Reviews (page 4 of 13)

There’s something powerful about this. I gotta rewatch angel.

I was surprised to learn this album came out in 1995 because in my mind it was very 2002? Anyway, Garbage is an excellent album and we need more angry girl rock; I was delighted to get to listen to this album in full.

oh I am thrilled for this one. When I was a kid I had a long obsession with garbage trucks and when I was given my allocated dial up internet time I would often google things like « garbage » and to my great disappointment instead of information about actual garbage I got the band instead. Anyway since them I have come to love them and « Vow » in particular but I’ve never listened to a full album. I love how crisp everything sounds and the way the sometimes quite heavy guitars play off the melodies and Shirley Manson’s vocals. Vow is probably in my top 5 songs of the 90s and I don’t really think any of the album tracks come close but I did really enjoy listening to it

Feels like something from the Bronze or from Kat Stratford’s car or any other place where you’ll hear angry girl music of the indie rock persuasion which makes me nostalgic for a time I wasn’t really conscious for due to being a baby. But this is fun and angsty and even though, based on my one day of listening, I couldn’t differentiate many of the songs individually, I’d be happy to listen to them again.

헐 내가 너무 좋아할 스타일인데?

Way better than I remember and certainly better than I expected. The beats sound pretty outdated now but the songwriting is sound and it’s an album jam-packed with big tunes. Best: Vow Worst: A Stroke of Luck

Stupid girl was my favorite but the whole album was a vibe

Really good rock album. I enjoyed it

Definitely better on the second listen. Sounded like it belonged on a 90s coming of age movie soundtrack

I liked it!

I thought the instrumentals were very interesting and differed enough to stay interesting throughout. Also loved the vocals for the most part, she sounds like Anna Tsuchiya.

Great 90s album. Also great live

I really enjoyed this album a lot! I’ve had to listen to a lot of albums from the 90s lately, and this one has been one of my favorites so far. My favorite tracks were Vow, Dog New Tricks, and Supervixen.

Pure 90s. I enjoyed the last few songs the most, but I'm only happy when it rains is such a classic song. Was happy I listened to it, but will likely not revisit anytime soon.

I had to laugh at getting this album a few weeks after the beach ball incident. She was foolish for making that comment, but I'll see past it, because I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this music. I only ever recall hearing Stupid Girl before from this album, and the rest was a nice surprise, especially Supervixen, what a cool chord progression. It's on the cusp of a 4/5, and it ultimately made it over.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Female led grunge had a moment in the 90s starting with these guys right here. Capture the sound of the era while being poppy, punky, and fast.

Very reflective of the mid 90s. Grew up when this album came out, familiar with the radio hits but never gave the album a listen. Very well produced sound and album, again leans into the trendy sound of the time. Vow and Supervixen stand out as non hit songs worth a spin .

Drags a bit in the middle, but really good overall.

good, so long I started to hate it by the end. the songs make no sense 😭

Hits a nerve

Awesome covers of great songs

Cracking album. Why did I never buy this when it came out?

356/1089 - I liked it overall. Got a bit too shoegaze-y and out of tune for me on some of the songs but overall liked the dance + alt rock textures. Stupid Girl and Queer stood out to me.

Very solid throughout

kinda shocked by how much i liked it

very cool

Reminds me a lot of Depche mode but with funky guitars. Love this pop

So good I kept going back to re listen to the first half that I never even finished jt

It was giving 2000s romcom and I love it! I have heard “stupid girl” before. Loved the vibe!

Long album, but it has some great songs.

It sounds so 90s I have no option but to love it. Yes Im a sucker for 90s alt music

alt rock is usually a red flag but this was dope as hell. love how bouncy and danceable it all is. and the noisy passages sound incredible, really great album

I was surprised by this album. It wasn't what I was expecting. Courtney Love's vocals were strong and blended well with the style of music.

I have never listened to Garbage before. I grew up only listening to Christian music. I remember we were given material to share with “non Christian” friends about what the Christian bands sounded like to get them to listen to Christian music. It is strange being on the other side of that culture now. Hearing this for the first time, I can hear how much they influenced the bands I grew up listening to. It’s also one of the few albums that I’ve heard where the back end of the album I found more interesting than the first few tracks.

i loved it - don't listen to much like it but i thought it was just really really good. i especially loved a stroke of luck and only happy when it rains. 9/10

actually meha fajny

bardzo fun, 4 gwiazdki

This is so loser core I love it. Typa thing a lesbian in a 2000s movie would have a poster of on her wall. Really enjoying the vibe. It's very me I am the lesbian loser in question. Typa thing I would listen to while getting ready for a night out yk? Like alone in my room smearing black eyeshadow and lacing some docs or something trust the vision. Favourite: Dog New Tricks Least favourite: I genuinely enjoyed all of them

Quite liked, always love a angry female singer

Very enjoyable listening. I’d heard some of the songs on radio but never the whole album. Would definitely listen to this regularly.

there were times the lyrics were a little corny and threw me off but overall there a are some pretty good songs on this album. there are a few skips tho

Lots of great songwriting and some interesting sonic textures. I have slept on this album for so many years!

Such a fun album! I have never taken the time to listen!

Supervixen has hints of Bob Mould. This is a good thing.

This one was nice, cool mood and sound, a bit grungy, electronical, rocky... I am torn between 4 and 5, but lean towards 4... Misses the mark for greatness slightly

“You’re hungry cause you starve While holding back the tears Choking on your smile A fake behind the fear” Honestly, really not what I was expecting. I went into this album with little to no knowledge of Garbage but under the assumption they were some kind of post-punk group. In hindsight something of a foolish notion. What was in store for me felt much more akin to Portishead or Massive Attack. Slow and relaxing but pensive and lyrically interesting. I was transfixed from the opening bar to the last and upon finishing the album felt extremely likely to explore more of Garbage’s discography. The highlight of the album for me was Queer which contends with topics that would have been far before their time upon the album’s release in 1995.

