Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Brit-Rock-ey, but with good variation of instrumentation and vocals through the album
I want to like this a lot more than I do, which is a weird thing to want. I guess it's because it has all the trappings of something I would love, but somehow it never gets all the way there. 'Common People' is a great song, but I first heard William Shatner's version. Maybe that's the problem right there. I like this more than just as a background record and I'll keep trying with this one, so maybe that makes it a 4. Yeah, I guess it's a four then. Okay.
So sharp, so good. "Common People" and "Disco 2000" and "Something Changed" are droll and excellent in their own way. "Pencil Skirt" and "Underwear" are also delightful. One misses the golden age of such listenable fin de siecle snark.
Chill and poppy
Used to really like this in 2020. Still do..but not as much as before. Very good lyrics/sound tho. Something changed is my fav.
This is a pretty iconic album in 90s music, I can certainly place Common People, Disco 2000 and Something Changed to particular points in my teenage life. Probably Pulp's most solid offering.
Pretty good, reminds me of Bowies voice with some more angst. Loved Common People
There's not many bands that have produced multiple anthems that have stood the test of time and are still in the popular consciousness; this album produced not only Common People but also Disco 2000. Which is to say there is certainly no lack of songwriting or production on show. Bar Itallia has to be up there with the all time great album closers as well. Jarvis Cocker always brings a lot of personality to everything he does but I tend to find his melodies and lyrical content a bit samey, his enthusiasm more than makes up for it though. All in all a brilliant album but not one thats in my regular rotation 4/5
Spiky and tart. "Common People" and "Disco 2000" and "Something Changed" are sharply observed and delightful. Funny thing, for all Cocker's reputation for snark and irony, one believes every word he sings – and believes he believes them, too (which is perhaps more to the point). The playing and tones are ideally suited to his style as well.
Very interesting and thought-provoking lyrics. A style of music that I never would have listened to other than this site so I'm glad I was exposed to it!
A really great album, possibly the best of the genre.
OK, usually I don't care for Brit Pop. But this one is really great. I was introduced by a friend who first played me William Shatner's version of Common People and then played me the original.
I miss britpop. Never listened to the whole album before.
Snilldar 90s casual sveitt britpop. Mjög gott stöff.
A favourite of mine. Although some songs on the back half seem a bitter like filler.
Great Brit pop/new wave
Favourite track(s): Common People Ausdrucksstarker Rock, teilweise mehr gesprochen als gesungen. Viele Melodien, die ins Ohr gehen.
A pretty good album. "Common People" was certainly the highlight of the album. It is a really good song that is pretty much my idea of good Britpop. I would listen to this entire album again.
Common People & Disco 2000 are my favorite Pulp songs, so it's nice to see they're on the same album. I especially like the lyrics to Common People, and I've read it's autobiographical. Pulp (and Blur) are quintessential 90s Britpop, so next time I'm feeling nostalgic for that era, I'm putting on this album.
I've only really ever heard Common People and Year 2000 from Pulp, so I was definitely interested in hearing more and overall I liked what I heard.
sounded like David Bowie with more of a rock edge. I was not familiar with this band, but liked them.
Fun
Different Class is the fifth album by English rock band Pulp. Released during the height of Britpop popularity, this album was a critical and commercial success - winning the 1996 Mercury Music Prize, and being certified 4 times platinum. It is rightfully considered a classic of British pop, as it still sounds great to this day, but can also transport a listener back to 90's England. The album's Britpop/rock music deserves a listener's undivided attention while it blasts them with deft, energetic, catchy melodies & hooks, that can also slow down to something almost tranquil and atmospheric. The synth-spiked pop music is undeniably danceable and makes even the rhythm-averse people nod their head to the beat. I went into this album not expecting much, but was greatly surprised by how good the music was. I may have to check out more albums from Pulp now!
Britpop never fails to deliver. This one is a nice, although bit too long, mix of entertaining Britpop songs with a focus on the acoustic guitar
4.4/5 decent britpop
I've heard a lot of people talk about Pulp but never really listened to them much. I enjoyed the songs "Common People", "Disco 2000" "Something Changed" and "Underwear" Good to listen to while I tried to eradicate an ant infestation.
I would rate it 5 but some of the songs have real weird lyrics so it’s a 4 for me.
