you had any listener fatigue at that point from the consistent theme it’s almost like he’s saying “yeah me too this shit sucks.” Every song on this one serves a unique purpose and Sinatra’s voice ties it all together with an earnestness that brings every story to life. 👍: I see your face before me, dancing on the ceiling, In the wee small hours

Dit kan ik heel goed hebben. De Stem van de man met de Oude Blauwe Ogen, mooie rustige nummers, stemmig orkest, pure melancholie. En daardoor tijdloos. Een van de groten van de 20e eeuw.

Excellent album. One of the first, if not the first, concept albums.

So smooth. Sinatra still sings in his original smooth style, prevalent during his big band era, rather than the later staccato (punchy) cadence he adopted as his voice waned. The choice of songs is marvelous too. Some are sad or full of longing; All give that sense of being alone late at night, walking the streets of NYC.

I often have to get up for a wee in the small hours. My bladder isn't quite what it used to be. I've pissed the bed twice this week due to hurting my knee whilst paragliding and not being fast enough to reach the white bowl in time. The others times I've just pissed in an empty beer bottle and slung it out the window. Last Monday I hit a passer-by with once such bottle, killing her instantly. The body is still there in the street, unmoved and covered with piss. I'm not sure what to do.

maybe not my favourites from Sinatra, but still great

How does anyone come to have a voice like this? The songs are almost immaterial, it's like having liquid honey poured over you.

Frank is sad. 5

Echt heerlijk.

It's Frank Sinatra. Beautiful orchestra, great voice. A little melancholy, gotta be in the right mood for it all.

sinatra makes me sad :(

Frank's voice is unmistakable, I've never heard an album from him though, just collection's. This is pretty special.

🌞 favourite song: In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning & all of them 🌜 least favourite song: n/a wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ✨5/5💫

Wow. Had low expectations going in. It's not that I dislike Sinatra, but often his music isn't for me. But man, the first song pulled me right in from the get go. Even when he's singing about heartbreak, there's something comfy about his voice and the music. It all comes together and covers you like a warm blanket. One of the first concept albums, and even if the concept gets a little tired by the end, it's still great.

The album showcased stories about unrequited love, the singer shared his view of life along with his feelings without any resent. Easy to relate to.

Genius. Pour me another whiskey

Very appeasing album. Full listen without noticing the end - very smooth

Ohhhh Frankie Sinatra

Love his voice and the gorgeous, melancholy instrumentation here. It's cool to hear a vaguely conceptual album from the 50s, which seems incredibly uncommon. Love it.

This is a classic. Every track is such a mood. I really enjoyed listening to this one, and added it to a list I'll listen to whenever I want to relax

One of the first concept albums, and one of my personal favorites. Perfect for those late, lonely nights.

Absolutely essential listening. It's the work that not only birthed the concept album, but the concept of the album itself, as a cohesive piece of art. It also re-ignited Sinatra's career, and formed the basis for the break up album. I love albums that capture a time and place, and for me this is a late-night, rainy-day, drinking-alone-in-a-city album, and I love it. Maybe a bit long, but it works well as a background piece you can dip your attention in and out of at will. 27/10/22

Romance is dead and it died with Old Blue Eyes.

This is gorgeous - every second of it

The first album on the 1001 list. It’s a fitting start. Obviously a dated sound but the greatness comes through.

2/2 sad franks

Sometimes, doing this generator highlights why some artists are so revered. This is one of those cases. From a beautiful delivery to the sturdy concept aesthetic, I really found this album stands out.

This is, hands down, my favorite Sinatra record to date. Gone is the swagger and ego of the King of Croon. Instead, we're presented with an image of a tender hearted, big-feels lover. The lyrics are beautiful and the delivery is, unsurprisingly, flawless. The musical arrangements are stark and minimal, perfectly complimenting the moody vocals. I have no complaints here. "In the Wee Small Hours" is a very specific vibe and I'm here for it.