Contains some crackers

This debut by Garbage is a polished alternative rock album that serves as a showcase for the distinct vocal talents of Shirley Manson. To me it feels less like a ground-breaking, influential album and more like a very well-executed pop-rock affair. The album’s strength lies in its mid-tempo and slow-burning grooves. Tracks like "Queer" and "As Heaven Is Wide" succeed through a combination of sequenced grooves, hushed vocals, and standout bass lines. The production is a point of contention for me. Despite Butch Vig’s pedigree, the "sound" of the record can feel surprisingly over-polished and, in places, cluttered. A bit more sonic edge or abrasive "grit" would have provided a welcome contrast to the brightness of the mix. The album oscillates between standard "three-star" fare and genuine moments of excellence where the song-writing and Manson's vocals align. The focal point of this album is Shirley Manson. Her vocals are instantly recognizable, shifting from breathy and hushed to authoritative, and they elevate the material. While the "production clutter" on tracks like "Supervixen" or "Dog New Tricks" can be distracting, the album finds itself perfectly when it strips away the noise. For me "Milk" is the stand out track on the album, demonstrating that the band is at its most powerful when the production stays out of the way of Manson’s voice. Four stars. No. Title 1 "Supervixen" (3/5) 2 "Queer" (4/5) 3 "Only Happy When It Rains" (3/5) 4 "As Heaven Is Wide" (4/5) 5 "Not My Idea" (3/5) 6 "A Stroke of Luck" (4/5) 7 "Vow" (4/5) 8 "Stupid Girl" (5/5) 9 "Dog New Tricks" (3/5) 10 "My Lover's Box" (3/5) 11 "Fix Me Now" (4/5) 12 "Milk" (5/5) Total - 45 Average - 3.75 191/1001 106/191 albums reviewed were new to me.

One of the artists that got me into alternative music back in middle school. Was pleasantly surprised to see it here.

Pretty good

fantastic album, loved this genre of rock

need to finish but was liking that quite some

Shirley Manson (and this whole band) is an absolute treasure.

Decidedly not garbage. I thought Queer was really catchy besides the interlude, and then Only Happy When It Rains was a good follow up. I loved acoustic guitar riff in Vow. I didn’t listen to the last couple songs until Monday morning and no big thoughts on those.

Kind of interesting

A fantastic debut that has easily stood the 30 year test of time.

Incredible. Guitars sound great; voice sounds great... some cringe-y lyrics at times, but not enough to detract from the overall experience.

Who is milk? WHO IS MILK? Garbage: “I am milk.”

A little more polished than I generally like my 90s alt rock but still pretty good.

Garbage it certainly wasn’t, a gritty rock album with a couple of poppy songs thrown in.

Garbage is one of those bands to which I've always just been a bit indifferent. I neither hate nor love them. They're certainly unique in their sound, but this record all kind of runs together. The "hits" definitely stand out amongst an otherwise forgettable album. I enjoyed it, though.

Genre: alternative rock, grunge, dance pop Production:4/5 Musicality:5/5 Cohesiveness:4/5 Uniqueness:5/5 Concept: 4/5 Replay value:5/5 Favorite song: queer Really unique sound. Solid alternative rock record with twinges of grunge through the vocals and more of a dance hall groove to it. I think this record still has a distinct sound thirty years out. Album is cohesive, but some tracks are a bit too similar. No skip album, can ply straight through for the right audience.

Takes me back, some really good songs on this album.

first time listening to garbage, really like the album! HM: queer, only happy when it rains, stupid girl,

Knew all the hits on here as a child of the 90s but really surprised by how complete this album is. Vow is such a good song.

I recently got into Garbage’s 2005 release “Bleed Like Me”, if you like their self titled debut then give it a listen! Anyway the S/T album is a solid 90’s classic full of bangers. Shirley Manson is a legend and deserves all the praise she gets. 4.5

I never listened to this album, but I'm very familiar with the hits. I enjoyed Vow as one I've never heard. I like Stupid Girl as a favorite hit. Their drummer is an accomplished producer, too, so that's cool. He produced my favorite Smashing Pumpkins album. This album was alright. Not really my jam, but I'll give it a 4 for the sound.

Garbage is one of those bands I always thought about listening to, but never really did. I liked this.

I love Garbage as a band. They're my dad's favorite band, and he passed that love down to me pretty young. A very easy entry into the grunge category, this album is a fantastic start. The Madison based band really knows how to get each instrument to sound just right in the studio. The third track, I only like it when it rains, is their number one hit all time for a reason. All of these tracks are filled with such depth and unique sound. As much as it pains me, I just cannot give this a perfect five-star rating. I believe that they've improved their sounds so much, as well as their songwriting, that despite this being one of their best selling albums, it's not perfect.

This album is so badass. "Queer", "Only Happy When It Rains", "Stupid Girl" and "Milk" are all bangers. Favorite track: Only Happy When It Rains 3.5/5

Girlboss alt-rock, in the best way Queer-baiting is okay when shirley manson does it

Vow and Only Happens when it Rains. I feel like I remember hearing my older sisters listen to this album.

My taste in women: garbage My taste in music: also garbage The last I've heard from them was No Gods No Masters and it was pretty good as well

if the entire album was like the first two song were, this was a clear 5/5. Shame

Fucking banger

45/1001 An old favourite. I love just about everything on this album. Doesn’t get much play nowadays though. 8/10

Love me some Garbage. Not every song is a banger, but overall the album is good.

Definitely not garbage. Some awesome instrumentals!

An edgier than expected but nonetheless very enjoyable time.

Very fun. This brought me back to a time. Very 90s in its essence and intriguing in its own style.

Solid album. A few highlights.

Fantastic. We've seen Garbage live three times. This is the last year they'll tour internationally and it was an unforgettable experience.

Great album. The fuzz bass & guitar riffs in general are pretty exceptional. Shirley Manson's dark, seductive vocals give the record a brooding quality. A 90's alt-rock classic.

Classic 90s alternative pop. Hadn’t listened to the entire album in a long time so it was very nostalgic.

I was very much into this at the time and have seen them live a couple of times. Can't say for sure that I've listened to it for a decade or so, and despite its very 90s sound, there were enough good songs and a whole heap of nostalgia that made it a fun listen and one I would probably now return to in the right mood.

Honestly just fun!

Great album

I had no idea that Butch Vig was the drummer, super cool. Overall, I loved it. It sort of dragged on with the same sound throughout the album, but definitely a lot of highlights.

Instantly transported back to university. In a good way.

Liked this more than I expected. 3.5. Feels too weak for a 4, but there we are.

Congenial

This is an often overlooked quintessential 90s staple. Shirley Manson delivers over wide range of hard rock if the time, sometimes feeling grungy next proto industrial back to hard rock and moody lounge.

Not bad for a first album. Stupid Girl and Only Happens When it Rains I liked.

I wish the vocals were farther forward in the mix, but this rocks.