Quality music. New sound I hadn't heard.
liked it more than i remembered
The vocalist spent a lot of time listening to David Bowie, and I love him for it.
That's some good brit rock
Ja faktiskt gilla de!! Underwear e en sån tik sång dock
Ganska bra britpop album!
Perhaps my fav Britpop album and Britpop band. Not sure why it's been so long since I listen to this album, it's good. Though I have to admit Shatner's cover of Common People is more enjoyable than the original.
I found out about Pulp several years after Brit Pop was over. I really like this album. Common People is an awesome song.
I missed this band when they were big. I like Blur and Oasis, the only two britpop groups I really know. This one was pretty good, too!
This album surprised me. I liked it a lot more than expected. Side 1 stronger than Side 2 but overall really good 90s Brit-pop rock. I even thought about checking Discogs for the vinyl - high praise for a band I had mostly ignored when this was released.
It's so good, and gets you in different ways each listen.
dope nok
really good
Never heard of this band before, but very nice!
the intentional gimmickry and playfulness of Pulp was always at odds with the boozy Oasis, stoned Roses and intellectual Blur, but this was probably them at their peak. 4 seems light - i'd ideally add another cheeky half later
I said on my other Pulp review that I hadn't explored much Pulp beyond Different Class. I really enjoy this album despite all the things I dislike about 90s music: too long albums and Britpop. Yet this album works for me. Maybe it's because it is anchored by the banger of a song with Common People.
I've always liked their hits but never clicked with Pulp beyond that. Really enjoyed listening to the whole album tho, plenty of bops and some moody stuff too, excellent album high 4.
Britpop classic. Common People is one of the greatest songs ever written. Not as good as His 'n' Hers or This is Hardcore imo. 7/10
Excellent album - and a real picture of its time.
Of the Brit pop or punk I didn’t know before hand it is my favorite.
Disco 2000 je peak Britpop indeed
I always sort of liked Pulp, they were a fun pop band. I didn't appreciate quite how good they were though, until listening to this now. What a great album! There's so much to like here, fun tunes, great production, interestingn lyrics, all kinds of moods. I really rather love it!
A cheerful and great album all the way through, although the sexual theme can get a bit much at times. I particularly enjoyed "I spy".
Kind of creepy with the whispering at some points... but it's not a bad album. Some enjoyable artrock or whatever genre you'd put this in. I never got tired of listening to it, which is more than I can say for some of the albums on here. Dude's got sex on his mind all the time though, and it becomes a little comical by the end of the album.
I've pretty much enjoyed every single album that Pulp has dropped. This one especially.
goody good
I love the cover art, and there are a couple of classics on there. Disco 2000 and Common People are great tracks, but so over-played for me as to have become wallpaper. The themes are more interesting than many of their Britpop contemporaries. Sorted for E's and Wizz is a standout track for me. I love the melody and the lyrics describe the late 80's/early 90's rave/ecstasy revolution that I was too young to get into at the time, but have researched with interest since. Pulp to me sound like art college. In a good way.
love a bit of brit-pop
“On that damp and lonely moment, Thursday years ago” Damn I love that song. I like the record very much although I think it’s a bit long and dramatic. I was 9 when it came out and yet it has attached some great memories, I wish I could’ve seen pulp live
Very cool 90s British indie rock album. Unique sound while still being very representative of its time. Not perfect, but will likely revisit it again soon.
This and Blur's Great Escape wrap up the 90s half way through the decade. Jarvis and the band is on point; lyrics, themes, melodies and riffs, whispers and croons and yelps. It's in a class on its own.
Great album. Listened to it for 4 hours and it created a great station as well.
I admire Pulp's ability to juxtapose the highly consumable fuzzed brit-pop sound with novelesque narratives of tortured characters in a broken world. You can hear this in the first 4 tracks, which are kind of like couplets of alternating themes. The title track 'Mis-Shapes' is a perfect summary of the struggle of a younger generation coming up against the adversely challenging realities that their elder generations set before them. The story carries on in 'Common People', where two people explore (and ultimately become disillusioned with) just what it would mean to be common. Both tracks have this bubbly pop beat, which make it easy to overlook just how downtrodden these stories really are. Sandwiched between those two tracks is 'Pencil Skirt', which tells the story of a depraved would-be suitor who is stalking someone, persisting past all objections, and content only in the acquisition or torment of the object of their obsession. If you don't like that, then you'll want to steer clear of this character's escalating fantasies in the track "I Spy". And it carries on from there. Each song, something you can easily bop along with as it plays along in the background. Then a lyric grabs your attention, and you find that the stories are increasingly demanding your attention. Somewhere along the way, the pop tunes fall away entirely and you're struggling with the dilemmas of these characters.