A sound like the feeling of eating a good meal while sitting in a Cafe off the Mediterranean. A chill creeping down my spine with an urgency to absorb the beauty of the moment before it passes. I'm not mad at people thinking I like jazz lol

I channel my inner 1950s teenage girl for this listen. For some reason I don’t play Frank that often. Whenever I do though I absolutely love his music and feel like I could listen to it all day. This album is no exception. His voice just hits home on so many levels. Emotionally, you can connect with the simple subject matter on each song. Usually they’re about love, or lost love but not always. Intellectually, I can appreciate his delivery. Frank’s versions of songs that I already know like “Mood Indigo” and “Can’t we be Friends? ” are so different as to make them totally his own. The arrangements of the orchestration on his music are prefect for his voice too.

Another excellent Sunday album.

Wow, this was gorgeous. I've always loved the brash and campy '60s Sinatra, but I forget that there was really something beautiful about his work for all those years before that. A man with an amazing voice singing sublime torch songs to Nelson Riddle's orchestra. Wonderful. This was truly like buttah.

There’s just something so magical about Frank Sinatra songs. It’s probably just the orchestral aspects of each song, but both his voice and the band come together to create music that feels as if it could wash all your problems away. This album in particular perpetuates that relaxed feeling, which makes it a joy to listen to. Favorite track: Glad to be Unhappy

I am a fan of this Sinatra period. I did not love the earlier big-band era, but the worn, lonely Sinatra always worked for me. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are spectacular.

Let's say you get dumped by the love of your life. You can deal with it in the healthy, boring way, nobody's gonna judge you for that. By all means take care of yourself, you do you. My way is a little different though. Get yourself a bottle of Jack Daniel's and a couple of packs of Camel Straights and put on this album ("Sings for Only The Lonely" will work too) and get good and drunk while chain smoking, you'll eventually feel better the next day.

Damn Frankie

A classic! Sinatra's voice is wonderful! I already knew some songs but never listened this album entirely. What a crime. It truly deserves the spot on this list. Favorite tracks: * In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning * I'll Be Around * This Love Of Mine

Funnily I listened to this album just last week. One of the best albums for the end of the night.

“At the height of his powers” is a hackneyed phrase but it must’ve been invented for this album.

9/10 frank sinatras a total asshole but this was a really nice album, production is incredible and I want to give full credit to the talented people who actually wrote these songs

Classic

In the wee small hours slušan ovo i uff, Sinatra me uvik asocira na toliko toga... osjećaj Božića, crno-bilog filma, sporog plesa u lepršavoj haljini, pucketanje vatre sa komina, gramofonske ploče, sviranje klavira u zatamnjenom baru, a povrh svega, njegov glas!! vječni klasik

Opuštajuće. Divan glas. Uvik se vraćan ovom albumu pa je možda i navika, al briga me 💛

One of the best albums ever made, great stuff

Le meilleur album de l'année 1955 je n'ai pas peur de le dire

genieten. Meer heb je niet nodig, buiten een haard en een boek.

Classic depressief album. 5 - i'm in my joker era

not the greatest collection of tunes, but with frank's voice he could just narrate a bible and it would be amazing

Sinatra at his absolute peak. This along with Sings for Only the Lonely are ssns pareil. 5 🌟

I really liked this album for some reason. Vibe was right for the time and place

World class

Frank's best era. This album was the first concept that he made and would continue to follow the format. This album was the first pressed 12" LP. From an artistic standpoint, this is some of the best Sinatra songs recorded. If you're in a melancholy mood, listen to this album.

Legendary

great frank!

Melancholy off the scale, great vocals and sublime arrangements.

Ellie- makes me feel I'm bathing chocolate So wholesome and Christmassy

A* loved it

Such a great album

Not first time listening: 16/16 songs liked Who hurt you Frank? This is second to "Song For Swingin Dancers" but it's a very close second. Such sadness and loneliness that I can relate to. Also bias love to Frank Sinatra. 2 songs saved

Ah, Frank. Hijodetureputamadre.