Garbage seemed cursed. Shirley Manson went to first meet the band founder Butch Vig, famous for producing Nirvana's Nevermind, on the day that Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Their first promotional tour, supporting Smashing Pumpkins, was cancelled halfway through when the Pumpkins' keyboardist died. Later, their tour of the US to promote their third album, was cancelled, the day they were due to set out being 11th September 2001. Talk about bad luck. Pour your misery down on them. I went down that rabbithole of "what ever happened to Garbage" recently when the question randomly popped into my head by chance, so I was excited to see this appear. Garbage very much remind me of that mid-90s period of pop-rock, and it's probably because they were so instrumental in creating that sound. Imagine the privilege of Vig, getting fed up producing for bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth, and wanting to do something in a completely different style. The result is something that feels intentionally over-produced. But I don't mean that in a bad way. It's a distinct sound that somehow elevates Garbage from being an average indie rock group to something quite unique that leans more towards pop and electronica than traditional rock. "As Heaven is Wide" is the perfect example. In the wrong hands, this could be a seriously cringe-inducing song, but in the hands of Butch's production, it ends up becoming a template for a lot of late 90s, early 2000s poppy/metal bands (Skindive, I'm looking at you). Not to completely focus on Butch Vig though - the band wouldn't have worked as well without Shirley Manson, a proper lead for the band, snarling lyrics, and bringing a sort of punk energy to the sound. Some great songs on here, and while they definitely feel "of their era", they still hold up as great songs today.

This album screams "I'm so young and edgy", but it sounds good doing it.

I should listen to more "Garbage". Both energetic and mysterious, great compositions, and honestly, some of the best lyrics so far. Highly recommend.

My sister won a copy of Version 2.0 in the 90s (early 2000s), and I used to think I was cool listening to it (definitely wasn't). The album is moody and brooding. I went to school with a lot of girls I could have mistaken for the singer, aggressive and dark. It's a relatively catchy album, and a lot of effort has gone into the production. I actually enjoyed in, listening on a day stuck on trains, it didn't make me any more annoyed/stressed than I was feeling. My only query, who wrote the 'stupid girl' line first? Them or Matt Sharp in the Rentals' song 'Brilliant Boy'? This was released first, but still, the mind boggles! Oh, 4 stars. It was good, but not life changing.

A solid album that brings back good memories

Finally getting some girls, Shirley!! Sultry voice. ‚This is not my idea of a good time‘ It’s good but also a bit monotone. Still a vibe.

So, this is basically shoegaze's commercial peak, right? Like, not full-on shoegaze, obviously, but it's not worlds away from someone like Curve. I tend to like it more than most of the "real" shoegaze bands, actually, and better than pretty much any shoegaze album to come out in the past decade.

I enjoyed the album as a whole. Every track was great. My only real critique is it certainly has that 90’s rock aesthetic that I try to stay away from. It might grow on me. My initial impression was good and enjoyable, just not enough to get the 5.

Love this album :) very fun times

Actually not Garbage, I liked it a lot.

Super different from what I traditionally listen to. It seemed to have some grunge/punk/pop rock influence but molded into a genre of itself. A bunch of quality songs that are better than average, but nothing crazy.

I've had Queer on my playlist for years. Rest of the album is bangers

Very cool. Very 90s

More hits than I realized

Another band introduced to me by Buffy.

Let's go Blue Jays!

Well this album is super neat

I loved this album, I can definitely see myself turning it on just to vibe to! I was familiar with a lot of more of the songs than I thought, I just didn't know them by title. I miss moody 90s alt/grunge... Best: "A Stroke of Luck" Worst: "Vow"

"Supervixen" - Rules. The weird cuts to silence are awesome. "Queer" - Shirley Manson making an argument for being the best singer of "doot doo doot"s in the 90's. "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" - We've all be there. Every hook is great, the musical bridge is fun, but I really love the way the end of the chorus rises up. "As Heaven Is Wide" - Pretty straightforward, but doesn't grab me. Reminds me of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. "Not My Idea" - This is my favorite song on the album. Everything around the chorus (which is very good!) is just incredible. The best "doot doo doo"s on the album. I just love the way they juxtapose with the whining guitar. The verses and post-chorus are just so much fun. "A Stroke of Luck" - Straightforward with solid vibes, but nothing especially stands out. Feels like it could have been a song featured on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "Vow" - The chugging industrial percussion in the middle of the mix, the guitar switching from fuzzy to jangling, the slight distortion on Shirley's voice. A very good song! "Stupid Girl" - The 'Train in Vain' bassline is a groove, there's a chill dance vibe, there's some weird incongruous electronic noises that sounds like robot vocal fry. This song rules. Very danceable. "Dog New Tricks" - The post-chorus breakdowns where she shouts "Live and you learn!" are good. Not the most exciting song, though. "My Lover's Box" - The mellow palm-muted guitar riff and soft singing to a noisey pop chorus, and then some more "doot doo doo"s! Soft trip-hop drums! Hell yeah. "Fix Me Now" - I'm not a vocalist, so excuse my lack of proper terminology in trying to articulate this: Shirley Manson's voice hits a deeper, more full range in the chorus on this, and it's lovely. Great chorus. "Milk" - Makes me feel like I'm smoking a cigarette in a dark club late at night, watching everyone dance.

Pretty fly

Great album, typical 90s sound.

A good effort. The album starts with the weakest tracks. “Queer” and “Only Happy When It Rains” are a bit boring, but then things step up a gear. I can’t award 5 stars because despite the consistency from track 4 onwards, the album does lack that X-factor, that final ingredient which would make it a classic. It does feel a bit safe at times and it lacks a raw edge, a bit of raw nastiness. Professional production, the beats are consistent, the guitar work is solid, the vocals are (mostly) good, so it’s a very respectable 4/5 from me.

it's like triphop and grunge had a interesting baby. I dig

Really enjoyed

Enjoyed this. Quite a few hits on it.

Album 920 of 1089 Garbage - Garbage (1995) Rating : 3.5 / 5 A nice album that blends a little bit of everything - a touch of punk, some rock, a bit of funk, and a lot of attitude. It walks that line between genres really well and feels very much a product of its time in all the best ways. While it’s hard to single out one track over another, the album as a whole works really well together. Shirley Manson’s vocals fit the tone perfectly - confident, edgy, and cool without ever feeling forced. Overall, a fine listen and a strong debut that still sounds good all these years later.

Fun album! Some parts sound a bit dated now but over all a fresh fusion of sounds.

A pretty stunning debut album. Stupid Girl is great and the whole album just hums along.