This is almost the ultimate Britpop album. The lyrics are clever, the music is upbeat but sneering. An album with songs I can dance to and others to sit down and listen.
Really good Britpop, I really enjoyed it
So very British
I had never heard of this band, but had heard Common People. This may be the only Britpop I can stand. Really well done. Could be mixed better, as some instruments are too quiet in the background, but it's a really enjoyable 90s British time capsule.
Honestly a pretty good album, but it bleeds together after a while. I enjoyed it, but didn’t find it to be a true masterpiece.
4.5/5 Amazing album, love the sound and the variation between the songs. Favourite songs: - Common people - Disco 2000 - Underwear
Pleasantly surprised, always did like British rock and this was cool.
I knew a few of these singularly, but the whole album was very good. Great music with plenty of ‘let’s dance’ riffs.
Solid 3.5
I liked this album more than I was expecting to. But I forgot to rate originally and cant remember the particular songs I liked.
Nostalgie, vergeten britpop 2 mega nummers
Common people rocks!
Nice cohesive album!
Soft 4 stars. Another unknown piece of music that I thoroughly enjoyed
This is kinda sexy? And funny and dramatic. Adore the singles. 3.5 rounded up.
Fresh.... As fresh as pulp....to coin a new phrase ....I think anyway.
The highpoint of Pulp's career? Very possibly.
Indie <3
Good work Jarvis!
Pop ma carino
Classic
Fun, energetic. OK, I can see how someone who grew up with this would be absolutely in love with it.
Good sleezy album all the way through, not really my genre, but still a good album.
It was great
Pop-rock icons
Always heard good things about Pulp, didn’t let me down. The couple singles I heard before were the standout tracks. My kind of genre too, enjoyed it.
I think that my introduction to Pulp was hearing William Shatner's cover of "Common People". I like both versions. As soon as I heard the first track on this album, I knew that I was listening to the band who is responsible for "Common People". "I Spy" was my least favorite track, but even with that I have feeling I probably would listen to this album again. I enjoyed the listen. 3.6 stars
Honestly a 4.5. Really liked it, but I hold the 5 stars rating at such a high level it doesn't quite hit it.
A decent Britpop album with some great melodramatic and meloncholy tunes. 8.0/10 Best Track: "Common People"
Nice!
Very 90s British. Pretty good!
Great pop, not just for students. Surprisingly time-less
Enjoyed every song. Kinda forgot they did other stuff besides common people.
Easy listening.
'Common People' is een fantastisch nummer, en het grootste deel van dit album ligt wel in lijn ermee
Was a nice surprise, actually enjoyed it quite a lot
Prior to 1001 albums I had not listened to the whole album, but it was still one of my favourite albums.
Muy bien álbum no conocido
Some quality songs on this. Like the style too.
Leuk! Met een paar goeie meezingers 🙂.
Classic of the genre, still sounds great
I enjoyed this, had some definite hallmarks of other Brit-pop/rock bands
feel i should enjoy this more than I do, still some great tunes and a slice of time
Nice energy, cheerful.
Spooky vibes, I am surprised I like this.
Indiezinho gostoso demais, curti!
It’s like if David Bowie and Duran Duran were a little simpler and sleazy. This is the kind of album that the kids on Skins would listen to for sure and I dig it.
Great britnpop album, probably the most theatrical and dynamic of all the Brit pop singers. 3.9
thought i wouldn't care for it...turns out i do
Very good britpop album. I only had heard the single Common People out of all of their songs. The whole album is definitely worth a listen.
The Smiths and Flight of the Conchords-esque sound. Fun album. Common people is a great song
Couple of missteps but it’s great. Sorted for Es and Whiz is still the best
Every song is good. Just a classic album.
I really enjoyed this. Going to add it to my main mixes.
I liked it, there's a lot of glam and personality to it. This Aussie gives it four nights at the Sydney Opera House out of five.