Quelque chose que j’adore dans ce genre de musique. Tellement beau! C’est intemporelle, la voix, les arrangements, tout est parfait! 5*

This might be my favorite album.

Well it's Frank Sinatra. Crooning orchestral songs of lost and unrequited love. Still great for relaxed background music.

Some great early pop there. I’ll happily play it to impress a significant other (I’m still single).

Mellow, cool, nostalgic, calming - soothing to my nerves on a workday.

Gostoso no começo e depois fica ok

The original breakup album, sung by one of the greatest, who got dumped by one of the hottest. An album worthy of this list.

I appreciate that this process has taught me the difference between the softer more innovative early 50s Sinatra and the brasher glib later 60s version that I feel more familiar with.

Although this is a really old album, it was great to leave it in the background. There isn't anything too exciting, and it's mostly pretty similar, but it's nice just having it playing while you're doing other stuff.

Frank is a great singer and this album has some great songs with wonderful musucal arrangements. However the running theme of songs of lost, questioning and loneliness make it a special time listen.

Couldn't distinguish one song from another, but so warm and velvety

Funny this comes up a few weeks after getting the new Tone Poet reissue on vinyl. Very good, have to be in the mood for it, though.

Hard to beat the chairman.

Easy listening

It was really good for that genre

Perfect Sunday morning tunes

What Seth McFarlane thinks he sounds like on a mid episode of family guy

its frank sinatra man come on

reminds me of all the grandmothers.

My first exposure to Sinatra was actually through Songs For Swinging Lovers, so going back to this one which is markedly more depressed and isolated is sorta darkly funny. Also hey, the first album in the book! Only took 4 months.

Helt speciel vibe, ret fantastisk.

Вряд-ли я смогу выдавить из себя много слов обозревая этот альбом. Классическая работа Синатры, множество приятных песен, несколько меланхоличных и ностальгических.

Franky baby is well regarded for a reason. he's so sad. what a sad little fellow.

Its sinatra

I actually listened to this album for the second time, this is how I described it "хуйня однообразная". But now I am less critical about it. It is good for 1955

I usually don't consider myself a huge Sinatra fan but this album was excellent. To me the cheese I usually associate with him was not on this album. It felt genuine, subtle and perfectly executed. Certainly not an everyday thing but I will definitely remember this album and come back to it when I'm in the mood.

one of his best

It's earned a place on the list. It might be the first concept album ever created and Sinatra's voice is outstanding. It does get slightly monotoneous at points but that shouldn't overshadow what is an album full of moody heartbroken highlights.

This is a solid choice for a list that feels very light on albums recorded pre-1965 and far too heavy on those that came out post-1990.

The only way to produce bangers is to have marital issues to induce enough raw sadness and anger to make music

What a pleasant surprise. It not only has the historical significance of being considered one of the first ever albums in the concept we cherish today, but the songs are moody and awesome.

Really nice listening.

It’s all rather twee now, but it’s easy to see why he's had popular and lasting appeal.

This is exceedingly beautiful music, and it's a classic for a reason. The story of heartbreak in this album is palpable. That being said, I do feel it could have been slightly shortened.

Such an Iconic and nostalgic voice. Sinatras music isn't something I listen to daily or even weekly its still something I love listening to when it comes on. Tis album doesn't have any of my favorite songs from him but I started playing it and suddenly I had listened through the whole thing. No one song stood out but all of them were really soothing and good.

different album, same complaint. individually great songs but too much for a single listening session

Very enjoyable but not his best, just a bit on the slow side.

The quality of this is very good but it’s super mellow.

para los que anhelan de verdad

Man, I love how beautiful these old album covers were. Works of art all of them. Love the musical arrangements on here and Frank's voice (obviously). Really sounds like late night heartbreak.