Ok I came in pretty pessimistic … I’m not a huge fan of punk music and the album is literally called garbage … I played it through passively and was ready to dismiss it. Thankfully I have a 2+ play policy and boy did it grab me …. I’m not sure why I was so quick to dismiss it as it really wore on me … it got stuck on my replay for the day !! This is exactly why I am doing this project !

more like 3 1/2 just solid alt rock

it's good 8.7/10

Yes. Solide und gut.

Almost classic already. Probably not for every mood but the hits add up.

An awesome debut from Shirley and Butch!

Jest coś w zespołach rockowych z damskim wokalem, co na zawsze chwyta mnie za serce. Może dlatego, że jest ich tak niewiele, ale wydają mi się bardziej wyjątkowe i każdy ma swój styl. 7/10

Solid 90's Alternative.

Came dangerously close to giving this a 5, but upon a relisten it didn’t hit as hard. Still very good though! The production was nice and thicc and boy I sure do love 90s music

great album, feels like my childhood

The 90s had such a wealth of great rock albums. This album is full of quality 90s soundscapes. A mix of glam, grunge, pop and rock, all blended superbly into a cohesive album. With a band made up of an amazing producer and killer vocalist, no wonder it is a slick and polished piece of art.

A little grungey angsty, achy vocals, with enough of a pop flair to make it more accessible to the uninitiated like me

An extremely solid debut album. It’s full of great riffs and hooks throughout. Shirley Manson is such a perfect singer for this music that it’s hard to believe that many of these songs were written before she joined the band. Before this album, I only knew Only Happy When It Rains, and I’d say that this album sounded how I expected it to, but I’m definitely not complaining about that. 4/5

I liked it!

I liked it

Garbage. How to review an album as omnipresent in commercials, television, movies and radio as Garbage? I don’t know. Review: It was fine. I will give it a big full bonus star for being one of my partner’s all-time favourite albums. She was vibing hard. Happy wife, happy life.

Solid album

This debut album starts very solid with three singles/pop hits. The middle slags a bit and gets mellow. "Vow" picks things up again coupled with "Stupid Girl." The best songs on the album are mostly all the singles. Top tracks: "Stupid Girl," "Supervixen," "Only Happy When It Rains," "Queer"

I think this is a strong album. So what if three fellas recruited a singer; this must have happened in a million bands, it doesn't mean a chemistry doesn't develop, and the songs were evidently crafted by them all as a band. (You might be able to tell that I'm irritated by one "top" review that finds them really fake. But that person's favourite album was by Sepultura, so we're coming at guitar-based music from very different places.) I love the overall sound; a great blend of hazy guitars and driving, pop, rhythms. I don't think Garbage pretend to be anything they're not, and the songs are good. I really enjoyed this.

Oooo I liked this vibe. The 90s girl rocker vibe perfected here. Would definitely play more of. Seems like a cool band

i liked the album, it’s fun and edgy and queer is a bop

Forgot how much I liked this album. Yes, it fits into the grunge era but is more varied and intelligent than some other music of that time.

fun i prob will come back

Dug it! 4.

Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5

The most solid 4-Star album ever. The consistency can't be beat. Every single song is 4-stars.

Virkelig cool faktisk. Havde ikke regnet med at så meget industrial ville være ind over

Garbage, c'était quelques singles OK mais dans plus. À écouter l'album en entier en fait c'est plutôt bien.

1. Supervixen - 7 Solid track with an interesting sound. It's like electric guitars that are fed through a synthesizer that alters the sound. It's very enjoyable and the riffs on the altered guitars still sound great. 2. Queer - 7 The pitch change in the middle part of the song I am not a fan of and it kind of ruins the experience for me but I understand its purpose. Outside of that, the song is fantastic. 3. Only Happy When It Rains - 9 Great track. Lyrically it's very very strong. A bit repetitive at times, instrumentally the sound is a brilliant complement to the dreary tone of the vocals which all serve to drive the point home. Brilliant track. 4. As Heaven Is Wide - 10 Great track. Everything about it is awesome: the build up, the sound, the lyrics, the vocal flow. The riff in the background throughout the verses is superb. Really fun son. 5. Not My Idea - 4 Lyrically very weak in the choruses as is the final verse as well. Really makes the track feel like a disappointment. 6. A Stroke of Luck - 7 Decent track with a solid sound. Bass is what is really enjoyable on this track and it sets a fantastic pace and tone. Verses are better than the choruses on the track but that doesn't necessarily mean they're poor. 7. Vow - 6 Song is a little too bubblegum pop styled for my liking. Sound is okay. Lyrically it's okay. There are parts of it that are a lot of fun. There are other parts of it you wish were better. 8. Stupid Girl - 10 This is arguably the best known track off this album and it is for a reason. It's an excellent track. I would still take As Heaven Is Wide over it but that doesn't detract from the quality of this song. The piano-styled instrument adds an insane amount of value to the track, which is underpinned by a brilliant bass. Awesome song. 9. Dog New Tricks - 6 Another middle of the road song. I just feel like it could be lyrically a lot better. The vocals coming out of the second chorus are awful. Guitar lead is the best part of the song. 10. My Lover's Box - 10 Great track. Lyrically absolutely fantastic and the choruses are the best part. The riffs are so brilliant, especially in the middle part of the track. Overall just superb. Best track on the album. 11. Fix Me Now - 7 Good song. Not anything phenomenal but not anything bad and there's a lot to enjoy here with the guitar solo in the middle of the track. Riff that introduces the verses is also very enjoyable. 12. Milk - 8 Vocally the range is superb on this track. Lyrically it's a bit simple. Instrumentally it is as well but still very enjoyable and the strings to end the album are an excellent touch. Solid stuff. Average Rating: 7.58 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 3.79 Rounded Up: 4 Stars

It was an enjoyable album. Led me down a grunge female rock band path for a couple days

Very 90s album. Like the very cyber, urban sound.

Garbage is some real mid-90s nostalgia, and upon revisiting I realize it is a cut above the rest. Never heard an entire Garbage album before, consistent stuff and I realize I never really appreciated what they were doing at the time.

A fun group with a number of great songs. Saw them several times as an opening band before I steamed their music and found them to be quite entertaining. Odd name for a really solid emo band.

I was gonna rate this 5/5 due to nostalgia, but for some reason it doesn't click as much. And I fucking hate Milk.

i knew 'only happy when it rains' going into this and absolutely LOVE it so was happy to hear most of the other songs are just as good. shirley manson's vocal delivery is outstanding - it's full of passion and emotion and done with such fury while still sounding effortless. i'm a big fan of this shoegaze-y sound and it seemed to have somewhat of a grunge influence too which worked well. in additon to OHWIR, 'vow' was a key standout for me and i thought 'milk' was a great closer.