Good, catchy tracks
Vorläufer von Panic! Und Fall Out Boy? Ich mag den Sound
We would never have listened to this album if not for the 1001 Albums list. Really good and surprisingly catchy.
I enjoyed common people, but pencil skirt sounds really... Uh... Rapey to me.
Iconic, yet annoying
A really fun kind of music I've never really listened to.
Liked it :)
top
Has some David Bowie and Talking Heads vibes, really like the two hits off the album, the rest was forgettable.
underwear is an amazing fucking song
It's pretty good Britpop, so of course if you read any English reviewer, they're the second coming. Their most prominent single, Common People, is pretty badass, but the rest of it is mostly just horny generic pop. Best track: Common People
fuck britain
8/10, beautiful, and grimy. Class, and sex. Grand, and quiet. Operatic, and boozy.
3/6
I know this is an important album for a lot of people, my wife included, so I’ve heard it in passing a number of times but it’s never been something that’s made much of an impact on me. Listening on headphones, it seems this is perhaps the best thing that ever came out of Britpop. Still not my thing, but it’s okay.
Some good hits but not my vibe for a full album
Sometimes there's an album on here that just screams "a middle aged British dude chose this"
Not bad, but a lot of the songs sounded very similar.
Meh.
So much going on, very hard to Digest but some great songs
In an earlier era you would get an album and listen to it front to back, paying attention to the lyrics maybe, paying attention to the music and melodies on the second pass. Kind of sad that those days are gone (for me mostly). But this album absolutely requires a full listen at least once through because of the storyline that plays out across it. The big wall of sound production does two things that I think are really interesting here. First, it gives the whole thing a big cinematic feel. Second, there’s a fun irony having such a huge sweeping sound underpinning the pedestrian, sad sack pop tunes. It’s a good record. Entertaining. You could cherry-pick “Common People” out, that one song can live on its own, definitely defines this whole thing, brilliant stuff. The rest requires the context of the album for it to make sense.
Totally fine. I liked the hits off of it but some of the other songs were a bit weak
What the hell is common people what is this bs… The instrumental is super cool I just don’t fw the whole theme of it all Like I’ll love the music and then he’ll say smth dumb like “above the place I first touched a girl’s chest” and it ruins the vibe Fuck Disco 2000 outro is tuff Feelingcalledlove outro 😱 Fuck this might be a good album I saved: I spy, Disco 2000, feelingcalledlove But bar italia was cool too
Pulp Notable Textzeile: Why live in the world when you can live in your head? Mm, and you can go out late from Monday till Saturday turns into Sunday And now we're back here at Monday so you can do it all over again Jarvis hat von Nein heißt Nein und Stop heißt Stop vermutlich bis heute noch nichts gehört - oder will es nicht verstehen. Every other Song ist textlich absolut creepy.
A bit inconsistent at times, but there is some good stuff on here. I preferred the first half and found the second a bit tedious. This album could have been trimmed a bit. Favorite Track - Disco 2000 Least Favorite Track -F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hot take: Jarvis Cocker is a better-dressed version of Roger Waters.
I've actually already given this a go back then but to actually resurface it.. the album is very political also, it's good but I wouldn't binge it again? If i was younger, maybe around 15 again -- I would see myself bashing it into the likes of the cure
Number: 156 Date: 06/08/2026 Artist: Pulp Album: Different Class Year: 1995 Style: Britpop Familiarity: Aware (2) Rating: 3 Before: ======= Similarly to The White Stripes, who I had yesterday, I know of Pulp but am not all that familiar with their work as they never really clicked with me. However, I do know for sure that I have at least one of their songs in my favorites by years list. It's not from this album though. During: ======= 2 Mis-Shapes 2 Pencil Skirt 2 Common People 2 I Spy 3 Disco 2000 3 Live Bed Show 3 Something Changed 2 Sorted For E's & Wizz 3 F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. 2 Underwear 3 Monday Morning 4 Bar Italia ----------------------------------------------------- 2.56 WEIGHTED AVERAGE (accounts for song lengths) After : ======= Not sure why this album is on the list. I get that it is considered a "cornerstone of Britpop" but I did not care for it at all. Barely gets a 3 from me. Must be a British thing. 3 my personal rating 3 suitability for this list 4 impact ----------------------------------------------- 3 composite rating
The music is quite solid, although not revolutionary in terms of production or melodies. The lyrics though, are quite poor, and even though I don't usually listen to music it was quite prominent and detracted from the general sound of the album. Probably fits into the "cheeky British" side of British 90s rock, which I am not quite a fan of.