Nice breath of fresh air in the 1001 mix. Just what I needed this morning.

oh yes, finally i get to feel what sinatra felt. (its a reference to the lyric of "when do i get to sing 'my way'" by famous synthpop duo sparks: "So when do I get to sing "My Way"/When do I get to feel like Sinatra felt") and the feeling's pretty. sad that im not listening to it in the night. 4/5

His voice is so smooth and nice to listen to. I love jazz and jazz singing, the instrumentation is very stripped back to make his voice the focal point. I simultaneously understand that and wish there was more hot/complex jazz in places. A lot of the songs don't particularly stand out, though I do love sadboy anthems. Somewhere between 3 and 4 for me.

I am amazed by how smooth and rich his voice sounds, even though the recordings are so old. Some me some good ole frank

Absolute legend that

8.5/10

This has some great moments but wow are these arrangements dated.

Better than Coldplay

This list needs a bit more jazz. I enjoyed this, it also made me discover Sinatra’s deeper cuts

A great voice with impeccable timing. Sad songs with cool if dated arrangements. Probably not his best. But still interesting and entertaining.

A gem from the Chairman of the Board.

Franky does this style really really well. What did I expect? Love these songs. Kind of a sad, heartbreaky tone most of the time, but I don't mind it. The jazz instrumentals are on point, and Frank's voice is amazing. What can I say frank you've done it again.

A perfectly-named album. It was really nice listening to this at the end of my night. Sinatra is downtrodden as can be, but making the most of it by looking back on loves lost. While my favorite track was probably "When Your Lover Has Gone", the middle run of song from track 6-10 really hit a sweet spot. The way "Last Night When We Were Young" crescendos in both instrumentation and in Sinatra's delivery made it another standout track. I might be victim to a listening experience that is perfectly timed as I mentioned before, but I think this is a soft 4/5. Frank Sinatra's signature ease-of-delivery vocals are tailor-made for a project like this. Full of noire-ridden yearning, disappointment, and romantic helplessness. Yet somehow he still retains a cozy, faint glimmer of hope amongst the doom and gloom. It's like you can hear him throwing his coat over his shoulder and staring at the concrete, kicking rocks on the dim walk home

Smooth sinatra

Frankie’s got some pipes

4.5. Classic Sinatra. Doesn’t have too many of his best known songs, but they’re all good.

Hermoso. Me sentí en un sueño

This album was fantastic. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are as much a feature as Sinatra's vocals. The guy (Riddle) was a beast of an arranger and it shows.

Silly Smooth

I don't think a single track gripped me in a way I was expecting, however the album as a whole was beautiful. It's incredibly easy listening, and Frank's voice sounds so amazing on every track. Really really enjoyed this.

Very enjoyable - Sinatra is great

Admittedly, I thought this might be a bit of a slog to get through. And whilst I did get a bit tired by the very end of the album, I hugely enjoyed most of it. The lyrics are just beautiful, a gorgeous ode to love and the loss of it. Would love to listen to this on vinyl by a crackling fire. Favourites: In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning I Get Along Without You Very Well When Your Lover Has Gone Last Night When We Were Young

Nice easy listening

misma música calentita pero las letras son mucho más deprimentes, -1 punto :(

Maudlin and Moody. Definitely has an atmosphere and theme. It’s probably more of a nighttime listen, so I think I did it a disservice by listening to it at 10:00 at work but that’s not Frank’s fault. It didn’t have a lot of varied tone but that’s not what it was trying to do. From Musicboard

Frank Sinatra the goat of Christmas feel

feels like some songs off cinderella.

It’s Sinatra, you know what you’re getting! These maybe lean slower than some of his other stuff, though?

so alice in wonderland/magical fairy

beautiful album....a needed palate cleanser after yesterday.....the instrumentals, the voice, the lyrics.....mr. sinatra know yearning ALWAYS !!! moody and melancholic in the perfect way🫶 mood indigo deep in a dream

Version 1 million of someone saying that this album is a beautifully bleak representation of what it feels like to be up before most people in the world, whilst invaded with thoughts of a girl that you have a complicated relationship with. This album is the motive for you to go on that walk.