83/100. Garbage is the sound of a band fully formed right out the gate, confident, dangerous, and endlessly replayable.

Bussin bussin

Virkelig godt debutalbum.

Not garbage!

Really refreshing mix of Alternative Rock and Electronic music that stands out in the mostly dreary (and male-dominated) 90's Alt-Rock landscape. Butch Vig wanted to make something different from the Grunge records he was known to produce and, together with such a charismatic frontwoman as Shirley Manson, he more than succeeded. I may even like their second album, Version 2.0, from 1998, even more. Key tracks: Supervixen Only Happy When It Rains Stupid Girl Milk

This was a very long album so I was not able to finish it all but it wasn't bad. I really like the vibe! I will definitely listen to some of the songs again. Solid 8/10

Really interesting sound across the album with a of blend genres, instruments, and electronic sounds. Textured comes to mind as a descriptor and the vocals are varied across the songs as well.

Garage by garage is most definitely not garbage

7/10. some are good and some sounds like you're in a funeral wrapped in rock style and electric guitar. not a bad playlist but for me it's more like a one time thing to listen to, let's see if I will ever come back to listen to this playlist. one of my favorites is "stupid girl" and "only happy when it rains".

A fantastic album. Reminds me of my university years. Queer, Only happy when it rains and Stupid girl, always bring smiles to my face.

Punchy, edgy, 90s vibes. Vocals - equal parts aggressive and sultry. Sometimes sharp then soft. Sometimes dark then bright. Tonal and atonal. An album of duality. Atmospheric and emotional. Some fantastic hooks and riffs. Some songs are about as pop rock as you get and then we go grunge, art rock, industrial, electronic. I love the variation and experimentation. Great listen. Favourite tracks - Vow into Stupid Girl. Or My Lover's Box. 8/10

Never heard of Garbage but with a name like that I was worried it was going to be another Junkyard kind of deal. It was luckily not! 90S rock is a bit of hit and miss for me. This was quite 90s with that fade out jump in the riff of the opening track “Supervixen” being a prime example. The groungy sound made me think of later rockbands like Alvvays. The sound also had quite some breadth with songs like “A stroke of Luck” sounding more like something from Massive Attack. There were also somestandout tracks beside “A stroke of Luck”, I liked “Only Happy when it Rains” although it is slightly too poppy. Maybe this should be a strong 3 star but it feels a bit harsh as most of my 3 stars are just bland and this album was quite memorable. I feel like I found a new artist to listen to so I’m going to settle on a weak 4 star.

I really liked it. It's kinda grunge so I liked it. I'd no problem listening to it through all the album. I think I could put some songs from it on my daily playlist.

Fantastic. Trendsetter.

Grungier and more modern than I remembered. High points are durable, but low points remain forgettable.

This is great. Very original. Production stands out to me the most. Vocals are unique as well as their style of playing. All songs were enjoyable and interesting to listen to. Good amount of range. Solid Garbage album. 4/5

Gefällt mir ziemlich gut. Kommt zu meinen Favoriten. 4,2 Sterne.

Classic mid 90s rock album

Takes me back to my teen years when my brother was obsessed with this band! A classic.

Reminds me of momma

Fucking banger - nostalgic of puberty and getting loads of piercings.

The guitars and electronic textures combined with the slinky vocals make this is a great sounding record. Some tracks stand out for their hooks, like Queer, but nearly all of them sound great.

Genre: Alternative Rock An album that was very pleasantly surprising! Only one big hit (…When It Rains), but an album full of great production choices and some really interesting songwriting choices. 12 cohesive songs, but each with their own big 90s flair to them. Very listenable, very good rock/pop record. 4/5

Súper lo escucharía, se me hace como hole pero distinto…

Definitely enjoyed Garbage in the 90s but haven’t heard in a while. Solid pop with some industrial/EDM/triphop elements mixed in. Mansons vocals are great, just finding the production a bit dated at this point.

This was an album I was pleasantly surprised with. It is absolutely dripping in 90's production, which I love. I've never listened to Garbage before, but they had a really cool alt/industrial/electronic sound that I find myself to quite enjoy. Butch Vig is a phenomenal producer, and you can easily hear his fingerprints all over this. One thing I find surprising is that a lot of the synth sounds have a lot of similarities to Pogo's work on Marilyn Manson, but as far as I can tell, he had zero involvement on this record. I have yet to find a 5/5 album, but this is one of my favorites so far!

misleading title

more my style, more my era.

Garbage is surprisingly good. Sounds like what I would’ve imagined a dystopian Y2K would be like if I was in my 20s in 1987.

Supervixen - 8.5/10 Queer - 7.5/10 Only Happy When It Rains - 8.5/10 As Heaven Is wide - 10/10 Not my idea - 7.5/10 A stroke of luck - 9/10 Vow - 8/10 Stupid Girl - 8/10 Dog New Tricks - 9/10 My Lover's Box - 8/10 Fix me now - 7.5/10 Milk - 8/10 83/100

I loved this album when it came out-checked all the boxes for all the music I loved at the time, plus Shirley Manson was both an icon and crush for me. Coming back to it, I still love it-a fun blend of so many things I love. It sounds like both a product of the 1990s but also still feels as fresh as it did when I first heard it. Gives very “My So called Life” vibes. It’s not perfect, but it’s still a delight. #nostalgia #90skid

Surprisingly rad

The singles are very very sharp and punchy. Album tracks are good too. The whole thing is good and likely eventually better with more listens, but very good Between a 3 and a 4

I was really surprised at how much I liked this album. Some lyrics made me want to roll my eyes and the album feels dated - it‘s very 90‘s. Manson‘s vocals are superb though and I enjoyed the dark, gloomy and alt sound of the tracks. My favourites were “Fix Me Now”, “Stupid Girl” and “Vow”. Glad to have discovered this album through the list!

classic! this still holds its own

this is just fucking great. raw powerful energy

I love this grunge album - includes hits Queer, Only Happy When it Rains, and Stupid Girl.

It's Garbage (which I like). Definitely already had their sound down.

Loved it

This was a really fun listen! Super poppy and hook-filled while keeping some of the edge of noise rock and punk rock. Also some trip-hop tracks mixed in was unexpected but pretty sweet. 8/10

Quite my taste tbh

Third Nirvana-adjacent album this week, and likely the best. Big fan of the sound on this one, and Manson's vocals really bring it all together.