Listened previously. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Very Good - Mis-Shapes is a great track and Pencil Skirt is pretty good. Common People has become an anthem and although it's a bit overplayed it is a great song. I Spy is another great track and Disco 2000 another obvious hit. I like F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. a lot. It's been quite a while since I listened to this in full and I definitely enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Really good album throughout.
Actually been going through an arc for this genre this last week or so, but man for as highly touted as this album is this did not hit as I expected. Cooker sounds like David Bowie rolling off Molly at an after party here. Now throw that over some oasis type beats and we have this album. I actually get some Morrisey vibes here too. Idk I don’t have much to say about this one. Some of this Brit pop is just so so so beige there’s really no use in repeating myself with half these albums. I’m sure we’ll meet again, Pulp.
pretty good! though the album's variety isn't super good
Just fine
It’s alright. Nothing special here.
One of the better of these 90s Britpop albums
I liked it
I never really listened to Pulp because they were For Girls. I listened to Boy Music, and all the girls I knew listened to Pulp so I knew they weren't for me. This was pretty good though, enjoyed it
Better than I expected it to be
Ok, not really my cup of tea. Sort of compressed sounding or something? Squashed or muddled
Nada mal
Bowie's influence is so clear and strong on this one, which is great. This might be the most tolerable britpop offering yet, quite different from the other ones on the list. 3 stars
I can't say this did anything for me. It was just average.
Better than some other Brit-pop. Radio-friendly. A 3 for me but could be a 4 on a good day.
I think I have disco 2000 on a soundtrack somewhere and really enjoy the song. The rest of the album sounded like decent 90's alt rock
I like the song Do you remember the 1st time
Eh wierd kinda good classic rock but ofd
This was decent!
Chud behavior
For every good bit, like Common People, there's another bit where he whisper-sings in a way that is (I think) supposed to be seductive. But just comes off as an outtakes from "Business Time."
LFG i found out abt this bc i saw the jamie hewlett cartoon of common on dial up when i was a kid and was already wired to like brit pop by growing up on beatles but what can you do it's orchestrated so its impossible to feel bored. overall psychic manipulation to feel good vibes, like disneyland or cordyceps, i will always enjoy this music and cant help it. the disillusioned and creepy lyrical aspect adds to the not boring aspect. favorite track common people IG since it changed my young brain
pretty good rock album, only a few songs I would call amazing though. solid 7/10. First listen tracklist ranking: 1. Common People 2. I Spy 3. Mis-Shapes 4. F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. 5. Disco 2000 6. Underwear 7. Something Changed 8. Bar Italia 9. Live Bed Show 10. Monday Morning 11. Sorted for E’s & Wizz 12. Pencil Skirt
Couple of bangers, nice overall vibe.
Enjoyable, upbeat, seemingly personal, fun songs.
many a classic banger, a little bit too poppy for me
3.5
Sort of similar to some vibes I listen to, but no hooks for me.
I don't think I had heard of this band, but had heard "Common People" (even if I didn't know it's title). There are some interesting ideas here, and I enjoyed it overall, but nothing really stood out to make me want to come back to it.
It was good!
david bowie style, spoken parts like in audioplays or theatre
RATING: 7.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: Sorted for E's and Wizz LOWLIGHT: Live Bed Show
I enjoyed this Pulp album way more than my last one which was This is Hardcore. I can see why this album was a critical and commercial success. Overall, I had fun listening to this album and it is one that I might return to someday. It didn’t blow me away but it made me come around on Pulp a bit.
Bonne vibe
the cure?
Went in only really being familiar with Common People, and there was probably a reason for that. The rest was fine, I suppose. 2.5⭐️
I was totally in until that weird, talking, sex song.....but still liked this a lot more than Blur. 3.5 stars.
Pulp is a reasonably decent band. My first impression after one listen is a 3.