Catchy 90's fun. Was not a fan of Garbage when this album came out, nice to re-discover it.

Not my typical sound, but I like this a looot. Combines a lot of elements in an interesting way. Dark, gloomy, indie, noisy. Great hook writing and lyricism. Her vocals fit very well. Creative vision on point, except for the fact that this album is not garbage!

somehow a lot more lowkey than i remembered...a wonderfully distinct pairing of the fluffy pink cover and sensual feminine quality thats always being basked in with something kind of dark and understated and rumbling. very cool aesthetic, very cool songs, if maybe for me personally a bit much to take 50 minutes of at once but that could just be a mood thing. lots of breath and air and shadows and lights reflected in puddles....kind of urban but with way more space than that implies yk. and rly rly impressively well-realized for a debut too...its a lot like murmur in that it sounds like it should be album four or five yk?????

Didn't listen much at the time besides the radio play on my jjj. This is good stuff

Garbage… man. What a fantastic debut. There are no skips here and the sound hasnt aged at all (to my millennial ears). The album kicks off with some stellar tracks

A very solid and great alternative rock album, with some touches of noise and shoegaze. I really liked the singing, as it is the responsible element of making this album as catchy as it is, but my favourite trait of this whole record is how great detailed and textured it is, which is expected for an album label as noise and shoegaze, as I mentioned. Nothing more to add than it is fun.

-i was OBSESSED with several songs from this album two years ago but never actually heard the whole thing. i’m so glad i did now -not a single bad song on here tbh, though i couldn’t get into the second half quite as much? there’s just something i love about Shirley Manson’s voice and the whole band’s style… i need to get back into Garbage now. possible 4.5 star contender -Favorites are Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains, As Heaven Is Wide, and Stupid Girl

I initially groaned at this because I forget Garbage and Hole are different bands. Had I managed to mentally uncouple these bands sooner, I might have been a Garbage fan in highschool. My first impression is that Garbage leaned way more Industrial than I thought. The very machine-eque drumming and/or drum machine(?), really surprised me as I was expecting straight Grunge. The hits ("Only Happy When It Rains" & "Stupid Girl") do skew a little more 'mainstream' alt-rock, so maybe that's what lead me astray. Overall, this was an interesting listen for me and I’m sorry I missed it the first time around. "Queer": feels very proto-Fiona Apple. "Only Happy When It Rains": after "Queer", this really ramps the album back up to the heavier side. Hearing this in context makes it feel less Pop. "As Heaven Is Wide": this is when I noticed the industrial influence. It also reminded me of future metal/industrial acts, like Orgy and Powerman 5000. Not sure I can fully defend that, but something got my mind there. "Not My Idea": this is proto-CSS. I know that's an obscure band reference, but I'm going to call it out as proof of influence. "Stupid Girl": If you can listen past the bubblegum, the breakdowns remind me of something straight off of a KMFDM album.

This was a pretty fun album that I enjoyed, I had heard Stupid Girl before, it's probably used in a movie or TV show at somepoint. Overall I thought it was pretty solid 90s rock and maybe a 4 star album and I'd recommend it to my kid.

Not garbage at all

Excellent album

Had never heard this one beyond "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains." Really enjoyed it, from the production, to the guitar/band work, to Shirly Manson's snarling vocals. The whole psycho-sexual angle on many of the songs gets old but this is a damn good album which makes me want to delve more deeply into their other stuff.

Only had heard a few tracks from this band, was not expecting to enjoy the album as much as I did. I love Shirley Manson's vocal style where you're hanging on every word, and the washed out, almost shoegazy tone of the guitars. My favorites here are As Heaven is Wide and Vow, which is kinda funny because they're probably the most melodramatic lyrically, but it works for me. Not everything feels essential, but a great album nonetheless

Garbage – Garbage (1995) | Alternative Rock / Electronica | Avg: 8.54 | Favorite Song: “Only Happy When It Rains” Garbage is one of those debuts that lands with a fully formed identity. From the first track, it’s clear this band wasn’t interested in following trends—they were here to bend them. “Only Happy When It Rains” is the obvious centerpiece for me. It captures the album’s ironic melancholy, pairing alt-rock angst with a sleek, almost industrial shimmer. But what really surprised me is how consistently strong the rest of the album is. Nearly every track lands in the 8 to 10 range, and that kind of consistency is rare. What makes this album special is how it blends darkness and polish without compromising either. Shirley Manson’s vocals are commanding but never overbearing, and the production—layered with fuzz, loops, and distortion—is ahead of its time. There’s a lot going on here: grunge attitude, trip-hop aesthetics, pop sensibility. Yet somehow it all works. Garbage doesn’t just hold up—it still sounds modern. For a debut, it’s remarkably self-assured, and from a reviewer’s standpoint, it’s one of the most well-balanced records of the alt-rock era.

Menudo discazo, no tiene una sola canción no disfrutable literalmente. Uno d los mejores albums q descubrí con la cosa esta. Le daría como un 9/10 pq tampoco me parece perfecto

This album is not Garbage…well it is but it’s not. Good stuff.

This rocks, banger after banger

Good album. Plenty of catch and hook, power fuzz and punk energy. Still works well today.

Started this album when I was making my breakfast and morning coffee yesterday, and wow! Being smacked in the face with the opening chords of Supervixen made me realise quickly I was gonna like this song. As for the rest of the album, I thought it was pretty fun, however this is a type of music that I just know I wouldn't have come across had I not been doing the 1001 challenge. Other standouts for me were 'Not My Idea', 'Stupid Girl', and 'Milk'. Will definitely listen to these again.

I was half in doubt and half in interest when I told my father about this album prior to listen to it and he was like “OH THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME”. Turns out he was right. Damn. Awesome alt rock with insane production like it doesn’t have a bad track in it at all.

Good fun, varied, emblematic of its time

Some really good songs. Stupid girl and only happy when it rains are good

I love it

A really good 90’s album that aged really well. A special debut from Garbage, with a very interesting blend, there’s some crunchy dark tones that sometimes dip into shoegaze territory and it plays so well with Shirley’s melodic vocals. I forgot how much I loved Queer, it’s arguably my favourite track, it’s such an awesome song, sultry, haunting, hooky, simply a great piece of music. Just learned that they promoted the debut opening for Smashing Pumpkins on tour, what a great bill that would have been in 1996. I really do like this album a lot, there are a couple tracks that fell a bit flat for me but even Stroke of Luck does give a change of pace and is still decent. Great stuff here 4 stars

One of my favorites in the 90s. Great live band.

Another album that hit at the right time in my life to love it well beyond its merit. "Vow," "Stupid Girl," and "Queer" are still in my personal heavy rotation. "Milk" is on a shortlist of my very favorite songs. It was fun revisiting this as a whole, though a lot of this sounds the same. At the time bringing all of these elements together at once felt groundbreaking for mainstream modern rock radio; it was as vibrant as anything in the post-Cobain era. It was fun revisiting this in whole. Bumping it up a star for its personal meaning to me.

8.5/10

Perfectly solid 90s rock album. Have always loved Shirley Manson's vocals.

This record is probably technically a 3, but I was pretty surprised by how much I enjoyed it beyond the 3-4 singles I'd heard before. Great production, solid songwriting, enough variation and sense of melody to keep things interesting. 4/5

This album is garbage -- but every song on here is amazing (ba-dum-tss). The whole vibe doesn't match most of what i listen to, but everything in the album is so good i could listen to it the whole day. (This isn't true for even some of my favourites!) The songs are very catchy - the singing; writing; instrumental and overall vibe are an incredible experience; the raw emotion in the electric guitar and vocals is a big big +. The ONLY downside i've heard about the album is how it sounds like a garbage (get it?) industry plant, "fake" album made specifically to be on the billboards. If you hear this and immediately decide you're not listening to it - fuck you, nerd. The signs *are* there, but if you dont look for them, it sounds like any other maybe-goth-rock-pop?ish album - not like there's many of them close to Garbage's self-titled. Mixing alt-rock and pop looks bad when written down, but Garbage pull it off; they made it sound not-so-Garbage (last one i swear) The whole album sounds like one of those songs on the radio which you start bopping your head to but just can't find later. I might've mentioned it already, but every song is just so damn good.

The album was really good, some songs are corny(disney channel level corny), but still really enjoyable

I got really into the teenage-angsty vibes of this one…

What a great start to this journey I've heard a couple garbage songs before like milk it's a good song good album four out of five

Not bad. I think I'd appreciate it in a specific mood, but I still enjoyed it overall. It did get a bit samey at times.

Female-led rock band. Cohesive, edgy, stylish, and sounds amazing. Would listen again and check out their other music. 9/10

Loved this album when I was younger, it still stands and is as good as it always has been

Forgot how good this was

Might have heard this Album too often. Fav: I‘m only happy when it rains

Really quite enjoyed this. Inventive and funk pop punk

This album is most definitely not garbage.

an unexpectedly great album. given this sort of garish cover and the band name, I was pretty certain that it would just be some average 90's band that kinda sucks, but this was awesome! I especially liked "Queer," "Only Happy When It Rains," "Not My Idea," and "Vow," but I will defo listen again. :-)

This is absolutely incredible. Not a single skip, almost every song is going on my playlist. The instrumentals are CRAZY good. A few songs were a little iffy, but nothing outright bad or even mediocre.

Definitely not garbage

This album is a very pleasant surprise with several really good songs. 4 stars or B+.

Great production, great songs. Only not 5 stars because of the manufactured nature of the band

As a teen I had a crush on Shirley Manson.

I remember this album from when I was 15. Loved it then, still love it now.

Classic grunge album, I always thought garbage never got the kudos it deserved but this was definitely a banger if an album!

Fun garbage

The best kind of garbage

I kind of diggit!

With so many song I was worried, given the genre, that they’d all start to sound the same. They did not. Kudos to the band for that. Another kudos goes to the fact that any of the songs could have been on a late 90’s/early 2000’s movie soundtrack. The lead singer is very much in the PJ Harvey & Alanis Morrisette category.

Good album

Big album. Interested in listing to this with fresh (old) ears. The first and only sexy grunge record? I liked it a lot more depth than I expected or remembered.

Garbage men ändå inte alls. Tänkvärt.

Strong 4. I had heard bits and pieces over the years, but listening to the entire album is new. Wow! Go ahead. Enjoy this!

This really could nearly be a 5-star album. The only thing holding it back is it starts to sorta blur together in the back half, but there is some gooood shit in here.

So much fun. For an album and band called Garbage, this was surprisingly easy listening. You could feel the 90s dripping off of it. Definitely want to return! Favorites: Queer, Only Happy When It Rains

Pretty neat example of some of 90s alternative's more eclectic leanings.

It wasn’t perfect, but it was really, really good. Great guitar, and I love love love Shirley Manson’s voice. Didn’t have to skip any songs, and I loved the overall style that wasn’t really all in your face. Really surprised I hadn’t heard of them before today’s album. It’s Garbage, but it’s definitely not garbage!

What a fantastic album! I can see the influence on other bands like Wolf Alice in this album. There is definitely some filler, but the album stays fresh while keeping it cohesive. I think I will listen again and again.

Knew I liked some Garbage, but liked more songs than expected

This was a fun Friday album. I very much dig this vibe, giving big “mall chain that’s not open anymore y2k commercial” vibes

Honest a really solid mid 90's alternative album here

An actually good 90's pop rock album, what a miracle. The singles are the standouts, but this is really listenable all the way through. 4 stars.

I've liked this album since it dropped & caught them when they supported Smashing Pumpkins on the Mellon Collie tour, so I'm good with it being included. Always happy for an excuse to listen to it again. Favorite song: "Not My Idea"

I was not aware of this artist at all. Never heard of garbage but despite the obvious puns, this album is definitely not garbage. Bah dum tssh! But seriously I loved this album. It’s super melancholy and mildly depressing but in a good way. Definitely an album I’m gunna try and find a copy of in the future. The only small problem I have with this album is there are a few tracks that are slower that I don’t click with as much. But this is another case of getting as close to a 5 as you can possibly get. But I can’t stress enough that this album is worth your time, it may not have been my favorite album of all time but this is a HIGH 4.

I'm actually really digging the vibes midway through the album. This is pretty cool psyche/grunge/rock with that 90s acid-rock kind of sound.

Great music. Don’t know what happened to them. Thought there would be more.

Gerne mal wieder.

A Classic. Loved it since 1998.

Garbage. Beautiful Garbage. Absolute Garbage.

This album is a total banger! I can't believe these guys were never bigger than they actually got.

I liked it a lot

Very good.

Solid album. Garbage has always been a band I enjoy.

A really cool album I’m surprised I haven’t heard before based off listening to so much grunge and alt rock from the 90s. Really solid album that’s catchy, great drums and vocals.