The music is decent pop, very heavily Bowie influenced sound. Has some decent pop instrumentation but the whole sex thing for 50 minutes gets a bit tedious. I am not a fan of the 90's Brit-pop, I would rather go back and play the bands from the 80's.
decent, nothing great and nothing bad about it
Has some bright spots but not really engaging
This album felt strangely familiar, even though I hadn’t really listened to most of it before. Many of the songs sounded like I had heard them somewhere, which made it easy to get into. There’s also a slight sense of David Bowie in the overall style, which added an extra layer of interest for me. Disco 2000 stood out in particular, with its energetic feel and catchy guitar-driven sound.
6/10 - some hits on this album but I think I'm just not a fan of too much britpop in one go
I was enjoying it until I wasn’t. Their style became repetitive and overdone for me about halfway through.
Sounds like music from a rebellious, misunderstood, horny teenage boy. It's not bad, really. Vocals reminded me of Bowie.
“Disco 2000” was a lot of fun!
A fine 90's Britpop album than for some will define the summer of '96 and live in memory forever. For me, happy if I never have to listen to it again.
Mr. Hands, I won't miss your class.
I can see the talent and the depth put into this. But I also feel like there's more to be desired. If his follow up album ends up being better and complete, it wouldn't surprise me. It feels like there's something bigger in store for this artist, and this is the lead up
New to me, not sure how I missed them all together. I knew the song Common People (probably from a movie?) Not ,my style, but a very solid interesting album.
Better than the other Pulp or Blur or Swede or whatever album I had a few months ago.
I did enjoy this, even though his Jarvis voice isn't all too exciting for me. The two hits were great, disco 2000 is an all time classic. But I also enjoyed a couple of the tunes on the back half of the record. Live bed show and sorted for e's and wizz were cheeky unique songs too
I think if I discovered this when I was 17 I would have really liked it, but these days it doesn't jump out at me as anything too special
i hate jarvis cocker's singing
It's alright, absolutely fine.
There's no doubt that the songs on this album are perfect indie pop, they're cleverly written and resonate with real life experiences. That's why this album will always be a classic of its time. That said, the tracks are so ubiquitous that they have now lost their impact after many years of being over-played on daytime radio. I don't need to hear this ever again, but a long as I continue to listen to the radio, I'm sure I will. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ probably Solid ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 291 Already owned : 66 Purchased : 15 To buy : 3 Nope : 207
she pulps on my fiction till i tarantino
This is a fun album with some solid tracks throughout. It doesn’t really sound like a ’90s record, if anything, it feels more like an ’80s Bowie-style album. Still, even with its charm, i doubt I'd ever revisit this.
A bunch of pop songs with a couple of well known and overplayed one's. It's OK
I enjoyed it, never heard of them before
See, there can be some good britpop turns out
Oh! So british. 2.9/5
Different Class has catchy songs, funny lyrics, and lots of personality, making it enjoyable and memorable, although some tracks sound too similar, causing the album to lose momentum before the ending arrives and leaving moments feeling less exciting afterward.
I know that some people say this is the album of the 90’s but I just don’t get it. One or two great tracks, maybe I should listen to it a bit more to get the lyrics
This was not bad very Bowie esque. I was going 2. Until the ladder half of the album started getting me into it. I’ll most likely never listen to this again but not bad
This is quite the 3 star album for me. Some decent grooves and melodies. But nothing that stirs me to feeling all that much.
This was entertaining, 3.5 :)
Liked it 1 great hit from Trainspotting “Where is my mind”
I first heard "Common People" in the Shatner version, and it rivals the original; they are both great in their own way. I like the album, but it doesn't seem like something I'm going to keep coming back to.
Definitely better than This Is Hardcore, a high 3. Although, I found a few songs more annoying, and overall the albums a bit samey
Enjoyed this.
I can never bring myself to hate britpop The variety in this one was pretty excellent, for a genre that’s stereotyped for having so much samey music every song sounded pretty unique. Vocals are pretty solid. Disco 2000 and Common People are a little on the brainless side but very fun tracks nonetheless They ain’t beating the generic allegations; some songs content wise feel like every other pop radio single. Even though I enjoyed most of the album it didn’t leave a huge impact on me. I don’t think the instrumentation is particularly special either Not gonna pretend like this is high art but it’s catchy music and I will happily take that over some of our recent albums
Kann man anhören, ist aber nichts besonderes.
It was good... For britpop
its okay
I liked this album and some of the songs more than others. Some of the parts were a bit weird to listen to through AirPods.

This one really grew on me a lot as I listened. Fun, punky, sounds like it's of a totally different era than when it was released. I don't think I'll seek it out again on my own but I really enjoyed listening through it.
Some good songs, some bad songs.
It's fine. This kind of falls in the same boat as all other Britpop albums to me. One enjoyable hit, the main hit, some other fun songs and a bunch of alright but not all too memorable tracks. Is anything bad to me? Not really. Will I come back to it? Probably not. It scratches an itch I don't really have.
Feels the same every song
I really liked the rhythm. I also liked how they criticize society in certain songs.
- Never heard of this band before; finally a blank slate! They got my attention from the first note with synths and fuzz that tickle my ear drums. Full of poppy energy and weird sexual tension. This list is showing me that I don’t really know shit about British Music outside of Punk and New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
90s British alt rock, mellow and enjoyable - nothing stood out. Sound is like a mellower version of "Come on Eileen".
Pulp is one of those bands that I had heard of but never really listened to until I was recommended this album. I had no idea that they had been around since the 70's. This album was good it tit not turn me into a Pulp fan but I look forward to the other album on here.
A lot of the songs had a pretty good sound. I will NOT be defending any of the lyrics tho. I love a little freakiness in my music, but it gets to a point
This is a pretty great album, with cheeky lines, constantly sky-high energy, and clever social commentary. There’s a slight tinge of the Fountains of Wayne, but British. Common People is not only a pop anthem but also an insightful take on class and privilege. Thumbs from me.
If you don't like Blur, or Oasis, then maybe this is the Brit Pop for you?
A bit boring, but enjoyable
I expected this to be a 5 but I didn’t get into it. Disco 2000 really lifts this album up
Never really listened to Pulp before. A few songs I don't like, a few are really great.
This album kinda felt horny in a bad way
A couple of good songs but pretty average overall. 3 stars or C.
Definite post-punk and synth influence on this that I like a lot. I also appreciate the clever storytelling and sex as a subject matter - the fixation is titillating. I had I guess unfairly lumped Pulp in with the Britpop bands but this sound is different and I like them a lot more than Oasis and Blur. Reading their history of starting in 1978, that makes a lot of sense. I don’t really want to hear it in rotation but I do appreciate it. High three
It's sensual and dramatic, it's fun and catchy.
What starts as a triumphant working-class anthem quickly devolves into more generic (and sex obsessed) brit pop.
Starts out as a solid brit-pop album, with some hits and then it gets weird and a bit creepy.
"I've been sleeping with your wife for 16 weeks, smoking all your cigarettes, drinking all your brandy" Have to give it a better mark just for this banger of a line. Not really listened to Pulp much but this album surpriaes me, there's some really good songwriting in there, and even if the lyrics are super sexually charged or cheesy at times they do tell a story. Also always avoided common people because of how popular it was, it put me off a little bit but its actually a great tune
More fun version of 90s British rock than I expected. Yay!
My collection of "just fine" British albums grows!
Great discovery! Great late 90s vibe. Not sure if I will listen to it again though.
unexpleftedly iliked a few of them.
Liked this a lot more than I expected to. Got better as it went along. 3.4
I'm not a fan of Britpop. I can appreciate that fans relate to the album's critique of the British social class system. Some of the music was interesting, but didn't hold my attention for about half the album. Liked it more by the time I'd listened to the entire album.
Funnily enough, I only knew Common People from the William Shatner version. Otherwise had never heard of Pulp, but then again, I'm not from the UK and it appears this album didn't sell an insane amount of units in the US. That being said, great album! I do think some of the songs are creepy and it did take me two listens to enjoy the speak/whisper singing. But it's a tight record and I gotta say I get the appeal - but I don't think it resonates with me like so many others. 3/5. Playlist Pick - Common People. Man I love this song so much!
Clásica common people, el resto acompaña bien
Same old same old. This list lacks diversity bruh
A couple of songs I didn't mind, but won't be adding it to my playlist.