I'm mildly familiar with this band, as in I know the name and vaguely the style of music they create. Can't say I know if I've ever heard a song from them though. Hoping to hear something with a bit of energy to it. Looking forward to seeing what this is about. Going in with no real expectations. Supervixen Didn't expect it to sound so noisy. Great fuzz and distortion. Love the prominent bass. The instrumental pauses make it stick out from the crowd. I like the almost call and response dynamic between the guitars at points. Solid start. Good. 4/5 Queer Sounds pretty slick. I quite like the vocal delivery on the chorus. The subtle background guitar on the bridge is a great piece of texture adding an uneasiness to the moment. Catchy and fun. Great. 4.5/5 Only Happy When It Rains Crunchy and cool. The lyrics are unapologetically edgy, I struggle to take them seriously, but the ridiculousness kinda works. Love the backing vocals. Fun track. Good. 4/5 As Heaven Is Wide Was not expecting something quite so electronic. Sounds really moody. Has some slight industrial qualities to it. The vocals are a bit hard to hear on the verses. Really like the atmosphere of this track. Sounds alluring, dark and dangerous. Great. 4.5/5 Not My Idea I like the instrumental on the verses. The chorus sounds a bit abrasive, not too sure if I like it or not. Love the electric guitar in the background. Possesses some industrial elements vaguely similar to the previous track. Love the contrast between the serene melodic moments and the harshness of the chorus. Creative track. Good. 4/5 A Stroke of Luck There's a really spacey sort of atmosphere to the instrumental. Love the subtle distorted effects in the background as well as the sparse synth. The chorus feels too large, kinda kills the interesting spaciousness of the track. Wish there was a bit more subtlety to it. It's a well constructed chorus, though I'm not quite sure it fits. Fine. 3/5 Vow The panning effect is a bit obnoxious. Really like how dense and loud it is. Has a great drive to it. The vocals have some great attitude behind them. The guitar tuning the instrumental bridge us really satisfying to listen to. Infectious energy, great chorus, really catchy. All the worries I had about this track disappeared after the first minute passed. Fantastic. 5/5 Stupid Girl Has a bit of a groove to it, especially with that bassline. Love the production on the pre chorus. Catchy and fun. Doesn't need to do much else to succeed at what it's trying to do. Great. 4.5/5 Dog New Tricks Crunchy with a good groove and some decent drive. Really like the melodic moments here, especially how they contrast with the thick instrumental. Another great chorus. A good continuation of the sound from the previous track. Good. 4/5 My Lover's Box Most of the reasons this song works for me have already been laid out in my reactions to previous tracks. It just sounds really crisp, love the chrous and the synergy between instrumental and vocals here. Simple reasons to like a song, but sometimes it just works that way. Fantastic. 5/5 Fix Me Now Layered sound. Love the production on the vocals. Simple but effective solo. It's another great chorus over a pretty cool instrumental. I guess I'm repeating myself at this point. Good. 4/5 Milk I like that it's a bit more slowed down and calm aftert the pretty loud and bombastic last few tracks. Almost has a trip hop vibe to it. Sounds spacious and flows well. Not the most spectacular track, but gets the job done. Decent. 3.5/5 Honestly going into this with no expectations at all turned out to be quite the blessing. I was pleasantly surprised at every turn by this. I really appriciate how broad the scope of their sound is, leaning into a solid variety of genres ranging from industrial to trip hop to straight up raging alternative rock. It's an interesting blend of diverse songwriting and consistent performances which in turn allows the listener an unpredictable and stimulating journey. Loud crunchy guitars, groovy basslines, spacious drumbeats and slick and alluring vocals combine to create memorable rock tunes with infectious choruses and unique instrumentals. Add in some electronics and some distorted effects and you get something that feels really thought out and creative. And while my experience with this was extremely positive, there is still a few minor gripes that make it miss out on top marks for me. Namely the lyrics being kinda ridiculous at times, especially with some of the cynisism found in them feeling a bit put on. One track (A Stroke of Luck) is also notably weaker than the rest, where I end up feeling a bit let down by a few creative choices made with that song in particular. Apart from these minor things it is otherwise a great time. A memorable tracklist with plenty of things to return to. 4/5 With room to grow on subsequent listens. Fave track. Vow

Plenty of solid tracks. The radio songs were a trip down memory lane.

Still slays

This is not too bad. I never got into Garbage, but I never hated them either. Queer and Only Happy When It Rains are pretty good. I bet this is Billie Eilish's favorite album. The album tracks are not as good as the hits, but this is surprisingly better than I anticipated. I misjudged this album when it was popular, this is pretty good. I always liked Stupid Girl. The album tracks are better on the back half of the album, Fix Me Now is particularly good. Milk is a little bit of a let down to end the album, a little bit Depeche Mode-like for my taste. But overall a better album than I would have ever expected.

YES, GARBAGE! Même si je préfère leur deuxième album, celui-ci met la table à leur rock alternatif mêlé d’électro. Ça reste un de mes groupes favoris!

Garbage sort of straddled both mainstream and indie worlds, thanks to Shirley Manson, who brought a big scoop of Riot Grrl to the mainstream. Big, loud, compressed sound and a video friendly look that had just enough bad-girl swagger to hold our attention. Butch Vig and the rest of the band delivered the driving sound. It was all very intentional, but this was a product I enjoyed.

That Shirley Manson and the rest of Garbage ever found each other is a remarkable story. Serendipity, tragedy and perseverance; it’s an origin story that’s located directly atop a great, heaving fault line in 90s culture. For me, personally, this record is a bit of a missing link between two of my first musical loves: Nirvana and Linkin Park. The former represented here by, yes, Butch Vig, but also by the swaggering attack of “I’m only happy…”’s first eight bars and plenty of moody moments besides. The latter by the feeling that this is a record born in and around a studio rather than a practice space; a triumph of studied creative process more than spontaneous creative prowess. As with “Hybrid Theory”, Garbage’s debut packs hooks on top of hooks on top of hooks. And as with Linkin Park, there’s a serious risk that the smell of all that polish would grate and nauseate if not for the rawness and brilliance of the singer in front of it all. It’s a marvellous pop album; seriously clever and self aware but never aloof or unapproachable.

Not quite a no-skip album but one of the best grunge shoegaze 90s efforts I've heard (the bar is pretty low though).

Heard it before. I dyed my hair ginger back in high school because of Shirley 4/5

Well orchestrated and arranged pop

Just a cool record. Shirley Manson is a treasure. Favorite: Only Happy When It Rains Would I listen to it again: Yes