*1995. British rock. *I get excited whenever there's anything from the 90s because I like most of it. This was just okay though, and sounds very 80s to me. *This sounds like a wannabe David Bowie, with lyrics like Joe Jackson's Is She Really Going Out With Him. *I feel like I recognize Common People. *Tried giving it another listen and liked it a little bit better. RATING - 6/10
Right off the bat, I felt like the songs had a dated sound (like a bit of an 80s sound despite it being a 90s album). I also sensed a strain of desperation running through the songs, which intrigued me, as did the combination of singing and spoken lyric delivery. I thought "Common People" was quite a meaningful song, especially in these times. Some of the lyrics were kind of creepy and obsessive, like the ones in "Pencil Skirt" and "Underwear". I didn't mind the music (a britpop/rock style), but I wasn't in love with it either. Perhaps it's an acquired taste.
a bit bri-ish innit; couple standout tracks here but HIS 'N HERS clears pretty comfortably 3.5/5
didnt really catch my attention
A perfectly fine indie-rock album.
Þvílík nostalgía yfir common people! 3,5
Tvö sterk lög sem voru næstum búin að ýta þessari upp í fjórar en restin er svolítið bragðlaus.
Like if The Cure took antidepressants
It’s uneven, but still enough I liked to warrant three stars
It’s ok. Common people was not terrible
Ya lo escuché
It was fine
Average good. Nothing overly special. But not bad either.
It was fine
Not listen to that album before. I knew few songs but I think I did like like that album
Feeling a little average on this one. I feel like there's Bowie influence, and a general Brit-Pop vibe which kind of feels like Ziggy Stardust meets Supergrass. I can admit it comes from a place of talent, type of album that doesn't get boring. It also doesn't invite me to another listen, the singles didn't feel obvious the first time around. I wouldn't mind giving it another listen, but I won't be searching for it. 3/5
Lyrics are fun, cheeky, and very sexual. Makes the listener feel like they're "fucking someone else's wife" (thematic vibes). Surprised, expected just another Britpop album but really enjoyed it. Easy listens throughout, even the unfamiliar tracks. (3.5/5)
Different Class is such a strange album because it feels bound by no genres or styles and yet everything somehow meshes together beautifully like some dysfunctional family outing. This project jumps between traditional Brit Pop to borderline Shoegaze and even Alternative Dance all throughout its' varied 52 minutes. No two songs feel super alike and this album truly feels like a showcase of every influence and adventure the band had been wanting to try since their debut all together at once. Out of all the songs here I have to say Pencil Skirt is by far the weakest and I think without a doubt that is because of the very dicey lyrics of "I love it when you tell me to stop." I really respect the band throwing everything at the wall here but it does make this album feel like an absolute mess at the same time. Pulp is turning out to be a lot weirder and more unconventional than I had originally though, but that may also be due to my inexperience with Brit Pop as a whole as I am an American music enjoyer. All in all this project constantly had me hooked and trying to guess where it was going to next, but now that the surprise factor is gone I don't think this will hit as hard on relisten for me. Different Class is a different breed meant for different kinds of music enjoyers.
Common People, Disco 2000, and I Spy are the strongest efforts. However, I didn't really enjoy this album. Jarvis Cocker is a bit of a legend, and I thoroughly enjoyed This Is Hardcore. This is bland.
Midt på treet
I actually liked this one! The other one I had to listen to was not as enjoyable.
Bitta fun 2 great singles Some great violin work Good

I love Pulp, but the album doesn't hold up as a whole. Fun, yes. Great, not really.
Disco 2000 is a fantastic song. Common people is a bloody awesome song as well. I have high hopes for this album. Mis-Shapes: 6.5/10 Gets off to a slow start but is a good rocking tune when it gets going. Pencil Skirt: 6/10 “But I’ve kissed your mother twice, and now I’m working on your dad.” What a line. Common People: 7/10 Good song. Good words and a solid rocker. I spy: 5.5/10 Could be a song in a movie. Disco 2000: 9/10 Belter of a tune. Live Bed Show: 6/10 Something Changed: 6/10 Sorted for E’s and Wizz: 5.5/10 F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E 5/10 Underwear: 6/10 Monday Morning: 5.5/10 Bar Italia: 5.5/10
Fine
Some nice songs, others are more forgettable. The sound reminded a bit of The Cure, but the melodies were not as creative or fresh.
Not bad at all. Probably the best Britpop album I’ve heard yet. Though the vocals are insufferable (like a Bowie wannabe), they’ve started to grow on me, and the songs are masterfully crafted. The first half of the album is definitely the stronger half
